March 20th is, brace yourselves, Alien Abduction Day, so we decided to have a bit of fun and use this as our theme for our Spring catalog. The obvious question: Is there anybody out there? Ancient cultures looked to the night skies to prognosticate. Some cultures believed stars were lights shining through holes poked into the great dome that protected the planet. Others thought the stars were spirits of their ancestors watching over them. It wasn’t until the Renaissance that greater understanding of the universe began with Galileo Galilei first recording that the moon had craters, the sun was marked with sunspots, and the band of light in the sky we now all the Milky Way is com-
prised of individual planets. Slow forward another three hundred years to 1920 when Edwin Hubble discovered that the Milky Way did not contain the entire universe, but was instead one of millions of galaxies within it. This, dear readers, would be the spark of a century of new questions. How big is the universe? How many planets are in the universe? If our planet can sustain life, are we alone in the universe or are there other planets with life? From these questions sprang forth a new genre in the arts called Science Fiction, and from this genre we get the name for our first collection: Xenology - the scientific study of extraterrestrial life.
Is it spring yet? This winter has been one for the history books, so let us begin our Spring 2019 catalog with these two amazing digital prints from Télio. Magnolias in bloom visually pop off the subtle grey background. The garment possibilities are exciting. We’d love to see what you create. Will you tailor a long jacket from Xenology Twill with sleeves of Xenology Georgette? Or maybe sew a dress from the twill with a dramatic scarf from the georgette to wear to a spring wedding or Kentucky Derby party. If you want to break the print up a bit, we recommend Xenology Mauve lightweight stretch suiting from Télio as slacks or a skirt.

Reminding you that spring is surely on its way is our next trio. Xenology Iris cotton jersey presents a beautiful color in a soft fabric. It is one of many colors that can be worn with Xenology Butterflies, a fun rayon print from Télio of tiny flying insects on branches. This would be fabulous as a t-shirt, wrap top or dress. Top your new shirt off with a cardi sewn from Xenology Heather, a midweight sweatshirt knit from Télio that feels sooooo delicious against the skin.

Everyone in our warehouse was loving this next fabric when it arrived. Add Cosmic Puffer to your wardrobe as a whimsical yet sophisticated jacket or vest. There is greater stretch along the grain, so we recommend you lay out your sewing pattern across the fabric to optimize the stretch around the body. The classic black and white adds to the drama that the textured flowers create. Wear your new jacket over a white dress sewn from Cosmic Luna ponte di Roma double knit, or toss it over a knit top made from Cosmic Nacht viscose and cotton jersey knit. Feel how soft the hand is on this black knit.

If you research the earliest UFO sightings, you may come across the Tulli Papyrus. This controversial work was said to have been from the Vatican Archive and translated by a Vatican Egyptologist, describing a ring of discs encircling the sky. But the translator is now deceased, the Vatican finds no such papyrus, and it has been classified by scientists as a hoax. According to a Wiki page, the Ancient Romans recorded some unidentified flying objects that looked like the shield of the God of War, Mars, or like silver rain, or even a star that grew and hovered and disappeared, but other sources believe these to be embellishments of hero lore, mythology and early accounts of meteors or comets. On April 14, 1561 near Neuremburg, Germany, Hundreds of people witnessed a great battle in the sky between metal spears, a giant black spear, bright lights, and something flaming that crashed to the earth. More than likely, the culprit was ergotism - a fungus in rye that causes hallucinations, severe illness and mass hysteria. One bad rye harvest and the entire village can go nuts. Other medieval to modern celestial sightings were similarly classified as hallucinations, or modern folklore. But in 1947 one sighting grabbed the attention of the US government.

Ready for some spring colors that will ease your wardrobe into summer? Our next two collections are packed with colorful options that are sure to put a smile on your face. Begin with Roswell Borealis, the first of two cotton lawns that have a slight dotted appearance not unlike a Dotted Swiss fabric. Royal, orchid and aqua stream across the cloth, creating a colorful background for the tiny flower heads that are tossed about. This fabric is ideal for a lightweight top to wear over a camisole crafted from Roswell Azure combed cotton jersey. This beautiful knit has much more body than the typical jersey, making it ideal for firmer T-shirts and tops. When you run out to the store this summer, you can wear the blue knit as a yoga skirt and toss on a top made from Roswell Plaid, a crinkled cotton gauze double woven with threads in the royal, aqua and orchid of the borealis cotton, with a hint of iris for good measure. The plaid also looks great when paired with Roswell Orchid rayon challis. This challis would make a great top to wear over a golf skirt made from the plaid, or as a flowing skirt to wear with a light top sewn from our next cotton lawn.

Roswell Collection June 24, 1947 - While flying his private plane near Mount Rainier, Kenneth Arnold “saw a string of nine, shiny unidentified flying objects” flying in a V-formation so fast, he estimated they were going about 1200-1700 mph. He described the motion of the blue objects as being like “a saucer if you skip it across water,” leading to the press coining the term “flying saucer.” He questioned if this was some new military vehicle, which piqued the interest of the US government. They denied any new such construction or testing, and refuted any claims of enemy infiltration. Later that year, rancher William “Mac” Brazel came upon a debris field of metal rods, plastic and papery scraps. He reported the alleged wreckage, and shortly was visited by soldiers who hauled away the debris. Military officials claimed this to have been a crashed weather balloon, but for this sleepy area near Roswell, New Mexico, the military involvement woke them with the idea that it perhaps was a crashed flying saucer with aliens and a governmental conspiracy. To this day, millions of people flock to Roswell as a hub of UFO enthusiasm. The only cover-up we could find was that the US claims to have been testing high-altitude balloons to detect any nuclear experiments by the Soviets in a mission they called Project Mogul.

Inquiry Kaleidoscope will add an explosion of color into your wardrobe. It would be easier to name the colors that don’t appear in this SofTouch poly blend knit that has a soft hand and great stretch. Bolder people will want to make a surplice dress, while the more conservative may venture for a T-shirt. Tame the print by pairing it with Inquiry Sky, a bright blue combed cotton jersey knit from our regular line, available in many colors.

Inquiry Collection Over the next two decades the US Government would conduct inquiries into the thousands of reported UFO sightings in a program it called Project Blue Book. This was an off-shoot of the US Air Force investigation of the Kenneth Arnold sighting, deemed necessary as more reports filtered in of other such anomalies. The feds wanted to ensure no other country was spying on us, the way we were testing high altitude balloons to spy on them.
p. 14
Over twenty years they investigated more than 12,000 reported sightings, the results of which are now held in 42 cubic feet of storage, with each cubic foot containing approximately 2,000 pages. Of the 12,618 reported sightings, 701 remain “unidentified.” If you would like to comb through these files for some light reading, there are 94 rolls of microfilm available in the National Archives Microfilm Reading Room.

Genre Collection
Kwik-Sew #4176 Poncho Top
Science fiction as a genre, according to many in the literary community, dates back to 1818 with Mary Shelly’s Frankenstein. Then, in June of 1835, Edgar Allan Poe published the short story “The Unparalleled Adventure of One Hans Pfaall” in which Pfaall travels to the moon in a giant balloon - the first work of space fiction. This was followed a few months later by the New York Sun publishing six articles detailing life on the moon in what has been called the “Great Moon Hoax.” In 1898 the great author, H. G. Wells, published The War of the Worlds, an implausible tale of space travel, military tanks, airplanes, and something resembling the world wide web - none of which existed at that time. Wells and Jules Verne both influenced Georges Mélieès to create a short, silent film in 1902 called Le Voyage dans la Lune - A Trip to the Moon. Check it out on Youtube. The Flash Gordon comic strips by Alex Raymond in the 1930s brought space travel to readers in daily newspapers, and Star Trek in 1966 kicked off our nation’s real love affair with space exploration. But the success of George Lucas’ Star Wars in 1977 started a space opera boom that remains strong on the big screen.

Not forgetting about those of you with more mellow tastes, we offer up two collections with subtle colorations and more sophisticated palettes. Genre Navy is a Liverpool Crepe Knit that can be dressed up and down. Sew a sheath dress from the knit, and accent it with a long, dramatic scarf created from from our following spectacular georgette prints.
Loes HInse #5207 Casablanca Blouse
Genre Primo, a navy with latte and mocha print georgette, features three different designs in its 24” repeat. The print runs one-way so use your nap layout and buy enough to match the design at your seams - don’t worry, we’ve priced this really well for you. Picking up on the neutral tones in this collection we offer Genre Latte rayon jersey. This soft knit has ample stretch both ways and comes in a wide range of colors. It leads us into our next print, Genre Secundo, the same georgette as the navy, but now featured in plum with mocha and sporting a hint of muted persimmon.

Blockbuster Collection In 2015, Fortune ranked the top 10 grossing sci-fi movies of all time, adjusted for inflation. Six of the ten belong to the Star Wars franchise, the six films they had released at that time, with the original bringing in $461 million at the box office in 1977. The remaining four were Independence Day, Back to the Future, Avatar and ET: The Extra Terrestrial. Back to the Future was the only non-space fiction film on that list. The Star Wars franchise, according to the article, had a box office take of nearly $4.9 billion when all figures were adjusted for inflation to the time the article was published in 2015. George Lucas had trouble finding a studio to produce
the original film. He was turned down by United Artists, Universal and even Disney before 20th Century Fox took him on and spent $11 million on the gamble. Thirty-five years later, Disney bought the rights to the franchise for over $4 billion, planning not only the release of the next trilogy in Lucas’ concept, but other vignettes like RogueOne and Solo, along with a theme park in Orlando within DisneyWorld. Yes, coming in fall 2019, you’ll be able to visit the galaxies far, far away in Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge. Hmmm, we sense a theme for next year’s catalog....are there requisition forms for amusement park visits....for research?

For those of you who sew for special occasion clients and Ren-Faires or Dickens’ Faires, this collection will speak to your soul. Begin with Blockbuster Peridot and Blockbuster Plaid, two 55” wide silk taffetas that came from a New York designer. The solid shot silk features cross-woven pale aqua and soft gold threads. The tiny plaid is perfect for bias binding and contrasts on a dress, jacket or day dress. Remnants can easily be used in doll clothes for a miniature replica of your garment. We had to offer Blockbuster Olive even though it isn’t silk, because the color was too perfect and the 57” width will work for most bias cut tops and dresses.

Frontier Collection In the 1960s, Star Trek reminded us weekly that space is “the final frontier” for human exploration. Beginning with the space race between the Soviets hurling cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin into outer space orbit in 1961 and the USA landing men on the moon in 1969 with the Apollo 11 mission. Since then Russia, China, and the USA have landed equipment on the surface of the moon, and Israel launched a spacecraft on the back of a SpaceX rocket from Cape Canaveral in Florida in February this year with a planned April lunar landing. Items the US has launched through NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration) include rovers for surface
exploration, orbiters and landers for capturing information about the surface of a planet, and probes that flyby planets to beam back information as they glide through the solar system. If you visit NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory’s website, https://www.jpl.nasa.gov, you can see an entire list of their past, present, future and proposed missions for space exploration. No, Captain James T. Kirk and the starship Enterprise are not featured. NASA has a lot of space to cover. There are around 30 billion planets in our galaxy, and over 100 billion galaxies in the observable universe. The question remains, and looms large, are we alone?

That same jacket will look fabulous over a boat neck top sewn from Frontier Nautical, a chambray cotton with boats printed on the face. This comes from Robert Kaufman’s fashion line, and Kaufman is a top name in cotton manufacturing. Frontier Pincord is a poly-cotton blend shirting in a traditional tiny corded weave, so it has a little texture and some body, while still being a lightweight fabric. Sew a smart button down pincord shirt to wear over a jewel neck top made from Frontier Dots, a wonderful red cotton voile made in the Swiss Dot style. Lastly we bring you Frontier Oxford, a pale indigo yarn dyed cotton shirting from Robert Kaufman’s fashion line. These last four shirtings can become perennial favorites in your spring and summer wardrobes. Enjoy!
