Greetings from the Editor

Kia ora Koutou

Welcome to November!

It’s been a beautiful sight to see so many smiles on the streets of our district, thanks to the sunny, warm days of spring.

November often signals a series of “lasts” for the year, as we look ahead to the holidays. The final Community Networking Forum of 2024 will meet on 14 November in Oxford. These forums have been a key connecting point for our community organisations, allowing everyone to share what’s happening in their spaces and identify ways we can collaborate with one another. We’d love to see you there!

On 25 November, we recognise White Ribbon Day, an international campaign challenging men to stand up against violence towards women.

The Violence Free North Canterbury Network will be hosting a series of community events across the Waimakariri, including a White Ribbon Sausage Sizzle and prize wheel on the front lawn of the Rangiora Service Centre on Monday 25 November, from 11am-2pm. Come join the network as they raise awareness about the epidemic of gendered violence and include your voice with the thousands standing up against it.

We all know we’re living in tough days. For those moments when you may feel things getting too heavy, please remember you are not alone. There are so many organisations in our community, made up of incredible individuals, ready to help without judgment. We are stronger together. Check out www.nextsteps.org.nz to find help tailored to your needs.

Community Information

Tūhaitara Coastal Park

Kia ora koutou katoa ngā hoa o Tūhaitara Coastal Park – Hello to all friends of Tūhaitara Coastal Park

Our race to plant thousands of trees, shrubs and grasses before summer has been underway over the recent autumn and spring months. Our recent community planting day in Huria Reserve, Kaiapoi was a great success with five hundred plants getting into the ground. If you came and helped out with your friends and whānau, we and our local birds thank you dearly. If you missed it, don’t worry, we will be having another big planting day in the reserve in autumn of 2025, so make sure to keep an eye on our Friends of Tūhaitara facebook page for updates.

We recently did a check of our plants from the last year to see how well they’re doing. We saw lots of success with planting under cover of other trees whether they be native or exotic. These larger trees act as the adults in the plant community to protect the younger plants from frost in winter and harsh sun in summer by sheltering them from above. Photo 1 shows a happy akiraho tree that was planted within the year and grown

under cover of pine trees with dappled light. Another example can be seen in photo 2 and 3 below where a older kahikatea (photo 2) and totara (photo 3) both did well when planted next to exotic gorse.

In celebration of the valuable mahi (work) done by volunteers in Waimakariri, the Waimakariri District Council will host a community event on Sunday 10 November at Trousellot Park in Kaiapoi. This event will run from 11am-2pm where there will be games, nature activities, music, sausage sizzles and more. Come along and have fun engaging and learning about our environment and biodiversity.

With all this planting going on the team at Tūhaitara Coastal Park are extremely busy right now, so we can’t take calls and might be occupied when you walk past the office, but you’re always welcome to send us a message on Facebook, Instagram or via the form on our website. We will respond to these messages as soon as we can.

We’re looking forward to things getting back to normal in a couple of months, as well as seeing everyone out and about as the weather warms up!

Ka kite anō au i a koutou – I’ll see you again.

Protecting your property

If you live outside a city, whether it’s a lifestyle block or a rural area, there are steps you can take to reduce the risk of wildfires for yourself, your property and your livestock or other animals.

Create safety zones

If you have a rural property, creating ‘safety zones’ around your home can slow the spread of fire and give firefighters more space to safely fight a fire.

In zone 1 (10m around your house), mow regularly, water your lawns whenever possible, grow low flammability plants, regularly clean gutters and remove leaves and twigs.

In zone 2 (10-30m around your house), reduce the number of trees, particularly hedges (these often help spread wildfires). Space out remaining trees so they aren’t touching each other. Prune branches up to 2m from the ground and near power lines. Remove fallen branches, leaves and other accumulated debris.

Around your home

The greatest risk to your home is when embers from a wildfire are carried by the wind. Keep roofs and gutters clear of dead leaves, debris and pine needles.

Embers can travel more than 2km from a wildfire. Enclose the space under homes and decks with fire-resistant material and reduce the threat of embers passing through vents in the eaves by installing 3mm metal mesh screening.

Move anything that could burn (mulch, flammable plants, leaves, needles and firewood piles) away from wall exteriors, decks or porches.

Ensure wooden fencing is not attached to the house.

Carrying out regular maintenance to remove dead vegetation, and clear spouting and gutters to help prevent embers from igniting debris. For more safety tips and information go to: checkitsalright.nz/reduce-your-risk/protecting-your-property

Big Brothers Big Sisters of North Canterbury would like to give a BIG shout out to the Aotearoa Gaming Trust for their unwavering support of Big Brothers Big Sisters.

For many years, the Trust has provided crucial funding enabling our Mentoring Coordinators to create life-changing friendships - just like Vinnie (Little) and Brendan (Big) pictured below. The boys can't wait to get outside, look for lizards and explore nature on their weekly mentoring sessions!

We are incredibly grateful to be one of the beneficiaries of the Trust's socially responsible gaming operation and together, we are making a positive and lasting impact on the lives of vulnerable rangatahi, providing them the guidance and support they need to thrive.

Proudly Supported By

“Let’s Talk About….”

“Money is only a tool. It will take you wherever you wish, but it will not replace you as the driver.”

We run group chat sessions where we all talk about money and money-related subjects.

During these casual, one-hour coffee morning type discussions we explore our relationship with money.

There are nine topics which cover:

• Money

• Savings

• Debt

• Setting Goals

• Needs vs Wants

• Borrowing Sensibly

• Keeping Track of Your Money

• What’s out there?

• Paying it Forward.

Maybe we “hate” money because we feel that we have lost control - our money controls us.

How do we regain control?

Do you need a roadmap to transform your relationship with money?

You might be in a good headspace with “money” but would like to exchange ideas with others.

Peer Support

North Canterbury

Comcare Trust is a recovery focused organisation that provides free mental health and addiction services in the Waimakariri and Hurunui Districts for people with diagnosed mental illness and/or addiction . issues.

Peer Support: Peer Supporters in North Canterbury can meet regularly to provide one to one in person support as a fully mobile service within the Waimakariri and Hurunui districts. Comcare’s Peer Support Service supports people, through shared experience, to make sense of what is happening for them and how they want to move forward.

Peer Support helps people to understand each other because they’ve ‘been there’, shared similar experiences, and can model for each other a willingness to le arn and grow. In Peer Support, people come together with the intention of changing unhelpful patterns and getting out of ’stuck’ places. Promoting a ‘trauma -informed’ way of relating to ourselves, Peer Support pushes us to move towards. It focuses on what and where we want to be, rather than focussing on what we need to stop doing.

Referrals: Peer Support is for anyone aged 18+ who is experiencing mental distress and/or addictions. People can self -refer, be referred by SMHS, their GP or other community services. Visit www.comcare.org.nz /generic-referral to complete a referral.

For Peer Support, select “Support to understand how my mental health or addiction impacts me ” or “Support to understand my barriers to moving forward ” from the What support is required field.

Rangiora Museum

Join us for what should prove to be a special presentation at the Rangiora Museum, 29 Good Street, on Thursday 28 November. It is a film titled “100 Years of Farming in Coldstream.”

For the past 100 years, successive generations of four families have lived and farmed in Coldstream. This video tells the story of how, through sheer hard work and perseverance, they have transformed this district from virgin swamp into highly productive dairy farming land. As well as these four families, neighbouring farms and their owners are featured.

It is an interesting and at times amusing record of local history, one hour six minutes long. This will be a popular meeting, at 7.30pm.

The project has been partially funded by Creative Communities, Waimakariri, and orders will be taken for copies on the night. Free, and all welcome, although donations appreciated from non-members of the Rangiora Early Records Society. Supper served with the popular community chat.

The Museum is open Wednesdays and Sundays from 1pm to 4.30pm.

Volunteer Opportunities

Thinking of volunteering in our community, then look for an opportunity that will help you give as much as you will get back from the experience.

The Emergency Support Team (EST) is a group of dedicated locals that assist with the setting up and running of the local Civil Defence Centres, but also conduct welfare outreach programmes, assist with cordoning tasks, reconnaissance, opening community emergency hubs, and much more when the district’s needs are highest. The EST trains a minimum of once per month with additional exercises and community events throughout the year. The EST welcome newcomers to the team throughout the year.

We also have our own New Zealand Rescue Team (NZRT-12) based in the district that deals with technical rescues from buildings and in flood situations, vertical rescue, and flood protection activities.

The NZRT-12 team trains weekly (Wednesday evenings) throughout the year with additional exercises and community activities throughout the year.

NZRT-12 have a set recruitment period at the beginning of each year (FebruaryMarch) when they accept new members.

The type of training the two teams do are quite different but there is one thing in common – leadership and communication. These skills that are key to success when these teams are activated. Which is true in both the emergency response world and in everyday life – a skill that you can develop to enhance your everyday.

Among other topics the teams also do first aid training which can definitely help both your community and family.
