Greetings from the Editor
Kia ora koutou — Hi everyone
Welcome to the September edition of Chatter!
By the time this goes to print, our streets and gardens will be full of blossoming trees and spring flowers — a beautiful follow-on from winter’s last blessing of a good blanketing of snow, followed by a run of clear blue skies and even the second blue moon in two years, for good measure!
Spring is a great time to reflect on our physical and mental wellbeing — and ways to fill our cup. Our district is full of low cost and free ways to do just that. More details inside this issue!
23-29 September is Mental Health Awareness Week. This year’s theme is ‘Community is… what we create together’. Have a think about how you can include the five practical ways to boost your mental health, go to: mhaw.nz
We all have challenging times in life and sometimes need to lean on each other or services for support. We are fortunate
to have many local services that can help in those times. The Next Steps website is a great resource to find these. Visit nextsteps.org.nz
The Waimakariri Youth Council has organised a River Clean Up on Saturday 21 September. For information about this, visit the Waimakariri Youth Council Facebook and Instagram pages.
This is an incredibly vibrant community. For more information and a regular feed on what’s happening to support, connect, educate and empower local residents, ‘Like’ the Waimakariri Community Team Facebook page: facebook.com/ WaimakaririCommunityTeam

Kia Ora,
My name is Andrea, and I am the new Community Services Coordinator for Whānau Āwhina Plunket, based in North Canterbury. I am excited to announce the start of two new coffee groups for whānau with infants under one year old. These groups will run weekly during term time and provide a wonderful opportunity for families to connect and support each other.
Hats off to all our valued supporters!
An enthusiastic van load of students from the Student Volunteer Army came along to support the Silverstream Reserve volunteers in planting 300 native seedlings at Silverstream Reserve on Sunday 11 August.
The details are as follows:
• Rangiora
Starting on Tuesday 23 July, from 10–11am at 8 Albert Street, Rangiora.
• Kaiapoi
Starting on Thursday 25 July, from 10–11am at 26 Sewell Street, Kaiapoi.
Come and enjoy a cuppa in a warm, relaxed environment, and get to know other families in the local area. We hope to see you there!
A large area is progressively being cleared of blackberry and other exotic weeds to make room under a canopy of willows for native seedlings to establish and slowly transition into a native forest and wetland area. The area is locally referred to as "David's Way" in recognition of one of our hard working volunteers, David Birch. The site is also being trapped by the Silverstream Reserve trapping team who have now surpassed a total of 2,500 predators trapped in the reserve since they commenced.
Kia ora koutou katoa e hoa o Tūhaitara Coastal Park –Hello to you all, friends of Tūhaitara Coastal Park.
A litter survey on Woodend Beach with a group of Rangiora Borough School students found multiple pieces of evidence of burned wood and newspaper, which was very concerning given the coastline’s recent history with beach fires. Please remember that there is a total fire ban on the beach and in the park. The group also found lots of different types of rubbish that had either washed ashore or been littered by visitors to the beach.
Fish and Game North Canterbury visited the park for their annual shoveler duck survey at Tūtaepatu Lagoon and counted 800 native kuruwhengu - shovelor ducks. We are so happy that these beautiful ducks call the taonga of Tūtaepatu Lagoon their home. The kuruwhengu is named because of its long, broad scoop-shaped bill with spiky, filtering hairs called lamellae – ideal for sieving small plants, bugs and seeds close to the surface of
water or mud. With its bill under water, the shoveler sieves as it swims – giving rise to the Māori name kuruwhengu, meaning to snuffle. Had you heard about this bird?

North Canterbury’s Local and Trusted Cat Rescue Since 2006
“It’s great fun to have kittens in your home until they find their forever families!” - Ali, Foster Parent
Fostering cats or kittens with Cat Care is a joyful and rewarding experience. All you need is time, patience, and a love for cats.
Felines needing foster homes come from various backgrounds - some are friendly and healthy, while others are stray, abandoned, or neglected. Most range in age from four to 10 weeks, though we take in cats of all ages
As a foster parent, your primary responsibilities include feeding, cleaning, and socialising your fosters This means exposing them to everyday household experiences and other pets if you have them Long-haired cats require daily grooming You’ll also need to keep their health records up to date and
administer regular flea and worm treatments
Since we don’t have a shelter, rehomings are done directly between foster parents and adopting families Potential adopters will visit your home to meet the cats/kittens, and you’ll help ensure they’re a good match
Foster parents are vital to our mission, and we always need more help We provide everything you need to foster - even Safe4 NZ disinfectant and odour killer!
“I love cats but already have a home full. Fostering enables us to enjoy the cuteness of the tiniest felines while helping them find the perfect home after a rough start”Jeanine, Foster Parent

Savvy Ways to Budget and Save
Are you finding it difficult to make ends meet?
Here at Budgeting Services North Canterbury we’re very familiar with the financial pressures many people are facing with the increased costs of living.
While we can’t wave a magic wand, we can work with you at an individual level to discuss what your options might be to help your money go further. Many of the banking websites and the Government money management websites (e.g. Sorted) offer tips and suggestions of how to save money. But, rather than tell you about these — what we can offer is to work with you, so we can learn about your specific situation, and then advise which options and offers will give you the best opportunity to save you money.
If debt is causing you sleepless nights and you’d like to talk to someone who can actually help you make some headway –then contacting our team is a great place to start.
We have a team of very savvy Financial Mentors who each provide confidential and tailored help for your particular situation.
Our service is free — there is no cost to you at all.
After talking with someone from our team you will be matched to a Financial Mentor who is best able to assist you with your situation.
War Memorial Hall
1 Albert Street, Rangiora 7400
PO Box 351, Rangiora 7440
Phone: 03 313 3505
Email: servicemanager@bsnc.org.nz
Website: bsnc.org.nz
Then together you agree your first appointment venue and timing.
The Financial Mentor will work with you to find savvy ways to save, and they will create a plan that works for your situation.
Our Financial Mentors are calm, kind and knowledgeable.
They appreciate that speaking to someone else about your financial situation can be difficult, although many of our Financial Mentors have also been in similar situations at some stage in their lives — so they understand many of the challenges you might be facing.
A Financial Mentor will not take control of your money, all they can offer is to provide you with new tools and knowledge which might improve your situation – what you do is entirely up to you.
A Financial Mentor can be an advocate for you, or provide you support and guidance to advocate for yourself.
A Financial Mentor is able to empower you to make better household budgeting decisions. There is no obligation, all our services are free and confidential.

Employer Support
Support for local businesses to help young people to join the local workforce.
Do you have employment or apprenticeship opportunities for local young people? Mayors Taskforce for Jobs (MTFJ) can support you to train and upskill your new staff.
MTFJ is a collaboration between Waimakariri District Council and Ministry of Social Development (MSD).
MTFJ is focused on helping local businesses when they employ a young person under the age of 25, those of any age who live with a disability or health condition or other needs and have had difficulty finding work. Each funding request is considered on a case-by-case
basis and tailored to fit the needs of the new hire and the business they will be joining.
