BOSTON BOROUGH COUNCIL’S CABINET APPROVES PILOT COMMUNITY SKIP SERVICE TO COMBAT FLY

- TIPPING??

On Wednesday 24 July, Boston Borough Council’s Cabinet unanimously supported a proposal to introduce a pilot community skip service which is part of a wider strategy aimed at reducing fly-tipping in the Borough. The trial will provide local residents with a convenient way to dispose of bulky items and unwanted rubbish closer to their homes.

The initiative, proposed to operate initially from St Georges Road Car Park (PE21 8YB), will feature two skips—one for unwanted household items and one for furniture—alongside a separate vehicle for disposing of electrical and electronic equipment, such as fridges, freezers, and washing machines.

Cllr Callum Butler, Portfolio Holder –Environmental at Boston Borough Council, said: “With this pilot scheme we hope to see it have a positive impact in reducing fly-tipping in this area of Boston.

“The town centre location has been chosen because of the cases of fly-tipping in this area so we are taking a proactive approach, trying something different and see if that has a positive impact.

“Following the pilot we will assess its success and there could be a chance this becomes a regular service which could lead to the extension of the scheme as well as in other hotspots of the borough, including village locations.

“Please make the most of the opportunity to use this free service for the trial dates in August/ September and in November.”

The community skip service represents Boston Borough Council’s commitment to maintaining a cleaner environment and supporting residents in managing their waste responsibly. The trial’s outcomes will inform future decisions on the continuation and potential expansion of the service.

Children challenged to explore creativity and storytelling.

This summer, Lincs Inspire Libraries are encouraging children to get creative through the power of reading.

Run in partnership with national charity The Reading Agency, the annual Summer Reading Challenge returns to inspire young imaginations.

Children aged four and upwards can sign up for free, where they will be invited to join the ‘Marvellous Makers’, a team of animated characters, discovering new books and unlocking rewards.

Children can borrow and read books, eBooks, audiobooks, e-audiobooks and e-magazines across any genre, which count towards personal reading goals set by themselves.

Everyone who takes part will receive a free start pack, stickers for encouragement along the way, and a medal and certificate for completing the challenge.

This year’s creative theme spans a range of arts, including music, photography, dance, and story writing. There will also be free junk modelling and treasure trails taking place at all Lincs Inspire Libraries.

Lawrence Dunn, Library Development Officer, said:

“The power of reading should never be underestimated – we look forward to signing lots of children up in our libraries this summer.

“We’re also running an inter-school competition, where we’ll be awarding a prestigious trophy to the school with the most students who complete the challenge!”

Children can sign up in any Lincs Inspire Library – Cleethorpes, Grimsby, Immingham and Waltham. There is a suggested Summer Reading Challenge book list, but any library book counts towards their reading goal.

Children can also participate in the challenge online by visiting summerreadingchallenge.org.uk

All children who complete the challenge will be invited to a celebration event at Grimsby Auditorium on Sunday September 29.

SUMMER EXHIBITION AT GRIMSTHORPE CASTLE: “MILITARY LIVES”

Grimsthorpe Castle, Lincolnshire is thrilled to share that its Summer Exhibition, “Military Lives” is now open to the public. Included with your Castle, Park & Gardens ticket, this exhibition delves into the rich military history associated with Grimsthorpe Castle through three distinct narratives.

The Noble Soldier

The early 17th century saw Grimsthorpe as home to Robert Bertie, 1st Earl of Lindsey and 14th Lord Willoughby de Eresby. Born during the Elizabethan golden age of chivalry, Robert Bertie’s life was marked by his career as an elite military commander amidst intense European warfare and the beginnings of civil strife in England.

Visitors will explore Robert’s life through a collection of objects and images which can be found throughout your tour of the Castle, including a rare silk doublet and trunkhose, Elizabethan armor, early military handbooks, and a personal letter from Charles I to Robert’s son, Montagu.

Arnhem 80: Lest We Forget

To commemorate the 80th anniversary of the Battle of Arnhem, we honor the soldiers of the 1st Battalion Parachute Regiment, whose headquarters were at Grimsthorpe Castle in 1944.

Grimsthorpe and Bourne were central to a major airborne assault on mainland Europe during WWII.

A small memorial exhibition in the Chapel pays respect to these soldiers. Visitors can learn about two of the men based here and see surprising items discovered hidden behind the walls of the Castle itself.

The Household Cavalry Regiment

Grimsthorpe has a long-standing connection with the Household Cavalry Regiment, the monarch’s personal bodyguard. The exhibition features twelve contemporary photographic portraits of members of the Household Cavalry Mounted Regiment by renowned artist Ripley, displayed beautifully in the Vanbrugh Hall. These portraits have been exhibited at Blenheim Palace, Royal Ascot, Floors Castle, and other prestigious locations. A set of these images was presented to King Charles III by the

Regiment in 2023 to mark His Majesty’s coronation.

Emma Miller, Grimsthorpe & Drummond Castle Trust Curator, commented,

“This exhibition offers a unique opportunity to delve into the military history that has shaped Grimsthorpe Castle. From the Elizabethan era to the modernday Household Cavalry, visitors will gain a profound understanding of the heroes who have been part of our heritage.”

The summer exhibition will run until Thursday 29th August. Grimsthorpe Castle is open to visitors Sundays to Thursdays throughout the summer, offering a glimpse into centuries of history and architecture.

NEIL PENGELLY

Northants-based artist Neil Pengelly has been creating art since childhood. While developing his skills with drawing, painting, spray paint, and, more recently, digital art, Neil has not only discovered and expressed certain truths about himself but also of society at large.

Neil’s artwork has evolved from chalk and charcoal figurative pieces to his current blaze of colours and varying subject matters. He discovered the limitless possibilities of digital art but likes to stay authentic to his fine art background and so each print and frame is resplendent with added touches or acrylic and oil paints, bejewelled with diamond dust, and given attitude with spray paint!

One of the most quintessential aspects of Neil’s work is that they are full of symbols and references to culture, entertainment, and politics. His works are a treasure hunt and there’s always something new to discover!

MY GENERATION:

“This vibrant piece of fine art captures the essence of the British Mod movement during the Swinging Sixties and for a time thereafter. I’ve tried to incorporate various elements that pay homage to fashion (Mary Quant, Ben Sherman, Vidal Sassoon, Biba, Fred Perry), the people (Twiggy, Jean Shrimpton, Paul Weller, Cathy McGowan), and music of that era (The Kinks, Jam, Who, Small Faces).”

FIELD OF DREAMS:

“This one was fun! Field of Dreams Captures the essence of a nostalgic playground from the 1970s - 1980s, showcasing an outdoor space filed with classic play equipment, reminiscent of a bygone era. The scene is set around 5pm, as the sun begins to set and children are called in by their parents, just as the streetlamps light up. The play found features . . . swings, a roundabout, and a slide. At the heart of the playground stands a majestic, leafy tree, providing shade and a focal point. Perched within the tree’s branches is a charming treehouse, which acts as a hidden retreat for children seeking a sense of adventure. Adorning the walls of the treehouse are posters that reflect the pop culture of the time. Notably, an Athena poster, known for its iconic image of a female tennis player, shares the wall space alongside posters featuring Sam Fox and Madonna, both popular figures of the era. Wrapped around the branches is a snake eyeing up the ladder!”

DANGERS OF HEATWAVES FOR DOGS

Heatwaves can put dogs at higher risk of heatstroke, as well as other dangers.

While we often enjoy spending time in the sun, a heatwave can be dangerous for dogs. Being aware of the risks and how to help your dog is vital.

HEATSTROKE IN DOGS

Unlike humans, dogs cannot sweat through their skin. They rely on panting and releasing heat through their paw pads and nose to regulate their body temperature. If they cannot cool down, they will quickly develop heatstroke. Signs of heatstroke include:

purple gums or red skin collapse diarrhoea vomiting excessive panting dribbling

If you suspect your dog is suffering from heatstroke, move them to a cool place and keep them still and calm. Wet their coat with tepid water and contact your vet immediately. In severe cases, if heatstroke is left untreated, it can be fatal.

If you suspect your pet is suffering from the condition, move them to a cool place, preferably with a draught, wet their coat with cool - not freezing - water, and contact your vet immediately.

HOW HOT IS TOO HOT FOR DOGS?

Temperatures up to 20 degrees celsius are suitable for most dogs. You can continue to walk and play with your dog in this weather. Temperatures over 20 degrees celsius can put dogs at higher risk of heatstroke, especially during exercise. Dogs with underlying conditions – such as obesity – are at risk even in temperatures cooler than this.

HOW TO KEEP DOGS COOL

Preventing heatstroke is always better than treating it. You can do this by helping your dog to stay cool in hot weather:

• Make sure your dog has access to clean, fresh water at all times, ideally in a large bowl filled to the brim. You can also add ice cubes to keep water cold. Always bring a travel bowl and water with you on walks.

• Limit exercise to early morning when temperatures are lower. During a heatwave, temperatures will often stay high in the evening. On particularly hot days you should avoid exercise altogether.

• Offer cooling treats, such as ice licks, refreshing smoothies and frozen Kong recipes

• Place a fan near your dog’s favourite resting spot – just make sure they can avoid the breeze if they choose

• Stay on top of daily grooming as matted fur can prevent dogs from regulating their own temperature

Find more tips on how to help your dog stay cool in summer.

OTHER RISKS OF HOT WEATHER

Dogs in hot cars

A hot car is very dangerous for dogs. When it’s 22 degrees celsius outside, in minutes the temperature in a car can reach up to 47 degrees celsius. While leaving your dog in the car for only a minute may seem harmless, it can quickly become fatal.

If you see a dog in a hot car showing signs of distress, call 999 immediately. A dog in distress in a hot car is an emergency and the police will advise you what to do based on the situation.

Dogs and sunburn

All dogs are at greater risk of sunburn during the sunny seasons. But breeds with light fur coverage or light skin are particularly susceptible. Areas with little to no fur – such as the bridge of the nose, belly and groin – are the most likely to get burnt. Look out for:

• red or pink skin

• dry or cracked skin

• ears that curl at the edges

Persistent sunburn can develop into skin cancer. To prevent it, use a pet-safe sunblock that is zinc oxide or paraaminobenzoic acid (PABA) free. Make sure to take regular breaks in the shade and, if necessary, use a t-shirt to cover vulnerable skin. If your dog’s skin looks crusty or sore, contact your vet.

Bugs and snakes

Bugs and creatures that bite usually thrive in the summer.

Fleas

Flea bites are annoying and itchy for most dogs. If your dog is allergic to them then they can cause real discomfort. Excessive

scratching can also lead to infections. Regular flea treatment is the only way to prevent these little critters – a one-off application will not be enough.

Ticks

Ticks are spider-like, egg-shaped creepy crawlies that are common in woodland, grassland and heath areas. They carry diseases, so it’s important to safely remove any that attach themselves to your dog as quickly as possible. Find out more about removing ticks.

Bees and wasps

Most insect stings will simply cause your dog pain and irritation, but multiple stings can be fatal. Dogs are also at risk when they snap at bees and wasps because this makes them more likely to be stung in the mouth or throat. Stings in these areas are hazardous because any swelling can block your pet’s airway. If you think your dog has been stung in the mouth or throat, contact your vet for advice.

Adders (snakes)

Adders are the only venomous snake in the UK. While they tend to stay out of the way of humans and dogs, your pet may encounter one while exploring heathland, woodland or sandy areas. Adders can be dangerous to dogs if disturbed because they bite when threatened. If you think an adder has bitten your dog, call your vet straight away.

EXERCISING DOGS IN HOT WEATHER

Walking dogs in hot weather

Depending on your dog’s breed, coat, age and whether they are brachycephalic, they may not tolerate warm weather. Dogs’ paw pads can also burn on hot pavements. As a general rule if it’s too hot for your hand, it’s too hot for their paws. To avoid the peak of the heat, walk them in the early morning, preferably in shady woodland or forest. Make sure to bring fresh water and a bowl, and offer your dog plenty of breaks.

While exercise is important for dogs, it is not necessary in extreme heat. All dogs should be kept indoors during periods of very hot weather. If your dog is prone to getting bored, refresh their basic training or offer them a tasty treat puzzle to keep them stimulated.

Dogs and swimming

Taking your dog swimming to cool off can be tempting during a heatwave. But the motivation to play or chase a ball in the water can mask the signs of heatstroke. Playful dogs are still at risk of overheating, even while in the water.

You should also remember that not all dogs like to swim. Do not force them and never throw a dog into water.

During a heatwave, a shallow paddling pool in the garden is an ideal way to gradually introduce your dog to the water, and is much safer than a day at the beach. It will also prevent your dog from exhausting themselves. You should remove any toys and games that may excite your dog. If necessary, for particularly playful dogs, remove the paddling pool altogether.

If you’re taking your dog to the beach or a river, you should:

• keep an eye out for strong currents make a note of the tide times

• bring fresh water to the beach to discourage your dog from drinking seawater

• check freshwater lakes, rivers, ponds and canals to make sure they are clear of sewage and blue-green algae before letting your dog dive in. If your dog swims in algae-contaminated water, contact your vet immediately.

Water intoxication in dogs

Water intoxication is when dogs swallow too much water in a short space of time. It’s rare, but this condition can lead to brain damage and, in extreme circumstances, can be fatal.

Signs of water intoxication include:

• vomiting

• loss of coordination (this can include

• falling over or swaying)

• bloating

• tiredness

• pale gums

To prevent water intoxication, keep an eye on your dog when they’re in water. If they look like they’re swallowing too much water, call them back and let them relax.

You can also limit their swimming sessions to no more than five minutes at a time, giving them breaks in between.

Let’s talk about mixers and what they are

Let's talk about why August was so important for many pet owners. August or shall we call it RAWgust is a food movement aiming to improve awareness of consuming raw foods, the health benefits, and the positive impact on the environment. Here at Laughing Dog, we want to take this opportunity to highlight raw feeding for your dog and how to get it right.

There are two diverse types of raw feeding: homemade raw diet and commercially prepared raw diets. Raw diets for your pets are made up of raw meat, raw bone and may include some other naturally occurring ingredients, for example, fruit, vegetables, oils, and seeds. Some paw parents opt for a raw diet as they do not like the idea of canned, baked, or tinned foods.

More recently, the condition has become more common in all ages and genders due to environmental factors, use of cosmetics and medications, excessive screen use, and underlying conditions such as blepharitis and Sjögren’s syndrome.

I have been a patient at O’Brien’s over twenty years. I have always been extremely happy with the high standard of care and service provided. ENHANCING LIVES AND DIGNITY

In a society where the elderly population is steadily increasing, the importance of residential care homes is undeniable. These facilities provide a critical service in offering long-term care for senior citizens, ensuring a secure and supportive environment for those who need help with daily activities, specialised care, and emotional support.

This article explores the crucial role of residential care homes, focusing on longterm care for the elderly, respite care, and dementia care. We will discuss the wide range of services provided by dedicated staff members, including assistance with personal care tasks like washing, dressing, helping with toileting, and administering medications.

The Importance of Residential Care Homes

As people age, they often face challenges that can make it difficult to manage daily activities independently. Residential care homes provide a compassionate solution by offering a homely setting where trained professionals meet the needs of older adults. These homes aim to enhance residents’ quality of life, promoting physical and emotional well-being while upholding their dignity.

Long-Term Care for the Elderly

Long-term care is a fundamental aspect of residential care homes, supporting seniors who need assistance with activities of daily living (ADLs). Trained caregivers help with tasks such as washing, dressing, grooming, and mobility, ensuring that residents’ basic needs are met. This support also fosters a sense of companionship and emotional

connection, which is vital for the residents’ overall well-being.

RESPITE CARE:

Providing Essential Breaks

Respite care is another valuable service offered by residential care homes. This temporary care option provides relief to family caregivers, allowing them to take a break while ensuring their loved ones receive professional care and attention. During respite stays, seniors can participate in various activities, join social events, and benefit from personalised care plans that cater to their specific needs.

DEMENTIA CARE:

Supporting Minds and Hearts

Dementia care within residential homes requires a specialised approach. Staff are trained to create a safe and stimulating environment for those living with dementia. Activities and therapies are carefully designed to engage cognitive abilities, promote memory retention, and encourage social interactions, thereby enhancing the overall quality of life for these residents.

Comprehensive Services Provided by Dedicated Staff

The staff members at residential care homes play a crucial role in the lives of

residents, offering a range of services to ensure their well-being:

• Personal Care: Skilled caregivers assist with daily activities, including washing, dressing, and grooming, helping to maintain residents’ dignity and sense of self-worth.

• Toileting Assistance: For residents who need support with toileting and hygiene, staff provide respectful and considerate care.

• Medication Administration: Many residents require regular medications; staff ensure these are administered on time and accurately, upporting the residents’ health and safety.

Residential care homes are vital in the realm of elderly care, providing longterm support, respite care, and specialised dementia care services. The dedicated staff members who assist with personal care, medication administration, and other daily activities make a significant contribution to the well-being and quality of life of the residents. As the elderly population grows, the importance of these facilities in offering a safe, compassionate, and dignified environment for our seniors is increasingly critical.

Garden Design and Construction

CREATING THE PERFECT SUMMER GARDEN

During the Summer months, our gardens become a focal point for relaxation, socialising, and enjoying the warmer weather.

Creating a beautiful and functional garden involves thoughtful design, careful selection of materials, and attention to detail. Whether you’re planning a complete garden overhaul or just a few updates, here are some key considerations to help you create the perfect summer garden.

Planning Your Space

The first step in creating an ideal summer garden is to plan the layout and design of your space. Consider how you want to use the garden. Do you need areas for dining, relaxing, or perhaps a play area for children? By defining zones within your garden, you can create a more organised and enjoyable outdoor space.

Think about incorporating various elements such as seating areas, walkways, and planting beds. A well-designed garden should have a balance of open space and greenery, allowing for both movement and areas to relax and enjoy the surroundings. Consider using different levels and textures to add visual interest. For instance, raised beds can provide height and structure, while a variety of plants can create a lush, layered effect.

Choosing the Right Materials

Paving is a crucial aspect of garden design, as it defines pathways, patios, and other functional areas. When selecting paving materials, consider the style of your home and garden. Natural stone, such as sandstone or limestone, offers a timeless, classic look, while porcelain tiles provide a modern, sleek finish. For a more rustic or traditional feel, you might opt for gravel or brick.

The choice of paving should not only be aesthetic but also practical. Consider the durability and maintenance of the materials. Some stones may require regular sealing or cleaning, while others are low-maintenance. Also, think about the slip resistance of the paving, especially if you have children or plan to entertain frequently. A well-paved garden not only looks great but also enhances the usability of the space.

Defining Boundaries and Enhancing Privacy

Fencing plays a vital role in garden design, offering both privacy and security. It can also be a decorative element that complements the overall style of your garden. There are numerous fencing options available, from traditional wooden panels to modern metal designs.

When choosing a fence, consider the height and style that best suits your needs. For privacy, taller fences are ideal, while lower fences can define boundaries without obstructing views. You can also add a decorative touch with trellises or climbing plants, which soften the look of the fence and add greenery.

Wooden fences can be painted or stained in various colours to match your garden’s aesthetic. Metal fences, such as wrought iron, offer durability
