The tragedy that took place at Karbala in 61AH is so full of lessons and inspiration; it is powerful enough to move grown men to tears. These days of Muharram and Safar are a time of mourning, reflection and learning. The story of Ashura is a university that provides a comprehensive curriculum which, if followed, will guide a person to the truth. The morals and insights gained at this university empower a person to never desist from their responsibility of enjoining good and forbidding evil in society. We notice that Imam Hussain (as) did not come to Karbala alone, but with his family - his brothers, sister, sons and nephews, amongst others indicating that family is right at the core of Islam. This starts with the sacred institution of marriage which has faced more and more challenges recently with increasing rates of divorce. How have our communities’ attitudes to marriage changed in the midst of conflicting messages from western society and traditional influences? What are the problems that couples face in the early years of marriage? Our feature article, The divorce phenomenon (page 8), discusses these vital issues and offers practical solutions. Furthermore, we are told that Imam Hussain (as) stood up against the gross injustice of Yazid. Our religion article (page 18) considers references to justice in the Quran to present a clear picture of this important concept and how it should be applied. In our new travel section (page 22), Sayed Mahdi Modarresi recounts his recent trip to Karbala with vivid details. One of our comments articles (page 29) considers the philosophies behind why some of us wear black in Muharram. I pray that we fully benefit from the university that is the tragedy of Karbala and the plethora of lessons it has to offer. This issue has tried to explore some of these lessons. May we implement what we learn so that by next Muharram we have improved ourselves and our communities.
