Aloha, and welcome to the Summer 2022 Vogue Fabrics Catalog. Our theme this month is inspired by the tropical fabrics we have selected for you this issue. What better way to begin than with a fantastic Hawai’ian style print on heavenly combed cotton from fashion designer Tori Richard. Hawai’i Aloha features pale yellow flowers and lovely green leaves on a red background. The weight and hand are ideal for creating Aloha shirts, shells, tunics, and sundresses. The next two fabrics come from an Italian mill and look amazing together. Hawai’i Reversible is an all cotton double knit featuring a rich blue-red on the one side and a slightly shimmering warm beige on the other. Stitch up a chic knit jacket to wear over a top crafted from Hawai’i Intrigue. This colorful knit features stripes of red, steel, celery, mango and beige that undulate with the knit pattern. The reverse has a cool look as well, so don’t hesitate to incorporate that as your contrast accents.

Hawai’i Collection One of the most remarkable places on earth exists quietly, beautifully, out in the Pacific Ocean. The Hawaiian islands are a completely isolated cluster of land mass formed by hundreds of thousands of years of volcanic activity. Their borders continue to evolve due to active lava flows and underwater eruptions. Seriously, look at Google Earth for Hawai’i, then zoom out. The islands are .01% of the space in the Pacific, and nothing is remotely close to them. It is said the Polynesians first arrived to the islands over 1,000 years ago. That’s a journey over 2,500 miles of pure coincidence hitting the land masses. The islands derive their name from the proto-Polynesian word for “place of the gods” - hawaiki. For centuries, the Hawaiian language was strictly spoken and all knowledge and history had been passed down orally through storytelling and ritual dancing. In 1778 when captain James Cook landed there, he called them the Sandwich Islands in honor of his patron, the Earl of Sandwich. Missionaries created a written version of the Hawai’ian language in order to teach the Bible - and they only needed 12 letters of the alphabet to do this: A, E, I, O, U, H, K, L, M, N, P, W. There is also a 13th consonent that looks like an apostrophe but signifies phonetic glottal stop. During its quiet isolation from the world, the islands were run by chieftains in a tribal manner, with much fighting between clans. The bloodshed ended in 1810 when one man united the people, becoming the first monarch: King Kamehameha. Within the century that followed, a coup, an annexation, and a surprise attack from Japan all paved the way for Hawai’i to join the USA as the 50th state. If you have not visited the islands yet, make a plan to go. The beauty of the land and of the people are unsurpassed. The biodiversity is amazing. The ceremonial traditions that continue to be celebrated by the people are joyous to behold.

Deities Collection The deities of the islands rivaled the gods of Rome, Greece, and the Norse. Most famous is Pele, the goddess of fire and volcano, or “she who shapes the sacred land.” She is a rival of Poli‘ahu, the goddess of snow (yes, Hawai’i has snow on the mountain peaks). It is said that Pele was banished from her home in Tahiti “for creating hot spots,” a direct connection between Hawai’i and Polynesia. Other gods include Maui, a sun god/demigod imbued with the strength of Hercules and the tricks of Loki. One holy trinity included Kane (KAH-ney), Lono and Ku, three brothers who emerged directly from the deep blackness of Pō (divine darkness before time). Kane used light to fight back the dark, creating day. Together, the three created bodies of red clay and breathed life into them, creating man (incredibly similar to the Genesis story of Adam being created from ademah - red clay - and having life breathed into him). There are gods of war, fertility and childbirth, cultivation, wild boars, sorcery, and the underworld. One Hawaiian style of god that does not exist in the Norse or Mediterranean mythologies are the shark gods, considered the guardians of the ocean. According to OceanSyrup.com, “The Kanaka Maoli (Native Hawaiians), believed that when you die your family could have your corpse transform into a shark.” Chief of Oahu’s shark gods was Pele’s brother, Kamohoali‘i, who could change into any fish and travel in any waters. He is credited with bringing the Polynesians to Hawai’i.

Saf-T-Pockets #2004 “Twice as Nice” -

We picked up two “Waikiki Cotton Poplin” prints from the fashion division of Robert Kaufman for this issue. Deities Maui features beige hibiscus, pineapples, leaves, huts, and water on navy blue, while Deities Kona (VF223-12) is the same print in red and white. These are light enough to wear as tops and tightly woven enough to be worn as summer shorts, Capris, or a skirt. Sandwiched between the two prints is Deities Oatmeal, a woven rayon/linen blend ideal for sewing billowing draw-cord pants and an oversized button-down top to wear over a bathing suit at the beach or pool. Don’t skip over Deities Faille, our tightly woven, dark navy, all cotton, 68” wide fabric that begs to be sewn into slacks, shorts, a straight skirt, a summer jacket, and a matching beach tote that you can embroider. How cool is that?

Volcano Collection Volcanoes are a pretty big deal in Hawai’i, which is home to four active, two dormant, and some extinct volcanoes. The world’s most active volcano, Kilauea, is located on the island of Hawai’i and its summit lava lake is home to the goddess Pele. In 1990, it erupted, and the lava flow wiped out the town of Kalapana. Over a three year period of lava flows spreading, cooling, and spreading, a new coastline was created, extending almost 1,000 feet beyond what had been previously mapped. Since 1983, the landmass has grown over 900 acres, with the layers that reach into the ocean still highly unstable. These volcanic extensions make Hawai’i the only state that continues to grow in landmass. Also on that island is the world’s tallest volcano, Mauna Kea, which is sinking into the underlying sea floor under its own massive weight. Twenty-two miles southeast of the island of Hawai’i lies an underwater volcano that is slowly growing with each eruption. We do mean slowly. It isn’t expected to break the ocean surface for another 200,000 years. Originally named Lō‘ihi in reference to its elongated shape, the Hawai’i Board on Geographic Names changed it last year to Kama‘ehuakanaloa, in a nod to Kama‘ehu, the red island child of the gods of the earth and sea. Volcanoes are a major tourist attraction, and people sometimes leave with lava rocks and beach sand as souvenirs. Island culture teaches that all such items have spiritual significance, and removing these items from their homes will bring a curse from Pele on the perpetrator. When tourists return home and incur misfortune, they tend to send the lava rocks and sand back to the parks, sometimes with notes of apology. The park rangers replace these items - thousands per year - and even say a prayer of good health and happiness for the penitent tourist.

Hula Collection

LJ Designs “Meringue Pants”

Hula is a traditional dance that owes its origins to Polynesian culture or Hawai’ian gods, depending on your beliefs. The dance entertains, calls on gods for good events to transpire, and recalls traditional stories from the ancients. That’s a lot to put in a dance. You may be thinking of the new style of hula, with grass skirts and fire and rapid movements, but that is not what traditional hula looks like. Instead, it is slower, soulful, powerful, full of some thundering steps like a volcano erupting, and smooth movements, like the island breeze. Dancers move rhythmically to the sounds of traditional drums and rattles carved from gourds and bamboo sticks that are slapped together in the traditional hula kahiko. Historically, men and women danced together, topless, wearing loincloths and skirts made from a traditional, decorative barkcloth called pā‘ū. In 1830, Queen Ka‘humano, a Christian convert, declared the hula immoral and illegal. This edict was widely ignored in private, and then widely ignored in public upon her death two years later. King Kalakaua restored the hula to glory by requesting a week of hula at his coronation in 1883, giving him the moniker of the Merrie Monarch. In 1893 the monarchy was toppled in a coup, and the hula was not performed at official government celebrations for nearly 100 years. Today you are more likely to see hula ‘auana, which is more melodic and features stringed instruments like guitars and ukulele. If you want to see some traditional hula kahiko, do a search for it, or the Merrie Monarch Festival, on YouTube. The festival is a week long cultural celebration filled with art, dancing and other performances.

p. 15

Continuing with our mellow blues we proffer Hula Flutter (pg. 15), a contemporary abstract print on crepe georgette. This is the ideal fabric for a sarong or a squared-off scarf-style shirt to wear over a bathing suit at a posh pool. You can also wear it as a loose top over a knit cami, which will look sharp when worn with summer slacks tailored from Hula Foam, a white rayon and linen blend. The amount of rayon in this fabric tones down the typical linen wrinkles, so you can have the look of linen without the creases. Those slacks will also look perfect with a wrap top sewn from Hula Nightscape, another of our wide rayon jersey knit prints. So soft! So stylish!

Lei Collection When visitors arrive to Hawai’i, each is given a fresh lei - a garland of flowers, like orchids, jasmine, or plumeria. There are many traditions associated with the lei, including how to wear it and how to respectfully discard it after use. When you receive a lei, don’t wear it like a necklace. Instead, drape it resting on the outer portion of your shoulders with equal amounts resting down your front and your back. If presented with a lei, be prepared to receive a kiss on each cheek as well. It is disrespectful to refuse such a gift, so accept it with a smile. Leis are given for any number of events, including weddings, graduations, funerals, and fun gatherings like lu’aus. Sometimes they are worn like a headress (haku lei), or wrapped around a wrist or ankle which is popular with hula dancers. Some men prefer the native maile lei or alternative ti leaf lei, said to bring good fortune and ward off evil spirits. These six foot long garlands of braided leaves may incorporate some blossoms or be open ended and worn like a stole. Pregnant women wear open ended floral leis or the haku lei because a closed lei is said to be unlucky for the baby. These fun adornments can also be crafted from nuts, feathers, and shells. Regardless of the style, or the natural elements which create it, don’t toss it out when you are done wearing your lei. Instead, be respectful and either hang it from a tree or bury it to return it to the earth. Good words to know when visiting the islands are aloha which is an all-encompassing term for love, affection, peace, hello and goodbye, and mahalo which means thank you. Hawai’i is the only state to have two official languages: Hawaiian and English.

When we think of the tropics, palm trees swaying in an ocean breeze springs to mind. We have incorporated Lei Palm, a richly colored poly-cotton twill, to brighten up your summer wardrobe. It perfectly picks up on the green in Lei Gaudi, a beautifully colored abstract leaf print on red combed cotton by fashion designer Tori Richard. If the print looks familiar, we featured the same one on a black background in Early Spring (VF221-34). Another solid to wear with the print is Lei Royal, a lightweight stretch-woven poly-cotton-spandex blend. It is light enough to be worn as a top, and tightly woven to handle being made into shorts, slacks, or a skirt. Liesl + Co “Enmore Halter Dress + Top” Liesl + Co “Montauk Trousers”

For those of you who love fabric with a soft drape, cast your gaze upon Lei Fiorí. This rayon challis print with stylized floral pattern is a wonderful choice for a fluid tunic, a flowing skirt, or an A-line dress. We featured this print on a navy background in our Early Spring catalog as VF221-38. Whatever you choose to make, top it off with a cardigan sewn from Lei Olive, one of our popular imported French terry knits. Do you want to have the look of the tropics, but you get chilled from air conditioning? No sweat! Whip up a knit top from Lei Blooming, a fun print on a double-brushed ITY Sof-Knit. We did feature this print in a more mustard color in our Spring 2022 catalog.

Lu’au Collection You can’t visit the Hawaiian Islands without enjoying a spectacular lu’au. Granted, the productions put on at hotels and resorts are more recreations of Polynesian dances with the twirling fire sticks, hula dancers with grass skirts, and ukuleles. The word lu’au is not the traditional word for a big feast or party. In the 1800s a reporter enjoying one such event asked the host what it was called. The host thought the reporter meant the dish of food on the table that was made from taro root called lu’au. The reporter wrote about the party spectacle, referring to it as a lu’au, and that’s what stuck with Westerners. Historically, the foods served would have been fish dishes, both raw and cooked, and poi, a mash made from ti root and still loved on the islands today. Everything was finger food since there were no means of forging metal for utensils on the islands. To create a lu’au at home, you will want to slow roast a pig in an underground oven. To make the kālua pua’a (kālua pig) build an imu, or underground earth oven lined with volleyball-sized lava rocks and banana tree stumps, and a base layer of kiawe wood for the fire. Stuff a 300 lbs pig with hot rocks, then wrap it in the giant leaves from the banana trees you just chopped up for the imu. Put the pig in the ground and add your yams and such before layering wet canvas, banana leaves and soil. Wait several hours for the pig to slow roast before serving to your guests. Don your best Hawaiian shirt (which is called an Aloha shirt in the islands) or your best muumuu and get ready to dig in to your feast!

Feel the soft hand of Lu’au Sand and imagine how that will feel against your body on a hot summer day. Choose this viscose and linen blend in place of any 100% linen for a summer garment that will be less likely to crease than 100% linen. Tailor a blazer and walking shorts or slacks, a Bohemian dress that you can embroider, or wear this as Great Copy Patterns’ Maui Pants with their St. Croix top sewn from Lu’au Tropics. This Tori Richard combed cotton print features aqua palm fronds accented with seaglass green and beige on a muted rose background. The contrast of colors is wonderful, and trust us when we say this print is fantastic for men and women. Another solid option for shorts or a shirt is Lu’au Aqua, a stretch poly-cotton lightweight twill.

A non-floral print from Tori Richard is Lu’au Mosaic, which picks up the aqua and sand of our preceding solids to compliment the navy and royal colors in its frenetic design. We picture it being worn as a Hawaiian style Aloha shirt with slacks tailored from Lu’au Herringbone in navy poly-cotton, and topped by a simple sweater sewn from Lu’au Dunes acrylic blend sweater knit. How’s that for a quickie outfit to wear all summer?

Monarch Collection The islands were populated by different clans with chieftains and royal courts, warring against each other over the centuries. It wasn’t until 1810 when King Kamehameha I united the islands that a singular government was installed. There is much obscurity surrounding his birth and childhood, but one legend has stuck through the years. Like King Arthur fulfilled the prophecy of Excalibur, pulling the sword from the stone to be named the true king of England, Kamehameha is said to have overturned the Naha Stone, a volcanic rock weighing around 3 tons, signaling him to be the king of the islands. In 1795 he led 10,000 soldiers in 960 war canoes (or 12,000 men and 1,200 war canoes in some reports) and took control of island after island. In 1810, Kamehameha I unified the Hawai’ian islands under a single monarchy. The English sailors who had been traveling to the islands to trade guns and ammo, equipped chieftains with muskets and cannons and trained the men in their uses. Kamehameha used the full force of his new arsenal and slowly gained control of island after island. In 1810 he united the islands under a single monarchy, being hailed as Ali’i Nui, or high chief. He died nine years later, and his son (from one of over a dozen wives) Liholiho ascended. He left his mark by abolishing the kapu system of taboos, starting by abolishing the prohibition of men and women eating together during feasts. In the 1890s Queen Liliuokalani ascended to the throne, survived a coup attempt led by plantation owner Sanford Dole, and negotiated a treaty for Hawai’i to become a US Territory, paving the way to statehood in 1959. Hawai’i is the only state that had royalty, and the Iolani Palace on Oahu is a huge tourist destination.

Get ready for a fun two-part collection of rayon and cotton fabrics for summer comfort and style. Begin with Monarch Garden, one of three 66” wide, lightweight rayon jersey knits in this collection. Small but boldly colored flowers in red, fuchsia and petal pink are accented by ivory and gray on a dove gray background. One yard is all you need for a top. The petal pink of the print picks up the color of our cotton-rich Monarch Rose jersey knit. This medium weight, all-way stretch knit is ideal for yoga pants, bandeaus, tank tops, knit tops, knit dresses, and drawcord shorts. It doesn’t have the drape and flow of the rayon jerseys, so bear that in mind when choosing a sewing pattern. Color-block it with the ivory rayon jersey we are calling Monarch Cloud. This is from our stock collection of Rayon Jersey Knits which is brimming with new colors. The second of the wide rayon jerseys is Monarch Paisley. We love the soft pink background and how it makes the other colors pop. Two yards will be plenty for summer pajamas, or get a yard and a half for a surplice dress.

From the fashion division of Robert Kaufman comes Monarch Oxford lavender and white stripe cotton. This breathable fabric is surprisingly supple for an Oxford cloth and it has a soft hand, which opens up wonderful possibilities for garments. You can make a summer jacket and shorts, construct a button down shirt, or choose a pattern like Sewing Workshop’s Hibiscus which allows you to place some of the fabric on the bias for added visual interest. As a golf skirt it works well with Monarch Splash, the third wide rayon jersey knit in this collection. We love the lightness of the print, which looks like faded lavender and gray watermarks on an offwhite background. As a bonus fabric, we proffer Monarch Micro, a small lavender and off-white plaid cotton shirting from a famous design house in New York. Choose this combed cotton for a camp shirt, or to sew matching dresses for a little girl and her doll. Have some fun.

It has been a couple of years since we featured a black and yellow collection, and that one sold out fairly quickly. We hope we have enough stock to ensure you all get some of these lovely fabrics to make stunning garments this summer. We begin with Vista Blanca, an ivory French Terry Knit that begs to be your new favorite summer cardigan or comfy knit top. The next two prints are from the designers at Bernard Chaus. Vista Lā and Vista Pō (Hawaiian for daytime and nighttime) are heavy crepe georgette fabrics featuring wispy umbels blowing against the fabric. Use these together as contrasts in one garment, or create the same outfit in both fabrics for more wardrobe options. Their weight and drape make them ideal choices for flowing skirts, a-line dresses, stylish tunics, and cowl-neck tops. If you want to create a stunning look for evening, sew a blouse from one of the prints, and wear it with knit pants and a cardi sewn from Vista Onyx, a super soft double knit with lovely drape. It almost feels sueded.

New Look #6712 “Misses’ Top & Pants”

Vista Collection Hawai’i is truly one of the most spectacular places on earth. Ten of the eleven recognized climate zones can be found in this tropical paradise, including arid, temperate, and even polar. The legislature works hard to protect the lands, for ecological preservation as well as to retain its gentle beauty for the citizens and visitors alike. In 1927 the Islands banned billboards in an effort to preserve the spectacular vistas. It was 40 years before a second US state did the same, and only four states total have such a law. The Island of Kauai goes a step further in protecting its beautiful lands by banning structures taller than a palm tree. Two buildings do reach taller than the treeline: The Kauai Marriott Resort pre-dates the law, and the Princeville Resort rests on a cliff with stunning ocean views. In 2015, Hawai’i banned plastic bags from grocery stores, and continues to take steps in eliminating one-time-use plastics. This will help keep the ocean waters clearer for the Humpback Whale breeding time off the coasts of Maui and Lanai from November to May. To protect the incredible eco-systems of their coral, the state has been actively banning sunscreens that contain harmful chemicals which destroy the reefs. They raised the legal smoking age to 21, banned cigarettes and vaping products from all beaches and state parks, and eliminated all gambling including bingo and state lotteries. This leaves more time for people to spend their days surfing, whale watching, hiking the lava trails and finding waterfalls, before settling in for a yummy and entertaining lu’au at the end of a beautiful and peaceful day.
