he roots of our own fair isle are always going to hold a special place in our hearts, so this issue we’ve decided to concentrate our eyes on the UK – that is, Pagan UK! Long before the introduction of Christianity, many inhabitants of this tiny island used to practice their own worship – in conjunction with the land itself. Walk the pagan path with us as we introduce you to a worship of old. Georgia Mead guides us on our way with her roots of paganism (p18), familiars (p34), her guide to natural magic (p47) and of course, her monthly Coven Corner (p58). Wendy Truran introduces us to the earth’s elementals (p6) and also guides us through the

Star Letter Captivating China

Thank you Vision for concentrating your last issue on Chinese culture – what a fascinating country! I found The Chinese Way of Death the most interesting article. It is so amazing that they treat their deceased relatives with the same respect they had in life by still involving them in the family traditions. I had great fun working out my Chinese horoscope and I’ve been busily trying to incorporate some Feng Shui into my home and office. The Isatreya psychic development course is a revelation – who would have thought that everyone has the ability to be psychic?! I look forward to reading the rest of the course in future issues. Don’t miss our low-down on the event (p14), plus a special Visionaries report from the most haunted pub in the city (p11). Don’t miss our interview with Gordon Smith (p44), the second part of our Isatreya psychic development course (p30) and the final part of our crystal first aid kit (p50). Discover your Lifepath number with our numerology feature (p36), and delve into Out-of-Body Experiences (p40), and Colour Light Therapy (p54). So there’s no excuse not to bask in the glory of the Goddess this month! Enjoy…

Amazing auras

Thank you Vision magazine for introducing me to the wonderful world of auras in your True Colours article. My five-year-old daughter has often said that she can see people ‘glow’ different colours. I just put it down to childhood fantasy but now I know she is not kidding and can put a name to the phenomena! Sally Rigby, Oldham.

Animal farm

I didn’t realize the true extent of astrology and all the different methods which various cultures believe. I find it fascinating that I can be a tiger in Chinese astrology and yet a Virgo in ‘Western’ formats. And the description of my animal was so like me it was uncanny! I now know who my perfect match is – it’s just a case of finding them!! Thank you Vision for broadening my horizons! Catherine Bourne, Winchester.

Chinese Herbs: In last month’s issue we stated in the Chinese Herbal Medicine article (p24) that Xin yi hua was the ‘fried’ flower of the Magnolia tree - it should have been ‘dried’ flower. There were also a couple of typographical errors. We apologise for any confusion.

White witch Georgia Mead introduces us to the earth’s mystical creatures.

E

lementals are mystical creatures that live in the realms of the elements; they control the air, water, earth and fire. Well-known for being mischievous, it is wise to be very specific when calling upon them for help. Each elemental embodies its own individual energy.

Earth elemental - the Gnome:

The word Gnome comes from the Greek gnoma, which means ‘knowledge’. They are known to live in the earth under tree roots and beneath stones. Helping only those who live at one with the earth, they very rarely help humans but have been known to show themselves to those who have proven to be true and worthy. The ruler of the earth elementals is called Ghom. Other earth elementals include: dwarves; goblins; brownies; and pygmies. When calling upon them for magical purposes they can guide you in fertility, herbal lore, prosperity, or removing negativity from a specific space.

Water elemental - the Undine:

This word comes from the Latin unda which means ‘wave’. They live in the oceans, seas, rivers, lakes, waterfalls and ponds. They’re in every form of water and are seen riding the waves as they crash onto the shore. They not only protect all sea plants, but also the plants above sea level too. They’re quite happy to help humans with issues that relate to emotions. The ruler of the water elementals is called Niksa. Other water elementals include: mermaids; oceanids; sea maids; and naiads. When calling upon them for magical purposes they can guide you in emotional issues, scrying, healing and cleansing.

Air elemental - the Sylph:

The word Sylph comes from the Greek silphe which means ‘butterfly’. As the elementals of air, they’re mostly seen in the form of fairies. They can live to be thousands of years old and can take on human form - but only for very short periods of time. They’re known to live on mountain tops. They will help humans with works of the mind by giving inspiration, new ideas, and they love to help with new inventions. The ruler of the air elementals is called Paralda. Other air elementals include: zephyrs and fairies. When calling upon them for magical purposes they can guide you in issues of prediction, ideas, and bringing thoughts to reality.

Fire elemental - the Salamander:

The word comes from the Greek word salambe meaning ‘fireplace’. These spirits control all manners of fire and combustibles without them fire cannot exist. They are known as the strongest of the elementals. Salamanders can stretch their size from the smallest spark to a raging fire. We can sometimes get a glimpse of them as we light a match, or as the flame of a candle flickers and jumps. They can be very mischievous and are very often childlike in their appearance. The ruler of the fire elementals is called Djin. Other fire elementals include: fire drakes; fire dragons; and sunbeams. When calling upon them for magical purposes they can guide you in healing, candle magic, and courage. Be warned - when thinking of asking for the assistance of the elementals: a fire can warm us - but it can also burn down a forest. Water can quench our thirst but a flood can destroy a town. The earth can give life to a plant - but an earthquake can move islands, and a soft breeze on a hot day can be refreshing but a tornado can wipe out whole cities. Ask only when in need and be very specific in your request. If you’re truthful, honest and pure of heart, they will guide and protect you. Treat them with respect and you’ll have friends for life.

The

reluctant

Richard Felix, paranormal historian, ghost detective and one of the stars of Living TV’s hit show Most Haunted talks to Jacky Newcomb.

I

t’s rare for a skeleton to come out of a paranormal investigator’s closet, but if one popped out of Richard Felix’s, he’d probably run a mile – he’s scared of ghosts!! “When I was four I used to rush into bed and pull the covers over my head and pretend that I was asleep so that the ghosts wouldn’t bother me. I slept with the light on until I was nearly 14!” he confesses. He puts his fear down to the antics of childhood friends. “I used to play with a lot of older kids and we would lock ourselves into a large old rabbit cage. We amused ourselves by telling ghost stories.” Despite his childhood tales and fears, it’s hard not to love this charismatic man. We know Richard Felix more as a historian but his knowledge of ghosts – despite his fear - is beyond belief and his enthusiasm is infectious. “Did you know that there are more green ghosts in Scotland than anywhere else?” he offers! Richard is a reluctant celebrity and amazed by his own popularity with viewers. I recently met up with him at an event at Tutbury Castle (the scene of a recent Most Haunted investigation). Richard was surrounded by fans all day. His down-to-earth style is endearing. He keeps the crowd mesmerised with stories of the latest programmes he’s filmed, and shares scary tales with the audience who hang on his every word! “I’m just an ordinary bloke,” he says to me bewildered by his fame. But his face is now extremely well-known and we laugh when the interview is briefly interrupted by a phone call from his son. “Dad, I’ve just seen your face on

the side of a bus in Leeds!” he says. We all roar with laughter and talk about a possible trip to stand beside the bus for a photo shoot! “I didn’t plan that phone call!” he laughs. Richard’s home is a medieval moated farmhouse, but he assures me that there are no ghosts there! But he has actually seen two ghosts and heard another whilst on location with Most Haunted. He has filmed many videos about haunted locations around the country and is owner of the haunted, working museum, Derby Gaol. The gaol is a favourite spot for ghost hunters who want to experience one of the spooky ‘gaol sleepovers’ at weekends. They are, in fact, so popular that there is a 6-month waiting list! Richard was approached to appear on Most Haunted after the crew filmed at Derby Gaol - he is now a regular member of the team. Yet a television career was not where Richard

originally saw his future. His real passion was for military history, particularly the Charge of the Light Brigade. Sadly Richard was dangerously ill for much of his childhood with Hodgekins disease (which was a killer 37 years ago). A friend arranged for him to be seen by a doctor in London who recommended 5 weeks of radiotherapy. He travelled to London by train every day for 5 weeks before returning to Derby to join his father on the family market stall. He recalls hearing the good news that he was given the all clear on his 19th birthday. He met his wife Julia, who was a nurse at the time, at the age of 19. Julia encouraged him to do more with his life. “I went to tech as a mature student. I wanted to join the 17th Lancers. I managed to get through all the stages until I went for the medical and then I got chucked out for being ‘unfit.” He says sadly. Instead, he went on to form a

star re-enactment group. “I took part in a battle the day before my wedding and got hit in the mouth. You can imagine how that didn’t go down to well!” he laughs. He eventually joined the Territorial Army. “I didn’t tell them I had been ill and managed to join the Yeoman’s and became a Captain!” Richard ran a market stall in Derby for 28 years, 6 days a week, selling records before he became a ghost detective. He now spends much of his time talking to people about ghosts and he’s in great demand for the regular ghost walks he runs around Derby. Richard can also be found on the after dinner speaker circuit. elcome once again to a special vigil by us, The Visionaries. All apart from the lovely Georgia, are here, so we asked a guest investigator to join us this month. You may remember in the first magazine (way back in the dark days of December) we ran an article on Michael Reed who just happened to be around good ole York, so he kindly lent himself to us for the evening. The Golden Fleece is reputedly the most haunted public house in York. So never one to pass up a challenge, we and several brave members of the public set about unravelling the mystery of the Golden Fleece.

the impression that he was from the early 20th century, 1913-1914. He had something wrong with his chest as I couldn’t breathe properly. I got the feeling he was not a nice man and caused a lot of pain to others when he was on the earthly plane.

Function room

Entrance

As Diana and Rachel took on the task of settling in the members of the public, I took it upon myself to nosy around. The first thing I picked up on when entering the pub, well before I even set foot in the place, was a young girl outside. She stood beckoning me to come inside! She gave me the name of Jane, and I could feel this severe pain in my neck and shoulders and also the feeling that she was scared of something or someone, a man maybe, someone who had made this poor girl’s life a misery. Sometimes Spirit know that we are coming so can come to us in a form of visitation. Some never leave because they do not know that they have died - their passing may have been too traumatic for them, or sometimes they just don’t want to leave. In most cases the spirit/ghost can still be afraid of the people they were afraid of in their last life. On entering the pub I was drawn to the stairs near the toilets, and saw a girl stood on the steps at the top, she wanted me to follow, but that area was restricted. I felt that she had died quite possibly on the stairs or near to them. The pub has a mass of energy - at this point I thought the venue lived up to its reputation!

Rear bar/restaurant

The back room contained such a lot of energy, it was like being in a rush hour at an airport! Michael and I both picked up on a connection to King Charles I. Michael said that he was sure the former monarch actually stayed in the building or near to it.

12 Vision 2

The room had quite a relaxed and jovial atmosphere, but I did pick up on the fact that Spirit, bless them, were fine about us being there. Michael also picked up on a girl called Annie or Anne, quite thin and pale, who just happened to walk through the bar area and scare the poor barmaid, who was nervous enough already! I picked up on a lady called Catherine who was telling me that she was involved in some sort of tragedy. I could smell burning and could see that there used to be a fireplace next to the bar, a big open range. The energy at this point was quite negative. I was also shown nuns and monks!? I was then given the dates 1400-1420, and the name of Thomas Carter. Again Michael and myself picked up on the same thing - a scrawny dog, quite mad and scatty, which kept running up and down the pub corridors with two Spirit children playmates in tow. Later on that evening, I was stood at the back door checking out the back yard area with one of the members of the public, when the inside door opened of its own accord! At first we thought it was a draught – but all the other doors were shut, and it was not windy. As we walked back into the pub I saw a man stood at the bar, he was small and stocky, his sleeves were rolled up and he looked like he was smoking a pipe. I got

The evening seemed to pass very quickly as people settled down into their roles as paranormal investigators. Every room was used for different experiments. In the upstairs function room we tried EVP (Electronic Voice Phenomena). Diana held the EVP meeting with the public. Each person took it in turn to ask questions into the dictaphone - sadly when they replayed the tape there was nothing. It wasn’t until it was suggested that the jovial sceptic of the group should have a go that we made progress. The gentleman hesitantly began to ask questions to the tape, but as he did this, the battery-powered lantern light we had on the table began to dim and brighten

each time he asked a question! Diana worked out that it was dim for no and bright for yes. We were all very pleased with Spirit’s initiative! We also held a séance in the function room. A small boy was picked up by one of the guests. He was around 6 to 8-years-old and very mischievous. We also picked up a Victorian lady, and while her presence was felt, some people around the table complained of restrictions around their throats – a few felt that they were being choked. Rachel picked up agonizing stomach pains that could have come from some kind of accident, beating or even a miscarriage. The lady said that she was mistreated by her husband. We later found out that many previous landlords had felt restrictions around their throats when in the function room. We did pick up a completely anomalous Gauss Meter reading on the stairs going up to the function room. There was no logical explanation for it, although Rachel thought that there was someone there when there wasn’t - but Rachel did not know about the Gauss Meter reading until later! Below: an anomalie captured on the stairs leading to the first floor function room; Right: Rachel videos a ouija board session in the front bar.

Cellar

Rachel was in charge of the night vision camera all evening and caught 2 moving orbs! Michael was the only medium that dared venture into the cellar - he picked up on the old delivery point (without knowledge) and sensed a drayman who had fallen through and died (the orb appeared when he was talking about the drayman). There was certainly plenty of activity in the Golden Fleece and it more than lived up to its reputation as the ‘most haunted pub in York’ with a plethora of spooky Spirit. None of us will ever look at a night out at the pub in the same way again! Thank you to landlord Kevin Pollitt and all the staff at the Golden Fleece for making us feel so welcome.

NEXT MONTH: The Visionaries venture out to Dalton Grange, Huddersfield.

History of the Golden Fleece

PSI investigator Rachel Lacy discovers the fact behind the fear of York’s ‘most haunted pub’. = The Golden Fleece was first mentioned in the city archives in 1503 as The Fleece, but is almost undoubtedly older. = The pub has a number of reported hauntings, including: a Canadian airman who committed suicide there in 1945; a disembodied head; a man who walks through walls; bedsheets and clothes being thrown around upstairs; and a regal presence that is allegedly Lady Alice Peckett’s ghost. She lived in Herbert’s House next door, which has been shown to encompass what is now the pub in a sketch from the 1800s, which would mean it was a private house at that time. Lady Alice was the wife of a former Lord Mayor of York in the early 1700s. In York, the Lord Mayor’s wife retained the title of Lady for the rest of her life, regardless of her station. = Herbert’s House was named after former owner Sir Thomas Herbert, who stayed with King Charles I the night before his execution, accompanying the doomed monarch onto the scaffold. Charles himself may well have connections with the pub, as he dined with William Allenson in 1633, at Allenson’s house in Pavement, which could well be the building later bought by Sir Thomas. = In Victorian times there was a reduction in the number of licensed premises in York, resulting in The Fleece and the Queen’s Head Hotel, Fossgate (now demolished) sharing a licence. They almost joined at the back, at right angles to each other, and the Queen’s Head had a livery stable, and even its own Four-in-Hand Club. The Fleece has been called a coaching inn, however it was not used by stagecoaches, as Pavement was virtually a cul-de-sac until 1884. St Crux’s Church used to extend across what is now the street, the one that now bears the same name was built where the nave once stood, and was constructed of stone from the original church.

ork – an ancient city indeed, not surprisingly it is claimed to be the ‘Most Haunted City in the World’. Boasting over 500 alleged hauntings (a number which is constantly growing), it comes as no surprise that it was host to what was the first annual Ghost Festival. Organised by York-based Psychic and Spectral Investigations (PSI), the three-day event was given a spine-tingling start by the city’s very own Ghost Finder General, Rev Rachel Lacy, with her Necropolis: City of the Dead Ghost Walk. This spook spectacular began in King’s Square where she told the grisly tale of the headless ghost of the Earl of Northumberland who supposedly frequents Holy Trinity Church – at least the remains of the one in King’s Square, NOT the intact one in Goodramgate. That was the beauty of Rev Lacy’s tour – equipped with the sub-heading historical not hysterical, she debunked some of the most popular stories with entertaining historical fact triumphing over urban legend and myth. She was ably assisted along the way by fellow PSI colleague, Vision’s Diana Jarvis. The tour was thankfully devoid of staged shocks, which meant it was suitable for all ages, and a little bit of laser magic helped set the mood down Stonegate – the city’s most haunted street - with the tragic tale of a girl who fell to her death down a staircase in one of the houses.

Terrifying

The terrifying tale of the children of Bedern and their shocking demise at the hands of a greedy workhouse owner was played down as probable circumspection by Rachel – although she relished in the tale of the two sisters who saw the apparition of their naval officer brother in York Minster. The tour finished with a guided tour of the Eboracum Legion Bathhouse in St Sampson’s Square – as well as a preview of the When Harry Met….Is It Real Or Is It Fake? a photographic

Take a walk on the spooky side with our guide to the York Ghost Festival. by Clare Sheridan exhibition of supposed ghostly apparitions captured on camera. The Harry of the title was Harry Martindale – a local man who witnessed one of the most famous hauntings in the city’s history. In 1953 – at the tender age of 19 - Harry was working in the cellar of The Treasurer’s House, assisting with central heating maintenance, when he witnessed the infamous Roman Legion IX march through the cellar! He gave a fascinating account of what he saw at an atmospheric talk at the Holy Trinity Church in Goodramgate. Then it was on to the Golden Fleece pub on Pavement – reputedly the most haunted pub in York – for the all night ghost hunting vigil (see The Visionaries’ report on pages 11-13). But the fun did not end there for those that could handle a lack of sleep – the Golden Fleece was still the venue, but this time hypnotherapist Carole Chui hosted a talk on past lives followed by a group regression. And after a buffet lunch Carole continued with an aura workshop followed by individual sessions on her snazzy Aura Video Station machine. A colourful finale to a very colourful few days! Diana Jarvis explains your weird experiences. Freaky footsteps

I quite frequently experience strange things in my house – usually when nobody else is around. Several people, including myself, have heard someone walk up the stairs and close doors. On one occasion a guest thought it was me. They heard the door close and footsteps. It really freaked them out - they thought it was me but I was sat on the sofa. Sue, Leeds. Diana says: What you have described is quite common. I have had a similar experience, in my case it was a friendly spirit who used to watch over me. She was a previous owner of the house I lived in and was seen by believers and complete sceptics alike. You probably have a guardian spirit in your house, making sure that it is secure and that you are too. The other possibility is that it is a previous owner, following through their old routine, unaware that they have left the Earth Plane. I would not worry about it, it can be disconcerting, but is more than likely to be protective and beneficial. Talk to the spirit, acknowledge their presence and you may find that you will get to know who they are and why they are there.

Absence makes the spirit fonder?

I moved back to live with my parents late last year after an absence of six years. Strange things started happening after my return. On the evening of Halloween a single flower in a bunch of flowers started dancing on its own on the mantlepiece in the lounge, the paper shredder has started on its own for no reason (there was no paper in it at the time) and over the festive period, water in a glass which had been left on a sideboard mysteriously vanished without a trace. What could this mean? CJ, East Yorkshire. Diana says: First of all, eliminate the obvious and ensure that the flower was not blown by a draught, that the shredder did not have some kind of electrical fault and that someone didn’t take the glass away and forget about it. If you are sure that there is no way these things could have happened by rational means, then it is possible that a spirit is trying to attract your attention. I would assume it is trying to talk to YOU as you suggest by your letter that these things only started happening once you returned home. It sounds to me as if you were missed and that a family member is pleased to see you again. Alternatively, as spirits can become attached to buildings as well as people, the spirit may be another ‘resident’ of the house that is welcoming you back.

Creepy crewman

I thought this image may be of interest. It was captured by Bassetlaw Ghost Research Group at the Newark Air Museum, Nottinghamshire, which is the former RAF Winthorpe. The former base was initially used as an active station for Polish Forces during the war, then in 1942 it was used as a training base for bomber crews. Many crewmen and pilots lost their lives whilst training there. The photograph was taken at approx 2.30am with a digital camera flash was used. The weather was cold and damp, but very clear. It is thought that a small hut was situated in that area where crewmen would wait for the phone to ring to spring them into action. A spokesperson for the museum stated that the picture does indeed show a crewman garbed in typical flight attire of that period. Visit www.ghost-research.org for more details about the group. Image © David Wharmby. David Wharmby, Nottingham. Diana says: What a fascinating photo. It is very hard indeed to be sure of the origin of what appears to be a ‘paranormal’ image on a photograph, especially with digital manipulation and morphing but I’m sure you wouldn’t send in a picture that had been treated. From what I can see in your photo, the image does appear to be very solid. Solid manifestations are the rarest to be caught on camera, but they are possible. It is also a very clear photo, which is even rarer. I think you have quite a special photo here and with the additional information you have given and assuming your integrity, I would say you have captured a crew member from the past. Congratulations!

he ancient Egyptians were pagan, as were the Romans, along with many cultures from the Stone Age that possessed strong pagan elements. Today when we imagine pagans in Britain, we usually think of men with long beards and women in flowing dresses dancing around Stonehenge. While this can be true at certain times of the year, there is a different type of pagan out there too. Today when we look for pagans we don’t have to travel much further than our local shops, offices, police stations, schools, and, well - just about anywhere. Paganism in its many forms is the fastest growing religion in Britain. Many people wonder what pagans do, what makes up the pagan path that so many people seem to want to follow? The most important thing to pagans is the fact that they acknowledge the gift that the earth gives us every day. They have a sense of place that makes them understand the earth and worship nature, trying to balance it out in their own lives and the way in which they treat the earth on a day to day basis. They celebrate the earth’s cycles and they are at one with animals, plants and all forms of life. Pagans acknowledge that we came from the earth, we’re made from the earth and that one day we will return to the earth - so surely it deserves our love and respect while we are here? Pagans worship the Mother Earth and the Father Sun/Sky - but they don’t see them as being above them or out of reach. Pagans see them all around, in every action we take, say, see, feel, and within the hearts of all of us. They sense their Goddess/God in the air, earth, water and fire and acknowledge their true oneness with the divine. Many pagans worship a female Goddess in her triple aspect as maiden,

18 Vision 2

Wiccan Georgia Mead explores the fastest growing religion in Britain. mother and crone (these phases change as do the seasons), and her consort the Horned God. Don’t be misled by the idea of a god with horns, he is not the Devil. Pagans believe that the Devil is a fictitious invention and will make a point of informing those who don’t understand. The Horned God is the King of the Hunt: he is the animals in the forest and he cares for them all from the small rabbit to the bear and the stag. Pagans also make room for many other deities. They believe that even though they worship one main Mother/Father, they can still work directly with the Goddess/God that can help them with specific issues. Some pagans will worship a goddess/god which has both the essence of male and female embodied in one form. Others will worship a female goddess to symbolise the fertility of the earth and a horned male god to symbolise the hunting and gathering side of nature, though there is always balance between the two. The point is that we see ourselves as equals - with male and female in every form of life, sometimes separate, sometimes united, but always working in the same direction. Some pagans use statues, some have altars in dedication, while others simply visualise their chosen deity/deities. However, the most important form that they take is that of nature itself. Pagans believe that the God and Goddess are everywhere; in everything from the smallest stone to the highest mountain, in each blade of grass to each grain of sand in the Sahara desert. She represents the Moon and he the Sun, he the day and she the night, but not as opposites, always in harmony working together to make all things possible.

Origins

Pagans used Greek, Egyptian, Celtic and Roman myths to find goddesses and gods. For example: Aradia is very important to the Wiccan religion as she represents the full moon and brings wisdom to all who wish to follow. Pan, the Horned God, came from Greece, Isis the goddess of magic and healing from Egypt, Mercury the messenger from the Romans and Cerridwen the Welsh goddess of rebirth are but a few. Very close to the pagans’ heart is the Green Man (pictured below left). This image of a man’s face made solely from oak leaves can be found on many churches - perhaps they were placed there by the pagans who were made to build on their own worshiping grounds? But he truly represents the leaves of a tree that grows to remind us that we can do anything and be anything, as from small acorns do mighty oaks grow. Imagine a large oak tree and at the end of every branch you have a belief system that works as one with all the other branches. Not the same, but not fighting with its brother or sister branches, feeding from the same roots and living in perfect harmony. These branches encompass Witchcraft and Wicca, Druidism, Shamanism, Neo Pagans, Wizardry, and many more. They all have a similar way of working by worshipping the earth and her seasons, but the most important thing to all is two words: ‘Harm None’. They will strive in their day to day lives to work side by side with everyone for the better of all and to make our existence just a little more pleasant.

Walk the paths of

Wicca

and Witchcraft

Wiccans and witches alike live at one with nature; they worship a Goddess and her partner the Horned God. They celebrate the wheel of the year containing eight Sabbats: four Major and four Minor. They also celebrate Esbats which are the 13 full moons of the calendar year. To honour the changing seasons helps them to make changes in their lives - they move with the earth not against it. They work with birth, growth, death and rebirth. Witches are concerned with looking after the environment so that it can continue to sustain us, and in educating each new generation about the importance of this. Many witches work in the healing profession as nurses, midwives, crystal healers, psychics and councilors - so they are still doing what their ancestors did hundreds of years ago! There are thousands of witches and Wiccans throughout Britain and in certain parts, they can now openly express their beliefs. They meet and greet each other through covens, which are groups of witches that work together as a family, meeting at important times of the year - or they can work as solitary witches whereby they work alone from their own homes.

Druids

The word druid is derived from the word ‘Oak’, the most celebrated tree. They are associated with and hold nothing more sacred than the mistletoe and the oak tree on which it grows. Druids are believed to have emerged from Celtic tribes at a time when working at one with nature was essential to the survival of the people. They were respected as medicine men, teachers and makers of magic. The Romans have written the most about the druids and they told of how these men had great mathematical and astrological skills. They possessed great knowledge and prophetic powers, they were even thought to be able to influence the weather. Like witches, the druids were persecuted for many years by the Romans, Saxons and Christians, so their wisdom was often passed from one member to the other by word of mouth for fear of discovery. As time passed many things were lost. Modern druids must learn from what is left, but the beauty of life’s changing situations means that modern druids are still wise, magical and work with the earth as one, bringing the needs of today into the religion of yesterday - so they know deep down that their beliefs will never die out.

paganism with us...

Shamanism

Throughout history, shamans have been healers, leaders and spiritual consultants and today you will still find them (as you will all pagans), working in the community for the community. The abilities that shamans are best known for are that of the Out-of-Body Experience and connecting with the spirit realm. The shaman of the village would be expected to connect with the ancestors at times of crisis to find an answer to their problems. They also use tree and herb lore to aid them in healing and totem animals to connect with nature. Thanks to the internet, pagans of all forms have a way of connecting across land and sea, there are now no boundaries and TV programs such as Charmed, Sabrina the Teenage Witch, and books such as the Harry Potter series have introduced a whole new generation to the pagan path.

Wiccan Wendy Truran explains the role of the Pagan Goddess.

L

ike many people both male and female, I’ve lacked a personal relationship with The Great Goddess. When I started to learn about her I was a bit suspicious, she seemed just too good to be true – the perfect mother; the independent and spirited Maiden; or the wise Crone? My relationships with the women in my life, mothers especially, didn’t seem to mirror this, they were far from perfect and I wasn’t so wise and loving. I decided I would like them to

Maiden/Virgin

The Maiden Goddess and her ancient priestess were often referred to as virgins; rather than celibate it meant they were unmarried and did not belong to any man. They might take lovers or even have a child, but unlike the Mother Goddess they did not give themselves completely nor exclusively. Author Cassandra Eason states in The Complete Book of Women’s Wisdom (Piatkus 1999) that the virgin state thus represents ‘a reservoir of undiluted power, an identity not eroded by emotional ties and attachments’. Often exclusively a woman’s goddess, the Maiden oversees female nature from menstruation through to birth and then menopause. Aphrodite, Goddess of Love or her Roman counterpart Venus, were Virgin Goddesses born whole and complete from the foam of the sea. Aphrodite as Goddess of Love and sexual bliss represented the sacred marriage between the earth and sky. The physical joining of her priestesses to the King signified the blessing of the Goddess on the land and the King’s commitment to the protection of it. Aphrodite teaches us that love can be both spiritual and sexual, so our unions and connections can become sacred. Alternative Maiden Goddesses include: Athena/Minerva, Artemis/Diana, Herodias/Arcadia, Hestia, Ianna/Ishtar, the Virgin Mary.

be, I wanted to know and connect with the feminine in myself, my loved ones and on a larger scale with nature. My first connection with the Great Goddess, the one goddess behind the ‘faces’ of the other goddesses, was through the Triple Goddess, and her facets of Maiden, Mother and Crone. Taken together the Triple Goddess encompasses all aspects of life and death, birth to rebirth, she speaks to all women at all stages of her life. In a world so out of balance with nature we need to connect to Gaia,

Mother Earth, for our own physical survival as well as our spiritual enrichment. As women who desire freedom, autonomy and independence we can connect with the Maiden Goddess energy to keep us strong and creative and finally when our paths darken and our internal emotional lives become clouded we need the wisdom, guidance and experience of the Crone. Whatever our current thoughts about our own feminine sides, now is the time to stop being suspicious and bravely embrace the Goddess.

The three faces...

Great Mother

This is the goddess perhaps in her most well-known aspect, that of a fertile, nurturing mother. Not everyone will literally experience the role of mother but we all nurture and create something, be it a painting, a plant, our career or our spiritual lives - we are all daughters and sons of mothers. Isis, is one of the longest worshipped goddesses. Pictured holding her son, Horus, she is a powerful fertility icon. She is also the mistress of enchantment and magic and has over 10,000 names. She was considered an approachable goddess as she was a wife and mother and she promised help and immortality to ordinary people and not just to Kings. As the more personal face of the Mother Earth, Gaia, her worship spread throughout Europe and continues to this day with the Fellowship of Isis being one of the largest Goddess-worshipping movements in the Western world. She represents total femininity; she overcomes death but is not above emotions and the everyday world. Alternative Mother Goddesses: Gaia, Inanna, Hathor, Rhiannon, Demeter.

Crone

The crone is perhaps the least appreciated and understood aspect of the Triple Goddess. This is not surprising as the Western world prizes youth and sexual attractiveness over wisdom,

experience and serenity. As the dark goddess she holds the keys to mysteries of life, death and rebirth. She accompanies us through our darkest times and encourages us to face our inner demons. She is mistress of magic, healing and herbs. She was much loved and respected in ancient worship and was thought to be a grandmotherly figure who helped people’s passing into the Otherworld. Hectate is deity of birth and the patroness of midwives as well as the Queen of Witches. As a moon goddess her rites are often performed at night. She is associated with crossroads where transformation is known to happen and the three paths of past, present and future meet. She is a wise guide and an initiator of women’s mysteries, she won’t pretend it will be easy but she promises to help if asked. Alternative Crone Goddesses: Sedna, Lilith, Hel, Morrigan, Cerridwen. There are many ways you can connect with the Goddess, Paganism in its many forms has always honoured both God and Goddess, dedicating festivals and rituals to each of her forms. Spend time in meditation to see who turns up or read one of the many books about her and see who ‘speaks’ to you. I have only begun to touch on the subject of the Goddess but I hope this introduction will prove as fruitful and abundant as the Goddess herself.

arsden Bay (pictured), nestling snugly on the coast of the Tyneside town of South Shields, is separated from the outside world by a steep cliff made from scratched magnesian limestone. Stand on the golden sands and look out to sea, and you will see nothing but clouds, waves and a huge edifice known as Marsden Rock. Oh, and the gulls. Graceful birds, soaring through the north wind with a haunting screech. Any time or no time, it scarcely seems to matter. There are caves at Marsden Bay, and many, many legends. In one cave, a family lived during Neolithic times. Their bones, uncovered in the 19th century, were displayed in a nearby museum for some time. Other bones were found; specifically those of the pine martin and the great auk. Neolithic cave dwellers fed on these it seems. Later, the Romans built a quay at Marsden, its outline just visible to the naked eye today. When ships docked, sailors threw coins into the water as an offering to the gods who had delivered them safely across the treacherous North Sea. Later, the Vikings came. One, Ralph Hardrasson, a Berserker, accidentally killed his former fiancée and her father. He buried them both at Marsden Bay, and his spirit was forced to walk its pebble-strewn beach for 1,000 years as a punishment. To my knowledge, he was last seen in the 1930s.

New home

A succession of eccentric visionaries dressed in rabbit-skin tunics lived in there too, supposedly guarding treasure deposited by the Roman legions before they left. Around 1843, Jack Bates moved to Marsden Bay with his wife Jessie. He worked as a quarryman until his retirement, but in 1782 an unscrupulous landlord removed them from their rented cottage. Homeless, they took to living in a cave at Marsden Bay. An optimist, Jack turned things around by converting the cave into a quaint dwelling, furnishing it with items fashioned from driftwood and wreckage. He eventually turned their home into a cosy café and made a small fortune. He even blasted a set of steps from the beach up to the top of the cliff to make access easier, thus earning the epithet ‘Blaster Jack’, which has remained his ever since. Jack and Jessie lived in the cave for ten happy years before dying within months of each other.

26 Vision 2

In 1826, Peter Allan, the landlord of The Highlander public house in nearby Whitburn, took up residence in the now derelict cave and enlarged it by blasting holes in the cliff face. He converted the cave into a public house, which seemed an odd thing to do considering its remote location. My research has led me to believe that Allan and his family were searching for the same treasure allegedly guarded by the hermits. The inn is still there, and open for business as a beautiful restaurant-cum-bar. Ghosts aplenty are said to haunt the Marsden Grotto Inn. Until recently, the tankard of an 18th century smuggler was left on the bar every evening, full of beer. By morning it would be empty. Doubting the veracity of this tale, a friend and I sat up with the landlord, keeping the tankard (right) under surveillance. We checked it every hour. At 4.20am it was still full. Some 50 minutes later it had only a few dregs in the bottom. I can verify that the tankard was always in view, and never touched. The ghost of Jibber John the wrecker, who was murdered by his colleagues for reportedly taking back-handers from the customs men, still wails at midnight strollers. Peter Allan’s wife, Lizzie, is still seen sitting in her rocking chair at the inn, and the odd Roman legionnaire is still glimpsed guarding the long-demolished quay. If you want to visit a place where time means nothing, and the souls of every era still await the arrival of ships from a bygone age, you could do worse than visit this enchanting place.

Anna Kaye.

Michael Looking Coyote.

Do you have a problem which you lack intuition to solve? Do you have any spiritual questions to which you seek answers? Native American Michael Looking Coyote will use his Spirit Stones and clairvoyant medium Anna Kaye will consult her Tarot to offer a fresh view on matters.

Unlucky in love

Recently, I have had real knock-backs in my ‘love life’. I split with my boyfriend of three years last October. I had a (very) brief fling with a friend, which ended in tears. In August, I met a lovely guy on a night out, who, for the next three weeks, texted me all the time and wanted me to go and see him. When I got my train ticket, he never got in touch with me again. Then, 6 weeks ago, I started seeing a guy I have liked for ages. But out of the blue, after 2 weeks, he finished with me because, he said, I acted jealous around his female friends. After a week he asked me back. Things were okay at first, but then he split with me again. I’m worried that I scared him away. I don’t know what to think of the situation. Anonymous.

Blocked path

I walk this earth with care, attention and respect, but my path is becoming blocked with obstacles from persons who wish my family and I hurt. This is slowing my learning progression. I have tried to speak with these people, but my words seem to fall on deaf ears. I am also experiencing many coincidences. I’ve just composed some music and named it ‘Visions’, I have also made friends with a Native American although I live in the UK. Then I was standing in front of this magazine called Vision, and there was a Native American on the front cover! Just coincidence? Nina, Cambridge.

Anna’s Tarot reading - the Sun, the Lovers & Judgement: The Sun card is telling me that you need to start focusing on yourself, building up your confidence and looking to the future. It is also a positive card regarding relationships. The next card is the Lovers. Together with the Sun card, it augurs well for the future and speaks of future relationships and possible marriage. The third card is Judgement, which depicts travel. I feel the person you will end up with in a happy and contented relationship is from adifferent place altogether, possibly overseas. Pick yourself up, brush yourself off and forget about the cads and the rogues. Looking Coyote’s Spirit Stone reading - the Racoon & the Porcupine: The Racoon totem wants you to be kind to yourself. Stop beating yourself up about your supposed inadequacies and start being choosier about whom you go out with. The Porcupine totem speaks of innocence and playfulness. These are fine qualities, but can get you into big trouble if you use them as standards by which to separate the ‘Mr Rights’ from the ‘Mr Wrongs’. Porcupine medicine also contains a degree of self-defence, as symbolised by those sharp quills. Be more selective about who you allow into your life, and go for the stable and mature type. They may not possess such a repertoire of smooth one-liners, but the chances are they’ll still be there when you wake up in the morning.

Looking Coyote’s Spirit Stone reading - the Coyote & the Frog: Actually, bad experiences are an integral part of your path and are helping you learn much more. Whenever you endure negative treatment at the hands of others you grow in both wisdom and experience. Be happy, for the coincidences are not coincidences at all, but rather the guiding hand of the Creator. The Coyote says that when bad things happen, try to focus on the lessons you have learned instead of the event itself. The Frog indicates that you are going through a cleansing period. Old thoughts and emotions will be replaced by fresh ones as you “walk your walk”, so walk in peace, Nina. Anna’s Tarot reading - the Sun, the Magician & Justice: The Sun card tells me that there is great happiness ahead for you, and any family issues will be resolved. The Magician card speaks of your creative side. There is strong healing energy with you. Also, writing will be very important to you as you move forward on your spiritual path. The Justice card tells me that everything will be balanced and in harmony as you continue your journey. I also feel that you will be fighting for major causes and issues that you feel strongly about. You have a strong voice that will be heard

Outside looking in

All my life I have felt that I do not fit in, especially with my family. I always feel like I am on the outside looking in and that they do not see or hear me. My friends eventually leave or fall away. My children don’t get what they want from me so I am of no use to them either. In previous jobs I have always been the ‘outsider’. Please could you tell me what my next move is? Will I ever fit in? Gem, North Yorks.

Looking Coyote’s Spirit Stone reading - the Porcupine & the Raven: Why do you want to “fit in”? Why assume that you’re the one with the problem? There are too many cardboard cut-outs in this world already – don’t join them! Porcupine speaks of your inner joy and, despite your feelings of worthlessness, you have much to offer this world. You are only “different” because you don’t follow the herd blindly. If people don’t like it, then that’s just tough. Raven testifies to your intensely spiritual nature. Explore your spiritual side and seek out those of like mind. Be happy, don’t change, and by being yourself, you will inspire those who really need to change to do so. Anna’s Tarot reading - the Chariot, Death, & the Emperor: You are not alone! Most psychics I know feel like this. The Chariot card shows that communication is important, so tell others how you feel. The Death card represents an ending – an end of one chapter and the start of a new one in your life. I feel you are about to make big changes on a personal level. Others will notice these changes and I think you’ll feel more confident. The Emperor card means you’ll be in a much stronger position as you move forward to the future. You’ll get the respect and recognition you deserve. Do develop your psychic side.

Anna’s Tarot reading - the Magician, the Fool, & the High Priestess: Suffering from

post-natal depression is not easy for any mum, and you have my sympathy. The Magician card: I can see you doing research, but working from home. I also feel you’ll be preparing important documents to do with this research. The Fool card shows new and wonderful directions are about to present themselves. Don’t be held back from new opportunities. The High Priestess l is telling you to let your inner voice be your guide. If you are to work as a volunteer doing what you love most, everything will fall into place. What is meant for us will not go past us.

Looking Coyote’s Spirit Stone reading - the Horse & the Badger: The Horse signifies journeys, either literal or spiritual. This indicates a change in the direction of your life. Your skills as a biologist and love of the environment will be put to good use, but perhaps not in the way you intended. The Badger speaks strongly of both your daughter’s need to be nurtured and of your need to do the nurturing. Your daughter must always take priority until she is old enough to stand on her own two feet, but, be assured, prayers to the Creator will open up a way for you to use your very special talents.

Tough love

I have to make a difficult decision between my daughter and my career. Your answer may be crucial. I suffer from postnatal depression but I do love her very much, especially now. However, next year I have the possibility of working as a volunteer in the field of biology conservation - I’m passionate about the natural world. I won’t see her for three months, when she will be two-years-old. I will miss her very much but at the same time I cannot stop thinking about moving on with my dream of working as a biologist. What should I do? Sandra, London.

Anna’s Tarot reading - Death, the Tower & Strength:

Disease dilemma

My son has Perthes Disease of the hip and walks with crutches. However, we live on the fourth floor which has no lifts. The doctor and the council’s medical unit recommend a move, but nothing ever happens. I owe rent arrears, but I was told this wouldn’t affect things. The council has suggested I move out of the area I have been living in for the past 22 years, but I want to stay. Joyce, Rotherhithe, London.

You don’t want to move to another area, and this is understandable. No-one likes such dramatic changes. The Death card tells me that your life is about to change, and the Tower card indicates a major upheaval due to a house move. Don’t be negative, however. The Strength card indicates you will be in a stronger, more positive position afterwards. If the council isn’t treating you fairly, see your local MP. Also check with your GP to see if there is a local group which supports other sufferers of Perthes Disease and their families.

Looking Coyote’s Spirit Stone reading - the Grey Squirrel, the Wolf, the Red-Tailed Hawk & the Polar Bear:

Grey Squirrel indicates bad choices and actions, so your rent arrears have indeed had some bearing on your current situation. You cannot re-write history, so redouble your efforts to make sure it doesn’t happen again. Wolf - the teacher – says you are engaging with the wrong people in trying to resolve your crisis. Seek out your local councillor and explain your situation. The Red-Tailed Hawk indicates your dilemma will eventually be resolved, Joyce, but Polar Bear cautions against upsetting those who are in a position to either help or hinder you as you seek alternative accommodation. Walk in peace.

Looking Coyote’s Spirit Stone reading - the Dragonfly & the Frog:

You are right not to be concerned about the benign spirit your husband saw beside you. The Dragonfly indicates that you will eventually come to understand who he was and why he visited you. I think the “alien” creature may have been imaginary and generated from deep within your subconscious. Because this “alien” may not be real, no protection is necessary. However, you do need to be protected from giving credence to such illusions and the “advice” they can sometimes dish out. Frog says cleanse your consciousness of the creature you saw. Should it appear again, simply tell yourself that it doesn’t exist. This will weaken the image and eventually eliminate it.

Anna’s Tarot reading - the Empress, the World & the Sun:

Before engaging in any spiritual activity, protect yourself. Visualise a circle of pure, white light surrounding your whole body. The Empress card tells me you will continue to expand and grow. I sense a lot of positive energy around you. I also sense you will work with angels. The World card tells me there are a lot of new doors about to open up for you: you have healing abilities without a doubt. The Sun card indicates future experiences of a pleasant and positive kind, so don’t be afraid, because there is someone from a higher plane protecting you.

Enlightening auras

I have been working on energising my aura, with help from my husband, after a workshop. At the end I put the light out to see the colours as we had seen them in the workshop. My husband panicked as he could see a dark-coloured man over me. I knew this to be my spirit guide. Over my husband I saw an alien being. I wanted to touch it. Was that real? When he turned the light on it disappeared. Should I be protected from this being? I did not feel afraid. Yvonne, North Wales.

hen we use our psychic abilities it is vital that we protect ourselves in a spiritual way. This may be in the form of saying a few words, a prayer or simply imagining that you are placed in a golden bubble of light. You engineer the best form of protection, as your intentions will instantly multiply the outcome. Try and get into the habit of grounding then protecting before embarking on any psychic work as this will ensure that you are working at the highest vibrations, without putting your own energies at risk. You will also find it useful to help you deal with any situation in life that is making you feel uncomfortable. Protection exercise: After grounding, imagine that you are sitting in a golden bubble of light. Wave your arms in a circle around you if this helps you visualise it. Imagine you are completely encapsulated in the bubble and can feel it, sense it and breath it. You can view the world outside, but you feel a warm calming energy that comes with the protection you have sought. Auras We all have both a physical and spiritual body. The physical body is the body that we see when we look in the mirror, and how other people view us. The spiritual body is the auric field around our physical body, in other words - the colours and energies of the soul of our true self.

Within the aura each of us has seven main energy points. These are known as chakras. Each chakra is a vortex of energy and is situated at different points of the body, represented by an individual colour and function. The chakras play a fundamental part in the role of a psychic because opening the chakras is like opening the spiritual and psychic doorway to life. Often we hear the phrase ‘opening up’ used by many experienced psychics. The phrase simply means that we are opening up our senses so that we are ready to receive messages in the way that feels most natural to you. In order to do this, the chakras need to be open and receptive like a beacon, relaying and transmitting messages and energies. Opening up To open up, sit in a quiet room and after grounding and protecting yourself, concentrate on your breathing as this is your life force. Take some slow steady breaths and concentrate on feeling your lungs fill up with air, then slowly release. As you repeat this you will be aware of your whole body relaxing and you will be entering a level of deeper consciousness. Next imagine that you are breathing in a white light, coming up through your feet through the tree roots. The white light should flow through your toes, calming and relaxing the muscles as it travels up the front of your legs and body and over your head and down your spine and arms before returning the

journey down your legs and into your feet. Next imagine your base chakra like a bright red rose which is in bud. Imagine that you have a red light coming from your feet up to the base chakra. When the red light reaches it, imagine that the red flower starts to spin and opens up into full bloom. Repeat this with all the chakras, always using the colour associated with it (sacral chakra - orange; solar plexus - yellow; heart - green; throat - blue; third eye or brow - indigo; crown - violet). Once you have done this you are now completely opened up. Open your eyes and see the world in colours. Closing down When the chakras open we feel totally alive and energised, but we cannot live in this state all the time, as it also leaves us open to pick up on negativity around us. It is vital that we close down the chakras after doing any psychic work so that we can function at a balanced state. To close down, simply imagine that each colour light is leaving its chakra by allowing the chakra flower to spin and close back to a bud. As the bud is closing, imagine that the colour is travelling down into your feet again and into the earth. Once you have mastered these exercises you will be ready to move on to receiving and interpreting messages and allowing the psychic inside to finally transpire. or many centuries ‘wise folk’ have handed their recipes for magic down to those who would follow in their path - spells learned at a mother’s knee for those living life tuned into the energies of the natural world. All plants, trees, flowers and seeds have vibrations, as do crystals, rocks and even the planet earth herself. Dream Pillows tap into these energies to bring about a gentle magical change into a person’s life, whilst the dreamer’s subconscious floats on the clouds of the ether. Flowers and herbs that contain different vibrations are collected and mixed together to blend and produce a magical effect. This is known as Magical Herbalism and is different to ordinary herbalism, as the uses are not medicinal but magical. This use of plants has been known for centuries. Long before the ancient Egyptians used to send their daily gifts of incense floating upward to appease their gods, the ancient shamen would use their

campfires to burn various plants to produce certain effects within the gathering people of their tribe. Mix the ingredients of the desired pillow at the right time of the lunar cycle, ie, new moon to full moon (‘waxing’) to bring things into your life; or full moon to new moon (‘waning’) to move things out of your life, and the desired effect can be helped. Dream Pillows can also be used to enhance sleep. Going to sleep with the perfume of flowers around you can promote restful sleep or more pleasurable dreams depending on what you want.

Putting rose petals and chamomile together can give you a feeling of comfort and safety, add rosemary and you add an ingredient that helps you to remember your dreams. If you suffer with nightmares, put anise in your pillow to chase them away. Be careful not to mix too many scents together or you will create a ‘monster’ and wonder what is making the awful smell! One of my own recipes for sleeping is a minute amount of hops, ie, one flower head plus chamomile, lavender, and rose petals, mixed together with a pinch of ground orange peel to ‘set’ the perfume. Put this into a muslin bag and place in the middle of a small pillow with soft packing around it so that if you lie on it in the night, it will not disturb your pleasant dreams.

Make your own Dream/Wish Pillow:

When making your own pillow, please note to make it effective, all ingredients have to be mixed by hand and in an earthenware bowl or a wooden bowl, as these are natural products and help with the magic. Should you want to draw anything toward you, then the time to make a pillow should be the new moon to the full moon (waxing), and to rid yourself of anything the full moon to the new moon (waning).

suffer with nightmares, put anise “Ifinyou your pillow to chase them away. ” To make a Good Luck Pillow:

Make your pillowcase leaving an end open for the contents. GREEN is the colour of balance, money and luck (like the four leaf clover).

You will need: = 2 pieces of material of about 20 cm in length (to make the pillowcase); = Stuffing for the pillow; = A small muslin bag (to hold the pillow’s ingredients); = Various ingredients for the appropriate wish.

Fill your pillow half full with the stuffing. You will need:; = Mix the ingredients in a bowl by hand; = 1 teaspoon of chamomile (to give creativity to your wish); = 1 teaspoon of all spice (for luck); = 1 teaspoon of mint (dried); = 1 handful of dried rose petals; = A handful of lavender flowers (for sleep); = 2 heads of hop flowers (for sleep).

You may also enhance the pillow by using the right coloured material associated with the wish, ie, RED for passion, PINK for love, and ORANGE or YELLOW to give strength to the sick etc.

As you are mixing these together make your wish with intention. Place these into a muslin bag and put into the pillow. Continue to put stuffing on top until the pillow is as plump as you want it.

Stitch up the open end of your pillow, shake it to get the perfume flowing around and take to bed with you. The pillow works at sending the perfume out into the air and also into your subconscious as you sleep. By putting intention into your pillow it will help you to bring about changes. When these pillows are constructed by myself, certain powers are called upon to grace the making and infuse with their magical powers. These powers harnessed eminate from the planets, the stars, the earth, air, fire, water, the gentle Goddess and angels – associated with specific tasks etc, and many more depending on what is to be achieved. Georgia Mead looks at the role of animals in a pagan society.

hen you think of familiars, images of ugly witches huddled around a black cauldron with cats running around may very well cross your mind. It was mistakenly believed that familiars were a gift from Satan and this is what gave the familiars of old such hard lives and negative images. The largest erroneous belief of the uninitiated was that a familiar was always a black cat. In actual fact, all animals of all species can become a positive and loving familiar - if it’s meant to be. They play many different and important roles in our lives; they can help with magical work, healing not only their partners but friends and family too, or warning them when they sense danger or negative energies. The most popular familiar for a witch today is the cat, dog, bird, snake or toad. These animals will live and work with the witch. Most witches will protect their familiars with magic and will not treat them as pets but rather as magical partners. In exchange, the familiar will offer the witch protection, healing and because of their sensitivity to psychic vibrations, aid in connecting with the spirit world.

You’ll find that if you have a pet that is a familiar you’ll see some signs. You’ll also find that you grow a powerful psychic link with your pet and they’ll show interest in things such as your ritual work or being close to you or friends in times of stress or illness. They’re very sensitive to people who are unwell and even the most boisterous of animals will become docile in the presence of an infirm person. Don’t be surprised if you have a spirit familiar. This is a pet that has passed over but still feels the need to aid you, perhaps through dreams or during meditation, continuing to aid you as they did while they lived. Some people prefer

to visualize a familiar and use such creatures from nature and myth as dolphins, unicorns or dragons to aid them. If you don’t have a pet, how can you find your familiar? Well, you can’t summon a familiar to you, nor can you demand that they come to you. The best approach is to open your doors and send out the message that you would be honoured to receive the presence of your familiar when they’re ready. Don’t expect them in any particular form - they may just appear on your doorstep or they’ll arrive when the time is just right. Your familiar may or may not stay with you for all of their life, if you no longer need them, they may very well move on. A good exercise is to try communicating with your familiar through the medium of meditation. Spend some time meditating in a different room from them and after a while, try to call them with your mind. Make yourself accessible to them so that they aren’t uncomfortable with the process and repeat this for as long as it takes to start working. This is a great exercise and can have amazing results!

Clare Sheridan catches a glimpse of the future with a tarot class from Vision’s white witch, Georgia Mead.

T

reated with suspicion and widely acknowledged as tools of the occult, tarot cards have a dubious reputation. Today they are one of the most common divinatory tools available – but these detailed packs of cards were not always a method of seeing the future. Originally created as a simple pack of playing cards, the tarot did NOT originate in Egypt, contrary to popular belief. Picture Northern Italy in the early 15th century and you will have a more accurate idea of where they came from. Probably used by noblemen and women, they were thought to have been used to play a game similar to Bridge. Despite the fact that they have a reputation of being condemned by the Church, there are no records of tarot cards in The Inquisition’s findings of blasphemy. There were reputedly objections from the church after the Reformation due to images including the Pope, but the offending illustrations were subsequently replaced. Any religious intolerance would more likely have stemmed from the cards’ use in gambling, rather than any occult connection. There is no standard deck of cards, although the most popular today seems to be the Rider Waite pack – created in 1909 by the Order of the Golden Dawn. These were the ones which Georgia used to teach me in her lesson. “The Rider Waite cards are very full of information – good for beginners,” she said. “It’s about what they mean to you. I have a different approach to other people. It doesn’t matter how you learn the basics, the card or spread you draw may mean something different to different people. That doesn’t mean it’s wrong. It’s what you interpret from the cards. “It’s easy, with practice and dedication it is relatively straight forward to learn the art of tarot.” She used the large version of the cards to ensure easy explanation of the imagery. There are 78 cards a deck, as opposed to oracle card decks (angel cards/goddess cards etc) whose numbers vary. It may sound like an impossible task to memorize all of them, but Georgia made a molehill out of a mountain.

A typical Celtic cross spread with Rider Waite cards.

The basics are surprisingly simple. There are, of course, years of practice ahead for committed readers, but getting to grips with the basics is not as hard as it sounds. The pack is split into major and minor arcana. “There are 22 major arcana,” she said. “The major arcana represent a journey through life – events in your life, major changes. The cards 0-21 form a complete circle.” The major arcana include infamous cards like The Devil, The Fool, and The Tower etc. This is followed by the 56 minor arcana. There are four suits: the cups; the wands; the pentacles; and the swords. “These cover day to day occurrences – the normal things in life,” said Georgia. “1 is the beginning and 10 the outcome; the page, knight, queen and king usually represent people.” The cups represent emotions/love life; the wands represent working life/business; the pentacles represent finances/money issues; and the swords are usually a sign of possible

conflict. This is, of course, a very basic explanation, interpretation of each card depends on the cards drawn around it. There is no need to memorize each card – the colourful illustration on each one serves as ample reminder to its meaning. The cards can be used to answer specific questions, general life queries, and even predictions for coming months. Simple spreads include the three-card past, present and future spread and the Celtic cross spread – which, again, has a past, present and future premise but incorporates a prediction for the next six months. Georgia’s simple, no-nonsense approach made the lesson fun and easy to understand. As she says, there is always one thing to remember: “Readings are never written in stone – more like chalk. There’s always the option to change if you don’t like the look of an impending situation.”

hen I was at school I hated anything to do with figures. Then I discovered numerology and I found how this ancient science could help me understand what I was meant to be doing - my life changed completely. The science dates back several thousand years and is thought to have been developed by the Chaldeans – the prophets of ancient Egypt. The numerology I practise is that taught by the Greek philosopher and

mathematician Pythagoras, who lived in the 6th century BC. In ancient times the great knowledge of the known world was not separated as it is nowadays, so astrology and astronomy went hand in hand, as did philosophy and mathematics. Everything in the world has a numerical base: there are 60 seconds in a minute, 60 minutes in an hour and 24 hours to a day. There are 7 days in a week, 28 days to a lunar cycle, 12 months in a year..... it’s all about numbers. A ‘novena’ is a religious ritual which lasts for 9 days! We live in cycles of 9 days, and 9 years (in the area of spiritual and personal

development). Have you ever wondered what we would do if we didn’t have numbers? There would be chaos! For many centuries people all over the world have known about their power. In fact, parents in Japan always count the number of brush-strokes in a child’s name before choosing it for their baby. Some people won’t even buy a house if

Celebrity numbers:

Lifepaths:

the number isn’t right for them. Most people would believe that they have a ‘lucky number’, so the secret has been with us for some time. Working with numbers makes perfect sense to me, and I now give ‘Lifepath Readings’ to people from places as far away as New Zealand and New York. How can I do this? Let me introduce the basics of numerology and help you, too, find your pathway in life. The reason most of us don’t succeed at things is not because we’re stupid, it’s just that we are not doing the right things. The secret of numbers is quite simple. You don’t have to be an expert in maths, all you need do is add two single numbers together and you’ve taken the first steps in this form of divination. The most important number of all is your date of birth. This symbolises your ‘destiny’ or ‘Lifepath’.

15 09 19 84 6 9 1 3 6 4 1 Despite being the second-born, he will always want to stand out from his older brother who would be next in line for the throne. He will need to do things differently to others, and will possibly feel that he never quite fits in. The secret to fulfilling a number 1 Lifepath is to be ‘a shepherd’ rather than just ‘a sheep’, so Prince Harry will need to make his own decisions and will not take orders easily!

Number 5: If you know anything about singer Tina Turner’s life, you’ll know that to become the success she is today she had to face a lot of conflict and change. It’s no surprise that her Lifepath number is 5 (November 26th 1939). 26 11 19 39 8 2 1 3 1 4 5

I always write the numbers down-ward as shown. It’s easier to add them up this way. Also, you will see that when I add 3 + 9 (= 12) I then add the 1 + 2 to get a final number 3, or in the case of 19, add 1 + 9 , (= 10), then add 1+0 = 1, and 11 = 2. It may seem a little confusing at first, but if you study the examples below left, you should be able to grasp how it’s done.

“You don’t have to be an expert in maths, all you need to do is add two single numbers together” As you can see, you don’t have to be a mathematician to work out your numbers. It really is as easy as adding two numbers together. So, if you want your life to become simple and a success, the first step is to discover your Lifepath number. This is the number you were born with, it’s like a code that you can refer to again and again as you go through your life so that you’ll know if you’re doing what you’re meant to be doing! Your Lifepath Number tells you what you need to do in your life so that you can fulfil your destiny. The word ‘destiny’ is really the same as ‘destination’ or ‘path’. Write out your own date of birth in the way shown above. What final number do you have? Check the guidelines over the page relating to each number. Are you doing the right things for your Lifepath?

I

have long harboured a secret desire to be Robert the Bruce. After all, I have the legs for a kilt (I also have the arms for a straightjacket). I’ve often imagined myself running through heather-filled glens, with my sporran swinging freely in the breeze. A carry over from this highland life could be my love of whisky - I polish off a bottle a night! Many of us would like to think that in a previous life we have been somebody wildly exotic or important at the very least a Pope or an Egyptian Queen. I might have been a vicious Viking warrior called Nigel or, more likely, an organ-grinder’s monkey. With this in mind, I recently attended a professional workshop on Past Life Regression. Our class numbered around 20: young, middle-aged, old age and new age. One man had an orange Mohican, a bit unusual for a pensioner, but hey, this is Cornwall. The dress code ranged from jeans and t-shirt to Gandalf look-alikes. We were taken through a relaxing, guided meditation, and I found myself in a shallow hypnotic state. The lecturer approached each of us in turn and asked what we could see. True to form, most people’s experiences were of ordinary lives; soldiers from all periods of history and men and women working in service.

Cor!

The teacher came over to me and placed his hand on my shoulder; here was my big moment…“Tell me where you are and what you see”. Cor blimey… I was a chimney sweep! Making a sweep exotic was even beyond the skills of Dick Van Dyke. To make matters worse, I used to steal from my clients (if any reader feels that in a previous life they were robbed by their chimney sweep, I hereby apologise, and no, you can’t have your silver tankards back!). Most people discussed their experiences calmly, until the teacher approached a large lady sitting to my left.

Nick Richardson takes a light-hearted look at past life regression…

“Tell me where you are and what…” “I AM VESUVIUS MAXIMUS,” she roared, jumping to her feet, “AND I DEMAND RESPECT”. Her voice rattling the light fittings, “I COMMAND LEGIONS OF MEN AND I DO NOT SUFFER FOOLS GLADLY!” Was this Russell Crowe’s auntie? I opened one eye and sneaked a look. Had we found an actress? The teacher obviously thought so, “No kidding,” he said flatly, and quickly moved on. As we chatted at the end of the session, the teacher explained that more information might come to us over the next few days, giving verification to our experiences. I was prompted to share my own understanding of this. During a previous past-life experience, I had regressed to Mali, in Africa. This session had been recorded, but what I hadn’t shared at the time, for fear of ridicule, was my awareness of a spinning vortex of light above me, which I took to be some kind of craft. Two days later I was telling a friend about the regression. “If you were in Mali, perhaps you were one of the Dogon Tribe,” she suggested. “I have a film of them somewhere.” We watched the film; the villages and towns were exactly as I had described them from memory. “They

have a tradition of encounters with extraterrestrials,” she said. “Apparently, they knew about Sirius B, a star invisible to the naked eye, long before powerful telescopes discovered it.” I was stunned; convinced I had imagined the spinning lights. Was new evidence now suggesting I hadn’t? At the end of the evening a strange vision made its way towards me. A man of around 60 came and sat at my side. He wore a bright purple shell-suit with brown brogue shoes, and he was sporting a Kevin Keegan perm. “You lak ze bum me up Scottie?” He said. I looked around for Matron. “I beg your pardon?” “Ze Shtar Treck, you like, yar? Captain Kirk?” He turned out to be German; my UFO story had intrigued him. Within minutes of talking to him I felt guilty about my initial reaction to his appearance. He was an interesting and polite man and we chatted intently for over an hour. Past lives are intriguing; however the message I took home wasn’t ‘don’t judge a book by its cover’, or indeed, ‘never judge a magazine by its columnist’, but was in this case, ‘never judge an owner by his shell suit’! Sandie Gustus from the International Academy of Consciousness (IAC) explores the realms of Out-of-Body and Near Death Experiences.

aymond Moody’s groundbreaking work on the Near Death Experience (NDE), Life After Life, was roundly criticized by the mainstream scientific community when it was published 30 years ago. They dismissed the NDE as a type of hallucination, resulting either from lack of oxygen to the brain at the moment of clinical death, or as an effect of medication. Despite such formal skepticism however, an astonishing 13 million copies of the book have since sold. Today, 30 years on, large-scale scientific research into the NDE phenomenon is taking place worldwide, largely putting an end to the view that the NDE is but a figment of the ‘new age’ imagination. In Britain, following the lead of neuropsychiatrist Dr Peter Fenwick, a second generation of researchers are conducting experiments, interviewing patients and collating significant data from intensive care units in hospitals around the country. Of all the aspects common to the NDE however, perhaps the most intriguing is that the experience is for so many, a life-changing event. To be fully aware, awake, and mentally alert yet not inside the physical body is to experience a state of being that bypasses all dogmas and belief systems, and dismantles deep seated reference points that include only that which can be perceived with the human sensory organs as reality. For example: = People are able to verify that their consciousness (awareness, soul, spirit, self etc) doesn’t die along with the physical body; = This enables them to view their existence in a broader context that extends beyond the physical body and beyond this physical life, to logically

40 Vision 2

The tunnel effect is an oft cited phenomenon of the Near Death Experience.

include past lives, future lives and periods between lives spent in non-physical dimensions; = Many are often inspired, therefore, to reprioritize their life after surviving clinical death and seek ways to inject it with greater meaning; = Some have interactions with more advanced, evolved Helpers (popularly known as spirit guides or guardian angels) during the NDE and return to physical life understanding that these ‘people’ are always around, interacting with and assisting us on a daily basis; = Others gain insights into the law of karma (ie action and reaction or cause and effect), seeing that their actions in this life are not isolated, arbitrary events without consequences; = Most are humbled by the experience of having tapped into a whole new world inhabited by those who have already died, and return to physical life no longer fearing death and wanting to know more. The good news for anyone who hasn’t

had an NDE but who would like to experience these life-changing benefits first-hand, is that the NDE is a type of Out-of-Body Experience (OBE), a phenomenon that is as natural to humans as breathing and sleeping. The results of an online survey launched by researchers Wagner Alegretti and Nanci Trivellato of the International Academy of Consciousness (IAC) in 1999, to which over 9,000 internet users have so far responded, show that many different characteristics of the OBE phenomenon are shared by people around the world, irrespective of their age, gender, nationality, ethnicity, cultural background, religion, level of education or socio-economic status. Evidence shows that the vast majority of humanity experiences some degree of separation between their physical body and astral body (sometimes called etheric double) several times during the natural course of nightly sleep. The reason so few of us are aware of this fact is because we experience poor levels

Vision 2

28/1/05

12:24 pm

Page 41

of awareness or lucidity whilst out of the body and partially because of this, either don’t remember what happened or confuse the OBE with a dream. These hindrances can be overcome, however, by anyone who has the will to do it. No particular psychic ability is required. Additional benefits of having regular OBEs and lucidly exploring non-physical dimensions include being able to: = Prepare for what will happen after death by visiting non-physical dimensions frequently and familiarizing ourselves with these environments; = Give assistance to those who are isolated, confused and in despair after death precisely because they weren’t prepared. Some, in such a condition, don’t even realize they are dead. When out of the body however, we can access the energies generated by our physical

body (via the silver cord) and can use these dense energies to help others in need; = Access details of our past lives and periods between lives, as these memories are stored in the ‘astral’ brain in which we manifest during an OBE. This information helps us to identify the weak traits of our personalities that we take with us from one life to the next, repeating them over and over again, because we never do anything about overcoming them and changing, eg a weak trait such as laziness may prevent us from realizing our true potential. For those who are interested in exploring the out-of-body experience further, the best route would be to source an educational organization free of any mystical or religious affiliations that can provide the required theoretical

background and teach a variety of practical techniques for leaving the body. It is important to evaluate any organization’s credibility and sincerity by discerning whether the teaching methodology requires that participants ‘buy into’ or ‘believe’ what they are being told, or whether they are encouraged to have their own experiences and gather evidence of the multi-dimensional nature of their existence for themselves. xploring dreams is about embarking on a journey into new dimensions: a path to self-discovery. Dreams are unconscious processes made accessible to us in the form of images. Those images have been constructed by our psyche and based on our personal history. Thus, when working with dreams, we draw knowledge not only from the traditional fields of psychology or mythology, but also from a unique source of wisdom: our intuition. The tarot can help us to access that pool of wisdom and hopefully get us closer to our Divine Essence. According to several sources, the word ‘tarot’ originates either from: Hebrew and the Tora, meaning the Law; or Latin and Rota, meaning the wheel or the path. Although the origins of the tarot are unclear, traces of similar cards can be found around 1200 in the Mediterranean region. Where they come from remains a mystery. However, some evidence suggests that tarot has been imported by various groups, such as the Bohemians, the Arabs and crusaders. The tarot has been known as the Book of Destiny. Some believed the content to be sacred, based on thousands of years of ancient wisdom. The images represented in the tarot are symbolic representations of this ancient knowledge and accessible only to those prepared to embrace a process of initiation. The last hundred years have seen a revival of interest in the use of tarot. Hundred of books and new tarot decks have been published to meet the demand of an ever growing public. Traditional tarot decks such as Rider Waite or Marseille, consist of 78 cards known as arcana. The deck is divided into two sections: = Twenty-two major arcana which are concerned with all the stages we encounter on this journey called life. The major arcana possess an extraordinary energetic fluidity. = Fifty-six minor arcana which are

42 Vision 2

divided into four categories: Cups; Pentacles; Swords; and Wands. These Arcana deal with everyday aspects of living. As we begin to work with the tarot, we enter in a process of transformation. Gradually, the images reveal their hidden messages and we begin to discover the meaning behind each symbol and archetype.

Exploration

The conscious messages in our dreams can be explored using the tarot’s wisdom. The method is simple and involves little preparation. Before exploring a dream, we need to spend some time recording the dream. Every detail is important including people, animals, places, smell and colours. We need to relax away from noise and distractions. Next, we formulate a specific question about the dream and we choose one Arcana from the deck. Then we can begin to focus our attention on the picture. The more we relax, the more we get closer to our higher self. The emerging impressions may be a flow of thoughts, emotions or memories. The associations we create are unique to us. We are interpreters of our own dreams! A friend of mine, called Marie used the tarot to clarify a reccurring dream. In the dreams she was followed by a large dog. The arcana she drew was The Fool (major arcana). When Marie saw The Fool, she expressed a sense of surprise. She noticed the dog in the picture and began to focus her attention on

the image. Gradually, she spoke about her impressions and feelings. She laughed when she identified the dog as her mother who was constantly nagging her. She recognised that she was torn between her need to be close to her mother and her wish for independence. She was thinking about moving out of the family nest. The dog in Marie’s dream was an important symbol, representing affection and protection (from her mother). She recognised the risks involved in becoming dependant and saw the opportunities to moving forward. The tarot helped Mary to make sense of her dream. She took time to examine her situation from a higher perspective. Choosing The Fool was no coincidence! This example illustrates how the tarot can be used as support to dream work. The esoteric knowledge of the tarot is not necessary when used as a complement to dream work. The images act like windows opening onto new horizons.

Everybody dreams! Dreams can help you to gain insight into your own symbolic language thus making sense of your internal dialogue. Edgar Cayce believed that “dreams can help us to connect with the supra consciousness, are a source of great knowledge and wisdom, and a path to spiritual awakening”. Here is the third part of Vision’s monthly alphabet round-up of the most common dream scenarios.

Common dreams beginning with the letter Cakes: Cakes represent treats or special occasions. Exploring your dream may help you to understand how you interact with others. Are you too sweet? A celebration is to be expected in the near future. Occasionally, this may warn you to stay away from sugary food. Candle: The burning flame of a candle represents your individuality and spiritual path. Dreaming of a burning candle is a good sign … remember the saying: ‘there is light at the end of the tunnel’. A non-burning candle may simply indicate that you are going through a difficult time, or you feel ‘burned out’. Cave: A cave is a dark and humid place, an archetype for the womb, sometimes announcing a pregnancy. Caves are places where rituals such as initiations, the passing from one state to another, are performed. Spiritually this may correspond to your own development. Psychologically your unconscious mind is encouraging you to tap into your own resources. Why stay in the shade when you can enjoy the sunshine? Cemetery: Traditionally, cemeteries are places where we bury the dead. Dreaming of a cemetery may suggest that internal desires, unfulfilled ambitions or regrets need to be acknowledged. Perhaps, you are reconnecting with ancestral wisdom or communicating with the spirit world. Chain: Chains are symbols of communication, union, marriage and the collectiveness. They may represent your obligations and

responsibilities. Or, it may suggest that you are being prevented from moving forward. What is holding you back? Circle: Circles have magical and protective properties. They are used in rituals and have greatly influenced the design of talismans and jewellery. Circles can be interpreted as an unconscious awareness of your precious connection with others and with the Divine. Practically, you may consider a change in your daily routine. Climbing: Climbing is a dynamic process which suggests that you are moving forward, perhaps learning or developing new skills. You may be aware of the risks involved but the main goal is to reach your destination. Don’t look back! Clothes: The clothes you wear may confirm how you feel about yourself. Beautiful clothes may be a reflection of your sense of self worth. Old and damaged clothes can indicate a lack of confidence or self-esteem. Clothes can cover aspects of your self that you wish to hide or protect from others. Clouds: Clouds are representations of current obstacles in your life. Do not loose hope and faith for the situation is only temporary. We need the clouds to carry the rain and fertilise the soil! This is a time for reflection and growth. Colours: Colours appear to represent emotional states. They reinforce the meaning of the dream images. For example, a dominance of red may indicate a high level of

‘C’

physical activity, passion or anger. Your intuition will guide you! Corridor: A corridor may be symbolic of the birth canal, a transition from one world to the next, from the known to the unknown, from darkness to light. The corridor in a house connects all the rooms. A visit in the living room may suggest you to explore your creativity. The bedroom may invite you to rest or be more passionate about your work and your life! Crowd: A crowd can be a reflection of how busy your life is. Perhaps, so much so, that you have little time for yourself. As an observer, you may see yourself lost in the crowd. Give yourself some space. Remember to celebrate your uniqueness and individuality. Crystals: Crystals are archetypes which have appeared in dreams more frequently in recent years. The crystals may invite you to recognise your inner beauty or to use your healing powers. Dreaming of crystals may symbolise your spiritual ideals or needs to develop your abilities. Your higher self will guide you. Like the crystals, you too are special. Cups: Symbolically, cups represent female characteristics of receptivity. Cups are associated with feelings, emotions, fertility and intuitive abilities. The dream may invite you to identify your emotions or how to be creative in a more productive way. It may simply announce a pregnancy or the birth of a new project or idea. You may have to accept and develop untapped psychic abilities.

e’s been a barber for 23 years and makes his living cutting hair, but not many people realise that he has even dallied in gymnastics! Medium Gordon Smith used to be the Scottish Champion specialising in floor exercises, before he became known as one of the UK’s most popular mediums! Have you always seen spirits? “As a child I saw many ghosts but they always appeared solid to me. I was never frightened and it was only the adults’ reactions around me that made me realise this was unusual. “I used to feel people in my room but others around me would say ‘It’s your imagination’, or tell me to go back out and play or go back to sleep’. I had not seen a full-blown materialisation for years until I was in my twenties when a friend appeared to me who’d died in a house fire. It was then I started going to a spiritualist church.” Did you find the support you needed there? “As I walked into the church a medium pointed me out and said, ‘The spirits are so glad you are here because you are a medium’. She predicted that in 5 year’s time I would be doing what she was doing, and she was right! I mainly did healing then one night the medium did not turn up and I was asked to stand up and give readings. It was like I had arrived home. I felt like I was doing what I was supposed to be doing. It was a beautiful feeling.” When did you first come into contact with mediumship? “When I was 10-years-old my parents took me with them when they visited a family friend. It had been several years since they’d met up, and this woman had become interested in spiritualism. She asked my parents if she could do some

Jacky Newcomb (left) discovers the man behind the comb. healing on me and my parents had no idea what she meant. It was then that she told them I was a medium and would travel the world with my work. You’ve been reading for many years now, are there ever any funny moments? “Many. I once gave survival evidence to an elderly lady during a church reading and she was happy to receive all the messages until near the end when a spirit came through by the name of Peter. ‘This is your husband,’ I told the woman. I was

I

t was in his late teens that Gordon started doing back flips in the streets around his home when a friend suggested that he join the local gymnastic club. Eventually he was persuaded, and by his own accounts he moved on very quickly. Gordon worked hard on the floor exercises, which he continued right up until the age of 19 and he was subsequently chosen to be part of the Scottish squads for the Commonwealth Games...although he never actually made it to the games.

“It was like I had arrived home. I felt like I was doing what I was supposed to be doing.”

shocked when she started swearing at me, ‘Get that … man out of here!’ She was yelling and shouting and everyone was laughing. She’d had a hard time with him when he was alive and thought that she was rid of him now that he was dead. I assured her that he had just come to say sorry! Eventually she did calm down! “I remember another time when a reader was talking to a man with an obvious hair piece on. She got her words mixed up and told him, ‘You have an Indian guide…he’s showing me his toupee..!” Luckily the man took it as a joke and suggested, ‘Maybe he’s the one who scalped me!” Do you work with spirit guides who help you with readings? “I have several guides and each one has a calling card. I recognise which one is which. I know that if a specific guide comes through for example that a person needs healing and so on. I call my main guide Chi (pronounced Chee). I feel that my guides help protect me and won’t allow anything bad to happen.”

Gordon still retains a keen interest in the games even today although now he just watches! “Age catches up with you,” he laughs. You seem surprised at your fame now? “It amazes me. We’ve had to arrange ticket only events for book signings. At one book signing, a woman told me how a reading I did made her husband cry. People seem genuinely stirred by mediumship now. At another book signing a guy shouted out to me, ‘I would never have come to something like this before…I really think you are for real’. Which is really nice.” You’ve just written your second book. Are there any more in the pipeline? “Yes, three more have been commissioned. I really enjoyed writing them and with my first book, I spent three months just reading about other mediums and how they work.

My publishers have arranged for me to tour all over the world to promote it. It gives me the opportunity to reach many people and we are organising charity readings in some larger venues. “I’m not against mediums charging for their work - as some people have misquoted me as saying. Many of my friends do charge because that is what they do for a living. But I earn my living as a barber and obviously from my books.”

So what plans do you have for the future? “I want to do more teaching. At every public demonstration I try and tell people a little about what I do. When I was in London the other night I asked my spirit guides if they would really help me and the messages that come through on that night were really great. I don’t think I’ve ever had so many messages in such a short time and so many different types. It really reached a lot of people.”

Precious power stones.. When buying a piece of crystal jewellery or a pretty rose quartz heart for a friend, do we truly understand the full power of what we hold in our hands? What can we do with it, where does it come from and how can we find the potential of what we have, using it to our greatest advantage? Crystals not only come from the earth, they possess its true spirit and so conduct its natural magic with great intensity. When looking for crystals for magical purposes we ask that you look for a responsible source as much damage has been caused by the mining of crystals. Ask where they came from and be prepared to pay a little more for a better crystal.

Charms

Charms are a very universal type of crystal magic and they can come in many forms, from necklaces and rings, to broaches and carved animals. If you’re looking for a charm for a specific purpose, ask in your local new age shop for advice as most proprietors have an extensive knowledge of crystals and their uses. You’ll also find a wealth of information on the internet. Tu

Crystal Bracelets fill your whole body with magic as they are placed directly on the pulse that sends your life force around your body. Hematite is well known for bringing balance in times of stress, and is great to wear for an interview. Amethyst will help you to heal after illnesses and moonstone is said to be wonderful for those who wish to fall pregnant.

Pendants

Crystal pendants are for those who either can’t stop talking or never seem to get a word in. A short chain with a bloodstone crystal will give you the courage to speak your mind and tell the truth, as will tiger’s eye and turquoise. Wearing a sapphire will help to relax you, so perhaps you’ll be able to hear someone else’s voice instead of your own for a change! Crystal animals are very popular gifts, and with the added value of magic, they really are special. Choose the animal that you think is most appropriate. For example: a dog carved from rose quartz for a friend shows that you are loyal and loving. An elephant made from citrine will purportedly bring great wealth and good fortune, so this is an excellent gift for someone in, or beginning a new business. When you have the crystal piece you want, give it a little of yourself. Say a few words aloud to your crystal about your situation, or that of the person you are giving it to, and wait for the magic to begin.

Rings

Crystal rings symbolise eternity - a neverending circle, so depending on which finger you place the ring and what crystal it holds, it’ll show what it is that you wish to endure. Diamonds are a girl’s best friend and they’re also virtually indestructible – a diamond engagement ring symbolises the same property, ie that the relationship will never break up. A ruby ring is a gift of passion with its fiery red colour and a rose quartz ring symbolises true love.

Creating kitchen magic..

When we think of appropriating herbs for use in magic we imagine an old woman searching the forest, collecting plants from the ground and placing them into a hand-woven basket - not a woman on the go, running into her nearest health shop! But that’s what today’s witch or Wiccan may very well do. Even though we would all love to grow and dry our own herbs for magical use - and many still do - our lifestyles very rarely permit it. We have modern kitchens now so we no longer need a fire in the open hearth with a black cauldron hanging over it; a saucepan and a hob will do. Things have changed, and the beauty of the craft is that it allows these changes to happen, and it embraces and accepts them.

Mint

Herbs: Rosemary: Burn a small amount of dried rosemary to cleanse and clear an area of negative influences, or to keep a pouch under your pillow for a revealing dream, perhaps to see whom your future loved one will be. Sage: Longevity is gained in any area by adding a pinch of sage to your spell. Burning dried sage and allowing the smoke to pass over your crystals will cleanse them of all previous energies.

Mint: If you’re nervous about travelling, drink a cup of mint tea 2 hours before leaving and arrive happy at your destination. Place a sprig of fresh mint, or a pouch of it dried into your mode of transport for protection on journeys.

Thyme: Healing for loved ones and inner courage can be obtained from the use of this herb. Mix it into a meal before you go for a job interview and visualise yourself succeeding.

Dill: Is used for good luck in love and to find lost passion that may need wakening. A romantic meal for two can be as magical as any spell, so cook with dill when you need to light the fires of passion. Camomile: If you’re suffering with any type of stress, camomile is the answer - in tea or used directly in magic, it brings a sense of calm and serenity to problems that are tasking you.

Dill

Nutmeg: General prosperity is yours to gain from a little nutmeg. Place a pouch of it into your purse or wallet and see how your money grows. Cinnamon: A good dose brings success and is a great aid in psychic awareness. Make a brew with cinnamon to help you connect with the spirit world. Some witches recommend that you keep herbs for magical use separate from those you cook with – though I believe it’s really just a matter of personal preference. The main thing is that you enjoy mixing and making potions in your magical kitchen!

ere are a few techniques you can try to heal with your crystals, and then you may want to come up with your own variations. Play some relaxing music in the background. Sit in a comfortable chair – you may need a blanket or rug (it is hard to relax if you feel cold), or perhaps a pair of socks. Set aside a quiet time when you will not be disturbed – a time where you can fall asleep if you want too. Have a glass of water handy for afterwards. Choose a crystal by following the customary properties or just pick a crystal from your collection. A nice way to choose your crystal is to line a few up on a table and hold your hand just over the top to ‘feel’ for the energy of your crystal. You

might notice the subtle differences between one crystal and the next. Does it feel colder or warmer than the others? Does your hand start to tingle when you hold your hand over one particular crystal? Maybe your crystal appears to really stand out from all the others on the table. Follow your inner guidance and trust that this is the crystal you should be using today. Sometimes, we forget what it’s like to sit and relax. By using crystals we are taking relaxation to another level. If you choose to play relaxing music at the same time as using crystal healing, you can almost put yourself into a light trance – this is fine! Remember to give yourself plenty of time to ‘come to’

afterwards. To make you feel more grounded afterwards, have a cup of tea, eat a small snack, or maybe walk around a little. You will most likely feel peaceful and relaxed, as if you’ve just woken up from a deep sleep – don’t rush out for a drive until you’ve had time to wake up properly first! It is useful to keep a record of the crystals you have used (and the results you have achieved), in a small notebook – it’s a good way to learn! Check back from time to time to see if the same stones work in the same way every time. Tumbled stones are available in many shops now for just a few pence why not treat yourself to a selection of crystals and have a go? Own the power!

Jacky Newcomb finishes her series on crystal healing with her guide to healing with your stones.

Seven colour chakra healing

Using the Eastern principle that we have an energy body as well as a physical body, yogis describe how we have seven main chakras (energy centres) along the length of the body. Although there is some variation in the colours that people see – each chakra has a colour associated with it. Some people visualise these chakras as spinning lotus flowers. You can place the correct coloured stone on, or close to your body at each given chakra. If you feel that another crystal would work better in each position, then use that. Follow your inner guidance, and move naturally and quickly in selecting your stones. Clear quartz can be used to replace any of the stones in the table below left.

Instinctive healing

Select a small group of crystals and place them wherever you feel you need them. Don’t think too hard about where you are placing your stones or why. You may use several stones in one position and none in others. Just trust that you know what you are doing! Work with your crystals until you feel it is time to stop – this might be a couple of minutes or half an hour or so. Stop when you are ready.

any men would not set foot inside a beauty parlour. But the Elemis flagship spa in our nation’s capital is so much more than that. Well hidden in London’s exclusive Mayfair district, it is an oasis. Despite the hustle and bustle of the city outside, there is nothing to be found but peace and tranquillity through its doors. The interior reflects the mood with its tasteful minimalist style in rich earthy colours, together with twinkling candlelight in every corner. After the routine health questionnaire, I was escorted up to one of the three themed suites: Thai; Balinese and Moorish. The Thai Suite that I frequented was a sight to behold with wooden wicker furniture and a canopied skylight – like entering another country. The therapists are discreet and after a train journey of over three hours, I was ready for some pampering. The session started with a Hot Lime Touch over the feet to cleanse and soothe, which also acts as an introduction. Then my body was brushed to warm the skin and improve the circulation, followed by some breathing exercises to help calm me down and prepare my body for massage. Then it was time for the Deep Tissue Muscle Massage. Specific oils are selected to suit each individual’s needs – a mixture of maritime pine, rosemary and ylang ylang were chosen for me to ease the tension out of my back and shoulders. The massage itself started on the back to relieve tension. Work continued on the back of my legs in upward motions, quite a lot of the treatment was concentrated on the back as that is where all the large muscles are. The treatment itself was pleasant and relaxing, the only uncomfortable instance was when the few knots I had in my shoulder were released. Work on the front of the body was brief

compared to the back and it concentrated mainly on the legs - stretching actions were used as as the final part of the treatment. Personally, I found this to be the most enjoyable part as my legs where wobbly after train travel and walking around London - so the release of tension was quite welcome. Most of the treatment was carried out using the palms of the hands, but with the thighs and the shoulders, the masseur used her forearms and sometimes the elbows. Apparently an amazing 40% of the spa’s customers are men and they enjoy a wide range of treatments including seaweed body wraps, facials, detox therapies as well as massages. There are even regulars who visit every month to relax and unwind from a busy, hectic London lifestyle. After a mango smoothy and a pleasant goodbye, I left the spa feeling like a new man – I can see why it’s so popular. So come on guys – don’t leave it purely for the girls to enjoy – get in on the action!

A Deep Tissue Muscle Massage at the Elemis day-spa, 2-3 Lancashire Court, London, costs £80. Treatments are available nationwide from £40. Call 01278 727830 to find the nearest salon/spa which offers Elemis therapies. For more details visit www.elemis.com

magine a world without light, without colour – how would that feel? There is now a way to directly experience the healing effects of more light and colour in your life. Colour Light Therapy (CLT) is a holistic therapy which uses coloured light to heal a wide range of physical and emotional problems as well as promoting personal and spiritual transformation. CLT is a gentle, non-invasive technique that is simple, yet profoundly effective and it is easy to learn for home use or in a professional setting. A slim torch is used to give a narrow beam of light in eleven different colours selected in a specific sequence according to the treatment. The light is applied directly on to the skin on acupuncture and other points, and travels along energy meridians to reach deep into the cells. Scientific research has shown that the cells in the body communicate with each other via the medium of light in a phenomenon known as bioluminescence. During a CLT treatment the cells receive the right colour of light needed for them to resonate at their natural frequency. Any imbalances in the cells are thus corrected and they release whatever was causing the disharmony. This could mean pain relief, elimination of physical toxins, releasing pent-up emotions, clearing a trauma held as a ‘body memory’ or loosening of energy blocks. Sometimes a memory from childhood, or even past lives, is accessed by the light and then a technique called dialoguing is used to help the client bring consciousness to the situation and so bring healing and resolution in the present. A set of seven spectral colours are used to heal imbalances on the physical level. However, if the source of imbalance is non-physical, then a further set of four soul-spirit colours can be used. For example, if a person has lost touch with their soul purpose or is confused about their path in life then treatments with soul-spirit colours can bring new

awareness and spiritual balance. Peter Mandel, a German naturopath, created Colourpuncture in the 1970s. Sarita Newman integrated Colourpuncture treatments with dialoguing, emotional release, hypnosis, meditation and dreamwork to form the holistic method of Colour Light Therapy which she brought to the UK in 1999. The one-year CLT practitioner training is now led by Charaka Satyam and is for those who wish to practice professionally. Three-day introductory courses are also offered and these courses are for those who wish to take care of themselves and their families at home. For example, treatments to strengthen the immune system, balance hormones and relieve PMT, detoxify and de-stress, alleviate pain and treat cold symptoms are included. In the practitioner training, more in-depth treatments are taught often involving a specific series of sessions. The Pre-natal series cleanses trauma from the time of conception, in the womb and birth. This series can help addictive tendencies, insecurity issues, or

is good if the birth has been difficult. It is very beneficial for children. The Male/Female Balance series helps to release negative imprints from your parents, thus helping you to discover your own unique truth. It is also very helpful for relationships where the same problems repeat over and over. There are advanced series available, such as Holographic Healing, which aims to clear patterns of inner conflict and is recommended for cancer and other degenerative diseases. The Transmitter Relay series is designed to bring about transformation to many areas of life at once. It uses soul-spirit colours for clearing karmic trauma from past lives and helps you to tap into your hidden potential and rediscover your light essence. However, much healing is also possible with one-off treatments and sessions are tailored to the person’s unique needs. The practitioner will take a detailed case history before deciding on an appropriate treatment. Clients often describe feeling ‘lighter’ after a session. Colour Light Therapy really can light up your life!

CLT case studies: Simon, 28, a musician, was shy, reclusive and felt stuck in a rut. He suffered from bad eczema and was unable to work. He received nine sessions of the Pre-natal series and went through a profound healing process, releasing much anger, grief and pain. At the end of the sessions he said that his old ‘self’ had died and he felt ‘reborn’. His eczema improved, he was able to make new friends and get a job. He began a new life in a different part of the country and followed his dream of recording and performing his own music. Rose, a retired nurse in her sixties, had bad asthma and low self-confidence. She also suffered from Seasonal Affective Disorder and would get quite depressed during the dark winter season. Although she didn’t have an in-depth series, she had various different hormonal and immune treatments every few weeks. A year later she was quite transformed. She is more assertive and has tried new activities. Rose’s asthma was much better and she reported feeling happy, well and contented and she had made it through the winter without being down at all. Anne, 37, an accountant, felt she was getting a bad flu bug that many of her office colleagues had succumbed to. Once home, she had treatments for flu prevention and lymph flow and was able to go to work the next day.

nimals are intelligent and sentient beings. I am often asked whether it is possible for animals to be sentient beings, which means having the power of perception by the senses. Of course they are, and there are scientific studies to prove this. Animals have a consciousness with individual feelings, emotions and thoughts, they also possess a very powerful telepathic sense. Emotional, mental and physical well-being too are all influenced by the world about the animal, and there are both good and bad factors caused through upbringing, training, hereditary factors, food, and climate. One major factor that is too frequently overlooked when considering problems with pets is the influence of the humans in their lives. By this I do not mean how they talk or interact with them - but the unseen energy radiating from people. Every living being consists of a continuously vibrating soup of complex energy and when we are in proximity to anything living there is an overlapping and blending of energies. This is called shared energy. Through this flows information from the mind/body/soul levels, and gives a readout of positive or negative states in the animal or human at any given time. It is very important to realise that through our energy states we can

56 Vision 2

reflect our problems onto pets, and then they can magnify this energy reflecting it back to us, and so on. The bigger the animal the larger the magnification, hence in horses there can be a real mirroring effect ending with both rider and horse suffering from similar ailments or symptoms. Chaotic energy radiating from a human can trigger mental and physical health problems in animals and this is something that I have come across on numerous occasions. It is also why I am frequently asked by holistic vets to work with an owner and pet, as through

done and medication prescribed but the vet thought that something deeper was triggering all of these symptoms. After I had spent some time with the owner and delved into the family life I found that there was a lot of strife in the household. A teenage son had a drug and related skin problem, the husband and wife were at loggerheads over him and the wife was consequently suffering from panic attacks and nausea. The dog had no choice but to be in the middle of all this chaotic energy and absorb it, and it made him ill too. When I pointed this out the family made some changes and

“When we are in proximity to anything living there is an overlapping of energies.”

healing I am able to help clear the confused and disturbed energy state bouncing to and fro between them. There is nothing in the orthodox medicine bag which can work in this way, although veterinary homeopathy can also be used provided that both human and animal are given remedies to take alongside each other. Whenever our pets have a health or behavioural problem we should, as well as seek veterinary advice, ask ourselves what is happening on our own mind/body/spirit levels that we need to address. Jack, a four-year-old labrador, began to suffer with skin eruptions and finally vomiting. Extensive vet tests were

improvements to their situation and within a short space of time the dog’s health improved greatly. If we are grieving this emotional energy state can affect our pets and we should make sure that in this situation we do as much as possible to lift our mood play. Things which can help both humans and pets in the home is playing soothing music, vases of fresh flowers, letting lots of light in, using essential oils in a vaporiser, and of course healing. Animals are energy sponges and are so generous in their unconditional love for us that they do sometimes try to help by taking away the worst of the energy in our body caused by an illness

or a disease. A client of mine was diagnosed with breast cancer and was naturally devastated. The week after an operation she cuddled her cat and felt a small lump underneath the tummy. After the vet operated the woman couldn’t believe it when the biopsy diagnosed cancer in the mammary glands, a very rare cancer in a cat, and always fatal. This much-loved pet had been absorbing the destructive energy from the woman’s tumour to save her life. With weekly healing the cat had a year of pain free and good quality life before the cancer showed up somewhere else and she was put to sleep. The woman around the same time was given the all clear. That special cat showed just how powerfully animals can love, help and heal us. Margrit Coates is a registered healer and partner in a clinic offering natural therapies for animals. arch is the month of fertility and growth for witches and a time to plant the seeds of change. March 21st sees one of the eight yearly festivals - Ostara or Easter. This is the spring equinox when the day and night are of equal lengths. It’s a time to balance things out and do your spring cleaning. Although this may seem a little old-fashioned to some, you can spring clean far more than just your home. Perhaps you want to have your ideas heard at work, or you feel that you always stand behind your friends and never have your say? Now is the time to balance this out. You aren’t going to break the scales, just even them out a little.

Georgia

You’ll need several stones, a piece of paper and an envelope. Your stones should be as flat as possible and large enough to write on. Write on each of the stones one of the things that if released, would improve your life. On your paper, write a positive outcome for each thing you have decided to release. Place the paper in the envelope and take it with your stones to open ground or a stream where you’ll be able to throw the stones away without harming anyone or the environment. When you’re in the place of your choosing, hold your envelope in your dominant hand and your stones in the other. You’re now going to banish the things that make your life feel unbalanced. Before you throw each stone, you need to say a few words. For example: Release me from this burden, I now can let you go, And with my words on paper, My inner strength will grow. Do this as you throw each stone, and feel all of the empty energy leaving with them and a burning fire filling your envelope with the positive energy that you need to fulfil your goals. Tip Keep your envelope safe and in a year’s time, open it and you’ll be amazed at all of the positive changes that you’ve brought about.

Ask Georgia

Dear Georgia: My love life is a bit up in the air at the moment and I’m lacking self-esteem. I want to think that I’m attractive and likeable but I’ve taken some knocks that have damaged this way of thinking. Do you know any spells that I can use to give my self-confidence a kick start, so that I can believe in myself again? Sophie, Shipley. Georgia says: Sometimes I ask myself, ‘What is beauty? Who is or isn’t attractive? Who made the rules that govern what we perceive to be perfect’? The answer is simple, we do. You’re in a place at the moment where you feel that others don’t see you as any of the above. To move that negative thought energy away from yourself and to remind you just how attractive you are, you’ll need a mirror and a full moon. Sit in a place where the moon lights your face and look into your mirror. See just how perfect you are. No-one else sees us more than we see ourselves. Take your time, look at your eyes, nose, ears and your mouth and see how they make up who you are. See that there is nothing to change, you were made perfect. Now feel yourself filling with the confidence of this belief and feel your self-love return. Recite these words when you’re ready: The moon that sees me on this night, And warms my beauty with its light, I am who I am made perfectly, In the eyes of the world so now let it be.

I know that you are a wonderful, confident and caring person and I trust now that you can see it for yourself. TIP If you want to, you can do this ritual every full moon and feel your confidence grow.

Who Wears the Trousers?

I hadn’t worked for nearly 3 years as I have been bringing up my daughter, but when she started playschool I thought that it was time to get back into the swing of things. I applied for several jobs and was lucky enough to get one at my local library working part-time - exactly what I wanted. The problem was I hadn’t been out of the house much and had lost all my social skills. As the day arrived to start I became more and more afraid that people wouldn’t like me and that I wasn’t going to settle in. I decided to find a crystal that would give me strength and make me feel brave. I looked in several books, on the internet and in the end I decided to go with bloodstone known as the stone of courage. I found a lovely star-shaped pendant and decided to cleanse it on a full moon and ask it for help during my first day. I set off with my bloodstone star pendant around my neck, ready to face whatever was to come. As I entered I was welcomed by a smiling face and the comment “What a lovely necklace, what is it”. I was very pleased. I relaxed instantly and I am now very happy - my courage and confidence are returning more every day. Verony, Wales. Georgia says: An excellent choice of crystal - I’m pleased it’s worked out so well for you. Going back to work after a long period can be very daunting for anyone. Other crystals that promote courage include amethyst, carnelian, hematite, tiger’s eye and aventurine. Tips When buying a crystal for a specific purpose, try to place the crystal as close as possible to the relevant centre of energy to get the full affect. Tell us how spells have changed your life and each month the Prize Spell wins a personalised spell kit from For The Witch In You to the value of £49.95. Visit www.forthewitchinyou.co.uk for more details.

Dear Georgia: My wife seems to wear the trousers in our house. I always end up giving in for an easy life. Is there anything I can do to help me stick up for myself more? Lee, Wakefield. Georgia says: This is a month of balance and I feel that this is exactly what you’re looking for. Sometimes people who feel that they’re not being listened to or don’t want to have a hard time, haven’t told their partner exactly how they feel and made sure that they’ve been heard. So their partner carries on oblivious of the damage they’re causing. So I have to say that what you need is the ability to sit down with your wife and talk to her, tell her how you feel powerless and give it time for things to change. I’ve always found that the crystal turquoise, when placed about the throat works exceptionally well when there is a need to speak clearly and with confidence. Try and get a pendant which has a stone that physically touches your skin near your throat and speak your mind - but remember that this may all be new for your wife, so please be gentle. Tip When buying crystals for a specific purpose - try to get a piece that touches your skin so you can benefit from its full power.

The witches’ kitchen

Each month we’ll bring you tips on herbs and their magical healing properties for you to build up your own witches’ kitchen.

Juniper

Juniper berries, if dried, can be made into a bracelet and worn by one looking for love. A bunch hung above a door is an excellent form of protection against theft. Keep a pouch in your car to protect against accidents. Used by many as a natural antiseptic, the juniper berry relieves joint and muscle pain.

ince the dawn of time, humans have looked to the skies for guidance. The sun, the moon and the stars have constantly been seen as both spiritual companions and a source of help in troubled times. Since the beginning of the Christian era, astrology has taken something of a back seat in the British Isles. Nevertheless – and despite the fact that the early Christians were not averse to looking to the stars for guidance – those whom are generally referred to as pagans continued to practice astrology as part of their everyday life, alongside a multitude of others who take a passive interest in the subject. The word ‘pagan’ is derived from the Latin pagani, which roughly translates as ‘country’. Pagans were generally seen as country-folk or nature worshippers, less sophisticated than their town or city-dwelling counterparts. Actually, we have the pagans to thank for keeping the British astrological torch burning when many would have been happy to see it extinguished. One of the difficulties in quantifying British astrological lore is that our nation has been subject to many cultural influences over the centuries: the Saxons; the Romans; the Vikings and the Normans to name but a few. However, careful analysis can help us put together a reasonably accurate picture of how the British peoples have practiced astrology in these isles. There is still debate about when the British Isles were first inhabited, but there can be little doubt that the first settlers brought with them astrological beliefs that had their origins way back in ancient Mesopotamia, Sumer and other early civilisations.

60 Vision 2

Early British astrology seems to have followed the traditional pattern of dividing the sky into ‘houses’, each one containing its own constellations and having its own influences. The Sumerians used 12 signs of the zodiac in addition to 36 constellations, which made a total of 48. This is broadly similar to the system used by the ancient Britons, and one of the reasons we know that the ancient Sumerians almost certainly had an influence on British astrology, although the ancient inhabitants of Britain utilised 9 Solar Houses and 13 Lunar Houses. The Sumerians also used the five known planets alongside the sun and the moon to set the number of days in the week – just as we do today. And, just as the Sumerians observed the skies from their ziggurats, ancient Britons used impressive observatories like Stonehenge for the same purpose. Stonehenge, which sits stolidly on Salisbury Plain, comprises of 30 upright stones known as sarsens. The average weight of these stones exceeds 25 tons. The sarsens were topped with 30 horizontal lintel stones which formed a perfect circle ten feet from the ground. Other stones look on in attendance. At the solstices and equinoxes the rays of the sun shine perfectly between the stones. Some have suggested that this is coincidence on the basis that, when Stonehenge was created, the sun would have risen and set in a different position.

However, as we don’t know exactly when the henge took its present form, we cannot say with any certainty that the stones didn’t line up exactly then as they do now. Other researchers have pointed out subtle alignments with the constellations, the movement of the moon and so on. For example, there is a rectangle formed by four ‘Station Stones’ that displays a perfect alignment to the eight fixed points of the moon cycle, which lasts precisely 18.6 years. Coincidence? I think not. There can be little doubt that Stonehenge, and smaller circles like those at Castlerigg (pictured), served as both astronomical and astrological observatories even if this was not their main purpose. Generally, the ancient Mesopotamians are credited with developing the ‘Western’ system of astrology that we use today, although it has been subject to changes. However, the greatest influence of all seems to have come from the later druidic religion which has survived in this country for a long time. The Lunar Zodiac was taken very seriously by the druids. Each month was associated with a tree. However, as the druids were a solar priesthood, it was the nine Solar Houses (or Gilgals) that were given crucial importance. Another difficulty in uncovering the detail of ancient British astrological lore centres around the fact that some believers – particularly the druids – were averse to

writing things down and far preferred to pass on teachings orally. Due to the loss of many of these oral traditions, the exact nature of early British astrology is now lost to us. We live in trying and unsettled times. Wars abound, the earth is in political turmoil and the moral fabric of civilisation is breaking down. People want certainty, but are cast into a sea of change. They want foreknowledge, but the only surety in their lives is the bitter clarity of past mistakes. They want

permanence, but are only gifted with transience. No wonder the eternal movement of the stars has such power over minds and hearts. However, many of us have forgotten even this. Fortunately, modern pagans from other, similar paths are preserving what we do know. Celtic astrology is being reinvented. It may not be resurrected in exactly the same form, but it will no doubt be a blessing to those who, whatever befalls them, can gain hope and renewal by looking at the stars above.

he dawning of the new age of Aquarius was much heralded and overblown in the latter part of the 20th century and this heralded the astrological cliché - “when the moon is in the 7th house and Jupiter aligns with Mars, we’d all better run for cover ‘cos it’s the end of the world!” With the advent of the 21st century we might want to take a more sober and circumspect glance at the heavens, focusing particularly on the month of March 2005 in which there are one or two interesting alignments and oppositions. Mars is in something of a negative position relative to Cancer (and has been for the past few weeks, therefore suggesting storms involving water which may well have something to do with the dreadful events in the Indian Ocean) and which on a more parochial level could explain some of the clashes of wills and arguments that poor old Cancerians have been having to deal with of late. This doesn’t let up so both Cancerians (which are water signs) and Arians (who are governed by the planet Mars) may well find themselves well and truly in the thick of it. On the other hand the planet Venus is in a sympathetic trine with Jupiter and the constellation of Gemini and therefore all aspects of global communication are well starred here, perhaps having some influence in the way that the rest of the world has responded to the Tsunami, and opening the way for some new breakthroughs in all aspects of global confrontation. People like Taureans who are governed by the planet Venus should now be able to enjoy a deeper and more meaningful level of communication with both business partners and romantic partners while Gemini born folk should find themselves in the roles of peace-maker and go-between....

March forecast

M

y old grandmother frequently said that “pride comes before a fall” but she also said that “there are times when you’ve got to stick up for whatever you think is right for you”! The early part of March is such a time in your life, and while I am convinced that you will acquit yourself very well, you’ll spend the last two weeks or ten days of the month wondering whether or not you’ve done the right thing. Please don’t be tempted to backtrack even if there is some subtle and not so subtle pressure put upon you by other people to do exactly that! Some tension within family circles comes to the surface between the 17th and 21st Vision(and Astrology Ad2 keep 26/1/05 10:55and am will probably on rumbling grumbling throughout the year).

Inevitably it will have something to do with family loyalties clashing with the need of a greater degree of personal freedom. It’s a complicated situation, but before you can find the compromise of the middle pathway, you’re going to have to go out on a limb and be a bit extreme – if only to get other people’s attention. Cash & career: March will be a progressive and productive month for all career and business aspects purely because this is something you are going to be concentrating a lot more of your attention on. Some key (although perhaps difficult) decisions made in February will now be Page proven1 wise, which gives you your mandate to carry on doing just what

you’re doing. A travel opportunity crops up around the very end of the month. Normally you wouldn’t give it a second thought, but these are not normal times. North? South? East? West? I’d put the astrologer’s money on the East! Any kind of artistic endeavour or pursuit could add a few coins to your coffers, but more importantly, bring a feeling of creative achievement which is absolutely priceless. A little bit of praise from third parties won’t do you any harm either, but it is how you are feeling about yourself that carries the greater clout. Relationships: This is probably not the most romantic month in the Piscean year, but an important one nevertheless for reassessing the value and direction of relationships and for examining your own needs and desires. There is a period between the 18th and the 22nd when you will be looking back over your shoulder and reviewing the last few years of your history (some of you particularly honing in on a period of great relevance approximately eight years ago) and coming to the conclusion that you deserve a wee bit more out of your emotional and romantic future than you’ve had out of your past. It is with these thoughts in mind that you will now begin to make a concerted effort to change the shape and direction of at least one key relationship as well as your own emotional priorities. You will not always meet with total co-operation in this quest, but as the quest is valid you really must persevere, exercise patience and determination and take the long-term view. Others will come round to your way of thinking, although perhaps not all at once, and not without you having to do something a little bit Draconian to make your point.

arch will be a much brighter month across the board! Maybe it has something to do with Spring being just around the corner, but I suspect that it has more to do with your own personal frame of mind. January and February have not been easy, but now there is a feeling of a fresh start and new beginnings which touch just about every aspect of your life. There should be an opportunity around the 3rd or 4th to meet up with an old friend and providing this is just an old friend there should be no problem. Jealousy is an emotion that we all feel from time to time, Arians less so than others… but here’s the thing - without always knowing that they’re doing it, Arians have a tendency to create and generate great jealousy within other people, and when something does hit the fan, Arians are always surprised because they didn’t see it coming. hile it’s true that the lighter nights should be lifting your spirits, there is a lot of confusing stuff going on in your head that needs to be sorted out – if only you had the time! And time is a major issue in March! You’ll need to be in more than two places at once, the phone won’t stop ringing, and it looks like Vision Astrology Ad2 26/1/05there 10:55 am are lots of commuter

Stress is a major threat to us all these days, but it is a thing which Taureans in particular do not deal with awfully well. than just trying to combat the symptoms. Cash & career: The positive cash trends of February carry on over into March and financial aspects seem to improve quite significantly. Somewhere around the middle of the month (an educated guess would suggest the 13th to the 17th) there will be an extremely important meeting/conversation or interview that will have a profound effect on the direction of your working life for the next few years. So have a pretty good idea of what you want before you go opening your mouth and putting your foot in it again. Taureans have a lot of pride, and without doubt there are times in one’s life when a stand has to be made on matters of pride and principle… but as my old grandma used to say, don’t let your pride get in the way of your common sense or you could soon feel the freezing cold draft of poverty fumbling its way through empty pockets. Relationships: Even the most stable and loving of relationships will be touched by a mood of restlessness, particularly during the last seven or eight days of the month. Some old resentment may creep to the surface as, once again, you are being told by others what you can and can’t do. And, if you’ll pardon the obvious pun, telling a Taurean what they can’t do is like waving a red rag at an angry bull! Rather than doing your bull in a china shop thing, calm down, relax and try to become a little more patient and philosophical. This seems to be very sound advice right the way throughout March, but maybe for the very last week in particular. Mature unions should hold their own in the face of some adversity but youthful and casual relationships are touched much more deeply by this trend, and therefore any opportunity to find something lighter, better and brighter with someone else could be seen as a great relief – or a flaming great danger! You might feel the need to be discreet, but then, by sod’s law, you’ll get accused of being secretive. Sometimes even the sweetest little bulls just can’t win!

GEMINI

22 May - 21 June

March forecast

E

xtravagance and confidence sometimes happily go hand in hand, and so it is for the vast majority of Geminis throughout March. To be sure, you’re likely to come in for an unwarranted degree of criticism from some who haven’t got the balls to do half the things you’re trying to do - the envy factor creeps in. They can’t do it, so why should you? Take some advice from an old pro, and treat this attitude (which may well come from partners and lovers as well as possessive mothers and rather strange fathers) with the disdain that it deserves. At the beginning of the month you’ll try to do this politely and diplomatically, but by the middle of the month you’ll realize you’re getting nowhere fast and will be rather more direct and blunt. Inevitably this will lead to some unwelcome family tensions, and there isn’t much you can do about it other than take solace from the fact that you yourself are not the cause of them. Cinderellas among you with ugly sisters may well have their work cut out in a major way! stretching back half a decade) a little bit of peace and tranquillity will do you no harm at all! You need time out to do some serious thinking (a) about who you are and (b) about what it is you really want and need to give your life a deeper sense of purpose. The answers to these questions can be found, but not in a clamour of noise and distraction, only in the silence of some inner peace and calm. This is an area in which some new age philosophies and disciplines could be worth their weight in gold and if you find yourself being drawn towards subjects like meditation and/or yoga don’t resist – just go with the flow – and you Page should1start feeling better for it pretty quickly.

beginning of the month (the 2nd or 3rd) someone is going to take a decision out of your hands and some weight of responsibility off your shoulders! Rather than feeling miffed (you’ll probably be furious!) take a deep breath, relax and offer a prayer of thanks to the Good Lord for giving a much-needed break and breathing space. Look carefully around you. Colleagues are working with you or for you because they value your input and they acknowledge your abilities, even if you are an absolute sod to work with sometimes. You are someone who needs a lot of reassurance – who needs to feel valued, and who does NOT like to feel that they are being taken for granted in any way. So use the old rule… to get what you want, give it out first, and then wait ‘till it comes back to you. As it inevitably will. Relationships: Now there should be some notable improvement in your love life this month and if a loved one or proven friend is giving you some very quiet and serious advice (6th/7th/8th) then you’d be foolish not to consider what is being said. Someone is well able to show you how much they love you, but this needs to be seen and acknowledged and not taken for granted. Some division of loyalties between parents and younger people will crop up around the 15th and if you happen to be the parent, just remember, you can’t make your kids happy if you are fundamentally unhappy yourself. You’re being shown a pathway here, but have you got the courage to take it? There is someone who desperately wants a lot more private time with you and who longs for a greater degree of intimacy, but to benefit from this very positive energy (a) you’ve got to say yes and then (b) you’ve got to find the quality time to actually ‘do’ yes.

There should be lots of flattery in the wind, all heading in your direction, and you’d be less than human if you didn’t respond to it in some way. Question is, how much will this affect your judgement? If someone is telling you what a great guy you are, are you going to believe them or are you going to look for ulterior motives? There are certainly some new and exciting people coming into your social circle (big party on the 11th or 12th?) but not everyone will approve of some of your new-found friends. interests, it is the younger members of the sign who get caught up in this ebullient atmosphere, and there is a strong learning curve here that speaks well for exam results, driving tests and rites of passage initiations. Certificates, qualifications, professional accolades these things are all on the cards, but make no mistake, they’re not being given away for free. These are things you will have worked very hard to obtain, and therefore you should be feeling (and enjoying) a profound sense of self satisfaction as targets are hit and goals are scored. On the subject of goals, this should be a good month for anyone involved in team sports and there is an energy here that pushes the amateur towards professional status. of careers, and therefore the acquisition of new job skills looks highly likely for some, while for others the challenge may be to learn how to lead and take on extra responsibility. An opportunity arises on or around the 16th that will push you into the limelight, and although your palms may be sweating and your knees knocking, just dance to the music and accept the thundering round of applause that comes afterwards. Virgos don’t always make the most natural actors and actresses, but it is a technique that anyone can learn, and although you may be cock-a-hoop with private delight, try to keep a modest look on your face. Relationships: Light-hearted relationships will become a lot more intense over the next few weeks, and while some of you might revel in this aspect of security and commitment, others might feel a little trapped and claustrophobic. A good thing to do here (although not always easy) is to talk to a partner openly about your feelings, needs and expectations, and as long as you’re honest and speak in a gentle voice, you should end up getting 98% of what you’re looking for. Older, more mature members of the sign will know what they want, and as such, they will have fewer problems than their younger compatriots, who are still feeling their way along the road with all of its slippery slopes. The 19th of March is (or will become) a significant date for romantic commitments and anniversaries. Also, may I draw your attention to the 27th of March which could turn out to be quite a momentous day, not for you directly, but for two people very closely connected to you. They may be having a ball, but you’re the one who’s swinging the bat.

True, other people close to you could be more than just a little put out when you choose not to follow their advice or their leadership, but I promise you, that by following your own agenda, using your own instincts and intuition, you’ll stay well ahead in the game, and perhaps it falls to other 10:55 am Page people1 to follow your lead for a change. arises on the 8th or 9th at which time there will be a distinct challenge and choice; do you do what somebody else wants you to do or do you do what you want to do? You’ll know what’s right and wrong, but will need the courage of your convictions to do the right thing – which is to follow your own lead all the way down the line. Cash & career: I won’t say that there’s open warfare on the work scene, but there are some very unhappy people around you – they’re not unhappy with you, you must understand, but they will be expecting you to take sides in some very serious office politics. Now, if you feel you’ve got some major principles to fight for - get on with the fight – but if not, just keep your head down while others slog it out around you. Great job – just a shame about some of your colleagues! And on that subject, be very mindful and circumspect about who you can and who you can’t trust. Between the 17th and the 24th someone who offers you the hand of friendship is likely to kick you in the clangers the moment it suits their purpose to get ahead. All is fair in work and war, so be on your guard. Relationships: Something of a personal nature that you’ve had going with a work mate or colleague may now have to end, and even if there are a few tears, there should also be a profound sense of relief. Balanced against this there will be some tension in your domestic environment while you get your emotional head straight and learn how to paint the right smile on your face. Not much of a problem with the frequency of sex, but as your mind might be elsewhere there may well be a problem with the quality. Remember the old joke about the ceiling needing to be painted? Be particularly on your guard and watch your tongue between the 21st and the 24th – if someone is asking you too many awkward questions, in a moment of frustration you might just end up telling them the truth, and then kiddo, we can all sit back and watch rubbish hit the fan!

Disturbed sleep patterns may become something of a problem at this time and you should take this as a body warning sign. In a purely physical sense, watch your back and take care of your throat – and following this line of thought, be prepared to spend a little extra money on private health care. The middle to the end of the month will be a fraught period with strangers or unexpected guests trampling through your home, and as this is a favourable period for property investment, it may well be that you’re installing new loos or sticking on extensions or conservatories. On the other hand, if you’re living in a bed-sit, maybe you’re just buying a new seat. 22 Dec - 20 Jan talking of domestic upheaval and not emotional upheaval. Cash & career: Amid the hustle and bustle of your everyday routines, there is a period mid-month when you will have to halt, pause and take a long-term view of your career direction and business prospects. An important meeting or conference with business partners and colleagues (any time between the 8th and 16th) will give you a much clearer indication of which way the wind is blowing over the next 18 or 24 months, which should give you the required breathing space to plan and consider your more long-term aims and objectives. Although it is not a position that you would choose for yourself, you will find yourself in the role of peacemaker or go-between when two people close to you are diametrically opposed in many of their beliefs and opinions. Inevitably there must be some divided loyalties here, and it will not be easy for you to take sides, seeing as you will see both sides of an argument. All you can do is act as mediator and hope that other folk around you see some common sense and compromise. Relationships: Unexpectedly there is a sense of freshness and renewal bursting into the Capricorn life pattern over the next few weeks. Existing relationships find a greater sparkle of spontaneity, and single unattached Capricorns are likely to find themselves suddenly and irresistibly attracted to a member of the opposite sex (12th/13th/14th)! So, on the one hand, there is a boost to the Capricorn sex energy and, perhaps, more importantly, there is an equal degree of simple delight burgeoning in a purely romantic way. Earth shattering orgasms share importance with holding hands in the High Street…and indeed the one thing leads to the other (although orgasms in the High Street should be enjoyed with some discretion). A very beautiful love token will be placed in your hands on or immediately around the 19th, important travel plans will be discussed towards the very end of the month which will have a buoyant effect on your overall mood of optimism.

t’s nice to be proven right – especially when there have been a few people around you who have been convinced that you’ve been wrong! Yeah, so let them grovel and enjoy your moment of triumph! Seriously though, if there is some kind of formal apology coming your way, it’s to your advantage to accept it without looking for the extra pound of flesh. From quite early on in the month, the 8th or 9th onwards, you’ll feel much more in control of things and should find yourself on the receiving end of a greater degree of respect and understanding from some of the key people around you. Don’t let all this go to your head, but do capitalise on this positive trend by showing that you are confident in the role of leader and that you are prepared to lead decisively. Other people might grumble a bit, but basically that doesn’t matter as long as they do as they are told – or in this case, what you tell them to do! Now this does not give you permission to behave like Attila The Hun, but providing you are firm and consistent in your expectations you’re not likely to be disappointed by the performance of other people. Cash & career: If you are looking for some kind of promotion this Relationships: March is month then you are likely to get it. Even certainly a better month than January or if you are not looking for promotion a February where key emotional sequence of events falls into place th st relationships are concerned. Travel aspects seem somewhat confused I’d expect there to be criticism and some at this time (who do you know in petty jealousies, but your challenge is to Switzerland, or maybe Scotland?), and ignore this and rise above it. Watch out rd why should you be pondering over train for an unexpected bill around the 23 timetables? Why should a letter from which will inevitably have overseas be suddenly so important? before the month is over! March 22nd could be a dangerous day for making contact with a member of the opposite sex who ruffles your feathers in a major way and starts you thinking along the lines of ‘what if’. This is not a particularly healthy trend and it should be nipped in the bud. If you can’t do that, for whatever reason, you’d be well advised to keep your innermost thoughts and longings very much to yourself at this sensitive time.

In the Light of Meditation: A Guide to Meditation and Spiritual Development by Mike George (O Books £11.99) This is more of a textbook than anything else – but it is a handy introduction to the practice of meditation and also an insight into the spiritual reasoning behind it. Designed to accompany the Foundation Course in Raja Yoga Meditation at the Brahma Kumaris World Spiritual University, this book runs through a series of lessons with an accompanying CD. The relaxation section examines the nature of self, misplaced identities and the concept of soul, and also provides useful exercises that the student can do themselves to aid them in their meditative journey. It also examines different levels of

consciousness, ways to transform old habits and how to empower the intellect. It details the laws of karma: its two dimensions and three categories which govern our actions – as well as how to live a spiritual lifestyle, the four ages of change as far as time is concerned and the tree of life. The CD enables readers to put into practice the lessons on the page. The start of a spiritual journey, the whole package is designed to be digested slowly – they recommend spending at least a week on each individual lesson. Silence is the key thing in these lessons – re-learning to eliminate fear and stress by concentrating on the soul and not the body. An enlightening examination of meditation which extols the mental, physical and spiritual benefits of the practice.

Earth Wisdom by Glennie Kindred (Hay House Publishing £12.99) Printed on recycled paper, this does exactly what it says on the cover – holds what seems to be infinite wisdom about Mother Earth and how to look after her. It combines many belief systems including Celtic traditions from around Britain and Northern Europe. It is also lovely to see publishers like Hay House practising what the author preaches - they have printed the tome on recycled paper. It also contains many little gems of wisdom which sadly seem to have been forgotten in this day and age. Split into two parts, the first part covers the gifts the earth gives us: folklore surrounding the country’s trees and advice on how to respect the planet; and the second part covers the various pagan festivals along with herbal remedies and ceremonies. There is a wealth of information and wisdom including factfiles on various trees; the Ogham; the earth’s sun and moon cycles; ley lines; spirit paths & dragon paths; tree spirits; herbs; stone circles; dolmen; tunnel mounds and vision quests. There is even an appendix specifically designed so that readers can continue the cycle – names and addresses of organisations which will provide inspirational further reading as well as environmentally friendly organisations. This tome provides an invaluable reference as well as precious advice on how to care for our planet – food for thought which is to be enjoyed and digested slowly.

The Unbelievable Truth by Gordon Smith (Hay House £12.99). This is the second book from the renowned and fast-becoming world-known phenomenon that is Scottish medium Gordon Smith. Following on from his autobiography Spirit Messenger, this is not so much about his life, but his afterlife – or his perception of it from a medium’s stance. Reading such a frank and incredibly honest ‘insider’s view is as mesmerizing as it is revealing. Gordon’s simple yet uncompromising prose is easy to read, understand and refreshing to the eye - this is how books should be written. He explores a wide range of topics from life after death, consciousness and trance mediumship, right through to Out-of-Body Experiences, heaven and hell, and reincarnation. Peppered with lovely anecdotes from his own experience as a medium, Gordon takes the reader on a journey which is challenging to many preconceptions as well as fascinating. He is so honest – he even tells us not to believe everything you are told! Throughout he lists many truths and misconceptions about topics such as the difference between ghosts and spirits, and explains that the notions of heaven and hell are merely conditions formed by us in our human existence – really we are just spirits in human form. Wise words of wisdom indeed.
