Paper Cranes Nicole Nguyen | Garland High School

Traditionally, cranes are supposed to represent happiness and eternal youth. The point of the overall meaning of the crane is that this concept is present in Key Club. The Key Club organization is primarily made up of youths who strive to serve their community. As a reaction to the youth giving back to the community, happiness is evoked. The crane is symbolic in the sense that it embodies the essence of Key Club itself: the youth provoking happiness. To be more specific, there were small appearances of paper cranes as well. This itself is another meaning in and of itself. Before the paper crane was created, it was simply just a square piece of paper. However, with each fold, it progresses closer in becoming a crane. The finished product is more beautiful than what it was before because these creases gave shape to the figure. This paper crane represents the typical Key Clubber. Each individual was born an unmarked square piece of blank paper. Each fold that occurs to them is a significant event that contributes towards shaping the person that they will become. Without these folds, they are nothing because there is nothing present that helps them develop in the person that they should be. Key Club is a small yet impactful part of an individual’s life. Little does every Key Clubber know, their participation in this organization is the first Key Club-related fold out of many in their experience. This first fold is essential towards cultivating the desire and passion towards volunteering. They have initiated the first spark in their volunteering journey, making them prone to many other folds down that path. This first fold is what encourages them to become a volunteer, and it is now a part of them. Because of this first fold, they will now grow in the future to aspire to develop into something much more. At that point, it is well past the first fold, and it is no longer than just simply volunteering. These individuals will become those who serve the community because of that one fold that shaped them for this very moment. We are all burdened with particular events that shape us into the person that we are today, but Key Club is a positive burden in the sense that it is a fold that creates a lasting impression on who we are. We may never reach the ideals of the crane, but it is important to recognize that we as Key Clubbers embody the crane’s intended meaning. We are a group of youths who felt the impact of the first fold to volunteer. In doing so, we develop into an organization that strives to serve the community, bringing about happiness as a result of our efforts, just as a crane would.

ROLE OF A TREASURER

A good Treasurer is essential for any properly functioning Key Club. The office of the Treasurer is not one of the most stressful— but it is still important to the functions of the Key Club International organization. The Treasurer should be detail oriented, have strong math skills, and do their best to see that their duties are done properly so that there are no doubts about their integrity. Although many schools do not allow students to control all financial transactions, the Treasurer should still keep accurate books to enable them to give a full financial report when ever needed/requested. The roles are as followed: Treasurer Skills & General Duties – Control the Club’s money, its collection, and disbursement. – Transact all business through a school bank account (or like account). – Reconcile bank statements. – Deposit Club funds. – Collect all monies from Club projects. Understand Adult’s Roles When Dealing with Club Finances – All Treasurer’s records should always be open to inspection by the Club Officers, Faculty/ Kiwanis Advisor, school officials, etc. – The Treasurer shall have council with their advisor on all financial matters.

– The Treasurer shall understand the school/ district policy regarding student involvement in financial accounts. Meeting Attendance & Duties – Inform the Club and the Sponsoring Kiwanis Club of financial strengths and weaknesses. – Prepare a financial report for all Board of Directors meetings. Coordinate Dues Collection & Payment – Collect member dues. – Update the MUC. – Bill members for unpaid dues. – Collect dues from new members and forward them to the International Office.

CLUB BUDGET

A club budget is a quintessential report that the Club Board, Faculty Advisor, and Sponsoring Kiwanis Club needs for your club to be successful. When making a budget, make sure you separate your “Administrative Account” from your “Service Account.” This is vital, because you may not use Service Account funds for administrative purposes, but you may use Administrative Account funds for service account purposes. If you need help, visit tokeyclub.com under Treasurer Resources, there is a guide and a sample budget. Also, send it in to me (treasurer@tokeyclub.com) when it is passed by your Board!

YOUTH OPPERTUNITES FUND

The Youth Opportunities Fund, or YOF, is a grant paid by Key Club International to help a club or member with financing a service project. A club/ member may request anywhere from $100- $2,000 USD, but most projects are funded if the applicant is asking for a portion of the costs. If you would like to apply for the YOF or even if you would like to know more information on the grant and its application process, you are invited to my YOF Webinar. If you would like to come, email me (treasurer@tokeyclub.com) with your Skype Name, home club, and division so I can add you in!

YOF Webinar: September 9th, 2017, 4:00– 5:00 PM, Skype: FosterhillisKC@gmail.com

Your Club Dues

As Club Treasurer, you are tasked with collecting and sending in the collected dues into the International Office. You, and your board, can decide how much you would like your club dues to be; however, they must be under $7.00 (International Bylaws state that club dues cannot be greater than International’s dues). Also, you may not charge members for any extra costs to become a member (shirts, etc.), as once again, there is an International Bylaw against that. It is always better to charge less for member dues so you can have more members overall, as this organization is here for service— not for profit. To turn in the International and District Dues, you must add new members and delete old members in the MUC (Membership Update Center). From there, you can pay online or print an invoice to send in. If you need help with accessing the MUC, you can view the MUC Flyers on the District website (tokeyclub.com) or email me (treasurer@tokeyclub.com).
