Gaia Collection Created over 50 years ago, Earth Day has become a celebrated ritual of springtime, popping onto our calendars on April 22. As weather patterns become more turbulent and extreme, we can’t help but think “Mother Nature isn’t very happy with us right now.” Countries strive to reduce carbon emissions, harness renewable energy, and conserve natural resources in an attempt to slow the tide of climate change and extinction. If you say, “One person can’t do much to change things,” you may be shocked to find out how big of a difference you can make, especially if you share your newfound wisdom with others, like family, friends, and neighbors. In this issue, our collection names are inspired by Earth Day and saving Mother Nature. Try our simple and thoughtful tips to help reduce your overall carbon footprint. Hopefully, you will feel empowered to make these positive changes, and enjoy feeling that you are doing something important to contribute to the healing of the world we leave to our grandchildren.

FitNice Systems “Lady Legs” (VF212-02)
Liesl & Co #o37FB “Fitzroy Blouse” (VF212-04)
Let’s kick off this Spring Catalog with a textured knit that can be worn all year long. The black rectangles of Gaia Blocks really make the raised coral outlines pop visually. This knit is stable enough to be worn as a structured dress or cardigan, and light enough to enjoy as a short sleeve top during the summer. To enhance the coral, pair it with Gaia Ponte, a lightweight double knit from our Sofie collection. The softness of this piece feels incredible against the skin, and the weight is ideal for knit-tops and yoga pants. Why not make a knit sheath dress from the solid and a jacket from Gaia Blocks for a stunning ensemble.

Liesl & Co #o33BD “Belgravia Dress”
There are two Liverpool Crepe Knit floral prints in this first collection, and they couldn’t be more different in their character. First up is Gaia Garden (page 3), filled with flowers of various sizes, colors and styles. The second is Gaia Dynamic, a bold stylized print in stunning, bright colors. Choose these wonderfully textured stable knits for casual separates requiring a medium weight knit. Imagine wearing a knit wrap top from Gaia Garden or a striking dress from Gaia Dynamic. Both of these prints can be worn with the coral ponte (page 2), as well as Gaia Challis (page 3) and Gaia Mellow. The challis is from our basic collection, so we have many other colors in stock which you can view online, or you can order a swatch card of all the colors for $5. The challis is so soft to the touch and has a beautiful drape. Gaia Mellow is an extra wide cotton jersey knit, suitable for sewing t-shirts, tanks and yoga skirts.

Infusing a little depth into this collection, Gaia Drab brings a classic army dufflegreen to a comfortable stretch-woven cotton broadcloth. Choose this for sewing your shorts, skirts, Capris, slacks, spring jackets, and matching tote bags. The color is a perfect companion for Gaia Meadow crinkled rayon floral print. The flowers bloom in shades of coral and pink, accented by various hues of the drab green. We love this print for sewing a tunic, a wrap top, or a peasant blouse for a Boho look. Another pantweight option to consider as a match for the florals in this collection is Gaia Reversible. This poly/cotton/ Lycra® blend stretch-twill features pink on one side and coral on the other. Cuff your slacks, color block an Oxford-style shirt, or create a dress with self-contrasting bands. With 30% crossgrain stretch, you can sew your garment a little more form fitting and benefit from its built-in ease.

The next two fabrics brought a lot of excitement to our offices. First, we present Abode Orchids. This linen print is a stunning choice for a sheath dress, three-quarter length jacket, or summer slacks and shell. If you like to pair solids with prints, sew a knit jacket from Abode Doubletake. This unique cotton-rich ponte di Roma piqué knit is made in Italy. We love it so much, we are featuring it in black at the end of this catalog. The texture is subtle, so it won’t compete with the prints of the linen or the following polyester peachskin. Abode Abstract playfully combines the colors of the other prints into a zigzag, streaked, and dotted cloth that can be worn as a blouse, dress, or skirt.

Abode Collection Having spent a great deal of time at home this year, we paid the price with increased electric, gas and water bills. So how do we make improvements that will save money and reduce usage? Let’s take a look at water. About 90% of the energy used by your washing machine is for heating the water, according to the Cleaning Institute. Additionally, the experts at the Weather Channel say, “Using cold water to wash your hands and clothes helps reduce energy consumption.” Weather permitting, drying clothes outside on a clothesline will save energy over using your dryer. Don’t run the water when you brush your teeth...really, what’s the point of leaving it running? Two minutes brushing your teeth can waste up to four gallons of water. If you have a dishwasher, don’t pre-wash in the sink. If you don’t have a dishwasher, fill the sink part way with water and soak the plates and utencils before washing, rather than running the water the entire time. There is an entire movement behind bidets (sorry, couldn’t resist some potty humor). Manufacturers realize Americans aren’t going to reconfigure their bathrooms to include these European tushy cleaning staples, so they have created ways to adapt your toilet to spray your behind with water, then air dry it. This will reduce your toilet paper use and is supposed to be more hygenic than wiping with paper. A bidet uses 1/8 gallon of water, where it takes 37 gallons of water to create a roll of toilet paper. By switching to a bidet, Business Insider claims you will save 75% on your toilet paper purchases and reduce the amount of trees cut down to make toilet paper (384 trees per person in a lifetime).

From the same supplier as the burgundy puffer that opened our Early Spring catalog comes Abode Puffer, a white quilted double-knit with wonderful geometric designs. Choose a simple spring jacket pattern to showcase this fabric, and it will look like you did all the intricate quilting yourself. Wear the jacket over a flowing dress sewn from Abode Pool, a mellow blue we took from our basic stock Liverpool Crepe Knit fabrics which we carry in several colors. This knit would make a lovely sweater to wear over a blouse whipped up from Abode Meadow rayon challis print on the following page. Ivory flowers are accented by pale blue leaves and dots of orange on a navy background. A simple sarong will do very nicely for this lovely challis.

Dana Marie #1053 “All the Right Angles”
Heirloom Collection Rev up those sewing machines and get ready to go back in history a little. There are clever ways to replace paper products with fabric. Deforestation not only hampers the earth’s ability to filter its air, it also displaces animals. If you take a couple yards of linen, cotton or silk, and sew handkerchiefs to use instead of paper tissues, you will be saving trees and animals. Think of how many boxes of tissues a couple of cloth hankies will replace? You can toss them in the wash with your towels. During times of illness it’s good to have many handkerchiefs around in a basket to reduce reusing germy hankies. Cloth napkins are a practical and elegant way to replace paper. Historically, families would use the same napkin during several meals, instead of washing after just one meal. Napkin rings were individualized to work as identifiers for each person’s napkin. The “napkin rings” could be as simple as different colored ribbons. Create napkins to match your table linens. Embroider the edges, or use a wing needle (hemstitch needle) to add decoration. Banquet halls use polyester poplin for their tablecloths and napkins, and we do carry an abundance of colors at a very low price. When you go shopping, make sure to arm yourself with plenty of fabric bags to use for groceries and shopping to avoid bringing home more plastic bags. These are easy to stitch up from poplin, twill, or netting for veggies. Moving now to your closets, did you know that people toss out roughly 80 pounds of clothing each year, most of which ends up in landfills? If the clothes are in good shape, donate them for resale. As sewists, we tend to make things we will wear for years, as opposed to whipping up something trendy that will last a season before we think it looks passé. When sewing for children, make things too big, and insert ties or buttonhole elastic to size-down the garments, letting the length and girth out as the kids grow. You can make their garments last a year instead of a season this way.

Blue and gold are a classic and regal combination. Here we offer navy and indigo coupled with turmeric, antique gold, and pale mango. Dive first into the bubble crepe georgette print we call Heirloom Jardín (page 15). Flowers in white , brown, and a bold turmeric color pop against a dark navy ground and are accented by leaves of olive, straw and electric blue. This fabric is light and breezy, so choose a pattern that calls for a light to medium weight woven with drape. We think it looks very smart when paired with Heirloom Turmeric (page 15), a linen and rayon blend similar to so many other fabrics we have featured in past Spring and Summer catalogs. Whip up drawstring pants to wear to the beach or pool, tailor a summer dress for when you want to enjoy dining al fresco in style. Dry cleaning will preserve the fibers and texture, while washing it will soften it for a more casual look. We’d like to introduce a blend that is new to us from one of our favorite linen suppliers. Heirloom Indigo is a 200GSM linen weave that combines polyester, cotton and linen to create a deliciously soft cloth. This will be handsome as a man’s shirt, and practical for a dress or casual slacks. We chose it specifically to be worn with Heirloom Bohemian, a novelty printed cotton lawn. This fabric will keep you cool through the summer. Leave it plain for a peasant style blouse, or add a little beadwork for a fancy tunic.

What makes one food more sustainable or eco-friendly than another? There are several factors in this assessment, including the distance it travelled to reach your marketplace, the fuel used to farm the land, the plastic containers for pre-packed berries and fruits, the methane released by livestock, etc. Buying locally sourced produce, dairy and meat will cut back on CO2 emissions compared to food that has to be flown in from across the country or imported. Try to buy from a farmer’s market, or stores that specialize on local and seasonal farm-to-table meats and produce. A generation ago, we wouldn’t see fresh berries in the winter in Chicago, but now the grocery store chains carry them year ‘round. Columbia University encourages people to “Eat low on the food chain.” Fruits, grains, and vegetables are much lower on the greenhouse gas emissions list than livestock. Beef and sheep use valuable natural resources to graze and drink, and they belch out a tremendous amount of methane. Columbia contests that “every day you forgo meat and dairy, you can reduce your carbon footprint.” Americans are horrible when it comes to wasting food. Too much of what we buy winds up in the trash. You can cut this back a couple ways. Plan your meals for the week, using several of the same ingredients so you are less likely to throw away that unused half bunch of parsley or the four extra carrots in the bag. Or if you have those extras, freeze them for future use. If you garden, you can compost raw veggies, fruits, teas, egg shells, used coffee grounds and more, which will enrich your earth and spare the landfills.

Folwear Patterns #210 “Armistice Blouse”
While the lilacs are beginning to burst outside, you can be inside sewing up several purple-hued garments to wear now through early autumn. Begin on page 18 with Sustenance Blooms, a stylized purple floral on black polyester peachskin. When your sewing pattern calls for a light to medium weight woven with drape, this is a beautiful option. A perennial favorite is seersucker, and we pulled this purple piece from our Classic Seersucker collection which you can see online. Sustenance Pucker is a polyester and cotton blend, machine washable, and ready to be sewn into classic summer shorts and shirts.
We were delighted by Sustenance Surprise. At first glance, it looks like an embroidered eyelet. Upon closer inspection, it is a cotton print with laser cut mockeyelets. Surprise! It’s also half the price of our regular imported cotton eyelets. You can underline it with Sustenance Snow, another of our basic Rayon Challis collection. If you sew a top with these two fabrics, add depth of color to your ensemble by knocking up casual slacks or Capris styled from Sustenance Mellow. This cotton and linen blend plum pinstripe is ready to be tailored into a summer dress for returning to the office, or casual separates to wear around town. Dana Marie #1024 “Safari” - Walking shorts

Sew this tightly woven broadcloth as a button-down shirt, a golf skirt, walking shorts, or a princess seamed shell to wear with Sustenance Shirting. Feel your swatch. The softness of this rayon jersey knit print is delightful enough to make you want to wear it. The print brings an added layer of fun. Look at our image of Reduction Askew and notice that the horizontal design is really on a slight diagonal, hence the name. Play around with this design element and create asymmetrical hemlines to follow the print. Or create a simple knit shell to wear under a cardigan of Reduction Plum, a fabulous bamboo French terry knit from Telio & Cie (page 26). We featured this fabric in three other colors in our winter catalog, and they were hits, so we chose this plum to coordinate with the prints in this collection.

You have probably heard the phrase “Reduce, Reuse, Recycle.” What does that refer to? Reduce your consumption and waste of things like energy and food, which we have already mentioned. Reuse items, like the cloth napkins and handkerchiefs. Recycle your glass and plastic bottles, plus your newspapers and magazines. Plastic is nearly impossible to break down and recycle, so make an effort to buy items in tin or glass instead of plastic, then wash and recycle them when they are empty. If you made the switch to K-cups for your morning coffee, purchase a reusable cup and some bagged coffee grounds, because the plastic K-cups are clogging landfills horribly. Unplug your electronics when not in use, even the items that are done charging, to combat “Vampire power” which sucks energy to the tune of $19 billion per annum in the USA alone according to the National Resources Defense Council. Many power companies will do a free energy audit of your home, and some will even swap out your incandescent and compact fluorescent lamp (CFL) bulbs for LED bulbs at no charge, which use less energy and last much longer. Turning your water heater down to 120° “can save about 550 pounds of CO2 a year” according to Columbia University. Turning your heat down in the winter and replacing some of your air conditioning use with fans goes a long way to saving energy. There are many simple things we can all do to combat wasteful energy usage and start making a difference.

Reduction Dynamic is a bold polyester peachskin print filled with rich colors, subtle butterflies, and a hint of a boldly neon coral. Make a statement in a wrap dress to wear to church this spring, or a striking sarong to wear to the beach or pool. The floral colors are red, dark mango, plum, florescent coral, and ocean blue. A note about the florescent coral - Try as we did, we were not able to accurately depict that color in print. If your swatch does not have the bright neon coral, please request a swatch if you want to see how bright it is prior to purchasing the yardage.

Are you ready to skillfully create a new spring jacket? Choose Reduction Stripe, a printed 100% cotton canvas. Dark mango, plum, burgundy, raspberry and tan mingle in a chillaxed horizontal stripe. Order a little extra so you can stitch together a matching tote bag or draw-cord messenger bag. The jacket will look great when worn over a ruched knit top sewn from Reduction Slub, a slightly textured tencel knit in a light T-shirt weight. If you like to layer your garments in the summer, make an easy camp shirt out of Reduction Voile to wear over your tencel knit top. Lightweight and breathable, with a slightly crisp hand yet soft to the touch, this cheerful fabric is a delight to wear in the coming hot summer months. The recommended price per yard from the mill is $12.99, but we won’t tell them about our low price if you don’t.

These next three fabrics center around the fiery orange-red color that reminds of a hot ember on a campfire. Begin with Reduction Rowena, a floral Liverpool crepe knit on a black background. Sew a short sleeve top to wear on summer evenings, and a wrap dress to wear all year long. For those of you who love wearing matte jersey knits, we present Reduction Fire. The cool rayon will look hot as a flowing skirt worn with a loose tunic stitched out of Reduction Jaipur. Dramatic colors of ember orange, avocado green, violet and white pop against the black background. Feel how soft this fabric is. You know you want to wear it.

Transit Italia was milled in Como, Italy by Serikos®. This super sharp stretch faux leather in winter white features a black floral embroidery. The width selvage to selvage is 57”, but the embroidery runs 54”, so use that measurement for your yardage calculations. There is a slight stretch for built-in-ease. We do recommend you dry clean this, although in most cases you will be able to wipe clean with a damp sponge. Tailor a motorcycle jacket with a metal zipper to wear over a little black dress made from our Transit Doubletake. This is the black ponte piqué we promised you at the beginning of this catalog when we presented you with the white #14. The firm structure makes this a wise choice for sewing princess seamed dresses as well as knit jackets and slacks. Throw a splash of red into the ensemble with a crinkled rayon blouse stitched from Transit Rouge. All you need is a simple boat neck top to wear with your embroidered jacket and black knit pants for a stunning summer outfit.

If you are going back to the office, make a new outfit that will feel scrumptious to wear. Tailor a blazer from Transit Noir to wear with a flowing skirt crafted from Transit Plaid and tie it all together with a knit top stitched from Transit Crimson. The black suiting is a stretch poly-rayon blend from Telio & Cie in Canada. You’ll enjoy its soft hand, subtle drape and slight stretch for any number of casual separates and even to wear as a dress with pearls to a formal wedding. Turning now to the plaid, you might assume at first glance it’s a worsted suiting, but the light weight and lovely fluidity are pure challis. Consider making a large square scarf to wear tied at the neck as an accent piece. Our crimson knit is a poly-viscose blend, similar to the four we featured in the winter 2020 catalog in wine, beige, mocha and plum. This shade of blue-red is very flattering for most people to wear and really helps bring out the red in the plaid. For our final fabric in this Spring Catalog we present to you Transit Baroque, a beautiful all cotton matelassé. We imagine you will want to create a vintage style swing coat to wear on cool summer nights.
