We believe that a healthy environment is better for our cows, our land and our crops, and better for our family. I feel like I’m farming like my grandfather in today’s world, and truly enjoying it. K Position at VIVA Publisher On Balanced Living Living a balanced life has changed for me. With a new job and a long commute, things can get a bit chaotic. The driving was really stressful, yet I have learned to embrace the train and subway. Going from a two-minute commute to a two-hour commute, I have time I never had before to read, think and listen to music. I have learned to travel with less, plan my time at home better and prepare great meals in advance. If you eat a healthy diet, why not set the same standard for your beauty routine? By cutting out potentially toxic ingredients such as phthalates, parabens, sodium laurel sulfates (SlS) and triclosans in your beauty products, you could be improving your health overall. Many of the aforementioned ingredients are suspected of being carcinogens and hormone disruptors. Choose organic and natural cosmetic brands that don’t test their products on animals to ensure that you and the company you support enforce environmental and ethical standards. Check the label — most brands will make it clear on the packaging if they support animal rights initiatives. Natural products not only improve the look of your skin and

hair, they can actually help nourish and repair. Many contain multi-purpose ingredients such as coconut, argan, olive, evening primrose and jojoba oils that will nourish your hair and body. Looking for natural skin boosters? Wash up with a rosehip oil cleanser that’s a natural source of Vitamin C, exfoliate with a cleanser containing rice or oatmeal, apply naturally sourced

salicylic acid from the willow tree to help fight acne and slather on a serum with the açai berry from South America, a potent antioxidant. If you want a soothing skin mask, look for those with avocado oils to help retain moisture, yogurt to soothe and cleanse and honey which holds in moisture and also acts as a natural antibacterial agent. There’s no need to forgo a pretty manicure to go green. Look for an eco-friendly nail polish that’s free of the big no-no’s — phthalates, formaldehyde, camphor and toluene. For the beauty queen who won’t leave the house without her face on, try something mineral based. Made with mica and zinc, these products are great for sensitive skin types (such as rosacea sufferers) because they are generally free of irritants such as fragrance or dyes. Look for perfume made with essential oils and botanical scents such as lavendar, patchouli, or rosewater. The aromatherapeutic benefits of these scents can help calm, stimulate or de-stress while giving you a sweet scent. Safe for your skin and your lungs, breathe easy knowing that you’re spritzing yourself with a plant-based product.

Having rosy cheeks may not seem like a serious issue, yet living with this condition can be extremely frustrating. Here’s how to manage it b christine cho E E T

When blood vessels in the face widen and engorge, it can be difficult to face the day with confidence beneath the redness, bumps and irritation. While the exact cause of rosacea can’t be confirmed, there are some predictable triggers to avoid if you’re a likely candidate (fair-skinned women between 30-60 years old). Heat, humidity, stress and other everyday factors can fl are up an outbreak. Natural avoidance tactics include: 1. Stay cool and in the shade. If you must be out in the sun, wear a hat and sunscreen with at least SPF 15 2. As you are probrably aware, avoid abrasives such as harsh chemicals and coarse scrubs. Make sure to keep your makeup brushes and other tools clean and soft 3. Try to use talc-free cosmetics, as talc’s large particle size and coarse texture may cause flare ups 4. Steer clear of very spicy foods 5. Soak a soft cloth in ice cold water and apply to flushed areas of face to constrict blood vessels

THE EC

E

Although rosacea is not as common during your 0s, don’t rely on your youth to avoid the onset of rosacea or any other skin conditions that you can help prevent. Avoid triggers such as heat and harsh chemicals in

T E T

There are many natural remedies to treat or improve the effects of rosacea. Some of the more popular natural ingredients include: 1. Licorice: Alleviates redness and itchiness 2. Green tea: Reduces red bumps and provides photo protection 3. Oatmeal: Moisturizes and alleviates dry, itchy skin 4. Tea tree oil: Anti-infl ammatory, anti-bacterial, anti-fungal 5. Lavender: Calming, soothing CO E

I

Even with treatment and prevention, rosacea may still peek through – yet it shouldn’t stand in your way to face the world clear-faced and smiling. Try the following cosmetic tips: 1. Use a green tinted cover-up/concealer on red areas 2. Use a yellowish tinted cover-up/concealer on more purple-red areas 3.Apply a light dusting of mineral powder on top

When should I start using anti-aging products? I am about to turn 25 and I had heard that was the time to start. What products should I use and what ingredients should I look for?

Is there anything I can do to strengthen my fingernails? Mine always grow to a certain point and feel quite strong but then begin to peel and soften once they reach a nice length.

- ustine, ingston

- ianne, Burlington

In my opinion it’s never too early to start as anti-aging is really the buzzword for preventative products that contain antioxidants. Antioxidants target specific components of the cells in your skin and help to reduce the risk of wrinkles and protect against sun damage. Antioxidants include vitamins A, C, E, selenium, CoQ10 and alpha-lipoic acid.

As nails are made up of keratin (a protein), you may want to address your protein intake. Eating more protein-rich foods will help to develop stronger nails. Calcium, iron and silica are also needed for healthy nails. I would also recommend you take fish oil on a daily basis as it is essential in maintaining healthy skin and nails. Remember to eat well-balanced meals and drink plenty of water.

Look for products derived from pure and natural ingredients. Try to stay away from products containing sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS), propylene glycol (PG), isopropyl alcohol, mineral oil, diazolidinyl urea, FD & C colour and all fragrances. Depending on your skin type, I would recommend keeping it simple with a cleanser, toner and light moisturizer high in antioxidants.

In addition to getting the right nutrients, you may want to massage a nourishing oil such as jojoba oil into the nail and nail bed. As water is the nail’s biggest enemy, try wearing cotton-lined rubber gloves if your nails spend a lot of time submerged in water. Take a two-week break from nail polish once in awhile to keep nails healthy. Choose polish without toluene and nail hardeners that contain formaldehyde as they will dry out your nails over time. Keep in mind that nails grow about three millimetres per month, so be patient as it will take two or three months to see results.

Dear Justine,

Dear Dianne,

For a more intensive approach, you could try an AFA facial peel which has powerful antioxidants and exfoliants.

Spring Greening

Spring cleaning can be daunting but with a few eco-friendly tips, you’ll be done in no time b essica uniac

S UE K C E

A good all-purpose cleaner should be a household staple and there are many natural and green products to keep you and your house feeling green and germ free. You can also easily make your own cleaner at home – it ’s safe, inexpensive and easy. The Green Guide recommends dissolving four tablespoons of baking soda into one litre of warm water, or using a vinegar-and-salt mixture or liquid castile soap and sturdy scrubber sponge to attack grease and grime. Remeber to wear gloves to protect your hands. I E

A regular old cloth will do instead of wasteful paper towels; it can be washed and reused over and over again and will hold up better as you clean. Organic cotton, hemp, or flax linen are all smart options for cloth materials. Microfibre cloths also work well, especially on windows. Another option is to buy recycled paper products. Choose those with the highest post-consumer waste (PCW) content. The percentage of PCW in a recycled product refers to the amount of pulp derived from paper that was used by consumers and then recycled; this saves trees and promotes the use of recycled paper. ive t ese a tr

For that never-ending pile of laundry, try adding one-half cup of baking soda along with your natural laundry soap; this increases your detergent’s cleaning power and removes odours. If you have kids and deal with stubborn stains regularly, soak fabrics in water mixed with borax, lemon juice, hydrogen peroxide, or white vinegar. Eliminate static cling in the dryer by separating natural fibres from synthetic, or you can add one-quarter cup of white vinegar to the wash cycle. For the warmer months, a better option is to dry synthetic clothes on a clothesline. I

For streak-free windows, make your own spray from a cup of water and a quarter cup of white vinegar, or a tablespoon of lemon juice; these additions will help with those sticky fi ngerprints and oily smudges. Microfibre cloths make it easy and effective. C E

What really happens to the old bottles and pop cans you throw in the blue bin? You might be surprised by where they end up b

hat was once a novel exercise for environmentalists, the last of the ‘three Rs’ is now part of every household routine. We separate recyclable waste from garbage, tossing it all into a blue bin that we dutifully drag to the curb each week. Then it disappears. Except that it doesn’t. In Toronto, 600,000 tons of garbage are sent to a landfi ll each year and 130,000 tonnes of organic waste are converted into a slurry used mainly for fertilizer. So what happens to the 230,000 tonnes of pop cans, boxes and bottles that Torontonians throw into a blue bin annually? How does it get there and how much does it cost?

38 

040-041.VIVA_EnergyUpdate.indd 38

We traced each step of the complex recycling process by following a single milk jug made from high-density polyethylene (HDPE) plastic. HDPE is a material made from petroleum and is used to make milk jugs and laundry detergent bottles. Because the price of oil has shot up dramatically in recent years, the cost of making plastic products has also increased, making the recycled forms of HDPE more marketable. Put simply, to follow an HDPE milk jug is to elect a product that is most likely to succeed. “Part of the problem with glass and paper is that it’s dependent on whether or not there’s a market for it at the time,” says Philip Byer, a professor in the department of civil engineering and the Centre

for Environment at the University of Toronto. “It’s not the city’s fault if there isn’t and they can try to stockpile it when they have a difficult time selling it. But they won’t tell you if they ever landfi ll it — I’ve asked the question, and it can be hard to tell how accurate some of the answers are.” What the city will say is that the Solid Waste Management department makes a concerted effort to sell high-quality recycled goods to contractors in the region and that in 2010, the city brought in approximately $20 million doing so. Still, the net cost of the recycling program was about $80 per ton last year — and that number only takes the recycled goods that are diverted from landfi lls into account, not all of those that are collected. The HDPE milk jug arrives with a single stream of recyclables to one of two Material Recovery Facilities in the city. There, it undergoes a complex sorting process that relies on human workers who pick through items on conveyer belts, correcting the errors that a complex, automated sorting process makes. Our milk jug, which has to end up in an HDPE-only bale of plastic, is identified with an optical scanner. As the pieces of plastic move through the scanner, a light shines on each item. Since each material reflects light differently, the machine can tell which pieces are HDPE and which are the less durable polyethylene terephthalate (PET). Workers compact the sorted items into bales that are then loaded up into trucks sent from buyers. Since the city does not clean each item, that is often the next stop for materials such as HDPE. Our milk jug could be sent to Haycore Canada in Russell, Ontario to be thoroughly cleaned. “After that, we’ll sell it to somebody who will melt it down and make it back into a product,” says Michel Jacobs, President of Haycore Canada. “There are lots of companies that can make it into products, but it needs to be prepared so they can use it.” continued on page 40. From there, our milk jug’s next life could be as a pipe or a clothing hanger (“the kind you get at the dollar store,” Jacobs says). However, our HDPE milk jug will travel 900 kilometres south to Winchester, Virginia to the headquarters of Trex Inc., a manufacturer of lumber made from recycled plastic and wood. “It’s lower maintenance and is more durable than a piece of wood,” says Dave Heglas, the director of material resources at Trex. “Our composite is better than wood from a performance standpoint when it comes to housekeeping and wear. It’s a green product.” It is green, except that, unlike paper products, it cannot be recycled again. Still, experts say that it’s worth the short-term cost to offset the long-term environmental costs of not diverting recycled materials from landfi lls. “On average, I would say, really, it’s better for us as a society to be recycling our materials,” the University of Toronto’s Philip Byer says. “It’s better for us to reduce, but if we’re producing these wastes, we should turn them into useful products.”

week sugar detox Here is the groundbreaking natural mulberry tablet – to end your sugar addictions! Annes story: “I love sodas, chips, gummies and chocolate. Admittedly I let sugar control my eating habits. Whenever I was tired I would grab some candy from my bag and in the evenings I would get tempted by chocolate and ice cream. I felt like a sugar junkie and I was growing out of my clothes.” I lacked willpower “I stopped by my health food store one day to get some help. The storeowner was not surprised about my problems with sugar. He explained that when we eat simple sugars, our blood sugar can fluctuate too much and that can create more hunger and the accommodating weight gain. He suggested that I try a 3-week “sugar detox” using a new supplement called Mulberry Zuccarin. It will help stabilize your blood sugars naturally by cutting the amount of calories you uptake, he explained, and stable blood sugar helps you control your sugar cravings.”

Cheating the sugar – with Mulberry Zuccarin “I followed the store owners advise. Basically, he told me to take a tablet with each meal that contained carbohydrates. The mulberry extract would make sure that the calories in the carbohydrates were not fully digested. In other words, I could “cheat” with mulberry. So I could eat carbohydrates and not have to worry so much about my weight. I liked that idea!”

The man who made the whole town lose weight! Johnny Petterson is a health food store owner in he small town of Ålesund, Norway. Johnny started to recommend New Nordics Mulberry Zuccain to his customers and soon noticed that they were losing their sugar cravings and losing weight. Manage unwelcome pests in your home naturally using essential oils b colleen hague c a h p

ssential oils are a combination of organic compounds and they are the by-product of the metabolism of the plant. Their function is to attract pollinating insects and act as a cooling mechanism and as a means of preventing or protecting against insect or animal predators. Mint plants (peppermint, in particular) are wonderful for repelling a variety of bugs. Although you would need dozens of mint plants around your house to keep it pest-free, just one small bottle of peppermint essential oil will do the trick. Even if you believe that every little creature has a right to live, you don’t necessarily want them living in your house! Essential oils can help discourage (not destroy) uninvited guests. There are about 10 essential oils that work for pest management. The top three to stock up on include peppermint (it is a bit more potent than spearmint), lemongrass (the scent is softer than citronella) and cedarwood (less “industrial” smelling than pine). Of course, scent is a personal choice, so you should really test the individual aromas for yourself. Mix 20 drops of peppermint and 20 drops of lemongrass in 100 ml of tap water and pour into a spray bottle. Shake well, then spray around windows, doors and floor mats to ward off pests. You can also use this mixture to spray outdoor patio cushions and table linens. Get creative by placing a few drops of pure essential oil on a colourful ribbon and hang it around the house or deck. The ribbons add a decorative touch and you can then enjoy your evening coffee in peace.

42 

040.VIVA_PestMan3.indd 42

For a personal repellent, blend 20 drops of peppermint, 10 drops of lemongrass and 20 drops of cedarwood in 120 ml of jojoba oil to keep the bugs away. When making a natural repellent for children or the elderly, cut the amount of essential oils in half. Essential oils are easily accessible and can be found across a wide variety of stores. Look for a pure oil, ideally organic. A good quality organic essential oil costs between $10 and $15 - a small price to pay for a (naturally) pest-free home and garden. I SECT

Green Day

White Dress,

Incorporate earth-friendly touches to add a little green (and a lot of sentimentality) to your white wedding b

atherine lo

here is no shortage of decisions to be made for your wedding day – cake, flowers, dress – even the groom! It’s the happiest day of your life, so why not feel as good about your wedding’s footprint? A green wedding doesn’t have to destroy your budget and it doesn’t mean you have to compromise on style, either. In fact, going green can save you time and money – both of which a bride could use a little more. Plus, being good to Mother Earth adds sentimental touches, too.

Reworking your mother’s wedding dress into something that suits your body and style perfectly not only looks unique, it also adds an incredibly sentimental element to your day. Alterations are likely to cost much less than purchasing a brand-new gown and you will feel good knowing that valuable resources weren’t wasted in the production of your dress – it’s reusing at its finest! Go local! Choose a wedding venue that reflects your personal style and that will work with you to achieve your green vision. Wineries are a great option – not only are they surrounded by nature, they provide wine sourced on-site – what could be more local? Many also include locally grown menu options as well as organic and vegan dishes. Or choose a venue that allows you to provide your own food, then work with a caterer to supply one or two items yourself. Many couples have saved thousands by providing their own hors d’œuvres or desserts. “My grandmother baked 20 blueberry pies for our August wedding after my mom picked all the berries herself,” says newlywed Caitlin Cooper. “Her pies are my all-time favourite. The berries were in season, it was a great way to include my grandmother and it was something different. Guests still rave about them.” ETU

No longer considered uncouth, online invitations can make a serious style statement while also saving tons of chemically treated paper every year (not to mention vehicle emissions from postal delivery). The online route saves busy brides a great deal of time, as there is no need to hunt down Great-Uncle Fred’s new mailing address or worry about long delivery wait times. While stationery can run up to $2,500, online invitations are virtually free! Spend some time coming up with a design that reflects both you and your fiancé’s tastes, personalize with photos and links, then email away! Many programs also offer tracking systems for guest replies, saving you loads of stress and time – all while saving the planet.

Bridal flowers can put a solid dent in the total wedding budget, so save some green by going green – grow your own. Set your wedding date around the seasons – if you love tulips, get married in the spring. Gladiola fan? Th row a July wedding. By using flowers from your own (or a friend’s) backyard, you’ll save both money and the planet. Since traditional flowers can be sprayed dozens of times with chemical anti-fungals, pesticides, chemical fertilizers and hormones, choose an organic florist who uses local blooms. They can prepare your bouquets and you can supplement the centrepieces with your own stems, cutting your flower expenses in half. Beautiful, inexpensive and easy! ITH THIS I

Your bridal jewellery should be breathtaking; not only because of its meaning, yet also because when it’s all said and done, the jewellery (and your memories) are all that remain. So make a lasting impression and choose recycled gold or antique pieces that retain their charm. It’s new to you – and you’ll save money by choosing a vintage piece. Diamonds are often worth much less second hand, so you could even end up with a bigger rock for the same budget. And when it comes to diamonds, be sure to choose ethically sourced rocks. Some Canadian diamonds even include microscopic etchings of maple leaves or polar bears, so you can keep your home country close at hand. “I think using family rings is a nice way to connect with the past,” says Alex Oulton, who proudly wears his grandfather’s wedding ring. “It also saved a lot of money.” Oulton redesigned his wife’s engagement ring from his grandmother’s to create something new while using saved materials. “I would never have been able to give such a unique (and large) ring to my wife if I hadn’t used my grandmother’s. It’s nice to know that all the gold and diamonds are being used again.” T KE HO E T E TS

“We have a lot of relatives coming from overseas so sending invitations by air would be a big expense,” says Anna Drahovzal, who is planning an October wedding in Ottawa with fiancé Mark Weir. “Instead, we’ve decided to send save-the-dates through email and then a few months later we’ll send the actual invitations in the same way. We like that people have the option to print out both items if they so choose, but if they don’t want a hard copy, they don’t waste paper!”

Making a donation to an earth-friendly charity on your guests’ behalf is a lovely thought – yet it’s been done. Add a twist (and a take-home gift) by printing the favour on beautiful seed paper, which guests can then plant in their own gardens. That way, they will know you have made a great gesture with your donation and they will have a growing keepsake to remind them of your big day. Seed paper can grow wildflowers, herbs or even vegetables. Get growing! EARTH ISSUE 2011

When it comes to treatments, tea tree oil is a mighty antiseptic cure. In fact, the indigenous people of New South Wales in Australia used the leaves of the tea tree plant in poultices to treat cuts and wounds and inhaled the oil to help with congestion and respiratory problems.

Tea tree oil’s antiseptic and anti-infl ammatory properties can also soothe the pain and itching of stings and bites. Tea tree oil can also help relieve athlete’s foot and foot odour and it makes a great dog shampoo, helping to treat “summer itch” and non-specific skin irritation. It is also the active ingredient in shampoos formulated for dandruff and head lice. Include it in a fi rst-aid kit for a multipurpose remedy and preventative tool. For bumps and bruises, arnica gel is a must-have item to reduce swelling and pain caused by minor mishaps.

Camping or hiking with kids this summer? Don’t get caught unprepared - be sure to spritz everyone with natural insect repellent to avoid itchy (and whiny) kids. Look for products that contain andiroba oil, vanilla oil or soya bean oil. There are many natural insect repellents that use citronella oil as another natural alternative. The oil comes from dried cultivated grasses and, like soybean oil, masks human odour that attracts insects. Andiroba oil has been used for thousands of years to treat skin and muscular infl ammations and also to ward off insect bites. As effective natural deterrents to insects, products containing these oils are a musthave for outdoor spring activity.

Spending time in the sun also requires protection and all-natural sunscreens are perfect for kids and those with sensitive skin. Natural sunscreens often use titanium dioxide or zinc oxide, naturally occurring minerals that form micro-thin barriers on skin to reflect harmful rays. The added bonus to using natural sunscreens is the antioxidant-rich organic plant oils and herbal emollients.

arly last year, Green & Black’s Organic, the world’s first organic chocolate brand, announced that its entire range of chocolate bars and beverages, worldwide, would become Fair Trade Certified. Already recognized for creating the best tasting premium-quality chocolate using all organic ingredients, Green & Black’s commitment to Fair Trade further propels positive change in numerous communities, particularly in the Dominican Republic. Green and Black’s recognizes that only by creating a thriving cocoa community, and by supporting and guaranteeing a sustainable supply chain, will Green & Black’s continue to be a leader in the production of great tasting ethical chocolate.

Fair Trade Helps Green & Black’s Preserve the Unique Taste and Quality of its Chocolate

More than 15 years ago, Green & Black’s introduced its Maya Gold bar – the very first Fair Trade Certified chocolate product in the world. Since then, the Company has been both a pioneer and an advocate for the Fair Trade movement. Fair Trade ensures that farmers are paid a guaranteed, fair price for their crops. Th is provides them with a sustainable income, along with social premiums that go towards improving social, economic, and environmental conditions within their communities. U I UE

One of the regions to benefit from this increased Fair Trade commitment is the Dominican Republic. Green & Black’s has purchased quality, organic cocoa beans from co-operatives in the Dominion Republic for over 10 years and it’s critically important for the Company to continue to source its cocoa beans from this region. The unique fl avour of Green & Black’s chocolate is dependent on the use of Hispaniola beans that only come from these communities.

Hispaniola beans are of the Trinitario variety which comprises of approximately just two percent of the global cocoa production, and are mainly grown in the Caribbean and Latin America. Trinitario beans have strong and distinctive fl avour characteristics which set them apart from the Forestero bulk beans which make up the other 98 percent of the world’s cocoa crop. The fl avours of Trinitario also differ from region to region due to differences in climate and soil types, in a similar way to individual terroirs on wine. For example, Trinitario beans from the Dominican Republic – where Green & Black’s sources the majority of its cocoa – taste differently than those from Peru. O E CO

Currently the global cocoa industry is facing a number of well documented problems including declining yields, ageing trees, poor farm management and problems with pests and fungal crop diseases. The effect is forcing farmers to seek livelihoods through other means either by diversifying into more reliable crops or by taking jobs in the city. The Dominican Republic is not immune from these problems. In 2009, Green & Black’s

commissioned an independent report, conducted by the University of Manchester, to identify the opportunities and challenges facing the cocoa communities in the Dominican Republic and to understand where support is most needed. In response to the report, Green & Black’s is tackling these issues in a way that ensures the Dominican Republic cocoa communities are being properly supported. Green & Black’s is committing £400,000 per year for a planned period of eight years to the Dominican Republic cocoa farmers and their communities. Th is investment will be made mainly through Fair Trade premiums and direct investment from Green & Black’s, and is helping improve productivity through better farm management. It’s also supporting the communities with improved facilities like access to fresh water, health care and schools. As a result, Green & Black’s is helping to make the cocoa producing industry a more attractive, viable proposition for younger people in the Dominican Republic. In addition, Green & Black’s is investing £100,000 per annum in communities in

Belize which supply cocoa for its popular Maya Gold bar. I

“Green & Black’s has a long standing relationship with Fair Trade,” says Neil La Croix, Head of Sustainability at Green & Black’s. “Both organizations have similar goals regarding the development of farmers. Fair Trade requirements provide the ideal framework through which to invest, as it follows a democratic process in which accountability and decision making is delegated to the growers’ organizations.” To Green & Black’s ethical trading makes good business sense. Trading fairly and paying a fair price for chocolate is key to creating thriving cocoa communities. Supporting a sustainable supply chain and preserving the livelihoods of all those involved in the production of chocolate will ensure the survival of the Dominican Republic cocoa and the unique taste of Green & Black’s chocolate for generations to enjoy. Laugh It Up

Not only is laughter good for the soul, it can also help reduce the risk of anxiety and stress-related illnesses such as heart disease, depression, asthma, arthritis, allergies and hypertension. Laughter reduces the level of stress hormones and increases the level of healthimproving endorphins and neurotransmitters, which make for a strong immune system. Laughter can distract from negative emotions, connecting us with others and providing a more positive mindset, which makes stressful events seem less threatening.

e all need to take a more proactive approach in supporting and maintaining the health of our eyes. Although age has a predictive value when it comes to changes in vision, lifestyle factors produce the greatest risks to eye health. While people consider expensive and potentially dangerous interventions for their eyes, highly effective natural options exist to help with most visual impairments. When treated early enough, the majority of eye conditions are preventable, if not completely reversible. Myopia or nearsightedness is the most common eye condition, affecting about 30 per cent of the population. Occurring due to changes in the shape of the eye, nearsightedness results in blurred vision and corrective lenses. It appears that the risk of requiring corrective lenses or an increased lens prescription correlates directly with the level of education a person acquires, the amount of reading done for pleasure and the amount of time spent indoors. Currently 40 per cent of us are at risk of developing some form of preventable visual impairment. Cataract, the most common of the degenerative eye conditions, affects roughly 2.5 million Canadians and is responsible for more than half of all vision loss in people over

60 years of age. Cataract is caused by damage to the lens of the eye. Macular degeneration affects nearly 1 million people and is a leading cause of vision loss in people over the age of 50. Th is condition is caused by damage to the photoreceptors of the eye due to changes in the blood vessels of the retina. Diabetic retinopathy is a condition caused by sugar-induced blood vessel damage in the retina of the eye and subsequent visual impairment. Further still, Glaucoma, or optic nerve damage, is also strongly associated with changes in blood flow to the eye and an elevation of inner eye pressure. The eyes are the most essential and complex of our sensory organs. This delicate network of specialized cells, neurons and blood vessels is highly susceptible to free radical damage. So it is no surprise that cigarette smoke, excessive alcohol consumption, ultraviolet light exposure, medication side effects and poor diet have all been associated with progressive vision loss. An unrefined whole food diet, a healthy lifestyle and wearing sunglasses to prevent excessive ultraviolet radiation exposure can dramatically reduce the risk of damage to our most valued sensory organ. Specific nutrients help, too – see the chart on page 52 to learn how to help common eye conditions.

The muscle fibres under young skin are short, thick and taut, making it firm. As we age, the fibres loosen, making skin thin and saggy. Research shows MAE increases tensile strength of skin, reduces the look of wrinkles and offers antioxidant and anti-in ammatory properties for healthier, youthful skin.

Dear Nora, Thank you for your question. Once you and your physician have ruled out all secondary causes of hyperhidrosis it can be very helpful to have a 24-hour urine vanillylmandelic acid (VMA) test. Successful treatment for your concern will lower your total VMA levels and may be used as a marker for treatment success. It would also be important to test several hormones (cortisol – AM and PM, DHEA, androstenedione, free testosterone, estradiol, progesterone and fasting insulin) as any number of hormonal imbalances may cause abnormal sympathetic nervous system (SNS) output. Try eliminating all caffeine, spicy foods and refined sugar. Regular exercise, in the form of interval, resistance or yoga training, along with regular walking and deep breathing practice would also be helpful.

Gets back to her (primitive) roots b bonnie siegler

T

he CSI: Miami star and former Viva cover girl, Eva LaRue, has certainly had her fair share of screen time this year – while co-star and former Viva cover lady, Emily Proctor, was off during pregnancy, LaRue was more than happy to pinch hit for her friend. Yet having the opportunity to reveal even more of her savvy and tenacious character, Natalia Boa Vista, meant LaRue, 44, endured longer hours and hectic days. Yet she says that the Paleo diet helped her feel “glorious” and that cavewoman eating transformed her body and her health while giving her energy to squeeze in even more exercise. Staples of the Paleo plan include fresh herbs and spices, nuts, good oils and healthy fats, fruit, vegetables, meats and seafood, plus water. This way of eating, which focuses on lean meats, healthy fats and virtually unlimited fruit and vegetables, is similar in nature to Atkins, only with more carbohydrates. “I’ve done so many diets – everything from Atkins to Eat Right for Your Blood Type – and the weight would always come back on in months,” the former yo-yo dieter reveals. But within five weeks of eating the Paleo way, LaRue dropped 9 kgs (20 pounds) from her frame – and she has kept the weight off for over a year. “I lost inches off my butt, thighs, stomach, back, neck, face … all over,” she says. “Plus, I have so much more energy throughout the whole day now.” A delicious day in LaRue’s new eating begins with two scrambled eggs (using Omega-3 enriched eggs) with veggies, goat cheese and hot sauce. A mid-morning snack is usually roast beef or turkey rolled in lettuce with mustard. Lunch is a hearty salad of mixed greens topped with sliced chicken breast followed by an afternoon snack of Paleo Snax beef jerky. Dinner can be a slow-cooker dish of beef with onions and mixed vegetables, such as red peppers and tomatoes. “I love all kinds of meat and fish so I guess this was easy for me,” she says. “And I can’t keep the Paleo jerky around. It’s a great snack for me, my husband, Joe, and even [my daughter] Kaya.” Paleo is a lifestyle more than a diet, she says. “I’ve struggled with diets in the past and what I love about this is that it’s not really a diet. You learn what your body is meant to eat, it’s really about eating different kinds of meat, vegetables and fruit – eating natural foods.” What’s more, sticking to the plan is easy, she says. “You’re eating mostly protein, so you’re fuller much longer and not apt to make a snap judgment and grab something bad. Your blood sugar level becomes even, so you have fewer cravings.” If cravings do crop up, LaRue doesn’t deny herself. “Life is too short, so I have that cake or cookie or

do things. Even though the last thing you want to do is be organized because it seems like another chore, you’re less stressed because it’s off your plate.”

An added bonus from eating this way is that even though LaRue wears heavy makeup up to 16 hours a day when working, she noticed clearer skin and shinnier hair within five weeks of switching to these foods. “My hairdresser at work said two years ago that I had the driest hair of all time and he couldn’t even coax a shine out of it. Now he noticed my hair growing like a weed and it’s so shiny and healthy. It’s a totally different head of hair.”

Yet her biggest stress release is spending time with Kaya. “The other day she had an orthodontist appointment in the morning and I had the day off until 3:30 so I let her ditch school because I just wanted to spend time with her. We went to Color Me Mine and did some ceramic work – it was just the two of us. I make sure I get the time with people I love.”

LaRue admits it’s been an interesting season for the show with her role being given more screen time. “I’m really just tired so I definitely need to get some good sleep,” she says on what helps with the added stress. Another form of stress management comes in the form of list making. “Oddly enough, the busier and more stressed out I am, the more organized I tend to be. When I’m more relaxed, everything goes to hell in a hand basket. I have to make lists or I don’t remember to

Having been before the cameras since her soap opera days on All My Children, LaRue is reflective about her own maturation process. “Perspective is everything and I definitely have a more universal perspective than I ever had before,” she says. “I always try to consider everyone’s point of view and where they’re coming from. That helps me not take anything personally, which lifts a huge weight off me. Life is then less dramatic and less stressful. Hey, it’s a big job running around judging everybody,” she laughs.

Jackson’s flattering words about Toronto are the same many of those she has worked with use to describe her. One can tell a lot about an artist by the company she keeps and in the case of Janet Damita Jo Jackson, that roll call is star-studded – Michael Jackson, Herb Alpert, Alicia Keys, Mary J. Blige and Kanye West – just to name a few. Jackson has also blazed a trail for current musical talents such as Ciara and Britney Spears.

64 

072-077.VIVA_CoverStory.indd 64

After a youth spent in the spotlight, with and without her famous brothers, she mixed talent, hard work and a little luck to give us the tour de force behind music and films such as Rhythm Nation, Poetic Justice, Why Did I Get Married, The Klumps and more. The petite star with the big talent was born in Gary, Indiana and raised in Encino, California – the youngest of the famed Jackson family. At age seven, she started her career as an actress in her family’s 1976 variety television series The Jacksons, segueing to Good Times and Fame throughout the 1970s and ’80s. It was at sweet 16 that Jackson was “discovered” as a singer, signing with A&M and releasing her self-titled debut album, only to begin a long-term relationship with producers Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis with her third album, Control, in 1986. Janet Jackson’s sound was born with a unique mix of rhythm and blues, disco, funk, rock and rap.

She’s back. And her Number Ones: Up Close & Personal tour is proving it. Jackson dedicated a number-one song to each city on her tour - Come Back to Me was her pick for the City of Toronto. “One of the lyrics in Come Back To Me is ‘I miss you so much. Wherever you are, I love you.’ That is exactly how I feel about the City of Toronto,” says Jackson. “The people of Toronto have always been so warm and welcoming.”

After her initial success, Jackson, 45, experienced peaks and valleys both professionally and personally (most recently with the death of her brother, Michael). Through it all, the artist says there has been a silver lining that has given her the ability to appreciate life more. “It has been a long road, but I love my life now, I really do,” she says in her famous hushed voice. “I appreciate all the success that I have had and learn from those things that are not what I would want them to be.” Looking back over the decades, Jackson says she has learned some valuable life lessons about longevity in the music business – and in life. “I would say always listen to your gut,” she says. “It will never steer you wrong.” And while much has been said and criticized over the years of her fashion sense, musical abilities and acting prowess, it’s her body and weight fluctuations that have captured worldwide attention. It’s no secret Hollywood is obsessed with weight and body image and Jackson admits she has endured her fair share of teasing – she’s even been called everything from a cow to a pig.

“As a kid, you laugh, but it still hurts,” she says. “When I was doing Good Times, they thought I was too heavy and that I needed to go on a diet to lose weight.” Jackson says she was your average-sized kid, yet the only difference was that she was on television. However, with talent, perseverance, discipline and good fortune, Jackson is still at the top of the charts, both musically and, most recently, with her bestseller, True You: A Journey To Finding and Loving Yourself.

“I have always struggled with weight and it goes back to my childhood. My book is not an autobiography, but it does have anecdotes from my life. I think it was important for readers to see what I was going through. People are surprised to learn that I have dealt with this … they feel that because I have been successful, that I haven’t. We all deal with self-esteem issues today. People tend to put entertainers on pedestals. We’re human beings, just like everyone else. I wrote this book because I hope people who read it, especially the kids, will learn that they are perfect just the way they are.” So is there a certain look or weight that makes the curvy hips, defined shoulders, and toned body more acceptable to her? “I am working to be comfortable at whatever weight I’m at,” she says. “I would rather focus on being healthy spiritually, emotionally and physically.” This self-reflection, both inside and out, is a major victory for Jackson, who has admitted to battling eating disorders, diets and a lifetime of intense scrutiny. “I’m an emotional eater,” she says. “If I am stressed or sad, I head straight for a bag of potato chips.” Jackson laughs at the mention of an offlimit food. “It would be easier to say what foods I don’t like. I love all kinds of food, really.” EARTH ISSUE 2011

Now Jackson is more regimented on her daily eating plan. “I do follow more rules when I am on tour. I have to be stricter with what I’m eating. We have worked so hard on creating a fun show for the fans that I want it to be perfect for them. I work out six days a week for about one hour with my trainer, Tony Martinez.” Martinez has worked alongside Jackson for many years and seems to have found the key to keeping her motivated and healthy. “He mixes everything up so I don’t get bored. He works hard to make my workouts fun. We laugh a lot and that makes it all easier.” Laugher is a key element in Jackson’s life. “If I wasn’t having fun, I wouldn’t be doing this tour,” she says. “I laugh all the time. I have a lot of amazing people on tour with me. We’re like a family and we joke around all the time.” Jackson has her own secrets to help maintain energy and stamina reserves through her hectic tour. The singer/

everything up.” Yet she has enjoyed shaking up her signature style, from bold shoulder pads to the 2006 Bill Blass dress, sweat suits to midriff-baring body-hugging tops and jeans. “I love fashion,” she says. “I have a great stylist, Robert Behar, who helps me find fun clothing. I have always been a tomboy and only recently began to like wearing dresses. It’s like dress-up for me. I am not intimidated by fashion … it should be fun.” Recognized for playing a pivotal role in crossing racial boundaries in the recording industry, Jackson downplays the accolades. “There are so many people who have gone before me to make what we enjoy today possible – Lena Horne, Dorothy Dandridge, Diahann Carroll … I hope that I have, in a way, made it better for the next generation, though.” Yet she readily accepts and is okay with the role model mantle bestowed upon her by millions of fans. “I don’t

“Always listen to your gut ... it will never steer you wrong.” dancer relies on drinking lots of water, eating fresh vegetables and “keeping everything I eat very clean and simple.” In fact, instead of starting out her day with a protein shake or coffee, Jackson says, “I begin each and every day with a prayer. That is very important to me. I eat many small meals throughout the day afterward.” With that spiritual reflection in mind, Jackson is now comfortable with her eating habits and how they have contributed to her overall health and wellbeing. “I am really healthy. There was a photo taken of me when I was a little heavier. The photo was mean, but what people don’t know is that I was actually really healthy at that time. I was running a lot on the beach, on soft sand which is much harder to do. The weight was just not budging. I am sure that eating habits contribute to your overall health, but what you look like can be deceiving.” Great artists get bored with repetition of any sort whether it’s exercise, daily routines or their music. They like to have a continuing transformation in life and Jackson is no different. “Everything I do is a reflection of what I am going through in life. My music is very personal to me. I create something that moves me and I hope that the fans can relate to it. I hope that as I experience different things, I grow from them. So I guess you could say that I live by this transformation mantra, but not because I feel like I need to change

66 

mind if people look to me as a role model,” she continues. “I am flattered. Isn’t everyone a role model though? We all have people who look up to us. That is why it was so important for me to create 20 under 20 on this tour. We are always seeing negative images on the news. I hope that the 20 young people that we will honour in each city will inspire people to better their communities. This tour is a love affair with my fans. It allows me to be up close with the audience and get more personal with them. That’s why it’s called Up Close and Personal.” This is all part and parcel of Jackson’s philosophy that she has developed throughout her life and one that she tries to impart to everyone she meets. Her life’s journey is constantly unfolding in front of her eyes. With True You, Jackson says it’s been a long, personal journey. “It has had its ups and downs, mostly ups, though. There is a quote that I think sums it up: ‘Fasten your seat belt, it’s going to be a bumpy ride,’” she laughs, quoting Bette Davis from All About Eve. The lengthy ride has given aim at finding, accepting and loving herself for the woman she is today. “Yes, but again, it has been a journey. One that I had to take on my own. But I’m at a point in my life where I think, ‘yeah, this is where I want to be.’ I finally am there. Not to be confused with the fact that I still have so much that I want to accomplish in my life and career. But I am happy, yes. And unfinished.”

hether her TV character lives in Alaska, Los Angeles or Wisteria Lane, actress Emily Bergl is at home. Well known for her role on Men In Trees and Southland, Bergl was introduced this season to Desperate Housewives viewers as Beth, the wife of Paul Young, a woman who has her own agenda for the locals; she’s not just a simple, innocent, eccentric jailhouse bride. “I’m certainly guilty of being a little eccentric myself,” says Bergl after a day of shooting. “I like things that are old fashioned; I’m a cabaret singer, too, and you don’t find that nowadays. I have a Jimmy Carter memorabilia collection that most people don’t have. I love doing hula hoop, too.” Born in Milton Keynes, England, Bergl’s résumé also includes starring roles on Broadway such as The Lion In Winter opposite Laurence Fishburne and Stockard Channing, which brought Bergl the FANY award for Best Broadway Debut. “I gravitate toward characters who have some depth and who are surprising.”

Juggling both Desperate Housewives and Southland, Bergl displays an affinity for volunteer work such as Recording for the Blind and Dyslexic, Read Across America, Habitat for Humanity and the Jimmy and Rosalyn Carter Work Project. Yet Bergl says the constant motion doesn’t wreak havoc on her immune system. “I’m usually strong as a horse,” says the actress. “My body naturally gravitates to loads of energy. I’m pretty happy when I’m on the run. But when I do all of this for a very long time, my body will shut down on me. Once every eight months my body will tell me to take a rest and I’m sick for a few days, but it could have to do with anxiety and exhaustion.” The actress is vigilant about checking for breast cancer. “I started getting mammograms when I was 28, which is pretty young, but I have a history of lumpy, cystic breasts,” she says. “So every six months, I have a breast surgeon examine me. Luckily there isn’t a lot of breast cancer in my family, but I know I have to be aware of my condition because it’s very difficult to detect a tumour with all the fibroids I have. But I don’t live my life by this condition and I eat whatever I really want.” Bergl’s daily intake has no typical day because “I don’t like to be regimented with my food and I don’t like to pay too much attention to it at all,” she says. “I eat when I’m hungry. I do try to eat vegetables and whole grains but some days I’ll have a cinnamon roll and yogurt for breakfast or lunch could be a slice of pizza while others could be a big salad. And some days you’ll find me eating a hot fudge brownie sundae at 2 in the morning. Life is not worth living without eating things like that. It sets up a balance in life.” She pauses and then laughs. “Also, I think a woman’s booty that has never touched a brownie just doesn’t look very good. People shouldn’t be so obsessed with what we put into

our mouths, the calories, the fats – to be honest with you, I just try and ignore all that because eating is not that big a deal. It’s part of life.” Consumption for passion, for social events, or for nutrition? “I eat for all the above. I love eating for passion though. I enjoy going to a nice restaurant; I love to cook. Food should be this enjoyable thing.” She never weighs herself. “I think that’s unhealthy for me,” she says. “Obviously I’m not eating ice cream at every meal like I did when at college, but if we took all that mental energy that people are devoting to abs, to calories, and use it for the greater good, we probably would have solved world hunger by now.” What she is adamant about is maintaining a healthy relationship with food and not letting her life be consumed with weight. “Nobody is going to put `I lost those last 10 pounds’ on their tombstone.” Supplementing her unregimented eating are gummie vitamins and chocolate-flavoured calcium chewies. Exercise, she says, is a big part of balancing out her physical and mental health. “Because my work times are so crazy, I basically have schedules for six different places all over New York and Los Angeles so I can run into a class whenever I can. I’m big into classes – Pilates, yoga, boxing and I just started resistance training.” Living in New York City part of the year gives Bergl the impetus to add walking into her daily exercise. “I think we’ve underestimated the power of just moving around in your everyday life,” she says. “So many people drive to the gym when they could walk. Why not take the stairs instead of the elevator? You’re about to workout so give it a good start by going up the stairs. Good health means taking the time to take care of yourself both mentally and physically. It is also always trying to expand, not falling into the same old patterns in exercise and in your world view. Travel and getting out of your comfort zone is good for overall healthy balance. And quite honestly, good health means not thinking about your health all the time and obsessing over it. The human body is designed to function well and I think sometimes you just need to let it function and get on with your life.” Why is it so important for Bergl to pay it forward with all her charity involvement when already juggling two acting jobs? “I donate my time when I can. There’s a saying at Habitat: ‘We build houses for people, but in reality, we end up getting back much more.’ I’m in a very insular business where how my hair or dress looks is all important. But for me, travelling to Thailand and building a house, seeing how the other half lives is very important to me. It recalibrates my being and I find it keeps me centred, plus it’s fun and makes me feel good.” Besides learning how to roof a house, Bergl recently overcame her fear of heights by climbing ladders and sitting atop a roof. “I learned there’s never one right way to do something, even if you’re building a house from plans. There are many different paths to get to the finished product in life.” EARTH ISSUE 2011

he strides across the field from a nearby barn carrying a shovel and wearing well-worn jeans, a sweater, muddied boots and a beaming smile. Why would actress Katharine Isabelle be so happy after spending six hours shovelling horse manure? “It’s my favourite thing to do besides ride my horses,” says the 29 year-old Canadian actress. Best known for the lead role as Ginger in the Ginger Snaps trilogy, Isabelle has amassed a variety of acting experience including TV’s Heartland and was presented with a Gemini Award for Actress in a Featured Supporting Role for The Englishman’s Boy. Now starring as Danni, a key player in helping solve crimes in Endgame, a new drama on Showcase, Isabelle’s days are long and hectic, but whenever there is downtime, she rides her horses, Sunday and Caleb, while keeping their stalls spic and span.

“Cooking is a very Zen thing; you’re in the moment. Just the smells and the chopping are therapeutic activities.” Isabelle’s lifestyle is quite down-to-earth and she is an avid proponent of alternative medicines including Chinese, acupuncture, homeopathic and herbal remedies. For a chronic shoulder and back condition thanks to her falls from riding, Isabelle has successfully treated the problem using electro-acupuncture. Having suffered acute allergies since early childhood with severe eczema, the single actress now treats these allergy outbreaks with Cell Food, a dietary supplement “that’s dissolved oxygen, amino acids, trace minerals and enzymes. You put it into water and it tastes lemony.” Another remedy for allergy attacks of any kind is taking at least 2000 milligrams of buffered Vitamin C. She also takes concentrated gel caps full of green food due to the lack of vegetables on set. “My mom has been very into alternative medicine since I was a little girl; she did a lot of research and eventually came around to more alternative therapies than just strict western medicine in order to keep me healthy,” says the Vancouver native. Although Isabelle grew up as a vegan, she gave up this way of eating at the age of 11 due to peer pressure. “But it was out of pure necessity that my mom regularly fed me wheat grass, rice cakes and all this health store food, cut out wheat and dairy and introduced me to many other Eastern philosophies,” she says. “I am very sensitive and just eating an un-organic strawberry would mean I would burst into hives.” Today, Isabelle still shuns gluten, sugar, dairy and non-organic foods, yet admits it’s difficult to be strict when working. “I can definitely feel when I’ve eaten something with gluten because I get bloated and the next day, the circles and bags under my eyes are darker and bigger,” says the 49-kilogram (107-pound) actress. “Once you cut out things like sugar, soda, dairy and wheat, when you eat them again, you don’t feel well and notice the difference. But I say in order

to live a balanced life, you have to take everything in moderation. If I slip up here and there, it’s no big deal.” Instead, Isabelle’s eating plan is full of green vegetables, free-range beef or chicken and rice. “I try to avoid acidic foods and stick to a more alkaline diet – again for overall health balance,” she says. “I live mostly off a nice piece of organic beef, very quickly char-grilled vegetables like a mixture of red peppers, spinach, asparagus, broccoli, kale with some onions and garlic.” In fact, Isabelle prides herself in knowing her way around the kitchen and enjoys preparing dinners for friends. “Cooking is a very Zen thing; you’re in the moment. Just the smells and the chopping are therapeutic activities.” Some signature dishes include Moroccan chickpea stew over rice or a delicious beef bourguignon. While cooking is one of her pastimes for stress management, Isabelle also likes to sit back and read. “Reading is something I did when I was on location when younger. We didn’t have video games and the Internet. I always had a book or Archie comic so it’s a real comfort for me to hunker down in a corner and read. I never leave home without a book just in case I get stuck somewhere when I have to wait.” While her principal form of exercise is riding, she also hauls wheelbarrows full of manure and hay. “So on my days off, I’m shovelling, hauling water buckets and bales of hay, riding, and walking a couple of kilometres. That’s my activity. I would much rather do something active outdoors where you’re not noticing you’re working out, instead of being inside at a gym. I tried the gym routine for a week and it bored me to death.” And she credits Sunday and Caleb with maintaining her grounded attitude. “My horses don’t give a crap who I am – just feed me, exercise me and clean out my stalls. But balanced living to me is moderation all the way. Depriving yourself of luxuries, goodies and treats is just cruel.” EARTH ISSUE 2011

anada’s Food Guide recommends that healthy adults need between six and eight servings of grain each day. Half of those should be whole grains from a wide variety of sources, including oats, barley and brown rice. A diet rich in whole grain and low in sugar and fat will not only make you feel fuller, it may lower your risk of developing a number of serious health problems, including obesity, Type 2 diabetes and heart disease. And, yes, children need their share, too. Many Canadians are simply not getting enough. You can’t always judge a grain by its colour. Just because that sandwich you’ve bought at the deli counter is on brown bread doesn’t mean it’s your healthiest option. Sometimes, it’s only coloured to look that way. Here’s something else you may not know: seeds and nuts, while wholesome foods, don’t count at all towards your daily intake of whole grains. So how can you get your grain and enjoy it, too? Well, here’s a refreshing option. Earth’s Own Food Company, a Canadian health and beverage company dedicated to nutrition innovation, produces the only whole grain rice beverages that bear the Whole Grains Council stamp of approval. It’s your guarantee that you’re making a healthy choice – for you or your family. ryza is made only from non-genetically modified, whole grain brown rice grown exclusively in North America. It’s rich in nutrients, fortified with calcium, Vitamin D, Vitamin A, Vitamin B2 and Vitamin B12, and low in sodium – while high on flavour. A bonus for those of us watching our waistlines (and, honestly, who isn’t?): it has only half the fat of other rice beverages – and, unlike other beverages on the market, zero added oil.

With its naturally sweet, nutty taste, and no added sugar, it’s especially yummy atop your morning cereal or oatmeal. Try it on its own, chilled in a glass. Or use it instead of milk or cream in your coffee or tea. You may even want to shake things up – and toss it in a blender with a bit of ice and your favourite berries or fresh or frozen fruit to create a refreshing, satisfying smoothie. With ryza, you can add whole grain goodness to all your favourite recipes! Kids will love it too. So will vegetarians, vegans, and those whose food allergies or sensitivities restrict them to a gluten- or dairy-free diet. Best of all, a single glass of ryza contains a full 16 grams of whole grains – an entire serving – in delicious, drinkable form. And like the entire Earth’s Own beverage line, you can rest assured that ryza is a wholesome, nutritious product, created by people who care deeply not only about your health, but also about our planet. Who knew getting whole grains could be so much fun—and good for us at the same time? Find our more at www.ryza.ca

rom the time a little girl can (barely) talk, princess mania can hijack her self-esteem. Be it fairytales or excitement over how cute she looks, she’s often taught to value beauty over intelligence, waiting for Prince Charming over harnessing Girl Power. The idea is further reinforced in her teen years, where being sexy equals being popular. Small wonder females learn to put a premium price on appearance and drive themselves crazy because they don’t like how one or more of their body parts looks. Yet since the relationship we have with ourselves is the most important relationship of all – one that defines all others – it’s crucial to trade that self-loathing for self-esteem. So how exactly do you do it? For starters, take a good look at all the negative selfdialogue you indulge in and ask yourself what triggers it. Is it airbrushed images of perfection? Is it the humility that was drilled into you as a child, where feeling beautiful implied egotism? Is it being taught to treat everyone else as better than yourself? Whatever it is, once you recognize that it’s based in erroneous thinking, you can start to challenge its validity. Next, you’ll learn to question the usefulness of such thoughts – how they make you feel, what purpose they fulfi ll, how you would feel if you could only ditch them. Th is is one of the most crucial steps, since our suffering stems from believing our stressful thoughts. At this point, if you realize that letting go of your usual thinking patterns could indeed make you feel better, you need to try out the opposite point of view, just to see where it takes you. Try making the following five promises to yourself:

Putting the self back into self-esteem b rebecca rosenblat bsc cert lc adr eft

1. I need to stop being critical of myself, loathing parts of me that I don’t like 2. I need to have more positive thoughts around what I do like about my looks 3. I need to accept my looks just as they are and stop comparing myself to others 4. I need to quit blaming everything on my looks and using them as a scapegoat 5. I need to realize that my appearance can’t stop me from having fun, unless I allow it

your life How you look on the outside doesn’t need to determine how you feel on the inside. Yet, too many individuals allow their looks to make them feel unhappy, even people whose looks everyone else may envy. The truth is

Once you acquire new ways of thinking, you’ll need to synchronize them with new behavioural patterns by breaking the old rituals that kept you trapped in obsessing over your looks. For example, if you tend to weigh yourself a lot, promise yourself that you won’t do it more than once a week; or, if you spend an hour a day grooming yourself, cut back to 45 minutes a day, 30 minutes on weekends. You’ll notice that people won’t treat you any differently than before. If anything, once you start to feel better about yourself, others will follow suit. As Sophia Loren said, “Sex appeal

As Sophia Loren said, “Sex appeal is 50 per cent what you got and 50 per cent what they think you got!” that nobody cares about your appearance as much as you do, so it’s important to interrupt those negative thoughts before they bring you down.

is 50 per cent what you got and 50 per cent what they think you got!” Finally, you’ll need to become your own best friend. Have that pep talk with yourself that you would with your BFF if you found her trapped in brutal, self-critical thinking. Then write a letter of apology to yourself, acknowledging all the ways you’ve been mean to yourself, and agree to stand up to anyone who tries to make you feel bad. Chances are, no one can ever be as mean to you as you’ve been to yourself. Before you know it, the anxiety that you felt around your body image will be replaced by self-esteem. After all, it’s called self-esteem since it’s based in how you see yourself – nothing else – which is completely under your own control!

Recovering from Infidelity Getting your relationship back on track after an indiscretion b rebecca rosenblat bsc cert lc adr eft

T

he room spins, acid shoots up into your mouth, you pray it’s just a bad dream and you can’t fathom how it could happen to you. Whether it’s an accidental discovery of a text or e-mail you weren’t supposed to see, a credit card bill that doesn’t make sense, or someone sitting you down to tell you about a partner’s infidelity, the reaction is always the same. The good news is that not only can you put your relationship back on track, you can make it stronger than ever, as long as both parties are truly willing and committed. 1. Communicate openly and honestly. Unless you talk about what happened, you will never find a way to move on. So ask and answer questions honestly, no matter how hard they might be. 2. Acknowledge the full effect of the affair. The cheater needs to assume full responsibility for the affair and validate its effect on the injured party – hurting self-esteem and damaging the relationship. 3. Avoid the blame game. While the cheater is responsible for the affair, constantly berating him or her doesn’t help. 4. Avoid making hasty decisions. Allow at least one week for the shock to wear off before making any short- or long-term decisions – you will have a chance to think through the consequences a bit more clearly. 5. Accept a period of mourning. Your relationship as you knew it will never return – something new will have to replace it. 6. If you can’t say it, write it down. If you are having a hard time communicating your feelings, try writing in a journal or writing

94 

057.VIVA_SexHealth.indd 94

letters to yourself. Writing also allows you to clear your head and organize your thoughts. 7. Make a list of what needs to be fixed. Once you have a sense of why the affair happened, decide how to address the issues that led to it – unmet needs, unresolved relationship issues, or detachment. 8. Be kind to yourselves. Give yourself a break and cut back on your tasks. Spending time together should be your priority, with one caveat – the affair can’t be a part of every discussion. 9. Work on your self-esteem together. Both the injured party as well as the cheater probably feel pretty low. Do whatever it takes to reaffirm each other. 10. Come up with a game plan. Whether it’s cutting back on habits such as alcohol or Internet use or seeking therapy to start a journey for self-improvement, the unfaithful party needs to commit to ways that will help him or her avoid a future affair. The injured party can’t be expected to believe anything without a clear-cut game plan that factors in accountability – eventually you will be able to rebuild trust. For many couples, an affair can be a wake-up call that draws attention to how precious the relationship is. Moving past an affair requires a lot of work yet to stay on the right track, the injured party can’t hold the affair over their partner’s head forever. No one wants to make this journey yet if you do need to, remember that it can be done and it’s well worth it to try.

Organics Orphans Making a difference in Africa b

I

magine the world would be like without poverty. Most people wouldn’t bother, rationalizing that it isn’t possible. Organics 4 Orphans thinks otherwise. They are an organization that believes it is possible and they’re working hard to make it happen. After visiting Africa, the founders grasped the reality that there are more orphans than homes that could ever be built for them; food security is an even bigger problem. Kenya imports 80 per cent of its food, even though it has the ability to grow anything. One major factor contributing to this problem is that the cost of chemical fertilizers increased tenfold, an unaffordable amount for most people. Even though African families are happy to take in orphans, they only do so if they can provide enough food for everyone. Organics 4 Orphans is working to teach communities how to grow high quality organic food, making it possible for everyone to eat. They have five-day programs that teach communities how to make their own organic fertilizers and pesticides, as well as save seeds. Their organization provides training, tools, fencing and watering cans, to help ensure a steady supply of disease-fighting food for everyone. The organization has over 100 projects on the go, mostly based in Kenya, but also branching into Uganda, Ethiopia, and Nigeria. It launched a 12-week mobile organic farming and natural medicine school to teach the 50 poorest countries of the world. Their form of agriculture is bio-intensive, producing two to six times as much food per square foot by using very little water. It allows the most amazing organic food to grow in very dry areas. Organics 4 Orphans have identified more than 20 different plants with high nutrient value, cutting diseases in half. While teaching the poor to grow healthy food, they are also helping them to understand the benefits of incorporating greens and herbs into their diets. There have been health reports showing improvement from people following their program. Through this strategy, the poor are supplied methods to help them rise from extreme poverty, giving them hope for a better future. The projects of Organics 4 Orphans are paid for by www.NaturalCalm.ca, with 100 per cent of all donated money going directly to the projects in Africa. All the overheads for the organization are paid for by www.NaturalCalm.ca. People can support a whole community in Africa for $42 a month at www.Organics4Orphans.org. Tax receipts are issued.

red, white or green? Wine lovers head to h2hotel for a stylish, relaxed and green getaway in Healdsburg, the heart of wine country b bonnie siegler

N

apa Valley has long been considered an oasis for wine and food lovers alike. With its brilliant vistas and sunsets, green hillsides, thriving vineyards and award-winning wines, the area is quintessential wine country. The main town in this area just 100 kilometres north of the Golden Gate Bridge is Healdsburg, a tidy niche in an oenophile’s epicentre. Just outside historic Healdsburg lies the h2hotel, a new 36-room LEED-certified hotel that offers stylish, comfortable accommodations. The property gives a fresh, vivacious feel from the moment you pass through its broad glass entryway. Water themes are reflected in the “Spoonfall” water sculpture, sustained by an underground water cistern replenished by natural rainfall. The hotel also boasts water bars with purified sparkling and still water on each floor and the property is committed to the Foss Creek Restoration project that runs along its western edge. “The h2hotel thoughtfully incorporates an eco-conscious sensibility into every aspect of its design, operation and attitude,” says Circe Sher, Marketing Director. The hotel features an undulating green living roof, which lessens the impact of rainwater on the city’s water treatment facilities. “The roof also helps insulate the building, keeping it warmer in winter and cooler in summer,” says Sher. “Plus it also provides a habitat for local birds, bees and butterflies.” Built using environmentally responsible and locally sourced building materials and products to create a sustainable property,

the hotel opened in July 2010. “Green design was a necessity and a natural progression for us,” says Managing Partner Paolo Petrone, who also co-owns Hotel Healdsburg. “Our goal was to create an environmentally conscious hotel without sacrificing comfort and style. We encourage our guests to be eco-minded during their stay as well as when they return home.” Guests at h2hotel relax and rejuvenate both body and soul in rooms appointed with lush Coyuchi organic cotton linens and robes, bamboo floors, oversized bathrooms and local art, which “gives the rooms character without excess fuss,” says Sher. Though the rooms are beautiful, a dining experiencing at Spoonbar is not to be missed. The menu is carefully sourced using seasonal ingredients and artisan-crafted products from local purveyors; the wine list, of course, is focused solely on sustainable producers. “Liquors are sourced from small-batch producers, many locally,” adds Sher. “Herbs, fruits and even garnishes used in crafting cocktails are sourced from local organic growers. The wine keg program offers wines on tap, which reduces packaging and spoilage.” Bar Manager Scott Beattie recently launched a “give us your fruit” trade program where locals with surplus citrus fruit, which is very bountiful in the area, can trade their winter citrus at market rate for dining credit at Spoonbar. Lessening its carbon footprint and minimizing the impact on the environment is a key element to the hotel’s success and ambience.

Built on the site of a former gas station, h2hotel removed all contaminated soil and remediated the land. “During construction, h2hotel followed an erosion-control plan to minimize site runoff and protect the neighbouring properties and creek bed,” says Sher. “And more than 60 per cent of the total site – including the living roof – has been left as landscaped open space to promote biodiversity. The hotel’s high-efficiency irrigation system uses one-third the water consumed by typical local landscaping.” So after visiting the local eateries, boutiques, wineries and spas, what kind of experience does h2hotel hope their guests will take with them? “Our vision was to create a relaxing, casual and comfortable environment – one that reflects the town’s chic, yet unpretentious feel,” says Sher. “We hope our guests will be able to combine the wellness of mind, body and spirit by taking in the clean and healthy eco-sensitive environment we offer. The abundant vegetation and thoughtful furnishings were created to engage the guests and encourage casual, friendly interactions; eco-inspired artwork helps soothe and stimulate the mind; free bicycles, Sunday yoga and a solar-heated pool helps them to relax Go to vivamagon line.com and unwind. Symptoms Stomach problems, acne, inability to lose weight. Health Recommendations I had no idea what was causing my stomach problems, or why my acne wouldn’t go away (I tried everything imaginable). I also couldn’t lose weight, even though I frequent the gym three times a week. A Naturopathic Doctor put me on a hypoallergenic diet that eliminated all common food allergens (dairy, gluten, caffeine, sugar). By introducing the foods one by one, I was able to see what my body could handle and what it couldn’t. I discovered that although I love anything dairy and anything that contained gluten, my body just did not know what to do with it. Ultimately, these amazing foods were causing not so amazing results! The Results I am a sugar junkie and have a healthy appetite for good pasta, so I was forced to come up with recipe ideas that kept me motivated. By throwing twists on old favourites, I was able to come up with lactose- and gluten-free meals that add variety. After implementing the dairy- and gluten-free diet, my stomach problems have disappeared, my acne has improved dramatically and I have definitely noticed a difference in my weight. name Hilary Jermyn a e 2 location Toronto, Ontario occu ation Senior Analyst, usiness Process Management

Symptoms For the majority of my life, my bowels have had a mind of their own. I was lucky if I had two bowel movements a week. After seeing my doctor and trying many different things that never lasted long or didn’t solve my problem, I saw a Naturopathic Doctor. Health Recommendations I was told to cut out all gluten. We were going to try two things: first just gluten, then gluten and dairy. Luckily, I didn’t have to cut out dairy. The Results My problem was solved within the first week of going gluten free. I was going at least once a day, which was such a big improvement! I felt better; after eating, I didn’t feel as bloated or how I was used to feeling after eating something that contained gluten. I know with summer just around the corner I will miss a nice cold beer, but other than that, the lifestyle change has been easier than I thought. It has actually made me go outside my comfort box and try new foods that I normally would have passed on. name Stacy Kar ala a e 2 location Toronto occu ation Graphic Designer

Symptoms Stomach problems, vomiting and bloating Health Recommendations My symptoms came on abruptly, so initially I thought that it was food poisoning or a virus. After they started occurring more often, I thought there might be a more serious underlying problem, so I contacted my doctor. He suggested that I might have gluten sensitivity or intolerance. I tested negatively for Celiac disease but my doctor did suggest I change my diet. I eliminated both lactose and gluten from my diet and after a month, my symptoms began to clear up. I no longer feel constantly bloated and my vomiting episodes were eliminated. The Results I have always enjoyed eating healthy foods, especially high-fibre cereals, whole-wheat bread and whole-wheat pasta. However, I found that after eating a lot of these foods, I would be bloated and my stomach would be upset. I found that there are lots of gluten-free alternatives out there that taste just as good, if not better! They have gluten-free cookies, cereal, bread, pasta and granola bars. Sometimes you can even find gluten-free bakeries! I now incorporate some wheat into my diet, but I‘m careful not to go crazy. name Rebecca Stutchbury a e 22 location Waterloo, ON occu ation Student

After kidney and liver failure and a heart attack, I finally was admitted for care as an inpatient for about a year. Health Recommendations After undergoing extreme treatment and gaining 32 kilograms (70 pounds), I left the hospital and relapsed almost immediately. When I left, I knew that stepping into a gym could kill me as I would take it to an extreme, but decided to join a yoga studio. The Results Slowly, I began to realize that yoga allowed me to tap into setting spiritual intentions which worked their way from my mat into my recovery. Over time I was able to develop amazing friendships after usually choosing to isolate myself and I am now less fearful of developing relationships. I have now regained my life with my osteoporosis improving, my hormones balancing and I am at a healthy BMI. Tea Time with Trans-herbe

It's

b bonnie siegler photo b martin lemire edi om photograph

Sitting in a Parisian café over 30 years ago, a young Johanne Dion sipped on her verbena herbal tea and was amazed by the taste. Upon her return to Montreal, Dion drew upon her food chemist background to create tea formulas with medicinal herbs. On an ensuing Provence trip, she discovered the lavender fields with its spectacular colours and fragrance. “I was in love,” says Trans-herbe founder and president, Johanne Dion. Founded in 1992, Trans-herbe has become a global sensation with its sophisticated and pleasing herbal and fl avoured 100 per cent organic and fair trade teas. While the road to well-being can be found steeped in tea, the road to Dion’s success can be found in her passion and excitement for giving people a unique experience with each tea blend. “Trans-herbe has found a niche in the premium tea market,” she says. “Our goals are the same as they were 19 years ago; to offer a unique and intense experience, surprise with different taste contrasts and innovate constantly in order to remain on top. Plus, being organic and fair traded, we are giving back to society and hopefully improving people’s lives in developing countries.” So what distinguishes Trans-herbe’s premium teas from other brands? “Our choice of flowers and herbs; the fi rst thing is to choose ones with more essential oils inside. Th at is very important.” Adds Christian Sauve, Director of Trans-herbe’s Innovative and New Business Opportunities, “It’s like having different grades of wines.” The company’s Four O’Clock teas, introduced 15 years ago, offer an overwhelming selection of colours and tastes, and is one of Dion’s favorites. “Th is is one of our best exported tea brands,” says Sauve. “Yes, we are a Canadian company, but this specific brand does not have any specific cultural reference. It’s a neutral brand because it

102 

102.VIVA_TransHerb.indd 102

can be easily adapted by consumers around the world by its noncultural reference. Four O’Clock teas are often associated with spices with intense fl avours. The newest one is Jasmine and Lotus Flower Green Tea. We were in Sri Lanka and spent extraordinary days buying fresh lotus flowers in front of temples so that when we returned to Canada we were able to capture the real essence and notes of lotus.” Teas are not just leaves anymore. The one Transherbe subsequently created is reminiscent of a fabled romance with its design, representing exquisite uniqueness. “Each box of our Four O’Clock teas has a different canvas that represents the whole experience,” continues Sauve. “For instance, our Chocolate Spice Tea signifies our experience to Mexico and drinking a chocolate, cinnamon, chili, black pepper beverage common to that area. We recreated that and gave that narrative to North American people.” Married and the mother of two daughters, both of whom work for the company and will eventually take the lead in its future development, Dion says her personal favourite tea depends on the day and time. “I cannot say I have only one. If I’m eating chicken, I’ll have a fruity tea; if I’m having beef or pork, it’s a stronger tea choice. When it’s hot, I’ll have fruity or in winter, I prefer the spices.” But there is no rule of thumb when it comes to tea time and Dion encourages people to create their own epicurean experience. “Anytime of the day is good for tea,” Dion says. “Follow your instincts. I personally like our Japanese green tea in the morning and Rooibos Chai for afternoon. There’s something very passionate and romantic about the Chocolate Spice and I prefer that in the evenings.” Overall, Dion says, “We still have the fervour of making new blends and developing teas that our customers will really enjoy.”
