THE WEDDING OF YOUR

YOUR DREAMS

Getting married is the start of a big adventure for you and your partner and it should be savoured and remembered, but pulling off the perfect wedding is no small task so with our help and our top tips and ideas within the features of this magazine, you should be able to bring together the perfect day to celebrate your marriage.

With the right combination of simplicity and individuality, you can create a wedding to remember that will never be dated or out of fashion. Weddings nowadays tend to be a showcase of personality rather than fashionable and classic with injected style from the bride and groom to ensure that it is personal and suited to you. More and more couples are now choosing to inject their own tastes into their wedding day, creating a unique experience for them as a couple embarking on one of the biggest adventures of their lives and for their guests.

It’s a good idea to buy a wedding book or a wedding planning journal, it will be your best friend throughout the planning process and will help you to stay organised with checklists and budget planners. It will allow you to keep everything in order whilst you are making all of the important decisions. You can add photos of styles and hairstyles that you like for inspirations and ideas for your own big day.

More than half of married couples go over budget when planning and paying for their wedding. Create a budget and a checklist to ensure that you stay within your chosen price margin. It can be easy to stress the smaller details such as what the weather will be like or if there will be enough food and wine for all of your guests. There are some things that are simply out of your control, so ensuring that every other detail is perfect will mean that those little things will not bother you as much.

Planning your wedding should be a fun and exciting time, so when sorting through colour schemes, hairstyles, venues and who to invite, remember that it’s ultimately all about you as a couple and your future together. It shouldn’t be a stressful time, you

should allow your family and friends to help, that is why they are there after all.

Weddings in recent years have featured all kinds of events to celebrate a marriage. Engaged couples look for something fun and memorable with experiences such as caricaturists and magicians along with theatrical performances from fire breathers, dancers and circus performers that will add some drama to your entertainment.

They also look for something a little different with banquets and feasts that separate from the classic and traditional wedding breakfast. Wedding venues, bridal designers, hairstylists and make-up artists cater for every type of bridal style so you will always be able to find exactly what you’re looking for to meet your own unique personality.

INTRODUCTION

MARRIED?

There is a wide range of venues offer but they may not be exactly what you’re looking for.

VENUES

You can opt to use an Independent Celebrant which means that you can celebrate your marriage on a secluded beach or in that beautiful wildflower meadow. You must register your marriage and complete the legalities at your local Registry Office and then the rest is up to you. You are not limited by venue, ceremony or style. You are free to create your bespoke wedding and make it as unique as you want. In these circumstances, couples can ensure that their wedding is where, when and how they dreamed it would be.

The venue that you choose plays a big part in your wedding day and will affect many of the other details that will make your big day. It will depend on location, amount of guests and of course your budget. As a basic guide to booking and paying for the venue of your choice, it should be no more than half of your overall budget. Estimate the number of people that you would be inviting to your wedding as most places have a minimum party size meaning that you may need a substantial amount of people to attend. For example, if you are hoping for a small and private wedding then a stately home or a castle is probably not the most realistic idea to go for.

The best way to choose the perfect venue is to roughly decide your number of guests and your budget and then choose a few favourite places between you. Shortlisting three or four venues that fit your style and write a list of pros and cons for each, not forgetting the travel for guests and the photographer.

Whether you are going for country and rustic then why not take a look at a local barn venue or talk to a company that hire out marquees for the grounds of a country house. When you are intending to get married in a church, you always have to remember that your guests will have to transfer to the wedding reception venue, why not hire a coach or arrange beforehand how the guests will travel from venue to venue.

Most venues tend to host fayres or open days to allow you to visit and look around, helping you to visualise your big day and hopefully set your mind on what you really want. When budgeting for a venue, it’s important to keep in mind that you may need to set aside a little extra for things you may want on the day. Ask your venue to give you a list or a breakdown of what is included in the price in order for you to see exactly what you will get for your money. Overspending can be worth it, especially when you are getting the wedding day of your dreams. It should be the best day of you and your partner’s life so getting it just right is worth a little extra spending.

An all-inclusive hotel or ballroom is the perfect backdrop for a classic fairy tale wedding. A traditional and big wedding benefits from a country house or estate or even a castle as the venue. These old places have bags of character and will ensure that the ornate details that you crave are included in your day. Always look for somewhere with plenty of landscapes such as a golf club or spa with sweeping views, where there are opportunities for stunning photographs to capture your wedding day.

The Beonna is a grade I listed building. A former church, built in the 1200s, with its high ceilings, stone pillars, curved stone arches, and many windows that let the outside light in, bring a sense of grandeur and splendour. The modern renovations give a warm, spacious feel, enhanced by the atmospheric lighting and original features.

The large wooden doors and other original features make a great backdrop for wedding photos. Our untouched chancel with its stainedglass windows, original pews and stunning intricate wooden rood screen creates a timeless feature as backdrop to your wedding, marrying old with new. Add in a sprinkling of personal touches and flexibility to stage the day just as you want it makes the perfect wedding day tailored for you.

Our Venue has the capacity to seat up to 90-100 for a seated wedding breakfast, extended to 150 guests for an evening reception. Whilst we are not licensed for civil ceremonies, we can host blessings with the vicar, celebrant or have a ceremony completely of your own making. Our flexible venue means you can personalise your day, with our wedding planner to help make the day perfect for you.

CHURCH WEDDING

CHERISH

If you choose to get married in a church, it will surely be a day that is personal and special for you, but that does not mean that you have to spend a fortune.

Part of the cost for your church wedding will be for the legal fees as well as the optional extras which you can choose or decline, according to your budget. The basic legal fee includes the cost of the vicar, the church, readings, certificates, lighting and all administration. This has ancient origins and ensures that your church can maintain weddings and other essential services.

Some additional extras may include choirs, organists, bell-ringers, church flowers and extra copies of the marriage certificate. Churches can offer so much more than simply a venue for your wedding ceremony, so whether you are familiar with church or whether it is new to you, there will always be a personal and unique feel to your marriage ceremony.

You have choices in how your wedding ceremony shapes up, making it uniquely yours. You can make choices for the ceremony, such as which hymns you’d like, what music you’d like to have playing as you walk in and leave the church, bible readings, special poems and any special requests for the ‘giving away’ part of the service.

Many couples who have had a civil marriage, decide that they would like to dedicate their marriage in church. Therefore you can have a church blessing, whether you got married in the UK or abroad. It can be a way of ensuring that your family and friends can celebrate your marriage if they were unable to travel with you, with a simple service acknowledging the commitment already made between husband and wife during a civil ceremony. It can be designed to have a similar feel to a wedding with hymns, readings, flowers and even bells if you wish.

The vows that you make are the heart of your wedding day and have been spoken by millions of couples over the centuries. They are unique to church weddings and cannot be re-written or changed in any way for legal reasons – they are the words of commitment to a shared life that define you as ‘married’. The marriage vows are spoken in church before your family and friends along with ‘Declarations’, which confirm that you will always love and care for each other. These promises are represented when you give the rings to each other, as a symbol of unending love.

AS YOU

WISH

Every couple wants their ceremony to be unique and special to them and their families, so this type of wedding offers flexibility and can provide a memorable and bespoke marriage ceremony.

Acivil ceremony is a marriage service that contains no religious elements or connotations. This allows for plenty of freedom when you choose to get married, particularly when it comes to choosing the location of the ceremony. When it comes to the ceremony itself, it must be of a non-religious nature and take much less time than a church service would. Choosing a less popular venue can make your day memorable and remarkable for everyone including you and your partner.

One of the advantages of holding a civil ceremony is that you can choose from thousands of approved buildings in the UK such as castles, county estates, sports clubs, museums, aquariums and so many more. They essentially offer the same ceremony as in a registry office, but allow for a more unique and interesting atmosphere and backdrop for your marriage.

Of course, there is always a simple registry office, but some offices can feel functional and plain and the surroundings can make it feel less special than other options. There are also formalities that have to be kept, as with any legal

binding contract. You must give Notice of Intention to Marry or the Notice of Civil Partnership to the Registry Office and then the service must be carried out within one year to allow time for any objections to the marriage or partnership on legal grounds to be stated.

One of the attractions of civil wedding ceremonies for couples is that they can create a totally unique service to suit their individualities. Customisation of the venue and the ceremony is a key advantage and the readings and music at these ceremonies can be completely personal. The vows that you choose, if you choose to say any at all, can be personal and individual allowing you to compose real and meaningful words for your partner at the ceremony. You should not include anything that is religious, such as hymns or bible readings.

The most serious and romantic part of the day is of course, the vows and promises that you make to love, cherish and honour your new spouse, and these can be chosen without any restrictions. This allows you to say whatever you want to your partner, whether that is a poem, song lyrics or a simple phrase that you say to one another.

OUTDOOR WEDDINGS

THE STUNNING

OUTDOORS

Structures such as pavilions or huts are in place in many venues across the UK, in which you can carry out the ceremony. There are also places that get special licenses such as treehouses and beach huts, allowing you to achieve your dream of an outdoor wedding.

In the UK, you can only marry under a fixed structure with a roof. This could be anything from a veranda to a bandstand, but you cannot legally be married in something like a marquee, however you can have a blessing in a location of your choice and be legally married at a later date.

A good reason to have an outdoor wedding, is that is works for all numbers. Whether you want a small and intimate ceremony or a huge party, you are free to do as you wish, depending on your budget. It is also easy to personalise an outdoor space with any theme.

A yurt is more robust and stable than a marquee and offers a larger inside area which is suitable for weddings, especially in the months when the weather is uncertain. Some yurts even have interior wood-burning stoves and comfy seating areas, making them perfectly cosy for outdoor weddings when the evenings turn cooler.

An outdoor wedding gives you the opportunity to deviate from the formal meal, especially if you are holding the

ceremony in an open barn or a marquee. A buffet-style set up will work perfectly and will help to add to the relaxed feel of a rustic wedding. This could also work out cheaper on the catering side, as wedding breakfasts can be expensive depending on the type of venue you would like.

An outdoor wedding is not the best idea in the colder months of the year but you can get around this by providing blankets or having a bonfire, providing that your venue is permitted to do this. Of course, the weather could be a problem, so you could provide umbrellas or sunglasses if you are planning an evening ceremony when the sun is setting. This will make sure that your guests don’t miss anything due to squinting.

It is important to inform your guests that most of your wedding ceremony will be outdoors, as it allows them to dress appropriately and be prepared for all weathers. Make sure that your invitation is descriptive so that it is obvious that you have an outdoor theme and advise your friends and family that jackets, wraps and umbrellas may be necessary.

WEDDING THE HIGHLIGHT OF THE

Whatever style you pick should be reflected in the wedding reception as well as revolving around your preferences and personality.

Your wedding reception sets the mood for how you want to celebrate your wedding whether that is romantic and intimate with your closest family or loud fun and partying with your friends. For many of your guests, the reception will be the highlight of the entire wedding day. Expectations will be high and it will be anticipated that you will pull off an amazing party that will have people talking for years.

It is especially important to greet all of your guests individually and thank them personally for being a part of your day, but once the festivities are underway do your best to spend time with people or join them on the dance floor.

Whether your meal is a formal affair or a casual buffet,

you must include a well thought out seating chart for your guests. Grouping friends and family together based on similar connections and interests is a good idea as they will have something to talk about if they haven’t met before and ensures that they will enjoy their evening.

For happier guests and an easy time for you, it’s always a good idea to consider having an open bar. There are ways to make it work if you have a budget, for example serve one brand of beer, ale or house wine and add a couple of cocktail options for those who prefer something on the fruity side or simply provide one free drink such as prosecco or cava when the reception begins. Give your guests the option to pay for drinks if they require something different such as spirits or more expensive wine.

WEDDINGS ABROAD

WORTH IT!

There are pros and cons to getting married abroad. It’s not just about hopping on a flight and saying ‘I do’ on a beach, but it can be worth it.

As well as the time of year, monsoon season, local customs and food, there are lots of things to consider when getting married abroad. Planning is key and you may have to book the wedding around 18 months before the event to ensure everything gets planned and people know about it beforehand.

You have to think about accessibility for family and friends. Direct flights that are regular and affordable with a short travel time from the airport will give them more incentive to accept the invitation.

You would also need to check the details of your marriage ceremony under local law. Each country has different rules when it comes to marriage. In many places, it can be difficult to have a legal ceremony unless you are resident for a number of weeks or months. In this case, the norm would be to have a legal ceremony at home and a symbolic blessing on the day.

A local wedding planner who knows the area will be invaluable. From sourcing key suppliers, liaising with vendors in the region and explaining your requirements in the local language, the help will be essential. Choose an established, English-speaking planner who has experience working on weddings in your region and of the style you want to create. This does not mean that you shouldn’t visit the venue, florist and bakery yourself. You need to ensure that it’s what you want for your big day.

DRESS THE DREAM

Choosing your wedding dress will be one of the most important decisions that you will ever make and it has to leave you feeling beautiful without breaking the bank.

There are a lot of dresses to choose from and there is a lot riding on your choice with regards to budget, style of the bridesmaids and overall theme of the wedding. There is a simple five step method to help you find your dream dress.

Know your shape

It is easy to fall in love with a dress that you see online or in a shop window but if you have nothing already in that style or shape, then the chances are that it is not the right dress for you. Using your existing outfits as a starting point can help to define what shapes already look good on you, make you feel comfortable and flatter your figure. If you love a peplum skirt, focus on fitted and flared dresses. If you are more suited to a relaxed shift dress, try an A-line or sheath dress as a more natural choice.

Keep to your style

If you are a boho girl at heart, then a princess dress is not going to be suited to you on your wedding day. Going for your own personal style is a must when choosing your bridal gown, as well as matching the style of the venue and ceremony. Church ceremonies often require a little more coverage, often including sleeves, whilst brides who require a less traditional look without straps would be more suited to city or beach locations.

Open your options

Visiting bridal boutiques is essential with the whole experience being a whirlwind of emotions, especially if you are accompanied by friends and family. The moment when you find ‘the dress’ will be a moment to remember and the experts in the store will be able to help you decide what works for you. It helps if you know what boutiques stock designers that you like and going into the boutiques with a general idea of what style and material you would like, that is going to make the process less stressful and more exciting.

Stick to your budget

Wedding dresses are often the most expensive item of clothing you will ever buy, however, the price ranges are very different for every style and designer. Letting the store or boutique employees know your budget to start with is a good idea as they will be able to help you find what you are looking for, within reasonable margins of your budget. It ensures that you will not fall in love with a dress that you cannot afford. You also have to factor in the cost of alterations and each store usually has an in-house seamstress which will mean that the price is not as steep as going to a private seamstress.

Trust your judgment

When you have found the right dress, you will know. Whether your bridesmaids, mum, grandmother has a different opinion doesn’t matter, if you make the decision based on what others think then you will never be happy with it. Take your time when deciding and don’t rush your decision with pressure from loved ones. If the dress feels right, you have found the one.

IMPRESS DRESS TO C

hoosing what to wear for your wedding day can be a challenge. Looking your best at your wedding should flatter your height and physique. There is always the perfect one out there for you, whatever size or shape you may be.

The Pear or Triangle: Small bust and full hips. A portrait neckline with larger sleeves helps to broaden your upper body. It is best to look for a dress that doesn’t attract attention to your lower half such as a mermaid dress or one made with clingy materials. Avoid dresses with an inward cut neckline such as halters and steer clear of full skirts or skirts with heavy folds, ruffles and bustles.

The Rectangle: Hips and bust in proportion with a defined waistline.

Princess style dresses will give the illusion of curves along with an empire waistline that will draw the eye toward the detail on your bodice. Bateau and off-theshoulder necklines provide horizontal lines to break up your vertical figure. Avoid darted bustlines and dresses that cling to your silhouette.

Full Figured: Full hips, bust and waistline. A fuller skirt such as A-line dresses will mask your lower body and angled lines will minimize your figure, creating the illusion of smaller hips and thighs. Look

Round (Apple)

for a dress with a dropped V-waist and a V-neckline and avoid dresses that are too form fitting or have too much detail such as beading, especially rounded beads.

Inverted Triangle: Full bust and small hips. Avoid low-cut dresses, high waistlines, slim skirts or bodices with detailing as they would emphasize your bust. Minimize shoulder width by having a simple bodice, natural shoulder lines and small sleeve details. A dropped waist such as a basque can strengthen your upper half with a fuller skirt with pleats, lace or beading.

Petite: Short in height in proportion with a small bust, hips and waistline. Vertical lines will make you look taller with dresses such as mermaid or sheath styles. High necklines will lengthen your torso along with asymmetrical and basque waistlines with A-line dresses or an Empire waist. Large skirt dresses and too much detail will add width instead of height and cause you to appear overwhelmed by the large amounts of material.

Hourglass: Full bust and hips with small waistline. Avoid high or low necklines and steer clear of too much detail. Highlight your curves by wearing a mermaid or sheath style dress. Downplay your lines by wearing a classy and simple dress. Off-the-shoulder or sleeveless, princess or A-line scoop or V-neck, they all look good.

BEAUTY

Your complexion and clear skin is essential for looking your best on the big day and will make all the difference when you look back on your wedding photographs.

Dark circles and dry skin is common in brides-tobe due to the build-up of stress from planning and decision making, these can be combated with an eye roll on or a colour corrector.

Moisturiser is a must have when preparing your skin as all of those late nights deciding on seating charts and menu choices will take their toll. Getting a good night’s sleep during the weeks leading up to the wedding will help to rejuvenate and renew your skin. Deep cleansing of the skin will help to eliminate oils, dirt and product build up to freshen you up.

Make sure that you get your eyebrows waxed and shaped at least a week before the wedding and tweeze any stray hairs the day before to avoid redness. It’s also a good idea to book an appointment for a soothing and hydrating facial and a manicure/pedicure to ensure that your nails look good for the big day. When you see that all important photograph of the rings on you and your partners fingers, you don’t want to see chipped or short nails.

When it comes to planning what make up style you will go for on your wedding day, remember that you should still look like you and not allow yourself to go too over the top. You should look like the best version of yourself whilst feeling confident and beautiful. Choose a non-SPF based foundation to avoid flashback in pictures and if you are going for false eyelashes, try and choose natural ones without too much depth or length to them.

TRESSES

The side bun

Dress it up with a big flower in the side. This style suits all face shapes. Either super neat or big and loose, a side bun is a gorgeous style for any bride wanting an up-do. A younger and softer look than a high bun, this is effortlessly pretty. For a stunning twist, add small pearls or beads into the bun.

The blow dry

Fantastic and versatile this will suit any length and any type! A gorgeous hair accessory is all there is to add. A simple blow dry, whether finished straight or curly can be just as lovely as a more complicated wedding style. A bouncy blow dry is both neat and sassy on shorter hair, and comes to life with a fancy clip hair accessory or flower in the side.

Half up half down

Great with curly or wavy medium to long hair or brides wearing veils. Best with hair styled curly or wavy, get your stylist to pin back a section of your hair and leave the rest down. Play around with the twisted section by including braids or a small bun. This is definitely the best option if you have a veil.

The ponytail

Really lovely with long, thick hair. An unusual wedding style, but done right, it can look show stopping! This is definitely best worn curly, and looks best as a mid or side pony. Add glamour by creating a bouffant look at the roots and a crystal hair accessory or flower to cover the tie.

BE BEAUTIFUL

It’s important for your lingerie to merge seamlessly with the fabric and style of your dress.

There’s the obvious garter and choosing from bras and bustiers, to shapewear and stockings, it can be difficult to know what you are looking for. There is a lot more to your bridal lingerie than something frilly and expensive.

for smoothing out those little lumps and bumps to give you the curves that you want for your wedding day.

You need to remember that being comfortable in your wedding underwear is just as important as the way it looks. Some brides opt to have fitted corsets, basques or even a bra sewn into the dress to prevent any uncomfortable mishaps on the day. You don’t want to be pulling your dress up throughout the day.

It goes without saying that your dress will determine which bridal lingerie you go for so, it is essential to wear your chosen bra for your dress fittings so that you get the perfect fit, and buying this in advance will save you a lot of stress further down the line. When you are trying on different wedding gowns, it’s a good idea to take a choice of bras including strapless ones to ensure that you know what type of lingerie you will need when you find ‘the dress’.

Lingerie will play a bigger role in your big day than you might imagine. You shouldn’t be able to see any panty lines through your dress and there definitely shouldn’t be any bra straps showing. If you need a little help with confidence, there are plenty of shapewear style knickers

A strapless dress will go perfectly with a push up bra or a low line corset, whereas a dress with a plunging neckline might work better with a multi way bra that can be adjusted to make the most of your assets. It can really be worth the effort to track down your local specialist lingerie shop to have a proper fitting as many women don’t wear the right sized bra. Some brides decide not to wear a bra at all and you can always treat yourself to a gorgeous pair of stockings or underwear. If you are not comfortable without a bra, why not go for a backless corset or basque.

CHIC

As Mother of the Bride, you are one of the most important people in the wedding party, and with all that attention on you, no doubt you want to look fabulous! Here is our style guide on what to wear and how to look amazing.

The first thing to think about is what colour to wear. It goes without saying don’t wear white or cream but bear in mind the bridesmaids dress colours without matching them , and of course the mother of the groom. You may need to keep updated here, surreptitiously or not, depending on your relationship with her. If bright colours don’t suit your skin tone, opt for more subtle neutral tones and select your accessories to add a pop of colour. If you find yourself struggling for the right colour, just pick the right dress and use accessories as a nod to the rest of the wedding party.

It may sound very cliché but confidence comes with comfort, and that means if your dress is tight, it pinches or is not quite right don’t buy it. The same goes for shoes, which you will have on the best part of the whole day, so don’t choose killer heels, unless you also have a pair for the evening do. No one looks elegant in stocking feet.

Many mothers of the bride want to wear a glamorous hat. A wide brimmed one fits the bill but be careful it is in proportion to your height, as too big a brim on a small frame will make you look like a mushroom. Fascinators are

still popular, but there is an increasing trend not to have either, opting instead for elaborate statement jewellery, or a fabulous corsage at the waist. A chic wrap or matching jacket is essential in case of chills.

Finally many mother of the bride dresses are limited editions, so don’t wait too long if you find the perfect dress, as it may sell out, whilst you are making up your mind.

STYLE ME

PRETTY

A little bit of glitz and glamour can make all of the difference to a bride. Adding a bit of sparkle with jewellery and hair accessories can alter the entire look. A shining hair comb, sparkling tiara or glittering hair pins can change a simple hairstyle into a dainty and dramatic up do in seconds.

Although it is a special day, don’t stray too far from your natural and normal style. If you rarely wear jewels, then there is no need to drown yourself in diamonds on your wedding day. The goal is to look like the best and most beautiful version of yourself.

Match your Metals

Some metals look better with certain dress colours. As a general rule, ivory is best paired with gold since it highlights the creamy tint of the fabric. For a pure white dress, choose accents in silver or platinum or with pearl detailing - gold may clash with brighter white hues. If the dress you choose is already embellished with beadwork, let that dictate the colours of your accessories. For example, if your gown has silver beading, pick a necklace, bracelet or earrings with a silver base.

Less is More

Accessories add a unique touch to your look, but even one too many can be over the top with an alreadyembellished gown. Taking an inventory of your gowns stand out features will allow you to choose something, so if your dress has an ornate neckline, opt for a pair of drop earrings instead of a necklace or a fascinator. Earrings can depend on your hairstyle so if you are leaving your hair down and over your ears, small studs or drops will do. However, an updo may mean that you want something a little more dramatic and dropped.

KEEPING YOUR MAIDS

SWEET

When it comes to choosing the bridesmaid dresses, it can often be just as difficult as choosing the bridal gown, especially if you have quite a few bridesmaids. It’s important that all of your bridesmaids feel comfortable and pretty on the day in order to be there when you need them.

If you have agreed that your bridesmaids will buy their own dress, or even if you are buying them all, presenting them with options will keep them all happy, and avoid any resentment. This can be tricky but you can give them their own choice on dress style, and hairstyle, but define what colour you want most, or vice versa. If you want mismatched bridesmaids, even better! They can form their own look. The style of dress will have a big impact on your wedding theme. For instance mix and match floral short styles, or sorbet shades for a country wedding, or floaty style maxis in neutral shades for instant boho prettiness. Create drama with identical colour pop gowns for full on wow, or gowns with vintage style sleeves to bring out timeless elegance.

Before you get carried away do consider your girls’ finances before you start, especially if you have

asked them to buy their own dress. They will feel honoured that you’ve asked them to be part of your special day, but it shouldn’t cost them an arm and a leg. Your bridesmaids may not know each other very well so set a night for proper introductions. You want them to get along so having one or two nights in and out should help them bond. Right from the start name your bridesmaid of honour, so that the others know who to turn to if there are any problems, and you will not have to step up to sort every little detail out.

Finally spoil them with special bridesmaid gifts. Nothing will make them feel more special than a personal gift from you, the bride, and it will be a perfect keepsake from your wedding, too. Overall, be the coolest bride you can be – treat your bridesmaids well, and they will return the favour!

EIGHT HAIR, BEARD AND SKIN GROOMING TIPS FOR MEN ON THEIR WEDDING DAY

Your wedding is one of the most important days of your life, or it is to your partner at least! Either way, you have a responsibility to make sure you look your best. It’s only for a day, so make the effort. You can slide straight back into your comfy jeans and hide under your favourite cap soon.

MEN’S GROOMING thirty-eight

Getting prepped doesn’t have to be a drag either. Below, the team from leading men’s grooming brand The Bluebeards Revenge have put together 8 simple – but effective – styling tips to get you through the big day!

1

Book yourself in for a wet shave

Head down to your local barbershop with your groomsmen for a traditional wet shave before your wedding day: the hot towels will help your complexion, while a traditional cutthroat razor promises to offer a close shave that’s very hard to achieve with cartridge razors at home. Make sure your barber uses a post-shave balm to soothe the skin and reduce redness and irritation too.

Don’t leave your haircut too late

It doesn’t matter if you’re drastically changing your style (we don’t recommend this!) or just keeping things tidy; make sure you book in to see your barber a week before your wedding. Giving yourself a solid seven days means your new haircut can settle in, making it look more natural. Go for a timeless style as well – that way your wedding photos will never look too dated and you can avoid embarrassing future conversations: “Is that a bowl cut!?”

Wash your hair properly

Men often neglect shampoo and conditioner, but they are essential grooming products for balancing the production of sebum oil, which causes greasy hair. Every man needs a bespoke regime when it comes to shampoos and conditioners, as sebum oil is produced at different speeds depending on the person. Washing your hair with each product on a daily basis should be sufficient for most. You don’t want greasy hair on your wedding day, do you?

Deal with excess hairs

No, not down there – although that might need a little manscaping as well!

Go the extra mile and ask your barber to trim your nose hair, pluck or thread your eyebrows, and sort out your sprouting ears. These grooming procedures are common practice for barbers now, so there’s no shame in asking.

Show your beard some love

If you’re a man with a beard, make sure you trim the unruly fuzz before the big day. Beards can get messy quickly, so do this right up until the big day. Use a beard oil and comb as well to soften your facial hair and leave it smelling strong.

Pay attention to your skin

Your skin is your largest organ and deserves to be pampered. Drink plenty of water in the build up to your wedding to keep your skin hydrated. It’s also worth using a face scrub to remove dirt and oil from deep inside the skin’s pores for a complexion that glows with confidence. Finish with a moisturiser to lock in all that goodness.

Clean and clip your nails

Lots of men get so caught up thinking about their suit, shoes and tie that they forget to sort the simple things. It takes no time at all to cut and clean your nails, but it’ll make all the difference.

Apply cologne properly

Whether it’s sweet or musky, make sure you wear cologne on your wedding day. Applying your favourite fragrance is an art: regulate the number of spritzes to just one or two and dip your finger into the cologne to evenly distribute the scent. Consider the wrists, neck and chest as grooming hotspots.

2 3 4 5 6 7 8 MEN’S GR OOMING thirty -nine

SUITED SHARP AND

It’s not always best to go for tradition, you should think about what will flatter you figure. Give your formal wear a punch of personality by adding some colour with a handkerchief, bow tie, tie or cufflinks to compliment the theme of the wedding.

MEN’S SUITS forty

If you are tall and slim, double breasted styles and shapes will suit you perfectly, along with high shoulders. A long jacket will flatter your tall frame and look better than a short jacket. Muscular frames should go for a well fitted jacket in the shoulders.

Shorter grooms should go for a shorter jacket to prevent them from losing height with the classic tailed or morning suit. Morning suits are the most formal option, made up of a single breasted suit with a large tail at the back. Slim fitting trousers will elongate your legs and a clean line in the suit with simple styles, sharp cuts and a thin fabric. Jackets are usually black or grey and are worn with a waistcoat, these are best for churches or formal civil ceremonies.

remember that shoulders should be fitted to the body and for formal wedding suits, some prefer a wider shoulder for comfort.

There is no rule on how much cuff to show but it’s usually around 1 cm under the jacket cuff. Cufflinks and tie pins can make a big statement and it’s becoming popular to get novelty or personalised accessories for the groomsmen to add a unique touch to the wedding gifts.

You should go for a lighter fabric during spring or summer, such as linen and don’t be put off wearing a black suit in the warm months. It is a classic look that can be brightened up with a pale shirt and tie combination. Navy blue is a timeless classic look for many grooms in recent years and is a great option for formal occasions, but it can be dressed up with black shoes or made more casual with tan brogues.

Picking a shoe that matches your wedding suit is important. Put in the effort to polishing and shining your shoes for the big day to ensure you are looking your absolute best.

Images courtesy of

Some grooms feel more comfortable in a classic everyday style suit, which can be enhanced by a matching waistcoat and cravat. The groom should stand out from the best man and ushers with a different coloured waistcoat or tie. When choosing a suit,

CAPTURING THE MOMENT, YOUR WAY

Astressed or unhappy bride and groom don’t make good photographic subjects, so you need to choose a wedding photographer who can carry out a professional shoot, leaving you to relax and enjoy your day. When budgets are tight it’s easy to look at the actual cost, and overlook the work, talent, and ability itself. Try to select a few photographers that meet your requirements visually, and then narrow them down to what fits your budget.

There are several important points to consider for your shortlist. Ask to see their weddings portfolio, and does it reflect your own style, either informal mood capturing, or a traditional straightforward record of events.

You should always meet them all informally first. You will be spending the whole day with them, sharing intimate moments so it’s vital you feel comfortable with them, and if your photographer gets to know you

well, they will be more emotionally invested in the day. A great opportunity to spend with your photographer pre-wedding is at the venue. You can show them round and point out all the things you love about the place so that they can capture it from your perspective. You may have chosen it for the fantastic backdrop it will give for the day, but the photographer will be interested in the light, as this is key element which will elevate your photos from mediocre into the stunning category.

Wedding photographers aren’t just suppliers, they’re one of the most important guests at your wedding.

SEALED AND DELIVERED

Wedding invitations are the first peek that your guests get into your wedding day, so you should make sure that it makes a good impression.

Along with listing the location and time of day, the style of the invitation hints to the formality for your wedding. You should have an idea of the type of event that you’re throwing, whether that is classic and elegant, casual and relaxed or glam and modern. You should spell everything out, including the date and time of the ceremony.

Think about your wedding colours as you may want to incorporate some hues and a motif into your invitations. You can then carry this theme on throughout the rest of your wedding papers such as table numbers, seating plans, menus and ceremony programs. Whilst ivory, cream and white paired with black or golden font is a classic choice for invitations, you can brighten them up with colourful or metallic fonts, paper, envelopes and liners.

When you are considering colours and patterns for your invitations, you cannot forget about the text. The information that you put on the invitation is the whole point of sending it out in the first place, so if your guests cannot read it then there is no point in them looking nice. Avoid light coloured inks on light backgrounds and dark in on dark backgrounds. Yellow and pastel colours are tough to read unless they are on a dark background. Do also be aware of fonts that may be harder to read, so avoid anything too fancy and enable your guests to read it properly.

Your save-the-date cards should be sent out at least half a year before the wedding. While they don’t have to match your invites, ordering everything from one stationer can save you money and make the invitation process easier on you. Start scouting stationers around a year before the wedding and aim to order your invitations about 4-5 months before so that they are ready to mail out 6 weeks before the wedding.

Order your menus, programs and thank you notes with your invitations. That way, your stationer can include all of the pieces in one order, which may save you money and time. It’s also a good way to ensure that all of your stationery has a cohesive look, even if you want to vary the design slightly for each element.
