Trust the experts
T
ackling smaller projects around your home is a great way to save a bit of money and create some sweat equity. This could include painting or refinishing your hardwood floors. However, it is wise to hand off the big projects to professional renovators and designers, since they require a significant amount of time and expertise. This issue’s special feature (beginning on page 31) lists all of the entrants of this year’s MHBA RenoMark Renovation of the Year Awards. Each of these 72 entries has a story to tell and all of them with a happy ending! The interesting thing about these successful projects is that all of the homeowners understood the value and importance of hiring professionals. This really cannot be emphasised enough. If you hire someone who is working ‘on the side’ and pay them in cash without a detailed written contract, there is tremendous risk that your dreams will turn into a nightmare. The great news is that embarking on a project with professionals means that your dreams will turn into a reality. Why can we say that with such certainty? Professional renovators and designers will work with you from start to finish. They provide expert advice and technical know-how. They will be able to provide a long list of satisfied customers. What about cost? You get what you pay for and if you want quality products and workmanship, professionals will supply it along with accurate pricing. They will provide you with a detailed contract which protects both you and the renovator. Also, professional renovations come with a warranty on labour. Professional renovators and designers are not fly-by-night operators. They are in it for the long term and they want nothing more than for you to be completely satisfied with their work. They want you to call them in the future with additional projects and they want you to share your experience with your friends. They are local businesses you can trust to get the job done right.

id-Century Modern style has transformed our interiors, and now we’re seeing it overhaul our front entrances, as well. The popular design aesthetic is all about clean lines, asymmetry and natural elements. Keeping these principles in mind, you can create a cool outdoor look for your home in a few easy steps.

ideas
2021
From coloured cabinetry and innovative storage ideas, to decorative range hoods that will surely make a statement, designer Bilha Kangethe rounds up the trends that are bound to dominate the kitchen scene
TURN UP THE TONES Even though the classic white kitchen is a favourite, homeowners are updating their cabinets with warmer shades. Wood finishes such as oak and walnut are organic choices that lend connection to the outdoors and add a natural texture to the space. While incorporating contrasting coloured cabinets can make your space pop. We are not saying goodbye to the white kitchen, we are parking it for now and inviting choices that will add strong character to the cooking area. Contrasting colours. HIDDEN AGENDA Increased storage is every homeowner’s dream. For this reason, designers make a point of taking advantage of every inch of space. How? By rethinking upper cabinet storage, adding appliance garages, incorporating integrated appliances that blend seamlessly with the cabinetry, hidden inserts and pullouts in drawers. And those who have the square footage, converting their built-in pantries to walk-in/butler pantries. Kitchen designers and cabinet makers are motivated now more than ever to create storage solutions for the homeowner to make your kitchen practical and provide efficient utilization. The most neglected yet highly utilized features in the kitchen – the sink and faucet – have moved up in the scale of importance. They are the least expensive to replace and come in a variety of finishes and styles that not only add functionality but also make a statement. Everything from hands-free faucets that make kitchen prep easier (and keep germs at bay), to innovative sinks that streamline all your kitchen tasks including meal prep and clean-up. These kitchen accessories are creating a buzz and are about to make major waves in the kitchen remodel world.
DIAL UP THE DRAMA Say hello to ornate decorative hoods taking centre stage in the kitchen. Cladded in wood trim, tile, plaster, shiplap, brass, copper sheeting – the range hood is evolving in character and has increasingly become a fave for many. Installed to extend life for your cabinetry and provide fast and efficient ventilation, this accessory is creating a major design moment in 2021.
SURFACE SUPREME Quartz continues to hold its own with its affordable price point, durability and marble-like features. Expect to see more detail, variety and sophistication that will give marble a run for its money. How to personalize your abode
Making your house
a home
I
by MARK AND BEN CULLEN n your opinion, how does a house become a home? Is it the smell of freshly baked cookies straight out of the oven? The planting of a beautiful flower garden? Maybe for you, it was bringing your child home for the first time. Either way, I’m sure we can all agree there are specific moments in life that turn a house into a home. When I was four years old, my father pointed to five pyramid cedars planted in a row across the rear of the yard. “The middle one is yours,” he said. Without any more explanation, he had given me ownership over a living thing, and it felt very special. After all, I was the middle kid of five
children. As the years passed, I never forgot that cedar tree; for me, it made my house a home. Today, when you walk up to the front door of my family home, you will always be greeted by some sort of plant according to the season – large hanging baskets dripping with fern foliage in the summer, and evergreen boughs in the winter. Ben plants window boxes with fresh herbs at his house throughout the summer, and always has a pumpkin and squash at his door come fall. Food gardening has always been the thing that makes his house a home. After you garden for a while, you learn a lot about people by observing
their choices used at the front of their house. A swing on a porch, visible from the street, says the owners are social and desire to be inclusive. A tall hedge at the street that blocks the front door’s view tells us that the owners enjoy their privacy. An unkempt hedge or yard and a lack of outdoor furniture are likely signs of, well, you know, and we hesitate to say, “indoor” people. When it comes to making a house a home, it’s not just one thing that completes the process. It’s an accumulation of honest efforts and memorable events that can warm up a place. And gardening can be at the heart of it all.

KITCHENS
of the future
S
taying home more in the last year has taught us a lot about how our home’s function – or lack thereof. As a result, designers have been busier than ever with renovation requests. Not surprisingly, there is one room we get asked to remodel most often – the kitchen. The hardest-working room in the house is also the busiest. Storage, prepping, cooking, serving and clean up all take place in one space. Constant use means it wears out faster. If upgrades are in your future, here are some of the latest ideas to think about. The modern kitchen is easy to clean with non-porous surfaces, sleek cabinetry without fussy hardware, and smart technology in all the appliances.
From smart appliances to robot’s that pour wine, designer Jane Lockhart breaks down what the future of kitchen renovation looks like
Pantries are not new, but how we are using them is. Along with storage for dry goods, we’re adding in counters and outlets to keep small appliances out of sight, but still accessible and easy to use. Kitchens have been taking on a streamlined look. Customization allows us to panel refrigerator doors to blend into the face of the cabinetry. Handles and knobs are disappearing, too. Door profiles are smaller and flat panels are also gaining popularity. A common request these days is for cosy nooks. Installing a window seat or corner nook allows you to be near the action, but away from the fray to read over recipes or curl up and watch the activity.

Home Decor & Renovations | April–May, 2021
For centuries, kitchens were a small utile space to cook meals, but now we want them to be open concept and well-lit. The future is even brighter for kitchens, because we’re adding larger windows and doors to let in as much light as possible. If it’s still not bright enough, we’re adding smart, adjustable lighting designed to keep us out of the dark and on task. One of the most exciting advancements is smart appliances. For instance, Signature Kitchen Suite has created a line of Wi-Fi-enabled appliances to be programmed through your device. High-precision ovens can be preheated remotely, and you can set a timer or get a notification when your meal has cooked, even if you’re not in the house. As we’re thinking more about safety and sanitation in the kitchen, Moen and other brands have created voiceactivated and hands-free faucets. You can even give the faucet commands through Alexa or Google. When your phone or laptop needs charging, forget about that tangle of wires splayed out on countertops – Docking Drawer has a great solution. The charging electronics are built-in to your drawer, so you don’t have to deal with the tangle. Many inventions coming to the consumer market are game changers when it comes to convenience and innovation. Samsung is creating a robot that can do basic chores, such as pick-up dishes and load the dishwasher. Bot Handy is a robot assistant that can even serve wine. But my favourite invention is Cold Snap – a Keurig-style, soft-serve
ice cream maker that is the size and style of a coffeemaker. It uses pods to churn a bowl of fresh soft-serve ice cream in 90 seconds. I can’t wait to try it!

Worth It?
IS AN INTERIOR DESIGNER
by LYNN FENWICK,
B.I.D.
photography by DUALITY PHOTOGRAPHIC
You have decided to undertake a renovation project. After hour upon hours on social media searching for ideas, you have finally determined exactly what you want, until… you come across an equally intriguing idea that rivals your other idea. Now you realize that your vision isn’t quite as 22
Home Decor & Renovations | April–May, 2021
clear as you thought it would be and all these ideas are starting to become overwhelming. What can you do to get your project back on track and ensure that you get what you really want? Here are 5 reasons why you should hire an Interior Designer
courtesy of A&S HOMES
1. DESIGNER VS. DECORATOR
The words “interior design” and “interior decorating” are often used interchangeably. However, there are several important differences between these two professions. Interior designers have spent four to seven years in university in
addition to honing their ability to think conceptually and execute projects. Interior designers have an intricate knowledge of understanding behavioral patterns so they can create functional spaces. Interior decorators typically do not require formal training but may have taken some courses; their focus is on making a space look beautiful while working within the functionality of a space. 2. THE DESIGN PROCESS
Interior designers strive to create functional and aesthetically pleasing spaces that embrace culture and will enhance your quality of life. This is achieved through creative and technical solutions that follow local and national building codes nexthome.ca 23
and encourage environmental sustainability. A typical design process includes programming, problem solving, ergonomics, space planning, custom design components, furniture selection, lighting and other decorative elements. By following a systematic approach which includes research, analysis and integration of knowledge, the interior designer develops a creative solution that satisfies your needs, wants and resources. 3. TECHNICAL KNOWLEDGE
An important part of creating functional and beautiful spaces is being able to communicate these ideas so that it can be built. An interior designer needs to know how to transform design concepts into technical drawings. This includes interior details, material specification, estimation and installation, construction systems and materials, building systems and environmental concerns. Other areas that interior designers must be familiar with include the application of laws, codes, regulations and standards. These are important factors as it protects the health, safety and welfare of the people using the space. 4. FRESH IDEAS & COMMUNICATION
Interior designers use tools like presentations, graphics, visual aids and other media to communicate their vision for a project to you. They can look at a space to identify potentials and problems and then provide creative solutions. Sometimes this means using materials in an atypical fashion. Some of the most important aspects of starting a project include listening, observing, asking questions and getting to know you so that we can understand your behavioral patterns, preferences and goals. As designers, we are skilled at helping you define a budget, develop design concepts and help you through the project to delivery
and installation. After all, the space needs to function and look great! 5. GET IT DONE RIGHT THE FIRST TIME
A designer can help you save time and money. Our knowledge and expertise can help prevent costly mistakes by identifying your needs and wants. By working with a designer, we will do the research and find what you need and help you make informed decisions that best suits your lifestyle. We also have access to a network of product resources that the general public does not have access to and
we can design custom millwork and furniture that fits your space. Interior designers have connections to a network of competent craftspeople, contractors and tradespeople that can oversee your project to ensure that is completed on time and within budget. As a designer, our mission is to have your best interest in mind, to create a space that fits your needs and lifestyle. An interior designer can make a big difference to your project. Whether it is a consultation or a project from start to finish, a designer will enrich your knowledge, stretch your imagination and give you a better outcome.

Rockwood
MID-CENTURY MODERN RENO IN
by MARGARET ANNE FEHR
Char’s home in the established Rockwood neighbourhood has been a work in progress since 2005 when she first moved in. Built in 1951, the 1000 square foot house was designed for practicality and Char was eager to put her personal stamp on her living space, having already made improvements with a fully-finished basement and updated bathrooms. But now it was time to tackle her most ambitious renovation by 26

updating the kitchen along with an eye to creating an aesthetic connection to the adjacent dining room that had originally been a bedroom with closet. A referral from a local renovator brought Char and Doreen Gauthier, President of Make it Home LTD, together and after that first meeting, Char felt comfortable knowing that her renovation plans were in good hands. The project began with an assessment of how to unify the kitchen
and dining room to create a state of flow. The centre hall provided a challenge since both walls were loadbearing. “One wall was relatively easy to remove, but the other would be next to impossible without destroying the finished basement to install additional supports,” says Doreen. The solution was to construct a divider to open up the space. “The divider is still structural, so we incorporated it into our structural
“We used painted HDF cabinets and walnut combination which is such a popular choice. We used quartz countertops and a trendy subway tile on the vertical. We added wall sconces over the window and under cabinet lighting,” Doreen adds.
scope for our engineering drawings. To achieve the aesthetic, we installed walnut slats for the load-bearing divider wall that matched the finish to the kitchen cabinets. “ This concept proved to be an elegant solution in creating openness between the two spaces and Char was pleased that” it looked intentional and was put there purposefully.” Once this major hurdle was tackled, the project picked up speed. A rethinking of the kitchen space introduced a variety of ways to gain efficiency and additional storage. The Lemans corner accessory includes trays that pull out independently for easy access. A narrow pull-out spice drawer is situated right beside the range and an adjustable cabinet over the fridge allows for pans and tray storage. Pull-outs in the pantry are also adjustable.
Char’s two dogs were also included in the plans with a dog dish pull-out in the toekick that opens with a touch latch for easy feeding.

Char’s two dogs were also included in the plans with a dog dish pull-out in the toe-kick that opens with a touch latch for easy feeding. Char especially loves the quartz countertops that are put to good use for rolling out dough for baking, her go-to pastime during lock-down. Char chose a counter depth fridge to get the built-in look and a concealed range hood to keep the lines clean. “We used painted HDF cabinets and walnut combination which is such a popular choice. We used quartz countertops and a trendy subway tile on the vertical. We added wall sconces over the window and under cabinet lighting,” Doreen adds. The dining room also gained valuable storage space as a bar/ buffet area with the repurposing of the former bedroom closet. Simple floating shelves and base cabinets

Celebrating
EXCELLENCE by LANNY MCINNES
Lanny McInnes is president of the Manitoba Home Builders’ Association
Congratulations to all entrants in the 2021 RenoMark Renovation of the Year Awards. * The winners will be announced in the next issue.
THE MANITOBA HOME BUILDERS’ ASSOCIATION is always pleased to partner with home décor and renovations magazine to feature the entrants in its annual RenoMark Renovation Awards. On the following pages, readers will be able to see pictures and descriptions of the projects that have been entered in this years’ showcase. Entries are featured in seven different categories – Additions, Kitchens, Bathrooms, Whole House, Outdoor Structures, Exteriors and Basement. As one can see from the entrants appearing in this magazine, each project is spectacular. We are featuring 72 different projects by 16 outstanding MHBA RenoMark renovators; renovators who follow the highest professional standards in Canada. These projects will undoubtedly provide you with the direction you need to better pursue your renovation or, at the very least, start you thinking about what you could be doing to upgrade your home. This issue of home décor and renovations is always very popular because readers see what has been done in other houses and then develop ideas of what could be in their home. These are real projects completed by professional renovators in homes in nearby neighbourhoods. Over the past year, we have all had to spend much more time in our homes. This has led to home owners thinking about changes they could or should make around the house. Everybody has something that they have been longing to improve in their kitchen. Bathrooms are being updated and modernized for comfort and practicality on a regular basis. Many of us love our neighbourhood and love our house, but we also need change. Colours and styles from 10 years ago just don‘t cut it today. Basements can be more functional and provide more living space. Cooking becomes more of a chore in a room that stifles creativity and innovation. An addition is like creating a whole new living space; a whole new lifestyle for your family without the hassles associated with moving. The award nominated renovation projects featured in this edition can provide a great example of what you can do to make your own home more functional and livable. If you’re considering a renovation, look to the standards and practices of a professional RenoMark renovator. The Code of Ethics and tips on what to look for when hiring a renovator can be found at the web site www.renomark.ca. The Manitoba Home Builders’ Association website is home to great tips, videos and full listing of our renovator members by visiting www.homebuilders.mb.ca and clicking the “Renovating your home?” button. Insist on the quality, professionalism and knowledge that come with a RenoMark renovator; your assurance of quality. Enjoy looking at all of the entrants in this year‘s RenoMark Renovators Awards and, of course, all of the articles featured in the magazine. Your next renovation project could be inspired by what you’ll see on the following pages.

This second floor addition was a great way to add extra space indoors, and also outside too! The clients wanted to enjoy not only the interior of the additional space, but also wanted to add an exterior second floor open deck for those warm sunny morning coffees! We created a beautiful space - both indoors and out! The exterior deck has a fabulous pergola style covering on a portion of the space, and a fantastic louvered privacy wall to allow in just enough sunlight when needed, and to block it out when not!
Objective: Increase existing living space, and provide main floor laundry. Solution: Construct a 500 square foot, 2nd story, master suite addition, and turn existing main floor bedroom, into the new laundry room. The master suite includes an oversized master bedroom, walk in closet, and luxurious ensuite. Solid hardwood floors, and painted hand rails give the space a warm, traditional feel. The ensuite bathroom incorporates heated plank style flooring, custom tiled shower, and a unique copper vessel sink to compliment the Farmhouse feel. The stunning claw foot tub is the crowning jewel, and draws the eye as you enter the space!
This client wanted a larger kitchen and living space to entertain family and friends. The addition had to incorporate the look and style of the 108 year old stone and brick house. A large 18’ wide opening was made into the brick walls to allow a large open space to the addition which features a large porcelain top island, chilled wine room, decorative wood beams and custom milled oak trims to match the existing finishes.

This 515 square foot Riverview addition includes a new open concept kitchen and dining room with a spacious mud room separated by a beautiful refurbished 1900 barn door. In the existing home the 3-piece bathroom was renovated, and a brand-new powder room was added where the previous kitchen had once been. Exterior foam was applied to all exterior walls to provide additional insulation for the harsh Winnipeg temperatures. A massive deck was built in the back yard to the outdoors with family and friends.
This Betsworth (Charleswood) home, originally built in 1960 and overlooking a large yard now has significantly more living space thanks to a home addition. The addition added an additional 600 sq of living space including a full primary bedroom suite with walk-in closet and ensuite, as well as a new entry and family room. Additionally, an attached garage and gorgeous sunroom with wood-burning stove were also added, making this a wonderful forever home. Hardwood floors throughout the main floor are accented by luxury vinyl tile in the entries, bathrooms, and sunroom.
This bungalow, originally built in 1973, had an awkward garage access which entered directly into the kitchen. A 300 sq ft addition, containing a mudroom complete with coffee bar, dedicated dog wash station, and unheated addition storage was added. As well as offering much-needed utility space this addition allowed the existing kitchen to be expanded, making this house a wonderful forever home.

This growing, young River Heights family really needed a mudroom space, then thought to themselves, it might be nice to have some home office space (foresight?), and then figured they’d cap it off with a 3rd floor play room! The playroom is nestled amongst the foliage of a white oak tree and features a beautiful, custom live edge sapele wood counter top. These clients couldn’t be happier with their new space and have a laundry area and mudroom that anybody would envy!
The clients had purchased the property over 4 years ago not only for the location but for the amazingly spacious backyard nestled against the Assiniboine River. Their goal was to have an amazing indoor/outdoor entertaining space that would be their own private oasis. The addition was only part of the plan to the full extensive backyard transformation that ended up including a custom pool, built in bbq area with pergola, outdoor fire pit and waterfall. The addition indoor space includes a custom gas fireplace, heated porcelain tile, custom bar, custom walnut cabinets, bench seating and vaulted ceilings.
This basement project involved a proficient design in a very small space! The clients wanted a place for their kids to relax and watch TV, and for the adults to have a place to entertain their friends too! A classic River Heights basement with a low ceiling and sloped floors - certainly had it’s challenges! We also created a 2 piece bathroom and a stunning laundry room. No one really loves to do laundry - but when it’s time - it’s certainly nice to do it in this new space!

This bathroom project was located in a private respite services facility. The original bathroom was not set up as an accessible space, so the client wanted to make some changes. We removed the bathtub, and installed a lowthreshold shower with a tile surround. Three grab bars were installed in the shower, along with a new toilet paper holder which doubles as a grab bar on one side of the new toilet. A drop down grab bar was installed on the other side of the toilet. A wall hung sink, new sheet vinyl flooring and new paint completed this project.
This project was in a home that was over 100 years old! This was a partial bathroom renovation, and it involved replacing a vanity, toilet, flooring, and removing a poorly built linen closet in order to expand the bathroom space. The current bathtub stayed. We installed beautiful new vinyl tile flooring, a new toilet, a custom vanity and quartz top, along with a new undermount sink and wide-spread faucet. A stunning floral tile backsplash was added behind a new mirror. A new light fixture, paint job, and sparkling bathroom accessories completed this amazing bathroom project!

The fixtures and finishes in this ensuite bathroom were original to the home, and so it was long past due for an upgrade. First to go was the large corner jacuzzi, which was replaced by a new soaker tub with floor mounted filler. Next in line were the fixtures, vanity top, and shower. Glass sliding shower doors provided the perfect unobstructed view of the new tiled shower beyond. To keep within the budget, the existing vanity remained, and was refitted with new shaker style doors. And finally, modern vinyl plank flooring replaced the old linoleum, providing the perfect finishing touch.
With no immediate need for another bedroom, we were able to knock down some walls, and go all in with this one-of-a-kind bathroom expansion & renovation! The patterned tile floors provide a unique canvas for this luxurious retreat, while the custom shower and detailed wainscoting immediately lets you know that this bathroom is something special! The stylish wall mounted faucets, and crisp white cabinets help to complete the modern design, that has a distinctly traditional feel. And finally, the large soaker tub, can’t help but to draw the eye, and provides the perfect finishing touch!

Judging by the dated finishes, this main bathroom needed an update to suite the look of the rest of our clients home. Choosing a classic white marble style tile and soaker tub became the main focus. Adding a recessed niche and maintaining clean clear lines, the black grout and fixtures were accentuated by a subtle grey tone paint and by adding recessed lights we brightened up the space. A New Bidet/Toilet combo was added as well as a fashionable mirror over a marble top open storage vanity and recessed medicine cabinet. Grouted LVT was installed to complete the look.

Gorgeous transformation of a downstairs bathroom. This bathroom went from a dark, dated look to a bright inviting area of the rec room. The new obscured glass window allowed the natural light to brighten the area. A larger, fully tiled shower with sliding glass doors gave the bathroom the modern touch the clients were looking for. The custom floating vanity, quartz countertop & under mount sink added a stylish touch. The clients were amazed at how bright & opened their new bathroom that appeared.
This ensuite was renovated to meet the client’s needs after an accident left him disabled. The existing jetted tub was replaced by a large barrier free, walk in shower. Grab bars and a foldable seat were included the shower area. A half wall topped with custom glass was exactly what the custom envisioned. The tiled walls & floor were complimented by a built in niche & accent tiles. A custom vanity complete with a stone counter top & 2 under mount sinks added to the beauty of the ensuite. Two tall boys were added on either side of the vanity.

This client wanted to update their lower level bathroom. They were looking for a more functional floorplan that still allowed for abundant storage. They wanted modern colors to match the rest of the home. We moved the toilet and created 2 built -in storage towers on either side of the shower. A roller shower door allowed easy access for a more functional floor plan. Classic white tile, with white wave accent tile provided a spacious, elegant bright shower. A custom vanity, matching fixtures in the shower and vanity, new flooring and lighting, finished off this elegant bathroom beautifully.
Log Home with Modern & Stylish Upgrades! In this renovation we removed a 36” white acrylic corner shower and created a larger customtiled 60x36” shower designed with a beautiful slate tile feature wall that provides a waterfall effect from the rainhead and handheld fixtures in a complimentary matte black finish. An old dresser was repurposed into a fully functional 60” vanity with black quartz countertop, handmade ceramic vessel sink and paired with a matte black vessel faucet. Pendent Lighting through-out the room completely brighten the once dark space and allows the beauty of the wood walls and ceiling to shine.
Bright, modern and functional was the goal for this renovation. The clients home consistent of a narrow biscuit tub which did not allow much space for showering. We replaced with a low-threshold 60x32” shower base, seamless cultured marble walls and frameless clear shower doors. The 64” countertop spanned between two walls but only housed a 30” vanity and left much unused space. This was replaced with a freestanding 60” vanity, quartz countertop and double undermount sinks. Atop is a stylish framed mirror to define the space and to highlight the tones of the wood vanity and the stylish lighting above.
Our clients dream was to have an oversized cast iron claw foot tub, but with this small home it was difficult to get anything into the space. We came up with a perfect solution to borrow some closet space and open up the bathroom enough to center a beautiful claw foot tub and make it the focal point of the bathroom. A filigree patterned flooring, all 4 with walls covered in classic subway tile and a dark accent grout made this classic look come to life. Recessed lighting and simple fixtures, mixed with elegant floating shelves bring everything together.

This bathroom definitely has some midcentury modern aesthetics blended with some modern farm house elements. The original master ensuite bath was definitely out of date and in dire need of a refresh. The natural walnut grain on the vanity and clean lines give the space a sense of warmth and sophistication. Quartz countertop material was chosen for its low maintenance and durability for the vanity counter and shower details. The geometric marble mosaic back splash and niche accent carry through the mid century modern feel. Charcoal hexagon floor tiles add some drama next to the porcelain marble shower tile.
The existing one-piece acrylic tub was cut out and replaced with a gorgeous soaker tub and subway tile surround. We incorporated a tiled shower with glass doors and a custom shampoo niche. We continued the subway tile throughout the entire bathroom as wainscoting for a stunning custom look. Porcelain hex tiles were used on the floor with grout to complement the existing trim in the home. The custom maple cabinetry, all new plumbing fixtures, new lighting and all new accessories are truly the icing on the cake in this spectacular bathroom design.

This client came to us with a vision to remodel their original 1980’s bathroom. This project started with a complete gut and the space was adjusted to accommodate a free-standing tub. A quality acrylic shower was installed as an economical solution and we incorporated purposeful custom cabinetry with quartz countertops and a large linen cabinet for extra storage. This bathroom was completed with LED pot lights, luxury vinyl flooring and a heated towel bar to create a spa-like space! The homeowners were so please with the renovation that we are now in the process of remodeling their kitchen.
This renovation of an older home was very in-depth. . The space was stripped, rebuilt new walls, ceiling and floor as nothing was level or plumb. We incorporated heated tile floor to create a spa like feel, ceramic 12’’ by 36’’ wainscoting and ceramic subway tile all the way to the ceiling. This bathroom features a luxurious freestanding tub with air jets, free standing tub filler, wall mounted faucet over a vessel sink, custom painted maple cabinets with beautiful quartz tops with two wall sconces surface mounted on the mirror for an extra design detail. Check out that floor tile!
Converting a space not designated for a bathroom can pose challenges but we overcame the obstacles and provided these clients the new tranquil bathroom they were hoping for. What was once a large walk-in closet was converted to a full bathroom featuring grey cabinetry with ample storage, a soaker bathtub, an open walk-in curbless shower, and the addition of a window to allow for natural light through-out the room. The light hues of the cabinetry is complemented by the marble tiles that run across the vanity backsplash through the tub area and fully tiled shower.

This modern minimalist bathroom has clean lines and soothing esthetics for a calming spa-like feel. The simple layout is enhanced by minimal textures and cohesive earth-tone palette. The stage of this showpiece is set with 12” x 24” matte finish porcelain tile on the floor and pony wall. The main event is the roomy shower enveloped from top to bottom with faux timber tile. Our client wanted to improve the aesthetic of their home and take the curb appeal to the next level. By reinforcing the existing roof structure we were able to create 2 front gables making the house have more “WOW” factor to match the well manicured landscaping in their yard. Perfectly matching the limestone facade and installing full ice and water protection with a striking red clay tile architectural shingle, made sure their home would be water tight and give them a look closer to the European villa they wanted.
This River Property project started off as a 415 square foot attached garage addition and a 205 square foot addition above the garage however as this project progresses it turned into a complete exterior refresh as well. The white stucco and painted grey wood siding was replaced with a combination of hardie board and batten siding as well as horizontal KWP engineered wood siding. The existing white garage door was replaced with a beautiful wood grain door. The final touch was replacing the stucco columns at the front entrance with this amazing custom timber frame entrance.

This project involved completely renovating the kitchen, as well as removing a wall to open up the main floor. With a large amount of oak trim work throughout the home, the clients wanted to maintain a similar colour with their new, open concept. We fabricated custom bamboo trims throughout the main floor including new capping for existing half walls and creating a stunning accent to the cathedral ceiling. The millwork in the ceiling also housed electrical for pendant lights above a beautiful new island with seating for three! Custom millwork around a new fireplace completed this stunning project!
This kitchen project involved removing a load bearing wall to open up the main floor, new flooring, and creating a new feature wall. After properly engineering the process, a structural permit was pulled with the city, the wall was removed, and an appropriate beam was put in place. The clients chose grey coloured cabinets, quartz countertops, and a unique teal accented tile backsplash and teal countertop appliances to match! A sharp looking vinyl plank flooring was installed throughout, and a new tiled feature wall with a large screen TV and fireplace were also added. Absolutely stunning!
This client really wanted a modern looking kitchen and dining room, and we certainly didn’t disappoint! New custom cabinets with stunning quartz countertops really bring this kitchen up to date! A fabulous grey tile backsplash really matched the new grey vinyl tile flooring (which was carried through to the front entrance). A seating area for 2 makes for a great place to sit for your morning coffee. Stainless steel appliances and an extra-large pantry for storage completed this amazing kitchen renovation project!
The exterior on the back of this home received a total transformation from its original white stucco and basic backyard. The clients aspirations were to transform their back yard into an indoor/outdoor entertaining oasis and it was imperative that the exterior correspond to the new look and feel. The transformation began with the addition of the 4 season sunroom at the posterior side of the home. A split modular stack stone was chosen to add some texture and dimension. Corresponding eaves fascia and soffits to the original home were chosen for continuity as well as white pvc windows.

A growing family, and a shift in how this space was being used, required that changes be made, and thinking outside of the box proved to be worthwhile exercise. Completing the design work remotely was an added challenge. The old pealing cabinets were replaced with new shaker style cabinets, and a subway tile backsplash helped to complete the modern farmhouse look. Stipple ceilings were removed, and luxury vinyl tile was the flooring of choice. Our client goals were to update the kitchen layout to something more functional for entertaining. Client also wanted to improve available storage and match the aesthetic to the rest of the house. At our first meeting we discussed opening up the space between the kitchen and adjacent dining room. We discussed what was and wasn’t working in the space. We discussed the wish list, the musthaves, and the nice-to-haves. We discussed moving the fridge, stove and dishwasher. Our client’s styling was evident…Mid Century modern all the way!
The homeowner wanted to turn their dated, dysfunctional kitchen into their dream kitchen. They family wanted a space for entertaining and where they could enjoy preparing meals together. We removed the wall between the dining room and kitchen to facilitate entertaining. A built-in beverage center was strategically placed by the patio doors for easy access to the outdoors. The large island was the perfect final touch for entertaining and it cleverly allowed for multiple work surfaces, allowing the family to enjoy prepping meals together for years to come. Multiple lighting options provided task, mood, and accent lighting.
The homeowner wanted to maximize the views of her back yard garden and the park in front of her home from her kitchen. Replacing her old, dated kitchen with modern cabinetry, featuring pull out drawers and easy access features for more functionality was a must. CUSTOM DESIGN BUILD GROUP
This project began as a fourfour-season addition of the original dining room of this 1977 twostorey home. During the addition proc process it became apparent that the flow and function of the kitchen and home could be dramatically enhanced. The original kitchen was not more then 4 years old, so the decision was made to repurpose as much as possible. The clients wanted a much brighter and lighter kitchen from the original. New cabinets were ordered in areas that were extended and new door fronts for existing areas. White quartz counters were added, a herringbone backsplash and Walnut details.
The kitchen was original from 1993 and was definitely in need of an update and subsequent refresh. The old kitchen was cramped and definitely did not reflect the 4000 square foot overall home. The wall between the dining area and kitchen was removed as well as a small powder room was re-situated. This allowed for a much more significant kitchen footprint and for more of an open concept feel. The two-tone cabinets give the space a little drama, while the walnut accents warm up the space. The tin ceiling anchors this space making it the heart of the home.

HAMMERDOWN HOME RENOVATIONS
Our design team worked to create a design that was modern, functional and that flowed seamlessly with the rest of their home. We removed walls and widened the entrance to create a welcoming entry into the home. A complete re-wire was performed to accommodate new LED under cabinet lighting, in-cabinet custom lighting and LED pot lights throughout. It features an island, a beautiful pantry with pull-outs with premium full extension and soft close hardware throughout. The details matter at Hammerdown with a subway backsplash, gold accents, oak floating shelves, and room divider with luxury vinyl floor in a herringbone pattern.
This was another repeat client of ours. This gorgeous design was done by our in-house designer. We removed a load bearing wall in this two-story home in order to open up the space and allow for our design to take shape. This included engineering plans, relocating duct work and a large LVL beam. This kitchen is an organizational dream with premium hardware and storage solutions throughout! This kitchen features stunning custom walnut cabinets with white uppers, gold hardware and accents, beautiful quartz countertops with a stunning waterfall edge on the island and luxury wide plank vinyl flooring throughout.
With a growing family a functional, organized kitchen is a must. The original layout of this kitchen did not meet these requirements, so it was time for a change. By re-locating a doorway, we were able to extend the kitchen and almost double the countertop space. A separate prep/microwave area was also added to provide more functional space to work. With the abundance of drawers in the lower cabinets we were able to eliminate the uppers and added floating shelves, making this kitchen more open and inviting. A hex tile floor finishes of this beautiful, functional new kitchen.

Restaurant owners and a chef are the clients for this project. So they knew exactly what they wanted and needed in their new kitchen and came to us to bring it to life. We were confined to the existing blue print of the kitchen. Custom made cabinets allowed us to utilize all spaces and maximize the space available. We turned a closet into a new coffee bar and installed a custom wood breakfast peninsula and added a beautiful new fireplace with wood storage and bench to the space. This is truly a chefs kitchen to enjoy for years to come.

This project was another repeat client of ours. We had previously renovated two bathrooms for our clients which made the 1980’s kitchen needing updating. This Kitchen design featured custom millwork, quartz countertops, an island, all new energy efficiency LED lighting throughout, modern subway tile backsplash and exquisite built-in appliances to create a chef’s dream kitchen. This refresh was then carried throughout the rest of the home with continuing the luxury vinyl plank flooring throughout the main floor, fresh paint, all new solid core doors, casings and baseboards. A great way to get a new home with a far lower investment.
This client, now a good family friend came to us with a dream. They had been imagining this renovation for years and wanted to preserve the feel of their 1950’s home while incorporating a modern kitchen update. This was accomplished by working with our in-house designer. The construction involved a complete gut of the space along with removing a load bearing wall and a complete re-wire. The maple cabinets with a stained weathered slate finish and gold accents really complete the look. The LED undercabinet lighting and pot lights create ambiance and an inviting feel in this beautiful fresh space!

This small kitchen was the most rewarding kitchen of the year! The client had been dreaming of this renovation for years and was so much fun. She new wanted blue cabinetry as that was her favorite colour. We kept a bright space with the backsplash and quartz countertops. The oak floating shelves and black cabinet handles finished the space off perfectly.
A repeat client came to us after we completed a full renovation of their bathrooms with a vision to transform their kitchen as part of a full main floor face lift. This project entailed a complete gut of the space along with stipple ceiling eliminated throughout the main floor. Stunning details in this home include beautiful walnut cabinetry, fully lit floor to ceiling display cabinet, energy efficient LED lighting throughout, quartz countertops with slab backsplash and plank flooring that is a wood to complement their existing hardwood floors. Gold handles and light fixtures finish the space off perfectly.
Our client’s goal was to open up their main floor design and completely remodel their kitchen. Our in-house designer worked closely with the client to bring their vision to life. We removed the dining room partition wall to open up the space and create a functional open concept layout. The entire ceiling was drywalled to remove the stipple and a complete rewire of the kitchen was performed in order to accommodate new LED pot lights and under cabinet lighting. The stunning kitchen features stained maple cabinets, granite countertops with waterfall detail on the island and a striking solid granite backsplash.
This project was an incredible transformation. The existing covered deck was “well loved” but was falling apart! The clients really enjoy spending time outside in the summer, but want to avoid pesky bugs and mosquitos - so a new, screened in deck was desperately needed! The photos speak for themselves, as we transformed an old, dilapidated structure into a new, inviting space! A composite material was used as the base, and a beautiful pergola with polycarbonate roofing panels was built above. We added a screen around the perimeter to enjoy the outdoors without the worry of mosquitos. Simply stunning!

This client was looking to spend more time outdoors. As the original owners of the home, when the house was first built, they opted not to have a deck included. With more time being spent working at home, the decision was made to build a two tiered deck to spend more time outside! We added a few special touches, like an extended lower step to display a planter, and a locked storage area underneath for seasonal furniture as well as a lawnmower. There is no better way to enjoy our summers than a BBQ out on the deck!
Our summers are short, and our mosquitoes are abundant, and so our objective was to create a space that would address both of these issues. The solution was a stunning, 3 season sunroom! On the inside, the warm traditional feel of pine, the subtle ambience created by indirect lighting, and the energy efficiency of triple pane windows and skylights, all helped to create a space that truly stands out from the pack. And the heated ceramic floor ensures that even on those crisp autumn days, this room is still the perfect cozy spot to curl up with a good book.
Our client wanted to take advantage of large rear yard space backing onto the adjacent golf course. The wish list included an outdoor kitchen, outdoor fireplace, a large maintenance free deck, and a large-scale pergola that would allow unobstructed views outward from home. Another aspect of the project was protection from stray golf balls that would often make their way onto the property. The final design had the large 10ft high pergola flanked on both sides by the outdoor kitchen and outdoor fireplace.

This 3-season river view retreat adds beautiful, comfortable living space for homeowners to enjoy warm Manitoba weather while the lazy Red River flows by. Natural wood materials were selected to integrate inside with the outside and include: Cedar clad main beam, T&G cedar ceiling, Floating fir wood shelves inside and out, Fir casings around windows, 1/2” fir clad posts. A floor-to-ceiling 4-track weather wall window system was installed on all river-facing windows. Each of the four panels slide up and down independently to allow for as much airflow as desired. Added touches include: Metal Juilette balcony railing, dual ceiling fans.
Our objective was to reconfigure the existing space, and provide a much needed update to an aging home. By removing a partition wall between the foyer and dining room, and closing off a secondary kitchen doorway, we were able to improve traffic flow, and increase the amount of cabinet storage in the kitchen. The new kitchen boasts custom shaker cabinets, stunning quartz counter tops, tile backsplash, and stainless steel appliances. Additional upgrades include a fully remodelled bath complete with jetted soaker tub, new solid wood interior doors, custom built in closet organizer, and refinished hardwood flooring throughout.
Our clients wanted their childhood family home renovated to meet the needs of their growing family. They wanted to update the home while creating an open, spacious layout with a separate master suite and private bath, and main floor laundry. We removed the support wall and wrapped the structural beam in barn wood, to facilitate a rustic style. A new kitchen, 3 bathrooms, and convenient laundry created a functional and stylish design. New paint and flooring were added throughout. Plumbing and electrical upgrades were necessary, and will ensure years of enjoyment in their new space.

This Betsworth (Charleswood) home, originally built in 1960 and overlooking a large yard was fully renovated, including adding a substantial amount of living space. The renovation of the existing home included three bedrooms, a formal dining room and living room, and a chef-worthy kitchen with stone countertops and an oversized gas range. An addition added an attached garage, sunroom (with woodburning stove), mudroom, family room, and a primary bedroom suite with walk-in closet and ensuite. Hardwood floors throughout the main floor are accented by luxury vinyl tile in the entries, bathrooms, and sunroom.
This bungalow, built in 1973, was fully renovated and now boasts an enlarged kitchen with stone countertops and an island with built-in seating. The primary bedroom’s ensuite was renovated, and the entire main floor was refreshed. A mudroom addition, including a dog was station, was added which joins the attached garage to the home. The basement was developed and includes two bedrooms, one bathroom, wet bar, gas fireplace, seating area, and a home gym. This home had significant structural issues related to a prior renovation (by a prior owner) which were discovered during planning and were corrected during construction.
This original 1950’s Riverview home was given new life and fully customized with an emphasis on space for entertaining and with a growing family in mind. The main floor boasts a new kitchen with stone countertops, new bathroom, and new hardwood floors throughout - complete with in-floor radiant heating. The basement was fully developed, including a wet bar and bedroom. On the second floor, attic space was repurposed to add an ensuite, complete with steam shower, to the already spacious primary bedroom, and existing hardwood floors were refinished throughout.

What a transformation for this cute house nestled in Fort Garry. The client had a few clear goals for the reno: create a clean, comfortable basement living area for his extended visits back home, open things up on the main floor, give the space an overall refresh, and ultimately, to implement some aging in place features. We created an accessible bathroom, widened traffic paths, drastically increased lighting and gave them a laundry room on the main floor. With a strong focus on air quality, we took a number of steps to make this a healthy, efficient new space.
This custom built 4000 square foot home from 1993 was well in need of a complete update and overhaul in several areas. Purchased by a young growing family the goal was to renovate every inch and turn it into their forever home. The configuration for both the main and upper floors were redesigned to maximize the usage and flow. One of the most notable changes was the removal of the second level structural floor and having it reengineered to allow for a more open concept living space and a kitchen that is the true heart of this home.
This turn-of-the-century home saw the largest transformations in the kitchen, living, and loft areas and included; richly stained wood shaker cabinets in the kitchen topped with granite counters. New LVP carried through to the new living area enlarged by removing a load-bearing wall to combine it with the sitting room. The loft was reconfigured from a two-bedroom to a large master & ensuite. The staircase has a removable railing to make it easier to move furniture. The ensuite has a beautiful freestanding tub, a customconfigured shower to accommodate the sloped ceiling, and a barn door with an espresso finish.

he basic premise of this column, along with providing sound advice and new ideas, has always been to try to paint a picture of reality or, ‘telling it like it is.’ If the term, ‘unprecedented times,’ has started to lose its cache, I can assure you that it has found a new home in the renovation and home building industries. What it appears we have a created, with the assistance of a pandemic, is a perfect storm that is going to be with us for a while. Here’s what’s happening... renovator’s phones are ringing off the hook with homeowners who have reevaluated their lifestyle and how they want to live in their private spaces. This may involve work from home offices or developing unused spaces to enjoy the home to a greater degree. Further, add to this what is being described as the hottest real estate market we have ever experienced. Those new buyers have their own modification wish lists, which means we should have a bonanza of activity in the residential marketplace, right? Not so fast. What do we find when we turn the coin over in this unprecedented time to see how the industry is responding? I need to tell you, not well. Through no one’s fault, the lingering result of all those months COVID-19 was keeping factory workers at home is that the industry is having a terrible time with simply getting supplies and materials. Plywood and OSB, if you can find it, is through the roof pricing and the old stack of 2x4’s you have out behind the shed is now worth more than gold. We are being notified that plumbing supplies and fixtures could take up to 18 weeks for delivery. Anything made with glues and resins like shower bases, tubs, etc. are simply becoming unavailable. These same glues and resins are what’s needed for
Home Decor & Renovations | April–May, 2021
making plywood and OSB, adding to manufacturer’s inability to keep up with the demand. So, it’s not just a matter of dealing with price increases. We simply are unable to source as much material as the marketplace is demanding right now. On top of that, the Manitoba Hydro strike is suspending all activities like call before you dig or gas inspections, which can both shut down the progress of a project. If you’re in the middle of a project right now and your contractor is having issues with their schedule, please be patient, as I’m sure they are doing the best they can. I just hope you hired a reputable good standing MHBA contractor who likely has forged long term relationships with suppliers. This is important because without it you are pretty much blowing in the wind. I’m not sure how long this will last. It’s akin to waiting to see when the next vaccine shipment is coming. The good news is that Manitoba enjoys and benefits from having some of the best renovators and builders in the country, so rest assured whatever can be done… is being done. Stay well. Wayne Sage is the owner and President of Harwood Design Builders, a multi-National and Provincial award-winning Winnipeg Design - Build contracting firm, winning 18 top five placements for best renovations in Canada, including a Best in Canada win.

by SARA DUCK Mainstream furniture design has taken an exciting turn lately. Maybe you have noticed it, too. From sculptural lighting and Brutalist-inspired tables to Rothkoinspired designs, decor is getting artsy. More specifically, Museum of Modern Art worthy! And I must admit I am a huge fan. I think we can all agree that it’s not just about furniture’s function; we want the form to be equally appealing. With art galleries and museums closed, for now, our need to physically connect with art has really changed. Along with adorning our space with literal paintings and pictures, it’s interesting to see that furniture can play a pivotal role, too – the rooms in our homes can become mini art exhibits. We can be the curator of our own spaces, choosing unique furniture and decor pieces that reflect our style and needs, and bring us unending inspiration every time we enter the room.
