Patuxai That Luang A symbol of Laos’s nationhood and the country’s most sacred Buddhist monument, That Luang was built in the 16th century under the rule of King Setthathirat. A symbol of the main stupa appears on the country’s national seal. (Map: K-1)

Patuxai (literally Victory Gate or Gate of Triumph), formerly the Anousavary or Anousavari Monument, is situated in the centre of Vientiane, and was built between 1962 and 1968. (Map: H-2)

Wat Ho Phakeo Built in 1565 as a royal chapel and repository for the celebrated statue of the Emerald Buddha, which the Laotians had seized from Northern Thailand in 1551. The statue remained in the temple until 1778, when the Thais invaded and recaptured it, taking it to Bangkok. The temple was destroyed in 1828-1829 during the Thai sacking of Vientiane; rebuilt in 1936; and restored again in 1993. (Map: G-5)

Mekong Promenade & Night Market Located in the mekong riverfront right in the heart of Vientiane. Visitors can enjoy a pleasant walk the Promenade and a magnificent view of the sunset at twilight. Here, the local folks partake in many exercise activities. You can also find souvernirs, T-shirts, toys, paintings, coconut drinks and many more at the Night Market. Chao Anouvong Park, which is part of the Promenade and where one can sit and relax. Every year, the boat racing festival is also held here right after the end of Buddhist Lent. (Map: E-4)

That Dam Known as the ‘Black Stupa’, many locals believe this mythological structure was once inhabited by a seven-headed dragon (now dormant) that stood to protect the city from the threat of the Siamese. Another tale that does the rounds says that the gold that once graced the surface was taken when the Siamese army ransacked Vientiane back in 1828. (Map: G-4)

Our thanks for the information from www.visit-mekong.com

Wat Sisaket The only temple in Vientiane to survive the sacking of the city by the Siamese in 1828, Wat Sisaket is the oldest and considered by many to be the most interesting of the Laotian temples. (Map: G-4)

Buddha Park (Xieng Khuan) 24km south of Vientiane, Buddha Park is in a field near the Mekong River. The park, as its name would suggest, is littered with religious sculptures and was built in 1958 by the philosopher Bunleua Sulilat who famously combined Buddhist and Hindu philosophy, mythology and iconography. LAOS 2013 WORLD’S BEST TOURIST DESTINATION named

L

aos received the “2013 World’s Best Tourist Destination” award from the European Council on Tourism and Trade (ECTT) at a gala ceremony held at Vientiane’s Don Chan Palace on 9 May, with Minister of Information, Culture and Tourism H.R. Professor Dr Bosengkham Vongdara accepting the prize. In his award presentation, ECTT Chairman Professor Dr Anton Caragea stated the council considered more that 40 countries, and emphasized the winner had to prove its tourism industry and policies are sustainable. “Lao tourism embodies this idea,” Prof Caragea said, while pointing out that Laos is still a new destination to discover. He added tourists are encouraged to travel freely throughout the country, and take part in all the adventures. He stressed, “Tourism isn’t about materialism, but about sharing cultures…Today, Laos has become a great cultural destination,” adding, “It’s a true culture with real values.” Laos’ ability to present an enlightening experience also played a role in ECTT’s choice. Prof Caragea credited the nation for providing an “open-air museum”, due to the preservation of its culture and historical sites. Also affecting Laos’ selection is its dedication to promoting community-based tourism (CBT) as a way to fairly share income among villagers, while presenting Lao handicrafts to the world. “Community-based tourism is a duty as it benefits everyone,” Prof Caragea said, concluding, “An investment in Lao tourism is an investment in Laos’ future.” Prof Caragea then presented the award to Prof Dr Vongdara, who said it “demonstrates the great achievements of tourism development in Laos, (which) offers impressive tourist attractions and services for tourists from across the world… Lao PDR is diverse in languages, cultures, and customs, which have been inherited from our ancestors over thousands of years.”

...Laos is better positioned to present their “open-air museum” to the world. The minister added that the government has been developing the infrastructure, and has placed plenty of focus on building roads to link all the country’s regions as well as connect with neighbouring countries. He pointed out that over the past four-five years, the government has placed great efforts in increasing the number of border checkpoints, which has now reached 23 including four international airports. Prof Dr Vongdara also noted the steady rise in arrivals and revenue over the past 20 years. He cited Laos’ diverse traditions and customs among its multi-ethnic population, and impressive archaeological and historical sites such as Luang Prabang, Vat Phou, the Viengxay Caves, and the Plain of Jars. The nation’s natural beauty and experiencing village life also entered the equation. As for the country’s CBT efforts, Prof Dr Vongdara pointed out that programmes have been established involving 160 villages in all 17 provinces, which has directly generated income for the local people. And with this new award, Laos is better positioned to present their “openair museum” to the world.

‘Phansa’ Begins

encompassing several events from July to October 2013.

By Bernie Rosenbloom

Buddhist Lent (Phansa), one Ton heofthethethree-month Lao calendar’s holiest periods, begins first day of the eighth lunar month

(Khao Phansa), which falls on 22 July this year, and encompasses several celebrations before ending on 19 October (Ok Phansa). Taken as a phrase, Khao Phansa translates into, “remain in one place during the rainy season”, or “rainy season retreat”. Taken separately, Khao refers to “enter”, with Phansa representing a time for spiritual renewal. As such, Khao Phansa falls in mid-rainy season, and marks the day when monks and novices vow to live and station themselves in a single monastery. Khao Phansa is also when young men enter the monkhood for three months of spiritual guidance, and to make merit for themselves and their parents. Buddhists believe that a man who has been a monk represents purity and happiness, and can lead his parents to heaven. Khao Phansa is also the most popular period for ordinations and for men to enter monasteries for short periods before they marry. Many Lao people stop drinking alcohol and some of them become strict vegetarians during Phansa, as they believe these practices show respect for Lord Buddha and are healthy. Still, the country’s nightclubs and bars serve beer and liquor during Buddhist holidays, while other Buddhist countries like Thailand do not. The day before Khao Phansa, Buddhists observe Asalha Puja, which commemorates the day when Buddha preached his first sermon. Buddhists generally celebrate by making merit, listening to a sermon, and joining a night time candlelight procession. During Phansa, monks practice meditation, and on every full-moon day over the Lenten period, they gather in a temple to recite the 227 rules of the monkhood. Meanwhile, novices stay at

the temple to learn Dharma, chant with monks, and do chores such as cleaning the monastery, washing dishes, and assisting senior monks. Monks should not spend the night outside the temple or travel, except for extreme emergencies, and even then, the time away cannot exceed seven consecutive nights. The reason for the travel restriction dates back to Buddha, when he discovered that during the rainy season, wandering monks tended to inadvertently trample farmers’ crops. Hearing this, Buddha said monks must find a proper place to stay, and this period is a time for contemplation, studying, and meditation. On a moonless night about five to six weeks before Buddhist Lent ends on Ok Phansa, another important Lao holiday takes place. “The Day of the Dead” (Boun Haw Khao Padap Din), which falls on 4 September this year, is devoted to remembering and paying respect to those who have passed away, with people offering rice cakes, fruit, and other foods to their ancestors. Families wrap their offerings in paper or banana leaves, and between 03.00-04.00, they place them at the stupas containing ashes of the dead. They then return at dawn for a ceremony. On about the same date, and when the rivers are at their highest, villages throughout the country begin holding boat races. These early rounds culminate the day after Ok Phansa, when the largest festivals take place. This year, Ok Phansa occurs on 19 October, with the evening’s Festival of Lights taking centre stage. For the celebration, families make boats from bamboo and banana trunks, decorate them with candles, and hold illuminated boat processions on rivers. Then after the boat races, the novices simply return to their everyday lives, known locally as the end of the “Wet and Unwild” season.

Events

Europe

Steak House

By Bouphamany Chounramany

are looking for a pleasant restaurant just outside Iandftheyoupeaceful city centre, where you can enjoy an excellent dining neighbourhood ambience with family and

friends, check out Europe Steak House which opened its doors to serve gourmet food in 1998. Located in Ban Thaphalansay, about a 10 to 15-minute drive from downtown Vientiane, Europe Steak House presents the pleasant atmosphere of the lovely home dishing out great meals far from traffic noise, and prompting patrons to return time after time. Europe Steak House holds the distinction as Laos’ first restaurant to serve cheese and meat fondue (fondue bourguignonne). And unlike its name, Europe Steak House also offers a variety of dishes such as pizza, pasta, salad, and seafood, with wines to match your choice. Bottom line, for a quiet and relaxing alternative for a meal with family or friends, try dining at Europe Steak House. It’s a guaranteed winner. Address: Ban Thaphalansay, Sisattanak District Opening Hours: Everyday for lunch from 10:30 to 14:00 and dinner from 17:30 to 23:00 Tel: 021 313 681 or 020 5551 6228

Muzaik

Restaurant and Bar By Bouphamany Chounramany

re you seeking a place for a casual, leisurely bonding session with a bunch of friends or a relaxing haven A to hang out after a long tiring day? Try Muzaik, located on a quiet road in the heart of Vientiane, which offers indoor dining or serves meals on its terrace overlooking the street. Unlike many of the capital’s top restaurants that serve expensive dishes to high-end customers, Muzaik mostly caters to locals and expats, who love fresh Lao-style home cooking as well as Thai and Western food. My favourite appetizers include Golden Triangle, homemade crackers topped with a slice of salmon and prawn and a dab of sauce, which goes well with a cold beer or glass of red wine. Also on my hit list are Fresh Spring Rolls, a tasty combination of fresh vegetables, prawns, and thin rice noodles…and don’t forget to dip your roll in Muzaik’s delicious homemade dipping sauce. So, the next time you are in the Namphu (fountain) area, do not forget to stroll down Manthatoulath Road and try the food and drink at Muzaik. Address: Manthatoulath Rd, Chanthabouly District Opening Hours: Everyday from 18:00 to 23:00 Tel: 020 5503 3113

unners from around the region and abroad are racing to register for the inaugural Luang Prabang Half Marathon, “La Procession”, a charity event being held on 5 October 2013, with all the proceeds going to Friends-International (FI), an award-winning International NGO with an upcoming project in Laos’ celebrated UNESCO World Heritage site. Even before the marathon’s starting guns have been fired, CNN Travel listed La Procession as one of Asia’s top five destination races due to its aim to give 100 per cent of the entrance fees to FI, and its seven-kilometre paved circuit that passes several of the city’s most famous sites. Mr Vongdavone, Manager of the Luang Prabang Department of Tourism and Hospitality, said, “It is good to see that the Luang Prabang Half Marathon is receiving such good recognition from the global media like CNN. We are very supportive of this event, as we hope it will show the best of Luang Prabang’s culture and environment to the visiting runners, and that they will choose to come back again and again.” CNN noted that organisers are offering concurrent 7k, 14k, and 21k races to “give, run, party, in that order,” and added that organisers are presenting the three options because running a full marathon is “a little anti-social, at least in terms of dealing with the post-run pain, and a big part of organising this race is to have a great party.” All the races are fully-sponsored, though entrants make minimum donations of USD200 to compete, while Gold Medal runners contribute USD1,000 or more. With sponsors covering the organisation costs, FI receives all of the entry fees. A separate is process is in place to boost the number of Lao entries. According to marathon organisers, registrations surpassed 400 in early June, placing the race on

track for a targeted 1,000 runners, evenly split between Lao and foreigners. La Procession’s seed was planted during a chance meeting at the 2011 Angkor Wat Half Marathon between runners, Michael Gilmore, based in HSBC’s Singapore office, and Bere Olmedo, who was employed at the Amansara hotel in Siem Reap. In Easter of 2012, they literally ran into each while jogging around Luang Prabang’s peninsula, and the idea for the race began to sprout. Mr Gilmore quickly found financial supporters in Aman Resorts, HSBC, and Lao Airlines, and several local businesses soon jumped in to back the effort. He also discovered that the community is enthusiastic. “Local industry, authorities, runners, friends, everyone I speak to see this as such a good idea, and they regularly offer to help out, making it something we just have to do.” Mr Gilmore said the organizers want to hold La Procession annually on the same weekend. “Runners really like to know that an event is in the calendar, and either do it again and again, or look out for it if they missed it the year before.” www.luangprabanghalfmarathon.com

」 www.luangprabanghalfmarathon.com

Luang Prabang Boat Races Begin

ongboats with up to 50 paddlers will take Lprovince’s to Luang Prabang’s waterways for the Boat Racing Festival, which kicks of 19

September. Competitions between villages take place every weekend until the grand finale just outside the UNESCO World Heritage City on 19 October, the day after the end of Buddhist Lent. Luang Prabang’s Boat Racing Festival (Boun Souang Heua) is spread over the final six weeks of the Lenten period, and the exact dates depend on the lunar calendar. This year’s races are slated to start in early September. Many of the larger events hit the rivers on the weekends, though rural villages tend to hold their traditional boat racing festivals every four or five days before the end of Buddhist Lent. With the rivers at their highest and fastest, and the rice having been planted in the fields and growing without need of critical care, this time of year is perfect for practicing synchronised paddling. After weeks of training, the oarsmen and women frantically race for a few hundred metres, stroking their super-long, narrow, and brightly decorated boats. With water splashing all around, the vessels pick up their pace, as they pass the throngs cheering for their village’s team, with music blaring in the background and fans guzzling beer.

By Bernie Rosenbloom

In the mornings of some local events, villagers fire homemade bamboo rockets into the air for good luck. The boats generally begin racing around midday and finish before sunset, and those staying in or around Luang Prabang town can catch the action on the Nam Khan River on the first day of the six-week racing period. Teams of women, mostly dressed in black and white, open the competitions, with the men racing later in the afternoon. The first race of the season lands on the exact day when the three-month Buddhist Lent period (see story on page 30) reaches its halfway point. Several villages in Luang Prabang Province hold their races on the Mekong or one of its tributaries during this time. The final race traditionally takes place at Ban Xieng Ngeun, about 30 km from Luang Prabang City, on the road to Vientiane. These first and last races of the season are the largest in Laos’ northern region, and behind the finish line seats, a market, with numerous stalls selling a cornucopia of domestic and imported products, collides with a carnival packed full of amusements and mini noodle shops. The beauty of this rainy season tradition is that few tourists are around, presenting a great opportunity for an up-close cultural experience and a look at Lao people at their best.

Thakaek

Sikhottabong S tupa

By Bernie Rosenbloom ather than take the morning bus from RSavannakhet Vientiane to Thakaek, I selected the sleeper to with a stop in Khammouane’s capital. Bad choice. I lost my glasses, snoozed through the “Thakaek, Thakaek, Thakaek” wakeup call at 01:30, and disembarked just in time to watch the last tuk tuk leave. What a disaster. I needed a place to sleep, and the bus station flophouse presented the only choice.

Old Thakaek My luck turned just after sunrise with a tuk tuk ride to the Mekong banks in Old Thakaek. Ferries floated across the lazy river to Nakhon Phanom, French colonial-style shop houses circled the Night Market, and a glass of Lao coffee steamed in my palms. Perfect. Though a rented motor scooter would have suited my needs, the New Zealand-Lao Community Based Tourism for Sustainable Economic Development Program hooked me up with the Provincial Tourism Department, and halfway through my second coffee, Kenta and Manovong arrived and swept me away to the 6th-century That Sikhottabong Stupa. A “Cultural Village” displaying nine ethnic groups’ traditional houses, lifestyles, and handicrafts welcomed us. We then walked to a statue of 8th century King Sikhot, before strolling down a palm-lined walkway to the 29-metre-tall, goldentipped stupa. Next up, “The Giant Wall” (Kampaeng Yak), pulled us 8 km north of Thakaek. As we approached, Kenta pointed to giant brown bricks, perfectly stacked behind a petrol station. Two minutes later, a “Giant Wall” sign pointed to the once-15km-long barricade. After pondering the perfectly chiselled, massive blocks erected in the 9th century with precision masonry, we ventured to find a segment used as a Catholic Church. | VISIT LAOS MAGAZINE 50

“Cave Alley”, the first 20 km of Route 12 as it leaves Thakaek, stars a half dozen caves, many with ancient Buddha images and underground rivers. It also launches “The Loop”, which includes the Nakai Plateau and Konglor. We started at Buddha Cave (Tham Pha Fa), where a new market was selling herbal cures, food, and handicrafts. I bought a knife carved from lucky mai moun wood. From here, a path with bridges crossed a lagoon to a staircase climbing the cliff to Buddha Cave. Boats at the base waited to row passengers into the lower cavern, but shallow water sent us upstairs to the 229 Buddha statues found in 2004. We then took a 400-meter trail from the market to a shady spot at a dock protruding into Nong Tao Lake. Locals barbecuing fish shared their feast of pa pok, one of the lake’s six species, while boats took tourists fishing. From here, a narrower path manoeuvred over boulders to Pa Xerm Cave, with its eyeless fish in the deep, dark waters, onto which you can kayak. With the clock ticking, we only had time for one more cave, Tham Nang Aen. Staircases zigzagged over the cave’s river and past rock formations to softly lit chambers and secret portholes. Boats waited to take explorers on a 1-km ride into the darkness. But the next day’s sunrise would see us off on The Loop and parts unknown.

The Katu of Sekong

Communal Mee tinghouse of Ka ndone Mai Villag e

By Linda S. McIntosh, PhD Earlier this year the Traditional Arts and Ethnology Centre of Luang Prabang sponsored a trip to visit Katu villages in southern Laos’ Sekong Province. As curator of the centre’s upcoming exhibit, “Carving a Community: The Katu People”, I led the group of researchers and filmmakers to learn about the customs and culture of the Katu. The Lao government officially recognises the Katu minority ethnic group, with its population of 30,000. Settlements are mainly in Sekong, but some villages are located in the neighbouring provinces of Salavan and Champasak. A larger population of 50,000 resides in Vietnam’s Central Highlands. Sekong’s Kaluem District hosts the original Katu communities, though entire villages have resettled in other parts of Sekong. Our group travelled to Thateng District, visited Kandone Mai and Chunla Pai Villages which still have communal meetinghouses, and Huaysay and Daunsaa Villages. The Katu consider the communal house as their heart. Its distinctive architecture features wooden structures on stilts, thatched tortoiseshell-shaped roofs, and elaborately carved wooden pillars and walls, with animals, especially pythons, as the favoured motifs. Lao communal houses contain other carved items such as sticky rice steamers, jars, and Buddha images. The Katu also hold community-wide festivals at the communal hall, the most important of which is the buffalo sacrifice that takes place in front of the house, and offers the only opportunity to observe both men and women

adorned in full ceremonial costume. Kandone Mai annually holds this celebration on 5 March. Isolation from living at different elevations in the steep Annamite Mountains and its river valleys has created subtle distinctions among the Katu. For example, Vietnamese Katu prefer black clothing with red and white details, while Lao Katu traditionally produce red textiles with black and white details. With the availability of a variety of coloured threads at many markets, Katu women can now produce clothing in a wide range of colours. As Katu women have been exposed to Lao and Phuthai weavings, they now create beaded pictorial designs, such as planes, buffalo, and other animals, on women’s skirts. Beaded textiles are very valuable, and in the past they could purchase a buffalo. In fact, a man’s beaded loincloth takes one year to weave. Katu men make a broad choice of intricate baskets and traps from different types of bamboo and rattan. The baskets vary in form and size, depending on their use. Some are loosely woven, using broad fibres for baskets intended to carry wood, bamboo, or corn from the fields and forests. More densely woven baskets hold rice, and in the past they could weave baskets so fine, that they could hold water. Katu men also make and use baskets, which could be viewed as the original backpacks. It comprises three compartments for holding tools, tobacco, rice, and items foraged from the forest. The Katu maintained many cultural traits after moving to Thateng District, and one-day village visits can be arranged in Pakxe. Visitors can also enjoy lunch and Lao coffee at the Suan Sinouk Resort, which also offers nice accommodation in the cool weather at the foot of the Boloven Plateau, just 4 km from Thateng town.
