From the 1920s to the 1940s, local cauliflower was shipped in huge quantities via rail and highway to ready metropolitan markets, making the Catskills synonymous with fine quality produce. Celebrating its tenth publication, the Guide continues to serve as a reliable source for connecting with the region’s local farm and food producers. Pure Catskills has grown significantly as the interest among our neighbors to buy local foods has continued to rise. Our community is at the heart of a shift to maintain the working landscape that creates better tasting and healthier foods, supports the local economy, retains an essential aspect of the local culture, and protects the environment. When farms thrive, our communities benefit in many ways. Throughout the Guide, you will find reference icons for the member products you are seeking. Sidebars highlight food trends and groups of producers including community supported agriculture, pastured livestock and pick-your own operations. If you’re a visitor to the area, flip to the back of the Guide for a calendar for events and a list of tourism activities. This year, the Guide features eight small farm and food businesses. Each is a vendor in a new pilot project, the Pure Catskills Marketplace, set to launch this summer. Pure Catskills members can use this new tool, an online portal for the sale of products, to connect to consumers beyond the farmstand, retail store and the region’s borders. From beef and pork to fiber, fudge and gelato, The Marketplace allows Pure Catskills fans to indulge in Catskills products, even from afar.
