Greetings from the Editor

Kia ora koutou,

May was a busy month for the Community Team with a wide range of community network meetings, Youth Week events and professional development workshops. Even though June brings cooler weather we are looking forward to the month ahead.

Some of events and meetings coming up are:

• Skate Jam at Pearson Park, Oxford: Saturday 1 June.

• Financial Literacy for youth: Friday 7 & Thursday 20 June

• Planting day at Honda Forest: Saturday 8 June

• Skate Jam at Dudley Park, Rangiora: Saturday 8 June

• Planting day at Tūhaitara Coastal Park: Saturday 8 June

• Parent Education workshop: Tuesday 11 June

• National Elder Abuse Awareness Day: Saturday 15 June

• Violence Free North Canterbury Quiz Night Fundraiser: Friday 21 June

• English Language Classes: Saturdays (term time)

And we cannot forget about the two public holidays that are happening this month! King’s Birthday weekend (Monday 3 June) and Matariki (Friday 28 June).

In other news, the Mobile Community Hub (MCH) is ready for community hires. This is a fantastic new resource, thanks to Department of Internal Affairs funding. The MCH will allow organisations to reach out to people in vulnerable communities with extra support and information. The van has a range of items and equipment to support hirers to deliver their outreach, including a BBQ, fridge and freezer, and hot and cold water.

Welcome Bags are also still available at our Libraries and Customer Service Centres. If you have any new neighbours, pop in and grab a bag for them. It is a great way to introduce them to the neighbourhood and the District.

Nau mai haere mai from the rangers at Te Kōhaka o Tūhaitara Trust!

Youth Week 2024 took place from 20 to 26 May. Youth week is an opportunity to acknowledge how incredible our rangatahi are.

What better way to celebrate than by getting our hands dirty and contributing towards a sustainable future where they can continue to flourish?

As an extension of these festivities, we’re organising a planting day on 8 June to honour our rangatahi and their whānau. This event will run from 10am til 1pm on the Pegasus ridgeline above the intersection of Arahura Road and Kokopu Street in Pegasus. Everyone is invited, and we’ll provide a sausage sizzle lunch to thank our volunteers. Please RSVP on our website under the planting days tab.

Huria Mahinga Kai Heritage Reserve continues to impress as entranceways are near completion. The development of this area has been relatively speedy. While there is still work to do in this area to ensure the native plants reach a self-sufficient maturity,

the progress of the site over the last couple of years has been phenomenal, from a red zone area with heavily compacted soils to an array of natives, with new paths weaving throughout, beautiful palisade fencing and of course we can’t forget to mention the timber Waha structure that brings it all in together. Stay updated with park news by following us on Facebook. This platform is where we can get information to everyone faster and adjust information as necessary, to ensure everyone is kept up to date.

An important update on our Facebook page is the opening of the southern end of the park (Woodend Beach Road heading towards Kaiapoi) following forestry operations. The operations have now shifted northward from Woodend Beach Road towards Pegasus. For more details, visit our Facebook page.

Public consultation on modernising our approach to the 2028 Census

The way customers in Aotearoa

New Zealand use data is changing. People, communities, and organisations need more data – and often, new types of data – that are relevant to daily life in Aotearoa. We know that to deliver on this efficiently as possible, we need to do things differently. We’ve been looking at how we make use of different data sources, technology, and collection methods; and how we work in the most effective and financially sustainable ways possible.

Between 8 May and 18 June 2024, we are conducting a public consultation on ‘Modernising our approach to the 2028 Census’. We are seeking feedback on how we do a population census in the future, and we’d like to encourage you to have your say.

Information about this consultation can be found here:

Winter fire safety

Every year, as temperatures drop, we see a significant increase in the number of house fires. Winter brings a unique set of fire dangers that you need to be aware of.

For safety tips to help keep you, your whanau or flatmates safe, no matter the season, go to: fireandemergency.nz/home-fire-safety/ home-fire-hazards/winter-fire-safety

Other fire safety tips to remember:

• Fire moves incredibly fast – a house fire can kill within three minutes. Keep your smoke alarms in working order by pressing the button to check.

• Make a household escapemyhouse.nz so you can get out safely during a fire. Always keep keys in deadlocks on doors and windows.

• Don’t leave the room when cooking. If you need to, remember to switch off before you walk off.

VOLUNTEER VISITORS NEEDED

Could you spare a little time to become a volunteer visitor?

National Volunteer Week

June 16th marks the start of National Volunteer Week, so what better time to say a very big thank you to the ‘Big Brothers’ and ‘Big Sisters’ of North Canterbury!

Playing board games and sports, baking and crafting, watching movies or going for walks – they’re just a few of the activities that volunteer mentors and their mentees get up to each week.

But it’s more than just hanging out and having fun. Through shared experiences and quality one-on-one time with their mentors, our young people are provided the opportunity to participate in new activities, connect with others in their communities and learn important, everyday life skills.

Volunteers are the threads weaving our community together and we’ll be celebrating all week long on Facebook and Instagram, so be sure to follow along!

What sorts of questions can CAB help me with?

We’ll deal with anything that’s concerning you no matter how big or how small. Some examples of questions we’ve been asked include:

• What can I do if my son and daughter-inlaw won’t let me visit my grandchildren?

• Is it illegal to ride a bicycle on the footpath?

• How do I challenge a decision ACC have made about my claim?

• Does my tenancy agreement have to be in writing?

• I’ve lost my credit card. What should I do?

• Can I appeal my driver licence suspension?

• Do I have to show a receipt if I have a problem with goods?

• Where can I donate excess garden produce?

• My car was damaged when I swerved to avoid a farm animal which was on the road. What should I do?

• Can you help me fill in a form?

• My neighbour has installed a security camera that points directly into my home. What can I do about this?

Do get in touch with us. We’re trained to listen and to research. We’re here to help.

You’ll find us at 209 High Street, Rangiora, or you can phone us on 03 313 8822 or 0800 367 222, or send us an email northcanterbury@cab.org.nz

Or we can work with you on-line using your own MyMSD Log-in to help you navigate the large amount of information available, and help with filling-in forms.

Our Financial Mentors are friendly, knowledgeable and more than happy to help.

They know the Work and Income system inside-out – and what they don’t know they will certainly find out for you. If you’d like some support to find out what benefits or extra support you can access, contact us to talk to a Financial Mentor today.

The Financial Mentors at BSNC (Budgeting Services North Canterbury) would like to help you create a sustainable budget and provide financial mentoring.

Please get in touch with our Service Manager: servicemanager@bsnc.org.nz or phone 03 313 3505

Our service is free and totally confidential.

Rangiora Museum

The meeting on Thursday 27 June, 7.30pm at 29 Good Street, will feature a presentation by Donald Ellis, local resident and baker, (Part 2 of “Trouble at t’Mill”) where everyone is welcome and free, although donations from non-members of the Rangiora Early Records Society would be appreciated. If you came last year to Donald’s interesting story of how Arthur Ellis, of Dunedin sleeping bag and mattress fame, came to New Zealand in a very dramatic way, you will enjoy the sequel. Supper will be served along with our popular community chat. The museum meeting room is cosy and warm too.

It is open Wednesdays and Sundays, 1.30pm to 4pm and volunteers are always welcome to join the volunteers working on Wednesday afternoons.

Andrew London returns to Balcairn Hall!

Andrew London’s quirky songs will make you laugh out loud as you recognise yourself and everyone around you, and all the prejudices, obsessions and weird little idiosyncrasies we Kiwis put out on display every day.

There are songs about politics, social status, shopping habits, teenagers, coffee culture, neighbours and small town protocol. And insights into the unpredictable and tenuous lives of traveling musicians, based on having played a thousand gigs from the wool sheds of Central Otago to the board rooms of Queen Street.

Delivery is wrapped in an eclectic mix of jazz/blues/country and folk styles with Andrew’s swing-era guitar style accompanying, while partner Kirsten underpins solidly on bass and backing vocals, lyric-prompting and emotional counselling.

His songs and recordings have gained 4-star reviews in Downbeat magazine (the World’s longest-running and most widely read jazz magazine), provided soundtracks to movies (Second-Hand Wedding, No Ordinary Sheila, No Petrol, No Diesel), been nominated for Tui awards and contributed to National Radio’s Greatest Song Ever Written and a Correspondence School English Syllabus.

The duo’s current show sees them tighter than ever, the songs more concise, with the accent on acerbic satire, self-deprecating humour and tongue-twisting wordsmithery.

Tickets $30 available from: Stan’s 7 Day Pharmacy Rangiora, Sally Mac’s Amberley, Sefton Garage, Online balcairnhall.com

Includes our famous free country supper - alcohol free – raffles – CD sales - ROAR – Bring a cushion!

The profits from all performances go back to maintaining our local and historic Balcairn Hall and its surrounding property. We are grateful for the corporate sponsorship of Mike Greer Home, North Canterbury Ltd and Woolworths Amberley.
