Tēnā koutou katoa

Nō reira, tenei te mihi kia a koutou katoa.

My name is Michelle Field-Wilson and I have joined the Community Team as the Arts Strategy Facilitator.

I have lived in Waimakariri for the last ten years with my daughters, one attends Lincoln University and the other, Rangiora High School. We have an amazing community, full of opportunities and experiences in the Arts and it is a privilege to be working alongside the Arts sector.

My background is varied, beginning in education as a Primary Teacher, involved in music, art, productions and pastoral care. Since that time, I have lectured in Musical Play Therapy, been a member of Boards, in administrative roles, and facilitated new projects. The most recent project was working across 18 North Canterbury schools. I grew up in a musical family in Nelson, playing the piano and cello. This eclectic mix of roles and life experience has given me a strong sense of how the Arts are important for communities to thrive and the positive social and economic outcomes that result.

My role ensures that there is a commitment from Council to implement the newly developed Ngā Toi o Waimakariri - Art Strategy. We can work together to champion the Arts in Waimakariri by strengthening, growing and ensuring sustainability for the future by putting Waimakariri on the map as an Arts destination.

I would love to hear from anyone in the Arts sector: groups, collectives or individuals, so that I can learn more about what is happening in our community.

To view the Waimakariri Arts Strategy go to: waimakariri.govt.nz/community-andrecreation/arts-and-heritage

Please feel free to contact me Tuesdays 8.30am–12.30pm, Wednesdays and Thursdays 8.30am–5pm via phone 027 258 1063 or email me michelle.field.wilson@wmk.govt.nz

Tūhaitara Coastal Park

Kia ora koutou katoa, hari te wiki o te reo Māori! Hello to you all and happy Māori language week for 14 September -21 September.

We are getting into full swing with planting for the spring, particularly with our Huria Reserve planting day on 28 September which is welcome to any people wanting to come and plant some trees and secure our future. We are hoping to get 700 plants in the ground with the help from volunteers and many hands make light work so we would love to see you there. There will be a free sausage sizzle, coffee and hot chocolates for people who come along. The planting areas for Huria Reserve will be extending and areas already planted will be planted with new, diverse native plants that can be sheltered and protected by the strong plants that are now well established. If you want to be one of the volunteers and join us in bringing bird life and song to our communities then come along and donate some of your energy to our mahi (work).

Forestry in the park has drawn to a close. This work has been very important to keep people safe after the fire in 2022 that left some trees unhealthy and at risk of falling onto trails. Looking into the future, we will be re-planting these areas where trees have been removed to ensure that habitat is available to birds and other wildlife.

In the park we have had lovely sunny weather with the welcome of spring. The new flowers blooming on our native trees have been attracting our local pollinators such as bees, flies, and butterflies and birds awaiting nectar from flowers. For students of our local schools who put up insect hotels with collections of natural materials for places for insects to live and hide in away from birds, they have shown great success. Te Kōhanga Wetlands are continuing to develop as a valuable habitat for birds that

live in or visit wetlands for food and nesting habitat in part of the year. Below is a photo our ranger Emily took through a pair of binoculars. In the back of the photo, the birds ready to take flight are native kuruwhengi Australasian shovelor ducks and the black ducks with the bright orange eyes in the front of the picture are pāpango scaup ducks.

Finally the whole team at Tūhaitara Coastal Park just want to say a huge thank you for your patience at this time. We are

extremely busy right now so we can’t take calls and might be occupied when you walk past the office, but you’re always welcome to send us a message on Facebook, Instagram or via the form on our website. We will respond to these messages as soon as we can.

We’re looking forward to things getting back to normal in a couple of months, as well as seeing everyone out and about as the weather warms up!

General Support

Citizens Advice Bureau North Canterbury is a community organisation helping everyone know and understand their rights and obligations, and how to use this information to get the best outcomes. At CAB we provide people with the confidence and support they need to take action.

Services

Our service is not-for-profit and delivered by trained volunteers. We’re available faceto-face, by phone and by email.

No question is too big or too small to bring to us. We’ll listen, research and assist you in any way we can. There’s no time limit on how long you can spend with one of our volunteers.

Even if you’ve taken some steps already, we’re happy to discuss options with you and perhaps find even more information to support you.

It can be very helpful to talk things over before taking action, whether it’s what to say when you visit a retailer about a faulty product or how to approach your gas/phone/power provider about a query on your bill.

Maybe it’s how to talk to your employer about a workplace issue or your landlord about a tenancy issue. Or perhaps it’s an issue with the dynamics of family relationships or noisy neighbours. We’re here to help!

We offer additional services for clients including:

• free Justice of the Peace service (please check with us for days/times)

• free Beneficiary, Budgeting, Employment, Immigration and Legal Information clinics (please check with us for days/times)

• free CV preparation and cover letter service (by appointment only)

• an information service for newcomers and migrants.

You’ll find us at 209 High Street, Rangiora, or you can phone us on 03 313 8822 or 0800 367 222, or email us northcanterbury@cab.org.nz

Credit Card or Pay Later plans?

Pay Later options might look very attractive, especially if you don’t have a credit card, or you’re already at your limit on your credit card.

However, there are still things you need to consider before committing yourself to one of these plans. Some Pay Later plans might have no initial fees and no interest payments – but it is still considered debt, and you will need to pay on time to avoid additional fees (e.g. late payment fees).

When you set up your Pay Later plan, deductions will be made automatically from your nominated bank account, which means you won’t have these funds available for other expenses; and if you overdraw your account your bank may also charge additional fees.

Also be aware that while you don’t need a credit check to use a Pay Later plan, the debt will still appear on your credit history and can affect your credit score if you miss a payment. (See here to check your credit score – it’s free: govt.nz/browse/consumer-rights-andcomplaints/debt-and-credit-records/checkyour-own-credit-report)

There is considerable temptation to buy items now, whether you’re buying in-store or on-line. Often the salesperson will try to ‘upsell’ you to a Pay Later plan – they get their sales commission, and you are committed to extra repayments in your budget.

If you want to discuss what might be a better solution for your situation, then come talk to a Financial Mentor at BSNC who can explain all your options. They will help you select one that works best for your situation.

Not all debt is bad debt, and in the right situation a Pay Later plan can be a good option for your situation. To ensure you’re getting independent advice on what is best for your situation, that’s where a Financial Mentor can help.

Our Financial Mentors will help you prepare a budget to see what you can afford, and at the same time they’ll also give all your expenses and current repayments a review to check you are not paying too much in repayments to multiple providers.

Our Financial Mentors can also help you understand the Pay Later provider’s terms and conditions, and what options you have if you can’t make a payment.

Peer Support

A journey of discovery where an individual leads their own unique process of moving forwards.

Peer Support is not like clinical support, nor is it just like being friends. Peer Support helps people to understand each other because they’ve ‘been there’, shared similar experiences, and can model for each other a willingness to learn and grow. In Peer Support, people come together with the intention of changing unhelpful patterns and getting out of ’stuck’ places It can help to build relationships that are respectful, mutually responsible, and potentially transformative, while feeling safe and accepting.

Intentional and purposeful relationships allow us to review our current position, helping both parties to learn and grow. They encourage us to understand, and evaluate, our experiences. Promoting a ‘trauma-informed’ way of relating to ourselves, Peer Support pushes us to move towards. It focuses on what and where we want to be, rather than focussing on what we need to stop doing.

How do we work?

• Following a referral, a Peer Supporter will meet regularly with the person (or talk over the phone) to assist, exploring their vision and the barriers that are stopping them from moving towards it.

• Generally, we will provide peer support for a person for 12 months, although this can be extended if required.

• Peer Support workers build trusting relationships where people can feel safe to share, learn, grow, and take risks.

Peer Support Workers

Comcare Peer Supporters have had personal experience of mental illness and/or addiction. They are well trained and supported, receiving both individual and group supervision. Peer Support training assists people examine their past and current experiences, their potential strengths and vulnerabilities. They are trauma-informed, and trained in communication, boundary setting, resilience development, and self-care. Based on the principle ‘to understand, you must first experience’, Peer Support provides a supportive culture, during initial training, on-going training, and at supervision groups
