Make Magic Happen We have conjured up some tantalizing textiles to tempt you this autumn. Mix together our seasonal selections of prints that range from romantic to dynamic, toss in a dash of bouclĂŠ, essence of knit, and stir with suitings for a magical new fall wardrobe.

Fall 2017

Trick...or Treat??

We begin our Fall Catalog with rich burgundy, dark turquoise and pale coral in a variety of fibers and weaves. First we present the wine onion skin knit, Samhain Sheer, which has a lot of stretch both lengthwise and crosswise. This textured knit is ideal for light tops that drape, scrunch and ruche, or make a simple top to wear over a bandeau. Moving on we find Samhain Renova, a poly/rayon/spandex blend suiting that has a dull satin finish. This rich burgundy stretch woven looks similar to a cotton sateen and will tailor beautifully into any number of separates. Samhain Talavera was so named because the print looks similar to the Spanish Talavera tiles. This is the first of several double-woven cotton gauze fabrics in this issue, all of which are dark colors with small prints. It’s so refreshing to offer darker colors on soft cotton gauze. We envision these prints as tunics and loose shirts worn with slacks or a skirt from the Samhain Renova.

Samhain Collection Autumn winds will soon bring a chill, dead leaves will crunch beneath our feet, and Halloween stores will popup as if conjured by witches themselves. In this issue we delve into the origins of Halloween, which date back to the ancient Celtic tradition of Samhain (pronounced SOWwin). The Insolur Celts - those belonging to Ireland and the British Isles - broke the year down into light and dark. New beginnings came from darkness, so a new day started at sundown and likewise the new year began at the start of winter. Winter for the Celts began with the month of Samhain, which later corresponded to November 1 on the ancient Julian 10 month calendar. It was celebrated as an end to summer and the harvest, and a start to winter and darkness. The Celts believed that ghosts of the dead would come back to earth at the start of Samhain. The Druid priests built giant bonfires to scare the souls of the ghosts away, and the people engaged in activities that foretold futures of love and marriage and death.

New Look #6163 “Misses’ Separates”

The softness of Samhain Galleria is cuddle-worthy for sure. Enjoy this deep burgundy double knit as any number of knit tops or even a retro sweater-dress. Samhain Paisley, a full bodied stretch-woven cotton sateen suiting, will be a knock-out straight skirt to go with either of the solid knits shown here. Or make a stunning jacket to wear over a dress of the Samhain Renova. If you love printed slacks, this will surely find its way into your closet! We were floored at how perfectly Samhain Blues jersey knit in deep turquoise matched the sateen pirnt. It has a beautiful drape and a lot of stretch.

This piece will stand alone as a sheath dress, or you can make a jacket to wear over either of its surrounding solid knits. The perfect pair for Samhain Mandala is Samhain Surprise. This textured semi-sheer knit really brings out the light color in the printed sateen suiting.

FitNice Systems “Swing Jacket”

We love this trio. The two prints are packed with dynamic colors, and the black twill is a wonderful basic to blend with them. The first print is Samhain Bouquet, a bold ITY knit floral with ample stretch both lengthwise and crosswise. This beauty can become a body conscious dress, a cap sleeve top, a flowing skirt, or fun pajama style pants. The second print is Samhain Merry, a powerfully bright floral print on black cotton sateen. This stretch suiting begs to be a jacket worn over any color solid top. The colors may be bright, but the black background in both prints make them more appropriate for autumn. We found a lovely black all cotton twill we call Samhain Night to pair with either print should you need a solid suiting for a skirt, slacks, vest or jacket. FitNice Systems “Princess Seam Dress”

Our next collection brings forth several wonderful evergreen and olive options for your wardrobe, yet we start with the one pop of additional color, the plum peachskin. Alhalowmas Plum is a medium weight polyester with a soft face. It is ideal for skirts that need some body, as well as more elegant or constructed blouses. We loved the way it brought out the hint of plum in Alhalowmas Mosaic, the second of our double-woven cotton gauze fabrics. We do have a perfect green peachskin to match the gauze as well, and you will see a mustard double-knit later on that also pairs well. There really is no reason not to try this soft, breathable fabric.

Dana Marie #1029 “Asymmetry”

Nearly identical to our sold out Micro-fleece from last year is this evergreen sweatshirt fleece we call Alhalowmas Plush. The face is tightly knit and should take embroidery well, while the reverse is super soft fleece to keep you snuggly warm. It’s very wide, so you don’t need to buy much unless you want to make gifts for loved ones.

Alholomas Collection Early Christianity sought to incorporate pagan rituals to ease conversion of local people during its expansion through Europe. The traditional springtime celebration of All Martyrs Day was moved to November 1 in the 8th century and expanded to include all saints as well. The Middle English “All Saints Day” translated to “Alholowmesse”, which then became All-hallowmas and then All Hallows Day. The night prior to this became known as All Hallows Eve, and over a period of centuries become Hallows Evening and then shortened to Hallowe’en. Remember how the Celts started their days at sundown? As they were converting to Christianity, they still lit the bonfires to scare off the ghosts on Samhain, the sundown prior to the Christian date of November 1, so All Hallows Eve became associated with ghosts at nightfall on October 31.

Alhalowmas Bouclé is truly a show-stopper. Sew it as you would any knit to make a cardigan or plush pullover top or sweater. Olive and black loops of yarn bring plenty of texture to this ultimate fall fabric. Wear your new bouclé top with a straight skirt or slacks from Alhalomas Twill. This cotton rich textile in deep evergreen will travel and wear well because of the added spandex. With plenty of stretch along the grain and across the grain, sew this stretch-woven into any number of suiting separates with built-in ease. Alhalomas Paisley silk took our breath away - the design is complex, but since it is tone-on-tone it becomes understated and elegant. Its flowing nature begs to be sewn into a fluid blouse.

We hid a fun trick among all the treats - Guising Angles is a reversible stretch suiting manufactured with more stretch lengthwise than crosswise. Cut your sewing patterns cross-grain so the stretch wraps around your body. The small design of pumpkin, rust, brown, black and cream will blend well with many wardrobe options, and you can use the opposite side as a contrast for accent.

What could be better in fall than a dress made from Sophia Double Knit? Guising Pumpkin is a spicy orange ponte di Roma double knit that is flattering to wear, and it will look fantastic when paired with the reversible stretch suiting that precedes it. If you prefer to wear your double knit as a skirt or casual slacks, top it with Guising Mandala. This polyester blouseweight print captures all the autumn colors on a greyish-white base. The overall print has a large oval repeat, so we recommend you find a pattern with very few seams, like Loes Hinse #1003 Cap Sleeve Dress & Top or Textile Studio #1201 Basic Top.

Guising Collection Many ancient religious customs continue today with no religious connection left. The northern Celts of Scotland practiced “guising” - or “galoshin” - as they disguised their children as ghosts and ghouls on Samhain and avoid the ire of the visiting spirits. The children would go door to door and receive food like an apple or nuts to further help protect them. This tradition expanded to Ireland and the Isle of Man with “mumming and guising”, going door to door reciting poetry or songs and being rewarded with food. In 1735, Great Britain’s Parliament instituted The Witchcraft Act in the hopes of calming the witch hunt hysteria sweeping the land by allowing anyone accused of witchcraft to be imprisoned instead of killed. The act forbid pork and pastries to be handed out on Halloween. Fear not, for in 1951 The Witchcraft Act was repealed and replaced with The Fraudulent Mediums Act, and the ban on pork and pastry was lifted. Once again the children were allowed to be given pork pies as treats. Hooray!

Woven with an olive silk dupion weft and dark magenta silk taffeta warp, Guising Fern is a captivating iridescent specimen. Play around with angles to get different color effects in your garments. Whether you choose to make a long jacket to embroider and wear to holiday parties, or you just want to make a loose knee-length skirt to wear to work, this fabric can be dressed up or down with the right coordinates. One such coordinate is Guising Woodland, a fascinating multicolored cotton batik from Hoffman of California. The base cloth was died in various shades of olive and moss, and then a zigzag design was stamped onto it in wax. The fabric was dyed again in many berry and melon colors, before the wax was removed to reveal the protected greens below. This can be a wonderful top on its own, or use it to line your dupioni jacket.

Magic Collection In medieval Europe the idea of sorcery was developing. Learned men could go on to harness spiritual powers and brewed potions that healed the sick. They could read the stars and foretell future cosmic events. These men were held in high esteem, such as the legendary Merlin. The term witch stems from wicca which means wise. The church discouraged the idea of magic, and often said the practices were more scientific than spiritual. That all changed in 1487 with the publication of Heinrich Kramer’s Malleus Maleficarum (Hammer of Witches). Kramer proposed that “women’s spiritual weakness” and “natural proclivity for evil” made them “susceptible to the temptations of the devil.” Hetta Howes, PhD wrote in 2015 “(Heinrich) believed that ‘all witchcraft comes from carnal lust’, and that women’s ‘uncontrolled’ sexuality made them the likely culprits of any sinister occurrence.” For the next 300 years Europe saw the mas hysteria of witch hunts result in the burning, drowning and murders of millions of people accused of witchcraft, hundreds at a time. This period in European history coincided with “The Little Ice Age” (roughly 1300-1800 CE) when the climate was much colder due to inactivity of sunspots. Glaciers expanded, crops failed due to longer winters and colder, wetter springtimes. Tens of thousands of people starved, and pestilence like The Black Death killed millions more. Hunger and disease cause rash behavior, and scapegoating witches was a spiritual cleansing to rid communities of the devil as well as eliminating hundreds more mouths to feed.

When Magic Filigree (page 13) entered our warehouse we thought of romantic billowing blouses and long, flowing skirts. It is ornate with scroll and leaf designs in dark teal, pumice, pumpkin, steel with cream and black accents. The intricate design has some places where the orange dye is slightly off-set, but does not detract from the overall appearance. If you plan on traveling, or you like easy care fabrics, add this beauty to your wardrobe. As a perfect solid to pair with the two prints on this page we present Magic Jersey, a dark spiced-pumpkin lightweight rayon knit imported from Italy. This soft option has beautiful drape and will look lovely as a dress, blouse, skirt or pajama style pants. Another of our double-woven gauze fabrics, Magic Talavera beautifully blends the dark teal with the accent of spiced pumpkin, and some accents in brown, mustard, white and black. Have you chosen which top or tunic you will make from this yet? How about the Nine Lives Vest?

Familiar Collection The witch’s familiar was an animal with magical qualities serving as a helper. Familiars could be frogs or owls, but most often were cats. Celtic mythology glorified the “fairy cats” - fearsome and large black cats with a spot of white on the chest. These were undoubtedly based on the Scottish Wildcat, or Kellas Cat, a rare hybrid that can grow to 4 feet long and hunt like a cougar. Some tales purport that the fairy cat was really a witch who could transform into a cat 8 times. If a witch transformed a 9th time, it would be permanent - thus the origin of cats having 9 lives. On Samhain people would leave saucers of milk outside for the fairy cats, and these deities would either bless the house for the treat, or curse the cows if no milk was left. During the witch hunts of medieval Europe the witches’ familiars often suffered the same fate as the witch. Keep in mind that cats eat rats, and rats spread disease, so the killing of thousands of cats may have actually helped the spread of the Black Death through Europe. Or maybe that was the revenge of the Fairy Cat....

Divination Collection

Angela Wolf #1123 “The Ruched-T”

Divination, or the practice of foretelling the future, is a rich part of Celtic Samhain tradition and became the foundation for some of today’s most beloved Halloween games. The Celts believed that foods had certain powers, that apples were connected to immortality and hazelnuts held divine wisdom. This is why they were popular treats to hand out to the mumming children on Samhain. The tradition of bobbing for apples was a romantic divination. The apples were named for various young men, and women tried to catch in their mouth the apple named for the man she fancied success on the first try meant love was destined. Another popular divination involved roasting two hazelnuts near a fire, one named for the roaster and one named for the person the roaster fancied. If the hazelnuts roasted quietly side by side then love would occur, but if the nuts jumped and hissed away from the heat love was doomed. Bonfires also had mystic properties. These were said to be spiritually cleansing, powerful like the sun. Torches were lit from these fires and carried around houses several times for spiritual protection, and then the hearths within were lit from these mystically imbued flames. Silhouettes #2010 “Three-piece Yoga Skirt”

The last of our pontes for this issue is this wonderful Divination Mocha. We seem to do most of our sewing in the fall, maybe to get ready for the holidays or to stay in on cold and blustery days. Knits are the easiest and most forgiving fabrics to sew. Whip up several basic garments from this all-purpose neutral and you won’t be sorry!

Presenting Divination Angles, another reversible stretch suiting, a heavier weight, very stable double knit. A full bodied, heavy handed fabric such as this is ideal for constructed garments such as jackets, slacks, straight dresses and skirts. Remember that this is knit with more stretch going lengthwise than cross-wise, so cut your pattern out cross-grain. The tiny shapes of tan, caramel, copen, navy and grey are printed on the face while the reverse is a beautiful solid grey, so use this reversibly for more fashion options. To soften the collection we added Divination Flecks, a heathered cotton blend jersey knit that is deliciously soft. Pull out your Ruched-T by Angela Wolf and get sewing!

La Fred #112 “Iris Skirt”

Yardage for Cutting Cross-wise: Most of the time we cut our patterns along the grain, but once in a while we need to cut across the grain. So, how much yardage do you need? Just lay out your pattern and measure each piece at its widest part - if your piece gets laid on the fold, you will need to account for both the left side and the right side. Then add 1/8 - 1/4 yard for wiggle room (depending how many pieces you have).

p. 23

Talk about a fall floral option, Divination Sprigs combines flecked steel grey with caramel and tan and a light cream accent on mottled dark brown cotton broadcloth. This cotton print from Hoffman of California is waiting to be sewn into a button down blouse, a boat neck top, or a seasonal vest. Wear your new print top over slacks or a skirt from Divination Latte, a tan stretch cotton suiting. It has body like a light denim, and softness like a cotton gabardine. If you sew for work, plan on making several separates from this to wear with, well, everything - gotta love neutrals! And it takes embroidery beautifully! We couldn’t help ourselves when this grey-blue cotton shirting came into our hands. Divination Steel is lightweight, so those of you in southern/ warmer regions will appreciate this as a fantastically transitional option.

Wool, silk and Lurex® come together in this shimmering light taupe, lightweight suiting. There is 10% stretch along the grain, so lay your pattern out cross-grain to get that stretch going around your body. Lantern Shimmer is so lightweight, it will be just as perfect as a jacket and skirt in Chicago as it would be as a sheath dress in Scottsdale. Last year we offered a fabric called Cassia Heather that sold out very quickly. We did a double take when we saw Lantern Heather,

because it looks nearly identical to Cassia Heather. But our new Lantern Heather sweater knit is all rayon. Hurry and order before this one sells out too! Another of our stretch cotton suitings, Lantern Bark has some tonal variations that give some visual depth to the fabric. Tailor a jacket and slacks, a sheath dress or skirt, and even a vest that can be worn with so many wardrobe options.

Lantern Collection The mystical property of fire continues with the Celtic Seán Na Gealaí. This has been translated as both Jack o’Lantern as well as will-o’-the-wisp. Thousands of years ago the Celts would carve lanterns from root veggies like turnips and potatoes and light them from the inside with a bit of the Samhain bonfire. The lanterns were placed on posts along roads so wanderers would have an illuminated and protected path and not be taken by the visiting ghosts. Then came the story of Stingy Jack, a man who caught the devil twice through cunning and trickery and freed the devil on conditions that the devil would not bother him or claim his soul after death. When Jack died after a long life, heaven rejected him for his trickery, and the devil rejected him because of their agreement, so Jack was condemned to the eternal night carrying a carved turnip lantern with a burning coal. He was known as Jack of the Lantern, or Jack o’Lantern. When the Irish came en masse to the United States during the Great Potato Famine in the 1800s, they found our native pumpkins a much better option for these lanterns.

Your eyes do not deceive you. You are missing a swatch of Lantern Mottled. The supplier was not able to ship us our full order, but this shibori rayon knit was such a perfect match we had to still offer it to you. The colors perfectly mimic those found in Lantern Heather. This lightweight rayon jersey is soft to the touch and drapes well. The shibori design gives it a tie-dye effect in grey and a light taupe that has a rose cast. Anyone who would like a swatch of this can contact Customer Service and we will send one to you right away.

All the suggestions we made for Lantern Bark hold true for Lantern Graphite. The striations really give it a richness. This cotton rich fabric has just enough spandex added to give you some built-in ease. Lantern Stones lightweight polyester print will look great as a blouse. It can also be a fantastically stylish lining for your new graphite jacket. Hey, Coco Chanel famously sewed the same print as both a dress and a lining for a coordinated jacket, so why not carry on that tradition and make an outstanding ensemble?

Resurgence Collection Prior to the mid-19th century there really was no Halloween in the United States. When the flood of Irish arrived in the mid-19th century, they brought their Samhain based Hallowe’en traditions with them such as Jack o’Lanterns, apple bobbing, mumming and guising. By the 1920s the Hallowe’en traditions were more tricks than treats with vandalism by rowdy youth causing more than $100,000 in property damage. This was made worse by the Great Depression, when the youth added physical assaults and violence into the night. Communities began to organize activities such as parties and they coordinated groups of children to go door to door in safe neighborhoods to collect treats. This ended briefly during the sugar rationing of World War II, but resumed with the baby boomers in the 1950s. Both Charles Schultz and Disney first included Halloween in their cartoons in the early 1950s, and since then it has become the second largest commercial holiday, grossing over $6 billion annually.

Loes Hinse #1003 “Cap Sleeve”

This fun opaque and sheer knit is for the sporty dresser indeed! Resurgence Lanes features ribbons of dark plum knit saddle stitched onto a dark plum mesh. The peeka-boo effect is very sexy if you simply wear a bra underneath. For a more modest look, wear a camisole. Make sure to cover up this fall with our wonderfully textured Resurgence Bouclé. Loops of grey, lavender, plum and black yarns crisscross to form a plaid design. Line this with Ambiance for a fall jacket, or Kasha Satin Back Flannel for a longer winter coat. We think this will look beautiful as a boxy jacket with knee-length skirt to wear to the office. We know Resurgence Charm feels like a lightweight cotton flannel, but it is really a shirting. We have seen fabrics like this in men’s ready-to-wear shirts selling for over $100. It feels so good to the touch, and the warm plum gives richness to the medium grey. The yarns have been twisted to make this less likely to wrinkle. Enjoy wearing this fabric all winter long.

Salem Collection We would be remiss to write about Halloween in America without mentioning Salem, Massachusetts. Although the infamous witch trials of the 1690s predates America’s love for Halloween by a couple hundred years, the town has embraced Halloween as its patron holiday. The witch trials began when two young girls had convulsive fits, with screaming and throwing things about, contorting their bodies and uttering strange sounds. When lucid, they complained of pinching and pin-prick sensations on their bodies. Other people slowly began to display similar effects. This was deemed to be witchcraft, and scapegoats were sought, tried and hanged. Recent research shows a possible natural reason for this odd and somewhat violent behavior - ergotism. Rye flour can develop a fungus called ergot that becomes a hallucinogenic drug in rye based breads. When ingested, ergot can inflict the person with myriad ill effects including vomiting, violent convulsions, itching and tingling, weakness and numbness, gangrene, confusion and death. This fungus thrives in cold winters with wet springs, much like the Little Ice Age of medieval Europe, during which outbreaks of ergotism were called St. Anthony’s Fire. Now Salem embraces it’s notorious history and capitalizes on it with parties, neighborhood events, and commercial sales for the entire month of October.

Salem Scarlet Web is a show-stopper! This double-knit has a base of rich black with a top layer of laser cut holiday red. When you sew, keep the pattern simple, no princess seams or piecework, and really let the design be the conversation starter. The tightly woven crepe texture of Salem Darkness, coupled with its rich black tone, make up this stunning cloth that can be added to your wardrobe as endless amounts of garments. Make a little black dress to wear with a jacket of the Salem Scarlet Web or under a cardigan of Salem Pinch. The crepe can be sewn into a skirt or slacks to wear with a top of all the fabrics in this collection. It can also become a lovely blouse to wear with slacks from Salem Pepper. Did we mention this stretch crepe comes in other colors? View all the Martino Crepes on our website, or call Customer Service for available colors. Earlier this year we offered you this rayon batik in black on red (VF172-51 Regency Batik). It sold out. So now we have the striking reverse in Salem Batik with red on black. Don’t miss out on this exceptional fabric! This batik is dyed on a base cloth of rayon challis so it drapes beautifully.

Talk about your Christmas Red! Wowza! If you needed a top for a holiday party, Salem Crimson is perfect for you. This ponte di Roma double knit feels a little like a lightweight Scuba Knit (rather than a Sophia knit). It will be lovely when you add some festive trim or embroidery. This is sturdy and stable enough to wear as slacks and a jacket in addition to becoming that red top. Just sayin’. So, whether you wear slacks made from the elegant black crepe or the bright red ponte, have a top sewn from Salem Pinch ready in the closet to toss on for an evening out. We picked this one up from one of our favorite Chicago designers, and she adores anything textured. You can even sew this reversibly - play around with it. Our final fabric to offer you this issue is Salem Pepper, a handsome black and white polyester suiting that looks like wool. Tailor this into slacks you can wear anytime, a matching jacket, and even a stunning shirt for a handsome man.
