Welcome from the San Diego United Netball Club On behalf of the San Diego United Netball Club, I want to welcome you to San Diego, California, America’s Finest City, for the 15th Air New Zealand Golden Oldies World Netball Festival. Being American, I hadn’t heard of netball till a co-worker from the UK took me to a training session in March of 2007. What I quickly learned was that it is the most popular women’s sport in the world, played in over 80 countries and that it originated in the US in the late 1800s. I grew to love the game and have been the President of San Diego United since 2009 and have been involved in spreading netball across the USA as the VP of Development for Netball America since 2010. I believe that hosting the Golden Oldies Netball Festival in the US will give other Americans the opportunity to experience the wonderful sport of netball and the amazing women who play worldwide. Netball gives a sense of familiarity to expats and students who come to the US and these women are key in introducing it to American women. While it is a competitive sport, there is a lot of camaraderie amongst players from all the teams that lends itself to the epitome of sportsmanship. San Diego is a wonderful venue to showcase netball. This is a city that commemorates its historic charm, has gorgeous year round weather and endless activities for all ages. Don’t pass up an opportunity to play netball and enjoy all there is to offer in the beautiful Southern Californian city of San Diego. Looking forward to seeing you in 2013 Barbara Woods Festival Director

What’s in a name?
Nothing is left to chance
The inaugural Golden Oldies Netball Festival was held in Auckland, New Zealand in 1984. Since then Golden Oldies have enjoyed the unique experience that is the Golden Oldies Netball Festival in a diverse range of locations including Perth, Vancouver, Brisbane, Christchurch, Cook Islands, Singapore, Adelaide, Christchurch, Gold Coast, Queenstown, Fiji and San Diego in 2013.
The Golden Oldies World Netball Secretariat doesn’t leave Festival arrangements to chance. Transfers, accommodation, social functions, hospitality and the Netball are all planned and co-ordinated for you and your team.
The name Golden Oldies does not mean you cannot play Netball to the best of your ability or to the game’s strengths. The sides that you are drawn against will reflect the level of play that you have told us your team prefers, ranging from competitive to social and anywhere in between. The difference is that there is no overall winner and age is not a barrier, other than the fact that you must be over 35 years of age. You get the chance to play your favourite game in another exciting part of the world and maximise the fun from it.
