Community works together against virus Matt McCrorie Reporter
matt@waimeaweekly.co.nz
The Nelson and Tasman regions are already feeling the effects of coronavirus, or Covid-19, with community leaders and local em-
ployers holding a public meeting to discuss plans to deal with the global pandemic. The meeting, organised by Nelson MP Nick Smith, with Tasman Mayor Tim King and Nelson Mayor Rachel Reese, brought together community leaders and
businesses owners to discuss both health and business concerns on Thursday last week. Announced on Friday, one person has been confirmed to have Covid-19 in New Zealand. A further 18 people that were seated near the person have been con-
tacted and are in self-isolation. Nick Smith said at the meeting that the region is already starting to feel the effects of the virus that originated in mainland China, particularly when it comes to the forestry industry and tourism, as well as education.
Nick said that coronavirus is the “biggest risk to our regional economy this year,” and that the meeting was arranged to work with the community to figure out how best to support one another.

Community works together to prepare for coronavirus froM PAGE 1 Nelson Tasman Chamber of Commerce chief executive Ali Boswijk says that one of the main problems businesses are having is access to supply. “A lot of people are not being able to access supplies out of China. We’ve got a number of businesses that rely totally on China for their goods to run their businesses, so they’re the most vulnerable.” The forestry sector is another area which is seeing the trickledown effects of the virus. Dale Ewers, of Moutere Logging, says the Chinese wharves are bulging with timber that can’t be unloaded. “I know of three contractors here in Nelson that have lost their contracts. That’s potentially about 45 people out of work in the logging scene here, and that
has a flow-on effect to contractors and everyone to the corner dairy.” While the virus has had an impact on the forestry sector, Dale says that the Nelson and Tasman regions run 35-40 per cent export overseas. “The timing has been OK because there has been a bigger demand for domestic logs here in Nelson. We’ve transferred some of our cuts across to the domestic market, but that will have an impact in a couple months’ time.” Education is another part of the local economy facing the flow on effects of the virus. Chief executive of NMIT Liam Sloan says that 40 students from China haven’t been able to get here. The institution usually expects another 100 students to join throughout the year. Liam says there could be further impacts for local families. Seven-

ing students to make ends meet. The Nelson Marlborough DHB is also preparing for the virus to reach the region. Chief executive Peter Bramley says that the DHB wants to reassure the public that they are very busy behind the scenes doing lots of preparation. Chief Medical officer Nick Baker says that the good news was that some countries like Japan have managed to contain explosive growth for the virus. “We’ve got an emergency coordination centre and we’ve got some community emergency operations centres, looking at supplies of equipment and making sure that we’ve got plans for isolation and quarantine.” He says that people need to remember best practices like simply washing their hands and covering themselves when coughing and sneezing.

Community voices concerns for dam cost Matt McCrorie Last week it was announced that the Waimea dam would exceed its current budget by $25 million, bringing the total cost of the project up to to $129.4 million, after testing this year showed that rock meant to be used for drainage zones was not of a high enough quality to be used. Now, councillors and members of the community are expressing concern that there may be more cost blowouts ahead. Councillor Dana Wensley says that central government needs to step up. “Council just doesn’t have the ability to fund this. We need central government to step up.” Dana says that she has always been concerned about where the funding for the dam was going to come from. “Central government can’t encourage us to take on huge debt for projects like this and then walk away.” Other infrastructure projects in Richmond could suffer because of the increased cost of the dam, Dana says. “We didn’t do enough homework before we started to dig.
We didn’t de-risk it for rate payers, and this is what I was afraid of all along.” MP for Nelson Nick Smith says that the cost blowout is disappointing.

rock. I do think there needs to be a review into the quality of the investigation work.” Nick says that the need for the dam has not changed. “It’s a vital piece of infrastructure to support growth. “My concern is that $23.5 million is simply too much for the ratepayer to bear.” Nick says that the government should contribute $10 million towards the project, proportionate to the $40 million that the government committed to original $100 million dollar project. “New Zealand has a big infrastructure problem, and councils are only going to be able to overcome that by government partnering with councils. “The government announced $8 billion worth of infrastructure without a dollar coming to Nelson and Tasman. Asking for a $10 million contribution is a small portion of what we are due.” Waimea Water CEO Mike Scott that he is not aware of anything that would lead to the cost increasing beyond $129.4 million. “All of the issues and costs that we have seen to date are included in the $129.4 million.”

The coastal highway (SH60) was closed on Sunday 1 March, due to a serious crash between Upper Moutere and Tasman. Emergency services attended the scene of a two-car crash at around 3pm on Sunday. According to a police spokesperson, one person involved in the crash was understood to have moderate injuries. The crash blocked the highway, but it was reopened by 4:30pm.

Water Restrictions continue Water restrictions continue to be imposed across the Tasman district, until ‘significant rain’ falls. Acting Convenor of the Dry Weather Taskforce Rob Smith says that people should be aware that if there isn’t significant rain in the near future, restrictions will have to increase again. “In the meantime, we ask everyone to do their bit and conserve water wherever they can.” Currently, there are no changes in restrictions when it comes to public reticulated supply. Engineering services manager Richard Kerby says while there are no changes, people need to remember their obligations. “By doing your part now, you can help to avoid or delay the need for harsher restrictions.” At the moment, Phase B restrictions are in place for Richmond, Hope, Brightwater, Redwood Valley, Eighty-Eight Valley, and Dovedale. These restrictions mean you can’t water the laws or fill up or top up a pool. You can water veggie gardens and fruit trees with a hose, or a timer. Watering other gardens is allowed every second day. If your street address is an even number, water on even numbered days and likewise for odd numbers. Wakefield residents are currently facing phase A restrictions. This means that residents can’t fill swimming pools, but they can be topped up. Watering lawns is not allowed, but a hose can be used to water plants and veggie gardens.
Education grant empowers local women Matt McCrorie It was a pile of pamphlets on her desk that finally convinced Shona Bryant that it was time to become a teacher. The mum of two had been a teacher aide for over 10 years, when a colleague turned to her and asked, “Why are you not a teacher yet?” For Shona, who has two teenagers, cost was a big factor. “I went to the information night, and then the lovey Jacinda Arden said ‘would you like your first year free,’ and I just thought I had nothing to lose.” “I wouldn’t have done it if it wasn’t for that first year free. It’s a lot of money to spend, and with two kids it’s a lot of balls to juggle,” Shona says. Shona is this year’s recipient of the Waimea Soroptimist education grant, which has been made annually since 2013. The grant of $3000 goes towards a woman studying in a tertiary institute based in the NelsonTasman region. Soroptimist

International has a large focus on education for women, as it says educated women are more likely to leave a domestic violence situation and not return, be able to access healthcare, are less likely to live in poverty and be able to raise stronger, healthier families.
Shona, the recipient of this years’ grant, first got involved in education when her daughter was diagnosed with dyslexia. “That was when I started researching how I could support her learning,” Shona says. Around the same time, she became a teacher aide at her local
primary school, and her passion for education continued to grow. “I love helping the underdog. Helping those kids that seem to fall through the cracks.” Shona says that her work as a teacher aide has enabled her to see the bigger picture. “My biggest passion for education is for kids to achieve their own personal excellence. That was my biggest driver to become a teacher.” Annette Smith, who is on the selection committee for the education grant, said that Shona ‘stood out.’ “We had around 17 applicants, but Shona stood out. Her confidence stood out, and where she wanted to go really stood out to us,” Annette said. Shona, who is in her final year of study this year, says that the grant has made a huge difference for her, beyond the financial benefits. “I feel so empowered now. Getting the grant was huge for my confidence, it gives you this feeling that you are recognised and that you have worth.”

Nelson and Tasman take action on climate change Jonty Dine While a number of New Zealand regional councils have made a climate emergency declaration, it is Nelson leading the charge with its actions. Nelson and Tasman together hosted the very first ‘NelsonTasman climate forum’ at Annesbrook Church on Saturday, with more than 300 concerned citizens determined to make a change. Green Party leader and minister for Climate Change James Shaw opened the forum, which was a first of its kind for the country. “Nelson is really leading on climate change.” James says the “extraordinary gathering” is the first of what needs to be a number of serious community led discussions around climate change. “It’s not just about today, but what comes next.” The forum gave locals the opportunity “to join a critical conversation for our region’s future”. Oaklands Milk owner and Tasman Environment Award
winner Juliane Raine had an ongoing commitment to the environment and a better future. “This is a journey, it’s not

something we can change overnight.” Interim co-chair Julie Nevin instigated the forum and was blown away by the response. “It has exploded beyond all expectations.” She says the community must lead the way in identifying urgent strategic action to combat climate change. “The Government needs us to do this mahi as much as we need them to do theirs so this is a bridge between the community and governance.” The forum has been designed by the community to bring
Councils and iwi, businesses and community organisations, academics and individuals together. Also in attendance was ‘School Strike 4 Climate’ leader Raven Maeder and Nelson City Council’s climate champion Chris Cameron. Nelson Mayor Rachel Reese and Tasman Mayor Tim King were also both in attendance, showing their support for the forum. Nelson City Council declared a climate emergency on May 16 2019, “in recognition of the mounting advice from scientists and the United Nations that there is a small window for action to avoid the most damaging effects of climate change.” The Tasman District council has yet to declare a climate emergecny, but maintains that it is very aware of climate change and focused on action. The forum concluded with interactive workshops on all aspects of preventing and adapting to climate change. The Nelson Tasman Climate Forum will meet once a month with the next forum to be on March 14.

Riders with a cause Paw Justice teamed up with Harley-Davidson for the 4th annual “Ride for Justice” on Sunday 1st and it was a great turn-out. Meeting at Filco, the only dealership in the South Island supporting the ride, motorcycles of all types and sizes turned up. “I’m hoping with the $20 entry fee and the raffle we’ll be giving Paw Justice about $3,000
at the end of today,” said Perry Francis, Operation Manager for Filco. “The weathers perfect and it’s a great cause.” The nation-wide event will enable Paw Justice to continue to give animals a second chance. Started in 2009 by Craig Dunn and Shaughan Campbell after witnessing the appalling treatment of a dog called Eve (abandoned under a house for
six weeks without food or water) it has gone from strength to strength ever since. Paw Justice’s foodbank donates food to rescue shelters – an estimated one million meals so far, they rescue and re-home animals, educate and raise awareness of animal abuse and welfare issues in New Zealand. Ruth Collingham has always had a passion for singing. When she moved to Nelson two years ago, she knew she wanted to use her talents to help others. Ruth used to run a singing group in Wellington for a lung disease group and wanted to bring people together when she moved to Nelson. After approaching age concern, ‘Sing yourself well’ was born. The group exists to bring senior members of the community together once a week to sing together, but Ruth insists that the group isn’t a choir. “We’re not a choir. We are a group to help those who want to sing, sing. If you’re a great singer, you can join a choir. Our aim is to help people rediscover their voice.” Ruth says that a large focus for the group is around members ‘re-owning’ their voice and their body. “We usually sing for about an hour, but the point of the group is about social connection. “It’s just about doing something together, it doesn’t matter what It is, it’s a reason to get people out of the house to connect.” Singing together is unique though, and Ruth says that with singing, members have to contribute. “You are actively contributing, because we make you make a noise. You have to produce something, you’re part of a

able stand when they sing, it exercises their core muscles. For some people when they get older, they do less, but people have told us that because I make people put their hands in the air they get some great exercise out of it.”
Another key focus for the group is laughter. “We don’t do a lot of laughing as we get older,” Ruth says. “We’re quite good at finding things to keep older people occupied but being silly is something we all like. It’s important

Local cops connect with the community The Cops with Cakes event, described as the ‘safe as expo’ postponed from last year was held at Saxton Park on Saturday with a great turnout. With emergency services demonstrations, games, prizes and kids rides it was a great family fun day. There were free ‘çopcakes’ and BBQ for the kids and safety checks for car seats and bikes. Freya Smith 9 years old, who went with her family and best friend Elesha Copland had a great time. “We both got a teddy bear from the police and lots of other free stuff, and sat in a police car,” she said. For those needing a break from all the excitement, they could sit and watch those brave enough to put on a pair of Fatal Vision Goggles (simulates the effect of being under the influence of alcohol) and attempt the obstacle course. All the emergency services were represented giving the children an opportunity to see up close the vehicles from the fire brigade, various police cars, search and rescue and the ambulance service. Demonstrations included a kitchen fire and a safe stopping distance in a car.

To celebrate Te Ao Maori, on Friday 28th, Washbourn Gardens hosted its first Makete Po. Visitors could first browse the arts and crafts on display in the stalls before settling down with some freshly prepared local whitebait sandwiches or mussel patties and enjoy live music. Local Lewis Smith took up the family tradition of stone carving two years ago after first trying painting and wood carving. “My grandfather carved stone with hand tools,” said Lewis. “I started on stones he left and now I find my own in the rivers around Brightwater and the Maitai.” Business owners from the Nelson/ Marlborough region and all Iwi, were represented at the market and the businesses were both in their early stages and well established. Rebecca Mason from Ngati Kuia
said it’s all about giving the owner’s exposure and experience. “A Maori business network started about six months ago and the question was raised by many, ‘how do we get our products to market?’ and so the night markets were born. It’s about businesses coming together supporting and helping each other.” As well as food stalls visitors could buy jewelry, art and craft and meet and chat to the artists. Ronnie Gibson, from the Ministry of Social Development, hoped that the market offered locals something unique, fun and entertaining, along with something different to other types of markets they might go to. “It’s an opportunity for creative people to gain the skills and confidence to sell their products, all made using local materials and local practices, often passed down through the generations.”

New community centre for Richmond Matt McCrorie A new community centre recently opened in Richmond will be ‘invaluable’ to the community. The Holy Trinity Anglican Church, often known as ‘The Church on the Hill’ across from Richmond School had a formal blessing for it’s new community centre on February 21, and the new building is already an asset to the community. Shiona Frengley, one of the vol-
unteers who helps with the centre, says the new centre, which has office areas, meeting rooms, a modern kitchen and a hall that can accommodate 150 people, fills a specific gap in the community. “We have larger venues like Headingly Centre and smaller ones too, but there was nothing really of this size,” she says. The project was originally planned in 2005, when it was determined that the original hall,
first built in 1880, was too old sons are just a few of the comto repair. However, the global munity groups and activities that financial crises and rishave already started running out of the new coming building costs meant that the project was put munity centre. Age conon hold until 2016. While nect groups such as Tea the building was blessed and Talk and Sing yourself last month, groups have well have also being using the new space while their been operating out of the hall just days after it was own hall is being renoVicar completed in August last vated. new community centre,” Shiona says. “Venues like this build community,” Shiona says. “You have two groups using the building at once, and suddenly people who may not have connected otherwise have a chance to meet.” Shiona says that the rates for the venue have been set at an affordable level, and that essential it’s meant to sustain itself. “Our commitment to the community is to support all sorts of different groups.”
Richmond celebrates Children’s Day Richmond Aquatic Centre celebrated Children’s Day on Sunday 1st with fun activities in and out of the pool. For a gold coin entry, the Aquatic Centre along with the Tasman District Council had set up activities in the area outside the complex. The kids could play on a bouncy castle, take part in an obstacle course, get their face painted and try out silk swinging, all to live music. But Linda Mace from Just Gym found it was the simpler things that brought out the fun for the parents and kids. “I’ve just got some balls, buckets and hoops and the younger kids and their parents have had a great time,” says Linda. “It’s been lovely to see parents interacting with their children.”

Nelson Matters
The Nelson public meeting I hosted on the coronavirus with Mayors Rachel Reese and Tim King was sobering but informative. This global pandemic poses the greatest risk to our Nelson and Tasman region this year. The impacts are already being felt by our forestry, tourism and education sectors. Forest workers are having their hours cut and some will soon face redundancy. Local tourism businesses are already facing cancellations. NMIT is facing an income loss of $1.5m with Chinese students unable to travel. There is also concerns in the fruit industry about the thousands of refrigerated containers stuck in
Asian ports that are needed for exporting this season’s crop. Local manufacturers are concerned about the reduction of supply lines of essential components. Parts of the fishing industry like crayfish are being severely impacted by the stall in sales to China. New Zealand has now been confirmed to have its first coronavirus case with one of our citizens returning from Iran being treated and in quarantine at Auckland Hospital. Two Nelson passengers on the same flight from Bali are in self-isolation. Government’s response to the coronavirus was initially too slow. We were behind the US, UK and Aus-
tralia in screening flights and in advising New Zealanders of the travel risks. I have had Nelson constituents contact me concerned about the inadequacy of airport screening. We need to lift our game to do everything possible to stop the disease spreading. The Nelson Marlborough District Health Board has given good advice for how our region can best cope. We need to be extra cautious if we have flu like symptoms in not going to school, work, or other places where we could spread the disease. We need to be extra vigilant with washing our hands in warm soapy water. Someone who suspects they may have the disease
544 Waimea Road, Nelson
should not go unannounced to your doctor or hospitals for risk of spreading it. The Health Board is strongly encouraging people to get the flu vaccine prior to this winter, so as to reduce the pressures on our health system this winter so it is better able to cope with any cases of the coronavirus. They also wisely urge us to heed the advice from the Health Ministry website as the situation is uncertain and changing. People should be cautious of misinformation particularly on some social media. There were constructive ideas from the meeting. We should consider a domestic tourism promotion as Australia is doing with Govern-
ment support to encourage people to holiday locally in areas like Nelson and Tasman. Government needs to support small businesses in hard hit areas like forestry as National did in the Christchurch and Kaikoura earthquakes with a wage subsidy for a period if people start being made redundant. We may also need to consider supporting greater sick pay entitlements funded by Government if the disease does spread, so people will self-isolate, stay home and not spread the disease. We need to work together so as to protect people’s health, businesses and jobs as much as humanly possible. Advt.

Mission Expo 2020 - A call to everyone
Just a thought...
“We are called to participate in the mission of the Church given to us at Baptism” – Cardinal John Dew. The Wellington Catholic Archdiocese is dedicating 2020 as A Year of Mission. Cardinal John Dew will open the Top of the South Expo at Garin College at 11am on Saturday 21 March. The day will run from 11am to 2.30pm. The Mission Expo will showcase many of the missionary activities and opportunities that take place in our region. Display Booths – A number of local organisations regularly meet all kinds of needs, but they often “fly under the radar” and their missionary work may not be widely understood or recognised. Here is an opportunity to find out about these groups as their members explain what the groups do and how their activities fit with the Church’s mission. Some of those groups are: Faith and Light, Life Teen Summer Camps, Spiritual Direction, Spiritual Growth Ministries, Passionist

A Richmond Catholic Did you see anyone with ash on their forehead last Wednesday and wonder what the “smudge” was? Or did you know? For me, Ash Wednesday is the start of a journey to Easter when we will celebrate anew the Resurrection of Jesus. The cross is signed on our forehead and we begin again with renewed vigour to live our lives well. We are on a mission to be living members of our churches. We
hope that “you are touched by the infectiousness of our love, where joy and enthusiasm become the expression of a newfound meaning and fulfillment in life.” Pope Francis. We are called to serve and be involved in life. We all have gifts, God doesn’t make junk, and we are encouraged to use them, in our homes, schools, work, sports, leisure, churches, communities and our world. I am inspired by Cardinal John Dew a NZ Catholic Leader and our bishop. He is involved in so many areas of life, gives gener-
ously of his time and talents locally, nationally and internationally. He knows me, and calls me by name in whatever location or context I encounter him. So many people know this of him. He will be here in Richmond to open our Mission Expo at Garin College and this is a chance for you to see, hear and meet an extraordinary New Zealander. John, as he likes to be called, spoke at Waitangi Day this year and urged all New Zealanders to recommit to protecting the beliefs of followers of all religions
and of non-religious people. This tradition of religious freedom was first affirmed at the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi in 1840. John said, “The place for us to stand in Aotearoa New Zealand is where people need mercy, where they need to be treated with gentleness, where all hunger and thirst for what is right for all people, where we show mercy – the face of God to all.” Do come along to Our Mission Expo. You will be very welcome and I think you will find it really worthwhile. See you there!

The 2020 theme for International Women’s Day is ‘Creating an Equal and Enabled World.’ The commemoration allows women everywhere to celebrate the strides women have made across social, economic, political, and cultural spectrums. In New Zealand, Zonta Club of Wellington and UN Women Aotearoa have organised an event to celebrate International Women’s Day 2020 with speakers such as Hon Julie Ann Genter – Minister for Women, Tiana Epati – President of the New Zealand Law Society and Dr Lupe Taumoepeau – New Zealand’s first vascular surgeon. Other events will take place around the country on Sunday, March 8th including an opportunity for locals to hear 8 Nelson-Tasman CEOs or women working in non-traditional fields, tell their stories. Entitled ‘Feminist Fables: Smashing the Ceiling,’ those who attend the event will be supporting the wonderful work of the Nelson Women’s Centre. The speakers will include: Janine Dowding (CEO Tasman District Council, former head MSD Nelson), Gillian Wratt (Nelson Tasman Cycle Trails Trust chair, former Head NZ Antarctic Programme, former CEO Cawthron Institute) and Georgie Moleta (butcher and businesswoman – Georgie
Moleta Homekill Ltd). To find out more about the International Women’s Day gathering taking place at Founder’s Park this Sunday, visit the Nelson Women’s Centre’s Facebook page for more details. Local women’s networking ‘Your Tribe Collective’ is proudly supporting the event. “The Nelson Women’s Centre is our chosen charity for 2020,” says Tribe creator and Life Coach, Caron Proctor. “For us it’s about celebration, and sisterhood. It’s about creating a community that feels like family.” Caron’s coaching practise, Tribe and HERstory are her ‘roads to helping women smash through their own limiting beliefs, especially the ones picked up by societal pressures to conform.’ At Tribe, all members are given the oppor-

Community Patrol aims to help prevent crime and reduce harm through the active presence of patrollers in the community. Patrollers work closely with Police to be an extra set of eyes and ears.
Community Patrols are organised and operated by their local communities and raise their annual operating expenses through local grants, sponsorship and donations. Local ride a Triumph for motorbikes Staff Reporter The Nelson region saw more than 85 motorcycles roll into town over the weekend as part of a national event for dozens of Triumph enthusiasts. The 9th AGM of the national Triumph Riders Motorcycle Club, which was hosted by the Nelson Chapter, saw all shapes and sizes of the motorcycles parked up – from older bikes to the latest “rockets”, according to New Zealand Vice President Chris Harvey. Chris says the event was a great success with 110 attendees from as far away as Northland and Alexandra coming to town to take part in the club’s AGM and show off their bikes. The riders went out to Tapawera and Moutere on their bikes, and then back into the city for a dinner and charity auction at Smugglers, in Tahunanui, which raised more than $3500 for St Johns. “Everyone had a great time. It all went very smoothly,” says Chris. He says that Triumph enthusiasts have a saying: “For the ride.” “We just love Triumphs,” Chirs says. “ We have a real mix of people in

s w e N Rotoiti roars g n i h s Fi with powerboat Make the most of competition your fishing trip Dominik Berghamer The Dawnbreakers Fishing Club is hosting the annual Snapper Cup this weekend. Over a hundred anglers will be competing for over $12.000 worth of prizes. Snapper (and Kingfish) catches over the last couple of weeks have been excellent, if the weather plays along there should be plenty of fish to be seen at the weigh in. Whether you have entered into the competition or are just after some tasty fish for the family, here a few tips and tricks to make the most of your fishing trip: • Get up early: Change of light usually is the best time for a good haul, make sure your boat’s lighting is compliant and works before heading out in the dark. • Get the tides right: Snapper love a good current flowing and feed less during slack tides. • Keep the noise down: Snapper are easily spooked, especially in shallow water, avoid all
knocking, stomping and anchor chain rattling, especially on aluminium boats. • Use burley: the more the better, if fishing in deeper waters deploy your burley bomb a few metres off the bottom. • Try different methods: Flasher rigs and stray lines are the classic ways to go but slow jigs and softbaits are well worth a try too, you could even try a small to medium sized live bait to mix things up a bit.
The weather gods smiled on the ENZED Rotoiti Powerboat Club regatta held over the weekend and Thousands of people from the Tasman region and beyond flocked to the Rotoiti National Park for a stunning weekend of racing. Club spokesman Joe Blakiston said the nine GP hydroplanes racing in the Hydro Thunder Series were the stars of the show however exciting racing was the order of the day in all
classes. Event organisers had a few surprises for the huge crowd with an aerial display at lunchtimes as well as a record setting Mexican Wave across the foreshore on Sunday. Ken Lupton, racing in the Lucas Oils 577 Hydro Plane continued his dominant season in edging brother Jack out in an exciting Arthur Mccaa Memorial Trophy race which saw five Go Hydroplanes racing to-
wards the first turn buoy close to shore. Local drivers Lee Merrion and Julian Stilwell both took away silverware in the Railway Cup and Pelorus Jack Trophy. Club President Chris Dufeu thanked the Department of Conservation and all volunteers for their efforts to put on such a well supported event “It’s absolutely massive for Tasman and to see such a huge crowd was very satisfying.”
• Try different baits: Squid and pilchards are the usual suspects but you may want to try fresh fish (the oilier the better), crabs, prawns or mussels. • Use light gear: The big old fish are clever and shy. Light lines greatly improve your chances of hooking into a trophy fish. Make sure you are using high quality gear, large Snapper and the omnipresent Kingfish are tremendously powerful. Check your leader after every fish, if in doubt, tie a new one! Tight lines!

Gale set to take on the world Jacob Page
Wakefield’s Sam Gale is making a habit of exceeding his own expectations. The 18-year-old former Waimea College student turned scaffolder will head to Portugal later this month to compete in the down
hill mountain bike world championships in the elite class. He is fresh off finishing second in the four-round National series which he hopes will put him in good stead for his third stint in Europe. Gale is aiming for a top 30 finish in the elite class. It’s been a big year for the teen-
ager who though a post-surgery infection had ruined his chances to compete internationally in the middle of last year. “Turns out I healed really quickly so I was able to compete. It definitely helps knowing I can come back from a big injury and still compete to a high level. I just want
to ride smooth and trust my abilities. Knowing some of the tracks and knowing how to get over jetlag will be a big plus.” Gale said he trains six days a week but can struggle to balance work with his passion. “I hope to one day be a world champion.”
Marty making his mark for Wanderers A year into his role as Director of Sports at Wanderers, Marty Davis is starting to see all of his hard work paying off. Marty will be the first to tell you it is not just him putting in the hard yards either, with a dedicated volunteer base keen to keep the Brightwater-based club, which also services Hope and Wakefield, in good shape as it enters its 71st year. However, with the club involving rugby, cricket and netball, Davis has to wear a several different hats every day. “The main part of the role is to increase participation at all levels which we have done, but it’s been challenging. “If you look at cricket, we are back in the premier competition, and in rugby we’ll have an under-18 team this year which we couldn’t quite manage last year, and while the netball has been a challenge we are looking to address it,” Marty says. “We need the collaboration between the schools, the
club and the athlete so that it “There’s a great support netmeets the needs of the peo- work here with the commuple and that’s where I think nity wanting the club to do we have fallen down in the well which is a big plus. past.” “There’s a renaissance going Marty says that keeping fo- on with this club.” cus on the future of the club He said the premier cricket will be the key to continued merge of Wanderers and success. He also believes in trying to keep the rugby, cricket, netball and squash arms all feeling like they are part of the club. “That will involve changing our constitution because everything is currently in the name of the rugby club and it needs to be trimmed and updated so everyone has an equal share in things,” Marty says. “We know the direction we want to go in and we just need the buy-in. “We have 15 cricket teams and 16 rugby teams, there are cities in New Zealand that can’t boast that.” He says success, in his opinion, has nothing to do with results on the field. “We have to have the coaches in place when the players arrive - we can’t do it the other way around. “We also must have the finances to continue to develop players across all sports,” Marty says. “To me, I feel like I’ve won lotto,” he said. “It’s a great little set-up out here and it can only go one

tied on points with Hill. It was a just reward for the everimproving 95n driver. The championship attracted 18 cars from around the country, Rotorua, Hawkes Bay, Dunedin, Christchurch and Palmerston North all being represented. It was a good boost from the usual line-up with numbers dropping in the South Island. Wayne Hemi has won every trophy in the book except the South Island title, but his attempt ended early with steering issues in heat one. Regular visitor and former national champion, William Humphries struck trouble in heat two with a flat rear tyre ruining his chances. Malcolm Ngatai was the other former New Zealand champion competing but his points tally was only enough to claim third. Most of the drivers will be returning on Easter Friday for
after their final round of racing, while the Tasman Thunder were luckless at the New Zealand stock car teams title in Stratford. The brutal championship taking its toll on drivers and machinery. The event shifts to Wellington next year after the Capital team won the title. Former Waimea College student Jeremy Webb added to his impressive trophy haul with the North Island TQ title. He became the first driver to hold both North and South Island titles after the entry rules were changed this year. Alex Hill on his way to winning the South Island Super stock title. A bit of help from Phil Krammer also helped after he held up former South Island title holder Jordan Dare in the final heat, gave Hill the points gap he needed. na Harris and Ben Van Dyke. Many of the region’s top swimmers were occupied with pool competition, so didn’t compete in the 3.8km event. In last year’s Big Tahuna, Kelly, Fergus Drummond, Alec Swan and Bayley took the first four spots, with Squance in seventh, Abbey Smale (the first woman) in eighth and Thomas in ninth. That’s seven of the top ten. It doesn’t seem likely that Nelson swimmers can better that, although all seven of
those swimmers will be there and looking to dominate. The region’s swimmers will be looking for medals in the age groups, Particularly with the like of Terry Bone (M4549), Hamish Neill (M55-59), Christina Harris (F55-59) and Derek Eaton (M75-79) in dominant form. The scene is set for some great racing next Saturday as swimmers from around the country try to knock the Nelson swimmers off their perch.
Evergreens softball heading to Saxton Jacob Page Saxton Field will host the 57th annual National Evergreens Softball tournament on Friday and Saturday. More than 400 over-35 players will represent 16 provinces at the annual event which will see Saxton’s four softball diamonds in full use for two days. It is the biggest softball tournament held annually in New Zealand. Nelson president Alex Oliver says the tournament will see a number of former national
representatives turn out for their provinces. “The standard of softball will be very high, and while it is a social affair, teams still want to win it. Southland won the event last year and Oliver said they along with Wairarapa and Wellington would be favourites again. He said the Nelson team would be competitive and would try to ride their luck.” The final will be at 4pm on Saturday. “It’s a big organisation I know myself I’m a coach of a team,
manager of a team and president so it’s all go but it’ll be a great weekend.” Oliver says there are rules to avoid injury like no bunting and no stolen bases. “When you’ve got guys from 35 to 65-years-old it’s important. “I’ve been a pitcher all my life, been playing in this for as long as I can remember so it’s about playing some good softball and catching up with mates. “There’s a competitive edge but we’re all having a chuckle and a laugh at the same time.”

Please check your water restrictions At the time of printing, Phase B restrictions are in place for Richmond, Hope, Brightwater, Redwood Valley, EightyEight Valley, Dovedale and Māpua/Ruby Bay. This means you can’t fill or top up pools or water the lawn. You can still water the veggie garden but non-productive gardens must only be watered every second day, with a hand-held hose, timer system or bucket. If your address is an even number, water on even numbered days and likewise for odd days. While Phase A restrictions are in place in Wakefield and Tapawera. That means residents are not permitted to fill swimming pools, but they can be topped up. Watering grass and lawns is not allowed but as long as you use a hand-held hose you can still water your plants and veggie gardens and wash cars if it’s really needed. Various restrictions are also in place for water permit holders around the district. If any restrictions apply to you, we will have sent you a message letting you know what your current restrictions are. However, the situation can change quickly if we receive rain, so please check the website for the most up to date information, tasman.govt.nz/link/water-restrictions. Even if you aren’t currently affected by water restrictions, please conserve water as much as possible.

Speed Limits Bylaw 2016 Review Consultation We want our local roads to be safe. Making sure the speed limit is appropriate for the conditions is an important part of a safe roading network, so we have been reviewing the limits across Tasman District. In November 2019 we consulted on a Speed Limit Review, submissions identified that a different speed than what we had proposed was wanted for three roads (Gibbs Valley Road, Hoddy Road and Wharariki Road). Legally, we are not able to set a speed limit significantly different to what was proposed in the consultation, so those roads were withdrawn from that process and we are now asking for feedback on the newly proposed speed limits. • Gibbs Valley Road – current limit is 100kmph, proposed to change to 60kmph • Hoddy Road – current limit is 100kmph, proposed to change to 40kmph • Wharariki Road (Freeman Access to western end) – current limit is 100kmph, proposed to change to 60kmph We are also proposing to extend an existing 50km/h speed limit on Abel Tasman Drive in Pōhara 25m to tie in better with the new shared path location and increased activity by the café. This results in a proposed speed limit set 75m from Selwyn Street. Get all the details at your nearest Council office or library or on the website, tasman.govt.nz/feedback. Submissions are invited until 4.00pm on Monday 30 March 2020. Submissions should include your name, full contact details and should state if you wish to speak to the Council in support of your submission.

Calling all Kingsland Forest users! Consultation closes 6 March 2020. If you have been in the habit of walking the dog (or yourself ), running, or riding in Kingsland Forest, we’d love to hear from you. Tasman District Council is proposing to gradually retire Kingsland Forest from commercial forestry as trees mature and are harvested over the next 20 years. We're thinking of replanting in a mix of native and permanent exotic trees, allowing us to progressively improve recreational tracks and facilities over time. We’d like to hear what the individuals who usually use the area think about this plan. Have your say: We want to know what you think of the draft Kingsland Forest Development Plan. More information is available online at tasman.govt.nz/ feedback, and at Council offices and libraries.
What do you love about your local parks? Consultation closes 31 March 2020. We’re reviewing the way we manage Moutere/Waimea Ward parks and reserves, and we need your help to make sure these public spaces suit locals and visitors now and in the future. Tell us which reserves you use regularly, what you love about them, and any changes you would like to see to the way they are used or managed. The most important thing we want to know is: What’s your vision for their future?
