Stradivarius. To many, this name signifies the pinnacle of sound quality for a stringed instrument. The Baroque creations of famed luthier, Antonio Stradivari of Cremona, Italy have been coveted by musicians, collectors and thieves for centuries. Through this catalog, we will pluck the highlights of the man, his prolific creations, and the enduring mystique that continues today. Born in northern Italy in 1644, Antonio apprenticed as a teen in woodcarving and wood inlay with his family’s landlord, Francesco Pescaroli. During this time, Antonio was sent to work on the purfling and inlay for the renowned luthier, Nicolai Amati in Cremona. For historical context, the first violins date back to the 16th century, and Amati’s grandfather, Andrea, was one of the first two Italian violin makers, his oldest specimen dating to 1565. Something must have stirred in young Stradivari, because not long afterward he became an apprentice under Amati creating stringed instruments. The oldest example of his work is a violin from 1666, when Antonio Stradivari was 22 years old and still a pupil to the master. Amati died in 1682, and Antonio ramped up his production, taking on many of Amati’s clients. He began to develop his own style regarding the shape of the instruments, and created a name for himself by placing his signature cards inside the instruments with his Latinized name: Stradivarius.

Happy New Year! Let’s get a new wardrobe rolling with this exciting collection of textures. Strad Couture combines the elegance of a Chanel-style yarn-woven tweed with a hint of clear shimmer. Tailor a classic boxy hip-length jacket and fringed skirt, a dress and ¾ length jacket, a plush cardigan, or a dramatic sweater coat. Pair your tweed with Strad Slinky, featuring a very subtle moiré and a lot
of lengthwise stretch (cut your pattern across the grain to make the most of this stretch). The slinky is substantial and fluid enough to make palazzos or a long tank dress, both of which can be topped by a loose-fitting over-blouse or tunic sewn from Strad Fronds. Any garment sewn from this lovely crepe georgette can easily be finished with a rolled hem or French seams.
For those of you who love fabrics with attitude, check out Strad Slither. White stretch denim has been printed with a black reptile scale design, which will be a show stopper as a jacket, romper, jeans, or color block it with Strad Onyx, a rich black, stretch bull denim.

No longer an apprentice, Stradivari was free to use his woodworking skills, bringing a new style to his creations. He increased the dimensions of his violins and cut a more distinct bevel, both of which effected the tonal quality and how the instruments felt in the hand. The larger violins became known as “Long Strads”. He also made two changes that visually separated his work from others. He outlined the heads of the instruments in black and he concocted a red wood stain which was vastly darker and richer than the pale blonde instruments of the period. Look for an image of his 1690 Tuscan Violin as a prime example from this period. By the turn of the century, Stradivari reverted to making the smaller violin in the Amati style, and continued this until his death at age 93. It is estimated he created over 1100 instruments, of which approximately 960 were violins. He also crafted some exquisite cellos, violas, mandolins and guitars. The style he used in his “Golden Period” from 1700-1725 are seen as the gold standard used as inspiration for centuries of instruments ever since. Some historians say Stradivari was incredibly dextrous, carving the heads and inserting the purling faster than all other luthiers, and others attribute his prolific creations to having skilled apprentices, including two or three of his 10 children.

Brown and blue have been such a strong combination in our retail store, we sought out some wonderful Wedgewood-colored fabrics for you. There are so many ways to incorporate Luthier Abstract crepe georgette into your wardrobe, including as a semi-sheer top, an overlay, and a scarf. If you are one of the Fitnice Sewing Sisters who jumped on the chance to order from our Classic Ponte Di Roma collection before it was publicly released, you will recognize Luthier Indigo as one of the options (called Wedgewood in the PDR collection). The fiber content of this fabric is the same as the Arietta from Robert Kaufman, and it has a very similar feel and all-way stretch, but this is not a color from Kaufman. This firm ponte is ideal for creating mixand-match garments like a knit jacket and pants, plus a dress and cardigan.

Printed in Korea, this showstopping denim features mottled blue on one side and a 21” border of a wildcat, flowers, and animal spots on the other. We wanted to sneak these last two fabrics into this collection because they were too good not to offer while it is still cold outside. Luthier G Chord stretch cotton pinwale corduroy already sold out in our retail store (don’t worry - we pulled stock aside for you!). Corduroy has been so difficult to find this year, and hunter green has been a topselling color. We found a lovely companion for it in Luthier Flora, a soft rayon challis print with body and drape. Choose this print for your next tunic, blouse, flowing skirt, or fit-and-flare dress.
Remarkably, nearly half of the instruments created by Stradivari exist today. They are coveted by musicians, music aficionados, conservationists, museums, and col lectors of fine art. Two violins are famously not played at all, and kept in pristine condition, serving as prime ex tant examples of Baroque master craftsmanship. Accord ing to Fein Violins, “Almost all Stradivarius violins have had their necks replaced with a longer neck and have a new bass bar inside. The Messiah Stradivarius is one of the few violins that has not been altered.” Another extant example is a violin called The Lady Blunt, named for the granddaughter of Lord Byron, Lady Anne Blunt. She was a pupil of the famous Parisian violin maker, Jean Baptiste Vuillaume, who sold the instrument to Lady Blunt in 1865. She held onto the instrument for thirty years be fore selling it. It eventually was purchased by a collector. In the hundred years since, it has continued to sell from collector to collector, all displaying the violin as art, rather than playing it. The color, clarity of design, and sound are thought to be as close to what would have come straight from Stradivari at the time of original purchase. In 2011, the Lady Blunt sold at auction by Japan’s Nippon Founda tion to raise $15.9 million benefitting the victims of the horrific earthquake and tsunami from that year. One very rare performans of the Lady Blunt came in 1971 when Sotheby’s auctioned the famed Strad. World class mu sician Yehudi Menuhin played the Lady Blunt for the bidders and attendees so they could hear the tonal clarity and richness of the highly prized violin.

The care instructions in this catalog are a conservative path, but not an absolute. There is no one size fits all for fabric care because of all the variables, such as hard versus soft water, well and septic versus municipal water, washers with and without a center aggitator, dryers that have a no-heat option, etc.
One supplier would have everyone dry clean every fabric, but for many of you this is not feasable.
Here are some general guides. You can always use your swatch to test how a fabric will react to washing and drying. Test wash the way you plan to wash your finished garments - this will remove any sizing and shrinkage prior to cutting/sewing.
Pro-Tip: Set your washer for an extra long spin cycle to remove excess water, then toss in the dryer on low heat for 5 minutes before hanging or laying flat. This minimizes wrinkles, and helps fibers last longer.

Let’s focus now on that famed sonic quality attributed to all Strads, as they are lovingly called. Many studies and tests have been conducted to try to figure out what makes these instruments so superior. For violins, violas and cellos, the sound emanates from the entire instrument - the neck, headstock, back and sides - vibrating and resonating in unison with the bowing and piz zicato (pluck). The tonal differences between an entry level violin for students and a pro fessional quality instrument for orchestral performances is akin to the tonal differ ences and richness of a song being sung by a child versus Jennifer Hudson. In a 2018 article in The Guardian, it is not ed that “...researchers found that the early Italian instruments produced a human-like ‘formants,’” the harmonic tones that correspond to resonances in the vocal tract. Specifically, the Amati violins produced formants similar to those from bass and baritone sing ers, while the Stradivari instruments had higher-frequency formants, closer to those of tenors and contraltos.” Over the past half century many tests have analyzed every aspect of Strads including the woods used, the components of the wood stain, the size and shape of the f holes. Changes to the shape, size, or density all factor in an instrument’s sonic clarity and richness. As soon as one conclusion is drawn, another study refutes it. Even a blind study of professional mu sicians playing various violins concluded the musicians could not tell which were Stradivarius and which were modern high-end instruments.

The Messiah. The Titanic. The Davidoff. These are names of some of the mot famous Stradivarius creations. The Messiah was created during Stradivari’s Golden Period, and remained in his possession until his death, after which his son sold it to Count De Salabue who then sold it to Luigi Tarisio. From then on, the provenance is in tact, as well as its “unworn varnish and crisp sound.” Tarisio was a buyer and seller of fine instruments with an affinity towards this one violin, which he could not bear to sell. French violinist Jean-Delphin Alard inadvertently gave it the name the Messiah because, as the center of so many discussions with Tarisio, “it was always waited for, but never arrived.” The next time you are in Oxford, England, visit the Ashmolean Museum to view this treasure. While you are there, check out the Hill and the Rawlins, two Strad guitars. The Titanic violin is so named because it was on the fateful voyage in 1912, while in the possession of the ship’s bandmaster, Wallace Hartley. According to Stradivarius.org, Hartley was playing the hymn “Nearer My God To Thee” as the ship sank. Hartley then placed the instrument into its near water-proof leather case, strapped it to his back against his cork and linen life jacket, and that is where it was found ten days layer by the Mackay-Bennet morgue ship, with very little salt water damage to speak of. Switching to another instrument, you most likely have heard the Davidoff cello played by the incomparable Yo Yo Ma, who has it on loan from the Vuitton Foundation until he retires from performing. To appreciate the incredible carving talents of Stradivari, search for images of the Cipriani Potter violin which features delicate Baroque carving along the outer edges. Only two Stradivarius mandolins survive: the eight-stringed Mandolino Coristo, circa 1705, and the ten-stringed Cutler-Challen Choral Mandolino, circa 1680.

When we showed this hi-multi chiffon print to our staff, some said it reminded them of fireworks and others said wildflowers. Either way, Homage Abstract’s frenetic print brightens the mood with vibrant colors on a black base. Choose it for a focal piece, such as a blouse or oversized scarf, to wear with Homage Chianti, a dark wine virgin wool blend made in Italy by Bonnotto. We purchased it as designer deadstock from a New York fashion house when they were done cutting their spring line, so the price is far less than what you would pay for regular order goods. Although it has 2% spandex, there is very little stretch to it.

Several famous musicians play Stradivarius instruments, but they don’t all own the prized pieces which sell at auction for millions of dollars. Collectors will loan the instruments out for specific events or to favorite artists. We mentioned Yo Yo Ma plays the 1712 Davidoff Cello, a richly hued orange-red cello previously owned by Jacqueline du Prè. In an interview with Yo Yo Ma, he discloses that Du Prè did not love how it reacted to her aggressive bowing, and she wound up favoring a different cello. “You have to coax the instrument,” he explains. “The more you attack it, the less it returns.” Itzhak Perlman owns the 1714 Soil Violin (pronounced swal) formerly owned by Yehudi Menuhin. It has an extensive provenance and is famously characterized by its vibrant red varnish and two-piece maple back construction featuring the wood grain joining in a chevron design, as opposed to a single back piece or the wood grain being joined strictly horizontally. Fun fact: the Fallout 3 video game requires the player to retrieve the Soil from an underground bunker that “serves as a sanctuary to the musical arts in a post-apocalyptic world.”
Julian Lloyd Webber OBE, brother to Andrew the incomparable composer, recently sold his Barjansky Strad cello after retiring due to an injury. Those of you who love the Golden Age of cinema will have heard Toscha Seidel’s Stradivarius violin, the ex-Kreisler, featured in the Wizard of Oz. Seidel also performed with his Strad on the soundtracks for A Midsummer Night’s Dream, The Adventures of Robin Hood, and Anthony Adverse - the latter two won Academy Awards for composer Erich Korngold.

There are a few notable Stradivarius instruments that have gained notoriety as ob jects for thieves. ABC recently showcased a true crime documentary featuring the Morini violin. Erica Morini was an Austrian Jew who was just five years old when she made her debut playing for Emperor Franz Joseph’s birthday party in 1909. She gained worlwide fame, regarded by The Strad journal as the, “most bewitching woman violinist of this century.” Her Stradivarius, among other prized possessions, was stolen from her New York Fifth Avenue apartment in 1995 while she lay dying in the hospital from heart disease. She was not told of the break-in, and she died believing her collection would be sold and the proceeds split between three Jewish charitable organizations. Another famous Strad theft occurred near Milwaukee in 2014. Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra concertmaster Frank Almond was in the parking lot of a local college after a performance when an attacker tasered him and made off with the 300 year Lipinski Strad that was on loan to him from a wealthy Wisconsin family. Unlike the Morini case, Almond’s instrument was re covered nine days later and three men were sentenced for the premeditated crime. In 2019 the documentary “Plucked” debuted at the Tribeca Film Festival, detailing the theft, recovery and convictions surrounding the Lipinski Strad. Current con cert violinist, Joshua Bell, owns the infamous 1713 Huberman Stradivarius violin, named for Polish violinist Bronislaw Huberman, from whom this rare gem was stolen...twice. In 1919, the Gibson violin, as it was then known, was taken from Huberman’s Vienna hotel room, but was recovered within three days. Nearly two decades later, the same instrument was stolen from his dressing room at Carnegie Hall by either nightclub musician Julian Altman, or his friend. Altman played the Strad for many years, including his time as a violinist with the National Symphony Orchestra in Washington, D.C. In 1985, the dying Altman confessed to his wife about the theft. She eventually returned the instrument and collected a $236,000 finder’s fee from the insurance company Lloyd’s of London.
