PREPARE FOR THE UNEXPECTED CHUCK RESNICK Moving your worldly possessions involves a lot of organization, so it’s smart to expect the unexpected. Some DIY moves go well; others end up stressful because those doing the work don’t anticipate potential glitches. For example, if you move in the winter and it’s a snowy, slushy day, how do you protect the floors from water/salt damage at both ends? What about getting large items around hard-to-maneuver corners without marking walls? What if someone gets hurt? Do
you know how to pack delicate items? What if the truck breaks down or gets into an accident halfway to your new home? Training is a great preventative measure – when you shop for a mover, find out if and how the drivers and moving people are trained. Ask whether they have a “Plan B” in case of vehicle problems, and what you can do to be prepared as possible when the packing/moving begins. Of course, there are specialty items that require an unusual level of care – pianos, pool tables, grandfather clocks, artwork, antiques and the like. The money you may save by not hiring a professional mover may end up being spent on repairs if these
large and valuable pieces are not handled correctly. Irreplaceable items may be lost forever. If you decide to move yourself, give some thought to what might happen along the way and make contingency plans. Be realistic – hiring a professional mover can offer tremendous peace of mind and is money well spent.

Saint Boniface runs north as far as Mission Street following the Red River west along Tache Avenue and later Lyndale Drive. A large area with francophone residents, Saint Boniface extends east past Archibald Street to Plessis Road, reaching the Perimeter Highway. The vibe in St. Boniface is clearly French-Canadian. From the Forks, it careens like canoe-carrying voyageurs to the next creek. Whether you’re in surgery at St. Boniface hospital or serving Sleeman’s at the Marion Hotel, you’re part of the living canvas here in the Montreal of the Metis. Former residents counted French as their first language, but now most are more diverse and Englishspeaking. How to keep the home tidy in just a few minutes a day. There are two tricks you can use to keep your home neat with little effort: SCAN AND GRAB
Any time you leave one room, scan it quickly to see if there’s anything that belongs in the room that you are going to (or along the way). Keep a basket at the bottom of the stairs and any time you come across something that belongs on the second floor, toss it in. At the
end of the day, grab the basket on your way up. Deposit the items in the rooms where they belong right away (or first thing in the morning if you’re too tired). Be sure to take the basket back downstairs on your way down the next day. The key is to get into the habit of doing this daily so the basket doesn’t get too full, otherwise it becomes too time consuming to put everything away. DO IT NOW AND SAVE TIME
Delaying tasks actually creates more work and wastes time. Fold or hang your clothes immediately after the dryer cycle is complete and you will spend less (or no) time ironing. Load the dishwasher
(or wash the dishes) as soon as you’re done eating and you’ll spend less time rinsing, scraping and scrubbing. SMART STORAGE
You’ve probably heard the term ‘a place for everything and everything in its place’. This is so true, but it’s only part of the solution. The second half of this wisdom is to keep things in a logical position. Next time you are trying to find a home for something, instead of asking ‘where should I put it’, ask ‘where would I use it’. If there is one lesson every landlord wants residents to remember is to not let strangers into the building. Don’t open the front door for people you don’t know, don’t answer the intercom or Enterphone to unlock the lobby door. Notify your superintendent when you see canvassers going door-to-door. You can never be too cautious. We recommend that residents lock their doors even when they’re inside their apartment. It’s too easy for people to just
walk right in. It is amazing how many people walk into an apartment because they got off on the wrong floor or simply because they weren’t paying attention. It can be an innocent enough mistake but it can also be awkward and embarrassing. Stop newspaper delivery when you’re going away for even a few days. Nothing says ‘noone’s home’ louder than a pile of newspapers sitting outside the door. Another thing to consider is tenants’ insurance, which generally costs about $250 per year. The landlord’s insurance doesn’t cover the contents of a unit, only the floors and walls – basically the shell of your suite.
They are not responsible for your personal effects. Many landlords make having tenants’ insurance a requirement for signing a lease, but some residents choose to ignore it. Keep in mind if you cause a flood or a fire, then you could be held responsible for all resulting damage including any to the walls and floors. What’s $250 when you’re talking about peace of mind? A person can seem charming initially, then later on turn into a nightmare. Do your homework and avoid such situations. Have a rental application form that’s appropriate for your province. It will cover all the bases. Discuss how they feel about overnight visitors, smoking, pets, sharing household chores and other mutual responsibilities. Ask
why they left their last place and how long they lived there. The application should ask for references from a current employer, a previous landlord and at least one previous roommate. By providing contact info, the prospective roommate is giving you permission to contact them. When calling an employer, state that you are verifying the potential roommate’s employment status and character, not doing an employment check. Ask previous landlords how long the person lived there, whether they paid their rent on time and why they left. Past roommates can be revealing. Ask how long they have known the person and how long they lived together. Ask what they liked and disliked
about living with them and why they went separate ways. If someone cannot provide any references or if none of their references are forthcoming, beware. You will be living with this person in close quarters and relying on them to fulfil their responsibilities. You need to have a reasonable comfort level with them. Helping friends move Jennifer Braun The year’s most popular moving dates are coming up. I want to suggest you actually consider helping a friend move. Why? Because it won’t be as bad as you think, and your fellow renter would really appreciate it. If a friend asks you to help them move, it does not mean you will be facilitating the entire move. In fact, I really do not suggest relying on friends for a complete move, but rather for a pair of helping hands. There are many ways you can help with a move, including before the move, during the move and
even after the move. Getting personal belongings organized and neatly packed into boxes is actually half the work. Moving also involves a lot of cleaning – be it the old place or the new place that still needs to be vacuumed and dusted before bringing in furniture. Then, after all that work, there’s unpacking and getting organized. So, before you say no to helping with a move, consider asking your friend what they need help with. Your strength at some point may be needed, but just being there to help pack, clean and organize can also be a big help. All that being said, helping friends move still isn’t the most enjoyable way to spend a Sunday afternoon. That’s why I say

You’ll see grape names such as Riesling, Chardonnay, Cabernet, Shiraz and Grenache, etc. In many places in Europe, wines are labelled by the place they are from. You’ll see names of places such as, Burgundy, Bordeaux, Champagne, Chianti, Barolo, Cahors, Priorat, Rioja and Sherry. There are many varieties of grapes in the world and many regions that grow them. Each grape varietal and each region has a unique flavour profile – so there is always something to discover. Getting to know your favourite grapes and varietals is crucial in better understanding which wines you’ll prefer. UNDERSTAND WINE STYLES AND HAVE AN IDEA OF WHICH STYLE YOU’RE CRAVING Do you drink according to your mood, the weather or what food you’re pairing with the wine? Your wine preferences may change based on your mood, the occasion, the time of year or what you’re preparing for the next meal. Give your style words and feelings so that you can pinpoint exactly what wine you want to try. DON’T JUDGE A WINE BY THE LABEL OR PRICE Flashy art or a higher price tag can lead you to believe you are purchasing quality wine. Be mindful this is not always the case. Read the labels (both front and back). You can even research the producer for added information as you can learn more about the product and the producer’s work. A nice wine label or bottle on sale will get you once but it might not get you again.
