Spring 2020
Sow and Sew
Spring is a time of renewal and rejuvenation. As we head to the gardens to sow our seeds, we shall also head to our happy places and sew new garments to refresh our tired wardrobes. You’ll love our fresh designer cottons and silks, the linen blends, and all the fun novelty fabrics.
Elements Collection A garden requires patient labor and attention. Plants do not grow merely to satisfy ambitions or to fulfill good intentions. They thrive because someone expended effort on them. — Liberty Hyde Bailey
Great Copy Pattern #2680 “St. Croix Shirt” New pattern - info on p.15
Soil, water, sun, and air - these are the elements one needs to cultivate any type of garden. The right mixture, like any good science experiment, produces the desired outcome: healthy plants. But there is so much more to successfully growing vegetables and fruit with abundant harvests. Timing for one. Germination occurs best at different temperatures for all types of vegetables. Deciding to start seeds indoors or directly sow them outdoors is something scrutinized by home gardeners based on the weather, length of sunlight in their regions, and the amount they want to plant. Soil condition is another factor. Some plants need dry, sandy soil, others thrive in rich soil with lots of nitrogen. While we can amend our soil in our little home gardens by adding better drainage, or by enriching the soil with compost and maneur, farmers must grow what they feel will thrive in their land. Springtime here in the upper mid-west is a joyous time. As another long winter ends, gardens are planned and seeds are sown indoors and out, with the dream of a plentiful harvest to come. In this issue of Vogue Fabrics Catalog, we derive our collection names from the acts of cultivating a thriving vegetable & herb garden, and our theme paragraphs provide insight and inspiration to those of you who seek a greater rapport with the earth through successful growing.

Happy Spring, everyone! We are thrilled to present you with several combed cotton prints from designer Tori Richard, plus beautiful linens and linen blends, a couple of silks from Carolina Constas, and an array of prints and knits. Let’s dive right in with our first trio. The focus print is the first of four from Tori Richard, a designer of Hawaiian style camp shirts and resort wear. Elements Kona features pale lilac and sand leaves on a dark blue thatched background. Sew this heavenly print into a simple summer shirt and enjoy the feel of the cool combed cotton against your skin. The colors of the leaves are picked up in Elements Lilac and Elements Sand, a couple of fantastic rayon/ linen blends. The lilac is medium weight, making it a perfect choice for shorts, skirts, a summer jacket, or a loose dress. The sand blend is lighter weight, so wear it as a shell, or line it for loose-fitting draw-cord pants.

Sew two more Tori Richard cotton prints into summer shirts for him and her, then toss on shorts or slacks tailored from the linen, and you will be ready for a day at the track, the beach, or the boardwalk. Elements Maui features various tropical leaves in a cool dark blue, with faux batik design in cream and patina acting as an outline. The complex design of Elements O’ahu incorporates vertical and horizontal lines that act as a trellis for the lilac, cold ocean blue flowers, and the pale green vines. Both of these prints will easily pair with Elements Ice, a crisp linen in cool blue cross-woven with white.

Our last Tori Richard combed cotton print is Permies Kauai. The contrasting shades of coral, algae and blue are striking, and the softness of the fabric itself is delicious. Construct a camp shirt from the print to wear with either of the two solid coordinates in this collection. Permies Algae is a rayon-linen blend with a crisp hand that will relax and soften if you wash it at home. The hardest part about making something from this fabric will be choosing if you want it to be a crisply pleated summer pant that you will dry clean, or loose-fitting drawcord shorts that you can toss in the wash. Go ahead, make one of each!

We actually bought the two solids in this collection to go with our feature print, Permies Flamingo. Who wouldn’t want a summer top out of this? You can also line it for a vintage A-line dress, summer skirt, or a lightweight over-shirt. If your swatch didn’t give you any part of the flamingo, call us for a replacement swatch. The solid Permies Coral is tightly woven. Wear it as unlined slacks and enjoy the hint of built-in ease provided by the Lycra®.

Permies Collection A garden is a grand teacher. It teaches patience and careful watchfulness; it teaches industry and thrift; above all it teaches entire trust. — Gertrude Jekyll In the 1970s, a Tasmanian named Bill Mollison coined the term permaculture - shortened from permanent agriculture. In short, it is a sustainable way of living that allows nature to thrive the way it had for thousands of years, prior to humans isolating and stringently cultivating single crops or herds. For example, a forest is not comprised of straight rows of a single crop. Instead, we find a tall tree encapsulated by a winding vine, a second canopy of shrubs, and a layer of ground cover. The tree feeds deep in the earth, while each successive lower level feeds on nutrients closer to the surface, and each lower level requires less sunlight than the tree. Harmony. Permies, the enthusiastic people who follow this way of living, apply the permaculture theories to their lands and livestock. “Closed loop systems” sustain themselves: the farmer will grow food for the cows, then use the cow manure to feed the growth. Each item on the land should have “stacking functions.” If a gardener needs to build a fence to contain animals, the structure of the fence should also double as a trellis for climbing vegetation. Rather than installing a single function rain barrel to capture runoff from downspouts to later sprinkle on the garden, a pond should be created. The pond can also be used for growing aquatic plants and edible fish. Snails clean the pond, ducks eat the snails to keep the population from exploding, and the farmer can eat the duck eggs or the ducks. Ahead we will look at other parts of permaculture, like succession and companion planting.

Permies Houndstooth is a phenomenal textured cotton jacket fabric in off-white. Depending on how you style it, this fabric can be dressed up for a garden wedding or be worn more casually to an outdoor art fair. Caroline Constas designs a lifestyle brand geared towards the luxury jet-set crowd. Silk chiffon prints are featured in ruffled hi-low skirts, twist-front tops and wrap dresses. How will you be inspired by this New York fashion designer’s Permies Romance? Soft silk chiffon, with its swirling flowers in beautiful shades of sunrise, is begging to be worn, even if you just roll the hem for a scarf. Originally featured in a tiered mini dress that sold for $495 at high-end retailers, you can create a youthful, tiered top from the silk chiffon for a fraction of the ready-to-wear price. Imported from Italy, Permies Stripe linen and cotton blend yarnwoven novelty can be worn all summer long as loose, casual tops, beach cover-ups, full shorts, and cute dresses.

Here are perfect options for loose-fitting, casual summer garments and boho dresses. Start with Companion Shibori, a lightweight crinkled rayon, perfectly suited for all manner of breezy fashions. Look at the side-by-side images on the opposite page to see how unpredictable and organic the print appears. Sew a twist-front top with flutter sleeves to wear over drawcord shorts sewn from Companion Coral. The print on the face makes the colors of this linen look cross-woven. We like this for loose summer garments that will let your skin breathe on hot days.

Companion Collection Everything that slows us down and forces patience, everything that sets us back into the slow circles of nature, is a help. Gardening is an instrument of grace. — May Sarton Companion planting has two important purposes. Comingling plants can attract or deter insects, and they can aid each other in healthy growth. To the neophyte, all insects may seem the same. But there is a big difference between invasive pests that destroy crops, and beneficial insects that help pollinate crops or even eat the harmful pests. Companion planting is one way to deter the bad and encourage the good. Carrot flies are attracted to the scent of carrots. They lay their eggs in the ground and the resulting larva bore into and eat the growing carrots. But plant a border of chives and rosemary around the carrot patch and the flies will be literally thrown off scent. Planting nasturtium near zucchini and potatoes helps attract pollinators and deters Colorado potato beetles. Basil and tomatoes both
enjoy moist soil and hot, humid weather, and the basil wards off tomato hornworm, while its shallow root system won’t compete for nutrients with the tomatoes. For centuries, Iroquois, Aztec and other First Nations famously planted “The Three Sisters” - a circle of corn, pole beans, and squash. The corn in the center acts as the big sister, standing tall to watch over the smaller plants. The pole beans climb up the corn like a trellis and connect the stalks in a complex network of vines that secure the corn in the wind and prevent the stalks from falling over as the ears develop and get top-heavy. The little sister, the squash, is planted along the outside of this ingenious circle, creating a living mulch for retaining ground moisture, while protecting the other plants from the raccoons that avoid walking on the rough and prickly squash leaves. The root systems run to different depths, and they don’t compete for nutrients, plus the beans affix nitrogen to the soil, which feeds the hungry corn year after year.

While on the subject of companions, look at how beautifully these next two stretch cotton twills go together. Companion Lanes and Companion Millbrook feature the same coral color, one in an abstract geometric print and the other as the coordinating solid. Wear these together in an ensemble, like a jacket and dress, or sew them together in a color-blocked garment. If you prefer to wear something lighter for a top, choose Companion Bouquet for a peasant-style blouse or a wrap top.

LJ Designs “Seaside Tee”
The single greatest lesson the garden teaches is that our relationship to the planet need not be zero-sum, and that as long as the sun still shines and people still can plan and plant, think and do, we can, if we bother to try, find ways to provide for ourselves without diminishing the world. — Michael Pollan Succession planting has two meanings. In one respect, it is planting one crop when another is done growing. Additionally, it can refer to planting a single crop in successive weeks for a prolonged harvest. Some plants prefer colder weather, like lettuce and spinach. Here in Chicago, we can plant spinach beginning in mid-March, putting down new seeds every 10 days, until the tomatoes are put in the garden in June. We can plant more quick growing spinach after the tomatoes are done fruiting in late September. Zucchini is a great veg to plant successively. Rather than planting three in the ground at one time and being overwhelmed at harvest, plant a seed every 10 days to space out the maturity of the plants. This only works when growing from seed. Starter plants bought from a garden center were all seeded at the same time in a greenhouse and will mature at the same time as well. Corn is another good item to plant successively. Plant several seeds in a compact grid, and repeat this every week for three or four weeks, depending how long your growing season is. The grid pattern helps the stalks pollinate in the changing winds, and you’ll be able to eat corn picked fresh off the stalk for over a month. There are numerous blogs and YouTube videos for winter gardening in cold climates like ours, guiding us on cultivating fresh leafy greens and root vegetables throughout the snowy months with the aid of row covers, cold frames and greenhouses. Here in zone 5B we can plant cold hardy garlic in late September, harvest it the following mid-summer, and plant kale or lettuce in that spot until it’s time to plant more garlic.

Climate Collection There is no gardening without humility. Nature is constantly sending even its oldest scholars to the bottom of the class for some egregious blunder. — Alfred Austin This big, beautiful world of ours has an abundance of climates and micro-climates. Successful gardeners will know how, and what, to plant for their location. Summer in Chicago is a lot like Miami in winter - tropical humidity with temps in the 70s and 80s. The same types of produce will grow well in these two climates. But Miami summers call for plants that thrive in excessive heat, humidity and lots of quick rain showers. Eggplants, bell and chili peppers, cherry tomatoes, and sweet corn thrive in tropical conditions, as well as Asian plants like bok choi, suyo long (cucumber), and angled luffa (similar to zucchini). Growing vegetables in the desert has its own set of challenges with hot, dry summers, cold winter nights, and heavy clay soil. Waffle gardens, originally devised by the Pueblo, are fantastic for desert gardens. No, they’re not for growing waffles.... The clay soil is dug into rows of squares, and the clay that’s removed from the center of the squares is built up as a raised wall, so the land looks like a giant waffle. The sun bakes the rim until it hardens, while the centers are kept moist with a mulch of small gravel. Heat-loving companion plants fill the squares, so the tall shade the short, and the short help slow evaporation. Canadians have a much easier time growing vegetables like cauliflower, leafy greens and many root vegetables because those plants prefer cool soil. Try planting radish and parsnip seeds at the same time in the same place. The radish will be harvested before the parsnip need the space to grow. New Look #6163 Jacket, top and pants

Bright, bold colors abound in this next collection, beginning with Climate Botanic, a joyous floral stretch cotton sateen print from Télio & Cie. When we saw this, we immediately thought of a jacket and skirt ensemble to wear with a top of the following fabric, or a short sheath dress to wear for a night out with good friends. Climate Crimson is also a stretch cotton, but lighter weight than the sateen. It is woven tightly enough to wear as shorts, a skirt, and Capris pants while remaining light enough to be enjoyed as a shell or shirt. The crimson was imported from the Albini Group, an Italian manufacturer of high end cotton fabrics.

Don’t miss your chance to own Climate Elegance and create your own designer-inspired fashions.

We picked up several colors of this polyester reversible suiting, which we will dot throughout our upcoming catalogs. For now, Climate Cool in bright royal blue and Climate Heat in crimson red are perfect match mates for the colors in Climate Solarium, a floral rayon challis print. Structure any combination of garments in an ensemble, or color block the two solids in a single garment. The challis is ideal for wearing as a tunic, flowing skirt, wrap dress or even cool pajamas for summer!

We couldn’t help but offer a green and brown collection that reflects the budding spring trees. Espalier Bark stretch rayon linen blend is a beautifully rich brown that will act as a dark neutral in your wardrobe. Sew this into any garment that calls for a medium weight woven. We love it as a bottom-weight to pair with Espalier Ditzy lightweight stretch cotton floral print. The field of tiny flowers on brown background look almost abstract from a distance. Espalier Collection The glory of gardening: hands in the dirt, head in the sun, heart with nature. To nurture a garden is to feed not just on the body, but the soul. – Alfred Austin You may not be familiar with the term espalier, but you most likely have seen this type of planting. Think about a vineyard filled with rows of grapevines that have been carefully pruned, and trained to grow on a special trellis. This is espalier growing. It is not limited to grapes. There are many fruiting trees, like apples, pears, peaches, and pomegranates, that thrive with this technique. And there are several ways to create an espalier trellis, including horizontal training of branches, as well as V-shaped training which makes the branches look like a flat candelabra. Many people choose espalier when they are short on space, or wish to
plant alongside a house, barn, or fence. It’s easier to control the height as well, making fruits easier to reach. The aggressive pruning allows for better airflow, and for light to shine right where it is needed. When an apple tree is left to grow to its full potential in a back yard, it can become too dense with branches, hindering airflow and light permeation, plus the branches can rub against each other creating open sores that get infected. Espalier pruned trees have less fruit production since there are fewer branches, but more energy is directed into the remaining branches to produce an incredibly rich harvest. Not all fruit trees are created equal for espalier growing. Look for shorter fruit trees with softer branches that will bend without snapping when being affixed to the trellis. p. 29
When Télio & Cie came to our warehouse with their new knits, we picked up these ribbed and smooth coordinates in two colorways - heathered red and a heathered peri-blue (VF202-46 & -47). Herbal Ribbed and Herbal Smooth sweater knits are soft and lightweight without being sheer. Stitch up a sweater set with the ribbed as the sweater and the smooth as the top, or construct a top incorporating these as contrasting textures. We thought you might like a lightweight stretch suiting to wear as slacks or a skirt with the knits, so we also ordered their Astaire Stretch Suiting in black, which we are calling Herbal Suiting. It is tightly woven, has a little stretch, and sews up beautifully into all types of fashion apparel separates.

Herbal Collection All gardeners know better than other gardeners. — Chinese proverb There’s nothing better than nipping out to the garden for a fresh cutting of basil to make pesto, oregano for Greek chicken, cilantro for guacamole, or rosemary to marinate lamb. Herbs are the easiest garden gems to grow in pots on a patio or in a windowsill, so even the most amateur among us can enjoy savory meals with little effort. The key is knowing what and how to cluster. For example, Mediterranean herbs thrive in poor soil with good drainage. Take a wide, deep pot, layer the bottom with gravel or lava rock to promote good drainage, then fill with a mixture of peat free compost and grit, like coarse sand or pea gravel. Plant your pot with a mix of Rosemary, marjoram, sage, savory, oregano and thyme. The more you cut them, the better the plants will grow. If you’ve
shopped for dried herbs in the grocery store lately, you’ll have noticed the price is over $6 per bottle. One happy basil plant from your garden will fill a spice jar twice if you are strictly growing to dry it and not eat it fresh. To dry most herbs, cut the stems back to about 2” from their base, tie each bunch with a string and leave to hang upside down in a dark, dry room for a few weeks. Label the plants when you hang them since many of these will look the same when they have dried. Crunch the dried leaves into a bowl, and funnel the flakes into an empty spice jar. You’ll notice the color will be greener than your store-bought equivalent, and the smell and taste will be more aromatic. Some herbs are better when they are dried flat on a screen, like chamomile for herbal tea, while others retain more flavor if frozen in an ice cube tray with a little water, like parsley, cilantro, and chive.

Reds are hard to match, but we worked diligently to find a perfect solid for you to wear with the following stripe. Herbal Crimson is a rayon made from bamboo pulp, generally referred to as bamboo knit. Bamboo grows very quickly. Some species can grow a yard a day, making it more ecofriendly and sustainable to use bamboo pulp in fabric manufacturing than regular tree pulp. The resulting fabrics are incredibly soft to the touch and cool when worn. Ruche a knit top from the crimson to wear with Capris pants sewn from Herbal Stripe, a stretch cotton sateen in beige, black and crimson. Yes, you can also make a matching jacket for a completely beachworthy look! Our Herbal Night stretch cotton twill in rich black is another midweight option you can sew into shorts, pants or tops. Its weight is similar enough to the stripe that you can color block it into a dress or use it as a contrast collar on a striped jacket.

Themed Collection A society grows great when old men plant trees whose shade they know they shall never sit in. — Greek proverb If you aren’t a fan of structured gardens, or you don’t have room to plant many rows, consider a clustered themed garden. Think about the meals you like to cook, then grow a small patch interplanting the herbs, spices, and vegetables you use just for those dishes. By interplanting, you are not creating long rows with even spacing like a conventional garden, but plopping plants together in a compact area to grow in harmony. You can even do this in a few containers on a patio. For example, if Mexican flavors dominate the dinner table, grow several cilantro, a couple of tomatoes, prolific oregano, and two each of jalepeño, cayenne, and poblano. For an Italian garden, plant your herbs with zucchini, tomatoes, onion, and garlic. British themed plots can be packed with potatoes, carrots, leeks, chives, and sage. When it’s time to cook, the meal is right there, waiting for you. Tucker Taylor of Kendall-Jackson winery in California developed culinary sensory gardens with a dual purpose. One goal is to aid guests who visit the estate in Santa Rosa get a sense of the flavors that will appear in each wine. In the pinot noir garden, they grow cherries, blueberries, raspberries, and violets - all flavors one tastes in a full-bodied pinot noir. Another goal is to inspire the food and wine pairings for the estate chefs. If a meal will be served with chardonnay, the chefs can take cuttings from the herbs clustered in the white wine sensory garden.
