Transition 2022
Cocoa Loco!
Since being brought to Europe from Latin America nearly 500 years ago, chocolate has become a global sensation. You know what else will be a sensation? The outfits you sew with our Transition fabrics!
Kicking off our Transition Catalog is Cacao Olive, a lovely all-way stretch ponte with a supple drape and soft hand. Sew a simple dress, or a knit jacket & slacks combo, then dress your outfit up or down with a change of shoes and jewels. Our buyers snatched up all the supplier had of this elegant Italian print when they were last in New York. Cacao Gouache is easy to sew, wear, and wash, and it looks spectacular. It’s everything we expect from an Italian mill. Choose this beauty for sewing any number of tops, tunics, dresses, skirts, and even palazzo pants.
The Sewing Workshop “London Shirt” Liesl + Co “Chai Tee”
If you aren’t ready to start sewing for fall, pick up some of Cacao Lilac, a pale hue of a popular linen blend. You can wash this to give it a softer, more casual appearance, or dry clean to keep its original characteristics. We think this would be great as Great Copy’s Maui Pants, and Sewing Workshop’s Gardenia dress - embroider or embellish the fabric for added interest. And definitely pair it with Cacao Tiles, one of two combed cottons from designer Tori Richard in this collection. The subdued colors soften the blocky print making it an incredibly interesting geometric design.

Cacao Collection Cookies, cakes, chocolates, and candies. Cocoa is used to create all the delicious treats that so many desire and consume daily. However, it wasn’t always used in such intricate ways. Originally the beans from the Theobroma Cacao tree were cultivated by ancient South American cultures, such as the Aztecs and Mayans, and given as romantic gestures, post-fight rewards for warriors, and even currency. Keep in mind that at this point cocoa beans weren’t ingested other than being steeped in hot water to make a rich but bitter drink called cacahuatl which was used primarily in religious ceremonies. Spanish Conquistadors brought the cacao beans back to Spain, added sugar and spices to the cacahuatl, and created a delicious hot cocoa. Spain kept their tasty treat a secret for 100 years before France and England caught on. Since cocoa beans had to be transported from South America to Europe, it was seen as a luxury mainly enjoyed by the royalty and nobility, who believed it to be healthy and an aphrodisiac. Cacao Trees were planted in equatorial regions closer to Europe to make transportation a little less daunting by ground, and the Industrial Revolution ramped production sufficiently enough for European commoners to buy all manner of chocolate products readily. By 1850, solid chocolate hit the market, and sixty years after that, chocolate confections were developed in Belgium and Switzerland. Today the world consumes 4.5 million tons of cocoa beans annually.

The next two fabrics we envision being worn together at work, or at a garden wedding. Cacao Stone is a stretch cotton sateen that begs to be sewn into Capris and a summer jacket to wear with a top whipped up in Cacao Fronds or even Cacao Gouache. Add strappy heels and you are ready for a night out. Cacao Fronds is the second Tori Richard print, this one featuring an underlying batik effect for the leaves.

Tasty Collection Cocoa is made from the seeds, or beans, of the Theobroma cacao tree. Theobroma means “food of the gods” in Greek, and these heavenly trees can grow up to 32 feet tall. Found primarily in equatorial tropical regions of Latin America, Southeast Asia, and West Africa, each tree takes between 3 to 5 years before it yields any pods. These pods, which grow to be about a foot long, can be harvested multiple times a year and contain around 50 cocoa beans each, or approximately 2500 beans per tree per harvest, which makes it a low-yield crop considering it takes 400 beans to make a pound of chocolate - yep, that’s just over 6 pounds per tree per harvest. These trees are grown across the 4.5 million cocoa farms across the continents. After being plucked from the pods, the beans are put in piles to ferment before being dried, roasted, ground up, and distributed. It’s as simple as that….or is it? Cocoa farms are usually run by families who do not have the means to fight against the several problems that come with cocoa production. The trees are highly vulnerable to pests and diseases which ruin the pods and make them unsafe for consumption. Without support and updated techniques, the families that grow the cocoa trees can lose nearly all of their yield. There is still hope for these families as more awareness is brought to the issue.

Get ready for some exciting new textures! We have many new honeycomb knits to offer, two are in this catalog, others will be available soon on our website. These have the softness of double-brushed ITY knits and feature a smocked design to produce a rich color and texture. This Tasty Collection begins with two such knits in tie-dye-esque flair. Tasty Terra (page 5) features warm, earthy neutrals from stone to pumice to brick. Tasty Skies picks up on p.6
our other key color in this collection with hues of blue from steel to midnight. Sitting between these two knits is Tasty Almond, a lightweight stretch cotton that can be worn as a shell, shirt, and even loose walking shorts for those super hot days when you want loose, breathable garments in a light-reflective color. It is a great neutral to have in your closet.
The next three fabrics inspired this collection. We have for you two of our newest cotton gauze colors flanking a loosely woven cotton print. Notice how Tasty Mulberry and Tasty Cranberry pick up the colors in Tasty Vintage? We picture you making a skirt from the print and making one top in both gauzes so you have options depending on your mood. You can also make a simple shell from the gauze, and a loose overshirt from the print.

Piece together an exceptional ensemble from the first four fabrics of our Bakers Collection. Bakers Indigo leads us off, with a poly-cotton blend in muted indigo that matches the tone of the blue in the three rayon crepeons that follow. We chose this to be your slacks, skirt, shorts, or light jacket to tie the following prints together. The
crepeons - Bakers Patch, Bakers Boho, and Bakers Stripe - feature a patchwork print, an all-over blender, and a stripe print respectively. Choose a sewing pattern that calls for a light to medium weight woven, like a challis or shirting, and then have fun deciding which way you want to place all the prints.

Bakers Collection Through centuries of innovation and new technology, dozens of different types of chocolates have been developed and thousands of different cocoa products have been crafted. Here in the United States, milk chocolate is the most popular for eating due to its sweetness and creamy characteristics. It only contains 10-40% cocoa and is mixed with sugar and milk. While delicious, it is best to avoid milk chocolate when baking due to its knack for overheating. Fans of baking shows may be interested to know that German Chocolate Cake was actually named for Samuel German, an American who developed a sweet dark chocolate for the Baker’s Chocolate Company, and the confection was called Baker’s German’s Sweet Chocolate. The recipe for “German’s Chocolate Cake’’ by homemaker Mrs. George Clay appeared on a Dallas morning news program in 1952, and it was a hit. General Foods owned the Baker’s brand by then, and they distributed the recipe to hundreds more news outlets and watched as sales soared. If you’re feeling adventurous, try ruby chocolate, a new type of chocolate unveiled in 2017 by Belgian-Swiss cocoa producers Demarche. Ruby cocoa is patented and its production method is a trade secret, so if you see a ruby Kit Kat bar, you will know the up-charge on the package price covers the cost of Nestle licensing the specialty confection for a limited run. More readily available is white chocolate, which contains cocoa butter but no cocoa solids or cocoa liquor, but mostly resembles vanilla in taste, and has a very low melting point.

Joy Collection
p. 16
Chocolate is a joy stimulant, meaning that people who consume chocolate feel happier immediately after. The latest research indicates that the flavonoid antioxidants cause relaxation of the veins, lowering blood pressure. Researchers at the Neurosciences Institute in San Diegofound that the “feel-good” chemical anandamide breaks down slower from dark chocolate, leaving us with a longer high in our brains. Cambridge neuroscientists did remark that enjoying a chocolate bar shows increased pleasure on brain scans, but they surmise this is due to the taste, not a pharmacological effect. Lead neuroscientist, Dr. Adrien Owen states, “Both smelling and eating chocolate activate areas of the brain that are known to be involved in creating feelings of pleasure. It seems chocolate has a unique blend of sensory qualities which make us feel good, activating pleasure centers in the brain.” Perhaps this is why JK Rowling chose chocolate as the healing component given to victims of Dementor attacks? According to Micahel Pollan, author of In Defense of Food: An Eater’s Manifesto, Americans who were shown the words “chocolate cake” had a common word association of “guilt”, whereas the French responded with “celebration.” Dark chocolate is said to have the most health benefits, because the process of removing the cocoa butter eliminates much of the fatty content. The cocoa butter, alternatively, is processed into a smoothing body cream. Ever since Europeans began processing and enjoying chocolate, there has been a correlation to chocolate and joy. Doctors prescribed chocolate to mend broken hearts, while nuns were forbidden its pleasures because of its supposed arousal factor. Quakers produced large amounts of chocolate in the hopes of replacing alcohol consumption with the confection.

Add a pop of green into your wardrobe with our Joy Collection. Begin with Joy Blossoms, a thick, tightly knit, cotton-rich option for princess seamed tops and dresses, straight skirts, and yoga pants. off-white flowers are accented by yellow, flanked by jade leaves, and set upon a midnight navy background. The jade coordinates beautifully with Joy Crepe, a stretch bubble crepe georgette with good opacity for a semi-sheer weave. How romantic it will be when sewn into a fluttering skirt or loosely constructed top!

There is no question the Euopeans have developed a love for all things chocolate. Belgian chocolatiers have leveled up their luscious cocoa game over the last seventy years, exporting more than they keep for their local consumers. Switzerland has the highest pounds of chocolate consumed per capita of any country in the world. The Swiss eat an average of 22 pounds a year per person, which is twice that of Americans. The 5 countries with the highest pounds per capita are all European countries (Switzerland, Germany, Ireland, United Kingdom, and Sweden). Meanwhile, in Africa, where a third of the world’s cocoa is produced, very few people consume chocolate. As little as 3% of the world’s consumption of chocolate takes place in Africa, because they grow cocoa for export. Unfortunately, many small cocoa farms in Western Africa are accused of forced child labor in hazardous conditions to the tune of 1.56 million children, according to the US Department of Labor. The DOL is working with governments and nonprofits to “promote a cocoa supply chain free of exploitative labor.” There is a difference between the way Europe produces chocolate compared to the United States, resulting in a creamier, richer epicurean experience. European standards require chocolate to have slightly more milk fat and milk solids than US standards. Also, the US tends to add butyric acid to mass produced chocolates for extending shelf life, and the acid produces a slightly sour or tangy taste that lead a recent HuffPost.com article to be titled “Why Hershey’s Chocolate Tastes Like...Well, Vomit.” The article goes on to explain, “Butyric acid is also found in rancid butter, parmesan cheese and, sorry, vomit.” Hershey’s denies the claim of adding butyric acid. But if you find yourself wanting to taste true Belgian Chocolate, visit our neighbors at The Belgian Chocolatier in Evanston, or order online at Belgchocpiron.com.

Cool down with some lightweight, breathable cotton and rayon fabrics that transcend age and gender with their universal appeal. Whether you construct a contemporary top, replace a Regency chemise, or stitch a classic shirt, choose our lightweight, all cotton stripe we named Euro Classique from page 23. It looks wonderful when paired with Euro Steel, our blue-grey stretch poly-cotton solid companion fabric. This stretch-woven is lightweight enough to be sewn into an overshirt, and substantial enough to be worn as shorts or slacks. Saf-T-Pockets #2002 “Shell Seeker” - ensemble
p. 24
Admit it....you were fondling Euro Reversible. We don’t blame you. This rayon gauze is so incredibly soft to the touch you will look forward to wearing whatever you choose to sew. We recommend a loose tunic with rolled sleeves and contrast neckband so you can showcase both sides. Or sew wide-legged, drawcord pants, and use the reverse as a large border hem. Making the garments loose will keep you cool on hot days and help to emphasize the fluid nature of this incredible weave.
From Spechler Vogle, a top name in cotton weaving, comes this royal and white microcheck shirting. Play around with your pattern and cut some parts on the bias, like the pocket, collar and cuffs for a classic men’s shirt style, or the sleeves and yoke for a fun summer top. Euro Check won’t disappoint. The color is a perfect match to Euro Royale, a stretch gabardine from our ever popular Felix Collection in our store. Choose this stretch-woven suiting for bottom-wight separates to tie your wardrobe together.

Euro Paisley is an interesting print. A 7” border runs along one selvage, yet the greater stretch is crosswise. We have shown it here with the border running down the center front of the Belgravia Knit Dress, so the full stretch will go around the body. This fabric still has 40% lengthwise stretch, which is enough stretch if you choose to feature the border at the bottom or top of a maxi dress or skirt. Oh, the options....play and have fun making something unique.

Treat Collection Holidays wouldn’t be the same without the ridiculous variety of chocolate on offer. Off the top of your head you could probably name at least ten different types of chocolate candy handed out door to door for Halloween, but do you know which of them is the most popular? Did you say Hershey’s? Well, then you’re wrong. The first place belongs to the Snickers Bar. Mars Inc. first introduced us to the bar in 1930 and now more than 15 million are produced every day and generate $2 billion in annual sales globally. In Latin America, Day of the Dead celebrations are infused with chocolate drinks and decorative chocolate death masks, harkening back to the Ancient customs of cacao being used for ritual observances. Mayan culture believed that chocolate “fed the dead, accompanied the soul’s travels and promised the possibility of rebirth.” Cadbury has become synonymous with Easter through their Cadbury Creme Egg that features a milk chocolate shell and soft fondant center. It was also Richard Cadbury who began selling heart-shaped boxes of his chocolates in 1861 England for Valentine’s Day, the first in the industry to do so. Christmastime inspires home bakers to whip up some chocolate ganache for decadent desserts. Ganache is made by heating heavy whipping cream just to a boil, pouring it over an equal measure of shaved chocolate, count to five and then stir to combine. While it is warm you can pipe it or spread it on top of cakes and pies. Leave some to firm up at room temperature for a couple hours, then use a melon baller to roll into small truffles for an elegant gift.

Dana Marie #1007 “Kimono Jacket & Vest” FitNice Systems “Lady Legs”
Plan now for autumn by tailoring a jacket from Treat Texture (p. 27). The golden color can easily be worn all year, but we absolutely loved it coordinated with Treat Filigree. This handsome and dark Tori Richard combed cotton print is a definite break from her popular Aloha Shirt prints. If you take inspiration from our images and make Dana Marie’s Kimono Jacket, we recommend black Kona Cotton as your lining to give it the weight it needs, and use the Kona as contrast pieces as well. For all of you who love Kaufman’s Arietta, feel our Treat Onyx. This firm ponte de Roma double knit is priced 25% less than the Arietta in our retail store. The catch? We can’t get more of this, so order it before everyone else does. Construct a princess seamed sheath dress, straight skirt, or a knit jacket and slacks. Stay away from patterns that call for fabrics with drape. If you choose to work with a pattern made for wovens, you will be able to size down because of the 35% all-way stretch.

Cutting Line Designs #52317 “Putting it Together” - ensemble
People are obsessed with setting new world records, and chocolate fanatics are amongst the savviest of the lot. One master chocolatier, Andrew Farrugia, decided to combine his love for chocolate with his love for sculpting. He crafted a 111-foot and 8 inches long train out of chocolate and displayed it at the Brussels South railroad station. On the day of its unveiling, there was a jazz band that included a keyboard player using a chocolate piano to play. The train remains the longest chocolate sculpture ever. It is not, however, the largest. That title belongs to the 22,458-pound chocolate building created by Aficion chocolate in China. Sculptures are great, but what about the classic chocolate bar? The world record for the largest chocolate bar ever (by area) was created by the Slovenian, Čokoladnica Cukrček, and measured 1,531.9 square feet. World records come in liquid form as well. In 2013, The Festival of Chocolate and The Museum of Science and Industry in Tampa set the record for the largest cup of hot chocolate by creating a mug that fit 732.753 gallons of the creamy liquid inside. This record was broken in 2018 when the Municipio de Uruapoan in Michoacán, Mexico, celebrated Three Kings’ Day with 1272.3 US gallons of hot cocoa. Clearly, when it comes to chocolate lovers, bigger is better.

Black and white - a classic combination on its own, as well as base to which you can add a pop of color with accessories. This collection provides you with a wonderful variety of textures and designs that can work together for endless mixing and matching.
Saf-T-Pockets #2014 “T-Shirt Trifecta”
Grasp Record Dots (p. 31) and feel the subtle texture from the weave. This tightly woven textile fits the bill for any pattern that calls for a light to medium weight woven with drape. We love it paired with Record Bouclé, a textured suiting that can be worn all year. Tailor a jacket, vest and skirt, and you will be able to mix and match the pieces with many of your wardrobe basics for myriad ensembles. Don’t forget to order the matching buttons and trims from page 9 to complete your outfit. We picked up Record Wildling from a New York supplier who specializes in designer overages. This lightweight rayon blend knit is ready to be worn as a sexy top.

Sewing Workshop Collection “Marceau Tee”
Record Mariner is a classic ponte de Roma double knit that is incredibly well made. Our collection of similar, re-orderable mariner stripe ponte fabrics from a famous mill sells for $16.99 per yard, but we picked up Record Mariner from a showroom close-out and are proud to offer it to you at a much lower price. As far as pontes go, this one has lots of body without being firm, making it an ideal choice for high-end knit shirts, a bodycon dress, or a cardigan. In our Treat Collection we featured a firm and stable black ponte bottom weight fabric. Now we are proud to offer you an extra wide, medium weight rayon knit for the garments that need a lighter fabric with some drape. Try a surplice dress, cowl neck tee, ruched top, flowing skirt, and even palazzo pants. Record Noir has plenty of allway stretch and a rich black hue.
