UAP Collection
Autumn approaches, the trees will soon drop their leaves in the north, and children make their requests for Halloween costumes. Will there be an uptick in people dressing up as Martians this year? Yes, the theme for this month’s catalog collections is influenced by the recent hearings on Capitol Hill regarding Unidentified Anomalous Phenomena (UAP). This updated term replaces the decades-old term Unidentified Flying Object (UFO). On July 26, the National Security Subcommittee held a hearing regarding UAP as it pertains to our national security and public safety. Witnesses gave accounts of the numerous reports made by military and commercial pilots regarding things flying around at 10 times the speed of sound, making quick turns, climbing to high altitudes, and much more. They attest that humans could not survive the G-forces involved with these aerial maneuvers. Furthermore, pilots flying over the oceans remarked on bubbling water displacement with seemingly no visible source. Declassified videos from the military show objects darting around, visible via infrared imaging, indicating the objects were really there and not refractions of light. In 2022, under the National Defence Authorization Act, the All Domain Resolution Office was created, and they collected 171 uncharacterized UAP reports “That appear to have demonstrated unusual flight characteristics of performance capabilities.” The Capitol Hill hearing lasted three hours, but reflects nearly a century of curiosity: Are UAPs advanced technology from other countries that are spying on us, or something otherworldly? In this catalog, we will explore humankind’s fascination with the unknown, extraterrestrial, and magical flying objects, witnessed over the centuries, and how science continues to question what’s out there.

Did you think UAP Plush was a corduroy? Look again! It’s a ribbed stretch velvet and the first of three colors in this issue. We were thrilled to find them all. The golden-sand color works with all of the fabrics in this collection, and we especially love how it pulls out the golden tones of the UAP Grid as well as brightens up UAP Paisley. The ribs run selvage to selvage, and it is a nap fabric, but the amazing stretch will allow you to reorient the ribs so you can wear them vertically if you prefer.
UAP Paisley brings the rich, earthen tones of the autumn change-ofseason color scheme. We envisage a sueded knit dress worn with a ribbed velvet jacket, as well as a long paisley skirt paired with a wonderful knit top made from UAP Ginger. This lovely medium-weight ponte knit has a supple hand and a soft face. For those of you who love Judy Kessinger from FitNice, this fabric is just like the Sophia she mentions in her books and videos.

“Simple Twist of Fate” - jacket
One day a little girl came up to our sequin collection and exclaimed, “My favorite color is sparkle!” Yours will be too, once you have worn your new top or dress created from Europa Sparkle. This has been a best-seller in our retail store. Rich plum velvet provides the backdrop to a plum paillette harlequin design outlined with tiny amber sequins. Prepare for holiday festivities now by sewing a Europa Amber dress and sparkle jacket, or whip up Hollywood pants and a sparkle top. This crepe-back-satin is reversible, making it perfect for self-contrasting designs.
Europa Plush is the second ribbed velvet, this time in a lovely plum that blends well with the sparkle as a banding or knit slacks. We love the combina tion of the amber and the ribs for a divine autumnal fashion statement. Check it out on page 8.

Looking back over the millennia, before we began launching satellites into Earth’s orbit (and watching them come crashing down again), other things prompted humans to ask, “What the heck was that?” Although astronomers could predict such things as an eclipse or yearly meteor showers, other spectacles left them baffled. A comet with a front fireball and flaming tail, a lone meteor breaking through the atmosphere and falling to earth with a sizzle, and meteorological occurrences for which humans had no explanation like sun dogs, rainbows, and lenticular clouds (more on those later). In the skies above Hungary in 919 CE “...an object like a flaming torch was seen in the sky, together with spheres, which flew over giving out a brighter light than the stars.” In 1290, William of Newburgh reported one such event in Yorkshire, England. “The abbot and monks were at a meal when a flat, round, shining, silvery object flew over the abbey and caused the utmost terror.” A 1299 Chronicle of the Archbishops of Trier in Germany reports a strange occurrence on a misty, foggy night. A large object, the size of the moon, hung overhead for an hour, then disappeared, then two more came and went in an instant, followed by a third object which appeared and then darted off. Michaelangelo reported seeing a “Triangular light with three tails of different colors.” According to Jaques Vallee in a recent book, Michaelangelo painted the object, but the painting did not survive. In April 1561, there was a mass sighting of an in-flight battle over Nuremberg, Germany. People on the street reported seeing “hundreds of spheres, cylinders, and other odd-shaped objects that moved erratically overhead.” A woodcut illustration of the battle was printed depicting what Ilse Von Jacobi reported as globes, rods, and blood-red crosses, all fighting vehemently for over an hour as dawn broke, then fell to the earth, exhausted, in flame and smoke. Then, “something like a black spear, very long and thick, sighted; the shaft pointed to the east and the point pointed west.” A similar battle of black spheres occurred over Basil, Switzerland in 1566, witnessed by hundreds of onlookers.

Toning things down, create a tunic or Kimono from Europa Reverie to wear through the spring. The softness of the rayon, along with its light drape and elegant design, makes this a winner. We picked up on the warm tones in some of the flowers and leaves when we sought out Europa Maroon. This stretch-woven twill is durable enough for lightweight pants and skirts in warmer winter cities and has enough body to be worn as a classic button-down shirt up north. For those of you opting for the shirt, top it with a cardigan sewn from Europa Roswell, a fantastically soft knit in muted heathered grey and maroon from designer Andria Lieu. The pros: This double-knit is reversible. The cons: we don’t have a lot of it, so order early if you love it.

Asia Collection
Similar aerial phenomena were documented in China and Japan. In 967 CE over Japan, numerous objects flying in a triangular formation were seen moving from east to west under the rain clouds. Less than fifty years later, the Director-General of the Japanese Royal Guard witnessed two stars fly toward each other, then each produced several smaller stars that darted around before returning to their respective mother star. On October 27, 1180, fishermen in Japan reported seeing a flying saucer (they said “earthenware vessel,” but same thing, right?). The “unusual shining object” traveled northeast from a mountain in Kii province, “changed its direction and vanished below the horizon, leaving a luminous trail.” China also has several written accounts of unexplained astrological phenomena. Around 900 CE, in the New Book of the Tang, there are a couple of reports of “star-like objects” - reportedly over 500 square meters - with pointed heads and cylindrical rear emitting red-orange flames, moving in a snakelike fashion, accompanied by many small stars that quickly disappeared. One of the eeriest descriptions comes from Haoding Hebei, China in June 1277. Poet Liu Ying writes “Event Seen at Dawn,” recording three bright objects in the southern sky. Two disappeared, but the one that remained had five lights underneath, and a dome-shape on top. It began to “zigzag, like a dead leaf.” As the object zooms away, a flat, oval object is seen falling from the sky, engulfed in flames. There are many more such sightings reported over the northern hemisphere over the last two millennia.

Presenting Asia Plush, the last piece in our trio of ribbed stretch velvets. All-way stretch, low luster, good body, soft hand - choose this fabric as a foundation in your capsules. From Andria Lieu comes Asia Dots, a playful knit with tiny lines in black, tan, and mauve, bespeckled with puffy black dots of varying sizes. As a bonus, we are also offering VF23545 Asia Stripes Mauve, which is the same fabric but with black stripes instead of dots, and VF235-46 Asia Stripes Green (see pictures on page 13). We couldn’t swatch the stripes due to low quantity levels, so contact us quickly if you want yardage or a swatch. The mauve dots and the mauve stripe pair beautifully with Asia Mellow, our Classic Ponte de Roma Double Knit. Craft a mauve cardigan to wear over a dots top and plush pants, or structure a long straight mauve skirt to pair with the dots top and a long ribbed vest.

We love Asia Classique (page 11) which looks like a smart wool tweed but it’s all cotton. Slacks, jacket, vest, skirt, dress - sew many options! It’s also an excellent choice for fashion overalls, like Closet Core’s “Jenny” or Folkwear’s “Rosie the Riveter.” Pair the cotton tweed with a knit top from Asia Nitro and a cardigan sewn from our amazing plush knit called Asia Comfy. Chenille yarns in a melange of pale plum, moss, gray, and black give the impression of a heavy fabric, but really this is lightweight and soft to the touch. For chilly evenings, create a reversible wrap to toss over your shoulders. Instead of looking for a muted tone of lilac, we punched things up and chose Asia Nitro. The warm, dark plum is an easy color to wear, regardless of age or skin tone.

Structure Collection
There are many structures on earth that, over the centuries, people have speculated were created by “others” - beings not from this world. Stonehenge is the most famous such structure. Thought to have been erected 4000-5000 years ago near Salisbury, England, the monolithic structure still baffles people. Some of the stones are over 50,000 tons, so how were they quarried, carried hundreds of miles, and erected, during such primitive times? Swiss author Erich von Däniken wonders if the circular structure represented the solar system and served as a landing pad. Turning to South America, the Incas are credited with building Sacsayhuaman, a monumental fortress where megalithic stones are precisely fit together like a jigsaw puzzle, without the use of any mortar, seemingly fused together so that nothing can fit between the stones, not even a sheet of paper. An aerial view of the circular structure and its radiating walls may have influenced George Lucas’ design of the Superlaser of the Death Star in Star Wars. Archeologists are still debating the engineering of the massive structure that has withstood two millennia of earthquakes, but conspiracy theorists swear it was built with the help of alien technology. Also in Peru are the Nazca lines, a series of very precise geoglyphs - circles, lines, zigzags, and even plant and animal shapes - that are carved into a desert plateau. Some of the straight lines are over 30 miles long, while some of the depicted plants and animals reach up to 1200 feet long. These first gained notoriety in the 1930s when their precision and expansiveness were first viewed from airplanes. Who would have viewed them prior to human flight? There are many more structures around the world that keep archeologists guessing, and conspiracy theorists blogging.

Autumn’s arrival brings to mind falling leaves, crisp winds, and layering garments. Wrap yourself in the softness of Structure Comfy with a sweater set or tunic knit top. Keep your off-cuts and piece them together into a long, narrow scarf as an accent. The heathered brown looks perfect with Structure Suiting, an all-wool suiting that begs to be tailored into office attire, as well as casual separates, and a fall jacket. Order during the Subscriber’s Priority Shopping Period to save $10 per yard. We are not always able to find wool suiting in the quantity we need for the catalog, but we were fortunate to receive three wool suitings for this issue. Don’t think of “suiting” as being a business suit fabric exclusively - these woolens are ideal for fashionable wardrobe options whenever a medium-weight woven is needed. Tailor some high-waisted, wide-legged Hollywood pants from the suiting, and top it with a tunic-length wrap top of Structure Chic. Packed with texture, this drapeable knit also features laser-cut semi-circles with a soft mesh backing to give a peek-a-boo effect. It’s smart and sophisticated, with a hint of playfulness.

How to Care For Your Fabrics
The care instructions in this catalog are a conservative path, but not an absolute. There is no one size fits all for fabric care because of all the variables, such as hard versus soft water, well and septic versus municipal water, washers with and without a center aggitator, dryers that have a no-heat option, etc.
One supplier would have everyone dry clean every fabric, but for many of you this is not feasable.
Here are some general guides. You can always use your swatch to test how a fabric will react to washing and drying. Test wash the way you plan to wash your finished garments - this will remove any sizing and shrinkage prior to cutting/sewing.
Pro-Tip: Set your washer for an extra long spin cycle to remove excess water, then toss in the dryer on low heat for 5 minutes before hanging or laying flat. This minimizes wrinkles, and helps fibers last longer.

This collection combines muted tones in wonderful textures, enlivened by two rich teal solids. Begin with Nature Imposter, a unique knit made to look like embossed leather. If you love sewing Ponte knits, substitute this for a high-fashion look.
Sewing a stretch-woven is no different than sewing a woven fabric, except there is the added benefit of built-in ease from the cross-grain stretch. Nature Felix is the teal option from our perennial favorite Felix Collection, available in several colors. Tailor teal slacks to provide a handsome base for a new top created from Nature Intrigue Loosely knit, mingling colors in neutrals, teal, and black, with a hint of shimmer, this designer fabric has some wonderful fashion options. First, the obvious knit top which we recommend wearing over a tank made from one of the Modal knits in this collection. Second, craft a long, thin scarf you can wrap around your neck twice and let it end at your knees.

Meteorologists have used science to explain many ancient and medieval UAP sightings. Here are a few rare, naturally occurring events that may have startled onlookers in bygone days. Sun Dogs appear around the sun, like a halo with bright balls to the left and the right of the sun, seemingly affixed to the halo. These are caused by light refracting off atmospheric ice crystals. But the balls of light don’t dance around or make sudden movements. Ball lightning is a phenomenon of small (less than 1 meter) hissing orbs of electricity during thunderstorms that levitate and move randomly above ground, accompanied by the smell of sulfur. In 1809, The HMS Warren Hastings, a British ship made of iron, reportedly saw “Three distinct balls of fire” come from the sky, with a sulfuric stench, killing at least one crewman and lighting the main mast on fire when the ship was struck. Scientists are still puzzled by ball lightning, as it is very rare. Lenticular clouds, to the untrained eye, could look like flying saucers. These appear most often near mountains or large hills, sitting stationary, with what appear to be discs of meringue stacked one on top of the other, growing in size from one disk to the next. Fata Morganas are visual illusions or mirages that can make objects appear as though they are floating in the sky. Seen often in the Strait of Messina off Sicily, the name Fata Morgana is Italian for Morgan le Fay (Morgan the fairy), the sister to legendary King Arthur, she learned magic from the books of Merlin and became a great soceress. Did you know that every day the earth’s atmosphere is bombarded with 100 tons of meteoroids - “fragments of dust and gravel and sometimes even big rocks.” Larger objects will burn like a fireball as they enter Earth’s atmosphere, and are referred to as shooting stars when seen in the night sky.

Nature Mauve is one of two Modal jersey knits in this collection. The extra processing needed to convert the beech tree pulp into the weavable fibers creates a super soft finished product. Choose this whenever a lightweight knit with lots of stretch is needed. We love how the color works well with the Intrigue, as well as how it blends with our next fabric.
Nature Romance features subtle, swirling undertones of moss and dark bluegrey, topped with a Baroque design in pale mauve and cream. If you are conservative in nature, a simple knit top or boxy hip-length sweater will suffice.

Tropical wools can be worn all year due to their lighter weight and breathability. Nature Pinstripe’s neutral tones add sophistication to any wardrobe. Sew a long pinstripe skirt or slacks to pair with a ruched knit top from the taupe modal knit, then toss on a cardigan made from the Baroque knit and you will have a super sharp ensemble for work and for dinner with friends.

Look at Satellite Sharp and what do you see? Sport coat? Pencil skirt? Slacks and a vest? Tailor them all with this wonderful woolen. Every three inches there is a very subtle green thread in the weft, and a very faint blue thread in the warp. The rich tan color provides a strong foil to the fuzzy zigzags of Satellite Warmth. Whether you craft a cardi, a hoodie, a wrap, or a knit sweater coat, one thing is for sure: this plush sweater knit from Andria Lieu will excite you when dressing for the cold days ahead. To enhance the binky-soft quality of the sweater knit we chose Satellite Onyx, a double-brushed ITY knit with ample all-way stretch. Sew a simple knit top, a mock turtle neck, and a wrap knit top to give yourself some basic wardrobe options.

Satellite Collection
Mother Nature doesn’t have an exclusive on creating things that people view as other-worldly. A downed “weather” balloon is said to have sparked the UFO craze in 1947 near Roswell, New Mexico. The US government insists it was sending “high-altitude balloons into the ionosphere, hoping to monitor Russian nuclear tests.” Beginning in the mid-20th century, human-made satellites were being sent into Earth’s orbit to take photos, transmit signals for television and telecommunications, and observe earthly happenings from weather to war. If you sit out on a clear night, away from city lights (called light pollution), you will be able to see tiny lights traveling across the sky slowly in a single direction, seemingly among the stars. Watching one of NASA’s space shuttles in the 1980s pass overhead was scary if you weren’t aware of the flight path ahead of time. The fly-over was bright, bold, super fast and seemed as close as an airplane. These are easy things to explain, however, at the hearing on Capitol Hill in July, it was clear that not everything has an easy explanation. In 2003 at the Vandenberg Air Force Base in California, a large group of Boeing contractors observed a “100-yard red square approach from the ocean and hover at low altitude over one of the launch facilities.” It remained for 45 seconds before darting off over the mountains. Two similar events occurred after that. In 2004, a “Tic Tac” shaped object captured on a military infrared camera by a navy fighter jet off the USS Nimitz moved at super high speeds, and in ways that conventional technology can’t replicate…at least, not that anyone is telling the public. That is why reporting of UAPs has become a National Security issue. After shooting down Chinese balloons over the US this past year, the government wants to know if these balloons and “Tic Tacs” are spy tech from other countries and if someone has created something beyond America’s current known capabilities.

The look of suede with the ease of a knit - that’s what you’ll enjoy when you wear Satellite Camel. Sew a long skirt and long vest, a knit wrap dress, or leggings. Whatever you choose to make, enhance your style by adding Satellite Botanique as a top, tunic, or scarf. If it looks familiar, we featured the same print in yellow with green on black in our Transition catalog. Although it feels like a challis, this elegant rayon is a lightweight poplin weave. Choose it when your sewing pattern calls for a lightweight woven with drape.

Signals Collection
Scientists have not completely ruled out the possibility of extraterrestrial life forms. The SETI Institute in Silicon Valley is a non-profit with a mission “to lead humanity’s quest to understand the origins and prevalence of life and intelligence in the universe and share that knowledge with the world.” Located near NASA’s Ames Research Center, SETI (Search of ExtraTerrestrial Intelligence) searches for and records signals from space. Some signals are rooted in pulsars, like radio or X-rays emitting from a degenerating neutron star. Carl Sagan once quipped, “The universe is a pretty big place. If it’s just us, it seems like an awful waste of space.” Think about it: the earth is .0003% of our solar system, which rests inside the Milky Way galaxy. “Our Sun is just one of about 200 billion stars in our galaxy,” and those are just the suns, not the planets that orbit them. There may be over 100,000,000,000 galaxies in the universe, each packed with billions of planets and suns, according to NASA. The “observable universe” holds roughly 30-billion-trillion stars, and is an estimated 1.9x10^21 times larger than Earth. That’s just the observable universe....there’s more out there. Can there be life on other planets? Life can be microscopic organisms or super-intelligent beings. We don’t know if there is anything else out there. Yet.
