Greetings from the Editor
As I sit down to write this editorial piece, I can’t help but marvel that we are into August. August for me is a month of garden preparation. As we get closer to spring, I look forward to the associated burst of vegetable, fruit and flower gardening that happens in our district.
We have a number of community gardens, food forests, garden clubs and foraging spots across Waimakariri and wider Canterbury which provide recreation, volunteering opportunities, work experience, vast amounts of food and beautiful sensory experiences!
Our new Mobile Community Hub resource has been out and about, used by both our Civil Defence colleagues and a number of community groups to deliver food and information to vulnerable communities. If your organisation would like to use this for the benefit of our vulnerable community members, please come and see one of our customer service centres.
There are plenty of activities keeping us all busy over the coming months, with the North Canterbury Youth Futures Expo on Tuesday 13 August, and upcoming parent education session focused on alcohol and vaping harm on Thursday 22 August and Big Brothers Big Sisters Big Variety show on Saturday 28 September.
Our Welcoming Communities project has just released a survey on our Let’s Talk platform. This is for people who have moved to Waimakariri to complete so we can better understand the experience of someone who moves into our district. Find this survey at waimakariri.govt.nz/letstalk
If the long cold nights are getting dreary, consider volunteering for one of our amazing community causes. More information on our website.
Kia pai ō rā, have a great day
New Youth Pastor at Kaiapoi
Baptist
Church
Kia Ora
My name is Caleb, and I am the new Youth Pastor at Kaiapoi Baptist Church.
My family and I moved to the area in March 2024 and we think the community in Kaiapoi is pretty cool.
I have a passion for seeing young people grow and explore life’s questions in a safe, fun, environment. I believe doing this within a church community surrounded by people who love Jesus and love each other is a great place to foster this.
We, as a church, plan to grow our capacity to support the young people in our community in the future. At the moment we have a youth group for years 6–10 which is held on a Wednesday night, 6–7.30pm during the school term in the Church building (67 Fuller Street).
If you would like to know more info about it feel free to get in touch: caleb@kaiapoibaptist.org.nz
Community Services Coordinator
Kia Ora
My name is Andrea, and I am the new Community Services Coordinator for Whānau Āwhina Plunket, based in North Canterbury. I am excited to announce the start of two new coffee groups for whānau with infants under one year old.
These groups will run weekly during term time and provide a wonderful opportunity for families to connect and support each other.
The details are as follows:
• Rangiora: Starting on Tuesday 23 July, 10–11am at 8 Albert Street, Rangiora.
• Kaiapoi: Starting on Thursday 25 July, 10–11am at 26 Sewell Street, Kaiapoi.
Come and enjoy a cuppa in a warm, relaxed environment, and get to know other families in the local area.
We hope to see you there!

Ashley Gorge Working Bee – Stage 3
Pictured here is the grimly determined team of Air Cadets, local volunteers and Ashley Gorge Reserve Advisory Group (AGRAG) members who successfully completed the clearance of the new accessible forest track at Ashley Gorge Reserve early in July.
A big thank you to all those who participated including Jean Pierre Derveaux, our camp ground manager and reserve caretaker.
The AGRAG is underway with the installation of this accessible track through the reserve’s upper terrace of forest utilising funding raised at the Ashley “Gorgeous” Gala Day held earlier in the year.
Once completed, the 100 metre accessible track will enable physically challenged visitors to access this area of bush and appreciate the beauty of the Ashley Gorge Reserve.
AGRAG commits significant voluntary hours to the enhancement of the reserve for visitor enjoyment and in recent years successfully requested Council funds for the construction of the Reynold’s Pavilion and the wheelchair accessible barbeque enjoyed by thousands of visitors every year.
The next Gala Day will be held in the reserve on Waitangi Day 2025 (Thursday 6 February 2025).

Kia ora e hoa o Te Kōhaka o Tūhaitara Trust
Hello friend of Te Kōhaka o Tūhaitara Trust!
The quiet of winter has given us time to prepare for the hustle and bustle of the upcoming spring and summer. Trees That Count have been great friends of ours and we have been working together for the last three years on a coastal forest. Their recent visit has inspired some great new spots for our upcoming planting days. This project has us planting all the way from the beach, up and over the dunes, and down the other side towards our wetlands.
Checking to see how well the plants are doing over time gives us an idea of what is working well and what isn’t and allows us
to pass on that knowledge to other people trying to do the same thing. These coastal forests we plant will create great homes for birds who are visiting and birds who call the area home.
You may have heard a loud call from one of our native residents of the coastal area, the spur-winged plover. These birds are easily recognised by their distinct call, yellow bill and yellow eye ring. They are particularly common in open areas and are currently in the middle of their breeding and egg laying period which is likely causing them to be so loud.
Our native plants in harsh areas along the coast have been getting help from unlikely friends. Gorse! These introduced “rivals” can tolerate tricky conditions and are too prickly for rabbits to eat. This has meant that many plants grown alongside gorse grow better, particularly with small plants where their soft, tasty leaves and stems get completely eaten by rabbits before they can get large enough to get away. These gorse shrubs also reduce the wind, frost and drought in open areas and make the conditions kinder for growth of native trees we plant.
Once our plants get up enough on their own feet, the introduced nurse crop of
gorse can be removed to free up space so that our native plants can have more sunlight and water that they need. Bigger native species will then be able to shelter more sensitive species added to the forest. Below you can see a section that has had gorse removed and has freed up space for plants of Carex secta, Coprosma robusta (karamu), harakeke, as well as many types of native ferns and sprawling groundcover species. Cut gorse has even been used to protect smaller plants in open areas.

Waikuku and Pegasus Platforms completion
Coastal access and enjoyment of our beaches at Pegasus and Waikuku has now been greatly enhanced with the completion of the accessible viewing platforms. The timber platforms built by Hazeldine Construction provide amazing views up and down our District coastline with built in seating enabling visitors to take in the vista at their leisure. Path access from the car parks to the platforms and also to the beach has been designed with wheelchair users in mind to ensure as many members of our community as possible can share in the appreciation of our beaches.
This is a core objective of the Northern Pegasus Bay Bylaw (NPBB 2023) and the construction of the platforms was included in the Implementation Plan for this bylaw.
The next step in enhancing access is the proposed install of 40–50 metres of Mobi matting at Waikuku Beach to improve access across the soft sand especially for visitors in wheelchairs and family groups with strollers.
Complimentary email received from a happy resident:
At the weekend we travelled to Pegasus to walk the beach which we do quite regularly. What a surprise to see the beautiful viewing platform. You have enhanced this area sooo much and all the people just sitting in the sun taking in the amazing views. The walkway down to the beach is just so much more user friendly now the sand is packed and firm. Congratulations, well done and thank you for making the Waimakariri region one of the best.
Two happy walkers

Māori Engagement Report
Recently CABNZ released The Māori Engagement with Citizens Advice Bureau: A Spotlight Report into the Issues faced by Māori Clients of the CAB.
It brings together insights from analysis of one year of enquiries to the CAB from Māori clients and looks at the key issues for which Māori clients seek help from the CAB.
The findings of this report are confronting. Through our analysis, we can see the significant and disproportionate hardship experienced by Māori in our communities. These situations of inequity and hardship for our Māori clients expose failures in social systems and structures, both historic and current, and provide opportunities for CAB to advocate for change.
For us as CAB, this report is significant because it shows the ways that we, as a service, are engaging with Māori in our communities and are providing meaningful assistance in areas where people are facing significant hardship. It demonstrates that through the CAB service, Māori clients can experience manaakitanga and kindness and have their mana upheld.
You can read the report here: cab.org.nz/assets/Documents/MaoriEngagement-Report/FINAL-REPORT_Maoriengagement-with-CAB_public-release.pdf

Working with a Financial Mentor
Has your employment situation changed?
If your household income is less than it was a couple of months ago, maybe you’d like some support to help you re-negotiate your repayments with some of your creditors?
If debt is causing you sleepless nights and you’d like to talk to someone who can actually help you make some headway –then, contacting Budgeting Services North Canterbury (BSNC) is a great place to start.
BSNC has a team of certificated Financial Mentors who each provide confidential and tailored help for your particular situation. The service is free – there is no cost to you at all.
After talking with someone from our team you will be matched to a Financial Mentor who is best able to assist you with your situation.
Then, together you agree your first appointment venue and timing.
Financial Mentors appreciate that speaking to someone else about your financial situation can be difficult, although many of our Financial Mentors have also been in similar situations at some stage in their lives – so they understand many of the challenges you might be facing.
Our Financial Mentors are calm, kind and knowledgeable. However, for you to get the most out of your time with a Financial
