Effective marketing starts with a considered, well-informed marketing strategy. A good marketing strategy helps you define your vision, mission and business goals, and outlines the steps you need to take to achieve these goals.

growth Define a set of specific marketing goals based on the business goals you listed above. These goals will motivate you and your team and help you benchmark your success. Examples of marketing goals include increased market penetration (selling more existing products to existing customers) or market development (selling existing products to new target markets). These marketing goals could be long-term and might take a few years to successfully achieve. However, they should be clear and measurable and have time frames for achievement.

Make sure your overall strategies are also practical and measurable. A good marketing strategy will not be changed every year, but revised when your strategies have been achieved or your marketing goals have been met. Also, you may need to amend your strategy if your external market changes due to a new competitor or new technology, or if your products substantially change. Similarly, as part of your marketing strategy you should develop a profile of your competitors by identifying their products, supply chains, pricing and marketing tactics. Use this to identify your competitive advantage - what sets your business apart from your competitors. You may also want to identify the strengths and weaknesses of your own internal processes to help improve your performance compared with your competition.

Using Microsoft’s motion-sensing Kinect, the futuristic technology works on walls, tables and panes of glass. It could help stores display interactive product information after hours, teachers create interactive lessons and architects as they turn a vision into reality. Best of all, the technology already has the clunkiness worked out of it and can respond appropriately to nuanced gestures, like a swipe, versus a click, for example. That means zooming in and out of maps, flipping through photos and playing Fruit Ninja in super-sized mode should pose no problems.

“We want human collaboration and information to be just one finger touch away, no matter where you are,” Ubi co-founder and chief executive Anup Chatoth wrote in a blog post. “By making it possible to turn any surface into a touch screen, we eliminate the need for screen hardware and thereby reduce the cost and extend the possibilities of enabling interactive displays in places where they were not previously feasible -such as on walls in public spaces.” Since then, the companies have worked with small and 3Fortune 500 firms, to put the technology into their conference rooms.

For years, the business world has belonged to Windows. As recently as 2008, technology research firm Forrester Research was telling companies that Windows PCs were the only machines they needed to worry about. Macs were a non-issue but not anymore. Today, organizations are openly accepting and deploying Macs on their networks. What’s more, Forrester Research has reversed course on its previous claim that the enterprise was no place for Macs, and is advising businesses to prepare for the coming Mac invasion, as more employees call on their employers to let them use Macs on the job. According to the firm’s senior analyst David Johnson, 22 percent of companies surveyed have seen an increase in the use of employee-owned Macs. Yet, 41 percent of those firms don’t allow employees to access either their corporate network or email from Macs.

Go ahead Create your job! It might sound far-fetched for some of you (while others have already done it) but itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s very possible. Not easy, mind you: it takes hard work and smarts and passion and a crap-ton of learning and a willingness to take risks and make mistakes.

ou might already know this but if you haven’t given it much thought, start to consider: what do you truly love doing? What are you passionate about? If you’re lucky you’ll have multiple answers. If

you have no answers, it’s time to start finding things to be passionate about. If you have multiple answers, just choose one. Or find ways to combine two of them (if you love sewing and Star Wars, sew Star Wars costumes and put them on eBay). Don’t be paralyzed by this choice: if it turns out this isn’t what you want then you can always start another business later. You learn by doing and making mistakes, not by analyzing every possible outcome and factor. This passion will become your dream job.

Get serious about it

Practice Put in a lot of hours of practice and doing. The more, the better. Reflect on what you’ve done and what you’ve learned, write it down. Put it in your blog so you can help others learn, but more importantly you’ll force yourself to learn from your own experience.

You need a lot of money to get started, right? No. I explicitly reject the idea that “you have to spend money to make money”. Sure, that can work, or it can lead to a mountain of debt and monthly expenses that greatly exceed your income and possibly failure before you’ve had the chance to succeed. I started my business with nothing. Zero dollars. In fact I had less than nothing: I was highly in debt and broke. I started with free online services (there are plenty — I used Blogger.com and Google Adsense and Google Analytics, but those are just a few examples). I refused to even buy my own domain until I made more money from my business than

There is something incredibly empowering about seizing control of your life and creating the job you want, rather than waiting for it to happen or waiting for someone to give it to you. out. How can you start your business with nothing? I won’t create an exhaustive list but here are some examples: Someone I know wanted to start a marketing business. She didn’t need an office and staff and stationery — all she needed was her laptop (she had one), her skills (she had the experience), her contacts (she had a lot of them), and for people to know she was out there. And for that last bit, it just takes some … marketing skills. Hit businesses up and offer her services. Network online and gain clients that way. If she has expenses for a job she can charge those to the client. My sister wanted to start a ballet school. I suggested instead of building a studio and being hugely in debt, she start by going to private schools and offering to create an after-school ballet program at the schools. Parents would love it, the schools would benefit because parents want services like that, and she has practically no expenses. My other sister wanted to become a personal trainer. I encouraged her to start in her home, with minimal equipment, or go to her clients’ homes and businesses, or do outdoor bootcamps. She did and is amazing at it.

Love to play video games? Start a site where you show people how to become elite players. Offer coaching. Start an online store where you sell stuff you make. Teach people how to do whatever you’re good at. They’ll pay you. Want to be a chef? Host dinner parties with gourmet cuisine, and charge $50 a head. Sell tickets in advance and use some of that money to buy the food and some dishes.

Again, these are just a few ideas. Sure, there are some businesses that require an initial investment but I suggest you find ones that don’t. Start free or cheap, borrow space from friends if necessary, and get started.

Make Meetings Fun -- Or At Least, Not Suck How many times have you been in a meeting that you knew right away would be dull and potentially pointless? The ineffectiveness of so many meetings can be remedied simply by revamping the first and last five minutes.

ry these five tips for your next meeting:

. Set an example from the start. If you want energy and engagement from your team, you need to embody those qualities while they walk through the conference room doors. We are highly empathetic creatures. Within a tenth of a second, your team gauges and mirrors your mood and energy levels. They look to you for clues about the tone of the meeting. If you have a dark cloud over your head, the energy in the room sinks and the meeting drags. If you are positive and energetic, the meeting will be more lively and productive.Now, here’s where it gets a little tricky. You too are wired to pick up on the energy levels of others and mirror them back. Don’t let any negativity sway you from your assertive state. Stay focused. If you want employees to be friendly, upbeat and engaged, you have to be friendly, upbeat, and engaged. Lead with your body language and tone.

. Make a connection with everyone in the room. Some people have a habit of starting meetings by reading the agenda. Everyone else tilts their heads down to follow along, not making eye contact and certainly not connecting. The point of meeting face-to-face is to, well, meet faceto-face. Make it a priority to build and maintain rapport so you can foster collaboration. Reading an agenda shouldn’t be your meeting opener. It doesn’t have to be a long monologue, just a few sentences about why everyone is together and what you hope to accomplish to set the tone.

. Remind everyone of your greater mission. Don’t get so

focused on the minutia of a meeting that you forget to step back and see the big picture. Remind everyone they are working towards a higher purpose and not just clocking meeting minutes. How does this meeting fit into the overall vision? How will this help the company? How will it benefit the team? How will the discussion move things forward? You will get more engagement if everyone sees the bigger picture.

. Provide action steps. Before everyone scatters to their next appointment, make sure they know their next action steps. Rather than delegating or reading off who is in charge of doing what, ask everyone in the room to say a few words about what they are personally responsible for. This helps make sure everyone is on the same page and gives you an opportunity to listen and observe. Pay attention to what they say and how they say it. Have they “bought in” to the idea? Is their body language congruent with what they are saying? This is your chance to do some preemptive damage control. You miss out on such valuable information when you dictate the do-to list at the end of the meeting.

. Acknowledge successes. Recognition is an important part of building a positive culture. It’s easy to get caught up with deadlines and think there will be high-fives and group hugs when everything is done, but that rarely happens. Once one item is complete, another is right around the corner. Recognition and praise should be on your mental checklist for every meeting.

Gain trust and respect before proceeding. You know the old saying “do not put the cart before the horse.” Expect nothing from this first meeting and be lucky if you receive an invitation back. This is Dubai, not your everyday recruiting firm. Do not shake hands. Once again, this is not a western country. Muslim women may feel uncomfortable and that could cost you a deal. Let the woman be the first to extend a handshake. It respects their beliefs and gives them a sense of control in the interaction. Do not go to Dubai during summer months. While the city is a major hub with much to offer, unfortunately no one is advanced enough to control the weather, well not yet. So when the big boys are out to play, do not waste your time or money. Wait until the proper decision makers are back in town before heading out to do business. Do not forget to brush up on Islam culture. There is more to it outside of high school history books.

While it is readily apparent that entrepreneurial giants like Steve Jobs or Walt Disney are possessed of a rare genius, there is an increasingly growing belief that is lead by writers like Geoff Colvin, Malcolm Gladwell and Carol Dweck which says that the skills of entrepreneurship can be learned and that anyone can become a successful entrepreneur

through keeping an open mind and mastering a few key skills. Through my own years of study of entrepreneurial success I have learned that all great entrepreneurs have 7 common habits irrespective of their field of business. Further like Colvin, Gladwell and Dweck I believe that these habits can be learned. Over the next few months I will help unpack what I call the 7 Habits of Highly Successful Entrepreneurs. In this issue we look at the first common habit – being Contrarian. Habit 1 – Be Contrarian All great entrepreneurs are contrarian by nature. They find out what the pack are doing and then do something that Is either totally opposite or drastically different from everyone else. Being contrarian is not easy. You get a lot of flack from everyone, particularly when you meet with temporary failure as is almost bound to happen in any endeavour. Albert

Great Entrepreneurs So the question is how can one be contrarian in a market? There are basically 3 ways in which this can be done. 1. Create a new market within an industry. One of the best ways to be contrarian is to look for an area within your industry that no one is occupying and then dominate it. A classic example of this is Red Bull. Just over 15 years ago the market was dominated by soft drinks and virtually no one had even heard of energy drinks. By positioning themselves differently within the soft drink market, Red Bull has in a relatively short time become the dominant player in the energy soft drinks market. In fact, the entire business model is built around a single product.

Einstein once said “great spirits have always encountered violent opposition from mediocre minds”. This is so true in business. The history of business shows that the greatest opportunities are found during the lowest points in the economy when everyone is giving up. It is said that more millionaires were created during the great depression than at any other time in American history. More recently the great recession of 2007 saw the formation of the fastest growing company ever. Within just 18 months Groupon received a buyout offer from Google for a staggering $6billion! Developing the habit of being contrarian positions you to take advantage of situations when everyone is throwing in the towel. You welcome adversity as a friend. As one of my clients Ian Head said after a record year of profits during the recession – “If this is a recession we would like to have one every year”. That indeed is the power of contrarian thinking!

Another great example of a contrarian approach was Henry Ford. Back just before his day the proliferation of the motor car was so violently opposed by the powerful horse and buggy transport company lobbyists that there was legislation in some places requiring a man with a flag to walk ahead of a motor car to warn of its oncoming. Apart from this violent opposition there were barely any paved roads for a car to run on. Yet thanks to Ford, in just a few short years the motor car became the dominant mode of transport on land and the Ford motor company became the largest of its kind in the world rapidly producing over 1 billion dollars in revenue. Today the Ford Motor Company is still a dominant player in the automobile industry! Yet another great example of being contrarian was Ray Kroc. Kroc branded a service and proved himself an industrial pioneer no less capable than Henry Ford. Before Kroc there were hamburger stands everywhere that sold burgers, fries and milk shakes. Although Kroc did not create the concept of the chain restaurant, he saw a niche and developed the plan to transform

burgers, fries and shakes into a huge empire. By imposing a strict process discipline on the production of hamburgers, french fries and milk shakes like Ford did for cars and then developing a sophisticated operating and delivery system, he ensured that the French fries customers bought anywhere in the United States tasted exactly the same. But that was not what earned Kroc a staggering $500 million fortune! Despite having more than 200 McDonald’s outlets across the country by 1960 he was barely turning a profit. In yet another great example of being contrarian Kroc used real estate as a financial lever that made McDonald’s a viable operation. Kroc set up a real estate company buying up tracts of land and acting as a landlord to eager franchisees. With this step, McDonald’s began to generate real income, and the company took off. In amassing a staggering fortune Kroc transformed the nation’s cultural landscape and forged an industry that is among America’s greatest exports even today after more than 50 years. Truly a great testament to the awesome power of being contrarian! 2. Transform the rules in an existing market A second strategy for being contrarian is to change the game in your market. Great entrepreneurship is not about being the first to bring out the latest gizmo or whiz bang product. In fact throughout history there have been few great entrepreneurs who actually discovered something new. In most cases it is about taking existing products and services and combining them in a different way to unlock value! A great example of this is Starbucks. Back before Schultz bought the company in 1985 coffee was served as an add-on in most places in the United States. In fact many restaurants even offered it free after a meal. No one back then could have even dared imagine charging 3 dollars for a cup of coffee! The key to Schultz’s vision was simple: create community. The idea came to

At Starbucks, Schultz saw a means to bring people together in America, Howard Schultz had a vision to bring the Italian coffeehouse tradition back to the United States. A place for conversation and a sense of community. A third place between work and home. Today, with more than 15,000 stores in 50 countries, Starbucks is the premier roaster and retailer of specialty coffee in the world. And yes they charge premium prices for their coffee in addition to changing the habits of competitors giving it away for free! Another great example is the story of the iPhone. Heralded as one of the most revolutionary products of our time the iPhone has sold more than 100 million units since its inception. Yet apart from some onscreen features the iphone did not create any new technologies- It simply brought together the mobile phone, the mp3 player and internet browsing and made them cool to use! 3. Being Contrarian in pricing A third way to be contrarian is through innovative pricing. Because most businesses in any industry are pretty much the same they essentially can compete in only one area and that is price. Creating a super premium priced product can quickly be a powerful contrarian strategy. Hastens is a classic example of entering such a market. Hastens beds can cost as much as $150,000! Despite the price tag Hastens has a huge demand for its products and customers sometimes have to wait many months for the delivery of their orders. Daigeo is another great example of a contrarian price strategy. Its top end whiskey sells for as much as $160,000 per bottle and the company says that they are always sold out. Innovative pricing was instrumental in transforming Microsoft from what would have otherwise been a company worth a few million dollars to the multi-billion dollar powerhouse it is today. During the

early days of the personal computer, companies manufactured software and sold it to the hardware developers for installation. Bill Gates changed the rules of the game through innovative pricing. Instead of selling MS DOS to IBM for its personal computers he chose instead to lease it for every computer. This gave Microsoft a royalty for every personal computer IBM sold. A few years later, when companies like Dell, Compaq, Fujitsu and IBM were battling to dominate the exploding pc market, all of them ran off the same Microsoft operating system. What if Bill Gates had sold IBM its operating system instead of leasing it? So how can you as a small business owner develop the habit of being contrarian? It starts with developing an attitude. Simply decide to be contrarian. Just train yourself to look for opportunities through doing things that are different from everyone else in your industry. Look for small differences on a regular basis and soon you will develop the habit. One of the best places to start is looking at your marketing. In every industry (without fail) you find that about 95 percent of the participants position themselves almost exactly the same way as everyone else. In fact if you were to take a look at the yellow pages section for your industry and separate the names of all the businesses from their contact numbers, mix them all up and then put them back together again you would do very little damage. Simply writing your Yellow Pages Ad differently will almost immediately position you as different from over 95% of your competitors. Maintaining an attitude of thinking contrarian requires developing a peer group that has a similar mindset. While industry associations are a great place to network for potential business opportunities they are probably the biggest killers of a contrarian attitude because as mentioned earlier everyone thinks the

same way. You must have a peer group drawn from diverse industries.
