Vientiane Capital Attractions

That Luang A symbol of Laos’s nationhood and the country’s most sacred Buddhist monument, That Luang was built in the 16th century under the rule of King Setthathirat. A symbol of the main stupa appears on the country’s national seal. (Map: K-1)

Patuxai (literally Victory Gate or Gate of Triumph), formerly the Anousavary or Anousavari Monument, is situated in the centre of Vientiane, and was built between 1962 and 1968. (Map: H-2)

Wat Ho Phakeo Built in 1565 as a royal chapel and repository for the celebrated statue of the Emerald Buddha, which the Laotians had seized from Northern Thailand in 1551. The statue remained in the temple until 1778, when the Thais invaded and recaptured it, taking it to Bangkok. The temple was destroyed in 1828-1829 during the Thai sacking of Vientiane; rebuilt in 1936; and restored again in 1993. (Map: G-5)

Mekong Promenade & Night Market Located in the Mekong riverfront right in the heart of Vientiane. Visitors can enjoy a pleasant walk the Promenade and a magnificent view of the sunset at twilight. Here, the local folks partake in many exercise activities. You can also find souvenirs, T-shirts, toys, paintings, coconut drinks and many more at the Night Market. Chao Anouvong Park, which is part of the Promenade and where one can sit and relax. Every year, the boat racing festival is also held here right after the end of Buddhist Lent. (Map: E-4)

That Dam Known as the ‘Black Stupa’, many locals believe this mythological structure was once inhabited by a seven-headed dragon (now dormant) that stood to protect the city from the threat of the Siamese. Another tale that does the rounds says that the gold that once graced the surface was taken when the Siamese army ransacked Vientiane back in 1828. (Map: G-4)

Our thanks for the information from www.visit-mekong.com

Wat Sisaket The only temple in Vientiane to survive the sacking of the city by the Siamese in 1828, Wat Sisaket is the oldest and considered by many to be the most interesting of the Laotian temples. (Map: G-4)

Buddha Park (Xieng Khuan) 24km south of Vientiane, Buddha Park is in a field near the Mekong River. The park, as its name would suggest, is littered with religious sculptures and was built in 1958 by the philosopher Bunleua Sulilat who famously combined Buddhist and Hindu philosophy, mythology and iconography. By Linda S. McIntosh, PhD between a guesthouse and the Italian restaurant Aria on Rue Francois Ngin in Vientiane lays a treasure trove Bcalleduried Indigo Lao. Any savvy connoisseur of fine objects will

sigh in relief when stepping into this small shop of tastefully selected and arranged products - collectible textiles, new weavings and clothing, jewellery, basketry, and works of arts - painstakingly selected by storeowner Selena Sourignosack. Ms. Sourignosack, a Lao American, who studied architecture at the University of Houston, returned to Vientiane over 10 years ago to open her own architect firm. Meanwhile, she began to collect traditional Lao handicrafts and arts, including textiles and baskets. As her collection grew, an idea emerged in Ms. Sourignosack’s mind…open a store to share some of her great finds with the public. In February 2010, she launched Indigo Lao. During buying trips to Thailand and Vietnam over the years, she uncovered loads of treasures, which pulled her further afield to countries in South and Central Asia. There, Ms. Sourignosack uncovered objects from bold necklaces glittering with semi-precious stones to carpets, which are tough to find in Laos, but available at Indigo Lao. What also sets Indigo Lao apart from other boutiques is its selection of high-quality and artistically created woven items and traditional tools used by Laos’ various ethnic groups. Next to the counter, collectors will find a small display of silver jewellery and accessories worn by Lao women in the past. Indigo Lao also offers textiles from Phaeng Mai Gallery, as well as products from various non-profit groups, such as Sisterhood. Ms. Sourignosack also advises on product development, sometimes playing a more active role by designing goods to sell exclusively in her store. Indigo Lao regularly changes its stock, so dedicated collectors must frequently visit the store to find what new treasures Ms. Sourignosack has on her shelves.

Boun Ork Phansa:

The End of Buddhist Lent

19 October

Boun Ork Phansa, the end of Buddhist Lent, falls on 19 October this year. At dawn, monks take part in Pavarana, a ceremony overseen by senior monks, at chapels (sims). The ritual begins with offerings placed in the monks alms’ bowls. In the evening, people participate in candlelit processions, in which they walk around sims three times. Afterwards, they light candles on the temples’ monuments.

Laos’ three-month Buddhist Lent, a time for prayer and mediation while monks remain in a temple, has come to an end, and now it is time to celebrate, with plenty of festivals on the calendar.

Lai Hua Fai:

Festival of the Boats of Light

19 October

Lao people end Buddhist Lent by celebrating Lai Hua Fai (Floating Boats of Lights). The nation’s rivers glow with streams of light emanating from kathong, small floats made of folded banana leaves on banana trunks, decorated with flowers, and lit with candles and incense. Huge crowds gather along riversides to launch their kathong, while saying prayers and paying homage to the rivers. Many consider Luang Prabang’s festival as the most spectacular, as the temples and villages build bigger, more elaborately decorated “Boats of Light”. They parade their kathongs to Vat Xiengthong, and awards go to those judged the most beautiful. Then, they bring the boats to the Mekong to float downstream.

ラオスでは出雨居をLaihuafai(光の浮き船)で祝う。

Every year at the end of Buddhist Lent, a phenomenon occurs on the Mekong, known as Bang Fai Phaya Nak (the Naga King’s Rockets). This evening finds mysterious coloured balls pop from the river, and into the night sky. Scientists cannot explain the fireball flurry, but the faithful believe the Naga King fires them to pay respect to Buddha. This event draws hundreds of people from Laos, Thailand, and Cambodia, and Bolikhamxay’s Vat Phonsane presents the best vantage point.

Boun That Luang:

Festival of the Grand Stupa

17 November

This year’s Vientiane That Luang Festival falls on 17 November, when thousands of monks and Buddhist pilgrims journey from all over Lao, Thailand, and Cambodia to the sacred site, while a trade fair takes place featuring goods and exhibitions from around the world. The festival starts at Si Muang Temple with the faithful carrying phasat pheung (wax castles) around the sim three times, before offering them to the temple. The procession ends with fireworks, symbolising an offering of “flowers of light” to Lord Buddha. The next day at 13.00, a similar wax castle parade occurs at That Luang. On the final day, devotees gather at That Luang to offer alms to the monks. Then, families gather at stalls to eat khao poun, a traditional rice noodle soup, and tom kai chicken soup. In the evening, monks and devotees attend a candlelit procession around That Luang, before the festival closes with fireworks.

Le Trio Coffee Roasting Boutique By Bouphamany Chouramany offee lovers in Laos have probably come C across the “Le Trio Coffee” brand. Their ground coffee and whole beans stand on the shelves of

several popular food marts in Vientiane Capital, and now you can get a glass of this gourmet pickme-up at the recently opened “Le Trio Coffee Roasting Boutique” located on Setthathirath road, on the hip part of town. Le Trio began life in 2008, occupying a small corner of the Phimphone Market near the Nam Phu Fountain. Owned by Phonesavanh “Nini” Vilivong, her main task was to hunt for the best quality beans to deliver a great cup of coffee for her customers. Then, she decided to try her hand at roasting. Due to the carefully selected beans and her roasting technique, customer numbers rapidly increased. The demand for her coffee was such that she opened “Le Trio Coffee Roasting Boutique”, while continuing to supply Vientiane’s restaurants and hotels. Patrons walking into Le Trio Coffee Roasting Boutique may be caught off guard, as the coffee boutique presents more than a café offering a selection of fine brews. The first thing you’ll notice when entering the door is the full coffee aroma, which gives the space an industrial atmosphere, with a bit of a studio working space for the owners, Nini and Mickaël Perier, as well as a

décor featuring recycled furniture and interesting decorative pieces. Further, the owners are happy to explain the art of coffee, which includes how to choose beans to meet your taste. Visitors can also purchase their favourite beans and ground coffee, as well as coffee making tools and equipment, barista tools, and other coffee-making items. Le Trio buys their coffee beans from a coffee farm in Pakxong on the Bolaven Plateau, known for its excellent soil and altitude for growing the plants, and located in southern Laos’ Champasak Province. Le Trio’s main objective is to support Lao coffee and work with the farmers, while closely adhering to Fair Trade. When it comes to being environmentally friendly, Le Trio ranks high on the list. They ask regular customers to return their empty 1-kg bags in good condition, which are reused up to five times. Le Trio also recycles the old bags to produce items from pencil cases to iPad covers. On top of this, they sell their beans’ silver skin for use as an organic fertilizer for growing plants. Laos’ Robusta beans and blends are gaining a global reputation, which Le Trio has proven through its sales. If you want more knowledge on this top-shelf coffee, stop for a chat with Nini at Le Trio Coffee Roasting Boutique, which adds even more to that great cup of coffee.

Phonesavanh “Nini” Vilivong

This event aims to be Laos’ showcase, underlining French dynamism and creativity as well as the appeal and openness of Laos to French business trends. Young French-Lao designer Nithaya Somsanith and visual artist Yiumsiri Vantanapindu will be the ambassadors of fashion, design and luxury, clichés of French excellence.

13 DEC / 19:00 - VIENTIANE Boun de Noêl + concert

T

he end of 2013 triggers the time when celebrations take place, and if you are looking for a nice eatery for a romantic evening or just to catch up with good friends, take a taste of five of Vientiane’s top restaurants uncovered by Visit Laos. You may have wondered why a small city such as Vientiane has many fine dining places. We did too, until we uncovered five restaurants you cannot miss, especially during the holiday season. Most are trendy, new, and have great reputations, while each presents its own identity, food concept, and atmosphere.

Aria “Aria Italian Culinary Arts” has become well known for its gourmet fusion Italian food, homemade pasta and gelato, as well as fine Italian wine. At Aria, all ingredients are carefully selected to ensure each dish delivers a special dining experience for all its guests. They import most of their ingredients from all over the world to bring out the true flavour of their menu items. For a pleasant dining experience, you can relax in the beautifully appointed salon, enjoy the atmosphere on the shaded terrace, or dine in comfort in the air-conditioned restaurant. Aria can also arrange private or VIP groups in their upstairs dining area. 8 Rue Francois Ngin, Ban Mixay. Open everyday from 11:30AM-11:30PM

Bistro22 For French cuisine lovers, don’t miss Bistro22. As its name implies, this French restaurant, in bistro style, serves traditional French food in a pleasant atmosphere with a great city-centre location and plenty of parking. Bistro22’s menu features a choice of good quality beef, with a salad and high quality steak topping the board. And, don’t forget to try the chef’s special chocolate fondant for dessert. Ban Kao Gnod, Samsenthai Road. Monday to friday: lunch from 11:00-14:00 & dinner from 18:15-22:00 Saturday: only dinner from 18:15-22:00

L’Adresse de Tinay Are you looking for a good French restaurant in the heart of Vientiane that offers a great atmosphere, excellent service and of course delicious food? Try L’Adresse de Tinay, which celebrated its second anniversary in September, and presents a menu offering cuisine created with high quality products from Nice and the Toulouse regions of southern France. L’Adresse’s dishes are filled with these top-shelf ingredients, such as its signature Whole Duck Breast topped with homemade Duck Foie Gras Terrine and White Truffle Oil from Cahors. You cannot go wrong with a meal and quality service at L’Addresse. Wat Ongteu (behind the temple) Parallel to Setthathirath Road open everyday except Sunday for lunch from 11.30–14.00 (except Saturday) and dinner from 18.30–22.00

I-Beam & Le Silapa Le Silapa first opened in 1999 at a previous location, and recently moved to its current home above I-Beam near Nam Phu in December 2012. Start at I-Beam by arousing your taste buds with aperitifs and complimentary canapés from 17.00-19.00. Then, move upstairs for a brilliant, luxurious dinner at Le Silapa. Le Silapa means “art” in Laos, and you can view Le Silapa’s menu as one of culinary art. At first, diners might view Le Silapa as a traditional French restaurant, but it serves a “twisted” French food, and is not limited by custom. For example, “Saumon mi-cuit” presents a good combination of medium cooked salmon served with bloody Mary aspic, a touch of wasabi and a side of fried river weed. Don’t forget to do a shot of vodka from the shelf, but for those with mellower tastes, you’ll find a good selection of wine from around the world to complement your meal. 17/1 Sethathirat Road. In front of Ong Teu Temple Open everyday from 11AM-11PM

Pimentón

If you are a meat lover, and looking for a trendy steakhouse, add Pimentón to your restaurant bucket list. Though Pimentón just opened, the eatery is already attracting attention and is a proven hit. Much of its success comes from the restaurant’s smooth operation and management under the watchful eyes of owners Serge and Regina. Pimentón serves a variety of Spanish dishes, many of which centre around wood-fired grilled meats such as open fire-grilled beef tenderloin and a large selection of authentic Spanish tapas. Pimentón also presents a great place to sit down for a nice glass of wine and enjoy a variety of tapas such as Montadito of braised pork belly with chimichurry sauce. Apart from steak and tapas, you can enjoy paella at the restaurant. You can also delve into a solid selection of Spanish cheese.

5 Nokeoukoumane Road, Open Monday-Saturday from 11AM-11PM

TAEC

A Mandatory Stop in Luang Prabang

n your next trip to the former royal capital O of Laos, be sure to visit Luang Prabang’s Traditional Arts & Ethnology Centre (TAEC).

Housed in a heritage building on Mount Phousi, the centre provides opportunities to learn about the various cultures of Laos, buy Fair Trade handicrafts at the TAEC shop, and enjoy a delicious meal in the lush gardens of Le Patio Café. Since it opened in 2007, TAEC has dedicated its work and exhibits to the ethnic minority cultures of Laos. The permanent exhibit emphasizes the distinct characteristics of several ethnic groups living in northern Laos. Textiles and clothing highlight the displays, which feature items produced and worn by the Akha, Hmong, Khmu, Mien, Tai Dam, and Tai Lue. Basketry and jewellery are also on show. Over the years, TAEC’s temporary exhibits have presented various themes for visitors. The first explored the religious customs of the Kim Mun, or Lanten, and Iu Mien groups living in Luang Nam Tha Province. Video and photographs captured the ordination rites that every male from these groups is expected to undertake. Wedding ceremonies held by various ethnic groups were featured in the last temporary exhibit, with prominently displayed wedding costumes, jewellery, and dowry items highlighting the presentation. Life stories of couples belonging to different ethnic groups added a degree of intimacy to the exhibit, enabling visitors to connect with the people in the photo shots. The current exhibit, “Carving a Community: The Katu People,” opened this year on 20 September. Documenting the cultural traditions of this | VISIT LAOS MAGAZINE 48

group, who reside in southern Laos, the exhibit delivers a groundbreaking event for TAEC, with the carved decorations of the Katu communal house attracting special interest. Traditionally, the Katu consider their meetinghouses as the heart of their villages, where members of the community gather to carry out important rites. A video of annual rituals, a wedding ceremony, and daily activities allow visitors to witness the life of the Katu. The exhibit will be on display until September 2014. The exhibition’s Curator Linda S. McIntosh, PhD, and chair of TAEC’s Board of Advisors, has conducted field research in Laos and neighbouring countries since 1998. She has overseen exhibits on the material culture and society of Southeast Asian people residing in Seattle, Bangkok, and Luang Prabang. Funded by a grant from the US Ambassador’s Fund for Cultural Preservation, TAEC has collaborated with the Institute of Anthropology and Religion of the Lao PDR, the University of Gothenburg-Sweden, and the Vietnam Museum of Ethnology to conduct research and present this exhibit on the culture and lifestyle of the little-known group. The exhibit combines research from renowned scholars from these international institutions, which was carried out over the past 20 years, including fieldwork by TAEC earlier in 2013. TAEC is open Tuesday – Sunday from 09.00 – 18.00pm (closed Mondays). Admission is LAK 25,000 per person and free for Lao citizens. Le Patio Café Luang Prabang

By Linda S. McIntosh, PhD in Luang Prabang’s Traditional Arts & Ethnology Centre, is a sister restaurant of the famed L’elephant group founded by Yannick and Gilles Vautrin 10 years ago. Located

Unlike classic Lao cuisine, ethnic minorities do not flavour their dishes with fish sauce, fermented fish dips, and salt. Rather, they perk up their meals with herbs, spices, and fermented soybeans, and the cooking process brings out the raw ingredients’ natural tastes. For example, the sweetness of Tai Lue stir-fried minced pork and carrots depends on the carrot’s sweetness. I tried Tai Dam stew and roasted tomato dip with steamed vegetables. This stew differs from the traditional Lao version, as the Tai Dam roast the rice and then grind it into a powder before adding it to the kettle, and a fermented soybean dip is rarely presented with Lao meals. Tai Lue cooks also use fermented soybeans, when cooking other menu items such as fried rice. As they live in forests, ethnic minority cooks rely on aromatic spices and herbs for different dishes. In the Khmu salad, the sharpness of fresh ginger and other herbs complement the blanched vegetables, while white sesame seeds add a little crunch. A local variety of Sichuan pepper adds heat to Akha meatballs, as this group’s villages have rights to specific areas in the forest to collect pepper pods and other spices for personal consumption and trade. Food prepared by various northern Laos ethnic groups present very flavourful dishes, and a welcome change from most Lao dishes offered in town. Still, Le Patio Café’s menu also lists baguette sandwiches, quiches, and fruit pastries to sate your appetite, and a variety of hot and cold drinks to quench your thirst. To enjoy great ethnic dishes during your Lung Prabang stay or after a visit to the Traditional Arts & Ethnology Centre, Le Patio Café opens the door to an authentic northern Lao meal.

Savan Vegas Moves Ahead By Bernie Rosenbloom

here’s always something new going on at Savan Vegas Hotel and Entertainment Complex in Savannakhet, T Laos’ second most visited province. From ongoing resort developments and promotions to contributing to the community, Savan Vegas continues to create fresh ideas. I first visited Savan Vegas in November 2009, less than a year after it opened, having already inspected the low-end border casinos in Cambodia that catered to Thais. As such, I had no great expectations when I decided to drop into Laos’ top entertainment complex. Not only did the property surpass the visions swirling in my head, it blew my mind. It really compared to a small but classy Las Vegas resort. Since then, the hotel and casino have evolved into one of Laos’ top tourist attractions, pulling in an average of 4,000 gamers everyday, according to the complex’s General Manager Mike Gore. Multiply that by 365 and you get close to 1.5 million people, more than half the nation’s total arrivals, though of course many stay for more than a day. So what’s new to keep attracting these high-spending hordes? For starters, the hotel recently reconfigured its rooms and has its eyes set on more. “Savan Vegas currently has 482 rooms. This number is down from our peak of 499 rooms because we decided to combine some of the rooms to provide additional high-end suites to accommodate big money guests,” Mr Gore said, adding, “Most weekends we are at 100 per cent occupancy. Because of the success we’ve experienced to date we currently are working on plans to build a tower which will add approximately 400 more rooms to our total.” Then there’s the constant flow of new promotions and events. So far in 2013, Savan Vegas has hosted the Moon Cake festival, while tossing in THB 1,000 in free slot play; the first “Ultimate Savan Vegas Fight Night”; and the Savan Vegas Friendship Golf Tournament. On top of this, they continue to roll out special flight and transportation packages, with or with out rooms and free breakfasts, for their main market in north-eastern Thailand as well as Bangkok, Vientiane and beyond. This may sound like hardcore business, but Savan Vegas has a soft side too; they are dedicated to the community as seen in their corporate social responsibility programmes and human resource development initiatives. The resort is involved in more than 15 community projects. They just completed one of the most advanced schools in Laos in Nongdeune Village, and in January this year, Savan Vegas donated LAK 50,000,000 for the organization of the 7th Savannakhet Mass Sports Games. “We are very keen to contribute further to Lao tourism“, Mr Gore said. “One of our strengths as a business is that we provide fully comprehensive training to international standards as we believe that capacity building for the local community is of vital importance to its future success as well as to our business”. So, what’s new at Savan Vegas Hotel and Entertainment Complex? Just about everything gamers, tourists, and the community wants.

Vat Phou Salao Champasak’s New View

By Bounfaeng Phaymanivong

isitors to Champasak Province’s capital Pakxe V searching for the perfect vantage point to view the surrounding vista can now head to the

newly built Vat Phou Salao Temple. The temple, located on the slopes of Salao Hill in Phonthong District, features a giant golden Buddha, which you can see from the heart of Pakxe Town. Recently, I travelled with a media group to check out the preparations for November’s Vat Phou Festival, as well as to visit Vat Phou Salao for the first time. Champasak Province presents a wealth of historical, cultural and natural attractions, the most well known being the UNESCO World Heritage site, Vat Phou, Khone Phapheng Waterfall, and Siphandon (4,000 Islands), but so far, this temple had eluded me. Visitors can easily access Vat Phou Salao Temple from Pakxe Town. Our minibus took about 15 minutes to cross the Mekong Bridge from Pakxe to Phonthong District, and reach the temple at the top of Salao Hill. For another easy travel option, simply drive up Salao Hill’s concrete road in a car or on a motor scooter to the top. The well-fit can walk, but the journey requires a demanding hike, especially in the heat of the day, but the reward is well-worth the climb. The Abbot Sithon Thammakhan at Phonthong District’s Vat Phou explained that Vat Phou Salao Temple’s construction began in 2010, after receiving authorisation from the provincial Buddhist Fellowship Organisation. He continued, “Venerable Monk Bounthong Vipraxay, more commonly known as Ajaan Xangon, a highly respected monk in Laos, was the man behind the construction of Vat Phou Salao.”

ccording to Abbot Sithon, the temple was built as a meditation centre, but also aims to A entice visitors who wish to view the outstanding landscape of Pakxe District. “The giant Buddha will soon be completed,” he said. “It is marvellously situated on a promontory and you can see it from downtown Pakxe, giving the city a landmark in the distance.” Ajaan Xangon not only founded the temple, but also led the fundraising. Unfortunately he passed away late in 2012, before he could see his vision become reality. His body remained at the temple until a proper funeral ritual could take place. However, Abbot Sithon remains determined to complete Ajaan Xangon’s work. “Construction of the temple and other facilities will continue

until the work is finished,” he said. “But, more contributions from donors are needed to ensure the completion of (the temple’s) important projects.” Visitors are not required to pay an entrance fee, but they can make donations, small or large, to help fund the construction of accommodation and other facilities. More than 1,250 Buddha images look out from the hillside, creating a pleasant place for people to worship at the temple, and an extremely nice home for the monks. For devotees or tourists who just want to get an idea of the lay of the land, Vat Phou Salao presents the perfect place to visit, and should certainly be included on any Pakxe and Champasak itinerary.
