A quaint capital city that is anything but uninteresting--Vientiane is not dotted with museums or attractions that you would normally see in other capitals. Aside from ancient temples and French colonial architectures, the charm of Vientiane lies in the simplicity of lifestyle and unpretentious approach to life. It would be wrong to brand Vientiane as a sleepy town because with each passing day, entertainment facilities sprout like mushrooms making the city vibrantly colorful. The attractions of Vientiane, after it was officially declared a capital city 450 years ago, are an interesting blend of history and modernity that can be observed in their art scenes, pubs and bars, dining and local fashion.

Today, the city is no longer a mere “en-route” destination as it has grown into a city with its own distinctive style. Though it is a capital city, it is still very far from the hustle and bustle. Tourism may be growing here but it is definitely not mass tourism; hospitality services is a blend of local lifestyle, compromising and unpretentious. To get yourself “immersed” into Vientiane, take a leisurely str oll or r ent a b i k e , g o i n to l i ttl e a l l e y w a ys in or der t o discover the hidden beauty. Don’t forget to visit the Mekong River banks, buy a bottle of “Lao beer” and drink away ‘til sundown! It’s fantastic, to say the least.

Anniversary
ヴィエンチャン遷都450周年記念 A grand event celebrating the 450th anniversary of Vientiane as capital city was held last November 15-21, 2010. It has been 450 years since King Sayasetthathirath moved the capital of the Lane Xang Kingdom from Luang Prabang to Vientiane in 1560. Several parades involving ministries and provincial departments from across the country will depict the traditions and culture of a specific region. These activities will commemorate the origin, tradition and growth of Vientiane.The slogan “6S” was officially launched: 1SaNgob (Secure), 2Savang (Lighted), 3Sa-ad (Clean), 4Sikhiao (Green), 5Sivilay (Civilized) and 6Sa-ne (Charm). The new definition of Vientiane is reflected the new era of Laos. ヴィエンチャン遷都450周年を祝う記念行事が2010年11月15日～21日までの7日間ヴィエンチャン特別 市で過去最大規模で行われた。今年はランサーン王国のセタティラート王が1560年にルアンパバーン からヴィエンチャンに遷都してからちょうど450年。様々なパレードが行事が行われ、 ラオスの人々にとっ てはヴィエンチャンの起源、伝統や変遷を再確認するチャンスとなった。公式に発表されたスローガン は“6S”。1．SaNgob：安全2.Savang：3.Sa-ad：清潔 4.Sikhiao：緑化 5.Sivilay：文明的 6.Sa-ne：魅力。

Start a new day right with a sumptuous breakfast and a delicious cup of coffee. I was particularly happy with a restaurant called “Le Banneton” (Map : M-5) which is owned and operated by Cedric Marchand and Bernard Pricco. They closely oversee the daily production and create their own menu. The concept is to create a traditional crafted French bakery with slow food attitude; all ingredients used are of the highest quality whether they are the cocoa chocolate, butter and baking flour from France. If you happen to visit Vientiane, do stop by the restaurant and pick a chair on the terrace (which are occupied most of the time), then order pure butter croissant served with a black coffee. Then sit back, relax and enjoy the slow pace of early morning Vientiane. 気持ちのいい1日の始まりには何といってもおいしいコーヒーと贅沢な朝食が欠かせない。お勧めはセド リックさんというフランス人オーナーが経営しているカフェ“Le Banneton（バントン）”。毎日自分でパンの 出来具合やメニューをチェックしている。 コンセプトはスローな雰囲気の伝統的フレンチベーカリー。使 用する材料は全て品質にこだわり、チョコレート、バター、小麦粉等はフランスから取り寄せている。ヴィ エンチャンを訪れたら是非この店に立ち寄って、 ブラックコーヒーとバタークロワッサンをオーダーして みて。 テラス席でゆったりと椅子に寄りかかってヴィエンチャンのスローペースな早朝を堪能できるはず。

Run by the Friends International or Peuan Mit, a sustainable street children program in Lao PDR, Makphet (means chilli in Laos; Map : M-5) is a non-profit restaurant which supports young children who are interested in learning the art of cooking and restaurant management. The modern Lao cuisine is just incredible as attention is given to ingredients and flavours. Food is creatively presented and served for a delightful treat. The creativity is not limited to food creation as it includes decorations and staff uniform as well. After eating, don’t forget to visit the souvenir shop “Noi Noi” which is the creative craft made from parents. Our favourite menu was the “Laap tao hou” a little spicy tofu salad and “Steak Lao” pan seared Lao whisky marinated beef fillet. Makphet（ラオス語で唐辛子の意味）はFriends Internationalというストリートチルドレン救済プロジェクトを 行っている団体が経営する非営利レストラン。 ストリートチルドレンに対して調理やレストラン経営の学習の サポートを行っている。 ここで提供されるモダンラオス料理は味も盛り付けも素晴らしく、料理だけでなくスタ ッフのユニフォームや内装にもこだわりが感じられる。食事の後には併設されたお土産ショップに立ち寄る のも忘れずに。 ここで販売されている様々なかわいらしいアーティスティック商品も家庭環境に苦しむ女性援 助に役立っている。私たちのお気に入りのメニューはちょっぴりスパイシーな豆腐サラダ“ラープタオフー”と ラオスウィスキーでマリネされたビーフフィレ肉を使用した“ステーキラオ”。

A french restaurant worth trying out is “La Signature” (Map : M-5), located at the Ansara Hotel. Headed by talented young chef Jean-Marie Stainmesse who possesses extensive experience from hotels worldwide, La Signature pays great attention to details and creativity with all decorative items hand-picked by the hotel owners. Many ingredients are flown in from France and other places and every dish is a show of imaginative presentation. The entrée Forestiere Raviolis with Mushroom surprised me with a well-mixed snail and Cep in parsley sauce. You shouldn’t miss the dessert here to add a perfect ‘finale’ to the dinner. I heard that the chef who appeared to have so much energy has created new menus, if you are looking for a memorable dining experience in Vientiane, fail not to try out this restaurant. ヴィエンチャンにいくつかあるフレンチレストランのうちの一つ、Ansara Hotel内にある“La Signature”は是非試 してみる価値有り。世界中のホテルで訓練を受けた経験を持つ若干２９歳の有能なフレンチシェフ、Jean Marie Stainmesse氏が創り出す料理の味はどんな味覚の持ち主にも 保証できるほどの素晴らしさ。オーナー自ら 持ち込んだ店内の装飾も、 どれほど詳細まで気を配っているか感じ取れる。食材もフランスから空輸し、食器に もこだわっている。私が前菜に注文したのは「Entrée Forestiere Raviolis with Mushroom Cep（セップ茸の森の ラビオリ）」。エスカルゴとセップ茸が絶妙にミックスされた一品。 メインの鴨肉もとても柔らかく美味。シェフに よるとこの鴨肉もフランスからの輸入物で、皮の部分だけ少し焦げ目をつける程度に焼いているため、口に入 れた時に脂分が溶けてサクッとした食感になるのだという。パーフェクトなディナーの締めくくりとして忘れては いけないのがデザート。シェフが考案したとっておきのメニューを常時用意している。ヴィエンチャンで記憶に 残るディナーを過ごしたいのなら、La Signatureは外せない一軒。

I find the local costume very appealing and the age-old culture of wearing “Sin” (a Lao tube skirt) pretty much intact. The young Laotian girls nowadays wear modernized version of the “Sin” which quickly became fashionable. Today’s “Sin” has been adapted to allow for greater convenience and once worn with small shirts and high heels,the young Loatian girls look extremely eye-catching. “Sin” now costs around USD 5 per piece right up to USD 600 per piece.

シン（ラオスの民族衣装、筒状になったスカート）を身に着ける古くからの文化が未だ無傷で残ってい るこの街の様子を見ると、その土地特有の伝統的な衣装の魅力に気づかされる。若いラオス女性は現 代風にアレンジされたファッショナブルなシンを身に着けている。彼女たちが細身のシャツとハイヒー ルをあわせてシンを着こなす姿はとても魅力的で街行く人々の目を惹いて止まない。安いものは5ドル から、高いものだと600ドルぐらいのものまである。

Floating Lunch 船上ランチ Roughly 20 km outside of Vientiane on route 10, stands the Nam Ngum Lake. Here are numerous floating restaurants which are highly popular amongst the locals, It is certainly a fantastic way to enjoy a sumptuous meal while watching a way of life along the river banks. You can also find Karaoke if you want to try out singing. Top the whole experience off by ordering a dish of freshly caught river fish, so much in tune with the river stream and sound of motor boats. ヴィエンチャン中心部から10号線を20km行った所にナムグム湖がある。 この辺りに は船上レストランが数軒並んでおりいつも地元民で賑わっている。川岸沿いの景色 や生活風景を眺めながら豪華な食事を味わえる。歌いたい気分の時はカラオケも 有り。獲れたての新鮮な魚は外せない一品。川の流れとボートのモーター音が調和 してなんともいえないゆったりとした時間が過ごせる。
Wild Orchid trek
原生蘭トレッキング The orchid trek in Phou Khao Khouay (mainly Tad Xay, but also Tad Leuk). This is usually a day’s tour, but can be extended to a two-day tour if you feel like breathing in nature more. If at Tad Xay, Ban Hatkhai is the starting point, with local guides and a foreign expert (French and English speaking) to explain the astonishing wealth of orchids in this PKK NPA. Though large art museums cannot be found in Vientiane, one can see art scenes scattered everywhere. For the art film enthusiasts, there is a small theatre in the French Cultural Center which screens a regular programme of French and Asian films.There are also internet, library, restaurant-café and art exhibition which are being held throughout the year. 各地へのアクセス方法 By bus バス Northern Bus Station : about 2km northwest of the centre, serves all points north of Vang Vieng, including China, and has some buses to Vietnam.The Southern Bus Station or Dong Dok Bus Station is 9km out of town and serves everywhere south. ビエンチャンからルアンパバーンまでの行き方 By plane 飛行機 Lao Airline, 2 or 3 times a day, 40 minutes. ラオス航空、２～３便/日 所要時間約40分
By bus バス The Northern Bus Station is the main departure point. Buses bound for Luang Prabang depart regularly throughout the day. The air-con buses are comfortable for the long journey while the VIP buses provide an extra space, a snack and a bottle of water. Normally bus takes 10-12 hours. Any bus bound for Luang Prabang can drop you off in Vang Vieng, though you pay the same ticket price as if you were going all the way. Another option is to book a mini-bus ticket from a travel agency. It takes 2-4 hours less. 北バスステーションが主要出発点。ルアンパバーン方面行きのバスは1日を通して出ている。長旅ならエアコンバスが快適。VIPバ スは他のバスに比べ多少スペースに余裕がありお菓子と水が付く。 ノーマルバスは所要時間10～12時間。ルアンパバーン方面の バスならどれでもバンビエンで途中下車可能（ただし途中下車しても払い戻しはなし）。旅行代理店でミニバスのチケットを購入 する方法もある。公共バスよりは２～4時間ほど早く到着できる。

That Luang A symbol of Laos’s nationhood and the country’s most sacred Buddhist monument, That Luang was built in the 16th century under the rule of King Setthathirat. A symbol of the main stupa appears on the country’s national seal. Wat Sisaket The only temple in Vientiane to survive the sacking of the city by the Siamese in 1828, Wat Sisaket is the oldest and considered by many to be the most interesting of the Laotian temples. Wat Ho Phakeo This temple was built in 1565 as a royal chapel and repository for the celebrated statue of the Emerald Buddha, which the Laotians had seized from Northern Thailand in 1551. The statue remained in the temple until 1778, when the Thais invaded and recaptured it, taking it to Bangkok. The temple was destroyed in 1828-1829 during the Thai sacking of Vientiane; rebuilt in 1936; and restored again in 1993. Inspired by a 19th century Bangkok temple style, it is renowned throughout Southeast Asia for its intrinsic value to Buddhist art. That Dam Known as the ‘Black Stupa’, many locals believe this mythological structure was once inhabited by a seven-headed dragon (now dormant) that stood to protect the city from the threat of the Siamese. Another tale that does the rounds says that the gold that once graced the surface was taken when the Siamese army ransacked Vientiane back in 1828. Patuxai Patuxai (literally Victory Gate or Gate of Triumph), formerly the Anousavary or Anousavari Monument, is situated in the centre of Vientiane. Built between 1962 and 1968, the Laotians built it as a mark of respect for all those who fought in the struggle for independence from the French. Buddha Park (Xieng Khuan) 24km south of Vientiane, Buddha Park is in a field near the Mekong River. The park, as its name would suggest, is littered with religious sculptures and was built in 1958 by the philosopher Bunleua Sulilat who famously combined Buddhist and Hindu philosophy, mythology and iconography. The town is famous for its karst hill landscape along Nam Song, water adventures and the nightlife under the stars, even the rain.Try Tubing.
