We live in an interesting area. Its diverse geography has encouraged many different sectors, industries and drivers. Much of our industrial strength lies in our associations with the wider Humber area but if our

economic head and driver is the Humber then our cultural and historic heart remains in a rural and agricultural Lincolnshire. We now embrace both regions to help grow and develop our towns and village.

One constant throughout the centuries has been our magnificent Estuary, the River Humber. From fishing to advanced manufacturing it acts as a key point of economic energy, quite literally now, as here in Grimsby we have become the

operational and maintenance hub of a growing UK renewables and wind farm industry. We are witnessing a green industrial revolution in the UK and North East Lincolnshire is the spearhead. As part of its Cluster Sequencing Process the government has shortlisted 15 projects from across the East Coast Cluster to negotiations. That includes two projects from Zero Carbon Humber companies, both of which could play a key role in making the Humber the world’s first net zero industrial region by 2040.

We are proud of our rich maritime heritage and of course the Port of Grimsby is synonymous with fishing in a history spanning many centuries back to the Middle Ages. That history continues on today with a thriving Fish Market based on Grimsby Docks and we are proud to play our part in contributing to the £784-billion that fishing brings to UK GDP. With the largest private sector seafood employer Young’s based in the area, employing 2,700 local people, our relationship with fish and seafood looks set to continue on unabated.

Of course much of our current Estuary activity centres round the deep sea Port complex of Immingham operated by ABP which has seen huge investment over recent years. Immingham handles 46 million tonnes of cargo every year. Together with Goole, Hull and Grimsby, ABP’s other Humber ports, it provides a gigantic portal connecting the UK with business throughout Europe and beyond. Did you know the Port contributes over £700 million to the economy annually?

Of course North East Lincolnshire is also home to many industries in chemical, pharmaceutical and allied industries. Indeed we are at the centre of a major concentration of process industries which in the wider region employ around 20,000 people in 400 companies.

energy crisis, have led to crises in confidence and nervousness in trading not seen since the 1970’s. The Chamber has been working with local businesses for over a century through thick and thin and we continue to be proud to do the work we do to help keep the cogs of business turning and ensuring our local businesses get the representation and help they deserve. We’re particularly proud of our work in international trade. In North East Lincolnshire we are based in the ABP Port Office on Grimsby Docks. The iconic Dock Tower is our ‘go to’ view out of the window. Just wonderful – even on grey days! Also out of the window we can see that Grimsby Docks is experiencing a huge renaissance with the old ‘Kasbah’ area of the docks being regenerated and attracting many cultural and arts businesses to operate there. This is actually just one small part of our huge Town Centre regeneration which will see a refreshed area emerge.

Cleethorpes is an iconic seaside resort and its beach has been deemed the most ‘instagrammable’ in the whole country. Of course us locals always knew this but so nice to be able to share our beautiful place with the rest of the country. 2022 saw Grimsby launch a Viking Falfest for the town. NORTH EAST LINCOLNSHIRE

We are home to the largest port complex in the UK, and shipping remains incredibly important to North East Lincolnshire. In recent years the emergence of renewable energy has also seen this area pivoted to the heart of this burgeoning green sector.

Complementing the port industry is the hive of food processing industries and cold storage warehousing available within a 10 minute drive of our ports. Did you know, for example, that across Grimsby and the wider Humber region there are 6,000 people directly employed in more than 50 approved seafood processing units. In monetary terms, the sector is worth more than £1.5bn to our region.

With easy access to the southern North Sea, Grimsby is also home to the long-term maintenance and operations for many of the windfarms based there. Some of the most reputable companies in the world, such as Orsted, have brought significant investment into North East Lincolnshire.

Work continues to regenerate the heart of Grimsby with the next works on the ground due to be the creation of a new green space next to the River Freshney, and delivery of the new market, cinema and leisure outlets scheme at the Minster end of Freshney Place.

As of summer 2022, the Council owns Freshney Place shopping centre, saving it for the community as we look to transform its fortunes with a eclectic mix of use. Whilst the day-to-day running of the centre will be

done by an external party, there are many opportunities the acquisition brings, feeding into our current plans.

In Cleethorpes, the tourism staycation market has seen a big upturn this year, and work continues on the heritage programme of works along Alexandra Road, restoring some of the Victorian cast iron balconies and shop fronts to their former glory.

PAST TO PRESENT

Grimsby. A Danish fisherman called Grim made these shores his home in the 9th Century AD, beginning centuries of prosperity and growth.

visitors to the sea bathing and the theoretical health benefits of the medicinal waters, transforming into a key holiday resort when the railway arrived in the area in the 1940s.

The population of Cleethorpes in 1831 was under 500 residents, this figure has risen dramatically and now plays host to more than 30,000 people.

The international significance of Immingham can be traced back more than 400 years. It was the last departure point for the Pilgrim Separatists who fled England for Holland in 1608. These families then sailed on the Mayflower to America in search of a new life.

With thousands of tonnes being imported and exported throughout Immingham each day the town has a special place in the success of global industries ranging from automation through to energy.

The Great Central Railway Company decided to open a neighbouring dock to Grimsby in 1912 as the deep water channel to the river made it accessible for many types of vessels.

Pioneering engineering allowed for the creation of Grimsby’s first dock with the opening of the Haven Dock in 1801. Major developments in marine civil engineering continued to be advanced, culminating in HRH Prince Albert laying the foundation stone of Grimsby’s new dock in 1849. Built for the Royal Navy’s largest ships, the new Royal Dock was officially opened by Queen Victoria in 1854.

Purpose built attractions such as Ross Castle and Cleethorpes Pier were funded by Manchester, Sheffield and Lincolnshire Railway Company as tourist attractions which are still popular today. The promenade and town continues to be an attraction with its vibrant seaside lifestyle.

IMMINGHAM

Immingham is a major business location with the UK’s largest port and a unique history.

Well known for the industrial sites around the port, the town is a busy logistics hub, a centre for the process industries and a growing focal point for renewable energy companies.

The new docks meant that there needed to be an easy link between the towns, therefore the opening of the dock by King George V, known then, as the Kings Dock went alongside the arrival of the electric railway running to Grimsby from Immingham. This train line encouraged workers to move into the area and this led to the further development of the community.

During WW1, the area was used as a submarine base and the war caused Immingham to suffer economically but it began to pick up again when the docks were developed in the 1950s.

The dock is now over 100 years old and the port, owned by ABP, is the largest in the UK in terms of tonnage, handling almost 20 million tonnes of oil and 10 million tonnes of coal.

Discovering the history of North East Lincolnshire helps us to understand how the area has progressed and developed over the years and how it has come to be the way it is today. Its current successes give reassurance for future accomplishments in time to come.

LARGE-SCALE GREEN HYDROGEN FOR THE

UK: AIR PRODUCTS AND ASSOCIATED BRITISH PORTS PARTNER ON RENEWABLE HYDROGEN PRODUCTION

On August 30, 2022 – Air Products (NYSE:APD) and Associated British Ports (ABP) announced their intention to partner in bringing the first large scale, green hydrogen production facility to the UK.

The facility would import green ammonia from production locations operated by Air Products and its partners around the world. This would be used to produce green hydrogen, which would decarbonise hard-toabate sectors such as transport and industry.

SUPPORTING A GREEN HYDROGEN ECONOMY

The UK Government has plans for 10GW of low-carbon hydrogen to be in production or construction by 2030. Currently there is

no significant domestic production of such hydrogen in the UK. Air Products, as a first mover, aims to help drive progress towards the Government’s targets, addressing the urgent task of decarbonising hard-to-abate sectors, and reduce the UK’s dependency on fossil fuels.

Immingham – the UK’s leading port complex decarbonising energy Air Products and ABP are working together to bring the new green hydrogen facility to the Port of Immingham. The location will provide the

required maritime infrastructure and offers good proximity to markets and the required utilities. ABP will invest in new infrastructure with a new jetty to service the import and export handling of liquid bulk products. In addition to handling green ammonia, the jetty is being designed so that it can accommodate other cargoes connected to the energy transition, including the import of liquified CO2 from carbon, capture and storage projects for sequestration in the North Sea – thereby playing a significant role in the UK’s energy transition.

Immingham sits within the UK’s largest industrial cluster and in close proximity to proposed offshore transport and storage networks for CO2. The scheme follows on from an existing Air Products’ plan to develop the UK’s largest blue hydrogen facility in Immingham, making the Humber a major location for low carbon energy production, businesses and jobs.

BENEFITS TO THE UK

The project will bring a wide range of benefits to Immingham and the UK, including eliminating up to 580,000 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions each year, the equivalent of taking 20,000 diesel HGVs off UK roads, as well as reducing nitrous oxide and particulate emissions. In addition, the project will bring up to $4.6 billion in growth and financial benefits to the region and provide 1,400 direct jobs and approximately 1,600 indirect jobs for supply chains and local businesses.

This first-mover project stimulates demand and will support the development of a local and national green hydrogen market. It will be an important contributor to the Government’s plans to make the UK a “global leader in low-carbon hydrogen.”

“Globally Air Products supports the energy transition by developing real, first mover projects. We are forging sustainable hydrogen supply chains with our partners and using our hydrogen knowledge and expertise to accelerate the energy transition,” commented Ivo Bols, Air Products’ President, Europe and Africa. “We are in positive talks with government ministers and officials about our plans to invest in UK green hydrogen. To enable our investment decision, we are seeking some policy assurances that a viable market will exist for our product.”

Henrik L. Pedersen, ABP’s Chief Executive Officer, commented: “ABP and the Humber are at the epicentre of the decarbonisation agenda and we are delighted to work with Air Products on this project, which will help deliver the UK’s legal obligation to be net zero by 2050.

“ABP’s ports are a vital part of the UK’s energy transition, and we are making significant investments to support a range of renewable energy generation projects, including the expansion of Green Port Hull and the transformation of Port Talbot to help deliver the UK’s ambition for floating offshore wind in the Celtic Sea.”

HUMBER MARINE PILOTS TRIAL A FLEET OF ELECTRIC VEHICLES

The five VW ID.3 electric cars with a range of 300 miles have been chosen to ensure the Pilots can travel around the 145 square miles that is covered by them. Stretching from Goole to Grimsby and covering inland ports such as Flixborough, the Pilots cover a million miles a year on the road as they travel from port to port.

Simon Bird, Regional Director of ABP Humber, said: “The Humber Marine Pilots are undertaking a lot of travel around our ports, and they needed a dependable electric vehicle and VW was our first choice. It’s a popular car with a strong performance record and excellent environmental credentials.

“Our ambition long term is to ensure we reduce emissions, and the Humber ports are leading the way in supporting sustainability and investing in green equipment.”

David Rae, Sales Manager at Volkswagen Financial Services Fleet, said: “Supporting organisations through their transition to electric vehicles is extremely important

to us. We’re pleased to have been able to supply ABP with their ID.3 vehicles to help cut down their fleet emissions while enabling them to cover the miles they need to.

“We look forward to continuing to work with ABP as they continue on their journey to an electric fleet.”

The all-electric ID.3 is the first Volkswagen produced and delivered with a carbon neutral balance. It has lightning-fast recharging and can recharge a range of up to approximately 180 miles in 30 minutes.

Multiple electric vehicle (EV) charging points have been installed across the Humber ports as part of a £150,000 investment at Hull Port House, Immingham Dock Office, and the Grimsby Marine Control Centre. Further EV points will be rolled out longer term.

As the trial of using electric vehicles continues, it is hoped another 10 electric cars will join the fleet soon, with a further 10 being added in 2024.

Associated British Ports (ABP) has invested in a fleet of electric cars to transport the Humber Marine Pilots around the region.

ABP SIGNS NEW CONTRACT WITH ADM FERTILISER

Associated British Ports (ABP) welcomes long term customer ADM’s fertiliser division to the Humber in a new contract.

ADM Agriculture, one of the largest fertiliser suppliers in the UK, have signed a three-year extension agreement with ABP for the import, handling, bagging, and processing of fertiliser at ABP’s Bulk Park at the Port of Immingham. It will see extensive fertiliser volumes come through the UK’s largest port by volume of tonnage.

PORT OF IMMINGHAM WELCOMES SHIPMENT OF CONDITIONED PULVERISED FLY ASH

Associated British Ports (ABP), the UK’s leading ports group, welcomed its first shipment of conditioned pulverised fly ash (CPFA) at the Port of Immingham.

The raw material is used in other products to produce components for road or ground bases, in concrete and cement, or tile and brick manufacturing.

The shipment was brought in by Power Minerals Ltd (PML), the UK’s leading supplier of Power Station Ash products. PML supplies millions of tonnes of quality ash each year contributing a major ingredient to the construction industry. This first cargo of around 25,000 tonnes arrived on the MV Loyalty last month.

key role in bringing in components for the construction industry and we’re delighted to welcome this first shipment of conditioned pulverised fly ash. The strength of the Humber Ports is in the diversity of the markets and commercial sectors that we support, so it is great to be adding another new product to that range.”

GRIMSBY RIVER TERMINAL WELCOMES THE FIRST SUSTAINABLE CAR CARRIER

The Grimsby River Terminal (GRT) welcomed the first deep sea car carrier powered by a multi-fuel liquefied natural gas (LNG)/battery hybrid engine carrying a cargo of Kia vehicles.

MV Auto Achieve, owned by United European Car Carriers (UECC), was built this year at the Jiangnan Shipyard, China, and is the second pure car and truck carriers (PCTCs) vessel in its sustainable fleet. It is also the first Eukor vessel to come to the GRT, as these deep sea carriers usually berth at the Port of Immingham’s Humber International Terminal (HIT).

According to UECC, these multi-fuel engine vessels enable a carbon dioxide emissions reduction of around 25%, SOx and particulate matter by 90% and NOx by 85% from the use of LNG and are also adaptable for low-carbon fuels such as bio-LNG and synthetic fuels as these become available.

Spencer Group, which is one of Ron Dearing UTC’s Founding Partners, has employed 42 apprentices from Hull’s employer-led school in just three years.

The relationship between the school and one of Hull’s leading businesses has created a productive pipeline of fresh talent for the engineering industry as well as opening up exciting and rewarding opportunities for dozens of young people.

Former Ron Dearing UTC students now make up a significant proportion of the company’s workforce of more than 300 directly-employed staff.

The latest entry-level roles include nine Engineering Apprentices, one Mechanical Apprentice, one Electrical Apprentice, two Marketing Apprentices and one Scheduling Apprentice.

Charlie Spencer OBE, Executive Chairman and founder of Spencer Group, said: “I’m delighted we’ve been able to take on so many apprentices from Ron Dearing again this year.

“As a growing business, it’s essential we bring

in and develop young talent and that’s exactly what we’re doing with these exceptional young apprentices.

“They’ve had an outstanding experience at Ron Dearing, which has prepared them for the world of work with its employer-led model of education, and now they’ll learn from excellent mentors at Spencer Group during the next stage of their development.

Spencer Group, which has its headquarters at Humber Quays on Hull Marina, is a privately-owned, multi-disciplinary engineering business delivering innovative engineering and construction solutions across the UK in the rail, bridges, transport, infrastructure, materials handling, energy and industrial sectors.

The business employed 14 apprentices from Ron Dearing UTC three years ago, followed by a further five two years ago and nine last year, with many more planned for future intakes.

“Our previous apprentices have proven to be of a really high standard and we have no doubt the latest intake will also become valuable additions to Spencer Group.

“We became involved with the UTC at the beginning because we wanted access to a pipeline of talented young people who would develop their careers with us. Those hopes have come to fruition and our original apprentices are now excelling in permanent roles.

“There’s no doubt that the education and employability skills instilled in students from the moment they join Ron Dearing UTC help them to hit the ground running with us as work-ready employees.”

UTC students who have completed their apprenticeships with Spencer Group help mentor the new intake each year.

This year’s Engineering Apprentices will rotate around various departments before heading out on site to work on projects across the UK, while the Mechanical and Electrical Apprentices have already started work on site.

Every apprentice who secures a permanent position with Spencer Group is offered the chance to further their studies to degree level and possibly complete a master’s degree.

Harrison Ryan is looking forward to developing his skills and knowledge after joining Spencer Group as an Engineering Apprentice.

He said: “It’s amazing to be here. Spencer Group is a brilliant company to work for and I can’t wait to get going.”

Ellen White, who has joined as a Marketing Apprentice, said: “I’m so excited to start. They look after you at Spencer Group and I’m really looking forward to getting stuck in.”

Luke Blackwood has also joined as an Engineering Apprentice.

“I’m absolutely ecstatic,” he said. “Ron Dearing was a brilliant experience. All the teachers push you to be the best you can and they treat you like an adult, which really helps the transition to the world of work.”

Fellow Engineering Apprentice Declan Longley added: “I’m really excited to be starting and to learn more about the business and the industry.”

Ian Pashley comments “Grayton were engaged as the main contractor showing a positive intent from the outset. Challenging conditions were prevalent from the beginning due to pipework being in short supply. Grayton Group, working alongside British Steel assisted in the planning of both off site and onsite work, working as a team to resolve any issues. Resulting in an outage that was completed ahead of schedule. High levels of safety methods and standards were achieved which resulted in a zero-harm project with no accidents or incidents.”

Grayton also worked closely with Singleton Birch on their recent zero carbon project. Providing both design and build services, Grayton fabricated new structures, processing equipment and a new kiln to enable Singleton Birch to burn lime more efficiently. This will ultimately save their business money and allow the client to capture

carbon in the pursuit of zero carbon emissions and a more sustainable future.

To enhance the design department of the business, Grayton recently invested £135,000 in equipment including utilising a £25,000 technology grant from Grants for Growth.

Richard Southee again comments: “Investing in modern technology has allowed us to offer our clients the most sophisticated and advanced engineering solutions. We can assess the state of their current equipment and ultimately plan for future maintenance and repairs. By offering a Design, Build and Installation service, our clients are confident that we can provide them with a complete engineering solution to meet their exacting requirements.”

Carl Meale Engineering Director adds “ The investment into 3D laser scanning technology linked to specialised Tom-Tom Tools software, will enable the group to offer innovative kiln alignment surveys which are not offered currently by any other UK company.”

The cutting-edge technology of the scanner allows measurements to be taken during operation of the kiln rotating, eliminating the need for downtime.

Today, the Group employs ten design engineers and over 120 employees in total, including apprentices.

The Group has taken on eight apprentices this year, including an apprentice designer

who recently joined the business through an engineering apprenticeship with HETA (Humberside Engineering Training Association).

Grayton also works closely with NLC in Scunthorpe, to provide apprenticeships combining practical training in a job alongside study. These apprenticeships align directly with industry requirements and will provide young people with a pathway to fantastic career opportunities in exciting innovative companies.

The Future of Freight plan published by the Department of Transport is the first time that the UK government has developed a long-term cross-modal plan for the freight and logistics sector.

The vision for the plan is for it to be “a starting point for government, industry collaboration going forward” and acknowledges a “joint ambition and commitment to a longterm, cross-government and cross-modal approach to delivering our vision of: A freight and logistics sector that is cost-efficient, reliable resilient, environmentally sustainable and valued by society.” The plan has key focus areas which are set out as “Priorities” and include the development of a National Freight Network, facilitating the transition to net zero, tackling barriers created by the current planning regimes, addressing issues with employee retention in the sector and tackling the gulf between innovators and the

sector to better understand and facilitate the technology and data needs of the industry.

Michelle Gardner, Head of Public Policy at Logistics UK commented: “The publication of the Future of Freight plan is a positive step forward for industry; it reaffirms government’s vital support of one of the largest sectors of the UK economy and helps to provide clarity for logistics businesses moving forward.”

“The inclusion of £7 million investment to boost the uptake of innovative new technologies and the development of a National Freight Network is particularly welcome. The government is also right to focus on planning rules to reduce barriers to building new logistics developments and driver parking and facilities”.

In line with the decarbonisation of road transport, a Freight Energy Forum led by

both government and industry will be set up. The Forum will create a “clear path” to net zero and assess future energy needs of the logistics sector.

The Department of Transport together with Logistics UK and the Chartered Institute of Logistics are to deliver the “Generation Logistics” campaign aimed at addressing recruitment gaps in the industry and improve diversity in the sector.

The plan has been well received by the sector and it is hoped the plan will deliver on many of the challenges faced by the sector post pandemic.

busiest channels for shipping in the UK. The Port of Immingham alone is the UK’s largest port by tonnage, handling around 46 million tonnes of cargo every year.

Transport links are a huge selling point for the area with strong connections via road, sea, rail and air. A central UK location, NEL has fast motorway access to the M180, M18, M62 and M1/A1. All of England’s major conurbations are accessible in less than 4.5 hours by HGV. By sea the Port of Immingham provides direct sea freight connections to European and international destinations. Humberside Airport is located 7 miles from Immingham, providing a daily, 7 days-per-week ‘hub-feeder’ service to Amsterdam Schiphol. Via rail both Grimsby and Immingham ports are connected to the UK rail network, with more than 240 rail freight movements per week handled at Immingham terminal.

Great progress continues on the £42-million South Humber Industrial Investment Programme (SHIIP), the largest investment of

its kind in the areas history, paving the way for industry and the local economy to flourish. What makes SHIIP so special are its three main elements:

• A new £8m link road joining the key ports of Grimsby and Immingham opened in 2021, releasing access to undeveloped land on the South Bank of the Humber

• A 64ha business park, Pioneer Business Park, has now opened, with green energy company, myenergi, as the flagship tenants

• Cress Marsh and Novartis Ings Mitigation Sites – these are the only projects of their kind in Europe and offer significant advantages in time and costs for businesses wanting to develop within the SHIIP area.

A YEAR OF PROGRESS FOR THE GREATER LINCOLNSHIRE LEP

2022 has been another busy year for the Greater Lincolnshire Local Enterprise Partnership and local businesses, writes Chief Executive Ruth Carver. From labour shortages, cost of living and energy prices to the continuing pandemic, there have been many challenges to overcome, but we are particularly proud of the fantastic progress we have made in a number of key areas. We have four game-changing and international sectors in Greater Lincolnshire: food, energy, ports and logistics and defence.

UK FOOD VALLEY

The game-changing UK Food Valley was launched at our annual conference at the end of 2021. It is an ambitious project to create a top 10 global food cluster in Greater Lincolnshire, and its priorities are to accelerate food chain automation and digital technology adoption, deliver low-carbon food chains from farm to fork, and develop the market potential of naturally good-for-you foods and new sources of protein such as fish, vegetables, salads, fruit, pulses and lean meat.

The UK Food Valley in Lincolnshire currently supports around 75,000 food sector jobs,

18% of jobs in the area compared to 4% of the UK workforce.

The launch event was an excellent opportunity to hear an impressive range of expert speakers from the food industry and to bring people together at long last for an in-person networking event.

SEAFOOD

PILOT

In January the Grimsby seafood cluster launched a £430,000 six-month UK Food Valley pilot programme to help upskill the fish processing workforce in Europe’s largest seafood cluster.

The pilot was supported by the National Centre of Food Manufacturing (NCFM) in Holbeach, part of the University of Lincoln, as well as by North East Lincolnshire Council and the Greater Lincolnshire LEP.

The seafood sector and the NCFM used the pilot to shape a new centre for food processing education, research and innovation in Grimsby. The aim was to ensure that the food processing cluster, centred on the seafood industry but also including expertise in other foods and food logistics and cold storage, has the expertise needed to drive forward growth.

Speaking at the launch at Grimsby Town’s Blundell Park stadium, Val Braybrooks, Dean of the National Centre for Food Manufacturing, said: “This fund is so exciting; it really opens up the opportunity to put some resources into Grimsby to help our businesses. We have a great team of people to work with and organisations such as Grimsby Institute, Seafish, North East Lincolnshire Council and the Grimsby and Humber Seafood Alliance.”

OFFSHORE WIND HPO

Alongside seafood, another major and growing sector for North East Lincolnshire and the Humber is offshore wind energy – and this year opportunities to invest in the sector have been promoted by the Department for International Trade and the LEP.

The DIT launched its High Potential Opportunity (HPO) for the Offshore Wind Deepwater Ports Hub (Teesside and Humber) at Offshore Wind Connections 2022, a major conference in Bridlington. The HPO showcased the investment opportunities presented by the offshore wind energy sector on Teesside and the Humber, particularly for companies looking to manufacture wind turbines, towers, blades, cables and other energy infrastructure.

“As the world moves towards net zero, wind energy will play a crucial role in reducing our reliance on fossil fuels,” said Pat Doody, Chair of the Greater Lincolnshire LEP.

“We’re fortunate to have a well established offshore wind energy sector on our North sea coast, and this HPO will help to cement our position as a world-leading cluster in this area, as the recent opening of the Hornsea 2 development demonstrates.”

HUMBER FREEPORT

Last year the then Chancellor of the Exchequer Rishi Sunak confirmed that the Humber is among eight areas of England that will have a new freeport.

The Greater Lincolnshire Local Enterprise Partnership supported the bid for a freeport on the Humber which was led by Associated British Ports, and Pat Doody welcomed the Chancellor’s announcement.

“We have worked in partnership with the private and public sector to develop a compelling bid for freeports on both sides of the Humber, and it is one that we know exporters and importers will welcome.

“The Chancellor’s announcement of the Humber Freeport will turbocharge our economy and support levelling up in our area. We estimate that this will mean an increase of investment of £3.5bn and 7,000 high quality new jobs.”

The successful Humber Freeport bid was submitted by a formal coalition led by ABP with support from the four Humber local authorities of East Riding of Yorkshire, Hull, North and North East Lincolnshire, alongside both LEPs and partnering businesses across both banks of the estuary. We are hopeful that subject to Government approval the freeport will become one of the first in the country to be operational.

CAREERS HUB

We lead careers activity with schools and businesses across Greater Lincolnshire. In August we held a celebration event in Boston to honour the impact careers education is having on schools across Greater Lincolnshire and to showcase the

work of our Careers Hub, the flagship careers support programme which runs in 122 local schools and colleges.

As part of the Careers Hub more than 200 employers regularly go into the schools to work with students and help teach them about jobs, vocations, and upcoming careers opportunities.

A variety of representatives from different sectors attended the celebration, including from the Lincolnshire CoOp, Worldwide Fruit and Micronclean. Those attending heard from local schoolteachers who explained the importance of employer-led initiatives for students. Employers also benefitted from workshops to support their engagement with schools and colleges, and work experience charity Speakers for Schools delivered a seminar on how employers can introduce work placements for young people post-pandemic.

The Careers and Enterprise Company, which part-funds the national Careers Hubs initiative, recently published national data that suggests if a school meets all eight Gatsby Benchmarks, a student in that school is nearly 10% less likely to be NEET (not in employment education or training) upon leaving formal education.

Evidence also shows that young people who have four or more encounters with employers are less likely to be NEET when they leave school.

The Careers Hub is made possible with funding and partnership from Lincolnshire County Council, North Lincolnshire Council, North East Lincolnshire Council and the Greater Lincolnshire LEP.

How does client care fit with insurance broking?

Do you have a pre-conceived idea about your eligibility for R&D Tax Credits

Are you sitting comfortably? Then I’ll begin! I almost lost what turned out to be a really large claim for a Debt Collection business. I met Tony and Richard (not their real names) at the Really Simple Systems, first User Conference which was being held at Mercedes Benz World at Brooklands in Surrey.

I was a bit late and just about made it into the introductory session. We had another session and then broke for coffee at around 10.30. I got my cup of coffee and then went over to a table that Tony and Richard were sitting at, we exchanged a few pleasantries and the conversation turned to your typical “what do you do?” networking conversation.

Tony: We run a debt collection business! What do you do?

Me: I run a small tax consultancy. We help companies identify whether they have any projects eligible for the best tax relief available to a limited company, Research and Development Tax Relief. If they do have projects, we help them write a technical report and calculate the costs that they have incurred and liaise with their accountants to make the claim. But I don’t think I’ll be able to help you!

There it was, the near fatal mistake, assumption, the mother of all……

Tony: Why’s that then?

Me: Well, the companies we work with are involved in interesting projects, I don’t say innovative because that might put them off, with a scientific or technological challenge that they need to try and overcome. The best thing to look out for, that gives us something to work with are projects that have failed.

Richard; Projects that have failed? We’ve just spent around £400k on a telephone dialling system that doesn’t work, we scrapped the project and have spent another £300k on a replacement system that we have just about got working.

Me: (Slowly picking my jaw up from the floor) Really, that sounds very interesting! May be we should talk some more.

And the rest, as they say, is history

We spoke some more, said goodbye at the end of the day, I got in my car to drive home, they got a lift to Biggin Hill and then flew back to Yorkshire. I drove up a few weeks later, got a lot more information on their projects, prepared a claim for them, got them back around £200k and they were my second biggest client of that financial year. We’ve done a bit more work for them since.

On a slightly different note, the picture that accompanies this article is the old Mine Manager’s house at the Gypsum mines outside Battle in East Sussex. The house was for many years home to an extremely innovative business that was spending upwards of £500k on R&D and was a leader in an EU Funded Horizon 2020 project developing a system to identify minor damages to bottles in a production line. The company operated in the Photonics industry, which together with business in the High and Ultra-High Vacuum industry has a cluster around the Hastings & Rother area. Sadly, the business is no more, but it claimed over £400k in R&D Tax Relief for its projects, in the 4 years that we were working with them.
