Shaken, not stirred.

Shake up your summer wardrobe with our amazing selection of athletic knits, linens, cotton novelties & wash-and-wear travel options.

Summertime is when we want simple, casual clothing that we can toss on and feel comfortable while looking good. Our catalog has plenty to offer, and most are wonderful natural fibers. Start with Monaco Stripes, a textured knit with soft, flat backside that will go against your skin and a raised stripe design in white, black and indigo. This stable knit is perfect for a body-con dress, stylish tank, or contemporary top. Monaco Indigo feels like a lightweight onionskin knit, but with greater opacity and a heap of softness. We can’t wait to ruche some of this up into a cool, loose top to wear to an outdoor music festival.

Monaco Collection

What’s smaller than Central Park, is the most densely populated country in the world per capita, is surrounded by another country on three sides with a seashore on the fourth, and is one of the world’s most famous playgrounds for the rich and famous? If you said Monaco, you are correct! In honor of the Monaco Grand Prix on May 26, we dedicate the theme for our Summer catalog to this very impressive little country. Located on the southern edge of France, between Nice and the Italian border, on the shore of the Mediterranean, this principality is quite an enigma. Less than two miles wide and just over half a mile from north to southfg 99, it has such a small landmass it hosts the only marathon in the world that serpentines through three countries - Monaco, France and Italy.

Of the 38,000 people who live in Monaco, most are considered residents, not citizens, with only 7,000 being considered Monegasques (born in Monaco, or have renounced citizenship elsewhere after a decade of living in Monaco in order to be granted naturalization through sovereign ordinance). Most residents are millionaires enjoying Monaco’s tax-haven status, so they don’t need a local job, leaving unemployment at less than 2% and poverty practically nonexistent. The weather is beautifully mild and pleasantly sunny. Although not part of the European Union, Monaco uses the Euro as currency and is a Schengen Area country, sharing open borders with France (if you want a Monegasque stamp for your passport you have to go to the visitor’s center).

Feel the hand of Monaco Abstract. It’s so soft and light, it just begs to be sewn into a top for a summer evening spent with friends. Sewing Workshop “MixIt Top”

Tie all of these fabrics together with Monaco Blanc, a wide and sturdy linen in summer white. Tailor a man’s suit, or embroider a skirt and shorts and jacket that you can wear as separates with any number of summer garments. You can dry clean it to retain its crispness, or wash it to soften it. It dries quickly in a low heat dryer and requires little ironing.

Dana Marie #1059 “Retr0” $1700 A flattering, slightly swing design with an oval neckline and faced pockets that mirror the shape. Unique hemline in three lengths (top, short dress, long dress) can be made with cap, short, 3/4 or long sleeves. Fast and easy to sew. Neckline is finished with bias binding or bias facing strip. Perfect for stretch fabrics, but equally delightful in soft woven fabrics with drape. Recommended Fabrics: Light to medium weight fabrics with drape, such as jersey knits, ITY knits, challis, silkies. Bust = 28”- 62”

Waist = 21” - 54”

Hip = 30” - 64”

There are so many options for this pattern, we don’t have room to print all the yardage options. They are available on our site, and by contacting Customer Service. Here is some guidance: If you can cut the front and back of the pattern out side-by-side on your fabric, buy one length of fabric for the body of the garment, and get enough extra for the length of sleeve you want. If you can’t cut the front and back out side-by-side on the fabric, buy two lengths of fabric and enough extra for the sleeves you want.

Grimaldi Collection

Kwik-Sew #3765 “Straight Skirts”

Long after darkness fell on January 8, 1297, two Franciscan monks approached the castle of Monaco. As they entered through the gates, they pulled from beneath their humble robes a couple of long swords, and struck down the guards. Letting in the group of fighters waiting in the shadows outside, the men stormed the castle and gained control. These were no monks. They were Francesco Grimaldi, a member of the ruling family of nearby Genoa, Italy, and his cousin, Rainier I, Lord of Cagne. Francesco, known as Il Malizia (“The Malicious One”), claimed this small colony for the Genoese, and the Grimaldi family has ruled Monaco ever since, with a couple of minor interruptions here and there. The heraldic coat of arms for Monaco features two monks, representing the two Grimaldi cousins, with their long swords drawn in triumph. Did we mention that monaco is the Italian word for monk? This quite possibly was the first storming of a castle by pun, or the inspiration for a Monty Python sketch. But, we digress... Francesco ruled over Monaco until his death in 1310. Without an heir, Monaco was left to his conquering cousin, Rainier I. The Grimaldi family purchased the land around Monaco from the crown of Aragon in 1419, becoming completely independent, but maintaining close relations with France and Genoa. When Genoa became united under the flag of Italy, the Italians relinquished any claims on Monaco, which enjoys military protection from neighboring France. The Grimaldi family continue to rule the principality of Monaco today.

If you prefer a more substantial knit, we have two fun athleticwear jersey options in this collection. First, Grimaldi Blue Mosaic combines the look of a turquoise and lapis inlay with accents of black borders and tiny white printed pearls. The lapis is a perfect color match to Grimaldi Ocean linen suiting. Sew a knit top with linen shorts or skirt. Embroider the linen for extra flair.

Dana Marie #1051 “Modern Empire”

The second knit print is Grimaldi Coral Mosaic, featuring pink and coral with black and white accents. Modal, a type of rayon, is 50% more absorbent than cotton, breathable and super soft, making it ideal for active wear, while the spandex that’s added will help in recovery to keep garments from sagging at knees and elbows. We love how the mosaic comes to life next to Grimaldi Fuchsia, a stable T-shirt knit with a lot of cross-wise stretch. Go beyond the shirt and whip up drawcord pants, a light sweater, or a simple knit skirt.

Here we show Grimaldi Moderne polyester habotai print as a cool tunic paired with yoga pants made from the preceding fuchsia knit. Rocher Collection Jutting into the Mediterranean, standing over 200 feet above the waves, is a monolith called le Rocher, “the Rock.” Sheer cliffs form the border to the sea, with a narrow passage extending to land. The ancients declared that Hercules passed through this place and drove out all the previous gods. A temple was erected to him, the House of Hercules, leading to its original Greek name of Monoikos, meaning single house. The name changed to Monaco later, under control of the Holy Roman Empire, but before the Grimaldi family took control dressed as monks. Le Rocher is home to the old quarter of Monaco, Monaco-Ville, The natural fortress-like conditions of the surrounding cliffs embrace Renaissance villas that line narrow cobblestone streets open exclusively to pedestrian traffic. Governmental buildings from the town-hall to parlia-

ment are located here, as well as the Palace of Justice, a neoFlorentine style courthouse built from stones harvested from the sea, so mollusks are visible in the facade. The expansive Oceanographic Museum, home to the Mediterranean Science Commission, is built into the cliff ’s edge facing the Mediterranean and is packed full of incredible specimens from the sea. The famous underwater explorer and conservationist, Jacques Cousteau, was director of the museum for over thirty years. No trip to Monaco is complete without a tour of the Prince’s Palace, but equally popular with tourists is the Cathedral, build in the mid 19th century around an existing parish church, with the retable to St. Nicholas perfectly preserved inside. Monegasque royalty are buried within.

Folkwear #210 “Armistice Blouse”

Dana Marie #1024 “Safari” - shorts

Every summer wardrobe needs some khaki, right? Rocher au Lait is another rayon/linen blend ideal for sewing essential apparel. Shirts, slacks, jackets, skirts, dresses, shorts and more can be constructed, and embroidered, with this exceptional cloth. Rocher Persimmon is a magnificent linen that weaves together dark coral and light peach threads, giving it a soft appearance. A loose fitting tank dress will keep you cool during the hottest days. If you need to protect your arms, sew a light shirt or poncho top from Rocher Sunrise, a semi-sheer cotton voile. If you dry clean this, it will remain crisp, but if you wash it in warm water and toss it in the dryer it shrinks a little, tightens the weave a bit and gets a much softer hand. For those of you who costume, the washed voile is ideal for a Regency dress overlay and sleeves, while the linen is perfect for your Spencer.

Loes Hinse #1003 “Cap Sleeve Dress”

Rainier Collection The Monaco we know today as the bustling, luxurious, economically healthy country is the result of progressive reforms made by Prince Rainier III in the 20th century. He ascended to the throne in 1949 after the death of his grandfather, Prince Louis II. His mother, Princess Charlotte, was the illegitimate daughter of Prince Louis II and a cabaret singer. Though she was legitimized through adoption by Louis II when she was 20 to satisfy the laws of succession, she renounced her claim to the throne upon Rainier’s 21st birthday, avoiding any accusations of impropriety. Prior to World War II, 95% of the Monegasque economy was driven by gambling. After the war, Rainier inherited a broke economy and set to work instituting reforms to improve conditions. He made Monaco a tax haven for businesses and wealthy individuals, while controlling efforts to deter money laundering through their very private banking system. Now, over thirty percent of current residents are millionaires. Prince Rainier came into the international spotlight for his social life, not his reforms. In 1955 he met American actress Grace Kelly at the Cannes Film Festival, and one year later they married. She retired from acting at age 26 to concentrate on her philanthropic role as Princess Grace, while raising three children with her handsome prince. After Princess Grace died in 1982 from a brain hemorrhage that caused her fatal car crash, Prince Rainier chose not to remarry. He is buried beside her in the Cathedral on La Rocher.

The retail price is nearly half that of the digital linen prints we are getting from Canada. The pink sandwashed twill pairs beautifully with our next print, Albert Blooms, a semi-sheer cotton voile with faint pink flowers accented in purple, persimmon and dark teal. A subtle addition to the weave gives the appearance of a Swiss dot. We picked out some wonderful buttons that tie all the colors together for you - view them on page 18. Our next fabric, Albert Teal, picks up on the dark teal in the print. This lighter weight cotton suiting has a languid drape, and will be the perfect option for a camp shirt and walking shorts to wear with the voile print.

Albert Collection Prince Rainier and Princess Grace bore two daughters and a son, who were adored by the tabloids for some of their outrageous behavior. The middle child, Albert, was the heir apparent under the governing laws of primogeniture. He spent six summers in New Hampshire as a camper and counselor at a summer camp. He attended Amherst College in Massachusetts as Albert Grimaldi in the 1970s. Earning a reputation as a bit of a playboy when he had children out of wedlock with two different women, he caused a bit of a panic for Prince Rainier. If Albert succeeded Rainier and then died without legitimate issue, Monaco would fall to the French. In 2002 an amendment was made to the succession laws allowing the Principality to pass to Albert’s sisters and their children, should Albert fail to produce a legitimate heir. Fear not! Prince Albert married in 2011. It’s quite a love story. Prince Albert, a five time Olympian in bobsled, is a member of the International Olympic Committee and President of the Monegasque Olympic Committee. Around 2006 he began dating Charlene Whittstock, an Olympic swimmer for South Africa. They were seen attending many high profile events together, from Olympics to Grands Prix to royal weddings, finally tieing the knot themselves. On 10 December 2014 the 56 year old prince and 36 year old princess gave birth to twins, Princess Gabriella and Prince Jacques, heir to the throne. Today, Albert is one of the wealthiest royals in the world, with investments worth over $1 billion, mostly in real estate and in shares of the institution that controls Monaco’s casinos, banks and luxury hotels.

Our last trio of cottons bring to you cool aqua and summer white. Albert Blanc comes to us from Robert Kaufman’s Soft Touch Double Gauze collection. Two layers of white cotton gauze have been stitched together to give you a lightweight, breathable option for loose tops and tunics. You can top off your new gauze shirt with an over shirt of Albert Check, a 3/4” gingham check of aqua and white. The aqua is actually printed onto the fabric, and does not follow the grain rigidly, giving it a relaxed appearance. This color combination continues in Albert Aqua, a cross-woven cotton Oxford cloth that can be sewn into a man’s shirt, shorts, skirts and overshirts. p. 17

Great Copy #2420 “Bristol Jacket”

Monte Carlo Collection The words Monte Carlo bring to mind James Bond, extreme luxury and gambling. These are the legacy of a great entrepreneur. A century and a half ago, Monaco legalized gambling in the hopes of attracting new revenue, like the success seen in Germany. Meanwhile, the architect of the most successful gambling and spa resorts in Germany was looking for a warmer climate for his concept, one that would attract people all year long. Francois Blanc went to Monaco and built casinos and bathing spas with the support of the Prince and Princess. But, without good roads, no tourists came. With royal support, he invested in the railways, and insisted the tracks come through Monaco as a line to Italy. It worked - people came in droves! More casinos popped up, and the gaming industry saved the tiny Principality from economic ruin. Over 95% of Monaco’s income was from gambling until Prince Rainier diversified her economic structure after World War II. Monte Carlo isn’t like Las Vegas. Strict codes govern who can enter the casinos and how they should be dressed. No one under the age of 18 is allowed in the casinos - no exceptions. Men must wear a jacket and tie, while women wear business casual to evening gowns. Anyone in blue jeans, T-shirts and shorts are turned away. Oh, and you have to show your passport at the entrance because residents of Monaco are NOT allowed. That’s right. The rich and famous can live there but not gamble there, or they can gamble there but not live there. Pick your poison. Monaco wants to get rich off the wealth of others, not off its own citizens, nor does it want to be a home to degenerates, just a temporary playground to the super rich. The iconic Monte Carlo Casino offers tourist visiting hours from 10 am - 1 pm, before it opens for gaming at 2pm with last entry just after midnight. Nope, not Vegas.

Dana Marie #1049 “A Little Something Xtra” - top

If you have ever received an email from Bea in Customer Service you will remember the little bumble bees in her signature. She is our Queen Bea, and she has given her full seal of approval on this yellow, black and white collection. Let’s begin with Monte Carlo Quilt, a pale ivory quilted polyester and Lycra® knit. We just saw this worn as a boat neck top, and it looked great. It would also make a cute cardie to be worn over a top of Monte Carlo Discs. When this cotton print came to our warehouse, we had to snatch it up for the catalog. Can’t you see it as a tunic to be worn with walking shorts or Capris pants made from Monte Carlo Noir, a lightweight stretch rayon/linen blend. The subtle stretch provides built-in ease. Brightening things up is Monte Carlo Linen in bold yellow. On its own, or color blocked with the black stretch linen blend, create funky and fun tops and summer jackets. Or maybe you will be a purist and wear yellow shorts with a buttoned down shirt sewn from Monte Carlo Plaid, a cotton lawn cross-woven with black, white, yellow and a hint of beige. Keep warm on cool nights with a cardigan constructed from Monte Carlo Knit. The rib side is the face, but it can be sewn reversibly. p. 24

Circuit Crepe is a teal gem that comes from our Bubble Crepe Georgette collection. Opaque enough for unlined tops, it is totally easy-care and easy-wear. Enjoy the subtle stretch and texture in a breezy summer top. We chose it to bring out the teal in Circuit Scrolls crinkled rayon challis. Romantic drape and subdued coloring make this an excellent choice for loose garments. You can even use our drawcord elastic and make some billowing pants to wear on hot evenings.

Brighten this trio with Circuit Linen, loosely cross-woven with ivory and buff threads. There was no discernible shrinkage when we washed this in cold water and tossed it in the dryer on low heat for 20 minutes. It needed a little bit of an iron with the steam setting. Nothing will keep it as crisp as if you dry clean it and have them press it on the machine, but for casual wash-and-wear this worked out really well for a linen.

Circuit Collection The biggest special event on Monaco’s calendar is Le Grand Prix de Monaco. The grande dame of motorsport races, this Formula 1 race is the oldest and most prestigious of all the circuits, winding through the historic narrow streets. It’s considered a jewel in the triple crown of motorsport along with the Indianapolis 500 and the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Drivers break from the starting grid, climb forty meters before looping around the Place du Casinos at high speeds only to screech to a crawl entering the famous Fairmont hairpin turn, plunge into the dark tunnel, reemerge into the blinding sunlight, then zoom past the Yacht Club and Marina, hug the curve around the famous Rascasse club to come back to the starting line. They repeat this 77 more times around the roughly two mile circuit, averaging a minute and twenty seconds per lap. Since its first motorcar race in 1929, only two drivers have flown off-road into the Mediterranean. It takes six weeks to set up all the protective barriers and spectator seating areas before the week of festivities which include three practice sessions, the qualifying round to set the starting grid positions and the race itself. Occurring at the tail end of the Cannes Film Festival a mere 41 nautical miles down the shore, the rich and famous hop a yacht from Cannes, pull into Monaco’s harbor, and watch the race from their moorings. Some even stay for special music and party events that week. Yacht horns blare in celebration when the checkered flag flies. Prince Albert and Princess Charlene congratulate the drivers, giving trophies to the top three drivers. Festivities officially over, tear down takes three weeks, like a lingering hang over after the best party ever.

Take a deeper look at Circuit Houndstooth. At first you might assume it is a wool, but no! That’s a remarkable linen woven with buff, beige and midnight navy threads. See the twist in the threads? The worsted threads help minimize wrinkles, and it washed up beautifully for us with little ironing or steaming required.

Haven Collection

Kwik-Sew #4176 “Poncho and Tank Top”

Prince Rainier III was educated in some of the best schools in Britain, Switzerland and France, moving in prominent circles. So when he inherited a broke post-war economy, he instituted laws that would attract wealthy people and innovative businesses, turning Monaco into a tax haven. There is no personal income tax or corporate income tax, no capital gains tax, no tax on corporate dividends, no wealth tax, no property tax (except a 1% tax on rentals). There is a 33% tax on profits from property sales, which can be off-set by real estate losses over a five-year period. The catch? A resident needs to live in Monaco six months and one day per year minimum to qualify, and French citizens are generally not able to avoid French taxation in Monaco. Employers do pay high social insurance contributions, about 35% of gross salary including benefits, to cover things like health insurance and social services. Employees also contribute to this, but only around 10%. There were accusations of Monaco banks laundering money, but Princes Rainier and Albert worked hard to get the allegations dropped and their financial institutions reinstated in good standing. With 33% of residents being millionaires, and more coming to play throughout the year, wealth pours into the economy through fine dining, amazing shopping, and patronage to theater, the arts and sporting events. During our research we found some apartment rentals listed for $5000 per night. Totally worth it for an infinity pool overlooking the sea, right? Dana Marie #1025 “Sahara” - skirt

Continuing with our neutrals, these can be livened up with any number of bold colors from your wardrobe. Haven Sateen has a subtle and elegant sheen on the face of this strong beige cotton. The added stretch is a bonus, providing built-in ease. And the color flawlessly enhances the neutral in Haven Zigzag, a shimmering, loose knit featuring black, beige and hints of gold. There is greater stretch lengthwise down the fabric, so we recommend you cut your pattern out cross-grain with the zigzags running horizontally around your body. But, there is still a good 20% cross-wise stretch, so if you want the design to run vertically you have that option. We have provided you with Haven Nuit (that’s French for night), a very lightweight rayon knit, to be worn under the zigzag. You can make a tank out of it or use it as an underlining without adding bulk. The same pairing idea goes for our next two entries. Haven Ivoire combed cotton jersey knit can be sewn into a yoga skirt or pants as well as made into a tank to wear under Haven Vapor, a lighter beige version of VF193-40. These two novelty sweater knits washed up beautifully. In this image we suggest sewing the entire dress from the jersey, and incorporating the sweater knit as an overlay. The jersey provides stability to the bodice and the sweater knit lends texture to the garment.

Now we add in a bit of brown for good measure, starting with Haven Moderne, the darker version of VF193-11. You can sew this into a shell and also use it as a lining for a jacket, in the classic Chanel styling. That jacket should be tailored from Haven Espresso dark brown stretch rayon/linen blend. Cool, comfortable, breathable, washable. We also recommend sewing this into loose pull-on pants, pleated walking shorts, a button-down shirt, an A-line dress....and the options for embroidery and embellishment are endless! Check out the amazing color match we found in some fun, summery buttons for you. Our final entry in this collection is a showstopper. White bamboo shoots are printed on an espresso brown background, then crinkled to enhance the look of the print. Haven Stalks begs to be sewn into a loose fitting top or overshirt, a fuller skirt, or an A-line dress. Make sure to order some buttons from page 18 to match these fabrics - both the brown and the white flower buttons are perfect choices.

Have fun with Reclamation Reversible, a double woven cotton gauze dobby from Robert Kaufman. There are numerous patterns from Sewing Workshop, Cutting Line Designs and Diane Ericson that would work well for showcasing both sides of this lightweight yet opaque cloth as a loose top. Kaufman used an indigo dye on this fabric, so the first few washings may have some bleeding, crocking or fading - but we washed it with the other fabrics from this catalog and saw no ill effects at all. Create a base garment from Reclamation Noir, a rich black linen suiting from Telio. Once you have your shell or sheath dress sewn from the black linen, protect your arms from the chill of air conditioning with a lightweight sweater crafted from Reclamation Ripples summer knit. Feel the softness of this black and dove grey beauty. You will surely also want to whip up a quick cap sleeve top that you can toss on when running out the door - simple and beautiful.

Reclamation Collection

Dana Marie #1053 “All the Right Angles”

What do you do when you run a small, wealthy country filled to capacity and can’t expand your land borders? Build into the sea, of course! Over the past century, Monaco has expanded into the Mediterranean a little bit at a time through the process of reclamation, or land fill. Prince Rainier first built out a beach district in the 1960s to attract families on holiday vacations. Then he built out the Fontvieille industrial park to attract more businesses and corporations, add highrise apartment buildings, and bring a stadium to Monaco for sporting events. This land fill increased Monaco’s land mass by 20%. Extensions have been made to Port Hercules to accommodate larger cruise ships and more yachts. Prince Albert would like to continue expansion into the sea, but as a conservationist he has to balance expansion with his care for the environment. Work is underway to add 15 acres of land through reclamation. It will be home to a marina with landscaped promenade, 1000 new trees, and 1000 new luxury apartments estimated to sell for over $75,000 per square meter. Over 40% of the energy for this expansion will be harnessed from the sun and the sea, setting high standards for environmentally conscious new growth. Even with the expansion over the last sixty years, Monaco is still smaller in square footage than New York’s Central Park.

We know how much you love stretch suiting, so we end the catalog with three stylish options. Reclamation Florets features small white motifs floating against black. Jump ahead to Reclamation Streaks with its white lines dashing against the rich black. Both of these were milled for ready-to-wear manufacturers, so there is no stretch across the grain and 30% stretch along the grain. In order to have the benefit of the stretch wrapping around your body, lay your pattern out across the grain. To compliment these two we found Reclamation Sateen, a white stretch cotton with a subtle sheen on the face and 15% cross-grain stretch. A white summer dress, or shell with slacks, is ideal for bouncing the sun’s rays off your body to help you stay cool. Toss on a jacket tailored from either of the accompanying prints to complete your ensemble when you need to dress up a little for work or a special occasion.
