LESS THAN A MONTH TO GO UNTIL GRIMSBY PORT OPEN DAY

With less than a month to go until this year’s Port of Grimsby Heritage Open Day on Saturday 14 September the Dock Tower will feature in an exhibition.

With the recent announcement about Associated British Ports (ABP) conservation plan, our project engineer and heritage consultants will be delivering a talk about the proposals and talking through some of the findings.

This year’s theme is celebrating trade routes and connections, and the event will be exploring the major roles the port has played over the years and to the present day with global connections.

Visitors can listen to talks on various aspects of the port’s history, explore some of the recently restored buildings and listen to music in the marquee. Last year 2,000 visitors enjoyed what is known as the film quarter, as ABP pursues the vision around the restoration of the historic buildings for the film and television industry.

‘LIGHTWAVES’

In the marquee you can find Grimsby born seafood chef, Amy Salisbury, representing the Made Great in Grimsby brand who will be cooking up a storm alongside Grimsby’s Master Fishmonger, Ivan Jaines-White.

There’ll be music from Brad Arliss, Rob Bywater and Roger Beard and the Grimsby & Cleethorpes Sea Cadets will be in attendance again this year. Other organisations on site include the Fishermen’s Mission who will have former fishermen showcasing net braiding, the RNLI, Stella Maris and the Sailors’ Children’s Society.

Entry to the open day, which runs from 10am to 4.30pm is free and car parking will be at the Grimsby Fish Market. Tours are fully booked, but

The event will run through the High Street, Meridale Centre and picturesque seafront, with a special four-metre-high hourglass installation providing one of the main attractions, filled with images, animations, and audio recordings from local residents.

To help produce this installation, a drop-in audio workshop will take place at the Meridale Centre on Monday 26 August, from 10am to 1pm or 2pm to 5pm, where people can turn up for free to help create it.

The event production team will also be working with local schools and community groups to

No booking is required for the event, and people are invited to drop-in at any time to enjoy what will be an enchanting and colourful night.

‘LightWaves’ is being organised by the South & East Lincolnshire Councils Partnership in collaboration with The Sessions House and SessionsArts, who have experience in running other light nights including the one in nearby Spilsby.

The Partnership’s NPO funding looks to support arts, culture, heritage and creativity across the whole of South and East Lincolnshire, providing meaningful opportunity and programming for residents, developing the sector and helping to build our arts, culture and heritage offer.

The Sutton-on-Sea Colonnade, which is still under development, was identified through the bid as East Lindsey’s creative hub to deliver creative activity as part of the Arts Council England funding, with the programme being supported by an eight-member culture board drawing experience from a variety of sectors.

CONSULTATION LAUNCHED ON REVIEW OF LOCAL ELECTION BOUNDARIES IN NORTH EAST LINCOLNSHIRE

Press release from the Local Government Boundary Commission for England

A public consultation has been launched to help shape new council wards for North East Lincolnshire. The Local Government Boundary Commission for England wants to hear people’s views on where they live, to help make sure that the new wards reflect the size and shape of local communities.

An electoral review is being carried out to make sure that each local councillor represents about the same number of electors, and that the wards they represent reflect community identities.

Following an earlier consultation with the Council, the Commission concluded that North East Lincolnshire needs 42 councillors to be able to operate effectively. This is the same number as they have now.

Launching the consultation on the electoral review of North East Lincolnshire, Professor Colin Mellors, Chair of the Local Government Boundary Commission for England, said:

“We are looking for your views, as local people, on how you think North East Lincolnshire should be represented in wards that reflect local communities and identities.

“By telling us about where you live and where you access local services, it will help us to create appropriate and meaningful boundaries.

“It might be something as straightforward as where you go for shops, schools or a sporting venue, whether you see a road, park or river as a dividing feature or the heart of a community, or which areas have joint projects.

“Hearing from local residents will give us important evidence to inform our recommendations for a pattern of wards for North East Lincolnshire that ensures each councillor represents about the same number of electors.”

The consultation on this stage of the electoral review of North East Lincolnshire lasts for ten weeks and closes on 11 November. The Commission will use local views to help draw up their proposals for new ward boundaries.

Local people can provide their views via the Commission website at: North East Lincolnshire | LGBCE by emailing reviews@lgbce.org. uk or by post to: Review Officer (North East Lincolnshire), The Local Boundary Commission for England, 7th Floor, 3 Bunhill Row, London, EC1Y 8YZ.

RESIDENTS ASKED FOR THEIR VIEW ON NAME FOR NEW SUTTON - ON - SEA COLONNADE SITE

A survey has been launched to give Sutton-on-Sea residents the opportunity to share their thoughts on a name for the new Colonnade and Pleasure Gardens site that is currently under construction.

Following meetings and suggestions with resident groups, a shortlist of five names was drawn up for East Lindsey District Council to consider, and these options are now being put out for people to vote for their favourite via a short online form.

The shortlist of names to choose from are for ‘The Sutton-on-Sea…:

Colonnade

Seaview Colonnade

Pavilion

Sea Front

Tide’s Edge Terrace.

The survey is open to Sutton-on-Sea residents until Monday 30 September, and can be completed at www.e-lindsey.gov.uk/NameSurvey – with posters with QR codes to the form also being put up around the site over the coming weeks.

The Colonnade development is a £7.5million project forming part of the government supported Mablethorpe Towns Fund, working with the Connected Coast Board to bring new opportunities and transform communities in the area. Initial works started in September 2023, and is expected to be operational before the 2025 summer season.

The first phase of work will provide residents and visitors with a new state-of-the-art pavilion, including a café and restaurant, a Changing Places toilet and exhibition space.

New beach huts will also be included as part of this phase of the works, as well as enhancements to the Pleasure Gardens to create additional seating areas, and space for pop-up events and markets. There will also be planting and community gardens, whilst retaining popular existing features including the paddling pool area.

Councillor Martin Foster, the Council’s champion for the project, said: “It has been fantastic to see such great progress with the Colonnade site in recent months, and hope that having a name for the development that the community have invested

in will help make it feel that bit closer to becoming a reality.

“I know many residents are excited for work to be complete and these new state-of-theart facilities to be open to enjoy, bringing new tourism and income for the town, creating new jobs and opportunities, and providing residents and visitors with a place to view our stunning Eastern coastline from. I hope lots of people will take the chance to have their say on the name of this important new landmark for Sutton-on-Sea and the whole of East Lindsey.”

TRANSFORMING HOMES AND GARDENS FOR AUTUMN

In the garden, September is a busy month. The late bloomers still offer vibrant splashes of colour, but it’s also the time to start preparing for the colder weather. Cutting back trees and shrubs is a key task, ensuring they remain healthy and manageable as growth slows. This pruning not only tidies up the garden but also allows more light to penetrate, nurturing any late-season plants. It’s also an excellent time to plant bulbs for spring, giving your garden a head start when the weather warms up again.

For those looking to enhance their outdoor space, it is an ideal time to consider installing a garden office. With many of us continuing to work from home, a garden office can offer a perfect balance between home and work life. Contacting local suppliers to discuss your options is a great first step, whether you’re looking for a fully insulated building for year-round use or a more modest setup for the milder months. Local companies often offer bespoke designs, allowing you to create a workspace that fits seamlessly into your garden.

Indoors, the shift to autumn is an excellent excuse to refresh your furnishings. Reupholstering furniture is a simple yet impactful way to breathe new life into your home. Consider fabrics in warm, rich tones like deep reds, burnt oranges, and soft browns—these colours not only reflect the season but also add a layer of comfort to your living spaces. Whether it’s a favourite armchair or the dining room chairs, a new fabric can completely change the feel of a room, giving it a fresh, autumnal vibe.

GET YOUR GARDEN WINTER READY WITH ADVICE FROM FULLERS

Gardens play a crucial role in our well-being, offering both mental and physical health benefits. Gardening activities like digging, shoveling, mowing, weeding, and raking not only burn calories but also keep you fit.

Studies have shown that spending time in the garden, soaking in the sunshine and fresh air, and enjoying the colours, smells, and sounds of nature can lower blood pressure and relieve muscle tension. As we approach autumn, you can enjoy these benefits while preparing your garden for the colder months.

MOWING

While the last grass cut marks the beginning of the autumn-winter winddown, remember that grass never stops growing; it only slows down. As we move into the autumn months, the frequency of mowing will reduce. By October, mowing once a fortnight will suffice, and consider one final cut in November. Before winter sets in, apply a fertilizer to strengthen and protect the grass from harsh winter conditions. This will ensure it emerges bigger, brighter, and better in spring.

PONDS AND WATER FEATURES

During winter, when less time is spent in the garden, water features are often neglected, leading to repairs come spring. For solarpowered features, remove all the water when temperatures approach freezing, clean the panel with warm water, and store it in a shed or garage. If the temperature drops below freezing, wrap the feature for extra protection. For mains-powered features, ensure no ice forms on any part of the feature. Empty all the water and cover the feature with a protective cover to shield it from harsh winter weather.

PRUNING

Ensure that the trees and shrubs you prune at this time of year will benefit from it. Use well-maintained equipment, take your time, and periodically step back to assess the shape of the tree or shrub. This careful approach will help you achieve a wellshaped and healthy garden.

PLANNING FOR CHANGES

While working in your garden, you might realise you want to make some changes. Whether it’s a full makeover or minor additions, Fullers Landscaping can help you create your ideal garden.

We collaborate closely with clients to design innovative solutions or make small tweaks that have a big impact, ensuring you use your space wisely.

Autumn and winter are the best times for landscaping work, allowing your garden to be ready for enjoyment in the spring and summer months.

FOOD SHOPPING LEISURE

CAROLINE DEIGHTON

Caroline Deighton is a professional artist based in Eccleshall, Staffordshire. Her paintings are full of colour, contemporary landscapes inspired by the British countryside, and narratives full of humour and affection. Caroline uses a mixture of mediums in order to capture the effect she desires, but primarily she works with oil and acrylic paint on canvas board.

Growing up in rural Cheshire and now living in Eccleshall, Caroline often feels fortunate to have lived in such lovely parts of Britain. She travels from coast to coast, taking long walks and hikes, and often states that she’s rarely happier than when at the top of a mountain! She’s spent a considerable amount of time exploring the Lake District, as well as the lochs of the Scottish Highlands. The influences of all of Caroline’s travels are often found in her paintings, giving a sense of home and wonder no matter where you are from. Caroline strives to capture the beauty she sees and feels while out walking in these stunning locations. With a strong focus on light in her work, it’s no surprise that Caroline toys to recreate the warm, sunset evenings that she experiences on her walks. She also loves to add in the characters that she’s met on her walks into her artwork, as

Care home for adults with learning disabilities is one of the best in UK

A care home in Lincolnshire has been awarded its third Outstanding rating in a row.

The Old Hall in Fiskerton has been praised for its “person centred” care, support and culture by the Care Quality Commission (CQC).

It is one of 11 homes run by Home From Home Care, a family-owned provider in Lincolnshire which specialises in care for adults with learning disabilities and autism. Founded in 2004, the organisation is seen as a pioneer within the care sector thanks to its culture of innovation, dynamism, empowerment and empathy.

CQC inspectors observed that staff deliver high quality care, with good knowledge of each individual’s needs and are well supported by their colleagues, with effective oversight. It was noted that staff worked “in a caring way” and that individuals were “supported to maintain as much independence as possible and live a meaningful life”.

Just 4% of all care homes in the UK have been rated Outstanding by the CQC, meaning that The Old Hall - along with seven other Outstanding Home From Home Care services - rank among the very best in the country.

Managing Director of Home From Home Care, Jo Hurley, said:

“We are delighted that CQC inspectors have recognised that The Old Hall and our exceptional team are truly ‘Outstanding’.

“The report highlighted how our colleagues go ‘above and beyond, bringing out the best for the individual’. We are driven to improve each individual’s life, from their bespoke environment designed around their specific needs to an empathetic support team who want to make every day fulfilling.

“It’s widely known that there is a great deal of pressure on the care sector, from workforce challenges to funding, but we’re breaking the mould and using ingenuity and compassion to deliver exceptional care.”

Co-founder and Executive Chairman of Home From Home Care, Paul de Savary, said:

“My daughter has learning disabilities and my family and I started Home From Home Care because we wanted to transform the way care homes operate. We combine innovation with compassion and dedication to change lives for the better.

“With our unique, high-tech, data-informed model of care that was developed in-house, we’re empowering colleagues to make a far greater impact. We appreciate the time that the CQC inspector took

to understand how this positively impacts the service because we’re so unlike other care providers.

“It’s about a shared ethos and passion that drives continuous improvement, making it an everyday expectation as we must never forget that it is both a privilege and a reward to support society’s most vulnerable individuals.”

The Old Hall is a converted two-storey farmhouse on Chapel Road in Fiskerton near Lincoln. It accommodates adults with a range of learning disabilities, autism, and complex physical and mental health.

In addition to its overall rating, the care home was also rated “Outstanding” in the categories of ‘responsive’ and ‘well-led’, scoring 93 and 96 out of 100 points respectively. It was also graded “Good” in the categories of ‘safe’, ‘effective’ and ‘caring’.

The CQC said that Home From Home Care “had robust processes in place to oversee the quality of the service they provided” and that “staff used these processes effectively to support the day to day care people received”, adding “the ethos of the provider was to support people to achieve a high quality of life.”

The CQC said individuals were “supported by a team who treated them with kindness and involved them in their care.” It said that staff “felt positively about the culture at the service”, “spoke passionately about their jobs” and that they “had confidence in managers at the service to deal with any safeguarding concerns reported to them”.

It also said that throughout its visit it saw that “people were supported appropriately by staff” and that it has a “comprehensive training programme in place”. It said that “staff worked to achieve good outcomes for people” and “this included supporting them with health issues or working with people towards different goals… supporting people to make their own decisions where possible and working in the least restrictive way possible.”

Family members of individuals being supported by Home From Home Care were also “extremely positive about how well they had been kept informed about their family members’ needs.” It also added that “there were many very positive comments from people’s relatives about how their family members were supported by staff”.

URGENT REMINDER: HEIGHTENED RISKS ON RURAL ROADS THIS SUMMER

As the summer season draws more drivers to the scenic routes of Great Britain’s rural roads, TyreSafe is highlighting the pressing need for increased tyre safety awareness. A recent report by the European Transport Safety Council (ETSC), highlights that rural roads remain the most dangerous type of roads in the UK, accounting for a staggering 59% of all road deaths in 2022. This translates to over 10,100 fatalities on rural roads over the past decade.

While there has been a reported 2.5% reduction in road deaths across all road types over the last ten years, the alarming truth is that the number of fatalities on rural roads has shown no significant decrease. In 2022 alone, 1,711 road deaths were recorded in Great Britain, with rural road fatalities comprising a substantial proportion. Car drivers and passengers were involved in 55% of these tragic incidents, while motorcyclists accounted for 24%.

CHALLENGES OF DRIVING ON RURAL ROADS

Driving on rural roads presents unique challenges that demand greater attention and caution from all road users. These roads often feature limited lighting, sharp and blind bends, oncoming traffic on narrow lanes, and large farming vehicles. Additional hazards include potholes, road debris, reduced visibility, and slippery surfaces, particularly in wet conditions. These factors when combined with with national speed limits (60mph) make rural roads particularly hazardous, especially during the busy summer travel and harvest season. The importance of performing basic tyre checks cannot be underestimated. According to TyreSafe’s own tread depth survey, there are an estimated 6 million tyres with illegal tread on the roads in the UK meaning a significant proportion of vehicles may be compromised before they even set off.

TYRESAFE’S RECOMMENDATIONS

TyreSafe urges drivers to prioritise tyre maintenance as a critical component of road safety. Ensuring optimal tyre performance is essential for safe braking and cornering, as tyres are the only contact point between a vehicle and the road surface. TyreSafe has developed its ACT messages to help remind drivers of the simple checks they can perform to help ensure their safety and the safety of other road users.

Air pressure – The air pressure of each tyre should also be checked using an accurate gauge. Typically, car manufacturers recommend two different tyre pressures, one for light loads and another for when the vehicle is fully loaded. It’s essential that drivers adjust the pressures to accommodate the load they are carrying. These settings can be found in the vehicle handbook, on reputable internet tyre pressure charts such as the one at tyresafe.org, and often in the vehicle’s fuel filler cap or door sill.

Condition – with a visual check, looking at the overall condition of each tyre to see if anything might have penetrated the tread, such as nails or other objects. If any of these objects, cracks or bulges are present, the driver should seek professional advice immediately.

Tread – drivers should check the tread of their tyres to ensure they are above the UK legal tread depth minimum of 1.6mm. Ideally an accurate tread depth gauge should be used but if this is not available, a 20p coin can be used as a guide. Insert the 20p into the main sections of the tyre and at various points around the circumference – should you see the outer rim at any point, you need to have the tread depth checked as it may be illegal.

“As more people hit the roads this summer, it’s crucial to remember that tyre safety is key to a safe journey,” said Stuart Lovatt, TyreSafe Chair. “Rural roads are often narrower and can be especially dangerous due to the higher speed limits, historical road alignment and restricted visibility and so we urge all drivers to ensure their tyres are in top condition before setting off.”

As the rural roads experience increased usage from both holiday travellers and the rural farming community during the harvest season, TyreSafe emphasises the importance of proactive tyre checks and maintenance. By taking these simple yet effective precautions, drivers can significantly reduce the risk of incidents and contribute to safer journeys for everyone.
