Season’s Greetings!

Character Collection ‘Tis the season to be jolly. Here in the States we are inundated with Santa Claus, his elves, his wife and his reindeer. But that’s not necessarily the case in other countries. Places with ancient roots that pre-date Christianity, founded in pagan traditions, boast a cast of characters that have adapted over time to become fixtures from December 5 through January 5 - from the eve of the feast of Saint Nicholas to Epiphany. Join us as we travel across the sea and delve into some very different holiday traditions. Meet seven exceptional European and Scandinavian characters and their companions. Learn their origin stories as well as how they appear today. If we feature the land of your ancestors, maybe you will reconnect with your cultural heritage and share these stories and traditions with your friends and family. p.2

Oh the possibilities! When you look at this rich tapestry do you envision a smart, boxy hip-length jacket to wear over a silk taffeta dress? Or maybe you picture Character Tapestry as a dramatically long jacket? Is the romantic side of you begging for a frock coat? We received no fiber content information for this stunning piece, so our best guess is a blend of polyester and Lurex®, perhaps with a bit of cotton. We are recommending dry cleaning to be safe, but feel free to do your own testing for washing at home. Silk taffeta used to be the mainstay of court clothing, the choice fabric for nobility. We love the richness of Character Taffeta which weaves together a brassy gold weft with a fine black warp. When the weft and warp are different colors, the silk is referred to as a “shot” silk, but can also be called “changeable” or “iridescent.” The use of two contrasting colors provides the smooth weave with a depth of character that otherwise would be lacking. Construct a princess seamed top to wear with a skirt sewn from our black wool VF186-04, and a jacket of our tapestry VF186-01, or either of the brocades VF186-03 or VF186-08. The first of two satin brocades in this collection, Character Primo is a simple yet fun garnet polyester low luster satin with diamond shapes and dots of black and gold. This is a wonderful choice for a lined jacket, dress, or skirt for the holidays.

It’s been a while since we offered a lovely medium weight black wool with a little character. They are getting harder and harder to find in the quantity we need for our catalog production. Make sure you order Character Classique and treat yourself to a new wool dress, skirt or jacket. For those of you who love to wear reds, we found this wonderful blouseweight silk we named Character Garnet. Whether you choose to whip up a sweet shell, or sew a flowing blouse, we are sure you will love wearing this warm color and light weave. Angela Wolf #3145 “The Kate Skirt”

Ready to put some tinsel to the season? We sure are! This catalog is full of fun options to add twinkle to your winter wardrobe, and Character Shimmer is a shining example of that. Garnet and gold combine in a soft sweater knit that will be easy to sew and wear all winter long. Character Dupioni features slubs in the gold weft, providing texture to this shot silk. The underlying black warp threads add depth of color. Its medium weight and full body make it an ideal garment choice for separates. Stitch it into for a silk shirt or shell, or line it for a light jacket and skirt. Look at how beautifully the color picks up the gold in the following fabric brocade. Black is safe, but not very festive, so we offer you this black-with-attitude. Create a jacket or sheath dress from this low luster satin with dots of cream and gold on a diamond brocade. For a fun contrast, pair Character Secundo with its garnet sister, VF186-03.

Ded Moroz Collection Long before there was a Father Christmas, the preChristian Slavic and Russian people revered Ded Moroz - Grandfather Frost - the symbol of their long, unforgiving winters. Based on wizard lore, with hints of godlike abilities, Morozko forged the waters of the lakes and rivers into chains of ice, like an arctic smithy. Standing larger than life, sporting a very long white beard, Ded Moroz was not known as a holly-jolly gent. Early stories recount him as both fierce and benevolent, depending on the person he encountered. He was kind to those who were good hearted or hard working, but vicious to the lazy and the wicked. Centuries ago, he took pity on a young girl who had been cast out into the forest by her step-mother, left to die of cold and starvation. Over the generations the stories of this girl morphed her into

Morozko’s granddaughter, Snegurochka. The two could be seen in Russia riding a troika - a traditional Russian sleigh - drawn by three horses, traveling with a fir tree. Banned from the Soviet Union after the Bolshevik Revolution, along with anything godlike, demonic, or religious, Joseph Stalin later brought Ded Moroz back with some adaptations. Morozka had to ditch the red suit with white trim in favor of a frosty blue suit with white trim and geometric ornamental embroidery. Trudging through deep snow wearing traditional Russian tall felted boots called valenki, he carries a tall, crystal staff. Appearing on the secular holiday of New Years, he delivers presents to good children.

The next five pieces are a bit on the fancy side for those of you who love to make the season merry and bright. Moroz Ruby is a luscious, high quality crepe back satin. Choose either side as the right side, or showcase them both in a self-contrasting pattern. Enjoy this tightly woven fabric in a dress, jacket, skirt, or wide legged slacks. Let’s put a new twist on a great throwback fabric. Moroz Plush has a black stretch velour on a black stable double knit. Create a cardigan to wear with your new ruby crepe back satin dress for a holiday party. Do you love vintage glamour? Moroz Fancy is begging to be sewn into a classic ballgown. If your tastes are more modern, you can wear this lightweight fabric as a tunic, or use it as a lining for a long jacket to really make a statement.

Krampus Collection In Austria, the hills are alive with the sounds of demonic howling. Children who are good and kind all year need not fear this beast with his giant, twisted horns, and enormous pointed teeth sheathing a super long tongue. His name - Krampus - is a derivation of the Germanic word for claw, as his are fiercely long and sharp. Medieval Alpine tradition tells of Krampus beating naughty women and children with birch branches, or hauling them away in a sack to be tortured or eaten. As Christianity took hold, Krampus was given a new position as a foil to Saint Nicholas, following the patron saint of children around on the eve of his December 6 feast day. The saint would leave candy in the shoes of the good children, while the naughty were left birch twigs from Krampus. During Advent in the Alps, organized parades of doom and terror called Krampuslauf (Krampus Run or Krampus Parade) occur at night featuring dozens of the demonic creatures setting out to scare all, and even inflict some pain with a light thrashing of the birch twigs.

From Telio comes Krampus Maverick, a fashionable outwear fabric that is easy to sew and warm to wear. The distressed burgundy suede face is bonded to a sherpa-style fur back. You have seen this type of fabric sewn into jackets, vests and hats where the seams are left raw and facing out so the contrast of the fur acts as a visual edging design element. This fabric would not go through our die cutting machine, so we don’t have pre-cut swatches for each of you, but hand cut swatches are available upon request to those of you who request it. Take a close look at Perchta Cloqué. You’ll notice that black threads are woven quietly into the predominantly navy fabric to help give a pronounced appearance to the intricate, raised design. The word cloqué is French for blister, which describes this sort of embossed look given to a woven fabric. Telio designed this textile to be a medium weight option for both constructed and relaxed garments alike. Perchta Reversible stretch-woven satin back crepe in dark navy would look lovely as a dress to wear with a jacket of the cloqué, or as a self-contrasting jacket of crepe face with satin collar and cuffs. Lighten up your navy ensemble with a blouse or scarf sewn from Perchta Burnout. Satin and chiffon combine in a geometric design of winter white.

Perchta Collection Saf-T-Pockets #2006 “Getting to the Point Jacket”

After Krampus returns to the woods for the winter in early December, Perchta appears beginning around the winter solstice. Pagan traditions depicted Perchta as a goddess of the wild, a beautiful creature of light that dwelled in forests. Her one large foot - called a goose foot or swan foot signaled to those who met her that she had transformative powers to change into animals, and she came to be known as guardian to the beasts. The wool from these beasts went to the spinners - hardworking women whose pedal foot would become larger and splayed from the daily exertion. It was only natural for Perchta to be their patron goddess. Perchta rewarded the women who finished spinning all their wool in a years time, and punished those who did not. As Christianity spread in Perchta’s Germanic haunts, her purpose and appearance changed. She became associated with Epiphany, appearing that night in early January as a mean old hag, leaving a silver coin for the children and servants in a household who were good or who completed their tasks all year, and disemboweling those who were wicked and lazy, replacing their guts with oats and twigs.

When this arrived to our warehouse in June, we knew we had to hold it for the winter catalog. Something about its dark teal and ivory colors and ornamental print brought the holiday season to mind. The pebble crepe texture of Olentzero Motif helps makes this blouseweight fabric a wrinkle resistant option for travel attire. Choose a simple sewing pattern that requires a fabric with drape. We were thrilled when we found Olentzero Reversible because of how well it coordinated with the preceding print. The crepe side is a natural match to the print if you plan to wear these two together. On its own, this stretch woven satin back crepe in dark peacock teal is a perfect color choice for those of you who love to wear jewel tones.

Olentzero Collection No character has undergone more drastic changes than the Basque mythic creature of Olentzero. The oldest recorded stories tell of a group of hairy giants - the jentilak tribe - living in the forests of the Pyranees in Naforra. Witnessing a bright star in the sky, they worried this was a sign from the heavens. Brighter than the sun, only one jentil giant could peer at it directly - the oldest one who was nearly blind already. His jentil tribesmen held him up high at the peak of the mountain for a better look at the bright cloud. The old, hairy giant confirmed that this indeed was a sign that Jesus would soon be born. Fearing this meant the end of their way of life, he insisted on being hurled over the cliff. His brothers obliged, gaving him the heave-ho off the mountain top.

As they retreated down the slopes, they tripped and likewise plummeted to their deaths....all except Olentzero. In anger at the loss of his brethren, he would appear in villages on Christmas Eve to slit the throats of those who ate too much. Only within the past century did the story of Olentzero get toned down. According to a Basque source, he has been transformed into a hero figure, “...a humble man with a heart filled with love.” His new origin story tells of him being left in the woods at birth, then found and raised by a beautiful blond fairy. He is a strong man, a hard worker, and a charcoal maker. At Christmastime he fills his large charcoal sack with gifts he carved from wood, giving these presents to all good children.

Who gets excited by tartans? If you raised your hand, you will surely appreciate this wonderful worsted cotton flannel construction in dark emerald, royal and black. The softness of Olentzero Tartan, coupled with its classic plaid design, make it a superb fabric choice for a winter jacket, skirt or dress. To bring out the royal color of our tartan we found Olentzero Ponte. Whip up a dress from this stable double knit to wear under your new tartan jacket, or stitch a knit top to wear with a bias cut tartan skirt. We also think it’s a great choice for comfy pull-on pants, a “must-have” wardrobe item when feasting. It’s hard to find a really wonderful green fashion fabric, so rejoice with us over the addition of Olentzero Cloqué to our winter catalog. A boat neck blouse will be the perfect option for this lightweight, textured, easy-care textile.

Fouettard Collection The French celebrate several characters who accompany Saint Nicholas on December 6. One of the most famous, dare we say infamous, is a repentant inn keeper. Père Fouettard and his wife were in desperate times indeed. When three wealthy young boys on their way to study at a religious school stopped for lodgings at the couple’s inn, the husband and wife killed the boys for their money. Some stories include descriptions of the murders that include drugging the children and cooking them in a stew. Luckily Saint Nicholas, the patron saint of children, came and resurrected the boys, scolding the couple with holy force. Père Fouettard begged forgiveness and now follows Saint Nicholas around in repentance for his sin. On the saint’s feast day, Père Fouettard trails behind the beloved and benevolent saint. As jolly Saint Nick doles out candy to the good children, Père Fouettard is there behind him, dressed in dirty clothes with a poorly groomed beard, ready to whip any lazy or naughty children with a handful of twigs. Did we mention that his name comes from the French word for whipping - fouetter? His name is quite simply Father Whipper! According to a French travel site, Père Fouettard has been retired as a Christmas character because he was deemed too gruesome, but many other sources tell us his legend is alive and well in Eastern France, keeping children in check throughout the year so they get goodies in December.

Three cheers for texture! Fouettard Weave visually undulates with various thicknesses of yarns in shades of icy rose gold accented by shimmering silver threads. A mother of the bride can wear this as a fringed jacket and skirt as easily as a fashionista can wear this trendy color as a sport coat with jeans and boots. Fashion is attitude! Fouettard Plush is a lightweight nylon/viscose low pile velvet in icy rose gold that looks stunning on its own and paired with Fouettard Weave and Fouettard Sophisticate. This velvet is light enough to be worn as a blouse, or you can line it to make a dress or skirt. Up next we have a stretch woven suiting in black with icy rose gold accent. The medium weight and languid drape of Fouettard Sophisticate is perfect for any number of Loes Hinse jacket and blouse patterns, as well as the New Yorker by Sewing Workshop. Since the reverse looks very cool, we recommend you consider using it as a bias binding or contrast. Earlier in this issue we introduced you to a winter white blouseweight burnout, and now we are able to present the same fabric to you in rich black. Fouettard Burnout features a geometric pattern in satin on chiffon. Choose this lightweight, fluid fabric for a blouse or scarf.

Silhouette #550 “Cowl Neck Top”

Please note that this next fabric is very wide - 66”! The black rayon jersey base is softly printed with a color we can best describe as rose taupe. It brings a warmth to Fouettard Etching. There is a tremendous amount of cross-wise stretch to this lightweight and fluid knit, so please choose a sewing pattern that allows for more than 70% stretch for optimum construction. Is your idea of dressing up a little less than traditional? We have a very cool textured fabric for you. The subtle sheen of Fouettard Ottoman helps accentuate the wales in this stretch woven fabric. Make a long vest or jacket to wear with any of the other fabrics in this collection. Soft rayon challis is printed with stippled lines of winter white and rose taupe to create a small motif that reminds us of decorative painted borders on Italian walls. Choose Fouettard Fresco to wear as a tunic, blouse, flowing skirt or wide, pull-on Boho pants.

We move now to a sophisticated collection that gives you options for work and luncheons, with strong selections for men and women. Gryla Cloqué exquisitely provides both texture and depth of color that makes drab olive look like a rich patina. If this fabric seems familiar, we presented you with the same cloth in navy blue as VF186-23. Pair this with the following silk taffeta for an ensemble worthy of a gala event. We were thrilled when we found this silk - the color is a perfect match for to the cloqué as well as our following bouclé. Allow yourself to indulge in Gryla Taffeta and construct a divine shell or cap sleeve top to wear with a jacket and skirt of either accompanying suiting.

Gryla Collection In the fjords and glaciers of Iceland lives the ancient ogress, Gryla. Unlike countries that celebrate the holidays with Santa Claus, Gryla appears through Iceland at the end of the year. Early accounts tell of her monstrous hoofs, tail and fangs, and the all-seeing eyes in the back of her many bearded heads. She is always hungry, threatening villages that she will make her favorite snack of stewed naughty children. Often accompanied by her troll husband, Leppalúði, she treats him with abhorrence (she killed her first two husbands, but tolerates this third one). Gryla and Leppalúði had 93 troll children, known as the Yule Lads. In ancient days this family appeared at the winter solstice, descending from the mountains to wreak havoc, then returned

one by one as the days grew longer. By the 19th century, the mischievous Yule Lads had been whittled down to thirteen, appearing in the days leading up to Christmas. Named for their favorite offences, some Yule Lads are Sausage Swiper, Meat Hook, and Door Slammer. There was great pressure put upon villagers to get all the spinning and weaving done by winter, lest Gryla’s murderous giant cat, Jólakötturinn, paid them a visit. Any children and farmhands who did not receive new clothes for the winter were devoured like tiny field mice by the enormous magical feline - an incentive to spin, knit and weave faster. Gryla has faded away a little bit now, reportedly because all the spinning and weaving is done and all the Icelandic children are good natured.

This suit-weight fabric will tailor well into a smart Jackie-O inspired boxy ensemble just as easily as it can be sewn into a sport coat or sheath dress for tossing on as a go-to option when heading out to dinner. Lets now turn to two companion fabrics that are color matched perfectly. Gryla Check wool blend suiting is a handsome option for men and women. We implore you to wear the check with Gryla Charm, a rayon blend suiting that features the drab olive as a main color with undercurrents of black for visual depth.

The second of our starry sky rayon challis (see VF186-17 for the other) is Gryla Stelle. Tiny dots of drab olive, paprika, cassia bark and cream swirl around on a ground of black rayon challis, accented by dabs of glitter. Subtle shimmer sets the stage for a superb season! Brace yourselves! Cashmere alert! Yes, this handsome herringbone suiting is 90% wool and 10% cashmere. Lightweight, while remaining soft and warm, Gryla Herringbone awaits all who rejoice in sewing the finest natural fabrics. Another Lacoste cotton shirting makes its appearance here to round out this collection. Gryla Plaid is the same design as VF186-27 in navy, but here we present it to you in a warm olive interwoven with black and accented by a pale grey.

Sewing Workshop “Helix” - Top

yd

Our final collection for Winter 2018 begins with Befana Shimmer, a lightweight knit with lots of stretch both ways. The levels of shimmer are subtle and undulate in intensity in a smoky grey that has a soft patina green cast. Soft like a challis with the body of a batiste, Befana Herringbone is a combed cotton that begs to be sewn into a simple straight shirt to showcase its wonderful check design. These next two come from an Italian mill that knits for various fashion houses around the world. The medium grey tones are interrupted with floating camel colored fibers that give these two their casual appearance. Find a way to combine Befana Smooth and Befana Ribbed into one outfit, like Sewing Workshop’s Helix Top.

Befana Collection In the steep hills of Italy there comes a centuries old tale about a haggard old crone who has become a Christmas symbol more popular than Santa Claus. She is known as La Befana - The Epiphany. La Befana was known in her village as the best housekeeper, tieing a new broom each morning and sweeping until the broom wore thin at night. One day there was a knock at her door. Holding her broom, she opened the door and came face to face with the Magi. The three wise kings were trying to find the baby Jesus as heralded by the bright star in the sky. (Insert your joke here about stopping for directions. Italy is situated west of Bethlehem, and the Magi came from the east, so this folklore really takes some creative liberties!) La Befana could not help them and sent them on their way. She regretted the decision, and that evening she set out to look for them so she too could see the new baby who would be king. Never finding the Magi, she continues to roam the Italian countryside leaving gifts of candy for the good children and coal for the naughty. Over time, this character developed powers, riding her broomstick, flying down chimneys (or through keyholes in today’s apartments), leaving behind gifts in the shoes of the children. When a child leaves her a small plate of food and some wine, she sweeps for them, sweeping “away the problems of the year” according to an Italian Travel guide. Although Babbo Natale - Father Christmas - is gaining some popularity in Italy, La Befana is still the most popular gift giver in the land.

Now we arrive at our final entry from Lacoste. Befana Plaid weaves together moss, grey, khaki, navy and a hint of cream to create a wide cotton shirting you can enjoy wearing all year. Silhouettes #418 “Fischer’s Pleated Blouse”

Tailor the perfect coordinating pants for your new plaid shirt from Befana Ash, a wool that’s been blended with polyester and a hint of Lycra®. The worsted yarns and synthetic additions help keep wrinkles to a minimum, and the crossgrain stretch is like having built-in ease. Liven up the most conservative grey suit with a top sewn from Befana Wild. This rayon jersey print is an excellent choice for patterns that require lightweight knits with more than 50% crosswise stretch.

This beautiful pleated front blouse is perfect on every shape and size. The neckline is finished with an easy bias binding, the cup sizing is built into the blouse at the side seam so every shape and size has been included. The pleat is stunning and gives the body a vertical line to thin visually. The sleeve is 3/4 length and finished with a narrow band with a button. This pattern is for woven fabrics but could also be done in a knit if using a knit sleeve substitution. Recommended Fabrics: Light to medium weight wovens. Yardage requirements:
