We open this catalog with the bold red seen in some of the most iconic race cars. Our first fabric is red hot and sure to go fast. Formula Scarlet sueded scuba knit begs to be sewn into a striking dress, a pencil skirt, a swing coat, and sumptuous slacks. The color brings boldness to the simplest garments. Pair it with the next two fabrics for a chic ensemble.
Feel the luxurious hand of Formula Couture. What is it inviting you to create? Draw inspiration from the fashions of Hugo Boss, which used a nearly identical weave for recent fashion collections. This yarn-woven black and white houndstooth is sparked with red in a simple plaid for a pop of excitement. Tailor classic French couture looks or style a retro 1950s spring coat for timeless wardrobe options.
We found a delightful blouse-weight black Tencel rayon in Formula Onyx to pair with all of the fabrics in this collection, providing you with endless mix-and-match options. Tailor a black blouse, a red suede skirt, and a houndstooth jacket for starters.

Formula Collection
Ground speeds in excess of 200 mph. Cockpit G-forces up to 6.5 while cornering. A Formula 1 race car is the fastest on the planet. Already well established as the world’s most popular motorsport, Formula 1 (F1 for short) is now the fastest growing motorsport in the USA. Although F1 racing began in the 1920s, it wasn’t until 1950 that the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) was formed to standardize the rules and regulations. Unlike NASCAR,whose race cars look like souped-up family sedans, F1 cars are “open-wheel single-seaters”--four giant tires with a tiny cockpit nestled among them. The FIA mandates a set of regulations - the “formula” - which must be adhered to, but teams can tweak things outside the scope of the formula. Year to year, the changes are relatively minor, but sometimes a major change is made. In 2014, cars switched from using just fossil fuels to turbo-hybrids, requiring major adjustments for all the engineers, designers, and drivers. Another major task for these constructors came in 2022 when the FIA declared all cars must use non-fossil fuels beginning in 2026 as the FIA works towards their goal of the sport becoming carbon net zero by 2030. This year’s calendar features 24 race weekends in 21 countries on six continents. Some events are held at dedicated motorsport racetracks. Others, like the famous Monaco Grand Prix and the new Las Vegas Grand Prix, run circuits through city streets. Buckle up while we give you a glimpse into the exhilarating world of Formula 1.

Red Ribbon-lace Mesh
100% Polyester. 58” wide. Dry clean, or delicate wash & dry. 45% lengthwise stretch - cut across the grain for best stretch.
$799
As a delightful transitional option, we present Formula Blanca, a stretch poly-rayon pinwale corduroy in winter white. Choose this for making lightweight spring jackets, skirts, and sheath dresses.
We chose Formula Ruby as a base layer for Formula Riviera because we wanted to give you a fabric that is more substantial than a lining, has stretch, and is priced well. Formula Ruby is from our stock collection of Liverpool Crepe Knits, so if you want to choose a different color to enhance your ensemble, check out the full collection on our site. Meanwhile, Formula Riviera gives the appearance of a ribbon lace, with alternating sheen and matte swooshes on a mesh base. If you want to take advantage of its stretch, make sure to lay your pattern pieces from selvage to selvage instead of lengthwise. If you choose to line your fabric in a non-stretch fabric, you can lay your pattern pieces out lengthwise.

VF242-09 Global Sheen
Champagne Crepe Back Satin 100% Polyester. 59” wide. Cold wash, dry low. Reversible. Ideal for self-contrast.
$1199
Global Nacht is a beautiful stretch-cotton damask - light enough to wear as a structured top, and substantial enough to wear as a skirt or dress. Choose which side you want to feature as the face for your new garment. It’s an elegant choice for a simple skirt to wear with the next two fabrics.
Global Riviera, like the ruby red version in the first collection, brings an updated look to the lacy overlay. This time, we paired it with Global Sheen, a champagne version of our premium Crepe Back Satin collection made in Japan. Whip up a simple sheath dress from Global Sheen, then toss on a knit top sewn from Global Riviera, and you will look like you spent hundreds on a designer dress. You can also dress it down by wearing a crepe-back satin shell under the same lace top and tossing on some jeans.

Global Collection
Formula 1 is a truly global sport. Currently, there are ten teams from seven countries. Each team has two main drivers who currently represent 15 countries. The United States now hosts three Formula 1 Grands Prix, Italy hosts two, and the other nineteen races jump around from country to country. Spectators book tickets for an entire weekend of events, beginning with practice rounds on Friday and Saturday, a qualifying heat or sprint race on Saturday, and the main race on Sunday. Practice rounds allow the drivers and their engineers to become familiar with the track and make minor adjustments to the car. The three-heat qualifying event determines starting positions. The Grand Prix race runs approximately an hour and a half if there are no slowdowns or stoppages for torrential rains, crashes, or to clean debris from the track. To spice things up a bit, F1 added a few Sprint races to the calendar. Teams go all-out in a shorter race--about 1/3 the distance--the day before the featured Grand Prix. Some tracks also host Formula 2 and Formula Academy races (the junior league and women’s league respectively) the morning of the Formula 1 Grand Prix, giving fans even more racing excitement. Some of the European tracks are set in the countryside on expansive lands, allowing “caravanners”- people in RVsto park for the weekend. Die-hard fans travel to multiple countries to cheer their teams or favorite drivers. They often group together in sections of the grandstands, singing, cheering, waving flags, and even dangerously setting off smoke flares.

From a New York clothing manufacturer comes a couple of deadstock double-knits that were beautifully made in South Korea. If you aren’t familiar with the term deadstock, it refers to the overage that is left when a manufacturer has finished sewing their line and doesn’t need the excess goods in the cutting room. Often, the manufacturer needs to order certain quantities from the mill, but can’t use it all, so the excess gets sold off to make room for the next season’s shipment. Global Wildcats and Global Lanes are stable knits with good body that can easily be incorporated into your wardrobe as any number of separates. For a springtime outfit, whip up a couple of quick cap-sleeved knit tops to wear over shorts sewn from Global Twill, an unbleached organic cotton.

Speed Collection
The cars aren’t the only speed demons in the sport. The pit crew is an insane blur during regulated tire changes. When a car comes to a complete stop in front of its garage, the crew changes all four tires....in an average 2.5 seconds! Red Bull Racing holds the world record at 1.6 seconds. That’s nuts! It takes no less than fourteen crew to change the tires. The car is lifted off the ground by one person on the front jack, and one on the back jack. For each tire, one person holds the wheel gun to remove and replace the wheel nut, one person removes the old tire, and one person throws on the new tire. Lastly, there can be up to three crewmembers who signal when it is safe to release the car. There are no fuel refills in F1. The strategists and engineers determine ahead of time how much fuel they want in the car (keeping within the formula regulations) and that’s it. There were some races where drivers ran out of fuel before the race ended, but that hasn’t happened in a long time. Qualifying heats are also wicked fast. Each driver is given just enough fuel to travel the track four times: an out-lap, a lap to build up speed and put heat in the tires for better grip, the “flying lap” at full speed which counts towards their ranking for starting-grid placement, and one cooldown lap. The top ten finishers may be separated by thousandths of a second. These high speeds are not sustainable during a race. The cars begin much heavier because of fuel load, the tires degrade quicker at faster speeds, and the hybrid batteries of the modern cars require some “slower” laps to recharge and harvest power. During a race, lap times speed up as fuel loads lighten, the track warms up, and the surface “rubbers in” and gains traction as tire rubber “sticks to the asphalt, forming a thin rubber layer” which gives the track more grip in heavy braking areas.

We know a sage chambray top will look wonderful paired with slacks tailored from Speed Brick, a delightful combed cotton. Or wear your chambray top with a flowing skirt sewn from Speed Blossoms rayon challis print. Rounding out the Speed Collection is a bright yellow duo. Speed Sunshine is a lightweight rayon challis from our basic stock collection. How to Care For Your Fabrics
The care instructions in this catalog are a conservative path, but not an absolute. There is no one size fits all for fabric care because of all the variables, such as hard versus soft water, well and septic versus municipal water, washers with and without a center aggitator, dryers that have a no-heat option, etc.
One supplier would have everyone dry clean every fabric, but for many of you this is not feasable.
Here are some general guides. You can always use your swatch to test how a fabric will react to washing and drying. Test wash the way you plan to wash your finished garments - this will remove any sizing and shrinkage prior to cutting/sewing.
Pro-Tip: Set your washer for an extra long spin cycle to remove excess water, then toss in the dryer on low heat for 5 minutes before hanging or laying flat. This minimizes wrinkles, and helps fibers last longer.

Becoming a Formula 1 driver is one of the most challenging and rigorous processes of any profes sional sport. Most F1 drivers begin young in Karting leagues, racing around tracks in single-seat, openwheel go-karts that look like mini-F1 cars. Super karts can race over 100 mph. The drivers who take home the most championships move up the ranks to Formula 3, then Formula 2, before earning a seat in Formula 1. This year, there are no rookie drivers in Formula 1, except as reserve drivers who travel with the team in case a main driver is unable to race. The coveted F1 seats are issued only to the best of the best. Each F1 driver must earn an FIA Super License based on hours of racing and types of races, earn ing points from races throughout the motorsport universe. A driver must also be at least 18 years old. This rule was adopted in 2015 after team Toro Rosso put an aggressive 17-year-old Max Verstappen be hind the wheel. It worked out for Max who holds the last three F1 World Championship titles. The Super license also has a written test and a substantial price tag that can cost up to $20,000. A percentage of the driver’s winnings is factored into their license renewal, leaving top-tier drivers on the hook for an estimated $1 million (actual fees are a closely guarded secret). F1 cars cost around $15 million to make each. Racing also comes with a human cost, though fatalities have thankfully decreased with stricter safety measures. With only a handful of female F1 drivers over the years, and none recently, the FIA now offers the F1 Academy to help put more women into the driver’s seat. F1 Academy features five teams, three drivers per team, and seven race weekends. This year, women of the Academy will race in Miami May 3-5, appearing the same weekend as the F1 Grand Prix.

Safety Collection
At the 2020 Bahrain Grand Prix, driver Romain Grosjean careened into a metal barrier at 119 mph, broke through the protective metal guardrail, split the car in half, and burst into a fireball. Except for fire marshals and medical personnel frantically trying to get to the driver, the track came to a complete halt. Amazingly, Grosjean remained conscious, unbuckled his seatbelt, and climbed to safety from his overturned cockpit in 28 seconds. He suffered only minor burns to the hands and one foot. Yes, his body “was subjected to 53 times the force of gravity,” his car exploded, and he emerged intact nearly unscathed. Protecting him was a “survival cell” (the monocoque where the driver sits), carbon fiber crash helmet, safety harness, Hand and Neck Support device (HANS), fire retardant garments head to toe, and the Halo outside the car. The Halo was mandated for all cars during the 2018 season, providing a curved bar protecting the driver from flying debris, roll-over crashes, and airborne cars (seriously, they can take flight for a couple of seconds if they hit something the wrong way). The Halo is produced by three companies outside of F1, all to the same specifications. This provides equal safety for all drivers, regardless of team ranking or financial position. We sure have come a long way from the safety gear of 1950, which was a cloth skull-cap, cotton coveralls, leather gloves and boots, and some goggles. Technology now relays a driver’s biometrics, such as pulse and blood oxygen levels, from a pad in the palms of the driver’s gloves to the team during the race. As for Grosjean, he retired from Formula 1 and moved to the States to race in the Indy Car Series.

Royal blue and lime green swirl like pools of water, while black and off-white spots mimic an aminal print, and laser cuts give a peek-a-boo effect in this visually stunning knit. Safety Chic is another exceptional fabric we received from Andria Lieu. Be bold and wear it as a summer dress, just remember to make a slip-dress, or underline it with our nylon stretch lining or rayon jersey knits. Or harness the fun of the peek-a-boo holes and make a stylish dress to wear over your swimsuit at the pool.
If you are sewing office attire, pair your Chic dress with a summer jacket constructed from Safety Kelly techno crepe Scuba knit. This has been such a great color for us, we were excited to share it with you in the catalog. The techno crepe is lighter and less spongy than many scuba knits on the market, making it a joy to wear.

Formula 1 has set a goal to have a net-zero carbon footprint by 2030. This ambitious plan includes replacing fossil fuels in the cars by 2026, and adjusting race schedules to reduce the number of miles traveled per team. F1 also required some tracks to update event policies, such as eliminating one-time use plastics at concession stands, offering chartered busses and trains to reduce spectator travel by personal car, and much more. According to F1, “An extensive report into F1’s environmental impact revealed the championship was responsible for generating 256,000 metric tons of CO2 emissions during the 2019 season, when the sustainability strategy was announced.” The changes began small, installing water-filling stations for F1 staff and team members to use instead of single-use plastic bottles. Many tracks now donate surplus or unused foods to local charities, such as the 1.5 metric tons donated after the 2020 Australian Grand Prix when the Pandemic shut-down began. Some tracks have installed solar panels, and others are now powered by renewable energy. The 2023 Las Vegas Grand Prix harvested moisture from air conditioning exhausts at local hotels, converting it into usable water. F1 also encouraged its European transit partner, DHL, to use only bio-fuel trucks when transporting for the teams and F1 staff. In 2015, the cars became “the most efficient in the world” with new hybrid power units, “delivering more power using less fuel than any other road car.” Engineers are already working to build cars that will run on 100% sustainable fuels created in part from municipal waste. This alone will reduce carbon emissions up to 95%. This technology is being shared outside of F1 to help the automobile industry improve sustainability for billions of cars on the road “...in as short a time as possible.”

Robert Kaufman’s fashion division created a line of cotton lawns that mimic the sweet designs of a world-famous company from London, but at much lower prices. Choose Eco Liberty when your summer sewing calls for a lightweight woven for tops. Pair it with a cute yoga skirt or knit pull-on pants sewn from Eco Sky which has a slightly firm hand and good body. Structure Eco Sky into a knit sheath dress, a knit jacket, knit slacks, and a princess-seamed top.
In our Fall 2022 catalog, we featured this lovely print on a navy base and we are so pleased to have this lighter version for springtime. In the croquis for Eco Coneflower, we show the knit tank sewn from the sky ponte, a pairing we recommend for the dress-length version of this New Look pattern for your summer soirées.
