What to eat? Gastronomy on the Moquegua coast is enriched by marine products such as fish and shellfish. Emblematic dishes include chicharrón de pulpo (fried octopus), picante de mariscos (a shellfish stew of potato puree and chili with limpets and mussels) and soups such as chupín de pejesapo (clingfish) and shellfish aguadito. In the Andean region, the guinea pig is fried, or used in preparations such as picante y pepián de cuy (a stew with peanut sauce and chili). The Moquegua patasca (offal broth with mote corn and mint) and chupe de camarones (a shrimp soup with milk, eggs and oregano) are other common dishes. The region is also well-known for its breads and sweets; manjar blanco (blancmange), alfajor penco, guargüeros (a pastry) and dulce de membrillo (sweet quince). In addition to its famous wines and Piscos, liqueurs such as leche monja (nun’s milk) made from Pisco, egg and lemon and chimbango (made from figs) are consumed in Moquegua.

What to buy? Accustomed to protecting themselves from the cold, the region’s inhabitants are skilled weavers. Using fibers from the alpaca and the sheep, they create sweaters, belts and vests, among other items of clothing. Wood working is popular in the Andean region for furniture and clay is used for tableware as well as other embossed copper utilitarian items.
