Norse Collection Thousands of years ago, the Germanic peoples spread out across northern Europe. One hearty group traveled north to the rolling regions of what is today known as Scandinavia. Over the centuries the language evolved, and so to did the Germanic mythology, keeping warrior themes but creating a richer, more defined ethos. These people of the north countries, the Norsemen, thrived as warriors and seafarers. Inland villages consisted of hunters and traders, while those near the shore crafted long ships for traversing the North Sea to trade (and pillage) in northern Scotland, the Hebrides, and far beyond. These ships were constructed of wood, then reinforced with tarred wool and hair to make the hulls impervious to water. Powered by strong men with long oars plus one giant woolen sail, the thin, light ships could travel as far as Newfoundland and Asia, and negotiate passages as shallow as one meter deep. Vikings were seen by early Christians as brutish and dirty pagans, but if we dig further into chronicles of the 8th-11th centuries, we find accounts of Viking cleanliness and their beautiful appearance. They washed their face everyday with a soap so strong it could bleach their hair golden yellow. They brushed their long locks and beards everyday, and women created intricate braids which wrapped around their heads, protecting the coveted golden tresses. They even bathed once a week in their regulated baths stemming from hot springs, an unheard of act by most Christians in the British Isles who did not bathe regularly until the later medieval period. In honor of the incredibly rich history of these Nordic people, we derive the names for our fabric collections in this catalog. Snuggle up with your best boar skin blanket, grab some warm mead and get ready to learn a bit about the great Norse history while fondling your fabric swatches and planning your Early Spring 2020 wardrobe conquests.

We begin our Early Spring 2020 catalog with a strikingly diverse group of fabrics in warm tones, perfect for midwinter on Midgard. Our first offering is the very last of Logantex’s Sophia ponte double knit in rust. There is very limited yardage of Norse Rustic, so order early if you like this - we can’t get any more. The soft hand and medium weight make this an ideal choice for a sweater set. We pulled together what we had left in stock because the color was too perfect a match to the rust in Norse Motif, a beautiful rayon challis print. Whether you choose to sew a flowing skirt, wide leg pull-on pants, a tunic or loose blouse, choose a simple sewing pattern that will showcase the print. Norse Warmth is a marvelous 100% wool knit in taupe and black with hints of the same beige and steel blue as the challis print. This is the perfect choice for crafting a chunky sweater, a cardigan, or a handsome shawl to toss over your shoulders. Save 25% during the exclusive Member Only period before the fabric is available to the general public. If you have trouble viewing the fabrics for this catalog online, please contact us so we can make sure your account is set up correctly. Silhouette Patterns #5019 “Angel’s Leggings”

The next two fabrics are both wool and polyester blends. We don’t know the exact fiber percentages of Norse Furrows, but we do want to draw your eye to the unusual weave and light weight of this neutral beauty. Tailor a languid jacket à la Loes Hinse, or choose this for sewing a button down shirt from Sewing Workshop or Cutting Line Designs. Then wear your new fashion piece with slacks tailored from Norse Night, a blended black crepe from Burlington. This extra wide fabric is a bargain at $9.99 per yard. To tie the colors together, we offer Norse Waves, a polyester crepe de chine print featuring waves of rust, dark beige, cream and black. Treat yourself to a simple shell or blouse to wear to work with a jacket and skirt from the black crepe.

Cutting Line Designs #50519 “Fun with Fabrics Jacket” - Cut Crossgrain
Edda Taupe is a lightweight and fluid double knit, similar to the Sophia. And look at how perfectly the color matches the taupe in Edda Dunes stretch cotton reversible brocade.
p.6
The stretch runs lengthwise, so we recommend you cut your sewing pattern across the grain rather than along the grain to take advantage of getting the stretch around your body.
Edda Collection
The early Norse spent their time on important things, like farming, hunting and fighting. Travelling minstrels regaled villagers with poetic songs of the gods, epic battles between frost giants and fire giants, the creation of the universe and the death of the gods during the battle at Ragnarök. As the Nordic people converted to Christianity around the turn of the first millennium, their gods were being replaced by apostles and new battles of good and evil. The myths, poems and minstrel songs that had been passed down orally were at risk of dying out. Just as the Brothers Grimm compiled their famous collection of Germanic folk and fairy tales when Napoleon Bonaparte’s campaigns threatened to dismantle Germanic culture in Europe (see our Fall 2019 catalog), similar compilations were made in 13th century Iceland to preserve the Norse Germanic poems, stories and mythology. Two massive collections, referred to as eddas, have been found that include skaldic poetry, sagas and bal-
lads. If not for these tomes, we would not know some of the most incredibly rich stories involving Odin, Thor, Valhalla, Valkyries and more. The Prose Edda, compiled by Icelandic scholar and chieftain Snorri Sturluson around 1220, is a sort of guidebook on Nordic poetry, including poems and explanations on how to write proper skaldic poetry. Sturluson was not unlike a modern scholar compiling the works of Shakespeare along with a guide on how to compose in iambic pentameter and rhyming couplets. The Poetic Edda contains numerous poems of Nordic mythology. Most of these poems are found in the Codex Regius, a manuscript from around the year 1270 full of Icelandic poems and ballads. Collectively, the earliest written examples of all of these stem from after the year 1200, as a means of preservation by the Christians of Scandinavian descent. Prior to the eddas, all stories were passed down orally or through runes.

Rune Collection In addition to the eddas, some heroic accounts have survived the centuries in a most unusual way: rune stones. Over 6000 large stones were etched with runic language and graphics to tell tales, or mark special locations and events. If you’ve only heard of runes from an occasional mention in the Harry Potter books, lets take a moment to explore this archaic writing. First, rune is an ancient Gothic word for secret or whisper. Runology is the study of ancient runic script, which was said to have magic powers, including the ability to raise the dead. Rather than going to a temple to pray to one of the many Scandinavian gods, a person need only invoke the name of the deity on the nearby rune stone to engage the mystic forces. Modern scholars say the symbols come from the Italic alphabet of the Celtic and Germanic peoples who once lived in central Italy, but the old Norse poem Hávamál (“The Sayings of the High One”) intimates that the runes are the work of Odin himself. Each symbol stood for something, like gods, chariots, giants, gifts, joy, fire, weather, etc. When pieced together, these symbols convey a story, or document an event. For example, one rune looks similar to our “F” and stands for wealth, both monetary and domestic (i.e. love or cattle). When it is written backwards, it means the loss of wealth. Look on Pinterest for runes and you’ll see giant stones carved with serpents, the runic symbols snaking through the tail, or you might see gods and wolves and chariots bordered by runic script. Don’t mistake these stones for stone circles like Stonehenge and the many types similar to the fictitious Craigh na Dun on Outlander. Stone circles date back thousands of years in the British Isles. Rune stones are much more modern, dating from the early to late medieval period. There are still people today who believe the ancient language can conjure magic.

When the representative from Telio & Cie came to our warehouse with their new line of fashion fabrics, we ordered the first three items in this collection specifically for this catalog. Start by sewing a cardigan or sweater-coat out of Rune Bouclé, a soft and stable knit with great body. Wear your curly creation over a knit top or sweater dress sewn from Rune Ribbed. The abstract print can easily be worn by men and women. We chose Rune Rosé as a linen/rayon woven that can be tailored into a skirt, slacks, walking shorts, dress, top....so many options! These three will totally take you from cold to warm weather flawlessly, helping you get the most from your investment. The next two fabrics seem to be competing for softness. Realm Gold is another one of our Felix Stretch Gabardine fabrics, and its color was too perfect not to use in conjunction with Realm Stripes. If this knit in gold, black and ivory looks familiar, we featured it in blue/black/ivory as VF193-01 Monaco Stripes in our Summer 2019 catalog. This washable knit is strong enough to be sewn into a bodycon dress, but we like it more for a simple top or a yoga skirt. Cable knit sweaters are very popular, and we felt terrible that we sold out so quickly the last time we offered one. When Telio & Cie showed us their new line, we had to offer this new fabric in our catalog. Realm Celtic black cable knit is extra wide, washable, and made from a soft rayon and acrylic blend. Go for a classic pull-over sweater, look cultured wearing a cardigan, or show your mettle by adding a metal zipper to the front. Angela Wolf #4200 “The Angel Boot Cut Jean”

Diane Ericson #106 “The Heart-Felt Coat”
Realm Collection Picture a giant Yew tree, large enough to hold nine kingdoms. This is Yggdrasil, the world tree which connects all of the Nordic cosmos. Nestled in the uppermost branches sits Asgard, the realm of the Æsir, the warrior gods like Odin and Thor. In the middle of the trunk rests Midgard, the middle realm of the humans which the Asgardian gods protect. The Æsir created the humans, and can reach them by traveling the bifrost, the connecting bridge we know as the rainbow. Norse cosmology includes realms filled with fire giants and frost giants, bright elves and dark elves, magic dwarves and gods who did not belong on Asgard, such as the gods of fertility and nature. It really says something about their mythological hierarchy that the war gods sat at the top, with nature and fertility on a branch to their lower side, and humans at the center of the tree. In the creation story,Yggdrasil grew from a misty void, and was bordered by the realms of Fire and Ice. Sound familiar? The HBO series Game of Thrones is based on the books by George R. R. Martin “The Lands of Fire and Ice” and Martin was influenced by some of the myths. By the time Snorri Sturluson compiled the Prose Edda in 1220, Christianity had infiltrated the mythology, and the realms of the dark elves and that of the dwarves were combined so the ninth realm at the bottom of the tree roots could be Helheim, the realm of the dead, controlled by Hel, daughter of mischievous Loki. Looking at the topography of Scandinavia, the volcanic fires heating the hot springs, dark and frosty winters, the rocky soils of Sweden, the lush southern fields of Denmark, it’s no wonder this landscape was incorporated in the myths, defining the realms of the magic creatures and deities.

We chose a dark black stretch cotton as a bottomweight option to coordinate with the last two showstoppers in this collection. Realm Sateen is tightly woven with 25% crossgrain stretch, making it ideal for a fitted dress, skirt, princess seamed jacket or slacks. The showstoppers are new from Telio & Cie. The prints are spectacular and the fabrication is outstanding. Realm Thor is a lightweight stretch velvet, Realm Loki is a pebble crepe, and both sport the same interesting geometric print in red and silver on black. Sew a long wrap top of the velvet and use the pebble crepe for the sleeves. Magnifique!

Asgard, the realm of the warrior gods - the Æsir - was ruled by Odin, the All Father. He became the archetype for literary characters like Tolkien’s Gandalf and Rowling’s Dumbledore. Odin is often depicted with a long, white beard and an eye patch. His unyielding quest for knowledge led him to gouge out his own eye in exchange for a drink from the waters of wisdom. Odin’s thirst for wisdom lead him to the Well of Urd, the waters from which Yggdrasil grows. This well is guarded by Norns, the maidens who shaped the fates of other beings by carving runes in Yggdrasil’s trunk. Odin wanted to know the mysteries of the runes, so he hung himself from one of Yggdrasil’s branches, pierced himself with his spear, and stared into the Well of Urd for nine days without food or drink until the runes deemed him worthy and revealed themselves to him, making him the mightiest being in the cosmos. Odin’s wife, Frigg, was goddess of marriage, motherhood, fertility, love, household management, and domestic arts like spinning, weaving and sewing. Although she isn’t an Æsir, she is the only other god in Valhalla to sit on Odin’s throne, Hlidskjalf, to look out over all the realms. Odin’s son, Thor, was the god of thunder. His legendary hammer, Mjöllnir, could only be handled by Thor, much like King Arthur was the only person who could remove Excalibur from the stone. Thor protected the Æsir of Asgard, as well as the humans of Midgard, especially from Loki, a shape shifting trickster whose loyalties lay with no one. Many tales survive of Loki’s trickery, including one where he cuts off the long hair of Thor’s goddess wife, Sif, while she slept. Thor threatened to break every one of Loki’s bones, so Loki promised to replace the hair. Loki visited the dark elves on Svartalfheim who were expert miners and metalsmiths, enlisted them to forge a wig of gold so lifelike it grew from Sif ’s scalp, and would show brightly in the sun, like the golden wheat she represented. Aspects of Sif ’s story remind us of Rumplestitskin, wherein a devilish elf is enlisted to replace straw with golden threads, using trickery surrounding an innocent beauty.

If you prefer sewing more casual attire, check out the next four options. Begin with Aesir Speckle, a reversible stretch cotton that can be sewn like a stretch denim or gabardine into fly front pants, jacket, skirt and vest. We love it as a bottom-weight for Aesir Dash, a truly fantastic stretch cotton shirting from Italy’s Albini Group, manufacturers of high end cottons. Featuring alternating navy pinstripes and saddle stitches on powder blue, this shirting has body and style you shouldn’t pass up! The next two are of the same ilk. First we have a cotton/linen suiting, Aesir Pinstripe, that’s ready to be sewing into slacks, jacket and vest to wear with a classic button-down shirt made from Aesir Check. These fabrics can be worn all year in the right garments, and the last two are easy options for everyone regardless of gender and age.

The next collection is an epic black, white and grey compilation. Sprinkle these outstanding options into your wardrobe, or use them together for striking outfits. We snapped up Parallel Frond when it entered our warehouse. Large white, textured leaves are tossed on a rich black, printed stable knit. If your swatch is all black, contact us for a free replacement. You can wear this as a knock-out dress with strappy heels, or sew it into a long, fluid, open jacket to wear over a dress of Parallel Ivoire, a light ivory Liverpool crepe knit. Liverpool comes in a variety of colors, viewable on our website.

We were debating which of the next two fabrics we should include in the catalog. We loved them so much, we decided to offer you both! Parallel Hexagon is a black and ivory geometric lightweight double knit print. Parallel Angles (page 26) is a sharp black and white lightweight double knit print. Their soft hand is absolutely delicious! They will make bold choices as knit tops & sweaters, dresses and pull-on pants. They can also be paired with Parallel Nacht (page 26), a firmer double knit in rich black. The tighter knit provides greater stability for more tailored garments, like princess seamed tops and dresses, zippered slacks and jackets. p. 25

Parallel Collection
p. 26
Mythologies evolve over centuries and inevitably borrow various aspects from different cultures. Many parallels can be drawn between the Norse gods and Greek gods. If we begin with the premise that runic symbols came from the Germanic peoples of the Italian peninsula, and the Norse were Germanic peoples who traveled to Scandinavia, it is not far fetched to conclude that Norse gods and stories may have been influenced by the more ancient Greco-Roman mythologies. Both have a supreme ruler in Odin and Jupiter. These gods each have a mighty warrior son in Thor and Hercules. There are also deities for war, death, sun, moon, beauty, and so on. Both traditions also included the Fates: Parcae for the Romans, and Norn for the Norse. In their creation stories, both Odin and Jupiter overthrew the previous ruler, Ymir the Giant and Saturn respectively. Gods need their special place, be it Valhalla on Asgard or Mount Olympus (Greeks). When someone died, one’s trip to the afterlife was not a reflection of how one lived, but of how one died. Where these cultures differ may give us insight into the Christian influence over the eddas. Remember, the Prose and Poetic Eddas were written in the 13th century, after Scandinavia had adopted Christianity but still told the ancient stories. Runes from Jelling, Denmark, were raised in the 10th century by the king to mark the passing of his parents and adoption of Christianity in the region. A haloed Jesus stands with outstretched arms and body entangled in branches, combining the new god Jesus with the story of Odin hanging from the World Tree in search of runic wisdom. There are two runes that show Thor’s hammer, Mjölnir, instead of a cross, and other runes where a cross is made with four Mjölnirs extending from a common center, like a Germanic cross with Scandinavian symbols swirling about.

Parallel Plaid feels like a wool suiting, but it is a very affordable polyester and rayon blend. This would look great in a vintage pattern for a peplum jacket and knee-length skirt, or pleated slacks with a jacket. Go a little wild by wearing your plaid suiting with a blouse sewn from Parallel Zebra silk georgette print. The repeat is so large, you may even be tempted to make a long scarf that will trail down your back and flutter while you walk. In fact, if you wear shalwar kameez, the silk would be a fantastic dupatta to go over the tunic top sewn from Parallel Ash and leggings constructed from Parallel Graphite.

Saga Collection In today’s pop culture, you can’t escape the influence of Norse mythology. Marvel has made a killing with Thor and Loki in comics and movies, not only producing three movies dedicated to Thor, but also adding the gods of thunder and mischief to The Avengers. In interviews, JRR Tolkien sites many ways that Norse mythology influenced The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. He even referred to Gandalf as an “Odinic wanderer” promoting “justice, knowledge, truth, and insight.” Tolkien’s Icelandic nanny regaled him with tales of Norse gods, and he used these elements, as well as the Icelandic landscape, to influence his stories. In the Harry Potter series, JK Rowling created Dumbledore as an Odinic character, but she also incorporated the giants, elves, and other mythical creatures of Germanic and Scandinavian origin to create fantastic characters. Her goblins at Greengots Bank are similar to the dark elves that Loki enlisted to weave hair of gold for Sif. She even named an evil werewolf after the Norse mythological giant wolf, Fenrir. The 19th century German composer, Richard Wagner, drew inspiration from the Norse Volsunga
Saga. Over 26 years, he composed a four part epic music drama entitled Der Ring des Nibelungen (The Ring of Nibelung). The entire performance is staged over four nights, and includes the masterpiece Die Walküre (The Valkyrie) about Odin’s female helpers who choose which warriors will die in battle, and carry these brave warriors’ souls to Valhalla. If you are a Wagner lover, come to Chicago’s Lyric Opera this April to see their spectacular production (www.lyricopera.org). Did you know that our weekdays were originally named for Norse Gods? Sunday and Monday for the Sun’s day (Søndag) and Moon’s day (Mandag). Tuesday for Tyr, god of war, law and justice. Wednesday from the old Germanic spelling Woden, for Odin (Wōdnesdag). Thorsdag, named for the god of thunder. Friday belongs to Odin’s wife, Frigg (Fredag). Then came Lordag, otherwise known as bath day. Scandinavian hot and cold springs fed into outdoor baths for precise temperature adjustment, crucial for regular bathing. But the Catholic church renamed this day for Saturn, god of agriculture and the harvest. Bathing was not as big a priority for medieval Europeans.
We end the catalog with a taste of spring ahead. Bright jewel tone solids and bold rayon floral prints will have you dreaming of warmer days ahead. Begin with Saga Blue, a wonderful turquoise rayon jersey knit. Yes, this is from our Rayon Jersey Collection, so additional colors are available on our website. The turquoise knit really makes the blue pop in Saga Solarium, a floral kaleidoscope on rayon challis. Angela Wolf ’s Linda Tunic will look amazing in this! Look at all the colors - turquoise, lime, fuchsia, plum, royal, and hints of orange and white on a black ground. If you prefer wearing dark colors, we matched the plum in the flowers with Saga Aubergine, a soft, lightweight ponte double knit from our Sofie Collection. Additional colors of Sofie are available on our website.
