Air NZ fares continue to soar Matt McCrorie Reporter
matt@waimeaweekly.co.nz
Locals are concerned about a sharp rise in prices from Air New Zealand in the period since Jet-
star pulled out of the region on 30th November, 2019. Information obtained from Nelson airport under the official information act reveals increased airfare prices from Nelson since the departure of Jetstar. The air-
port monitors airfares every day, for the price of a booking the next day, as well as bookings 30 days prior to travel, both inbound and outbound. Analysis shows that in December 2019, a return fare to Auckland
from Nelson, booked a day in advance, had gone up by $131. The same fare booked 30 days in advance had risen by $99. Nelson MP Nick Smith says that he was ‘appalled’ by the hike in airfares.
“I have been inundated with complaints from Nelsonians feeling ripped off,” he says. “Constituents are annoyed at being bombarded with adverts from

Air NZ fares continue to soar fRom PAGE 1 Air New Zealand offering cheap fares to Australia and the world, but not being able to get around their own country at affordable prices”. Airfares in and out of Nelson to Wellington and Auckland were hiked up an average 18 per cent in December 2019, compared to December 2018, when Jetstar was still operating out of the region. “I’ve had so many people contact me – older people who need to fly for health reasons, a university student who had to pay $531 for a return fare from Wellington.” One reader, who contacted the Waimea Weekly but wishes to remain anonymous, commutes to Auckland regularly. The commuter books their flights 4 months in advance, and in March 2019, booked 16 return flights from
Nelson to Auckland. Booked 4 months in advance, the total cost was $2196 – averaging at $137 per trip. In March 2020, for the same number of flights booked in advance, the cost was $2286 – that’s $142 each. In April 2019, the commuter paid $1999 for the month, averaging at $133 per trip for 15 flights – but for April this year there is a sharp increase. For just 13 flights, booked four months in advance, the commuter paid $2435 – that works out to be $187 for each trip. “When you book 4 months in advance, flights should be cheaper, but their starting rate seems to be higher – that’s what I feel like I’m noticing here,” said the commuter. Another commuter, Tracy Richmond, says she has been frustrated with the cost to fly to Auckland.
See instore for SPECIALS 199 Queen St, Richmond
“Depending on my travel requirements, it can cost up to $500. I travel every week for work and even booking in advance makes little difference. You can’t book impromptu flights for a getaway or surprise visit; I can’t afford to fly my kids down from Auckland for a weekend- it’s become impossible with cost. At least with having Jetstar there was some competition for them.” Kate Neame agreed, saying that she used to be able to get $39 fares to Wellington up to a couple of weeks out. “I’ve just had to book for May (months away) at $376 return.” Another concern for locals is reduced capacity. Analysis shows that new flights added by Air New Zealand don’t cover the gap left by Jetstar’s departure. The four Jetstar flights per day from Auckland have been offset by
only one new flight per day from Air New Zealand, while the three Jetstar flights per day from Wellington have been offset by only one new flight per day. Robert Inglis, head of Originair, who have recently announced a Nelson to Wellington service, says that it’s important for travellers to have a choice. “We’ve had travellers lobbying us for another choice. They have had the Jetstar option, and now that they’re gone it’s natural that people are looking for options “ “The combination of this big hike in fares and this significant loss of capacity is a serious worry for the Nelson economy”, says Nick. He is currently taking advice on lodging a formal complaint with the Commerce Commission. “I have also sought a meeting with Air New Zealand. I am proud of our national carrier and
want it to succeed in the world, but also want it to give a fair deal to regions like Nelson,” Nick said Air New Zealand’s external communications manager Anna Cross said in a statement that, in December the carrier offered more than 22,000 seats on Nelson routes for under $100, compared to less than 17,000 at the same time last year. She said that Jetstar’s withdrawal, coming as it did heading into peak season, “really challenged our teams to identify available aircraft and slots”. Anna said its December flights filled up faster than usual and the cheapest seats tended to sell out first. “We always encourage our customers to book early to take advantage of best available fares, especially heading into the busy festive season.”
Richmond takes the crown for sunshine hours
Suzuki GSF650
Matt McCrorie It’s offical, Richmond is New Zealand’s sunniest town. Richmond has taken the crown for the most sunshine hours in 2019, coming in with a recorded total of 2859. According to a climate summary issued by NIWA, 2019 was the 4th warmest year on record in New Zealand, with the nationwide average temperature for 2019 at 13.37°C, 0.76°C above average. 2016 remains New Zealand’s hottest year on record, with 1998 and 2018 tied for second equal. Richmond experienced the most sunshine hours with 2859, followed by Blenheim with 2799 hours, and Napier with 2709. Tasman mayor Tim King says that it’s a nice accolade. “It’s not something those of us who live here don’t already know.” While some Blenheim residents might be a bit upset after narrowly losing, Tim says it’s all a bit of fun. “It’s a good bit of inter-regional banter.” Tim says. “It’s not the sort of thing you take too seriously, but it is nice to win. “It’s great for visitors, and a lot

The fire doubled in size overnight and a State of Emergency continued until February 27. At the end of February, several dry spells came to an end. The Nelson/Tasman region suffered a 40-day long dry spell, the 4th-longest on record, (with records extending back to 1862), while Hamilton and Tauranga had 36 consecutive dry days.

Schools good to go with infrastructure boost Matt McCrorie It’s the start of the school year, and parents around the region are surely relieved. But local schools are gearing up for a busy year with a huge range of infrastructure upgrades. In December last year the government announced a $396million funding boost for schools throughout the country, with each school receiving between a maximum of $400,000 and a minimum of $50,000, depending on roll sizes. The funding boost is part of the government’s $12billion Kiwi Infrastructure programme, which will see neglected infrastructure such as roads, schools and hospitals upgraded. Schools need to spend the money within two years. Richmond School principal
Tim Brenton says that the school is starting with a similar roll to last year, and that the school is undertaking some major projects. “Our major project using the government’s property allocation will be to replace some of our hardcourt areas.” Tim says that this improvement will be a significant one. “In the last 15 years we have had to patch and repair damaged hardcourt areas, now we can finally get it done right.” The school will receive $325,017 as part of the infrastructure boost. Waimea College has increased its roll this year, with construction on its new teaching block making great progress. The $4.4million project for a new state-of-the-art teaching block was announced in 2017, but delays meant that the project won’t be finished

Step forward for Salisbury School Fire and Emergency ask people to check historic burn sites
until later this year. Waimea College added six temporary classrooms in November 2018 to counter the dire shortage of teaching spaces as the school’s roll has steadily increased over the last few years. St Paul’s principal Maureen Philllips says the Catholic school is continuing to grow, “Our roll has steadily increased over the last three years, from 230 to 290.” Maureen says that the school is undertaking several building projects to accommodate further growth. Two projects are scheduled for the year, a multi-purpose teaching space and the refurbishment of a five-class block, with the funding for these projects coming from the Catholic school system. “This refurbishment will see us with a new, modern-learning environment.”
The current hot, dry and windy conditions have reignited some historic burns over the weekend. Fire and Emergency ask that if you have had a large burn-off, pit burn or heavy fuel burn (logs or stumps) in the past six weeks, please check they are fully extinguished to prevent the risk of a fire flaring up. Go to www.checkitsalright.nz for more information about how you can reduce the risk of fire.
New year, old scams

Police are reminding New Zealanders to be extra vigilant when receiving unsolicited phone calls, especially when the caller asks for personal details or money. Several scams are operating nationwide at any one time and, while some of the details vary, the general premise is often the same. In one recent case, a man lost $57,000 to a caller claiming to be from Spark. The man was told his internet would be disconnected unless he logged onto his computer and followed their instructions. In another common scam, a woman narrowly escaped losing more than $12,000 after receiving a call about suspicious bank transaction. The woman was told she had been overpaid by the bank when it reimbursed her for purchases, she hadn’t made. Fortunately, the bank was able to put a stop to the transfer. While it’s a new year, police advice remains the same. Never automatically trust someone over the phone or online who you haven’t met in person. If you receive a call from someone purporting to be from a business, ask them for credentials and never hand over personal details.
Friday marked a special moment in the life of Salisbury School, with the mihi whakatua for the school’s new principal, Ellie Salcin-Watts. Appointed last year, Ellie is taking the reins as head of the all-girls school this year. Ellie has both hands-on and management experience in learning support and, as the school’s deputy principal for five terms, she has a good understanding of the school and its students. There was a sense of connectivity on Friday morning with local dignitaries, the Hon Dr Nick Smith, the Hon Damien O’Connor, Nelson’s Labour candidate Rachel Boyack, and TDC councillor Kit Maling, all showing up for the welcome ceremony, along with staff, board members, and former principal Maria Robinson. Maria was principal from 1987 to 1999, and Ellie acknowledged Maria and previous principals, as well as her predecessor Brenda Ellis. “I stand on your shoulders,” she said. “In my whaikorero today I used the word ‘pivotal’ to describe the new era Salisbury is entering, as well as the new professional journey I am embarking on,” Ellie said. “This moment brings great joy and excitement, and Fri-
How NMIT opens doors to industry Most students can only dream of leaving school early and walking into the career that they have always wanted. But that’s exactly what Clayton Anderson did, with the help of NMIT and Nelson construction company Gibbons Naylor. Clayton didn’t particularly enjoy the academic side of school, but he was a natural when it came to practical skills. He aspired to one day be a builder, so he signed up for the Trades Academy at NMIT while he was still at Waimea College. The Trades Academy is for students who want to stay in school to complete NCEA, but are ready to start training for a real job. Clayton would attend the Trades Academy on Fridays, working towards a National Certificate in Trades, while going to school the rest of the week. Trades Academy students work in NMIT’s carpentry barn and enclosed construction yard where they learn real-world skills that prepare them for jobs, apprenticeships or further study. Students learn skills like making pre-framed walls, installing windows, hanging doors, and how to interpret plans and create drawings for building projects. They are also given a lot of freedom to pursue their own projects and a highlight for Clayton was building a large ken-
nel for his hunting dogs at home. Clayton was quickly identified as a student who showed a lot of promise, both in terms of his practical skills and attitude. Trades Academy tutor Richard Shepherd knew that Gibbons Naylor was looking for a new apprentice and so he recommended Clayton. At the age of 16, Clayton started as an apprentice with Gibbons Naylor while studying for the New Zealand Certificate in Carpentry (Level 4) at NMIT. “It’s pretty rare. There’s probably only two or three learners that I’ve come across at that age in the last five years that had the ability to do that,” says NMIT Construction Tutor Steve McIntyre. “It is a big step to go from school to industry. We were happy to help Clayton get there.” Clayton says he enjoys the balance of completing his online portfolio and learning new practical skills at NMIT. He says that Gibbons Naylor has also been really supportive during the first year of his apprenticeship. “They help you through and put you with the right guys, match you with people with skills they can teach you. We also get hearing checks, skin checks and a dental plan.” Business Update. Adv.

Photo: Supplied. day’s mihi was a wonderfully warm platform on which to celebrate our school community and the beginning of this new chapter.” Salisbury School Board chairperson Emma Thompson said the board was excited about the school’s future and confident in Ellie’s ability
to lead the school on its journey to this new and exciting era. “There is hard mahi ahead of us as we build a new school and implement changes to the enrolment process to grow our roll. Our vision is that ‘every girl succeeds’, and Ellie shares this vision whole-
heartedly. We know that she will continue to bring this vision to life for all of our students.” Late last year, Education Minister Chris Hipkins announced an $8million construction budget to replace the school’s classrooms and rundown accommodation. The school for girls aged 8-15, in Richmond, was earmarked for closure by the last government until the process was stopped by Chris Hipkins in 2017. The school is New Zealand’s only single-sex residential school for girls with complex needs, and the board say that they are thrilled about the planned multi-million dollar rebuild to replace its aged buildings. The school was created in 1917 and is one of three residential special schools in New Zealand for students with highly complex behaviour or learning needs that impact their lives at home, school and in the community. Almost all of the school’s buildings are more than 50 years old and much of it over 90 years old. The redevelopment, which is expected to begin in 2021, will see the demolition and replacement of the existing residential and ancillary buildings, administration block and day school.

Colourful crop rotation proves popular Susan Johnson Waimea Nurseries’ field of sunflowers might have attracted a lot of people taking selfies, but they weren’t there just to provide a backdrop for a great photo. When the young trees have been removed from a field, the nursery rests the field for a year to allow for regeneration and put in plants that have been carefully chosen to assist this process. Dan Manuge, Waimea Nurseries field services manager, was responsible for choosing the plants. “It is essentially a green manure crop that is mulched and allowed to decompose in the field, providing the soil with carbon and other essential nutrients for the next crop of trees,” he says. “We are limited on the land we have so we need to look after it properly. According to Dan, Waimea Nurseries have around 250 hectares of green field, and just over 100 hectacres might be in cover crop (resting). “We grow pea straw for our own
use, to pack around the base of the fruit trees to reduce moisture loss and also for packing the trees during shipping,”Dan says. Waimea Nurseries grow trees which are sold to orchards and garden centres nationwide. They are grown for one to two years, and dug up in winter. The sunflowers, along with crimson clover, vetch and others, produce flowers and provide a habitat and pollen for beneficial insects like parasitic wasps which kill insects like caterpillars and aphids that damage the trees, reducing the need for insecticide sprays. Dan explains that plants like mustard, with its bright yellow flower, are sown for its natural fumigation of soil pathogens. Other plants such as blue lupins are nitrogen-fixing plants which take nitrogen from the air and transfer it into the ground. “Essentially, putting back what we take out,” says Dave Harris, container nursery manager. “We might plant a deep-rooting species which grow a deep tap root, and we cut them off at the top and the tap root rots down
and leaves a pathway for drainage,” says Dave. Dave says that one of the benefits of the planting is that they can reduce the chemicals they use. “No chemicals are used and if you increase the organic matter in the soil you increase its ability to hold more water.” But it wasn’t just crowds of locals and holidaymakers that found the sunflowers irresistible. The nurseries had a call from a nearby beekeeper, who was having trouble tracking down swarms of his bees that had been disappearing. After he traced them to the Waimea Nurseries sunflower field, he was very keen to know what field they would be in next year as he intended to place his hives as close to that paddock as he could. Forestry plantation areas closed as temperatures soar Jacob Page The Tasman District Council has closed access to forestry plantation areas at Kingsland Forest, Moturoa/ Rabbit Island, Rough Island and Tunnicliff Forest due to high temperatures. With continued hot dry weather, and after seeking advice from Fire and Emergency New Zealand, the decision was made with public safety in mind. The closures affect the forestry plantations in the reserves only, at this time. Access to the beach, picnic areas and equestrian park at Moturoa/ Rabbit Island and Rough Island remains open for now. The decision to close access is made to protect public safety as the BUI (Build Up Index)* is now above 80. A key factor in deciding to close
these areas is the risk of anyone in the reserves being overrun by fire before they can escape. Fire travels exponentially faster on uphill slopes than it does on flat ground and forest areas burn more intensely. Signage will be in place at all the closed areas so please take note and stay out for your own safety. The lower reserve areas below Kingsland Forest (Easby Park and Dellside) remain open for now, but people are advised to visit the reserves early in the morning or in the evening, when the fire risk is lower. The Great Taste Trail coastal access route at Moturoa/Rabbit Island also remains open at this time. The Tasman District Council will assess the situation weekly and further closures may be needed if weather conditions remain the same. Firefighters battle last Februar y ’s blaze in Pigeon Valley. Ivan’s long walk for life Jonty Dine
The trauma stemming from a sexual assault as a child eventually took its toll on Ivan Miller when he was 32. “It just caught up with me and I had a major breakdown,” he says. Hospitalised and heavily medicated, Ivan says he was stuck in a ‘Groundhog Day of misery’ for seven years starting in 2003.” Ivan turned to drugs and alcohol and wanted to end his life. After multiple stints in the Nelson Mental Health Unit, Ivan eventually met a friend who helped him turn things around. He suggested Ivan take an art course at NMIT, which he now says saved his life. “It put structure back in my day and gave me a social life which I had lost while I was ill.” He says it gave him an outlet to express everything he was feeling. One by one, Ivan came off his medications, learnt different strategies to cope when things got hard, and says he slowly got his life back. At the end of 2018, Ivan was living in Kerikeri when he lost his job due to a work restructure and saw it as the perfect opportunity to do something special. To help raise finds and awareness for mental health, Ivan set out to circumnavigate the country on foot.
Ivan Miller is currently walking the length and breadth of the country to raise awareness for mental health. Photo: Jonty Dine. “I had this idea of walking around New Zealand and I was ready to do it,” Ivan says. “So I sold all my stuff and just headed out.”
Having done no training and very little exercise in his life, Ivan says it was a bit of a shock to the system at first. “By the time I got to 90 Mile
Beach I knew I had to keep going.” Now, 12 months on, Ivan is still on his journey, having covered 3900km with about 2000km and
six months to go. “My biggest priority was to connect with New Zealanders and open a conversation around mental health,” Ivan says. “Because it’s something that is not talked about enough.” His journey across the country hasn’t been without plenty of adversity though. “Winter was a mental challenge more than anything else,” Ivan says. “Camping out in the frost, the coldest night was minus 6 degrees on the West Coast of the South Island.” In Fox Glacier he was caught in a storm and stranded for three weeks. “I couldn’t go north or south, there were 100,000 lighting strikes one night which was the most terrifying thing of my life, but I survived it.” He has been inundated with offers along the way from people taking his pack to the next stop. And Ivan says that nowdays his mental health is fantastic. “I was in a very good place when I started but it’s just grown.” He says he doesn’t even think about walking anymore, his legs “just do it”. “I don’t know how I am going to stop when I get to Cape Reinga,” Ivan says. You can follow Ivan’s journey ‘Walking for Life’ on Facebook.

A great turnout for the 13th Sarau Festival Susan Johnson Almost 4,500 people turned up at the community centre in Upper Moutere to celebrate the annual Sarau Festival. The weather was just about perfect for the 13th year of the festival and the crowd had plenty to see and do on Sunday. From craft beers and artisan food to trying out a bouncy castle and face painting for the kids, visitors could spend time strolling around the stalls until they were ready to relax with the live bands and artists that would entertain the crowd into the evening. The name Sarau is a nod to the Germans that settled in the Upper Moutere district and had called the village Sarau. During the First World War the name was changed to Upper Moutere. This year the proceeds from the festival are going towards the Upper Moutere community centre.

Murchison set to celebrate 100 years of the A&P Show Jacob Page Things are getting busy in Murchison this week, as the town prepares to celebrate its 100th A and P Show next weekend. It was a travelling salesman for Buxtons Ltd who canvassed the area in 1909 and came up with the suggestion that it would be a good idea if the town had an an-
nual show. The first show was held March 17, 1911 and included exhibits of stock, vegetables, domestic produce and flowers. There were horse events, dog trials, athletic sports and axemen’s events. The show was a great success and was followed by a ball at night. Music for the ball was supplied
by Miss Mary Hunter’s orchestra which included William Hunter, Mrs Ernie White and Joe Goodyer. The first show grounds were in Charles Downie’s paddock in Grey Street. Tents for the show were hired from Buxton’s store in Nelson. The dairy factory was new at the time and pedigree cows were be-
ing bought into the district for the show. The cows had arrived the night before the show, so all had to be milked by hand on the grounds. A night watchman was present in the cookery tent to keep all the stray cats out. The ball was a grand affair with many people dancing until dawn, when they had to go and milk.
These shows were organised by the Farmers Union Show Committee. It was then decided to run shows under the A & P Association’s umbrella. The first show ever Murchison A&P show was opened by the then Prime Minister, the Right Hon WF Massey. During the war years, the shows were not held.

Nelson Matters
Nelson and Tasman needs were ignored by the Government in last week’s $8 billion infrastructure package of 40 roading and hospital projects around New Zealand. There was nothing for our region. The congestion and road safety issues in Nelson and Richmond just keep getting worse. I am being inundated with complaints about the increasing congestion on Rocks Road, Waimea Road, Richmond’s lower Queen Street intersection and around Champion Road. Journeys that used to take 5 minutes are taking 20 minutes. Frustrated motorists are taking unnecessary risks increasing the number of accidents. Rat running to avoid the snarl ups
is affecting suburban neighbourhoods. The problems on Waimea Road will just get worse when the new traffic lights linking Princes Drive are added in June. Nelson also has the most earthquake prone hospital in NZ and our seismic risk is similar to Christchurch. The law I passed in 2016 as Building Minister requires it to be upgraded this decade. It has insufficient beds for our growing and aging population, nor are the facilities up to scratch for patients, doctors and nurses. It should have been included in the list of hospital upgrades. Labour Ministers like Grant Robertson and Phil Twyford justified
the lack of local projects by saying the funds had been allocated on the basis of population and growth. Nelson and Tasman make up 2% of New Zealand’s population and our share would equate to $160 million. Northland got $692 million worth of projects. Regions with less growth and population like Gisborne, Whangarei, Levin, Palmerston North and Wairarapa all got significant projects. I commend Tasman Mayor Tim King for pointing out that population growth in our region has been 2.1% per year, the same as Auckland’s. He and other South Island Mayors are right to cry foul. The South Island makes up 22% of New
544 Waimea Road, Nelson
Zealand’s population but is only getting 2% of the investment with minor projects in Christchurch and Queenstown. It rubs salt in the wound that this Government has also put petrol taxes and road user charges up three times for Nelson and Tasman motorists. They are taking millions more out of the region but not investing any back. They last year cancelled $6 million of work on upgrades to SH 6 in Stoke and Atawhai which would have provided quieter and safer road surfacing. We are paying more for less. National has a proven record of major transport investment locally. We built QE II Drive in the 1980s
and the Stoke Bypass in the 1990s (against opposition by Greens and Labour). We built the Mapua Bypass, Spooners Range and Gentle Annie upgrades in the 2010’s. We rightly made the $1.4 billion fix of SH1 the priority after the 2016 Kaikoura earthquake. I lobbied hard to get the $135 million commitment for the Southern Link from then PM Bill English and Transport Minister Simon Bridges in 2017. My greatest disappointment last election from Winston Peters’ decision to go with Labour, was the deferral of this project. Nelsonians are rightly angry with Labour over this neglect of our region. Just a thought... Adrienne Hill Chair, Parish Pastoral Council Our Lady of the Bays Already the first month of 2020 is in the past! Many of us approach each New Year with hopes, dreams and resolutions for the coming 12 months. With the first month gone, how are our resolutions looking? Do we even remember what they were? While our individual goals for the year may seem small in a global sense, we all have the same desires for our family and friends as those who lead and nurture countries and global organisations do - those of peace, harmony and health. In his message on the celebration of the 53rd World Day of Peace on 1 January, His Holiness Pope Francis sees Peace as a journey of Hope, through Dialogue, Reconciliation and Ecological Conversion. Hope is the virtue that inspires us. It keeps us moving forward even in the face of obstacles and trials. Peace will not be obtained unless it is hoped for.
Dialogue and listening based on memory and solidarity, Reconciliation by acknowledging one another as brothers and sisters, as well asEcological Conversion with a peaceful
relationship between communities and the land. Pope Francis acknowledges that the world does not need more empty words. What it needs is convinced witnesses, and peacemakers who are open to rejecting exclusion and manipulation. The road to peace of any kind, whether within our families, communities or globally, is long and arduous, but it is a process that requires an ongo-
ing commitment from all of us. Referring to the recent Synod on the Pan-Amazon region, Pope Francis writes, ‘Faced with the consequences of our hostility toward others, our lack of respect for our common home and our abusive exploitation of natural resources, we are in need of an ecological conversion, one that will lead us to a new way of looking at life.’ Today everything changes so quickly, nothing lasts long. And this mentality leads many who are preparing for marriage to say: “we are together as long as the love lasts,” - and then? Pope Francis said “All the best and see you later... and so ends the marriage. But what do we mean by ‘love’? Is it only a feeling, a psychophysical state? Certainly, if that is it, then we cannot build on anything solid. But if, instead, love is a relationship, then it is a reality that grows.” Let us hope that 2020 will be a year where small steps are taken, so that all may experience a life of peace.
I don’t care how famous you are, you still need a WOF! Plus - We can fix any small problem on the spot or use our handy workshop for those bigger jobs. And don’t forget you’ll be only charged the same as my mum.

th MURCHISON A&P SHOW
100
This year marks the 100th Murchison A and P Show. The first show was held in 1909. “After that, there wasn’t another show until 1915, then there were five years during the second world war that they didn’t have one,” says the Murchison A and P Show president, Allan James. “So that was 11 years in total that the show didn’t take place.” Fast-forward to 2020, on February 15th, the organising committee has planned a fabulous combination of vintage and new. “A parade will be held with tractors,

trucks, cars, and my daughter and granddaughter are part of a riding side-saddle group to lead the procession. My granddaughter is a 5th generation of the James’ family at the 100th Murchison A and P Show.” Allan says Kate Kinzett and another lady will be pulling out all their old ribbons. “Kate has probably been riding for 5 decades or more.” The pair will wear them in the parade on horseback. Following that will be the oldest car they can find because the vintage car club are coming on the day. “We’ll
have cars from the 50’s and 60’s, maybe even from the 40’s, and also the modern ‘stuff ’ so you can see what’s happened in over 100 years.” There will also be old trucks and modern ones including one of the latest logging trucks purchased just before Christmas, plus a Model

There’s been a few improve-

Allan and Jane Redwood have very kindly lent us a paddock right next door to the show to spread out into.” Going forward, with at least half the committee intent on keeping the Murchison A and P show going, its future looks bright. Their latest victory has seen them shoot to fifth place on the National Football League table. Striker Jean-Philippe Saiko’s hot run of form continued as the New Caledonian opened the scoring in spectacular fashion after half an hour. Saiko’s strike from the top of the box gave the hosts a 1-0
advantage heading into the break, and they continued to gain momentum as the game went on. Tasman struck again 15 minutes into the second as Corey Vickers laid it on a platform for Max Winterton, who made no mistake. With the result assured, Saiko inflicted further pain as he
netted a second in the 75th. Hawke’s Bay scored a consolation goal on the brink of fulltime, but it was too late. They were well and truly outclassed by the resurgent Tasman side. Next weekend sees Tasman travel across the Cook Strait to take on the second-placed Team Wellington

Jonty Dine The Crusaders put in a dominant display in their 2020 Super Rugby opener, defeating the Waratahs 43-25 in Nelson. The defending champions ran in six tries at Trafalgar Park, sending an ominous warning to the competition as they chase a fourth consecutive title. Several Mako were named in the starting line-up and the local lads put on a clinic in front of friends and family. With Richie Mo’unga receiving treat-
ment, David Havili slotted the first points of the Crusaders’ campaign. The Waratahs returned in kind before another Mako man, Will Jordan, found his way over the chalk on the back of a brilliant offload from skipper Scott Barrett, for the first try of the game. The second was sparked through slick interplay between former Nelson College players Leicester Faingaanuku and Mitch Drummond, who set Braydon Ennor sailing away under the sticks. The Mako show continued as Fain-

chase after the high ball and all I had to do was catch and pin the ears back - so full credit to the boys, it was a team effort.” The 20-year-old powerhouse says he is constantly learning from the likes of All Black wings George Bridge and Sevu Reece in the Crusaders environment. “I am finding out how and why this franchise is the best in the world and enjoying every moment. The bonus point win was the perfect start to the defending champion’s season who are looking to break its own record of three titles in a row. “It won’t come easy, it will take effort, we will take it week by week and build from there, that is the end goal, but it will take a lot of mahi.”
Bendi Kepess launched a determined finish to win last Thursday’s Port Nelson Sea Swim from Luke Kelly and Oxford Bayley. Pilot whale movement earlier in the day didn’t deter the 141 swimmers, who competed over a 450m or 1650m course. At the front of the long event tactics played a big part, with Bendi leading over the first 450m to the “dolphin” navigation marker. Wanting to capitalise on the benefits of trailing other swimmers, Bendi then gave up the lead, leaving Hayden Squance to lead to the first of two yachts moored close to Haulashore Island. On the stretch across to the Richardson St steps and back to the start point at the yacht club, the small lead bunch stuck close together, with Bendi having the edge by two seconds ahead of Luke and Oxford. Hayden was next to finish, ahead of Alex Swan and Fergus Drummond who chose to swim without the benefit of wetsuits. Abbey Smale was the first woman, leading Terry Bone, second woman Sierra Thomas and Sophie Alexander, to round out the top ten. Brooke Swan returned after a few weeks off to reclaim her dominance of the short swim, finishing 30 seconds ahead of last week’s winner Edward Swain, followed by Corey Tremblay and Olivia Huata-Findlay. Distances continue to increase as the serious part of the season arrives with many national swims coming up, including the Interislander Big Tahuna on March 7, which Nelson swimmers are expected to dominate. an opening round win for the Cantabrians. Faingaanuku says he and his fellow Nelson teammates had been champing at the bit for the side’s first visit to the city since 2015. “I think it made the other boys step up to put on a show for those of us who were bred here like myself, so I’m stoked to get the win for the crowd.” The former New Zealand schoolboy says, while there will be plenty of lessons from the night’s win, they will enjoy the moment. He was quick to deflect credit for his superb solo try. “I like to get my hands on the ball and I wasn’t getting a lot in the first half, so I whispered to Richie ‘feed me man, I’m hungry,’ so he gave me the cue to

The NSW flyer then went back to back to bring his side right back in the contest with twenty minutes remaining. However, just as they looked to be making a comeback, the Waratahs were stung with a bonus point try as Ennor nabbed his second. the infield. The super stocks were at almost full quota, but many had a change of driver after a busy few weeks on the road for the regular pilots. The sidecars ran a team’s event between Nelson, Christchurch and Blenheim with Nelson coming out the victors. Youth ministocks were keeping the referees busy with a few of the newer drivers starting to get their confidence up and challenging for podium spots. The stock cars saw the debut of the 1nz machine, with Ben Smith picking up two wins. The Tasman Thunder have named a team after initially pulling the plug for the New Zealand teams event in Stratford, a few new club members in the form of Dylan Robb and Sweeting will join John Everett, Adam Hall, Dylan Hall and Dylan Clarke in the trip north on February 29. Alicia Hill had her best finish in her sprint car on the same night, at the Hydralink War of the Wings series held in Greymouth. She finished second in the feature race on an ultra-fast track, passing cars at will throughout the night. The next meeting is racing for the Kids’ Night, supporting Child Cancer foundation with a kids’ bike race to start the programme. If you are keen to pedal around the track then head to the Nelson Speedway website or Facebook page for entry details.

Wanderers - Motueka fell 56 runs short in their Nelson premier cricket match against Waimea Toi Toi United at Brightwater on Saturday. Having won the toss, WTTU elected to bat and made good on that decision, despite losing an early wicket to a great catch by Dave Leaonard off the bowling of Hayden Ingham in the first over, by posting 50 for one in the first 10 overs. The dominance of the bat continued as WTTU reached 138 for one. Good spells of bowling from Mitch Grant and Jack White, who picked up six wickets between them, restricted WTTU to 273 all out on a day where it looked as if 300330 was not out of the realms of possibility. Ultimately it was WanderersMotueka’s poor fielding that let them down with dropped catches and poor ground fielding releasing any pressure the bowlers had worked to build. In reply, the host side looked strong at 130 for three after 30 overs with Dave Leonard making yet another 50 and a useful contribution from young gun Boe Bamford whose patient 35 anchored the middle of the innings.

However a steady stream of wickets fell, halting any chance of a grandstand finish. Max Mannering attempted to take the game deep, striking a run-a-ball 40 which included a six that landed on the roof of his own car, however, the rising run rate and the stream of wickets ultimately curtailed Wanderers-Motueka efforts as they finished their innings on 217 all out. At this juncture of the season our English pro Jack White leaves to resume his duties with Northamptonshire. A loyal club man who wears his heart on his sleeve, the experience Jack has brought to this young group is invaluable. Wanderers Sports Club is running another Quiz Night next Saturday at the Wanderers clubrooms with proceeds going towards improved facilities and equipment for all sports teams at the club. Doors will open at 6.30 with the event starting at 7pm.

A demanding race surface scorched by the summer heat did not stop Paddy North from managing a clever drive to win the Mag and Turbo Super Cup feature race at Milestone Homes Top of the South Speedway on Saturday night. Paddy won the pole shuffle and went on to win the feature race as the field slowly succumbed to the conditions. Nelson’s Ian Burson was one caught out in the early heats but benefited from a retiring field to start 16th on the grid to finish fifth as the chequered flag dropped. Shane Carey made a welcome return to racing after engine issues delayed his race season. The former three-time New Zealand champion Mark Osborne finished second with series leader Trevor Elliott in third. The street stocks were running their Club Championships on the night, as well. A few drivers suffered various issues with Steve Soper coming out on top. A run-off for second and third between KC Rose and Shannon Marr didn’t end well for either car. A dive from Rose saw both cars damaged with Marr limping home and Rose parked broken on

HAVE YOUR SAY: For details of our current consultations, head to tasman.govt.nz/feedback.
Great Taste Trail – feedback needed If you’ve ridden the Great Taste Trail lately, the Cycle Trails Trust would love to hear what you thought of it. There’s an online survey available at heartofbiking.org.nz/ feedback and your feedback can help to secure funding to keep improving this popular Trail. Plus everyone who leaves feedback goes in the draw for a monthly prize of a $50 voucher from a local business. Now’s a perfect time for checking out the Great Taste Trail, share your thoughts and you’ll be in to win.
What’s the future for Kingsland Forest? Consultation closes 6 March 2020. We’re proposing to gradually retire Kingsland Forest from commercial forestry operations as plantation forestry blocks mature and are harvested over the next 20 years. We're considering replanting in a mix of native and permanent exotic trees, allowing us to progressively improve recreational tracks and facilities over time. Have your say: We want to know what you think of the draft Kingsland Forest Development Plan. More information is available online at tasman.govt.nz/ feedback, and at Council offices and libraries.
What do you love about your local parks? Consultation closes 31 March 2020. We’re reviewing the way we manage Moutere/Waimea Ward parks and reserves, and we need your help to make sure these public spaces suit locals and visitors now and in the future. Over the next few months, we’ll be asking you to tell us which reserves you use regularly, what you love about them, and any changes you would like to see to the way they are used or managed. The most important thing we want to know is: What’s your vision for their future? Have your say: Visit tasman.govt.nz/feedback for more information.

WEDNESDAY 5 February 2020
Construction is underway to change the Gardner Valley Road and Moutere Highway intersection. We will construct a new section of road on Gardner Valley Road just north of where the intersection is now. Once the new portion of road is ready, the section of Gardner Valley Road between the cemetery and the Moutere Highway will be closed off. This will straighten out the intersection and make it safer. All work will take place in the road reserve, so there shouldn’t be any impact on road users during construction.

More experience, More papers, More choice Last month we became the largest group of newspapers here in Nelson/Tasman. The most copies printed and the most newspapers delivered to all homes in our area. By far! That means we deliver the largest base of potential customers than any other media. And we are all owned by local families. We eat sleep and drink in the same towns as you. We know what’s going on and we report it. So when you want to tell the locals something, the choice is simple. Use us. More experience, more papers, more choice. Call our market team today and let us help your business prosper.
