Mission Expo 2020 - A call to everyone

Just a thought...

“We are called to participate in the mission of the Church given to us at Baptism” – Cardinal John Dew. The Wellington Catholic Archdiocese is dedicating 2020 as A Year of Mission. Cardinal John Dew will open the Top of the South Expo at Garin College at 11am on Saturday 21 March. The day will run from 11am to 2.30pm. The Mission Expo will showcase many of the missionary activities and opportunities that take place in our region. Display Booths – A number of local organisations regularly meet all kinds of needs, but they often “fly under the radar” and their missionary work may not be widely understood or recognised. Here is an opportunity to find out about these groups as their members explain what the groups do and how their activities fit with the Church’s mission. Some of those groups are: Faith and Light, Life Teen Summer Camps, Spiritual Direction, Spiritual Growth Ministries, Passionist

A Richmond Catholic Did you see anyone with ash on their forehead last Wednesday and wonder what the “smudge” was? Or did you know? For me, Ash Wednesday is the start of a journey to Easter when we will celebrate anew the Resurrection of Jesus. The cross is signed on our forehead and we begin again with renewed vigour to live our lives well. We are on a mission to be living members of our churches. We

hope that “you are touched by the infectiousness of our love, where joy and enthusiasm become the expression of a newfound meaning and fulfillment in life.” Pope Francis. We are called to serve and be involved in life. We all have gifts, God doesn’t make junk, and we are encouraged to use them, in our homes, schools, work, sports, leisure, churches, communities and our world. I am inspired by Cardinal John Dew a NZ Catholic Leader and our bishop. He is involved in so many areas of life, gives gener-

ously of his time and talents locally, nationally and internationally. He knows me, and calls me by name in whatever location or context I encounter him. So many people know this of him. He will be here in Richmond to open our Mission Expo at Garin College and this is a chance for you to see, hear and meet an extraordinary New Zealander. John, as he likes to be called, spoke at Waitangi Day this year and urged all New Zealanders to recommit to protecting the beliefs of followers of all religions

and of non-religious people. This tradition of religious freedom was first affirmed at the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi in 1840. John said, “The place for us to stand in Aotearoa New Zealand is where people need mercy, where they need to be treated with gentleness, where all hunger and thirst for what is right for all people, where we show mercy – the face of God to all.” Do come along to Our Mission Expo. You will be very welcome and I think you will find it really worthwhile. See you there!
