With its four very distinct seasons, Japan is home to various types of flowers, but the people’s favorite is by far the blooming cherry blossoms.

The season for the Japanese custom of cherry blossom viewing comes at the same time as Girls’ Day in the old lunar calendar. While the weather usually starts to pick up around this period, the chilly spring weather often tends to bring down body temperatures, but regardless, people’s spirits are lifted by the blooming flowers as they set out to enjoy the symbolic arrival of spring. The nighttime viewing of cherry blossoms is also a favorite pastime of the Japanese people. However, between
people of the modern era and those of days past, there are subtle differences of sentiment when admiring the flowers. During ancient times, the cherry blossom had been a flower for mourning the deceased. The way of the cherry blossom, traditionally considered to be at the zenith of its beauty when the petals fell to the ground, suggested the end of a person’s life. In a way that may be viewed as solemnly inviting those who have passed away to return, the act of admiring the blooming cherry blossoms with a feeling of remembrance, while
experiencing a longing for the beautiful flowers and drinking sake actually has a deep underlying sentiment for those who have moved on before us.

AKIHAB
AN EYE-OPENING C ITY Intimately nicknamed Akiba, the town that is now known as Akihabara originated in 1870, when a Shinto shrine honoring the fi re-quelling deity Akiba was built to ward off the repeated fi re disasters that had caused a massive amount of damage to the area. Back in the early 20th century, the modernization of Japan was proceeding smoothly; the number of radio users grew from 600,000 in 1925 to 1,600,000 in 1932. But the process was halted by WWII: like many cities and areas in Japan, Akihabara was leveled to the ground by allied bombers. Nevertheless, the fortunes of Akihabara would soon reverse. The area’s conveniently accessible location made it a trading center full of vendors of radio parts and electronic products. Capitalizing on the post-war economic boom, these electronics retailers in Akihabara flourished and earned the area its nickname - the electric town. In the ’50s, the best sellers were the monotone TV, the washing machine, and the refrigerator, collectively known as the holy trinity of home appliances. As technology evolved, more and more convenient products hit the market, such as

color TVs, Walkman, stereo sets, video game consoles, and personal computers. Big electronics chains and tax-free shops boasting an extensive lineup of products mushroomed in Akihabara. The electric town certainly lived up to its name. Since the ’90s, a variety of subcultures have emerged as the 5 new fad in Akihabara. Of course Japan is famous for the animated fi lms of Studio Ghibli, such as Spirited Away and My Neighbor Totoro. In Akihabara, however, the animation boom had more to do with cosplay. The fi rst cosplay cafe in Japan is said to have opened in Akihabara in 1999. A variation called maid cafe appeared in 2001, and has since become one the symbols of Akihabara. Nowadays Akihabara is a unique town where Gundam, AKB 48, anime, video games, and computer electronics stores coexist in a somewhat chaotic but exciting fashion. Now, bring along a copy of WAttention and hit the road to discover the unique charm of Akihabara.

GUNDAM CAFE
AKB 48 CAFE
A mecca for anime fans Gundam is probably the most internationally well-known series of Japan’s robot anime. Unlike other super robots who invariably beat their rivals in a good vs evil setting, the robots (called Mobile Suits) in the Gundam series are not invincible, and each faction in the anime fights for its beliefs and motives; therefore, there’s no clear line separating heroes and villains, just like in the real world. For beginners, the Gundam Cafe in Akihabara is a nice first step into the Gundam world. For hardcore fans, it’s a wonderland!
Experience Japan’s unique idol culture Arguably the most popular Japanese idol girl group now, AKB 48 (AKB means Akihabara) was created with the concept “Idols you can meet everyday.” The group performs at their dedicated theater in Akihabara almost every day, and regularly holds “handshake events,” where fans get a chance to interact briefly with the members. For a quick glimpse of the AKB 48 world, drop by at the official cafe & shop, where you can enjoy delicious meals alongside AKB videos, and check out a whole range of AKB items.

Maid Cafe Experience Diary We felt a bit shy and nervous when we fi rst visited maid cafe, but our hearts were melted by the maids’ caring smiles as soon as we entered the dream-like space.
Welcome home, my master!
A New Way to Experience Japanese Hospitality When it comes to discussing omotenashi, the heart of Japanese hospitality, people tend to associate it with services provided in traditional Japanese hotels and restaurants. However, there is somewhere you can experience the very essence of, omotenashi, which is the Maid Cafe.
Here is what happened:
Three adorable maids greeted us with stunning smiles at the entrance. Thanks to the smiles and heart-warming service, we felt like we had come home.
I am good at decorative drawing.
Watch your step, my lord and lady.
A Dollhouse-like Space
One of the maids named Hitomi led us to our seats and kindly reminded us about the stairs. She always kept herself at a lower position when serving us.
We ordered the most popular menu based on Hitomi’s recommendations. It was enjoyable to watch her make a special drink and hand-drawing latte art.
The lunch plate was written with the message and special drawing we requested. We enjoyed joining the chanting spells with the maids as they infused our food with affection before we ate it.
English Menu is Available
After we were seated, Hitomi started to explain the menu to us. It is easy to understand because every item comes with a picture. An Englishspeaking maid is available upon request.
The interior design looked just like a dollhouse, an adorable and cheerful space for people to relax from the tensions of daily life.
Live dancing and singing were extremely cute and healing even you cannot understand Japanese lyrics. The live concert drove the atmosphere to a very high point of amusement.
Let’s play games!
Live Concert
You can play cards and finger-guessing games with the maids, and the winner will be awarded with a photo shoot with the maids or free points, as it is normally not allowed to take any photo of the interior and or the maids in the cafe.
Hope to see you soon again.
The Maid Cafe is no longer exclusive to Otaku. We met many couples, girls, families, and visitors from overseas gathering in this cheerful place.
Guests can only stay at the cafe for one hour, but we were satisfied with the lunch, drink, games, and live concert within that time. The cheerful farewell made a perfect ending to our stay in the dreamland.

When considering Japanese culture, Mount Fuji and the cherry blossoms cannot be forgotten. The sacred mountain, recently designated a world heritage, has been revered since ancient times, and has been represented through art and literature. The cherry blossoms have always been loved by the Japanese, and the way the petals fall nobly to the ground has been described as the proper way for a samurai to die. Many readers have probably experienced this quintessential culture in the film “The Last Samurai”, and it has had a deep impact on Japanese culture. A part of that culture is the sword, which was a necessity for warriors during ancient times. Today, these beautiful pieces of art continue to appeal to people throughout the world. The philosophy surrounding the sword has been passed down through the martial arts. For example, iaido, a martial art of swords, is not only considered physical combat but also a psychological battle, and the intervals before the sword is actually drawn is what should be highlighted and where the samurai spirit continues to thrive. Established in 1880, IidaKoendo has been specializing in swords, sword fittings, and armor over time. Its expertise has been proven in its transactions with museums, and it is also highly regarded overseas, serving renowned VIPs of the world. IidaKoendo’s motto is “trust comes before anything else”. It offers detailed explanations on everything from methods for viewing the pieces to caring for products after purchase, and has won the deep trust of its clientele. It is said that one look at the world of swords will enthrall a viewer to its mysterious beauty. Experience an encounter with the mystique of Japanese culture nurtured by the samurai at an establishment of genuine origin.

Wonderful Stay at Sakura Hotel Ikebukuro Ikebukuro is definitely a fantastic location to shop, eat and explore Tokyo because it is surrounded by lots of gourmet restaurants and department stores. As a traffic hub, it is easy to reach downtown areas in Tokyo such as Shinjuku, Harajuku, and Shibuya, as well as attractions in suburbs such as Nikko and Kamakura. For these reasons, I chose to stay at the Sakura Hotel Ikebukuro during my short trip to Tokyo. If you are looking for a convenient and clean hotel in Tokyo downtown with a reasonable price, I would say the Sakura Hotel Ikebukuro is a great choice.
Sakura Cafe After checking in at lunchtime, the friendly staff told me something interesting. Mount Fuji A sacred mountain that has been worshipped for ages Designated as World Cultural Heritage by UNESCO, Mt. Fuji has inspired artists as well poets and has been the object of pilgrimage for centuries. As a symbol of Japan, the mountain carries special meaning to Japanese people of all walks of life.
Just one example of how Mt. Fuji is featured in artwork.
Mt. Fuji and Religious Beliefs Since ancient times, Japanese people have regarded Mt. Fuji as a symbol of national spirit and a source for inspiration. The breathtakingly beautiful mountain was featured prominently in literature and artwork such as wood blocks painting that has influenced many European artists. Mt. Fuji has also been an object of religious worship as Japanese people traditionally regarded that divinity resides in all aspects of nature. In particular, the majestic form of Mt. Fuji sits in the minds of Japanese people, believing that gods reside within the sacred mountain. Japanese people have long been in awe of the repeatedly erupting Mt. Fuji. Many Sengen shrines honoring the guardian deity of Mt. Fuji were built across the nation to quell eruptions. Among the many Sengen shrines throughout the nation, Fujisan Hongu Sengentaisha shrine in Shizuoka is the headquarters. Since ancient times, the shrine has been highly esteemed by the Imperial court, and was ranked as one of the most eminent shrines in Japan. Around the 12th century, Mt. Fuji’s volcanic activity subsided and it became a center for Shugen-do (修験道), a highly ascetic Buddhist sect focuses on austere mountain-dwelling practices. In the 15th or 16th century, accompanied by 28 WAttention Tokyo
Fujisan Hongu Sengentaisha shrine, headquarter of the many Sengen shrines honoring the guardian deity of Mt. Fuji.
Shugen-do practitioners, ordinary people began to make worship-ascents of Mt. Fuji. The practice had since evolved to became Fuji-ko (富士講) sect of worship that was extremely popular in the Kanto region in the 18th century. Fuji-ko is a group of pilgrims climbing Mt. Fuji for religious beliefs. The popularity of the pilgrimage reached its peak in the latter half of Edo period. Pilgrims would stay in a house of “Oshi” (御師), who takes care of pilgrims by offering them food and lodging. For a peek at the pilgrimage history, you may visit Togawa Oshi house, now serves as a pilgrim museum. Mt. Fuji, a symbol of Japan, a source of artistic inspiration, and an object of worship, resides deep within every Japanese people. Internet Access in Tokyo 東京のネット接続事情
Although Japan is known for its technology, internet connectivity for tourists is still rather limited. These days even most of the budget hotels provide internet connection in each room (please note, LAN cable is still in common use, rather than WIFI). There is a free public WIFI network called FREESPOT (www. freespot.com/users/map_e. html) made up of a network of independent providers like cafes and shops, but it seems many of its spots require registration via 3G email. so this could be offputting for tourists who don't want to use expensive 3G roaming. Wi2 300 (www.wi2.co.jp/ en) offers several services, including 6 hours connection for 350 yen. They have extensive instructions in English so check it out before you go out. Wireless Gate (www.wirelessgate.co.jp) offers even wider services, including one month connection for a fixed 480 yen that includes connecting spots on the Bullet train (only N700 model) and in Underground stations. Unfortunately Wireless Gate doesn't have an English instructions page. FON network (http://maps. fon.com/?lang=en) is quite extensive throughout Tokyo and is recommended. 東京のホテルは多くが客室でのネ ット接続を提供している。街中での 無料WIFIネットワークで有名なのは FREESPOT(www.freespot.com/ users/map_e.html)だがあまり多く ない。
