Lao Handicrafts Festival showcases contemporary and traditional crafts exclusive to the rich and diverse cultures of Laos.

Artisans from around the country will be selling a wide range of handmade products including textiles, jewellery, non-timber forest products, recycled and wood products, pottery and cultural items. Food products such as coffee, tea and spices that are made in Laos also feature at the event. Now in its eleventh year, the Lao Handicraft Festival is more than just a shopping opportunity. The Northern Bus Station is the main departure point. Buses bound for Luang Prabang depart regularly throughout the day. The air-con buses are comfortable for the long journey while the VIP buses provide an extra space, a snack and a bottle of water. Normal bus takes 10-12 hours. Any bus bound for Luang Prabang can drop you off in Vang Vieng, though you pay the same ticket price as if you were going all the way. Another option is to book a mini-bus from a travel agency. ollowing a three-month period when monks spent most of their time in prayer and meditation and restricted their travels, and the rains have let up, many have abstained from drinking alcohol and/or focused on spiritual matters, the end of the Buddhist Lent has arrived. It’s time to celebrate, and there are many upcoming occasions for just that. 入雨居の３カ月間、僧侶はその時間の大部分を祈りや瞑想に費やし、外泊を厳しく禁じられる。また、この期間は多くの仏教徒が禁酒したり、宗教的行事を自粛する。入雨居が終わってからは、ラオス全国で多くの重要なイベントが次々と行われる。

Boun Ork Phansa ブンオークパンサー

End of Buddhist Lent On the first day, the 15th day of the waxing moon of the 11th month of the Lao calendar, at dawn, all the monks in the monastery gather at the Sim or Viharn, the main chapel, to attend ‘Pavarana’, which is observed exclusively by senior monks and is sometimes compared to a confession. This ceremony officially ends Buddhist Lent. Takbat are the morning offerings, placed in the monks’ and novices’ alms bowls, while a senior monk reads aloud the holy scriptures and makes ablutions to transfer merit to the dead. In the evening, the monastic community and lay people participate in a candlelit procession three times around around the Sim. On this special evening, all monuments in the monastery (Sim, Stupa, Kouti) – the monk’s quarters – are illuminated with candles. Lay people also light candles around their houses in homage to Buddha. End of Buddhist Lent 出雨居

ラオス歴１１月の上弦の月１５日目の明け方、寺院内の僧侶たちが全員本堂に集まり、“Pavarana”という儀式に参加する。この儀式は高僧も参加し、時に懺悔と比較されるが、正式に雨季の終わりを告げる儀式である。早朝から托鉢を行い、高僧による読経を聞き、死者へ功徳を捧げるため沐浴を行う。夕方にはその寺の檀家や信徒らが蝋燭を持って本堂の周りを３周する。この特別な夜には、本堂、塔、クティ（僧侶の宿舎）など寺院内の全ての建物が蝋燭でライトアップされる。信徒も蝋燭に火を灯し、自宅の周りを回る。これはブッダへの敬意の表明である。

Bang Fai Phanya Nak バンファイパヤナーク

The Naga King’s Rockets At the end of Buddhist Lent a strange phenomenon happens every year on the Mekong River, some fifty kilometres downstream from Vientiane. It’s known as ‘Bang Fai Phanya Nak ‘or the Naga King’s rockets. Tennis size balls of red colour emerge from the water, one after another, and projected high into the air before fading and disappearing. Some years, a flurry of hundreds of these fireballs erupts from the water leaving crowds in awe. It is believed that the fireballs are sent by the King of the Nagas in homage to Lord Buddha at the End of Lent. Scientists think the fireballs are just methane gas. But why do they come out precisely on the End of Buddhist Lent? This mysterious event attracts scores of people from both Laos and Thailand. It happens only once a year, on and around the day of the End of Buddhist Lent. ナーガ王のロケット

雨季の終わり頃に、ヴィエンチャンから約15kmほど下流のメコン川沿いで毎年不思議な現象が起こるという。これはパヤナーク、つまりナーガ王のロケット、と呼ばれている。テニスボールサイズの赤い火の玉が川から次々と飛び出し、空中高く弧を描き、そして消える。数百もの火の玉が川から飛び出すのを見ることができる年もある。この火の玉は、ナーガ王が雨季の終わりに仏陀へ敬意を表して送っているものだと信じられている。一方科学者らはこの火の玉はたんなるメタンガスだと考えている。しかしなぜ特に雨季の終わりにだけ現れるのか？この神秘的なイベントにはラオスとタイ両側から大勢の人が集まる。1年に1度だけ、雨季の終わり・オークパンサーの日前後に起こる。

Lai Hua Fai

ライフアファイ Festival of the Boats of Light 灯篭流し祭り

Lai Hua Fai means “floating boats of light”. This festival is celebrated on the night of the End of Buddhist Lent. It‘s observed all over Laos, transforming the country’s rivers into mesmerizing streams of light. The festival in Vientiane attracts big crowds of devotees and tourists, and the one in Luang Prabang is even more spectacular. At the heart of the activity is the Kathong, a small round skiff of folded banana leaves on a slice of banana tree trunk decorated with flowers. At the bank of the river, people light candles and incense on the Kathong, say prayers and send their boats floating and twinkling away to destinations unknown downstream. This rite has several aims. One is in homage to the river, especially the Mekong River, which literally means Mother of All Things. Temples and villages build their boats of light, which are much bigger and more elaborately decorated. Two types of boats of light are built for that night: the normal Hua Fai, which is floated down the river, and Hua Fai Khowk, which stays on the temple ground. In Luang Prabang, each temple and each village sends a boat to join the procession on the main street leading to Vat Xiengthong, an elaborate 16th century temple. The boats are lined up and a jury awards prizes to those judged the most beautiful. After that, one by one, the boats are brought down the staircases of Vat Xiengthong and are delicately placed in the water and floated down the Mekong among the thousands of small individual banana leaf skiffs in a breathtaking sea of lights. Laihuafaiとは“光の浮き船”という意味である。このお祭りはオークパンサーの夜に、ラオス全国の川がある場所で行われている。ビエンチャンでのお祭りは観光客や信者が大勢集まり混雑するが、ルアンパバーンはさらに美しく壮大である。カトーンと呼ばれる小さな灯篭がバナナの葉とバナナの木の幹で作られる。川岸で蝋燭に火を灯し、願いことを唱えながらその灯篭を川に流す。無数の灯篭が蝋燭の火をちらちらと灯しながらメコン川を流れていくその情景はとても神秘的だ。この儀式にはいくつかの目的がある。そのひとつは川、特に母なる川と呼ばれるメコン川への敬意の表しである。また、多くの寺や村が、灯篭よりさらに大きく、飾り付けされた船を造る。その夜のために作られる船には2種類あり、ひとつは通常の川へ流す用のHuaFai（光の船）、もう一つは寺院へ置いておくためのHuaFaiKhowkである。ルアンパバーンでは各寺及び村で船を造り、ワットシェントーンという16世に建てられた美しい寺院までのパレードに参加する。ボートは寺に並べられ、最も美しいボートが表彰される。それから、一つずつワットシェントーンから運び出され、メコン川にそっと浮かばせる。そしてその船は無数のバナナの葉でできた小舟の間を流されていく。

ブンスアフア Boat Race Festival ボートレース祭り

In Luang Prabang, Boun Suang Hua, the Boat Race Festival is held on Hor Khao Padap Din, the Day of the Commemoration of the Dead. In Vientiane it is held the day after the End of Buddhist Lent. Both are important social and sport events witnessed by huge crowds. One week before the race, Fa Ngoum Quai (along Fa Ngoum road) is taken over by stalls selling all kinds of goods and foods or games, and loud music is played all day and into the night. Big crowds gather along the banks of the Mekong River to watch and cheer on the boats. Next to the official stand a traditional orchestra plays to accompany each race and accelerate the tempo as the boats close in on the finish line, dramatically adding to the momentum. ルアンパバーンではブンスアフア、つまりボートレース祭りは「ホーカオパダップディン」と言う死者を祀る日に行われ、ヴィエンチャンではオークパンサーの次の日に行われる。どちらも社会的に重要なスポーツイベントであり、多くの人が訪れ非常に混雑する。ボートレースの1週間前にはFa Ngoum Quai（ファーグム道路沿い）は様々な品物や食べ物を売る露店やゲームのお店でひしめき、賑やかな音楽が朝から晩まで流れる。大勢の人がメコン川の川岸に集まり、ボート競走を応援する。公式スタンドの隣では伝統楽団が各レースに合わせて演奏し、ボートがゴールラインに近づくと勢いを加えるためテンポを早める。ボートレース祭りは国の守護神であるナーガと水の神々への敬意そのものだと言えるだろう。

That Luang Festival 仏舎利塔のお祭り The That Luang Festival is held on the 15th day of the waxing moon of the 12th month of the Lao calendar. Thousands of monks and tens of thousands of pilgrims come from all over the country and even from Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam to attend the festival. One week before the religious festival, a huge international trade fair features goods and exhibitions from all over the world. The religious festival starts with a procession at Simuang temple. The procession gathers Phasat Pheung (wax castles) of banana trunks decorated with flowers made of wax. The Phasat, which are commissioned by families or villagers in and around Vientiane, are carried three times around the Sim and then offered to the temple. This procession is very spontaneous and colourful and ends with fireworks, which symbolise an offering of flowers of light to Lord Buddha. The next day, at 1:00 pm, a bigger and more elaborate procession brings more wax castles through the Eastern Gate of the That Luang cloister. The wax castles are carried three times around the Grand Stupa and offered to the shrine. On the last day of the festival, as early as 5:00 am, thousands of devotees gather in the cloister and around it, on the esplanade to participate in Takbat, the morning offering to the monks. After the ceremony, each family gather at stalls to eat Khao Poun, the traditional rice noodle soup and Tom Kai, chicken soup. Early in the afternoon, there is the ritual game of Teekhee, a polo game originating in the Kingdom of Vientiane and believed to be exported to Burma and later to England. In the past, the game was between a team of officials and a team of villagers. The latter should always be victorious. Nowadays, it is merely a sports game between two teams from Vientiane. In the evening, monks and devotees attend a candlelit procession around the Grand Stupa and the Festival is closed with an important offering of ‘flowers of light’ to Lord Buddha (spectacular fireworks). タートルアン祭りはラオス暦の12月15日に行われる。大勢の僧侶と巡礼者がラオス全土だけでなくタイ、カンボジア、ベトナムからもこの祭りのために集まってくる。また、この宗教的行事の1週間前からは全国から集まった国際トレードフェアも行われる。宗教祭祀は、蝋でできた花で飾られたバナナの幹のPhasat Pheung（蝋でできた城）を持ってワットシームアンから出発し、パレードが行われる。ヴィエンチャン市内や周辺の村々や家庭から委嘱された蝋の城は本堂の周りを３周まわり、寺院へ奉納される。

このパレードは自然発生的でそしてとてもカラフルであり、また仏陀へ光の花の奉納を象徴した花火で締めくくられる。翌日午後１時、さらに大規模なパレードがより多くの蝋の城を伴ってタートルアン回廊の東門を通過する。そして蝋の城は中心の金塔の周りを３周まわってから寺院へと奉納される。祭りの最終日は朝５時、何千人もの信者が托鉢のために回廊内外や遊歩道に集まり、僧侶へ朝の奉納を行う。儀式後には各家庭でカオプンという伝統的な米麺やトムカイという鶏肉スープを食べる。

また、午後の早いうちにティキーと呼ばれる、かつてヴィエンチャン王国で行われ、後にブルマやイギリスに伝わったとされる、ホッケーのような伝統的スポーツゲームが行われる。昔は、オフィシャルチームと村チームの間で行われており、後者が常に勝者である必要があった。現在ではヴィエンチャンの２チーム間での単なるスポーツ競技となっている。夕方は僧侶と信者がキャンドルを持って金塔の周りを行進し、仏陀への光の花（花火）の奉納を以って祭りに終わりを告げる。

Vientiane Capital That Luang

A symbol of Laos’s nationhood and the country’s most sacred Buddhist monument, That Luang was built in the 16th century under the rule of King Setthathirat. A symbol of the main stupa appears on the country’s national seal.

Patuxai

Patuxai (literally Victory Gate or Gate of Triumph), formerly the Anousavary or Anousavari Monument, is situated in the centre of Vientiane. Built between 1962 and 1968.

Wat Ho Phakeo

Built in 1565 as a royal chapel and repository for the celebrated statue of the Emerald Buddha, which the Laotians had seized from Northern Thailand in 1551. The statue remained in the temple until 1778, when the Thais invaded and recaptured it, taking it to Bangkok. The temple was destroyed in 1828-1829 during the Thai sacking of Vientiane; rebuilt in 1936; and restored again in 1993.

That Dam

Known as the ‘Black Stupa’, many locals believe this mythological structure was once inhabited by a seven-headed dragon (now dormant) that stood to protect the city from the threat of the Siamese. Another tale that does the rounds says that the gold that once graced the surface was taken when the Siamese army ransacked Vientiane back in 1828.

Buddha Park (Xieng Khuan)

24km south of Vientiane, Buddha Park is in a field near the Mekong River. The park, as its name would suggest, is littered with religious sculptures and was built in 1958 by the philosopher Bunleua Sulilat who famously combined Buddhist and Hindu philosophy, mythology and iconography. Wat Sisaket

The only temple in Vientiane to survive the sacking of the city by the Siamese in 1828, Wat Sisaket is the oldest and considered by many to be the most interesting of the Laotian temples.

istoric temples and sacred stupas stand proudly in many of the Southern Laos’s town centers, laying testament to former empires and economic affluence. The remains of possibly the first urban settlement in Southeast Asia dating back to the 7th century can be found at the base of the Vat Phou Temple Complex, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Of interest to war historians is the Ho Chi Minh Trail, which spans the country’s eastern border with Vietnam from Khammouane down to Attapeu. In the eastern plateaus are mountain communities of Mon-Khmer origins, best known for their intricate cotton textiles and communal long houses. The major festival of the south is the Vat Phou Festival in Champasak Province. he geography and nature of the south is extremely diverse. The Bolaven Plateau, well known for its coffee plantations, cascading waterfalls and cool climate; the Dakcheung Plateau and Annamite Mountains where new mammal species are being discovered by science each year and the 4,000 Mekong River Islands with expansive wetlands, world class rapids and riverside beaches. Six of the country’s 20 national protected areas (NPA) are in the south which holds some of the most biologically important areas in the world. Most notably is the Xe Pian NPA with its rich wetland environment and river system inhabited by rare migratory and endemic bird species.

Kaeng nor mai (Lao bamboo shoot soup) It is tasty and a little spicy, with lots of vegetables and mushrooms. Main Ingredients: Bamboo shoots, pumkin leaves, mushrooms, red chili peppers, baby pumpkin, galangal, lemongrass chopped, mud fish sauce (called “pa-daek” ), fish sauce, red onions, sticky rice, basil... The most important ingredient is “yanang” water (extracted from green leaves). Lao people believe that yanang is a good herb or medicine, especially for women.

Pakse パクセー

Pakse is the capital of Champasak Province, located at the mouth of the rivers Xedong and Mekong. It is the most populous city in the southern province of Champasak, making it the third most populous city in Laos. The term Pakse means the ‘Mouth of the River Se’. The Pakse International Airport serves as a link to the Bolaven Plateau and has connections to Siem Reap, Vientiane and Bangkok. On the banks of either of the two rivers, you can enjoy the country’s famous ‘Beer Lao’ and watch spectacular sunsets. Try “sai-kok” (sweet pork sausage), “som-moo” (sour pork) and “yor” (white pork sausage).

Weaving Along the Mekong in Southern Laos

Handwoven textiles reflect life of the people of Laos, playing important roles in their daily lives. Cloth serves as dress, household objects, gifts, and ceremonial items. In the past, the majority of the women living in the country wove cloth for these purposes. There has been a decline in household production in recent years but weaving continues throughout the country. In southern Laos, the Lao and Phuthai living along the Mekong River’s left bank and on its small isles and members of various ethnic groups, such as the Mankhong, Katang, Katu, and Ta-oi, residing in more distant areas maintain their weaving traditions.

Nineteenth century travel writing mentions the cultivation of cotton and indigo along the banks of the Mekong and her tributaries, and farming of these raw materials can still be seen when visiting rural areas during the rainy season. Visitors can visit Ban Phone Sim near the provincial capital and some Lao and Phuthai villages in Songkhone District of Savannakhet Province to view the processing of indigo and cotton.

Indigo is prolific and readily dyes cotton, and the end products are used as dress, household goods, and ceremonial items. In Savannakhet, Lao and Phuthai indigo-dyed women’s clothing is distinctive, since the traditional skirt, or sin, is decorated with striking indigo and white weft ikat patterning. Weft ikat is a resist dye process on unwoven threads, and patterns appear when the threads are woven into cloth. A private enterprise, Thong Lahasinh, has been dedicated to the preservation of local knowledge in regards to textile production. Other natural dyestuffs used to create different colors are also produced in their centralized workshop in Savannakhet City. Mankhong skirt

Traditional textile production persists in eastern Savannakhet among the Phuthai and some minority groups, including the Katang and Mankhong, who produce cloth similar to the Phuthai but also add details to make their cloth distinct. Some individual households in this area cultivate indigo and cotton and some raise silkworms to form silk. Various projects are also encouraging weaving for commercial sale.

Traveling south into Salavan and Sekong Provinces, weaving continues among women of other ethnic groups, such as the Katu and Ta-oi. The method of production in these areas differs because it is carried out on back strap looms where weaving in Savannakhet and Champasak Province is carried out on frame looms. Another unusual characteristic is the insertion of beads or seeds into the cloth as it is being woven. サラワン、セコン県などの南部へ旅行すると、カトゥ族・タオイ族などの少数民族の女性の間で織物が存続しているのを目にすることができる。地域毎に織り方が異なり、サワナケットでは腰帯機で織られ、チャンパサック県ではフレーム式の水平織機が用いられる。もうひとつの珍しい特徴としては、織る際にビーズや種が一緒に織りこまれることだ。

Sericulture or the raising of silkworms was previously more prolific in southern Laos. Presently, silk and synthetic yarns are readily available in the local markets and have replaced much of the locally produced materials. In Ban Saphai and Don Kho of Champasak, the demand for textiles from other parts of Laos and neighboring countries of Cambodia and Thailand is high, household members do not have time to produce the raw materials. However, weavers on some of the neighboring islands in the Mekong continue to practice sericulture.

In Champasak Province, The textiles, especially material for sin, of Ban Saphai and Don Kho are so popular that weaving has become the primary occupation for many households. Almost every home has more than one loom to produce finely striped cloth or fabric with delicate weft ikat designs. Elaborately woven skirt borders are also very popular and are also sold in the national capital’s markets. チャンパサック県では、バンサパイとドンコーの織物、特にシン用の布は非常に有名で、機織りが多くの世帯にとっての主要な稼業となっている。ほとんどの家に、繊細な絣模様のはいった布や服を作る部屋が1室以上ある。精巧に織られたティンシン（シンの裾の部分）も非常に人気があり、ヴィエンチャンの市場でも売られている。

Markets are outlets for handwoven cloth produced in the local areas. Larger markets, such as those found in the provincial capitals of Pakse and Savannakhet, offer these and weavings from other parts of the country. Traditional textiles continue to be an important part of life in Laos, and opportunities to view various stages of production and purchase a memento directly from its creator is still possible along the winding river banks of southern Laos. 市場は地元で作られた手織りの布の直売場所である。パクセーやサワナケットなどの県都で見られる大規模な市場では、地元の産品の他、他の地域からの織物も販売している。伝統的な織物はラオスの生活において重要な一部分であり、ラオス南部の曲がりくねったメコンの川岸では、今でも様々な製品の段階を見たり、作り手から直接その作品を購入することができる。

Dr. Linda S. McIntosh is a curator of Mainland Southeast Asian textiles with a focus on weavings produced in Laos and Thailand. Her Masters degree in Southeast Asian Studies from the University of Wisconsin, USA, focused on the textiles of Thailand, and her doctoral thesis from Simon Fraser University, Canada, explored Lao textiles. Field research led her to collect data not only in Thailand and Laos but also in Vietnam, Cambodia, and Burma. “Kiet Ngong”: A hidden (but easily discovered) treasure of southern Laos

“Kiet Ngong” is one of Champasack province’s little-known, hidden tourist gems. Located in the heart of the Xe Pian National Biodiversity Conservation Area the lake is planted in the center of an area rich in natural and scenic wealth. But the word is getting out, and opportunities for encounters with such a unique, unspoiled area are gradually bringing treasure hunters in greater numbers. The conservation area’s 240,000 hectares (representing the second largest of Laos’s 21 protected parks) means it offers an astounding array of amphibious, forest and feathered creatures – surrounded by an equally dazzling density of plant life that sustains the ecosystem and local people. Bird lovers, especially, will think they have flown to paradise. This is a sanctuary and habitat for some of the rarest species in the world and contains a wider variety of feathered species than any other protected area. A boat ride across the lake offers endless bird watching opportunities, and for true ornithologists, it’s the opportunity to perhaps identify a species still unknown to science. A few rare and important ones found here include: giant ibis, black ibis, sarus crane, white-winged duck and the white rumped, long billed and red headed vulture. For travelers focused more closely on the horizon, dense jungles hold globally endangered mammals such as tigers, bantengs, irrawaddy dolphins, Asian elephants, gaurs, sun bears, Asiatic black bears, yellow-checked crested gibbons and more. Add to this a diversity of ethnic communities, and the sense of travel discovery is boundless. Visitors to the lake can take a boat to one of several serene islands. For those wanting to stay ashore, hiking paths wind through the forest where visitors can explore paths through dense jungle and stops for visits in local communities. Elephant rides are also offered. Get there: From Pakse and the west: It takes 1 hour from Pakse to Kiet Ngong. Travel by taxi, or a songthaew bus from the southern bus station (8 km east of town). You can also catch a bus on Route 13. Get off the public bus at Km 48 junction with Route 18, Thang Beng village, where you can visit the Xe Pian NPA Office. From here follow Route 18 for 7 km eastwards. Turn right at the signpost for the last 1½ km to Ban Kiet Ngong. To get to Ban Pha Pho, continue along Route 18. After 5 km turn right at Ban Kele and go on 4 km to Pha Pho. A tourism information center is located in Kiet Ngong Village, open daily from 7:00 am to 5:00 pm. Here tourists are able to choose from a variety of land and water routes and activities.

Students in Vientiane came to That Luang field to compete in handwashing games, dancing and singing competitions. Families brought their children to play games and win prizes. Tell us about your education and movie-making background After I finished high school at Miami Springs Senior High in Miami, Florida I went to Johnson and Wales University, Providence, Rhode Island to study computer science. I finished with a two-year associate degree. I didn’t attend the extra two years to complete my bachelor degree. Instead, I decided to go back to Bangkok to study film at Rangsit University and finished my bachelor degree in communication art. When I was studying there I had a chance to make a lot of short films for class assignments and helped friends who were also shooting short films. 2. Is “Huk Aum Lum” the first film you directed alone? I would say yes – for a feature film. Earlier, I directed one part of Brown Sugar (a Thai erotic art feature film) called “So Bon Tieng”. It was a feature that put three short films together. 3. How did the story ideas hit you? I just felt it and imagined the storyline; most of it came from my experiences of being young. 4. What is “Huk Aum Lum” about? Huk Aum Lum is a romantic comedy. The cast is made up of Lao singers including Sack of the Cells, Aphone (Alee Shawty), Jia Pacific, and DJ Keo Kung. In short, the movie is about a singer (Sack) who is from the countryside who has become a star in the city, but then he feels like that’s not what he wants. When Sack returns to his village, his many fond memories make him realize how happy he is. He’s also looking for a way to rekindle a relationship with Sopha (Phailinda Philavanh,

Miss Lao 2009). However, things don’t go as smoothly as expected. We did it by piecing together a bunch of short, chaotic, exaggerated, funny scenes. I think the movie will give our audience a lot of smiles and laughter. 5. Where did you get the funding to produce “Huk Aum Lum”? Hemon Studio had faith in the film and wanted to build up the Lao film industry. So they hired Lao New Wave Cinema Production and invested in “Huk Aum Lum” financially and emotionally. 6. Why is it a romantic comedy? Was there something thematic you wanted to convey with a comedy? This movie was mostly filmed in a beautiful village in Phou Khao Kouay (Buffalo Mountain). It may sound cliché - “a young man returns to his beautiful unspoiled countryside seeking a slower and peaceful life”, but I think my movie can act as a light-hearted warning to our society. It stems from my own tired feelings of what most people call ‘a city life’, filled with traffic jams, construction, cars and faces of despair … All we have to do is look around to see how many people increasingly consider material possessions and physical comfort as more important than their spiritual or emotional wellbeing. I also want people to see another side of some Lao singers’ life. Their fans always see them dressed nicely and fashionably in concerts and in MVs. Many of them watch from their own small, poor houses or cheap apartments, they eat instant noodles for breakfast, lunch or dinner. It’s this idea that I hope the Lao entertainment community will recognize and choose to focus their artistic energy on in order to help bring us all a little closer to our roots.

here is no doubt that Laos is changing, or indeed that some change is good and some change is bad. In this time of rapid development it seems important to pause and consider the things that are significant in life and whether the change is taking us in the right direction. This film asks people to do exactly that. Happy Laos is a community project that brings together interviews with over 100 people across 5 provinces of Laos. Individuals and organizations submitted footage of children, monks, government officials, development workers, weavers, farmers, and more talking about what happiness means to them. “Happiness is subjective but if we can agree that happiness is important then we need to learn about how different people understand and experience happiness. We know from our own experience that happiness is not always straightforward - we don’t always know what makes us happy and sometimes we make mistakes! Understanding our own happiness requires reflection. This film provides a starting place to encourage that learning and reflection”, said Christina McMellon, happiness researcher and co-producer of the film. The film has two main aims. Firstly it encourages Lao people to start thinking and talking together about their own happiness - and it will be distributed to communities across the country. Secondly it encourages people working in development to think about the links between happiness, development and poverty alleviation. The Asia Europe People’s Forum, held in Vientiane this month, was a great opportunity to share this film with such an international audience. The film was made possible by donations from Vientiane College, Women’s International Group and The French Embassy as well as donations from nearly 80 people from all over the world through a successful Indiegogo campaign. 52

7. What are some qualities in yourself and others that that you think are important to good directing? Directing a film is not just about showing up and telling the team to do this and that; it’s about managing everything on the set. A good film director should provide creative ideas and carry the team from the beginning to the end. This is something I’ve always tried to do in my opportunities working as a director. 8. What’s the best advice you could give others in the film industry? Just do it with all your heart, tell the story that you really feel and want to tell.

“Huk Aum Lum”の監督“Phanumad Disattha”に8つの質問

1. 今までの学歴と映画製作の経歴について教えてください

The team of three behind this project includes two Australian volunteers, Sam Pike (AVID) and Liena Lacey (AYD) who are placed within different Learning Centers at PADETC (Participatory Development Training Center). Sam works in Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) at Sompanya School and Liena works with the social enterprise Saoban. Film festival ルアンパバーン映画祭

The Luang Prabang Film Festival (LPFF) is an annual celebration of filmmaking in Southeast Asia that aims to educate Lao people about film as a means of cultural expression and communication, and to support a nascent local industry and art form. Since 2010, the LPFF has supported and engaged local filmmakers seeking to develop the domestic industry and encouraged Southeast Asia filmmakers to contribute to an exchange between regional film industries. This year’s festival will take place December 1-5, 2012, and will bring together filmmakers and celebrities from across the region. Workshops, screenings and other activities throughout the year will help to raise awareness about the project, and build excitement for the grand event. Led by the Chairman of our Board of Directors, Mr. Ananda Everingham, we are pleased to highlight collaboration between Laos and Thailand this year. In addition to welcoming many VIP guests from Thailand at our event in December, LPFF is thrilled to be facilitating a Lao-Thai co-production, produced by, and starring, Mr. Everingham, and directed by a talented Lao filmmaker. ルアンパバーン映画祭（LPFF）は東南アジアで毎年行われる映画製作祭で、文化的表現やコミュニケーションの手段として、ラオスの人々に対する映画に関する教育、及び新興地場産業と芸術表現の支援を目的としている。2010年以降、LPFFは地元の映画製作者に国内産業を発展させるよう支援・奨励し、また東南アジアの映画製作者にも地域間の映画産業交流に寄与するよう奨励してきた。

今年のLPFFは2012年12月1-5日に開催され、各地から映画製作者や有名人が集まる。年間を通じてワークショップ、上映会、その他様々なイベントがこのプロジェクトへの意識向上を後押しし、同イベントへの期待を高めてきた。取締役代表のMr Ananda Everinghamを代表し、今年のラオスとタイのコラボレーションに対して我々はとても光栄に思っている。さらに12月のイベントにはタイからも多数のVIPゲストを招待している。LPFFでMr Everinghamプロデュース、有能なラオス映画製作者編集のラオ-タイ共同作品が発表されるのが非常に楽しみだ。
