Transition 2019
Blowin’ in the Wind
Breeze through our catalog of tempting textiles and study the swatches of cotton lawns, novelty knits, stylish suitings while enjoying our timely theme: Woodstock’s 50th Anniversary.
Bethel, NY
Welcome to Transition. In the warmer cities, you still want light fabrics for the August and September heat, while cooler climates are looking forward to cooler breezes that will soon arrive.
Woodstock Collection When a couple of men wanted to open a music studio in Woodstock, New York, they couldn’t foresee their plans for raising money would result in a historically monumental, but financially disastrous, event that defined a generation. For even in a time filled with war abroad, a fight for civil rights at home, and a space race with America’s Cold War adversary, record amounts of people were able to assemble quickly and celebrate peacefully for three days of music. The magnitude of the event was so spectacular that even if you don’t know what it was, you still probably recognize the name, Woodstock. Some of the world’s most famous talents performed, including Jimi Hendrix, the Grateful Dead, Joan Baez, Jefferson Airplane, The Who, CCR, Crosby Stills Nash & Young, Sly and the Family Stone, Arlo Guthrie and many more. Messages about society and peace were shared for everyone to enjoy. People came together at a time when the nation was fractured. In the past 50 years there have been countless music festivals, but none equalled the enormity of Woodstock, and this 3 day event is receiving an anniversary encore this year. Today’s youth continue to enjoy full playlists of all the original performances streaming on most platforms. For even with all the craziness that happens today, people still rely on music as a release to their own little world. To this day, Woodstock remains one of the most loved American events of the post World War II era, and its legacy will continue to be carried on for many years to come. Join us as we look back fifty years to the global happenings that brought about the hippie culture and a summer of love.

Communist China and the USSR aided rebels with ousting the French to overtake North Vietnam in 1950, which President Eisenhower warned could have a domino effect throughout Asia, potentially causing other democratic countries fall. In the early 1960s, the Vietnamese government changed hands a dozen times over a two year period, creating widespread instability in the region. US involvement gained congressional approval following an alleged attack on the USS Maddox in the Gulf of Tonkin in 1964, further entrenching the US in a fight for democracy’s survival on the far side of the earth. The post World War ll climate in the USA, engulfed by fear of the rise of Communism, bled into the youth of America who had reached their tipping point. They were disgusted by the drafting of men to fight in a war they didn’t believe in, and were angry at the government for not taking more peaceful, diplomatic actions. This developing, youthful counter culture did not want another war at all, especially when many couldn’t point Vietnam out on a map, so they took matters into their own hands. The post-beatnik hipsters, inspired by the protests of the Civil Rights Movement, organized anti-war marches, protests, sit-ins and student strikes. They preached peace and love and called for an end to the war and the draft. A combination of bold clothes, loud music, drug use, and sex made the “hippies” an identifiable group, garnering much skepticism from older, more traditional Americans. Love them or hate them, they were a huge influence in the Vietnam era, and created a lifestyle that people still live by.

Freedom Collection America is known as the land of the free, but for hundreds of years, this wasn’t true. The Civil Rights Movement of the 1950s and 1960s was, and continues to be, a monumental part of the American story. The Civil War in the 1860s pitted North against South in a battle of slavery versus freedom, and President Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation called for all slaves to be freed. But Jim Crow segregation laws in the south prevented freed slaves, their descendants, and all people of color, from finding equality with the majority white Christian ruling class. By the mid 20th century, Freedom Marches and protests were occurring all over the country, calling for an end to atrocities, such as lynchings of black men and the segregation laws. Many Freedom Fighters chose the route of peaceful protests and marches, the largest of which were led by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., an Atlanta born preacher who fought for equality and acceptance. He is recognized today as one of the most important people in America’s history as he fought against discrimination, and fought for equal opportunity and treatment in the United States. His famous “I have a Dream” speech from 1963 began by stating that, though emancipated, “...the Negro is still not free….crippled by the manacles of segregation and the chains of discrimination.” The speech declared his dream “...that one day this nation will rise up, live out the true meaning of its creed: ‘We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal.’” The hippie movement was one realization of this dream, where people judged each other on the content of the character, not the color of their skin nor the clothes on their back, nor the length of their hair. They just wanted to live life, and love each other.

Space Collection “Space, the final frontier” may have been the words of the fictional Captain Kirk, but the fervor to be the first country to explore the unknown bolstered the world’s two most powerful countries into race for technological dominance in space exploration. The United States and the Soviet Union locked in a battle to become the first country to venture into space, orbit the earth, and land on the moon. There was a deeper fight behind this space race. After the USSR sent an unmanned satellite called Sputnik into orbit in 1957, Americans feared the Communists would be able to eventually launch missiles from space. Then, in 1961, the USSR became the first country to send a man into orbit, when Yuri Gagarin circled the earth on April 12, further intensifying fears of an imminent attack. A month later, President Kennedy announced to a joint session of Congress that America would send a man to the moon before the end of the decade. On July 20th of 1969, Apollo 11 landed on the moon, giving the USA bragging rights and a national boost of pride. Astronauts Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin had the honor of being the first humans to ever walk on the moon. The other astronaut involved, Michael Collins, stayed in orbit around the moon, waiting anxiously for his partners to return. The product of this competitive engagement actually proved to be extremely beneficial. The United States and USSR rendezvoused in space in 1975, and the USA continued to work with Russia after hercommunist regime fell. Technological advances stemming from the urge to explore space included planetary probes and rovers, constantly improving weather satellites, the International Space Station, and telecommunications satellites. These advances have changed the entire way we are able to live from improved storm predictions and streaming entertainment on mobile devices, to searching for the origins of the universe and improving human chances at living in space. What started off as a race for spaceflight dominance ended in one of the biggest increases in technology and research of all time.

This is a perfect color choice for sewing the new Linda Tunic from Angela Wolf! Wear your new top over a yoga skirt from Silhouettes Patterns in Space Aqua. Sew up a bevy of shorts, tops, and a summer jacket that will protect you from harsh sun and frigid air conditioning. Our next three fabrics beg to be sewn into a fun outfit. Space Juice stretch cotton shirting reminds us of fruit punch. Look at how perfectly it brings out that same color in Space Bouquet, a crinkled rayon blouse-weight print. Its myriad colors include shades of the fruit punch, mango, lemon, lime, coral and jade. Soft, lightweight and breathable, you will appreciate having this vibrant print in your wardrobe every summer. Space Sunshine will brighten your day as well with its vivid yellow cotton and silk splendor. The last trio in our Space Collection begins with Space Wildflowers rayon challis print. Muted shades of persimmon, lemon, mango, ice blue and green are presented as tiny flower heads tossed on a bed of dark teal. Enjoy the sublime softness of the hand on this fabric when you wear it as a blouse or flowing skirt. If you need a great bottom weight neutral for pants, a jacket, or a skirt, look no further than Space Oatmeal stretch cotton twill. You can use either side as the face, or engineer a pattern to showcase this reversibly. We think it’s clever how the golden neutral tone brings out the glint of gold metallic thread running through Space Shimmer. This dark teal version of VF191-31 is sure to be just as popular as that black crinkled cotton gauze has been. The loose weave allows plenty of air to flow through when you can catch a breeze on a hot summer day.
Culture Collection Art imitates life, and we would be remiss to omit the total cultural revolution inspired by the hippie movement. The music that defined the hippie generation was a politically driven folk-rock. It embraced their wild, unabashed side, while speaking to their collective thoughts on freedom, love, self-expression and anti-war sentiments. Bob Dylan’s Blowin’ in the Wind asked “...how many times must the cannon balls fly/ Before they’re forever banned?...how many years can some people exist/ Before they’re allowed to be free? ....how many times can a man turn his head/ And pretend that he just doesn’t see?” Dylan submits that “There is nothing so stable as change.” There was also a rise in Psychedelic Rock which mirrored the rapid increase in hallucinogenic drugs among America’s youthful counter culture, reflecting their desire for a peaceful and fun environment, far away from a formal business oriented society. Movies like The Graduate challenged social norms. To Kill a Mockingbird was written in 1960 by Harper Lee and released as a feature film staring Gregory Peck in 1962, fueled the Civil Rights cry for humanity, compassion, awareness to the injustice of southern norms by shedding a light on racism and stereotyping. Broadway brought the hippie movement center stage, as it were, with the musical Hair, enacting what life was like for this youth movement on all fronts. Four songs from the cast album reached top-five status on Billboard Music’s Top 40 list, including Let the Sun Shine In, a declaration of freedom against the establishment.

Coral, salmon, shrimp - these are all wonderful secondary colors for summer and Living Coral is also Pantone’s color of the year, so of course we put together a vibrant collection for you! Begin with Culture Checks in coral and black with a subtle shimmering metallic thread. Please note, this stretch woven blouse weight fabric has the stretch running along the grain, so we recommend cutting your patterns across the grain to get the full benefit of that stretch when you wear this fabric. To measure how many yards you will need, simply take out your pattern pieces, lay them side by side and measure across. Easy. In the winter you may prefer to wear a blouse of the checks with black slacks or a black skirt, but we urge you to go bold with Culture Radiant, a bright and supple ponte di Roma double knit that has a lighter weight, soft face, and a bit of drape. Sew up some wide-legged pull-on pants to enjoy the movement of this fabric, or knock out a wrap dress or knit top to wear to the office. Next up is this dramatic polyester crepe georgette we call Culture Wildflowers. Choose a pattern that does not have many seams, to best showcase the large print on this lightweight, fluid woven.

Silhouettes #2010 “Three-piece Yoga Skirt”
Culture Border pebble crepe has a slight mechanical stretch across the grain, tiny clusters of flowers in the middle 36” and two borders that measure 8.25” each. Extending out from those borders are additional inches of solid black that you can use in your hems so you don’t lose out on any of the pretty design. See more images on our website. If your swatch is all black, please contact us for a new swatch. Among the terra cotta, ivory and pale turquoise is a subdued coral that pops when you wear your border print fabric paired with Culture Mellow cotton rib knit. For a classic look, sew a knit top using the smooth side as the focus and create a binding from the ribbed side. Then wear your new coral top over a flowing skirt or wide legged pull-on pants made from Culture Crinkle rayon print. The coral motifs brighten up the subdued burgundy in this breezy woven.

With one pass of your scissors along the curved cutting line, the pockets appear from the cut-away pieces….and the rest of the construction is just as easy. Based on a one-size concept, this tunic can be narrowed or shortened by pleating out the extra length or width. The River Tunic silhouette can be flattering on most body types and will enhance your summer or winter wardrobes. The instructions include sizing ideas, adjusting the silhouette & pleating ideas. It really is like magic when color stories come together for us. We started with the plaid in this collection and gathered fabrics that would look well with it. All three solids bring out a different aspect in the plaid. Let’s begin with Festival Knit, a navy lightweight Tshirt knit that has a slightly warmer cast to it, blending beautifully with the darker lines of Festival Plaid, a poly/cotton shirting. You can easily wear a plaid button-down shirt over your navy Tshirt in the summer, or toss your plaid top over a surplice dress sewn from Festival Gold knit suede cloth. On the next page you’ll find Festival Lawn, a dark periwinkle stretch cotton that feels like a soft breeze of air against the skin. Sew it into a simple shell to wear with a golf skirt or camp shirt made from Festival Fields stretch cotton broadcloth. The pale indigo is a subtle accent on the ground of black helping to make the camel and ivory hues jump off the print.

Festival Collection The idea behind creating the “Woodstock Music and Art Fair” was simple enough - it was to raise money towards the creation of a music recording studio in upstate New York. Several popular, young artists lived up there, including Bob Dylan, and if a studio could be located there, the studio owners might get first crack at recording rights to new songs so the artists didn’t have to travel into NYC. Four men came together to set things in motion for the music festival. The studio and festival were the brain child of Michael Lang and Artie Kornfeld, while the financial infusion to produce and promote the music festival came from Joel Rosenman and John P. Roberts, a couple of young and wealthy investors looking to make a lot of money off the scheme. It was hard for festival organizers to sign well-known performers at first, but once Creedence Clearwater Revival signed on, other bands and solo performers across the country agreed to perform. There were problems securing land for the event, as various towns didn’t want a bunch of drugged out hippies traipsing through their lands. Max Yasgur in Bethel offered his 600 acre dairy farm for a respectable fee and organizers went to work building security fences and ticket booths to contain and control the estimated 50,000 attendees for the planned two day event. Advanced sale tickets were printed and sold at grocery stores: $7 for a one day pass, $13 for a 2-day pass, $18 for a 3-day pass. As the music line-up came together, ticket sales skyrocketed.

Start sewing your autumn wardrobe now so you have some wonderful options when the cold winds begin to blow. Begin with Reality Paisley, a reversible stretch cotton jacket fabric in dark brown and warm cafe au lait. If you want to take advantage of the subtle stretch, cut your pattern pieces across the grain instead of on grain - but if you are making a fuller cut jacket it won’t be necessary. Complete a new ensemble by wearing your new jacket over a simple blouse from Reality Auburn, a warm brown rayon challis, and tailor slacks from Reality Stone stretch cotton twill. So sharp!

Reality Collection Organizers originally estimated they’d draw an audience of 50,000, but ticket pre-sales raised the estimate to 200,000. Then, days before the start of the festival, thousands of people gate crashed the event, finding gaps in the fencing that was still under construction. This completely caught the promoters of the event by surprise. Hundreds of hippies on the interstate ran out of gas while sitting in traffic on the way to Bethel, prompting them to abandon their cars and walk the rest of the way to Farmer Max’s land. Fearing a mob scene at the ticket booths, the organizers declared Woodstock to be a free festival and let everyone in, avoiding a human pile up. It’s astounding that there were only two fataities. One person died from a drug overdose, and another was run over by a tractor (note to readers: do not seek shelter from the rain by sleeping under a tractor). The organizers weren’t sure if they had enough bathrooms, or even enough food. As a backup - they were planning to airlift rice like a refugee camp in case concession stands ran out. Governor Nelson Rockefeller even threatened to send 10,000 New York State National Guard troops to the event, concerned by the large crowds, poor sanitation and food shortages. Without ticket sales, and having no way to immediately pay the artists, the festival was over $1million in debt at its close and organizers were being sued by several entities. Brilliantly, the festival organizers had the forethought to hire a young movie director named Martin Scorsese to film a documentary of the event. The three-hour film journey did help bring in additional funds, including $50 million in 1970 as a limited release event in movie theaters, the most profitable film of the year. Final attendance estimates for the weekend range between 400,000 and half a millino people.

To soften things up we are offering Reality Transpose double woven reversible cotton gauze in a two-tone brown floral design. We have seen this made into a shoulder wrap to take to a restaurant on a summer evening when you need a little buffer between bare arms and air conditioning. We know how much our subscribers love the lightweight rayon challis we offer, so Reality Snow is here as a companion for this collection to brighten things a bit for those of you in warmer climates. You will also appreciate Reality Novelty semi-sheer brown paisley knit. This is slightly more opaque than an onion skin. Even though it looks dark and heavy it is super soft and gossamer light.

Aquarius Collection The musical Hair declared “This is the dawning of the age of Aquarius” - a time of peace and love and universal harmony. Woodstock totally saw the fruition of this prophetic vision while providing history with iconic musical moments. Rolling Stone Magazine ranks it as the 19th most important event in rock & roll history. Many of the performers are still household names to this day. Woodstock was supposed to open with the psychedelic band Sweetwater, but they got stuck in the massive traffic jam. So Richie Haven took the stage to open the music fest, and he played for three hours while other bands struggled to get to the festival. His last song, Freedom, was, according to Woodstock50.com, an improvised jam that became his signature moment. Joan Baez was six months pregnant and didn’t take the stage until 1:00 am, yet was still able to provide a smooth finish to a very chaotic first day. After a line of storms passed through the area, day two got underway letting the sun shine in on the muddy grounds. A new group called Santana was well received, and the performance helped with sell their first record, released after Woodstock. As evening fell, Canned Heat arrived via helicopter in time to take the stage. The Grateful Dead’s set of five extended-play songs mellowed the tired, drugged out crowd, creating a less than favorable situation for Creedence Clearwater Revival, the Saturday headliner that took the stage after midnight. They were so upset by the sleepy crowd they insisted their footage be cut from the documentary. Day three kicked off with a 24 song set by The Who followed by Jefferson Airplane, Joe Cocker, Janis Joplin and many other music giants of the time. The last act of the concert was festival headliner Jimi Hendrix. He insisted in his contract that he would be the last performer, which he thought would occur late Sunday night. But delays and long sets pushed his performance to 9am Monday morning, when only an estimated 25,000 were left to witness his now famous rendition of The Star Spangled Banner. Taking pride in his performance, his Woodstock set was one of the longest, and most famous, in his career.

Aquarius Diamonds brushed SofKnit features a rustic looking design with dark army green background, royal, mint, black and white accents. There’s a lot of good stretch both lengthwise and crosswise. The background color is a perfect match to Aquarius Army rayon /linen blend. If you are one of the many people who snapped up this weave in our eight colors featured in the Summer 2019 catalog, you surely will want to add this to your wardrobe. It’s an easy fabric to cut and sew, comfortable to wear, and can be washed or dry cleaned. You surely have sewing patterns that will call for a medium weight woven such as this, and the neutral color can serve as a plain backdrop to lively prints in your wardrobe. Aquarius Heather is a flecked cotton knit that has the look of a sweater knit but the weight of a nicer designer T-shirt. Not only do we recommend this for any number of knit tops, we also like this fabric for elastic waist pajama style pants for lounging around the house on a day off. If you sew a lightweight cardigan style top from the heathered knit, wear it over a boat neck blouse made from Aquarius Scratch. This low luster charmeuse print features lime, teal, chocolate, black and cream in both an animal and an abstract print in alternating fashion. Now, sew up a jeans jacket and pants from Aquarius Denim reversible stretch cotton. We also love this as a top pick for a motorcycle jacket, with an asymmetrical zippered front and large collar that shows the reverse.

Historic Collection In a time active with Civil Rights marches and protests, a seemingly unending war and devastating military draft, and a race for dominance in outer space, young people craved an escape to a more peaceful place to just hang out and love one another. They found that on a farmland in upstate New York and proved the adage that when people want peace, peace can be achieved. Historic crowd size for a music festival, a complete lack of civil disobedience, and the overwhelming talent of the performers made for one hell of a weekend, and a legacy that will last until the end of time. If you missed the original Woodstock, get your tickets now for Woodstock 50, August 16th-19th in Watkins Glen, New York. Famous singers, such as Miley Cyrus, Chance the Rapper, and Jay-Z, will all be performing. Though it can’t be expected to be as culturally important or glorious as the original, the fact that it was loved so much that they had to bring it back shows the true passion people continue to have for music. The original reflected the music of the younger generation, and Woodstock 50 will reflect the music popular with youth today.
