SCRANTON JAZZ FESTIVAL

TORCHLIGHT PARADE & FIREWORKS

The Scranton St. Patrick’s Parade is the largest annual celebration in Lackawanna County. Since 1962, the St. Patrick’s Parade Day Association of Lackawanna County has conducted this nationally acclaimed parade the weekend before the Feast of St. Patrick (St. Patrick’s Day). “Parade Day,” as it’s known locally, is one of the largest St. Patrick’s parades in the country, regularly attracting 150,000 spectators. The parade boasts over 12,000 participants, including Irish groups and societies, bagpipers, high school and string bands, elaborate floats, Irish dancers, and much more! The festivities begin with a mass at St. Peter’s Cathedral, followed by the Brian P. Kelly 2 Mile Footrace, with the parade kicking off shortly thereafter. The parade route is marked in green and begins on Wyoming Avenue in front of St. Peter’s Cathedral, proceeds through the streets of downtown Scranton, and finishes in front of the Reviewing Stage on N Washington Avenue. Everyone is Irish on Parade Day!

25

Lackawanna County’s most unique festival only happens in two places in the world: The sister cities of Jessup, Pennsylvania, and Gubbio, Italy. Brought to Jessup in 1909, St. Ubaldo Day was a way for immigrants from Gubbio who largely settled in Jessup to feel connected to the home they left behind. For over 100 years, this celebration has brought thousands of spectators to Lackawanna County to join in the fun. This wonderful tradition, which takes place on the Saturday of Memorial Day weekend, is an exciting combination of color, culture, pride, and faith that the whole family will enjoy. While you are in town, be sure to check out the carnival that accompanies the St. Ubaldo festivities. You’ll find delicious homemade food, rides and games for the kids, and nightly entertainment. Experience St. Ubaldo once, and we bet you’ll be back year after year. 26

Photos by Linda Anelli

Mangia! One of Lackawanna County’s most delicious traditions is La Festa Italiana, held annually on Labor Day Weekend. The four-day celebration of culture, cuisine, and music brings together people of all ethnic backgrounds from near and far. “La Festa,” as the locals call it, attracts over 100,000 people annually to Courthouse Square in downtown Scranton. You can eat amazing Italian delicacies, cannoli, a wide variety of pizza, cannoli, homemade pasta dishes, and did we mention the incredible cannoli? La Festa Italiana isn’t just about the food — enjoy live entertainment, shopping, Sunday night fireworks, and you seriously have to try the cannoli!

27

Step Right Up Lackawanna County’s newest festival combines its rich history, blend of cultures, and delicious ethnic cuisine, with carnival amusements, games, live entertainment, and waterslides. The Lackawanna County Heritage Fair, May 27-31, showcases the best of what Lackawanna County has to offer, at the affordable entrance price of just $10. Held at Montage Mountain Resorts, your ticket gets you full access to their waterpark, along with all the rides you can handle inside the fairgrounds. Different from an agricultural fair, the Lackawanna County version centers its focus on the area’s heritage and uses interactive displays, local artisans, and educational demonstrations to accomplish that mission. There’s something for the whole family to enjoy at the Lackawanna County Heritage Fair.

28

Frozen Fun When State Street is lined with massive ice sculptures and live performers on every corner, you know it’s time for the Clarks Summit Festival of Ice. This year’s event, being held February 14-16, will be themed ICEtendo and promises to bring frozen carvings of all your favorite video game characters. Admission and parking are free to this frigid celebration with plenty of opportunities to enjoy live bands, games, horse-drawn carriage rides, and a phenomenal parade. Year in and year out, regardless of theme, the Clarks Summit Festival of Ice brings an atmosphere of winter wonderment to Lackawanna County that you won’t want to miss.

29

Dining Attention foodies! One of Lackawanna County’s greatest strengths is the wide variety of delicious and diverse food. You will find homemade options from around the world at our veritable potpourri of family owned restaurants. From traditional Italian delicacies and world famous pizza, to gourmet ramen, and everything in between, your taste buds will be begging you to come back for more. Whatever your reason for visiting, always make sure to schedule a dinner break. Oh, and definitely save room for dessert.
