VF225-02 Equinox Vines

$1399yd Starting Nov. 12, 2022

Welcome to autumn. We are excited to present some truly exceptional fabrics and fibers in this issue, beginning with Equinox Elegance, a drab olive color of lyocell twill. Lyocel is similar to Tencel rayon, but gen erally produced from eucalyptus, bamboo, oak or birch. Equinox Elegance is soft to the touch, has wonderful body and drape, and is durable for long term wearing. Choose this exceptional fabric for relaxed jackets, wide legged pants, A-line dresses, button-down over-blouses, and much more. We purchased this plus the follow ing print from Telio as companions just for this catalog. Equinox Vines features a Celtic inspired tangle of blue vines, with white, orange, muted dark mauve, and drab olive accents on black cotton.

Thousands of years ago our ancestors worked the fields and hearded the flocks. Springtime brought the prom ise of new life, hope and good things to come as the fields were planted and the livestock gave birth. Autumn brought a chill, the fields were harvested, and animals were slaughtered and preserved for winter sustenance. People smoked, cured, bottled, and stored food to ensure they had enough to eat through the long winters. Living so closely to the ebb and flow of the seasons, celebra tions emerged to take stock, spiritually speaking, and to give thanks to the powers greater than themselves. As the world rotates on its axis, day length will vary around the world. When the north pole is pointed away from the sun, the days north of the equator get progressively shorter the farther north you travel. At that same time, south of the equator the days grow progressively longer the further south you travel from the equator. But twice a year, during the spring equinox and the autumnal equi nox, the sun is directly over the equator, and day and night are the same length. Ancient peoples took note of the equinox, even while believing the world was flat or carried on the back of a reptile. They didn’t comprehend the cause of the daylight change, but they did take the time to recognize it, and to celebrate the consistent na ture of the heavens. In this issue we will explore some ways various cultures celebrated (and still do to some ex tent) the autumnal equinox, when day and night are of equal length. We encourage you to take stock as well…. of your wardrobe. Go through it and if you haven’t worn something in a long time, give it away so someone else can enjoy it. Then see where you have deficiencies and let this catalog inspire new and wonderful ensembles you will love to wear.

Persephone Collection

p.8

The Ancient Greeks told the tale of Demeter, goddess of grain, and her daughter, the beautiful Persephone. It was said that Persephone was the most charming and sweetest of girls. Flowers bloomed wherever she stepped, and animals would follow in her wake. Be neath the earth sat Hades, god of the dead in the Underworld, who was lonely and depressed with all the, well, doom and gloom around him. He gazed towards the earth and spotted young Persephone, running through a meadow, making new blooms pop up for all the nymphs to pick behind her. Hades hopped on his chariot and rose quickly to the surface. Persephone felt the earth quake and heave. Frightened, she made haste back to her mother, but her efforts were thwarted. Hades broke through to the realm of the living, grabbed up sweet Persephone, and returned to the Underworld before any one could stop him or see him. Panicked when her daughter did not return to Mt Olympus, Demeter frantically asked the gods if anyone had seen her. They had not. Demeter descended to earth and searched high and low for Persephone. The immense anger, frustration, and fright that built up inside her manifested itself out wardly as crops and livestock died in her wake. When she learned of the abduction, she knew she could not go outright to the land of the dead to rescue her daughter. She let the lands start to die, proclaim ing the world would be as barren as her heart. Zeus, the god of gods as well as Persephone’s father, intervene and negotiated for the girl’s release. He and Demeter went to Hades who did agree to let the girl go but under a compromise. No one can eat in the underworld, yet Persephone, who had been ravenous for days, did eat the 6 pome granate seeds Hades strategically left on a platter. For six months she would live with Hades, and for six months she would be with the gods on earth. While on earth, the plants grew through Demeter’s happiness, yet while Persephone was gone, the crops withered and died, thus creating the seasons. Persephone became associated with both life and death, a balance. The Autumnal equinox was a time to celebrate Persephone and the balance of light and dark. People gave thanks to Demeter for the harvest and celebrated Persephone by eat ing lots of pomegranate seeds. Farmers today still refer to the period during which they receive less than 10 hours of light per day as the Persephone Period, as things cease growing when there are less than 10 hours of sunlight.

Celtic Collection

#2017Saf-T-Pockets“Traci’s Top” #2010 “Plenty of Pockets Pants”

Ancient Celtic people lived harmoniously with the timings and functions of the natural world. Stone circles and rows were erected as calendars marking the passage of the sun, moon, and constellations. In Autumn, the Harvest Moon appears large in the sky, usually around the autumnal equinox. Rising very early in the evening, the Harvest Moon appears very large on the horizon, providing a night light for people to continue to bring in the harvests. The Celts believed that spirits lived in the crops. Farm laborers carefully cut the wheat, barley, and oats with their scythes and sickles, beginning on the outer edge of the fields and working towards the center. The crop spirits would out-pace the workers, jumping from sheaf to sheaf, un til they were contained in that last, central bundle. The best reaper was chosen for the honor of cutting the last bundle and capturing the magical spirit. Blindfolded, spun around and around, sickle in hand (always a great combination at night...), the reaper chucked the sickle at the last sheaf until it was cut. This prized sheaf, imbued with the crop spirit, was braided into a dolly and hung indoors in a barn or over a hearth for the win ter and then plowed back into the soil in spring, thus releasing the spirits back to the earth to teach the crops how to grow. Celtic mythology celebrated Mabon, the second harvest, which fell on the autumnal equinox. People foraged the lands, gather ing the fruits, nuts, and berries from the trees and vines that grew in the fields, forests, and hedgerows. They gave thanks to the goddess of the earth for the food she provided and paid tribute to the approaching dark days of winter. People visits the graves of their family and friends who had passed away, another nod to the balance of life and death, light and dark. Druids have a similar equinox tradition called Alban Elfed that marks the balance of day and night, at the time of the second harvest. Today’s neo-Druids, along with pagans and Wiccans, gather at Stonehenge for a sunrise celebration on the mornings of the spring and fall equinoxes, as well as the winter and sum mer solstices. These four times per year are the only instances people are allowed up close to the revered ancient monoliths.

Michael Collection

Catholicism took hold in Europe and incorporated many of the pagan traditions as a way to help people feel comfortable with conversion. In 487 CE, Pope Gelasius declared the Feast of Saint Michael the Archangel, or Michaelmas, which falls on September 29. The Book of Revelations describes the War in Heaven where Archangel Michael defeats Lucifer in an epic tale of good conquering evil. There’s that balance again, which has led anthropologists to conclude it was strategically placed near the autumnal equinox. In Medieval Europe, Michaelmas (Michael’s Mass) was celebrated as a Holy Day of Obligation, a required day of rest. For a farmer, rest could only come after the fields were harvested, so the timing was important on this one. Portions of the harvest and the livestock were given as donations to the poor, and as gifts to the landlords. The Scots developed a bread-like cake called Sruthan Mhìcheil, or Michaelmas Bannock, consisting of equal parts barley, oats, and rye fresh from the fields. Country folk would honor their loved ones who had died by baking five-grain breads called Struans which they took to morning mass for a blessing be fore allowing the church to distribute the sustenance to the poor. This was another way to incorporate the balance of life and death, rich and poor, good and evil that the church incorporated into its calendar year to mimic the existing pagan practices. In the evening, people would crack nuts they had gathered during the recent foraging. Eating a goose became a tradition beginning in Ireland. Legend has it that an Irish king choked on a goose bone and was brought back to life by St. Patrick, the island’s patron saint. The grateful king ordered that a goose be slaugh tered every year on Michaelmas (geese hatch in spring and need the summer to plump up, so slaugh tering the fresh goose in March for St. Patty’s Day was a non-starter). The Michaelmas goose became a popular dish throughout Medieval Europe, and even today you can buy a Michaelmas goose at some restau rants in Pennsylvania.

Moon Collection

“It is on the Autumn Equinox day that the Yin and Yang are in a balance of power. Thus the day and night are of equal length, and so is the cold and hot weather.” This passage from The Detailed Records of the Spring and Autumn Period (770-476 BCE) provides insight into the respect the ancient Chinese held for the natural world. The Chinese calendar is lunar, so celebra tions like New Year can fluctuate when compared to the inter nationally used Gregorian calendar. But the autumnal equinox is a fixed day, no way around that. Sadness and courage are associated with autumn because the plants are withering and dying and the darkness is getting longer. This comes after a long period of joy during summer. The Chinese embraced all the emotions and understood them to be as much a part of nature as the sun and moon. To honor the fall equinox like an ancient Chinese philosopher, stand facing west, and take stock for a moment - think about your forward path in life, your dreams and visions for yourself, and find the courage to face what lies ahead. Weep for the people and things you have lost, as weeping is the sound of autumn, and the lungs are the internal organ of autumn. The West was associated with sunset (the longer days of winter), as well as with dreams and visions. Light white candles or set white flowers upon your table, for white, is the color of autumn, especially the majestic and rare white tiger. The autumn equinox, Qiū Fēn, was seen as a time when “thunders begin to soften, insects start making nests and water begins to dry up.” The ancient Moon Festival of the fall equinox, Jìyuè Jiéven, would see farmers placing dozens of rice dumplings on the perimeter of the crops to protect the harvest from hungry sparrows. Today the Chinese celebrate by passing around many mooncakes, tiny pastries filled with a tasty paste of either red bean or lotus seed. The evening sky is illuminated with lanterns that rise like stars into the darkness, the heat of the flames lifting the lanterns like tiny hot air balloons. The mooncakes honor the harvest moon, and the lanterns add a white twinkle to the darkness.

Buddhists in Japan observe seven days of introspection centered around the autumnal equinox. Ohigan stretches from three days prior to the autumnal equinox to three days past it. They view the balance of celestial darkness and light as a reflection of the earthly balance of ignorance and enlightenment. Ancestral graves are visited and cleaned, a symbolic way to balance life with death. To the observant Buddhist, the land of the afterlife lies to the west, and the sun will set directly to the west on the fourth day - the middle day - of Ohigan, making this period symbolic of life’s transitions. Tou hi gan means “to arrive on the distant shore” referring to the Sanzu River, a mythical body of water separating the living and the dead, the unenlightened and enlightenment. Higan, the other shore, “represents wisdom, lib erty, and compassion.” It is common practice to use this time for introspection and reflecting upon one’s words and deeds and actions towards others during the year. Have we made the world better? Have we been productive members of our community? Are we creating a peaceful environment or are we causing strife? Is the way we live adversely affecting the earth, air, and living beings? For over 1200 years, Buddhist temples have performed Higan-e, an observance to console the souls of the ancestors whose spirits reside on the distant shore. For the entire week, the faithful pray to the Buddha, and good deeds are performed in the hopes of one day attaining safe passage to the distant shore of enlightenment. It is tradition to place rice cakes made with sweet azuki-bean paste - o-hagi - on the altar - butsudan - in the family home. At this time in Japan, it is common to see the red spider lily bloom around graves. These flowers are referred to as Higanbana, or the flower of the dead, and are often artistically represented in association with the Ohigan observance.

Slavic cultures celebrated the fall equinox with fantastic festivals full of dancing, singing, and eating. Similar to the Celtic and pagan celebrations, it was a time to celebrate the harvest and give thanks for the bounty. Farm ers hired many villagers to help cut the grain stalks down, but the last sheaf would be left until Dożynki, an amazing harvest party. At the commence ment of Dożynki, the village’s best reaper would have the honor of cutting the wiązanka (last sheaf), and he would then hand it to the women to be woven into a plonem, which looks like a wreath or a crown. Woven with berries and nuts and colorful ribbons and flowers, the plonem was then placed on the best reaper’s head, symbolizing his anointing as the king of the harvest. This crown was then kept safe until the fields were sown the next year. The people would gather for prayers to thank their pagan gods for the bountiful harvest. The grains from the initial harvest were also blessed and kept safe for planting the following year, all subsequent grains were sold for food. The laborers would gather on the landowner’s property and have a big party to celebrate with an abundance of food, drink, and dancing, provided by the landowner. It was the last celebration before the onset of the cold weather when farming ceased for the year. Farm hands showed gratitude to the landowners for work and food, and the landown ers showed gratitude to the farm hands for their work in the fields. This autumnal equinox, bake yourself a babka and pour some vodka to toast the end of summer and welcome in the shorter days. Hunker down with the fabrics you order from this catalog and sew, sew, sew.
