Cocktail Collection Let’s take a trip back a century ago to the Roaring Twenties. What prompted this lively but polarized era? In the previous decade a World War was fought while the Spanish Flu raged. Out of these dark times came a need to enjoy life in the moment. Ah, but here in the states, Prohibition was enacted, and liquor was shunned...... by some. The Christian Women’s Temperance Union was based here in Evanston, while across the border in Chicago, speakeasies popped up in every neighborhood, featuring loud jazz bands and new cocktails. In fact, nearly 30 of these establishments are still operating in ChiTown today. In this issue, we were inspired by the fun cocktails of the Roaring Twenties. Many were made from gin, which was easy to distil in small batches at home. But this bathtub gin was rough to drink, so strong fruit or citrus flavors were added to make the hooch more palatable. Rum runners brought the flavor of Cuba to the states by boat along the East Coast, or down the Great Lakes by way of Canada. Some drinks had fizz, which was created either with soda or by roughly shaking with egg whites until frothy. Some cocktails - and their names - were inspired by current events or celebrities. One drink called the Monkey Gland was concocted when news broke of a French surgeon who (falsely) claimed that life expectancy could be increased if a monkey’s glands were grafted onto human reproductive organs. Before the summer ends, try some of these cocktails at your next outdoor gathering.

To kick off our Transition 2021 catalog, we begin with a couple of prints from the Frida Kahlo collection produced by Robert Kaufman’s fashion division. Cocktail Frida and Cocktail Kahlo feature the same colorful flowers in yellow, fruit punch, and wisteria, tossed on either a white or a black cotton lawn. Order both of these beauties and make the same garment in two colorways, or use them as contrast pieces in the same garment. To complement these delightful shirtings, we matched up two cotton jersey knits that can be worn as tank tops, yoga skirts, lightweight knit pants or shorts. Cocktail Sunshine is an all cotton, 64” wide, bright yellow knit, while Cocktail Punch is a dark pink cotton/spandex knit that’s 67” wide.

Cool down with some refreshing tones in our Fizz collection. Fizz Dynamic is a bold Liverpool crepe knit print in blues and jade. We featured this same print in our Spring catalog in a coral and pink combo. These jewel tones are wearable throughout the year. The print is large enough to sew into a stunning statement dress, and cool enough to be worn as knit pants or a great top.

Fizz Collection Chicago Fizz starts us off with a bang! In 1935, barman Albert Crockett quipped in The Old Waldorf Astoria Bar Book that the Chicago Fizz was “an importation from the Windy City long before bombs, machine guns and sawed-off shotguns had come to disturb its peaceful life.” 1 ounce dark rum 1 ounce ruby port 1/2 ounce freshly squeezed lemon juice 1/2 tsp superfine (castor) sugar 1 egg white Club Soda

Pour everything except the soda in a shaker. Shake vigorously for one minute, to get the egg white to froth a bit. Pour through a strainer into a collins glass with crushed ice. Top off with club soda.

The next two rayon fabrics look like they were made for each other. We pulled Fizz Jade from our reorderable Rayon Challis Collection to work as a solid companion piece to Fizz Impression. These lightweight, woven gems beg to be sewn into a flowing dress, or blouse and skirt ensemble. The solid challis can be interfaced and cut on the bias for binding the print. Although the solid jade is a tone darker than the colors in our printed poly chiffon VF214-10, they really blend well together. Consider sewing a base from the rayon challis solid, then an overlay from Fizz Waves.

Absinthe Collection In our first collection, we mentioned the Monkey Gland Cocktail. Here’s one recipe for it. We named the collection Absinthe in honor of the potent ingredient used to coat the glass. In the US, absinthe was a banned substance, believed at the time to have hallucinogenic properties. A dash of absinthe 2 ounces gin 11/2 ounce fresh orange juice ¼ ounce grenadine Orange slice for garnish (or orange peel twist) Chill a martini glass. Swish the absinthe around the inside of the chilled glass to coat (discard excess). In a cocktail shaker, add the gin, OJ, and grenadine and shake well so the drink is thoroughly chilled. Spark joy in your wardrobe with a billowing blouse sewn from Absinthe Joy (pg 9). This crepe georgette floral print features the colors of seafoam, mango, bright pink and yellow on a white base accented with pale cream floral shadows. This piece is bold and delicate in equal measure. The next two fabrics were chosen to be worn together. Absinthe Seafoam is a cotton rich jersey knit with plenty of all-way stretch. Whip up a tank top or bandeau - or use it as an underlining for Absinthe Breeze. This stretch lace has a mellow vibe, with varying hues of seafoam, patina, and moss, cascading through the fabric like cool, rippling waters over a floral lace base.

If you are sewing shorts or a skirt from the fish print, knock out an ivory cotton gauze tank top to wear right now as the summer heat rages. Absinthe Ivoire is also a fabulous choice for tunics and cold-shoulder shirts. The crinkled texture is mimicked in our Absinthe Chill rayon floral print. The ivory flowers look fabulous with the preceding gauze. Sew full-legged, drawcord pants of the print to wear with your gauze top, or whip the floral print into a summer dress, tunic, or flowing bohemian skirt.

This collection is the Bees Knees, for sure! Just look at B.K. Crepe’s unusual coloration on a navy bubble crepe georgette fabric. We chose to accent the persimmon color with our companion knit, B.K. Pomegranate. This super lightweight rayon knit has great crosswise stretch, minimal lengthwise stretch, lovely drape and is soft to the touch. We envision this being sewn into a ruched top or a simple shell, and even a long knit nightshirt to keep you cool on hot summer nights.

B.K. Collection This drink is totally the Bee’s Knees! In the 1920’s, that was an expression that meant something was the best. At the Hotel Ritz in Paris, famous bartender Frank Meyer took the traditional gin sour cocktail and replaced sugar with honey. Add some depth to your drink by using artisanal flavored honey. If you use mass-produced honey, mix 1 part honey with 2 parts warm water to create a syrup, otherwise the honey will sit in your glass as a big glob. Our recipe calls for this smoother honey syrup. 2 ounces gin 3/4 ounces honey syrup Juice of half a freshly squeezed lemon Lemon twist for garnish Chill a martini glass. Fill a cocktail shaker with ice and add all ingredients (except the garnish). Shake vigorously and strain into the martini glass. Add your garnish and enjoy. this sweet and sour concoction.

The next two chiffon prints came to us from a supplier in California, but the navy print is in short supply, so we did not swatch it for everyone. If you want a swatch, just let us know, but at least you have a swatch of B.K. Red Feather to give you an idea of the weight, texture and opacity of B.K. Navy Feather. The feathers are 31/2” plumes, not including the stem, and there is a 43/4” repeat to the design - use nap layout. We think these fun crepe georgette prints will look fabulous as scarves and blouses with a simple rolled hem. Craft a transitional knit jacket or cardigan from B.K. Plush to take you from cool summer evenings into brisk autumn days. This ivory French terry knit is all cotton with good all-way stretch. You can even make a hooded cover-up to wear to the beach or pool.

Rickey Collection When Joe Rickey was finished serving as a colonel in the Civil War, he made his home in Washington DC as a lobbyist. Joe became a regular at Shoomaker’s bar, entertaining politicians and newsmen. The original version of his drink did not have simple syrup, but during prohibition the gins being distilled in small batches could be fairly vile, so simple syrup was added at speakeasies to make the gin more palatable. 2 ounces London dry gin Freshly squeezed juice from half a lime 1/2 tsp simple syrup (optional) 4 ounces club soda Lime wedge for garnish Fill a highball with ice. Pour in the gin and lime juice. Add the club soda. Garnish with the lime wedge. If you don’t have simple syrup, use a little castor sugar to take the tart bite down a notch. We were really surprised by Rickey Stripe on page 18. It’s so soft to the touch, we thought is was rayon, not polyester. Pickford Collection There are many legends regarding the creation of the Mary Pickford cocktail. Named for the starlet of silent movies, Mary Pickford was regarded as America’s darling (despite being Canadian). But sources vary as to who created the drink, when and where. Most legends say it was in Cuba while she was filming there or on vacation. During prohibition, this fruity drink was a great alternative to all the bathtub gin the speakeasies were slinging. 11/2 ounces white rum 11/2 ounces fresh pineapple juice 1 tsp grenadine or Cointreau 11/2 tsp maraschino liqueur Maraschino cherries Chill a martini glass. Fill a cocktail shaker with ice. Add all the liquids and shake until well chilled. Strain into a glass and add a cherry or three for flair.

Complete the ensemble with slacks tailored from Pickford Stripe, a stretch linen/cotton blend. Please note, there is no crossgrain stretch, and 30% lengthwise stretch, so the manufacturer intended this fabric to be cut across the grain to utilize the stretch. This will orient the stripes as vertical, rather than horizontal as swatched (we always swatch with the selvages to the left and right so you view the fabrics with the length running up and down). If you are not used to calculating yardage for cutting across the grain, simply lay your pattern pieces down side-by-side in a row, then measure from left to right at the widest part. You most likely will need less fabric than your pattern calls for.

This handsome grey Oxford cloth comes to us from the fashion division at Robert Kaufman. It is lighter weight than most Oxford cloth we come across, but it still has the traditional styling with a white warp thread and colored weft, in this case black. Construct a classic shirt from Angel Ash to wear all year long, or stitch it into tailored shorts to wear with a blouse sewn from Angel Impression. This is the purple version of the teal/blue rayon challis we featured earlier, VF214-09. Light, drapey, soft to the touch, it is a wonderful choice for making flowing garments. You can wear your new rayon challis blouse with slacks and a jacket made from Angel Crepe, a lovely purple polyester tropical suiting. p. 30

Angel Collection When researching the Fallen Angel cocktail, we came across this insight from The Art of The Drink: “Great cocktails have keen names, and the Fallen Angel is idyllic. What is a fallen angel? It is a mythical creature that was held in high-esteem but due to folly they never reached their potential, at least not the ones thrust upon them. Foolery affects humans too, a few too many drinks and you may fall from grace—you know you’ve been there. Maybe Lucifer had a few too many good cocktails.” The recipe for the Fallen Angel first appeared in the 1930 Savoy Cocktail Book. This is an adaptation. 2 ounces London dry gin 1 ounce fresh lemon juice (or 1/2 oz fresh lime juice) 1 dash Angostura bitters 2 dashes crème de menthe or absinthe Fill a cocktail shaker with crushed ice. Add ingredients and shake. Strain into a martini glass. Garnish with a mint sprig. This drink is very sour, so some people add a little simple syrup to adjust the taste. But, maybe, the sour taste is to remind people of how far the angel fell?

The last trio in our collection features grey with a warm, almost pale lilac, cast. Angel Check (pg.31) cotton gauze is one of those fabrics that you will want to wear all the time because it is so ridiculously soft. Color block it with Angel Silver cotton gauze from our basic stock collection. For a fun bottom weight, we present Angel Houdstooth. This printed cotton twill is ideal for sewing straight skirts, slacks, vests, jackets, and princess seamed dresses.

Last year we sold out of nearly all our batiks, and we are finally able to start replenishing the stock. We reserved two Bali Batiks from Robert Kaufman to feature in our catalog. Sidecar Lowball features a rich chocolate brown that reveals a mingled base of brown, cream, tan, seafoam, grey, and moss. Sidecar Highball also features the chocolate brown printed over mottled French vanilla, pale lilac, steel blue, grey, chocolate, and moss. It was the accent of moss in both batiks that inspired us to choose Sidecar Herringbone as a solid companion. This cotton is double woven, with the herringbone on the face, and a grid pattern on the back.

Sidecar Collection If you think the name of this drink refers to the passenger seat of a motorcycle, you’d be wrong. In bartender’s terms, a sidecar was a shot glass they would drain excess liquor into after mixing a cocktail in a shaker. An iconic drink of the Prohibition era, recipes can be found in the popular bartending guides of the day. This tart beverage is made with brandy and orange liquor, but for a sweet contrast, rim the glass with sugar. The original recipes called for equal parts Cognac, Cointreau, and lemon juice, but nowadays you will find it being mixed with 2 parts Cognac to one part each of the other liquids. 11/2 ounces Cognac (or any brandy) 3/4 ounce Cointreau (orange liquor) 3/4 ounce freshly squeezed lemon juice Optional: orange peel twist garnish and sugar for rim Fill cocktail shaker with ice. Add all ingredients and shake until well chilled. Strain into a cocktail glass. Add garnish.
