BUY FRESH. BUY LOCAL. About us Pure Catskills is a buy local campaign that promotes farm and food businesses in the Catskill Region. Our goal is to increase support of the local food system. This guide is created in collaboration with farmers and purveyors of fresh food across Delaware, Greene, Otsego, Schoharie, Sullivan and Ulster Counties. When farms thrive, our communities benefit in many ways. Why buy local food? IT TASTES BETTER. Food that is grown closer to home is fresher and tastes better. It is better for you. Fresher food has more nutritional value. It creates accountability. Farmers take responsibility for food that they sell directly to consumers who in turn know and trust the source of their food. It supports the local economy. Buying from local farmers ensures that rural farming communities survive.
About our logo Developed from the 1940s era label of the Walton-Hamden Cauliflower Grower’s Cooperative, the Pure Catskills logo is a celebration of our regional heritage. From the 1920s to the 1940s, local cauliflower was shipped in huge quantities via rail and highway to ready metropolitan markets, making the Catskills synonymous with fine quality produce. T
he Pure Catskills buy local guide was created in response to a burgeoning interest among our neighbors to purchase food directly from farmers. As the program enters its tenth year, it is incredible to see how far the local food movement has come. The images in this year's guide are a testament to that growth. Dairy farms have been the backbone of the regional and state agricultural industry for centuries. This year's guide features value-added dairy producers. These farms offer just about any dairy product you could think of: from everyday staples like milk, butter and cheese to ethnic specialties like kefir, gelato and cajeta. Most farmers featured here head multi-generational operations; but the value-added aspects of their businesses are relatively new. Adding processing infrastructure to a farm amounts to taking on an entire additional business. We salute their efforts by featuring their farms, families and products here. Sullivan County based photographer Andy Ryan visited eight Pure Catskills members to capture these images. This was his first project with Pure Catskills, and he greatly enjoyed the chance to explore the region and meet this diverse group of farmers. His wife, Ky, accompanied him on the trip, helping out as an assistant and cow wrangler when necessary. View more of Andy's work at www.andyryanphotography.com. New ventures by many other types of businesses and organizations have also launched since the Pure Catskills campaign started. During the growing season, farmers' markets occur nearly every day of the week, with an increasing number remaining open through the winter season. Community gardens and farm-to-school programs are popping up in hamlets and small cities. Distributors and processing facilities are helping farmers get their products to market. These advances are all a direct result of the support of customers. Change of this kind and magnitude seldom comes to an industry in such short order. Continue to vote with your fork to maintain this positive trend. In this year’s Guide, we’ve added reference icons within each listing to make product identification easier. Beyond the guide listings, you’ll find convenient ways to find the local food you're seeking. We added a series of panels highlighting food trends and groups of producers including community support agriculture, pastured livestock and pick-your-own operations. Lazy Crazy Acres
My family, both maternal and paternal sides, have been farming these mountains for over 150 years. It’s absolutely in my blood. We set out to make a great ice cream that reflects our grazing, all natural farming practices and found out that “crazy” is an apt middle name for our farm. We found that gelato is a better holistic use of our whole milk and now we are New York’s only micro-creamery “cow to cone gelato.” We are just crazy enough to source all our fruits from other small New York farms, scrape every vanilla bean, hand crack every egg and milk the cows! Painted Goat Farm In fall 2006, we began with a tent and a chainsaw on a hundred acres just north of the Catskills. Twenty pregnant goats soon followed.
