WORLD SCHOOLS GOLF CHALLENGE The sixth edition of the highly succesful World Schools Golf Challenge will be held in Somerset, England from April 13th to 18th, 2014 and one of Britains most highly regarded schools, Millfield College, will be the host and “Tournament Village” for the week long event. This follows Millfields participation in three previous World Schools Golf Challenges in Australia, South Africa and Thailand where they performed with distinction.
THE OBJECTIVES OF THE CHALLENGE ARE: • To encourage participation and development of golf within high schools and the educational system. • To assist promising high school golfers to continue to develop their skills on new courses and in friendly competition with players from throughout the golfing world. • To provide a solid base for young golfers to plan their golfing future. • To provide educational opportunities and experiences for students with an interest in golf. • To promote the enjoyment and qualities of golf as a recreational alternative for students regardless of their golfing abilities. The World Schools Golf Challenge is a special opportunity for high school golfers, their coaches, teachers, families and supporters.
WHO CAN ENTER? All schools are invited to bring teams to Somerset to experience the sporting, cultural and educational experiences that the region and the tournament have to offer. • Schools can enter as many teams as they wish • Teams can be all boys, all girls or co-ed • Team members must be pupils or immediate past pupils of their school • Age range is 13 - 19 years inclusive at the commencing date of the tournament • Open to any school from any part of the world All players must have official handicaps from recognised golf associations. A maximum tournament playing handicap of 21 will apply. All teams will need to be accompanied by teachers, coaches or registered caregivers on a ratio of 1 adult for every 8 students. In the event the group is less than 8 there must be one supervising adult. • Participants will broaden their education and understanding of different parts of the world and experience interaction with individuals and teams from other countries • The WSGC combines educational experiences with golfing opportunities • Under the direction of experienced golf tournament organisers participants have the opportunity to test their skills on new courses against international players All of this will lead to the understanding of the different skill sets, physical and mental, required to develop their game to compete at a higher level should they wish to.
PROGRAMME Teams must arrive on or prior to April 13th and settle in to their accommodation at Millfield School. SUNDAY 13th Mid afternoon the Team Managers’ Meeting will be held followed by the Opening Ceremony and Welcome at Millfield School – which will be the headquarters for the tournament. The Welcome Party will feature a buffet meal. MONDAY 14th FIRST ROUND Teams will be transferred to the host clubs for the first round of the 2014 World Schools Golf Challenge. TUESDAY 15th SECOND ROUND Teams will be transferred to the host golf clubs to play their second round. WEDNESDAY 16th REST DAY. Teams and their supporters can take the opportunity to explore this historic area of England. Or you might want to play more golf – let us know and we can organise it. THURSDAY 17th THIRD ROUND Teams will be transferred to the host golf clubs to play their third round. FRIDAY 18th FOURTH ROUND Teams will be transferred to the host golf clubs to play their fourth round. Early evening teams, parents, school staff and supporters will make their way to the Finale prizegiving dinner at Millfield School – a memorable and spectacular way to wind up a great week of golf in Somerset. The dinner will include the prizegiving and announcement of the teams who will have prevailed in 2013. SATURDAY 19th It’s time to say farewell to Millfield and your fellow competitors, to return home, or to see some more of Europe. It is a condition of entry that all players are required to purchase the official player’s registration package.
TOURNAMENT FORMAT The World Schools Golf Challenge is a four round stroke play tournament with both team and individual gross and nett competitions. Teams: The best 3 scores count each day. Individuals: Players are split into handicap divisions. historically there have been four divisions in the boys competition and two divisions for girls with champions in each division. Trophies are presented in all divisions for teams and individuals. ACCOMMODATION PACKAGE FOR PLAYERS £710 PER PERSON Inclusions: • 6 Nights accommodation including breakfast and evening meal • 4 Rounds of golf • Opening Ceremony and a Welcome Party which include traditional local entertainment, unlimited soft drinks and a buffet meal. • Awards ceremony and prize giving Dinner which includes, the tournament prize giving, unlimited soft drinks and a substantial buffet meal • A welcome package of local information on arrival • Transfers to and from the host golf club on playing days SUPPORTERS PACK WITH ACCOMMODATION £670 PER PERSON The package includes everything the players package does, excluding the 4 rounds of Golf. EXTRA NIGHTS PRIOR TO SUNDAY 13TH ARE AVAILABLE AT MILLFIELD AT £60 PER PERSON PER NIGHT (INCLUDES BREAKFAST AND EVENING MEAL) NON ACCOMMODATION It is our intention and wish that all teams are housed in Millfield for the duration of the event. The reason being that the WSGC is more than just a golf tournament. It is a fantastic opportunity for students and teachers from all over the world to mix and learn about each other away from the golf course. Several schools have established sporting and cultural exchanges as a result of meeting at a World Schools Golf Challenge. However, we acknowledge that this may not be practical for local schools who may wish to participate. Based in Street, Somerset, Millfield School will be the tournament headquarters and the hub for the sixth World Schools Golf Challenge Tournament Village. Millfield has the capacity to accommodate and cater for all 60 teams and their supporters in their campus accommodation units. Millfield have magnificent facilities including a driving range and a terrific short game practice area. It is set up perfectly to be a fantastic experience for everyone involved. The on-site golf facilities include: • Three putting greens, one artificial • A nine hole pitch ‘n’ putt course • Specialist short game area • A 350 yard long driving range, which has nine covered bays along with outside grass areas to hit off
