Make July brighter with an exciting ensemble stitched from our first collection. Add a pop of color using Salis Sunshine, a bright yellow, medium-weight cotton jersey knit. We paired it with an exceptional knit from Chicago fashion designer Andria Lieu. Vibrant watercolor flowers float atop a textured knit with little peek-a-boo holes offering added interest. Salis Tropics has nearly equal stretch lengthwise and crosswise, so you can orient the stripes however you please. This knit pairs well with all the solids in this collection.

Salis Collection

The theme for our Transition catalog is.....salt.What?! you may ask. Fear not, dear sewist, for we go way beyond the culinary and delve into history, with a pinch of wanderlust and a dash of therapy. We all need salt for our physical survival. Our bodies require 500mg daily of this mineral for proper muscle and nerve function, nutrient absorption, protecting our organs and tissues, lubricating our joints, and balancing our internal water and minerals. We can taste it in our bodies when we sweat and cry. Jews ceremoniously dip hard-boiled eggs and bitter herbs in salt water during Passover to remember the sweat and tears of their ancestors who were enslaved in Egypt. Ingesting too little, or too much, can have ill effects on our physical health. An ancient Chinese ritual suicide involved swallowing large amounts of this innocuous food staple. Toxic overconsumption can lead to a condition called hypernatremia which involves immense thirst, weakness, nausea, lack of appetite, confusion, muscle spasms, and brain bleeds. Yet breathing salt air and taking salt baths are purported to be beneficial to us. Not all salt grains are created equal. Foodies will be quick to point out the myriad options available, from flakes to crystals, extracted from subterranean mines or salt water, with flavors and iodine added for good measure. This mineral, found the world over and so commonplace today, was once used as a currency and a status symbol of nobility. The Latin for salt is sal which is the root of the word for salary Sal also means wit. Whatever you read in this catalog should be taken cum grano salis - with a grain of salt (or wit...).

Feel the softness and drape of Salis Coral (page 3) and dream up the garment you will sew for yourself. We plucked this color from our regular stock selection of Sofie Ponte knits because the color blends beautifully with all the Salis prints. We recommend you whip up a cardigan to wear over the Salis Garden, a cheerful Bulgari knit (the background image here). Lightweight, soft face, sweet floral print, great price - what’s not to love?

Tailor slacks, walking shorts, and a skirt from Salis Teal and you will give yourself the gift of options when the seasons change. This all-cotton twill has a brushed face and is very durable while being on the lighter side. If you are a snowbird or live in warmer climates, construct a jacket to wear through the winter to complete your outfits.

The twill looks smashing paired with Salis Blossoms. We have really been fortunate to see so many beautiful cotton lawn prints this year, and the subtle coral tonal quality of this will surely make it very popular. Whip up a cap sleeve top in an hour, wear it for years.

Flavor Collection

Let’s cover the basics first and dip into the flavor aspect. How many types of salt do you have in your house right now? Table salt is highly processed to remove impurities and trace minerals, and it is ground fine to dissolve quickly. In 1924 Iodine was added to prevent common illnesses such as goiter and hypothyroidism. It also contains calcium silicate to prevent the grains from clumping together - great at the table, but not if you are using salt for food preservation (more on that later). You might also have Kosher Salt and Sea Salt. They look the same, and they both involve evaporating salt water to leave behind the crystals, but Kosher salt comes from underground deposits as opposed to oceans and seas. Both are less “salty tasting” than table salt and can be used whole or put through a grinder. When boiling water for cooking pasta, Italians put enough sea salt in the water to make it taste like the Mediterranean. The shorter the cooking time, the heavier-handed you can be with the salt. Popular with foodies is fleur de sel (flower of salt), a snowflake-like crystal of unrefined sea salt harvested from small seaside inlet pools on calm, sunny days. Sprinkle a tiny bit of this expensive seasoning onto your food at the time you serve, like a garnish, or you will overpower your food with the large flakes that are slow to dissolve. Millennials love pink Himalayan salt for cooking as well as for home decor (salt lamps, wall panels, and small planks for serving appetizers). Originating in Pakistan at the foothills of the Himalayas, this mined salt looks pink because of trace amounts of rust. It is safe to eat and looks very cool in a grinder.

Dana Marie #1059 “Retr0” - top Liesl + Co “Peckham Trousers”

There are nine vibrant textiles to tempt you in our Flavor collection. Begin with Flavor Palette, a visually intriguing knit from Andria Lieu. For summer, sew a tank to wear with bright pink shorts. For autumn, make a cardigan or sweater set. For winter, whip up a cowl neck sweater to wear with a jacket to work. All year chic!

If you love color blocking or piecework, choose Flavor Ribs as a secondary fabric to make the light green of the designer knit pop. Flavor Ribs also stands alone as a youthful knit top. Enjoy the decadent feeling of the modal (high-end rayon) against your skin.

As a bottom-weight for all the fabrics in this collection, we present Flavor Suiting, the fuchsia color of our Felix Stretch Gabardine Collection. If you have never worked with this fabric, treat yourself to its wonderful body, plus elegant and heavy drape. Dry cleaning is recommended by the manufacturer so the garment looks great through the years.

Flavor Meadow offers the lightweight qualities of a cotton lawn with the softness of a polyester peachskin and some stretch for built-in ease. At $5.99 per yard, your toughest choice will be which top you will sew from it.

Flavor Bold is a “must-have” for your wardrobe. We love the arrangement and variety of colors that look painted onto an all-way stretch lace from Andria Lieu. Wear it as a short-sleeve top over a bandeau, or underline it with one of our rayon jersey knits to create a tank or tank dress. Use the scalloped borders as design elements for hems.

Flavor Pinky stretch micro-twill is durable enough to wear as walking shorts, a skirt, or summer slacks, and it is lightweight enough to wear all year as a classic button-down top. The pink works so well with all the prints in this collection, as well as the rib knit and the upcoming cotton twill. You can have a whole new wardrobe sewn from this collection alone!

This print features linear streaks of color crisscrossing in various shades of intensity. When choosing a sewing pattern, keep the lines simple to really showcase the print.

The second of three cotton twills in this issue, Flavor Azure provides comfort and color. Why not try sewing a popular jumper style, like Closet Core’s Blanca Flight Suit?

Mines Collection

Below the earth’s surface lies a huge depository of salt from ancient underground seabeds that have nearly completely dried up. Laborers pick away at the deposits in much the same way as miners who collect coal and minerals. Fracking is even used in some places. The ancient mine in Hallstatt, Austria, is over 7000 years old, and less than two percent of its tunnels have been explored. Also in Austria is the Altaussee Salt Mine which gained notoriety at the end of World War II when the allied forces’ “Monuments Men” rescued thousands of works of art that had been secreted away by the Nazis, intended to be shown in Hitler’s Fürermuseum in Linz. Local miners helped thwart the destruction of the art by removing the eight large crates marked “Marble - Do Not Drop” which actually contained massive bombs. As with any subterranean excavation, there is a risk of a cave collapsing. In 1993, miners in the Zanjan province of Iran unearthed an exceptionally well-preserved human head complete with hair, beard, and earring. Additional bodies and parts were uncovered, and through archeology and carbon dating, researchers surmise that 1750 years ago the mine collapsed, and the salt preserved the “Saltmen of Zanjan”, their clothes, food, and animals, in pristine condition like mummies. In Eastern Europe, the Wieliczka Salt Mine is home to the “Underground Salt Cathedral of Poland.” Created over 700 years ago, this UNESCO World Heritage Site reaches over 1000 feet below the earth’s surface and is a huge tourist attraction. Dozens of sculptures and reliefs have been carved into the edifice, all the mine’s surfaces are salt (with some wood added for stability), chandeliers adorn some areas with large salt crystals instead of glass, four chapels were created in which the miners would pray, and there is a wonderful subterranean lake. For a fee, you can spend an evening in the lower-level spa breathing in the salt air.

We break away from the bold colors of the Flavor Collection and transition now to softer tones, beginning with Mines Sand, a worsted cotton bottom-weight. Reminiscent of a Bedford Cord with lightly ribbed face, trust us when we say you will want to order several yards in order to sew slacks and a jacket for you and your favorite person. The color is an ideal, all-year neutral, so you will have plenty of opportunities to wear your new creations.

Swirling lines and flowers in shades of blue with accents of pink, yellow, and pale green create a soothing, undulating print we call Mines Catalina. Knit from cotton and rayon, this soft and lightweight cloth begs to be sewn into any number of tops. Get a little extra to make some loose shorts or PJ pants for lounging around the house.

The first of two shimmering suitings in this collection, Mines Blue Links is a lovely reversible stretch-woven. Use the reverse for a contrast collar and cuffs or as contrast side panels for a Princess seamed dress. ProTip: line your garment with Mines Sky (page 13). Mines Pink Links is the rosy version of this fabric. Sew these as you would any woven fabric, and enjoy the built-in ease the subtle stretch provides (cut across the grain).

Mines Optic will look lovely as a dress or top to wear with both of the shimmer stretch suitings. This reversible fabric is ideal for self-contrasting fashion. It can also be used as a contrast element to the suitings in a jacket or dress, such as a shawl collar and cuffs.

Flats Collection

In prehistoric times, more of the earth was covered with water, including inland saltwater lakes, like the Great Salt Lake in Utah. As the water evaporated, or the feeding rivers changed course, large swaths of salt deserts were left behind, referred to as salt flats. The 40 sq mi Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah, just west of Salt Lake City, ranks among the smallest in the world but is one of the most famous. Each summer the top crust hardens, making the surface feel like it’s been paved - perfect for driving vehicles wickedly fast. No doubt you have seen this desert-scape in any number of car commercials and movies. Speaking of movies, Luke Skywalker’s home planet of Tatooine was filmed at the salt flats of Chott el Djerid in southern Tunisia. Nearly 60 times larger than Bonneville, these flats used to be part of the Mediterranean Sea but now form part of the Sahara Desert. A chott is a lake that dries through the summer, so each winter a lake appears, and the minerals cause the water to look white, green, or purple. In Bolivia, Salar de Uyuni in the Andes Mountains spans over 3100 sq mi. It’s so large and flat that, according to NASA, scientists “use the landscape to calibrate the satellite imagers and altimeters.” When the rains come, the water pools on the calm surface, forming the “world’s largest mirror.”

Swooshes of Colors Splattered on a Black Floral Stretch Mesh Polyester/Acrylic/Spandex blend. 60” wide. Cold wash, dry low. 30% crosswise stretch. 60% lengthwise stretch.

$799

Flats Dots is a spectacular design we picked up from Andria Lieu and it deserves an entry here. Beautiful diagonal swaths of purple, gold, tan, pale blue, and off-white dots are printed atop a floral stretch lace. Sew this the same way you would a lightweight knit. If you underline this fabric with a dark color, you won’t see the floral lace pattern as pronounced as if you wear the lace over a lighter color. Try something new, and create a lace top you can tie or fasten loosely in front, and wear it over a dress sewn from Flats Regal (on the next page).

A superb option for all-year fashions, incorporate Flats Regal stretch micro-twill into your wardrobe. In the summer, wear this beauty as shorts or a short skirt. In the spring and autumn, toss this on as Capris or slacks. In the winter, wear it as a classic buttondown shirt over a warm knit top.

This entire collection is very transitional, it will come down to how you sew and style your garments. Flats Exotic is a polyester

“linen look” weave featuring black and white fronds mingled with tiny tile designs in raspberry, mango, and lime. For summer, coordinate with white and lime colors, and for autumn tone things down with purples and oranges. Choose a sewing pattern with simple lines and use your nap layout. This fabric looks fantastic as palazzo pants!

How to Care For Your Fabrics

The care instructions in this catalog are a conservative path, but not an absolute. There is no one size fits all for fabric care because of all the variables, such as hard versus soft water, well and septic versus municipal water, washers with and without a center aggitator, dryers that have a no-heat option, etc.

One supplier would have everyone dry clean every fabric, but for many of you this is not feasable.

Here are some general guides. You can always use your swatch to test how a fabric will react to washing and drying. Test wash the way you plan to wash your finished garments - this will remove any sizing and shrinkage prior to cutting/sewing.

Pro-Tip: Set your washer for an extra long spin cycle to remove excess water, then toss in the dryer on low heat for 5 minutes before hanging or laying flat. This minimizes wrinkles, and helps fibers last longer.

We named this Liverpool crepe knit print Flats Dusk because of the muted secondary colors including amber, apricot, plum, and orchid, which make up the flower and leaves strewn against a melange of ocean blues. The medium weight of the knit, coupled with its subtle texture and all-over print, make this a fantastic option for sewing princess-seamed knit dresses and tops.

We chose Flats Suiting because the color blends beautifully with the prints. This is actually the Antique Gold color from our Felix Stretch Gabardine Collection. The heavy drape looks stylish as flared pants, and the stretch of this woven suiting provides built-in ease should you choose to sew a jacket or sheath.

Drawn to texture and color for her modern, sculptural fashion designs fashion designer Andria Lieu uses a combination of simple design lines with sculptural techniques. Choose a pattern for lightweight knits that you can ruche or gather when sewing Flats Zigzag.

We already offered you the antique gold stretch gabardine as one bottom-weight option to coordinate with the zigzag, but for you knit lovers we reached for the sky (color, that is) from our Classic Ponte di Roma Collection. The weight, content, stretch, and hand of Flats Sky are nearly identical to a high-end brand we carry.

Our last 100% cotton twill entry for this issue is Curing Hunter. Classic, all-year wearability, this might just become your favorite slacks or heavier weight workshirt to wear over a cotton top when when the evening turns chilly and a jacket is overkill.

Really, these first three fabrics are easily wearable by everyone. It’s all how you choose to style them. Curing Liberty features a small floral print on a blouse-weight cotton poplin. The leaves coordinate with the green twill, and the red accents in the pale pink flowers blend with Curing Ruby, a lightweight stretch-woven poplin. Choose the ruby to wear as a skirt, shorts, or lightweight slacks, with any of the prints in this collection, or style it as a classic shirt with floral accents in the cuffs and collar.

Curing Collection

Oh, we could have gone two ways with a collection named “Curing.” We are saving the information on healing properties for our last collection and focusing right now on preservation. Salt is a prolific dehydrator, and it has been used for thousands of years in preserving things for later use, such as food to eat, bodies for ritual mummification, and hides for making clothes and furniture. Bad bacteria can’t grow in inhospitable conditions, such as a lack of moisture and too much salt. Meats are rubbed or encased with salt to draw out blood and moisture, break down muscle tissue, and add flavor, leaving a more tender and tasty dining experience, sometimes extending shelf life. Some meats are completely covered in a salt cocoon, like Scandinavian salmon for gravlax and Italian pork leg for prosciutto. When Renaissance exploration ships would set sail for months, salted meats were stored in barrels below deck, away from seawater. We’ve all heard of corned beefcorning is an Old English term for the larger, coarser salt pellets used in preservation. Dry-cured meats used to be a grey color, until the addition of sodium nitrate in the 19th century produced a more red color which people quite liked. You can purchase “curing salt” which is pink, but should not be confused with the pink Himalayan salt. Wet-curing, or brining, involves adding a lot of salt and seasoning to water into which food is submerged for storage or marinading. It’s like pickling with salt instead of vinegar and is still in practice around the world by people who wish to preserve homegrown vegetables through the winter.

We featured Curing Meadow in navy in our Fall 2022 catalog (VF225-30) and had to re-order due its popularity. We hope you will love this color combination just as much. It has the subtle linen-look texture coupled with the drape of a blouseweight rayon poplin, so you can easily style this as Palazzo pants, an A-line dress, a tunic, and so much more! Wear it with slacks and a jacket tailored from Curing Suiting, our red stretch cotton gabardine entry. We sell this for $11.99 in our retail store, but we are offering it at a discount during the subscriber-only shopping period.

Undulating dots of red, gold, stone, greyish-blue, and olive are printed on a lightweight black double-knit we call Curing Waves. There is a faint animal print design knit into the face of the base cloth - you really need to look for it. The reverse is solid black, making this Andria Lieu print an ideal choice for sewing garments where the reverse shows.

Curing Stone perfectly compliments the texture of the waves, and picks up on the pale cream dots. Although this is a Liverpool crepe knit, it is not from our basic stock collection, so order soon if you like it - it’s sure to sell out.

Idiom Collection

In English we have several idioms pertaining to salt, but do you know their origins? Ancient Romans held salt in high esteem, as essential as the sun. Soldiers were paid in salt (sharing the root sal with salarium, as in salary). Someone who was lazy or disengaged was “not worth his salt.” Until the 18th century, seating at a long banquet table was a matter of prominence, with nobility and the rich at one end, and the laborers, priests, and more prominent servants at the other. Salt was placed mid-way at the banquet table, with the posh people seated “above the salt.” You’ve heard of someone “rubbing salt in the wound” as an idiom for making a bad situation worse (shortened to “rub it in”). It stems from the centuries-old tradition of treating wounds with salt as an anti-septic. The sting of the salt was sometimes much more of a shock than the initial gash. “Back to the salt mines,” an idiom still used today meaning a return to tedious and repetitive work, originated in the salt mines of Eastern Europe (and forced labor mines of Siberia). How many of you have spilled salt and then tossed a pinch over your left shoulder? This superstition goes back centuries: if you spill something so coveted as salt, you must be acting recklessly under an evil influence, so thwart the devil by blinding him with salt in the eye (the devil likes to hang out over your left shoulder). According to Time Magazine, “The spilling of salt was considered ominous, a portent of doom.” Take a close look at Leonardo da Vinci’s painting The Last Supper and you’ll see a spilled salt cellar. Why would he bother painting spilled salt in such a monumental scene? It’s right in front of Judas Iscariot. Very clever, Leo.

Therapy Collection

Have you ever had a sore throat and were told to gargle with salt water? Have you used a nasal lavage to clear out your gunky nose? Saline, or salted water, has been used for a couple thousand years as a curative to remove impurities and begin the healing process. Scandinavians, Romans, Greeks, and Tribal Nations of the Americas have all embraced bathing in thermal mineral waters known as hot springs. Tens of thousands of people flock annually to the Dead Sea in Israel where the water is so dense with minerals people just float on the surface effortlessly. If you can’t make it to the Middle East, order a bucket of Dead Sea Salt to pour into your bath at home. Known as balneotherapy, bathing in salt water (or mineral rich mud), is said to help detoxify the body and draw out impurities, as well as help the skin heal. Essentially, its a quick brine for our bodies. Speleotherapy is also a popular curative in the form of breathing in salted air (remember the Himalayan salt lamps and wall panels we mentioned earlier that the millennials love?). In the mid-1800s Dr. Feliks Boczkowski, discovered that the salt miners in his native Poland did not have the same respiratory and lung ailments that afflicted men who mined other things, like coal, minerals, and gems. Now people pay to spend time in salt caves just to breath in the air, including the spa deep in the Wieliczka Mine in Poland.
