Not Online? Why Not? The digital revolution has shaken many businesses to their core. Luxury retail has not been spared. While some luxury retailers have embraced the online world (think Burberry), many of them are more slowly coming to terms with the sea change in shopping behavior. For those of you in the luxury sector, take a look at a recent report (from my colleagues at McKinsey and Altagamma) on luxury online. In Europe, online sales are growing 28%. That’s pretty astounding. It's true that online luxury sales are still a pretty small part of overall sales. But if you take into account that more than 30% of offline sales are either directly generated or influenced by the online experience, you can see that digital is shaking things up in luxury. A few other stats that stood out for me:
to compare products, while 57% of searching for a specific product - 50% of the market is generated by full price web sites. Those companies that are investing most in this digital revolution are the ones seeing the most benefits. What will be interesting to see is how luxury retailers evolve to bring the convenience their customers demand with the high-end experience they also expect. That's quite a tight rope to walk.

Your Results Your Fault In business, the results you get can be 'relatively' proportionate to the effort you put into it. So far so good, but a problem arises when people don't do anything, or do the wrong thing to try and get results. Far too often, people will play the blame game. "i tried this to get more business happening and it didn't work" or "this and that" or "such and such"......."nothing is working!" I think its a bit like this: I want to build a house, I have some materials and i put them together but its not working! Of course not. No plan, coupled with low skills, I may end up with a house with no floor, no roof or other major structural faults. The same goes in business. You need to know something about the marketing process before deciding on the best marketing strategy for your particular business and what results you are aiming for. There will be a huge difference in the results if you do it properly. Sticking with it long enough to see good results is another thing to consider. I hear you saying "there are only so many days in the week and hours in the day".
Here is my response: If you don't like or don't have time to do certain tasks, then get someone else to do them. Outsource the task to free you up to do more of what you really want to do in the business. Many people in small businesses work long hours, often only doing the tasks necessary for the day to day running of the business during the trading hours and then after hours continuing work on other tasks such as bookkeeping etc. Stop procrastinating; either you want the business to do well or not, if not then get out of it. Stop using creative avoidance techiques to "fluff about" and get nothing done. Success is working towards any worthwhile goal, therefore get better at setting your goals. Focus on the results you want by being outcome driven. Your business should provide you with a great income and lifestyle or be able to do so in the near future. Let it be all it can be by being the best business owner/operator you can be. Being at fault should not be an option. Being successful should be your main priority!

What a great title you may say. What is the definition of the Ideal Business? One that makes a lot of money and incredible profits? One that practically runs itself? Most people would answer yes to both these questions. Imagine being able to do this in your business. Most small business owners struggle with problems involving cash flow and staff on a daily basis.
The IDEAL business
But lets continue the daydream and pretend that you have such a business. Loyal customers, great reliable staff, a healthy profit margin and the business can run nicely without you having to personally be there. Is this all there is? Job done you can now retire early or spend your days playing golf? I put it to you that a truly ideal business would be one that is able to replicate its success and multiply. Ask yourself "Can I develop and implement systems and procedures that I can put in place to create a formula from my current success and use it to reproduce that in another business"? Think about your business's structure, how information flows, the team and the culture, the values and beliefs. All the things which can cause the internal structures to remain steadfast and provide the right sort of support for growth. Now you know what makes your current business tick, you have the building blocks for ANY new business structure. It's up to you to act on the information.

Not Thinking Like Your Customers ONE BIG MISTAKE RETAILERS ARE MAKING ONLINE The average conversion rate on retailer Websites sits in the low-â€? to mid-â€?single dig-â€? LWV ,Q FRPSDULVRQ WKH DYHUDJH FRQYHUVLRQ UDWH LQ RÇş OLQH VWRUHV LV RYHU &ORVLQJ this gap could represent one of the largest sources of growth opportunity for retailers today and yet our work with retailers suggests they are not focusing on the crucial ingredients to make it happen. Retailers have a secret sauce that many multi-â€?category online retailers don't: high quality, experienced merchants who are on the front lines and understand what their customers want. This is "human intelligence," a critical component that retailers need to tap into. It's not just about massive data sets that characterizes Big Data today. Don't get me wrong -â€? Big Data is critical. But don't forget about human intelligence as well. The problem is that these experienced merchants (human intelligence) have not shift-â€? ed enough of their mindset or resources to drive Website sales or performance. To unlock the conversion potential online, retailers need a much deeper involvement from these merchants. In too many retailers, the most talented merchants are focused on store-â€?based initiatives. In this posting, let's focus on what a great set of merchants could do to dramatical-â€? ly improve internal and external site search. In the past several years, retailers have moved beyond text-â€?based search boxes and into "parametric" or "attribute-â€?based" search on their websites. The reason is simple. One box search de-â€? livers results using basic text input from the consumer. However at this basic level, results feel like a “here’s everythingâ€? display as opposed to what the customer really wants. Type in a search such as “black cocktail dressâ€?, for example, and often times the site will return windows of dresses, some black, some not, and D PL[ RI VW\OHV SULFH SRLQWV DQG ORRNV 1RQH RI ZKLFK DUH DOO WKDW KHOSIXO WR ĂŽQG WKDW ‘perfect dress’. "Parametric" search was the next step forward and provided ways for shoppers to nar-â€? row product choices by product attributes. That's a big step forward, of course. But to improve on today’s approach, retailers and merchants should make the investment to go well beyond today's typical attributes on the left side of the page. Getting to this next level re-â€? quires a deeper merchant ‘voice’ and includes merchandising concepts such as “good, better, best,â€? or “modern, traditional, transitionalâ€?. For example, for the same black cocktail dress search, she can now add attributes, like modern or traditional, hi-â€?cut, low-â€?cut, material thickness, patterns, etc. to narrow down to the things she cares most about. 7KH XSVLGH RI JHWWLQJ WKLV ULJKW LV VLJQLĂŽFDQW LQ WHUPV RI FRQYHUWLQJ EURZVLQJ WR EX\LQJ as well as upselling and cross-â€?selling as well as better knowledge of the customer.

MASTER THE ART OF THE POSSIBLE When I talk to my clients, I talk about the “art of the pos-‐ sible.” JUNE| VNM MAGAZINE | WWW.VNMMAGAZINE.NET.AU JUNE | VNM SMALL BUSINESS MAGAZIUNE | WWW.VNMMAGAZINE.NET.AU
ARE YOU MANAGING FOR THE ART OF THE POSSIBLE? There are two contrasting approaches on this issue. The first is a push-driven approach, which is when a group of technology providers are pushing forward data and models at business leaders. This approach usually involves some conversation around identifying potential and introducing a new idea. The second approach is pull, where business leaders are asking for specific solutions. In our experience, it's that second approach where you’re going to find much more success. That success is based on the “art of the possible,” i.e. getting that balance right between identifying a useful business problem to solve and the effort required to solve it. Digital is upending retail; it’s also providing retailers with the key to unlock real growth. The problem is that companies are having trouble finding the wheat amidst all the chaff. And, in general, it’s an issue on the business side of the equation, not the data. Most companies already have – or can easily get – enough data. What’s missing is a clear vision of what to do with it. When I talk to my clients, I talk about the “art of the possible.”
We think this is going to GLǺHUHQWLDWH WKH FRPSDQLHV that make the most out of data and the models versus com-‐ panies that sit on the data and aren't able to drive their busi-‐ ness to grow. WWW.VNMMAGAZINE.NET.AU | VNM SMALL BUSINESS MAGAZINE | JUNE

In light of the economic trends, changes in consumer shopping behaviour and the changing role of the store, retailers are starting to reassess their store portfolios.
Retailers seem reluctant to develop a network in stores, as they appear to fear that this will lead customers to use smart- phones or tablets to comparison shop, therefore encouraging them to purchase competitors products.
Pace of online growth is slowing
However, anecdotal Deloitte research with North American retailers suggests that providing a Wi-Fi network actually in- creases the likelihood of purchasing. Whilst some sales are lost from comparison shopping, it has EHHQ VXJJHVWHG WKDW WKLV LV PRUH WKDQ RǺVHW E\ FRQQHFWHG consumers being less likely to leave without purchasing, and spending more overall. 7KHUH DUH D ZKROH KRVW RI EHQHÎWV WKDW :L )L DFFHVV LQ VWRUH could enable: ‡ 7UDFN FXVWRPHUVª RQOLQH EHKDYLRXU LQFOXGLQJ ZKLFK FRP- petitors they are visiting and delivering communications in response to their browsing behaviour. ‡ 'HYHORS D SRRO RI FXVWRPHU GDWD VR WKH UHWDLOHU FDQ SURYLGH personalised targeting on future visits – this depends on privacy agreements. ‡ $OORZ VKRSSHUV WR FRQGXFW SHUVRQDO DFWLYLWLHV ZKLFK PHDQV more time in store and potential to impulse buy. ‡ )DFLOLWDWH SXVK DSSOLFDWLRQV VXFK DV ORFDOLVHG WDUJHWLQJ RI information, discounts and up-selling to customers’ mobile devices. ‡ $FFHVV WR VWRFN DYDLODELOLW\ IUHHLQJ XS HPSOR\HUV WLPH WR spend on more valuable activities such as customer service. ‡ 'HSOR\PHQW RI :L )L WDEOHWV DV LQWHUDFWLYH FDWDORJXHV DQG order systems.
Online sales are forecast to continue to grow 8.8% points IDVWHU WKDQ RYHUDOO UHWDLO VDOHV RYHU WKH QH[W ÎYH \HDUV Online sales are predicted to grow to reach $43 billion in 2015, accounting for 14% of all retail sales. However, as the rate of growth and outperformance for online sales slows, retailers are beginning to realise the extent to which online was compensating for lacklustre store performance. Store counts are declining In light of the negative economic conditions and slowing online growth, retailers have come to the point where they are realising the need for a reset of their store portfolios. This has been demonstrated by the contraction of retail outlets and consequently retail space. The number of retail outlets in the UK contracted by 4% in 2009, while the number of specialist clothing outlets contracted at a faster pace than the market with an 8% GHFOLQH LQ 5HWDLO VSDFH DOVR FRQWUDFWHG IRU WKH ÎUVW time in a decade in 2009 and 2010. %HWZHHQ DQG WRWDO SK\VLFDO ïRRU VSDFH GH- creased by around 12m square feet, largely as a result of insolvencies but also due to some rationalisation of store portfolios. However, over the same period, online retail added the equivalent of 25m square feet of space and now accounts for around 8% of the total retail market. How many stores should you have?
In order to capitalise fully on this opportunity, retailers will need to develop better applications to enhance the in-store experience and invest in their network connectivity. The greatest challenge around this opportunity is customer privacy for online tracking – this is a publically sensitive issue and therefore if retailers are to pursue Wi-Fi connectivity, they should ensure they maintain the trust and loyalty of their cus- tomers. ‡ 7HVFR KDV DQQRXQFHG WKH\ DUH SODQQLQJ WR RǺHU customers a free Wi-Fi internet service in its stores.

Retailers are beginning to reassess and reset their store portfolios in light of the changes in the economy and consumer behaviours. The increasing costs of operating stores, changes in consumer behaviours and the growing online opportunity coupled with the rise of shopping centres with larger catchment areas and improve- ments in infrastructure facilitating travel suggest that retailers will need fewer stores in future. Over the medium to long term we will VHH VLJQLÎFDQW GRZQVL]LQJ RI VWRUH SRUW- folios.
