Dana Marie #1032 “Baltimore Coat”

Highlander Collection We’ve gone mad for plaid in our Winter 2019 holiday inspired catalog. So many amazing options became available to us this year, we couldn’t pass them up. They even inspired the theme for our collection names - the history of tartans and plaids. Join us as we look at the origins and evolution of Gaelic tartans, the historical difference between tartan and plaid, and why we love these designs so much this time of year for garments and decorating. Yes, we realize the cross-woven plaid design has been around for thousands of years - thank you Madras! - but we are focusing specifically on the Highlands - thank you Outlander! Such a torrid history exists for Highland tartans. Woven for warmth and practicality, adopted as the native dress of a people, outlawed by invading forces, and reemergence as a cultural icon. If you know nothing of this history, you are in for a treat, and at the end of the catalog we will give you some best practices for sewing plaids. Let’s begin with a brief history. In Scotland, the original tartans were mainly simple checks woven from two or three colors of dyed wool. Fibers were dyed with native plants, and each region had different plants they used. These colors became identifiers for the regions, and subsequently for the clans within the regions. One long cloth was woven, then wrapped around the waist and belted, and the excess could be thrown over the shoulder then tucked into the belted skirt, or wrapped around the torso for warmth, or used as a blanket for sleeping. Men wore their tartans shorter which was more practical for the warrior on the go, while women wore their skirts longer for modesty. A broach of the clan flower or plant would be affixed to a man’s knit wool cap or to a lady’s garment near the breast. A wood pattern stick called a dalbh was used by weavers to keep track of increasingly complex tartan designs as colors developed through more sophisticated dying techniques. The color repeat was notched out onto the stick as a reference during weaving. It is reported that one woman won her lawsuit against a weaver when he didn’t follow her dalbh exactly.

Angela Wolf #5314 “The Evelyn Dress & Jacket”

Culloden Collection After centuries of warring against each other, the clans of the Scottish Highlands united against a common enemy, the British crown, during the Jacobite uprisings between 1689 and 1746. After the death of Queen Elizabeth I in 1603, the Tudor Dynasty ended and gave way to the House of Stuart. Queen Anne was the last of that line, but not without trying for an heir. If you saw the movie The Favourite you will no doubt remember the 17 rabbits she cared for which represented her seventeen children who either died through miscarriage, as stillborns or during childhood. At the start of her reign, the countries of England, Ireland and Scotland all recognized her as monarch, but operated with different governments. She united them under one government in the 1707 Acts of Union, and became the first monarch of a united Great Britain. When Anne died in 1714 without any surviving children, the crown went to her protestant Hanoverian cousin, rather than her Catholic half-brother, James Francis Edward Stuart. Jacobites - Northern Scots who wanted a Catholic Stuart on the throne - repeatedly tried to overthrow the crown’s rule in Northern Scotland. [Sidenote: Jacobite comes from Jacobus, the Latin for James.] In 1746, at the moors of Culloden in Scotland, Hanoverian forces lead by the Duke of Cumberland defeated the clans in about an hour, leaving nearly 2000 Highlanders dead, compared to roughly 300 felled soldiers of the crown. To add insult to grave injury, The Dress Act of 1746 made it illegal for common Highland men to wear the tartan and any other Highlander garments. Penalties for wearing any kilts, tartans or plaids started with six months imprisonment and went up to “transportation” for repeat offenders, meaning a trip overseas to work on royal plantations for seven years. The Battle of Culloden also marked the end of the feudal reign of clans in Scotland. Clan chieftains became obsolete. The Dress Act was repealed in 1782, just 36 years later, but the tradition of wearing the tartan and kilt had all but died off in everyday dress.

We were so excited to find this Blackwatch inspired wool blend plaid. The classic colors and medium weight are ideal for jackets and kilts alike. Whether you are embracing your Scottish heritage or preparing for the next season of Outlander on Starz, order plenty of Culloden Tartan to pleat in the skirt, or to sew into a cool jacket and vest.

The slight hint of dark red in Culloden Tartan lead us to hunt for the perfect solid fabric for a knit top or dress, and we found it in Culloden Scarlet (page 5). This ponte di Roma double knit is lightweight and supple, with a soft face. Subtle striations provide a little surface character. Will you sew a polo style top, a ruched dress, or a sweater set? Treat yourself to them all! We couldn’t pass up this crinkled georgette. The colors are spot on for our collection, and it would be a fun overlay in a dress, as well as a beautiful accent scarf. Culloden Argyle has an obvious diagonal, so choose your pattern wisely.

When we priced out houndstooth wool jackets, the ready-to-wear options ranged from $300-$1500 from most reputable stores and designers. This is why we sew - custom fit with fine fabrics for less than high fashion prices. In this issue we are featuring two wool houndstooth fabrics. The first is Clan Houndstooth which combines winter white with a wonderful dark teal. This can be tailored into a striking sport coat for him and a sharp blazer or three-quarter length jacket for her. If you work in a heated office, take your new wool jacket off to reveal a lightweight, ruched top sewn from Clan Lapis. This Tencel® rayon is cold water washable but we recommend laying it flat to dry to retain its shape while it’s wet.

Clan Collection On July 1, 1782, a proclamation was posted throughout the Highlands in both English and Scots Gaelic: Listen Men. This is bringing before all the Sons of the Gael, the King and Parliament of Britain have forever abolished the act against the Highland Dress; which came down to the Clans from the beginning of the world to the year 1746. This must bring great joy to every Highland Heart. You are no longer bound down to the unmanly dress of the Lowlander. This is declaring to every Man, young and old, simple and gentle, that they may after this put on and wear the Truis, the Little Kilt, the Coat, and the Striped Hose, as also the Belted Plaid, without fear of the Law of the Realm or the spite of the enemies. By this time, many of the northern weavers had died and their dalbhs had rotted, so designs were lost. However, The Dress Act did not pertain to the gentry, women, military regiments and lowland Scots, just the Braveheart-type warrior clansmen of the north. William Wilson from Bannockburn, just south of the Highlands,

started weaving tartans for military regiments and gentry in 1765. He standardized setts - the design repeat for a tartan and assigned them numbers, then began naming the setts for the cities of each regiment or for families. He and his sons cornered this niche market. When King George IV decided to visit Edinburgh in 1822, the king thought it would be grand if people attending official functions wore their tartans that he had heard about. It seems he wasn’t informed that tartans were not really woven and worn anymore. Not to disappoint the King, people scrambled to get tartans made, quickly designing patterns with weavers, such as William Wilson & Sons who had compiled a book in 1819 cataloging hundreds of designs. Most of the “clan” tartans we know today were created for, or after, this royal visit. If you look online at the Scottish Register of Tartans, there are thousands of designs listed. You can even create, name and register your own.

We know many of you love to wear winter white, so we chose a lovely ponte di Roma double-knit to enhance the Clan collection. Lightweight for a ponte, this is still very substantial (page 10). Clan Snow will look wonderful when sewn as a dress or separates, and it looks so smart when paired with the houndstooth or our next knit. Clan Lillehammer is a novelty double-knit with a Nordic inspired design. Treat yourself to an oversized sweater or cardigan (and make one to give as a gift). We found the perfect companion to wear as a handsome knit top. Clan Harbor is a smart choice for sewing polos and crewnecks, raglans and ruched tops. Make gifts for the whole family from these two knits.

Sewing Workshop “Florence Top”

In 1842, Queen Victoria and Prince Albert first traveled together to Scotland. The landscape reminded Albert of his homeland in Coburg - now Bavaria, Germany. The royal couple fell in love with the country and set out to purchase land privately, so it would be part of their family estate, not belonging to the estate of the crown. September 28, 1853, Queen Victoria laid the foundation stone for a new, larger castle to be built on the grounds at Balmoral. She even buried a time capsule under the foundation stone, encapsulating a parchment with the date, along with a coin from each of her realms. To commemorate their new Scottish residence, Prince Albert designed the Royal Balmoral Tartan. According to The Scottish Register of Tartans, it is “predominantly grey with overchecks of red and black; the background contains threads of black and white yarns twisted together to achieve the appearance of the rough hewn granite so familiar in Royal Deeside.” It is a highly restrictive design, worn exclusively by members of the royal family with the Queen’s permission. The only non-family member allowed to wear the Balmoral Tartan is the Queen’s personal piper. Rather than the tartan, the Balmoral Tweed is worn by other castle estate workers. A smaller sett was scaled for royal children. Kinloch Anderson are the holders of the Royal Warrant for weaving new Balmoral Tartan garments, and they also hold the sample of the original designed by Prince Albert. But the prince wasn’t done with garments. The entire Balmoral Castle was decorated in the Highland style with plenty of tartans, from curtains to furniture to rugs. Lytton Strachey wrote in his biography Queen Victoria in 1921: Upon the interior decorations Albert and Victoria lavished all their care. The wall and the floors were of pitch-pine, and covered with specially manufactured tartans. The Balmoral tartan, in red and grey, designed by the Prince, and the Victoria tartan....” Some rooms still sport the Highland style full of tartans and taxidermy trophy heads mounted on the walls, which can be viewed during guided tours. If you really want to treat yourself, rent a cabin on the estate for a week : www.balmoralcastle.com.

Loes Hinse #5208 “Oxford Pant”

When King George IV visited Scotland in 1822, he did create a tizzy. In celebration of the native dress, he called for attendants to official functions to wear their respective clan tartans. Since the old designs were all lost and forgotten, weavers were commissioned to create new setts for the occasion. Don’t kid yourself - there isn’t just one tartan per clan. Here is a breakdown of types of tartans needed per clan, should you endeavor to create a tartan for your family. Clan Tartan - for general use by clans in an everyday capacity. Dress Tartan - Reserved for more formal occasions and ceremonies, these were originally worn by women and had a white background with the clan colors. Mourning Tartan - Generally woven exclusively in black and white. Hunting Tartan - created for clans that had bright colors, these were darker versions to be worn when hunting...a Highland camouflage. Chief ’s Tartan - restricted use for the chieftain and his immediate family, much the same way the Royal Balmoral is restricted to the Queen and members of her family to whom she has granted permission. Before George’s visit, there were about 250 tartan designs listed in Wm Wilson’s 1819 Key Pattern Book, with only 100 having names instead of numbers. With designs now ranging in the thousands, there seems to be a tartan for everyone. Not only can descendants of clans look up familial designs, but fashion houses can register modern weaves. Yes, Burberry has several tartans listed with the Register of Scottish Tartans, along with Brooks Brothers, Callaway Golf, three entries for Glenlivet Distilleries Ltd, and even two listings for 3M’s Scotch Tape. Our favorite design is a recent addition, created in 2018 to honor 100 years of women’s suffrage in the UK. Designed by Margi Lawson, three colors are used: green, white and violet. The first letter of each color represents the words “Give Women Votes”.

We love novelty fabrics, and Revival Baroque was coveted by boutique designers as they shopped at our warehouse while it was being unpacked and processed for the catalog. This soft double knit features a burgundy and black romantic motif on the face, a moderately supple hand and full body. We envision it being sewn into a cardigan, a sweater dress, or a cowl neck knit tunic with bell sleeves. What will you choose? Whatever it is, create a full ensemble by pairing it with Revival Nacht, a “Scuba lite” knit. This is the type of fabric that screams little black dress! FitNice Systems “Surena Jacket”

The first three fabrics in the Misnomer Collection came to us from our favorite importer. You have to admit they are handsome with the brick red, black and cream palette. Misnomer Plaid cotton lawn sports a micro-houndstooth. The super soft hand reminds us of a fine washed combed cotton. Misnomer Clay cotton seersucker is wearable all year as a button down shirt or vest. It’s weight is substantial enough to sew into shorts or a summer jacket. Choose Misnomer Check, a novelty cross-woven wool. for a sport coat and office attire. We show it here lined with the clay seersucker.

Meanwhile, Misnomer Onyx is a strong black entry to our viscoserich ponte di Roma double knits. We have offered two other fabrics similar to this in past catalogs, both have sold out fairly quickly. If you missed either, please don’t delay in scooping this up.

We found some other fabrics to enhance the brick red theme, starting with Misnomer Waves. This polyester SofTouch feels similar to a peachskin and can be enjoyed as a tunic or blouse.

Misnomer Collection What if in Scotland’s wilds we viel’d our head, Where tempests whistle round the sordid bed; Where the rug’s two-fold use we might display, By night a blanket, and a plaid by day. - Oliver Goldsmith Here in the States we think of a plaid as interlocking stripes of colors, and we regard tartans as uniquely Scottish familial designs worn in kilts. But, as with so many things, we’ve got it all wrong, at least in a historical context. According to Celtic Life International, plaide is a Scots Gaelic word for “blanket” and refers to a long length of wool material - a blanket or rug used in Highland dress. Some believe the phrase “the whole 9 yards” refers to this length of cloth. The highlander kilts were originally called “belted plaids” and were just long lengths of wool fabric wrapped around and belted at the waist, the excess thrown over the shoulder to be used as a cape and hood in cold

or inclement weather, and the whole cloth was used as a blanket for sleeping. The warriors could wade through rivers and climb rugged terrain in this open, knee length garment, which was thrown off when battle ensued, revealing the tunic below. The Scots Gaelic word plaide may be a shortened version of the Old French for sheepskin, peallaid. The Scots Gaelic word tartan could have origins in the Old French tartarin referring to a rich fabric imported from the ethnic Tartars in Volga, or from the Gaelic tarsainn meaning “across.” Patterned cloth from the Gaelic-speaking Scottish Highlands was called breacan, meaning “many colors,” but in the late medieval times the words breacan and tartan became used interchangeably. The Scots word kilt comes from the Old Norse kjalta which refers to the folds of a gathered skirt. In the late medieval period, belt loops were sewn to the plaides, so the lower half, the kilted portion, would fold neatly when pulled flat with a drawcord and expand to full length when a blanket was needed.

If you think Misnomer Blossoms looks familiar, we featured similar cabbage rose designs on two sweater knits from the same supplier in our Early Spring 2019 catalog (VF191-01 & VF191-03). Now we proffer two prints on Liverpool crepe knit (this and #40). The subtle hues of clay and rose gold, accented by the muted olive of the leaves, is tossed against a background of black. Liverpool crepe knits are popular for their ease of sewing, wearing, and washing, and they pack up well for travel.

Designed for knits with over 35% crossgrain stretch. Recommended Fabrics: Jersey, panne, lightweight sweater knits, interlock, stretch velvet, crepe knits, some pontes. Bust = 31.2”-45”

Waist = 22.5”-37”

Hip = 32.35”-47”

Kwik Sew give yardages for 60” widths only. These can be made with narrower fabrics as well. For 60” width, you will need between 13/4 yards - 21/8 yards for View A and 7/8 yards - 13/8 yards for View B. If using a narrower fabric, we recommend you purchase enough to cut one length for your back, one length for your front and one length for your sleeves. Get extra if you are pattern matching down the front.

You may have seen by now that the little papers with your swatch packs say Misnomer for this collection instead of Holiday. We regret the error. Please pay close attention to the part number when you are placing your order so we send you the correct fabric.

We can’t let the jewel tones have all the fun. Holiday Romance is a rose gold version of the crushed stretch velvet, and it perfectly matches the flowers in both floral Liverpool crepe knits that flank it. We were thrilled when we found Holiday Blossoms because it ties together the rose gold of the crushed velvet and the richness of the jade stretch satin in this collection. That pop of jade color is fresh, so don’t miss out on the chance to wear a floral knit top with slacks sewn from Holiday Jade for a festive ensemble. This medium weight stretch woven fabric is ready to be tailored into any number of suiting separates for work or play.

We have two plaid cotton shirting fabrics in this collection, so of course we named them after Victoria and Albert! First, let’s look at Holiday Victoria, a combed cotton shirtweight flannel cross-woven of mallard, pale lilac, red, white and dove grey. Although the design is small, it is a one way plaid, so use your nap layout (which we recommend for all plaids). Jump ahead to Holiday Albert, cross-woven of mallard, navy and banker’s grey accented by white, light blue and yellow. Why not sew a nice shirt to give as a gift this season? Whip up a quick skirt from Holiday Mallard, a lightweight but tightly woven polyester peachskin from Robert Kaufman.

Holiday Collection So why do we see so many plaids this time of year? We have a theory about that. In the United States, we seem to be thrown back into Dickensian/Victorian times every Christmastide. Costumed carolers, Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol and Clement Clark Moore’s immortal 1822 poem, A Visit from St. Nicholas, better known as The Night Before Christmas, are annual family favorites. The young Queen Victoria ascended to the throne in 1837 at the age of 18 and she soon became a fashion icon, beginning with her choice to wear white on her wedding day, instead of the colorful dresses that brides had been wearing for centuries. During her reign, technology saw the creation of synthetic dyes, mass production of sewing machines, and escalation in the publication of fashion magazines. The dyes allowed fabric manufacturers to produce more colorful fabrics, and what better way to showcase these than crisscrossing bright combinations of colors in plaid fabrics and ribbons. The industrial revolution brought more textile options to the masses, which were for sale at fixed prices in new places called department stores. Many of these new stores were created by fabric merchants and offered fabrics and ribbons, hats, furs and fans, plus jewelry and clocks. Sewing machines meant faster production in making clothes, not just for tailors and dressmakers, but families and estates could invest in one for the household or for the servants downstairs. Rising literacy rates, a decrease in British newspaper tax, plus faster and cheaper methods of printing lead to the emergence of a new booming industry: Ladies Magazines. Articles about sewing and fashion inspired women, while ads for mail order pattern blocks gave birth to the pattern industry (plus a new advertising demographic - women!)

Silhouette Patterns #75 “Phillip’s Cape”

Loes Hinse #5105 “Zip Front Jacket”

Lets add some wool into this wintery issue, shall we? Sew a cape or jacket out of Fashion Plaid, a loose and light weight wool check cross-woven from black and tan yarns. If sport coats and wool separates are more to your liking, we present you with Fashion Houndstooth. This is from the same mill as Clan Houndstooth (VF196-15 teal and cream), but this black version also throws in several tiny, colorful threads, like muted confetti sprinkled into the weave. They are so subtle, but do add a bit of character to the textile. We wanted to make sure you had a good fabric for slacks so we found Fashion Millbrook, a stretch woven cotton twill in beige. The reverse has a flat weave, which will give you a different look if you use a pattern where the reverse will show. Unlike most other stretch wovens, this one stretches 25% both across the grain and along it. For all you knit lovers, we chose a divinely soft sweater knit in grey, with a tempestuous print that hints at a brown and tan paisley. Fashion Paisley begs to be added to your wardrobe as a long pull-over top or sweater dress. Remember the extra-wide fabric we told you about in the light grey, VF196-23? Here it is again as Fashion Snuggle, a dark grey cotton sweatshirt fleece. The tightly knit face gives way to a fluffy and fleece-soft reverse. It is stable enough to take a zipper for zipfront hoodie jackets to go over your paisley sweater dress.

Fashion Collection

Loes Hinse #5303 “New York Dress”

The popularity of plaid fashion made its way to the United States in the 19th century and became iconically intertwined with Civil War dresses. The full skirts were made like glorified kilts, pleating the waist and leaving the bottom hem full to flow down over a cage crinoline, or hoop skirt. Women with more money could afford more yardage and create pieced garments with intricate designs and bias panels. In 1830, the Woolrich company was founded by John Rich and Daniel McCormick “for the purpose of manufacturing fabric for the wives of hunters, loggers and trappers” in the United States. According to the Woolrich website, “John Rich immigrated from England, started his first woolen mill, then travelled to local lumber camps and farms, selling woolen fabrics, socks, coverlets, and yarn from his mule cart.” In 1850, Woolrich introduced the famous red and black Buffalo Check, allegedly so named because the designer owned a herd of buffalo. Their wools offered several plaid and check designs, which became the uniform of the rugged, laboring outdoorsman as opposed to the suits worn in cities. This iconic company provided fabrics and blankets not only for common Americans, but also for the Union Army during the Civil War as well as for our military forces during both World Wars. Today we see plaid fashions everywhere from L.L. Bean to H&M. Why? Blogger Jordan Detmer’s theory surmises it’s the result of a post-2008 receccionary mentality in which urban dwellers long for the simpler pleasures of more authentic living. Farm to table dining, farmers markets, urban farming, craft beers, country music and reality TV shows with rugged, outdoor settings all became popular within the last ten years, along with the associated “hipster” fashion. People not belonging to this youthful, urban sub-culture refer to them as hipsters, while others, like Detmer, regard the plaid fashion of the beard growing, boot wearing squad as “lumbersexual,” a reactionary term playing on the previous generation’s clean-cut, fashion oriented “metrosexual.”

We have a showstopper to offer you, but we couldn’t cut the thousands of swatches needed to supply everyone. If you are a catalog subscriber and want a sample of this, please call Customer Service and request it for free - we will provide a sample larger than the normal size we present in the catalog. Fashion Dazzle is an art deco inspired velvet adorned with tiny copper sequins. It is simply striking. Each selvage has a few inches of black velvet, then the sequins start. An identical border design 91/2” wide leads into a central design that is 36” wide. You can cut this cross grain to use the border designs at the hems. You can also cut this along the grain using just the 36” center, and reserve the borders as add-on decorations to the bodice, hem, and cuffs. The stretch goes across the grain, not along it, so add plenty of ease if you cut your pattern cross-grain. This is a weighty fabric, so shorter garments are advised. Technique Collection Saf-T-Pockets #9800 “Two for the Road” - Jacket FitNice Systems Dolman for Wovens

It’s really not that tricky to sew plaids. Don’t be afraid. Follow a few simple techniques to match up your plaids for rave reviews. 1] Match plaids first in the front, then the back, then the sides. Progress from most visible to least visible. For example - on a side seam, the hip or waist will be more visible than under the arm. 2] Cut the fabric as a single layer, not folded. 3] Draw out any pattern pieces that are “cut on fold” so you have a full pattern piece. (We recommend Bosal’s Create-a-Pattern.) 4] Lay fabric and pattern pieces right side up. Fold back seam allowances when trying to match vertical lines at a seam or front placket. 5] It’s easiest to lay out all pattern pieces at one time cross-grain, so you can see the horizontal line and ensure it hits the pattern pieces in the right places. 6] Match pattern pieces at the most visual point along the stitching line. If your pattern piece has a seam allowance on the tissue, it will help to fold that back when figuring out where to match up lines. 7] Princess seams are difficult or impossible to match nicely. Either come to terms with non-matching panels, or cut the side fronts on the bias to avoid the issue. If you are small busted, and you have the patience of a saint, give it a try and remember to match the most focal point of the horizontal lines across the bustline, do not try to match the verticals. These will get you started. There are many tutorials and videos on the internet and Youtube for more details.

Our third entry for the delectable cotton sweatshirt fleece is Technique Snuggle in cappuccino brown. Go beyond hoodies and sweaters. Wear this as a knit cape you can throw over your shoulders at work or when the cold winds creep under your doors. We also think it would be a wonderful choice for pajama style loungewear when you want to curl up and read a good book on a snowy day. Between the Fashion and Technique collections we found several brown, tan and grey fabrics for you. Technique Wildcat, a semi-sheer knit, is lightweight like an onion skin but with a bit more opacity in the grey areas. This would be fantastic as an infinity scarf and a ruched or cowl neck top. For our last entry we present to you Technique Plaid, a worsted wool blend in two-tone dark grey. This tightly woven tweed-like fabric is perfect for coats, capes, and jumpers.
