各地へのアクセス方法 By bus バス Northern Bus Station : about 2km northwest of the centre, serves all points north of Vang Vieng, including China, and has some buses to Vietnam.The Southern Bus Station or Dong Dok Bus Station is 9km out of town and serves everywhere south. By bus バス The Northern Bus Station is the main departure point. Buses bound for Luang Prabang depart regularly throughout the day. The air-con buses are comfortable for the long journey while the VIP buses provide an extra space, a snack and a bottle of water. Normally bus takes 10-12 hours. Any bus bound for Luang Prabang can drop you off in Vang Vieng, though you pay the same ticket price as if you were going all the way. Another option is to book a mini-bus ticket from a travel agency. It takes 2-4 hours less. 北バスステーションが主要出発点。ルアンパバーン方面行きのバスは1日を通して出ている。長旅ならエアコンバスが快適。VIPバスは他のバスに比べ多少スペースに余裕がありお菓子と水が付く。ノーマルバスは所要時間10～12時間。ルアンパバーン方面のバスならどれでもバンビエンで途中下車可能（ただし途中下車しても払い戻しはなし）。旅行代理店でミニバスのチケットを購入する方法もある。公共バスよりは２～4時間ほど早く到着できる。

That Luang A symbol of Laos’s nationhood and the country’s most sacred Buddhist monument, That Luang was built in the 16th century under the rule of King Setthathirat. A symbol of the main stupa appears on the country’s national seal. Wat Sisaket The only temple in Vientiane to survive the sacking of the city by the Siamese in 1828, Wat Sisaket is the oldest and considered by many to be the most interesting of the Laotian temples. Wat Ho Phakeo This temple was built in 1565 as a royal chapel and repository for the celebrated statue of the Emerald Buddha, which the Laotians had seized from Northern Thailand in 1551. The statue remained in the temple until 1778, when the Thais invaded and recaptured it, taking it to Bangkok. The temple was destroyed in 1828-1829 during the Thai sacking of Vientiane; rebuilt in 1936; and restored again in 1993. Inspired by a 19th century Bangkok temple style, it is renowned throughout Southeast Asia for its intrinsic value to Buddhist art. That Dam Known as the ‘Black Stupa’, many locals believe this mythological structure was once inhabited by a sevenheaded dragon (now dormant) that stood to protect the city from the threat of the Siamese. Another tale that does the rounds says that the gold that once graced the surface was taken when the Siamese army ransacked Vientiane back in 1828. Patuxai Patuxai (literally Victory Gate or Gate of Triumph), formerly the Anousavary or Anousavari Monument, is situated in the centre of Vientiane. Built between 1962 and 1968, the Laotians built it as a mark of respect for all those who fought in the struggle for independence from the French. Buddha Park (Xieng Khuan) 24km south of Vientiane, Buddha Park is in a field near the Mekong River. The park, as its name would suggest, is littered with religious sculptures and was built in 1958 by the philosopher Bunleua Sulilat who famously combined Buddhist and Hindu philosophy, mythology and iconography. am-Ngum Dam in Memory Thalat, Vientiane Province

Over the years, when someone asking “where should we go for a relaxing time and some fish”, mostly the answer was “Let’s go to the Dam site for a meal of fish”. “The Dam” meant the Nam Ngum Dam, a hydropower electricity dam located some 90 kilometres north of Vientiane Capital. 昔も今でも、リラックスできて魚釣りができるとこってどこかな？と誰かに聞かれると、ほとんどの場合「じゃあダムに魚食べに行こう！」と答える。つまりはヴィエンチャンから北へ90km地点に位置する、発電所があるナムグムダムのことだ。

These days the Nam Ngum Dam is officially known as “Nam Ngum 1” as two more hydropower dams are currently under construction on the same river. The Nam Ngum Dam was initially built in order to block the flow of Nam Ngum River that originated from its sources in Xiengkhuang Province. The first phase of construction started in 1968 and ended in 1976 with assistance provided by various countries. 現在ナムグムダムは“ナムグム１”として知られており、その他2箇所の水力発電ダムが現在建設中だ。ナムグムダムはシェンクワン県が源流のナムグム川からの流れを堰きとめるために建てられたものだ。建設の第一フェーズは1968年に開始し、様々な国からの援助で 1976年に完成した。

Over the past ten years, I have shared the experience of many other people, enjoying the trip to Nam Ngum Dam. I am in love with the attractive scenery made up of so much natural forest and seen from so far away; this cheers me up every time I am there. Beside the beautiful forest, there is the panoramic view of the huge lake itself. This vast pond attracts many visitors who share the obsession with such a beautiful perspective. 過去10年の間、私も例にもれず、遠くから望むことのできる自然の森の景色に魅入られ、ナムグムダムへ遊びに行くことを好み、その素晴らしい景色は行く度に私を元気付けてくれた。美しい森に加え、巨大な湖とも比較できるほどの広大な池の眺めは、こだわりの風景愛好家を惹きつけてきた。

Especially during a sunset or when the sunlight catches the waves, a beautiful shiny surface is created on the water like a painting done by a famous painter. The way of life of the local people living near the dam can also be seen in its picturesque perspective which again fascinates me, especially the fishing activity both upstream and downstream of the dam. “思い出のナムグムダム”

the old times, many kinds of fish could easily be found in the river and the fish caught by the local people were sold in the Thalat Market as well as from the “fish shop” raft at the dam site. The fish available in this area is delicious with a good smell and sweet taste, no matter how you cook them. My favourite item on the menu is the local sour soup (Kaengsom Pa), combined with local herbs (phak phaeo and phak samek), presenting the unique characteristic of the Upstream Dam Sour Fish Soup (Keangsom Pa Nakheuan). 特に、夕陽が沈み湖とぶつかりあうその時は、夕陽がきらきらと水面を照らし、まるで著名な画家の作品かのように美しい光景を作り出す。また、ダム周辺に住んでいる地元の人々の暮らし、特にダムの上流・下流で魚を捕まえている人々の姿がまるで絵画のように目にすることができ、私はその景色に魅了される。昔は地元の人々が獲った様々な種類の魚がターラート市場やダムに浮かぶいかだで売られているのをよく見かけたものだ。この地域で獲れる魚はどのように料理しても、味も香りも良くとてもおいしかった。私のお気に入りの料理は、ダム上流の魚を使った酸味のあるスープ（ゲーンソムパーナクアン）独特の特徴である、地元でとれるハーブ（パックペオとパックサメック）を使ったローカルスタイルの酸味のあるスープ（ゲーンソムパー）だ。

At the present time, catching large fish is hardly possible in this area. This might be cause by the fact that nature has not been able to respond to the high demand of the people visiting Thalat and the Nam Ngum Dam, as well as the high fish consumption demanded by the large population in Vientiane Capital. No matter in which direction society or the people’s livelihood changes as a consequence of development, the Nam Ngum Dam will still maintain its natural charm - this will never fade away. Whenever I have a chance to visit this place, past memories always come quickly to mind. If you have some time to spare, please come and visit - and see if you will have the same feeling as I do. I will never forget Nam Ngum Dam. 現在このエリアでは大きな魚が獲れる事は少なくなった。これはターラートやナムグムダムを訪れる人々の高い需要に、自然が対応しきれなくなったことが原因だろう。また、ヴィエンチャン都など人口の多い都市による魚の消費量の増加も原因と見られる。社会や人々の生活が、開発に伴いどの方向に向かって変化していくかに関わらず、ナムグムダムは未だその自然の特性を維持し、失っていない。あの場所に行くときはいつでも、以前の思い出が脳裏に蘇る。もしチャンスがあれば、私と同じ様な気分になるかどうか、確かめに是非足を運んで欲しい。

he excitement of the celebrations of Pimai, the Lao New Year in the fifth month of the Lao calendar (mid-April), has now calmed down. According to the Hit Sipsong Khong sipsee, the Book of 12 festivals and 14 traditions of Laos, the sixth month is devoted to the spirits. People pay homage to the foundation pillars and the major spirit houses of their towns and villages, and ask for protection by bringing offerings of food to the protectors. Moreover, an important Buddhist festival is held in the sixth month. It is Boun Visakha Bouca, the Commemoration of the Birth, Enlightenment and Death of Lord Buddha (this year it falls on June 4). In the evening, devotees participate in candlelit processions around the Viharn, the main sanctuary of the temple in their village. Then, it is time to prepare for the cultivation season. However, it is still the dry season. The sun continues to scorch the earth and the heat is more and more unbearable. Peasants must start to grow rice, especially sticky rice, the staple food of the Lao people. Rice cultivation needs a lot of water. So the people must call for rain by resorting to the age-old tradition of Boun Bangfai, the Rocket Festival. (Bangfai means tube of fire.) Rockets are commissioned by districts and villages, by individual families or by commercial enterprises. The rockets are first brought in a procession to the spirit house of the village to be presented to the local protector to request a successful launching, good rain and abundant harvest. Then, they are paraded from house to house amidst the sounds of chants, drums and gongs. At each house alcohol flows, uninterrupted. Before the rockets get to the launching pad, the participants are, of course fairly tipsy. The launching pad consists of scaffolding made up of tree trunks or bamboo and usually resting on a big tall tree located on the edge of the village, mostly next to the temple. Bangfai have to queue at the launching pad. Before being fired each rocket must be “washed”. That means the powder has to be humidified and softened, otherwise, the rocket would explode immediately. Each rocket specialist has his own recipe for the washing of the rocket. When the rocket is fired, the powder in the front is designed to burns first and the tail then burns last. So, as the fuse is lit, the whole gathered assembly holds its breath. Fire or not fire? Fly or not fly? The team responsible for the rocket is on the scaffolding, helping it with erotic gestures. And, when the rocket lifts up in a cloud of smoke, a huge hooray resounds. Hundreds of eyes follow its trajectory until it disappears over the horizon. Officials posted in the landing area measure how far it has gone and communicate the results to the organizers. At the end of the festival awards are presented to the winners. If many Bangfai have been successfully fired, the rain will generously fall on the earth and the harvest will be bountiful.

ラオス歴の5月（4月中旬）のピーマイ（ラオス正月）祝いの大騒ぎがようやく鎮まった。ラオスの12の祭りと14の伝統についての書籍、『ヒットスィップソンコンスィップスィー（Hit Sipsong Khong sipsee）』によると、６月は精霊に祈りを捧げる月だという。人々は町や村の礎となる柱や、主要な精霊の家に食物をお供えし、御加護を請い祈る。また、６月にはある重要な仏教行事が行われる。それはヴィサカブカ祭り（仏誕節）といい、今年は６月４日であった。その日の夕方には多くの信者が、Viharnという寺院の本殿を蝋燭を持って行進する。その後はまだ乾季ではあるが収穫の準備の季節となる。太陽は大地を照らし続け、熱さはますます耐え難いものとなってくる。農家たちは稲、特にラオスの人々の主食となるもち米の稲を植え始める。稲の栽培には多くの水が必要となる。そのため彼らはバンファイ祭り、つまりロケット祭りという昔からの伝統的な方法で雨乞いをする必要がある。ロケットは各郡、村あるいは各家庭や会社から託される。ロケットはまず村の精霊の住む家へ行進しながら運ばれ、地元の保護者へ捧げられ、祭りの成功、降雨、豊作を願う。そして村人たちによる歌や太鼓、銅鑼の音に囲まれながら家から家まで行進していく。各家庭で絶え間なくお酒を飲むため、ロケットが発射台に到着するまでに、参加者はかなり酔っ払っているのは言うまでもない。ロケット発射台は木の幹や竹で作られた足場もついており、たいていは寺の隣など村の端にある大きく背の高い木の上に設置される。バンファイ（ロケット）は発射台の上に並べられるが、各ロケットは点火の前に“洗わ”なければならない。これは、火薬を湿らせて柔らかくしないと、ロケットがすぐに爆発してしまうからだ。職人はそれぞれ独自にロケットを洗う方法を持っている。ロケットに点火されると、前方の火薬に先に火が付き、それから最後に後方が燃える。ヒューズが点滅するように、全体の組立は形を残したままだ。ロケット担当するチームは、足場の上に立ち、エロティックなジェスチャーなどをしてロケットの打ち上げを援護する。そしてロケットが雲や煙の中へと打ち上げられると大きな歓声があがる。ロケットが地平線に消えて見えなくなるまで、多くの観客がその軌跡を見つめる。到着場に配置された係員はどれだけ飛んだかを測定し、祭りの最後に祭り運営者と結果を協議し、優勝者を表彰する。多くのロケットがうまく発射されれば、雨に恵まれ、豊作となるだろう、と信じられている。

Children’s Day Tigerhead Drinking Water leads to happiness 2012

he second annual celebration of Children’s Day under the title of ‘Tigerhead Drinking Water leads to happiness 2012’ was held from 1-2 June 2012 at Lao ITECC, Vientiane Capital and was hosted by the Ministry of Education, in cooperation with Tigerhead Drinking Water. The event aimed to encourage and offer an opportunity for young primary school children to show their talents through the Traditional Dance Competition. This year there were 30 schools participating in the competition. Additionally, in order to raise awareness about protection of the environment, a Drawing and Painting Competition with the theme “Save the Environment, Save the World” was organised. Hundreds of children showed great interest and enrolled in the competition. All the games and activities during the festival were free of charge.

子どもの日タイガーヘッド飲料水で２０１２年を幸せに！ “タイガーヘッド飲料水で２０１２年を幸せに”と題した子どもの日記念イベントの第二回目が、２０１２年６月１・２日にヴィエンチャンのITECCで、タイガーヘッド飲料水の協力のもと教育省の主催で開催された。同イベントは伝統舞踊コンテストを通して小学生たちに彼らの才能を見出す機会を与えることを目的とし、今年は３０校の学校がコンテストに参加した。また、環境汚染に関する意識向上のため、“環境を守ろう、世界を守ろう”というテーマで絵画コンテストを行い、多くの児童がこぞって参加した。全イベントは参加無料で行われた。

Fête de la Musique 音楽祭

The ‘Fête de la Musique’ has been organised in June of each year since 2003, offering an opportunity for exchanges between professional and amateur musicians and anyone who loves music and wants to show their talent on stage. This year, the highlight of the festival was ‘Success’, an electro-rock music band from France, featured with 24 other bands performing on three different stages in Vientiane, including the French Institute, the National Circus and Khop Chai Deu restaurant.
