Fall 2020
“O’zapft is”
This phrase launches the start of Munich’s Oktoberfest - “It’s Tapped.” Let’s enjoy a little escapism and dive into our Fall 2020 catalog, full of soft knits, colorful prints, and easy care options to enjoy while staying home. Grab a lager and some sausage, and flip through the catalog planning your fall wardrobe.
Oktoberfest Collection After the past several months of anguish, illness and anxiety, we hope you will indulge us with a little escapism. Come with us to celebrate Oktoberfest. We all know it is a celebration of food, drink and dance, but why? What are its origins? And why is it in September??? All good questions. The world’s largest Oktoberfest celebration is held in its origin-city of Munich, Germany over a two-week period ending the first Sunday in October. According to Vistawide.com, over 6 million people consume 1.5 million gallons of beer, 200,000 links of pork sausage, and 480,000 spit-roasted chickens. People from all over the world descend on the Oktoberfest field spending over 450 million Euros. It’s no wonder so many cities and German restaurants around the world now host their own Oktoberfest celebrations each year. They want to capture some of the fun-loving party atmosphere, and give people a lively destination for good food and drink. The world’s largest Oktoberfest outside of Germany is held in Kitchener-Waterloo in Canada, which isn’t surprising given their very large German heritage. In the states, OktoberfestZinZinnati in Ohio brings in half a million visitors each year. This year, treat yourself to a fun time by whipping up some weisswurst, grabbing a Lowenbräu, asking Alexa to play “Skandal im Sperrbezirk” and enjoy the start of autumn. We even have a pattern from Folkwear for a dirndl if you want to roleplay the part of a barmaid.

We may be heading into autumn, but many of you will experience warm temperatures throughout the next couple months. We proudly present Oktoberfest Suiting, a dark mallard rayon/linen suiting. The color can be worn all year long, and the weight and drape make this a perfect choice for languid jackets, slacks with some flow, a wrap dress or a sheath dress. It is also a wonderful backdrop for our wild cubist print. Oktoberfest Cubes is a product of Achille Pinto, a prominent Italian textile mill. Jewel-tone cubes, oriented lengthwise down the center of the fabric, are flanked by wide stripes of mallard and dark burgundy along both selvages. The full width of the fabric is 58”, the center section with the cubes is 36” wide, and the borders are each 6” wide. Have fun creating a piecework kimono jacket or tunic to showcase the cubes and stripes. If creating a man’s shirt, use the stripes as the front placket, cuffs and collar. Feel the swatch - the fabric is a brilliant cross between a lightweight twill and a peachskin.

Our Spring 2020 catalog featured several wonderful Japanese cotton prints made for fashion designer Tori Richard. We saved this darker print for our Fall catalog. Dark navy cotton shirting is the base for a mallard and royal grid design with accents of burnt umber triangles. Showcase Oktoberfest Grid as a boat neck top, a button-down shirt, or a loose tunic. Who doesn’t love a great ponti knit? Oktoberfest Ponti, a mallard colored double knit, is a perfect color match for this collection, the weight is ideal for cool-weather separates, and the hand is so soft and delicious you will want to wear it every day in numerous wardrobe options. When you make your slacks and sweater-jacket from the ponti, you definitely will need a wellmatched blouse to pull the ensemble together, and we found that in Oktoberfest Meadow. This lightweight rayon not only sports a vivid floral print in mallard with teal and olive, it also has an underlying texture, giving it additional visual interest. Choose a style of blouse that has drape and let the fabric flutter.

Celebration Collection
Silhouette Patterns #450 “Nancy’s Blouse”
October 12, 1810, Bavarian Crown Prince Ludwig married Princess Therese of Saxe-Hildburghausen. Everyone in Munich was invited to a five-day celebration in the vast field outside the city gates. In honor of the bride, the field was renamed Theresienwiese, meaning “Theresa’s Meadow” (shortened colloquially to d’Wiesn). Princess Therese had been on the short list of royalty to marry Napoleon, so it was a triumph for the Crown Prince that she married Ludwig, because he strongly opposed Napoleon and won her over to be his bride. The main event of the wedding celebrations was a Scharlachrennen - scarlet running. This medieval horse race of 30 royal and noble participants was cheered on by 40,000 spectators perched on the hillside. The top prize in such races traditionally was a length of valuable scarlet wool nearly 100 feet long, but in this instance it was a gold medal. Competition was fierce over the two-mile long course. The race was so popular, it was held yearly for over a century. Weekend festivities included performances by children in costumes, plus merchants selling wine, beer and food. Due to its popularity and success, the celebration became an annual tradition, even after the abdication of then King Ludwig in 1848. Considered the world’s largest volksfest, the Munich Oktoberfest has been canceled 26 times in the past due to war and cholera, and again this year due to the corona virus pandemic, but dates are already posted for 2021.

If Celebration Motif looks familiar, we featured it in teal in the Winter 2018 catalog. Lightweight with a good drape, this wash-and-wear easy-care fabric is ready to be added to your wardrobe. We received several exceptional suiting fabrics from a supplier in New York, which we sprinkled throughout the catalog. The first is Celebration Blush. Tailor a sharp sheath and jacket and accent the ensemble with a scarf made from any of the prints in this collection. You can also sew a straight skirt from the blush and top it with any of the prints as a fluid blouse. The stretch running lengthwise is just slightly more than the stretch across the grain, so really, you can cut your pattern either along the grain or across the grain, depending purely on your preference. This delicious peachskin print has a subtle crepe texture and dramatic print in a subdued color scheme. We envision Celebration Delight being made into an extra long tunic that flows and flutters, worn over the blush sewn as Hollywood pants.

This delightful rayon challis floral print has a fluid hand and is very soft to the touch. Honestly, if you are staying close to home for a while, sew some loose pajamas to wear around the house. Bavaria Collection Located as a landlocked state in the southeast of Germany, the Free State of Bavaria has a rich history influenced by Celtic ancestry, bohemian travelers, and Alpine symbolism. Occupying 1/5 of Germany, this mostly Catholic region is centrally located within western Europe. There is a very proud tradition of beer brewing and consumption among Bavarians. In 1516 a purity order was passed called the Reinheitsgebot, which demanded that the only ingredients allowed in brewing Bavarian beer were water, barley and hops. It doesn’t mention yeast, but yeast was used and passed from one batch to the next. Anyone in violation of the Reinheitsgebot had their batch confiscated as a penalty. This law also set the price for beer, limiting profits for innkeepers. By restricting the main ingredients to barley and hops, it ensured that bakers would have enough wheat and rye to feed people. These laws remained mostly intact until a vote in 2015 that relaxed ingredient restrictions, allowing brewers to become more competitive in the world market by adding some flavors. Bavarian households ate nice cuts of meat exclusively on Sundays, so the rest of the week the meals were filled with hearty root vegetables that grow well in cold climates, wursts (sausages) made from bits of pork and veal, flour based dishes called knödel that are like a matzoh ball dumplings, and the ever popular Dampfnudel - a steamed flour dumpling stuffed with a savory or a sweet filling.

Do you have a favorite slacks pattern? How about a casual jacket pattern? How about an embroidery machine??? Go get ‘em, because Bavaria Drab is ready to become a perennial wardrobe favorite for you. Durable like a denim, but much softer and lighter, this duffle fabric will get softer the more you wash it. Sew up your garments and embroider a tote bag to tie everything together. Bavaria Intrigue peachskin print lends an air of sophistication to the preceding cotton. Drab olive, Victorian lilac, dark navy, and pale peach are tossed on an off-white background. The base fabric is a lightweight twill, so it is substantial enough to be sewn into a dress, and light enough to be worn as a top. If you enjoy wearing winter white, you will appreciate this stretch cotton sateen we call Bavaria Foam. Tailor any number of casual suiting separates to sprinkle into your wardrobe. This fabric will take embroidery very well.

Our next two entries are the same fabric in drab olive and soft black. The names come from “first” and “second” in German: Bavaria Zuerst and Bavaria Zweite. These viscose (rayon) blends feature a pseudo-seersucker texture and will look great color-blocked into a loose top or wrap dress. If you want to add a little warmth to your wardrobe, Bavaria Wolle is a drab olive polyester and wool blend twill suiting. It is so soft and won’t require any lining. Perfect for suiting separates, make sure you buy enough to make several pieces. Cutting Line Design #31307 “One Seam Pants”

Fairgrounds Collection Theresienwiese is a vast expanse encompassing about 4.5 million square feet (roughly 60 soccer pitches) of land in Munich. Today the fairgrounds are used for Oktoberfest, a month long Winter Tollwood festival, Christkindlmarkt, and a giant flea market in April, to name a few of the larger events. A main thoroughfare called the Bavariaring defines the outer boundary of the modern wiesn. The area within the Bavariaring has been developed with a grid of roads outlining areas for the tents and tables in what used to be the large meadow. Local trains ferry visitors from around Munich to revel in the open air marketplace and beer tents of Oktoberfest. Since Oktoberfest is canceled this year and international visitors are asked to stay away, the land has been transformed into an outdoor sporting event space for locals. Areas have been created for skateboarding, rock wall climbing, plus basketball, tennis, trampolines and mountain biking. In the two centuries of Oktoberfest, it has been closed down by war and cholera, and now COVID. In 1980, a right-wing neo-nazi nationalist set off an improvised explosive devise in a trash bin near the main entrance at the start of Oktoberfest. This IED killed 12, including the terrorist, and injured over 200 others. The police made quick work of surveying, documenting and cleaning the area, and Oktoberfest reopened twelve hours later. Erich Kiesl, the mayor of Munich at the time, proclaimed, “Neither this State, nor this city or its citizens will be held to ransom by criminals. A closure would only support the condemnable intention of the perpetrator. For this reason we must say: life must go on.”

Angela Wolf #1123 “The Ruched-T”
You’ll need a bottom-weight fabric to wear with the novelty print, so we proffer Fairgrounds Ponti. This stable knit in heathered grey is ideal for constructing knit slacks and cardigan. The 25% rayon provides the soft hand. We know you love these flecked sweater knits, and we were thrilled to find one in a pale grey with a hint of pink to fit well into this collection. This soft, rayon-rich knit we call Fairgrounds Heather will look great as a cowl neck top worn with our following French Denim. Fairgrounds Denim surprised us. Its light weight and soft hand are similar to a heavier shirting, but this is a twill weave and classified as a French Denim. You can embroider it, paint it, trim it, or just sew it into slacks, a jacket, a skirt and even a button-down shirt. We’ve had fun offering you camouflage fabrics, and this pumice-pink cotton blend knit is surely going to please many of you. Fairgrounds Camo has plenty of crosswise stretch to be worn as a body-con top, and it is light enough to be worn as a yoga skirt. Angela Wolf #4200 “The Angel Bootcut Jean”

Take a moment to fondle this next swatch. Really. Brauhaus Meadow’s incredibly soft hand, great stretch, and light weight, will inspire you to make a top for sure, but secretly you will be sewing pajamas and wearing them. All. The. Time. There will come a time you need to venture outside and you will once again be able to socialize like it was 2019. Be ready with a jacket tailored from Brauhaus Shimmer. This looks like cotton denim, but it is really a suit-weight linen with subtle metallic threads woven throughout. One side has a bit more shimmer than the other, and you can choose which side you want to feature as the focus. FitNice Systems “Master Pants”

Brauhaus Collection If you are going to host the world’s largest beerfest, you owe it to yourself and your attendees to have a spectacle of an opening. Oktoberfest delivers on that score. A giant parade of restaurant owners riding in carriages leads a procession of revelers from downtown Munich to Theresenweise, arriving at noon for the tapping of the first barrel of beer by the Lord Mayor at the Schottenhammel tent. “O’zapft is!” is decried by the mayor - “It’s tapped!” - and twelve gunshots ring out from the adjacent Bavaria Statue, alerting the other tents Oktoberfest is declared open and start pouring! Fourteen large beer tents plus several smaller beer tents are scattered throughout the fairgrounds, but they are only operated by six companies, including Lowenbräu, that brew the festival Märzenbier (dark lager) and Festbier (pale lager) within the Munich city limits. All these brewers follow the strict Reinheitsgebot regulations, and proudly display the registered trademark for special Oktoberfest Beer by the Club of Munich Brewers. The original Märzen was lagered for 30 days in March, then allowed to age until its consumption in autumn. Now it is brewed all year long and refrigerated. Each tent is operated like an open sided brauhäus - brew house or German pub - accommodating over 98,000 revelers at a time. Traditional one liter mugs of brew are served by barmaids wearing traditional dirndls carrying up to ten mugs at one time! The largest beer tent on the grounds - in the world actually is the Hofbräu-Festzelt. Accommodating up to 1000 visitors at a time, the tent is decked out with enormous wreaths and trees made from regional hops vines, suspended above the crowds. According to the official Oktoberfest website, there is another important figure suspended from the roof of the Hofbräu-Festzelt: “Angel Aloisius in the Hofbräuhaus is deep in his cups, instead of fulfilling his mission to deliver divine advice to the Bavarian state government.” It has long been tradition that as women get too hot from drinking, they discard their bras by tossing them at the Angel Aloisius, who has to be freed from several dangling undergarments.

What would a beerfest be without incredible local food? Don’t look for salads, pasta and sushi here. Coveted certificates of authenticity from the Bavarian Ministry of Agriculture and the Hotel and Restaurant Association have been awarded to Wiesn landlords who prepare cuisine that is sourced regionally and is true to traditional Bavarian recipes. Oktoberfest is filled with Bavarian classics like large bretzles (pretzels), knodels, and weisswurst, a white sausage made primarily from veal. If you are hungry for something more familiar, try the würstl, which is basically a frankfurter. For the pescatarians in the crowd, find the tents with the steckerlfisch - grilled fish on a stick. A long stick is rammed from mouth to tail of a gutted, marinated fish, then several fish are lined up on the grill with the sticks hanging off the edges so the chef can turn them. The fish might be whitefish, trout, mackerel or another local variety. When you are ready for dessert, grab some stollen which is a yeasted cake with dried fruit and nuts, like what we see at Christmastime. The historically oldest traditional food served is Küchle, a type of doughnut that dates back to the 14th century abbey bakeries. The most important ingredient of these doughy treats is clarified butter which is used instead of oil for frying. It’s a good thing people have to walk a lot at the Munich Oktoberfest, because the festival food and beer really pack on the pounds.

Cuisine Bouclé is a show-stopper! The beautiful chocolate brown and soft black curly texture of the face is contrasted by the soft, flat, striped reverse. Continuing with the chocolate theme is this lovely textured cotton shirting we named Cuisine Chevron. Play around with the design and cut some parts of your sewing pattern on the bias or cross-grain.

We love the hand of this grey rayon blend suiting. Cuisine Ash is a handsome choice for office attire, and it has enough drape to be worn as wide legged pants with a drawstring for when you want to dine al fresco on a warm autumn evening. Wear a shirt sewn from Cuisine Paisley with pants sewn from the ashen suiting. The greys blend together and the brown of the print pops. This is a fantastic color combination and easy to wear regardless of age or gender. For good measure, we are offering you a brown suiting, just in case you wanted something a little more substantial for a jacket. Cuisine Chocolate is a double-woven worsted suiting. If you are telecommuting this year, sew a jumper to wear over your new paisley top to feel professional from home and look good Zooming. Admit it....you can’t put this swatch down. Oh, the heavenly softness! And it’s cotton!!! You will want to make a pullover, cardigan, robe, pajama style pants, blanket, shrug, hat, and embroider a cute coat for Fido. Procession Collection Oktoberfest kicks off on a Saturday in mid-September with a joyous parade of Wiesn landlords and brewers. Starting at the city center and winding just over four miles to the Theresienwiese, the parade is a highly anticipated event. A young girl whose family has been in Munich at least three generations is selected to be the city’s mascot called the Münchner Kindl. She leads the procession on horseback, followed by the Lord Mayor in a decorated horse-drawn carriage and then by several carriages of Wiesn landlords and brewery carts pulled by draft horses. A Wiesn landlord is someone who owns a license for a spot on the Theresienwiese for Oktoberfest, and many such landlords have held their spots for generations. It takes forty-five minutes for the Münchner Kindl to lead the procession to the fairgrounds, but a spectator will sit for over two and a half hours watching all the participants ride by. The next day starts with the costume and hunters’ parade. Over 9,000 participants from hunting clubs, bands, traditional costume clubs, and international musicians form 60 groups that perform and wave and lift spectators’ spirits while leading them to the Bavariaring.

Here’s the second entry for the suiting fabrics from a favorite New York supplier (#07, #44 & #46 are the others in this catalog). Procession Nacht is an all-purpose black fabric that can be dressed up or down with a change of accessories and shoes. If you create a dress, jacket, slacks, and skirt you will have four solid wardrobe basics that can be worn for any occasion. Let your animal loose! Procession Wild is an ITY knit with wildcat spots and metallic gold shimmer.
The shimmer is NOT topical, so fairy dust will NOT be left behind when you wear it. Cut and sew this at the same time with the same pattern you use for the matte jersey and make two great new garments with minimal effort. Rounding out our collection is Procession Crepe. This warm beige poly-rayon blend has a hint of stretch both ways for built-in ease. The weight of this double-woven crepe makes it a great choice for casual separates.

Costume Collection The most popular garments worn at Munich’s Oktoberfest are dirndls and lederhosen. The traditional dirndl dates back to the Renaissance for the Alps region of Switzerland, Austria and southern Germany. The dress, which is constructed by attaching a sleeveless, tight fitting bodice to a skirt, is worn over a short blouse, and the outfit is pulled together with an apron tied at the waist. The apron is very important. It is bad fashion if it does not end at the same hem length as the dress, it must be of a contrasting color to really “pop”, and the bow is a visual indicator as to the relationship status of the woman. A bow on the left means she is single, and a bow on the right means she is in a long-term relationship or married. For cold nights, have a Tyrolean jacket handy, preferably made from wool felt and lightly embroidered for good measure. Tyrolean jackets for men are slim fitting and cut below the hip with one or two rows of closely spaced buttons and either a notched lapel or a stand collar. For women, the jackets are tapered in the bodice and cut to rest at the top of the dirndl skirt. Tyrol is an Alpine territory located between Bavaria and Italy, boasting Innsbruck as it’s provincial capital. The majority of Tyroleans speak German despite most of the area being an autonomous region in Northern Italy since World War II. We would be remiss if we did not give a mention to Lederhosen, the most popular Oktoberfest fashion for men, and an important historic costume for Bavarians. According to the official Oktoberfest website, these knee-length deerskin pants with suspenders, “...protect you from the elements, keep you warm in cold weather, and cool on sunny days. They also adapt particularly well to liquids such as rain or beer. So they are functional after all.” With tight fitting leather pants, there isn’t room for much else underneath, thus custom dictates men go commando. No Lederhosen is complete without a charivari, a thick silver chain worn around the waist. Hunters attached trinkets to the charivari, such as “coins, gems, badger fur, paws and even teeth,” and wore these like a talisman. These little “trophies” were added after successful hunts, and charivaris were passed down within families. The more items, the higher one’s stature.
